The lads return after a hectic month for both. Tyrone has been on a speaking tour, whilst Tommy has been doing comedy gigs. In that time, Tommy convinced Tyrone to do another live show. Tyrone enjoyed it that much that he wants to do another! Tyrone tells us about all the activism he’s been getting up to over the last month. He’s met so many new people, and it’s been a struggle to make so much small talk. The lads argue over the editing process for the whiskey n white TikTok account. Tyrone says he doesn’t trust Tommy to do it. The lads take us on a trip down memory lane as they reminisce about the first time they were allowed to go downtown without an adult. This week Team McKenna talks about how the training camp went for Tyrone’s big fight. Tommy and Gin talk about how grumpy Tyrone is when he’s in fight mode. Tyrone apologises to Tommy for the way he treated him during the fight. Despite his temper tantrums, Tyrone says he felt great during the fight week and was very happy with how his camp went. He commends Tommy and Gin for the job they did, although he said he will never respect Tommy's advice when it comes to weight cuts. Tommy and Gin said they felt pressure going into this fight because it would have been a bad reflection on them if Tyrone didn’t win. Tyrone announced before the fight that this would be his last, but has made a U-turn on that decision and vows to fight on! He gives a detailed recap of the fight and gives his opponent, Dylan Moran, credit for boxing a smarter fight than they had in their first encounter. The lads then all pay respect to the great boxing champion, Ricky Hatton, who sadly passed away the day after Tyrone’s fight. PALESTINIAN REFUGEE CAMP; Tyrone talks about staying in the Aida camp, & heated exchange with Tommy
Tyrone is back from his trip to Palestine and tells us about his experience. He went there to work in the young people living in the refugee camp who attend the boxing gym. He says the training sessions was a way they could escape the pressure of daily pressure life in Palestine. He talks about the division between Israelis and Palestinians and how hard it is for Palestinians living there. Since returning home he talks about the hate he’s received online from pro Israel supporters. Tyrone also is preparing for a big fight against Dylan Moran in Windsor Park. Tyrone beat him last year but this time Tommy is training him alone with Mark Ginley. Tyrone reflects on the previous fight and he plans to knock him out again. Tommy says since retiring he’s been trying to stay away from boxing but he keeps getting dragged back. He talks about how his 6 year old daughter has started boxing also and how he feels about it. He was so drunk that he forgot he had made the booking until the tattoo artist texted him to confirm the appointment. Tyrone says he feels like Tommy has stopped inviting him to hang out and believes Tommy wants to keep him separate from his black friends. Tommy says Tyrone used to go out every week without him, so it’s a case of what goes around comes around. FROM PRIEST TO PROFESSOR; Dr Michael Bingham studied to be a priest but made U-turn and became a scientist instead!
Michael talks about his unlikely journey to becoming a scientist. He talks about going to St Mary’s Grammar School but failing chemistry. He repeats his A levels and goes on to university, but in a random twist of events, he decides to become a priest. After the first two years of his priesthood study, his superiors questioned whether he was certain about being a priest and advised him to take a year to think it through. The priests said they sensed that he wanted to get married, so they advised him to go on dates. During this year, he met the woman he would eventually marry. After deciding that he wasn’t going to be a priest, he began to apply for jobs but had no luck. Then one day out of the blue he got an offer to do a PHD in science. He accepted and is now a top scientist working at Queens University. On top of being a scientist, he is also a purple belt in BBJ. He talks about how he got into the sport and getting battered on the first day. After years of going consistently, he is now operating at a high level and competing regularly. Currently, John is taking a break from coaching fighters and is thinking of opening his own gym to train professional boxers. He has became somewhat of a Whiskey N White super fan and has taken the title as “The Drunkest Man at the Show” at all the live podcasts. He went toe to toe with Jimmy Nesbitt during the drinking contest at one of the live shows but then joined forces with Nesbitt at the next show where the pair won the challenge. Tommy announces his retirement from boxing after 23 years in the sport. Having lost at the weekend, he’s decided to call it a day. In this episode, Tommy reflects on his career from amateur to professional. He talks about joining the Oliver Plunkett ABC, where he first met Tyrone. They talk about their memories of heading to dunking at the national championships as kids. He tells us about his first trip on the national team and his proudest moment in the ring. Tommy and Tyrone share some memories of boxing going away to represent Ireland together and the messing around that went on during those trips. During Tommy's career, he picked up 8 national titles from school boy to elite level, numerous nations medals, and a Commonwealth Games gold medal. As a professional, he picked up the WBC International title and became Ireland’s first black European Champion. He ends his professional career after having 28 fights. Rich Peppiatt has recently picked up a number of awards for directing the smash hit movie Kneecap. He tells about how after recently moving to Belfast from London, he went to watch a Kneecap concert. After seeing that show he knew he wanted to make a film about them. So, he spent the next number of weeks trying to track them down. When he eventually made contact he talks about they werent sure about the film idea and they didnt him. Rich ended up having to prove he was trustworthy by drinking all night with the boys in a west Belfast pub. After proving he could keep up with the rap trio they welcomed him into their world. Rich talks about the process of making the film and how he was able to get Hollywood A lister, Michael Fassbender, involved. Gerard ‘Boom Boom’ Healy is an ex-pro boxer. He talks about growing up in the notorious West Belfast area of Lenadoon. While growing up, fighting was the quickest way to earn respect in the community. Gerard gained a reputation for being one of the best fighters in the district. Although he had become known for fighting, Gerard was anything but a bully. Many of his street fights resulted from standing up for people being bullied. Gerard’s reputation for being a good street fighter led to someone suggesting he join the boxing club. He decided to try it and instantly fell in love with the sport. Being in his early 20s meant he had a lot of ground to make up, as most of the boxers had been competing since age 11. But this didn’t him off. Gerard went all with boxing and picked up an amateur title. He decided to turn professional, winning his debut. He mixed it with some of the best in Ireland during his career. He even fought Liverpool boxing legend and former world champion Liam Smith. When Gerard decided to bring down the curtain on his career, he stayed involved through coaching local lads. Some of the lads had shown some ability, but they lacked experience. This led to Gerard starting his semi-pro promotion, W & H Promotions. His promotion gets fights for people with no experience and ex-fighters. W & H Promotions has been going from strength to strength over the years and is preparing for its biggest event. Liam Shannon is the owner and head coach at Fight Academy Ireland. He sits down with us fresh off the back of doing Paul Hughes' PFL world title fight. He began by watching UFC DVDs and jotting down notes, then taught himself to sign up for a class on the other side of the city. He eventually opened his own gym and became a professional MMA fighter himself. Liam had a fight career before becoming Belfast's number-one MMA coach. He talks about the ups and downs of the fight game. He tells us about the difference in making weight when fighting compared to today's fighters. Since retiring from his career, Liam has built FAI from strength to strength. The gym is now home to world champions, professional fighters, and people who want to stay fit. It has become a pillar of the community. In 2024, a freak accident during a training session left pro-Ryan Curtis paralyzed from the neck down. Liam talks about the day it happened and how he felt. Although it looked as if there was only a tiny chance of Ryan making a recovery, it was enough for Liam to believe in. He knew that Ryan's mindset was different from most people's and kept the faith. Today, Ryan Curtis is back on his feet and able to walk again. Even though Liam has been retired for several years, he continues to train to stay in fighting shape. Living and studying away from home helped build Haileigh’s confidence. So much so that she found the strength to go to the police and tell them everything that had happened from age 7-17. The police then charged her stepfather, and he was brought in front of a judge. He was found guilty and given a custodial sentence. Haileigh’s bravery and confidence were so that she waved her right to anonymity.After the conviction, Haileigh started ‘Renegade Advocacy,’ an organization that is dedicated to helping other victims and survivors of sexual abuse. Ged became ‘TikTok famous’ by posting his party boy antics. He was already working in the content creation space by doing online marketing for different companies. But when he moved into a penthouse apartment in Belfast city centre with friend, Geady, they decided the should post clips of the fun they were having. The videos of them hitting the Belfast club scene proved very popular and instantly made the lads online celebrities.Everyone wanted to party with Ged and Geady. They were getting invited to nightclubs, the drinks were on the house, and so were the drugs. Their apartment became the exclusive after-hours spot; everyone wanted to be on the entry list.While the lifestyle sounds like a young man’s dream, Ged was still feeling an emptiness inside. Something was missing, but he didn’t know what. After being invited to a church service, he felt that hole being filled. He knew he wanted to give his life to God, but he also didn’t want to miss out on the social events he had coming up with. So he tried to hold off until he couldn’t hold off. He got baptized and became born again. Since committing to his faith, Ged hasn’t been happier. He is still creating content, but now it’s all about spreading the word of Jesus.
