WL//WH Premiere: this occasional society meets Samatha Dubs - "A Gift of Time" (from the "A Gift of Time" EP) [Bricolage] The EP title track, "Gift of Time,” places ‘street sound’ field recordings, such as distant conversations, a baby’s laugh, and a car travelling over puddled streets, underneath a vivid, glassy, crisp sheet of bustling and fickle synthetic instrumentation churned by a heady slow-paced rambling of intricate groovy percussion patterns. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Glasgow's DIY label Bricolage presents the result of a beautiful cross-European collaboration project in the form of "A Gift of Time". After connecting online through a mutual appreciation of each other's music, and a shared preference for avoiding the noise and drama of social media, Danish producer 'Samatha Dubs' and UK artist 'this occasional society' began exchanging ideas with no fixed plan and no expectations beyond seeing where the process might lead. Working entirely remotely, the pair developed an iterative process. With 'Samatha Dubs' sending sketches and source material to 'this occasional society', who would reshape them and introduce melodic elements before returning them for further creative iterating, editing, mixing and mastering. The resulting EP balances intricate rhythms, texture and experimentation with a melodic sensibility that runs throughout its four tracks. Drawing on experimental soundscapes, hip-hop production and dub techniques, ambient music and classic instrumental electronica, "A Gift of Time" occupies a space between rhythmic exploration and melodic electronic composition. Four tracks that, whilst short in nature, are rich in serenity and strange allure. Fragmented motifs and a glitchy undertow that submerse you into an almost nostalgic loop. The EP's tracks developed organically through the exchange of ideas between the two artists, resulting in music that feels simultaneously playful, unpredictable and deeply considered. The title, meant to reflect a literal meeting of minds in our time, is also intended as a respectful nod back to classic dub collaborations from the past. That inspired him to get turntables & his 1st synthesizer. That love of synthesizers would accidentally find him cutting his teeth playing in post-hardcore bands in the early 2000’s. He would then go on to start the Bay Area experimental electronic & indie sleeze label Pish Posh of North America with then bandmate Patric Fallon. They would go on to do a string of releases for artist & bands History Invades, Casy & Brian, Triangles, Up Mine Sunshine, Lazor Sword, Ghost On Tapes, & All Teeth & Knuckles among many more. The label focused on East Bay “house party artist” in the beginning but would later find the artist on the label regularly playing venues like, 222 Hyde, Arrow Bar, Rickshaw Stop, & The Mezzanine. Eventually the label would dissolve due to Aldo Giovanni’s substance abuse. Musically he went silent for many years. And sometimes emotive, which can represent people's dreams to live a better life. This new work is the result of years of research and refinement in defining an aesthetic that merges the acid imagery with the song form and melody. Alongside the usual suspects (808, 303, analog and digital synthesizers), new acoustic and electric elements (drums, guitar, bass) are introduced. The result of this mix is a personal reinterpretation of the sounds from the '90s alternative music scene.
