The Rapist, The Survivor, The Reckoning: Beyond the Netflix Documentary 'The Predator of Seville' Gabrielle Vega's Fight Continues

This episode is a powerful and deeply important conversation. Joining host Jennie, is Gabrielle Vega. Her story is currently featured on Netflix and the documentary is called 'The Predator of Seville'. As a newly graduated High School student, on a gap year trip with other recent high school graduates in Spain, 19 year old Gabrielle was drugged and raped by her tour guide. A man that was trusted with her care and safety. A wolf in sheep clothing. What followed for Gabrielle, wasn't just the trauma and PTSD from being raped, but the heavy realisation that she was not alone...that the man who attacked her had raped many other women and girls over the course of many many years. Sadly, one girl lost her life. Where many would step back and retreat, Gabrielle chose to step forward. She took on the Spanish judicial system in pursuit of justice, not just for herself, but for every survivor who had been silenced, overlooked and fear mongered. She spent years of her life fighting to have this monster be held to account for his crimes against women. Gabrielle "won". The serial rapist who targeted her and changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others', was found guilty.Shockingly, he walks free; never spending a day in jail. in this episode, Jennie and Gabrielle talk openly about that journey; navigating the rape reporting process, the realities survivors face within the judicial system and the broader issues surrounding support, advocacy and action. This is an emotive, and powerful episode and shines a bright light on the dark corners and failings of our "judicial" systems globally. More and more people are beginning to look inward and acknowledge something that, for a long time, was ignored or pushed aside; their past. We’re seeing a real shift, where individuals are starting to recognise how unresolved trauma shows up in their present-day lives. Whether that’s through relationship struggles, patterns of self-sabotage, challenges with self-worth, or even the way we parent, there’s a growing awareness that our past experiences don’t just stay in the past...they shape who we are today. And that awareness is powerful. It’s an important first step. But here’s the thing- it’s only a portion of what’s actually required to change your circumstances. Because identifying the source of your trauma doesn’t automatically heal it.On this weeks episode, host Jennie is joined by Robert Brennan, on the the UK's leading mindset specialists and trauma recovery coaches. He works with people not just to understand their past, but how to HEAL it. Robert and Jennie explore what it really means to draw a line under trauma. The Great Parenting Divide: When Parenting Differences End Friendships with Sarah Knight, Founder of FoundHerFire

Parenting doesn’t just shape our kids. It quietly reshapes our friendships too.Today’s episode is a real one. Host Jennie is joined by Sarah Knight, founder of FoundHerFire and host of the podcast It’s Got Pockets, and they get into the messy, often unspoken tension that can creep in when our parenting styles don’t align.Because let’s be honest, friendships can turn into… friendSHITS real quick when you and your friends have completely different views on discipline, screen time, independence, gender dynamics, or what’s “right” for your kids.Sarah and Jennie talk about how these differences don’t just impact our children; they can strain long-term friendships, create awkward school gate dynamics, and even spark quiet competition between parents who actually like each other. So how do we navigate it? Why does parenting bring out this competitive edge in so many of us? And is it possible to stay close to people whose parenting choices you fundamentally disagree with? This conversation is honest, nuanced, and probably going to hit close to home. You can find Sarah Knight here:Website: FOUNDHER FIRE — Sarah KnightInstagram: @foundherfireYou can find Jennie Guay here:Website: Jg Premier Divorce & Breakup Coaching & Advisory | Step Parenting | UKInstagram: @whywhisperpodcast and @jennieg_premierdivorcecoach Book: Howie Blend: Playdate Adventures with Family and Friends: Amazon.co.uk: Guay, Jennie: 9781919623108: Books Hosted on Acast. Nathan's Story: I was Raped When I was 8 Years Old and It Changed Me Forever, with guest Nathan Spiteri

Trigger Warning: Child rape and sexual abuse/assaultAccording to the latest statistics provided by Rape Crisis UK, 1 in 6 children has been sexually abused. This statistic is of course only representative of the cases of sexual abuse that have been reported. Unfortunately most cases go unreported. Statistics indicate that 40% of adults who are raped will not report. And, unreported childhood cases of sexual abuse and rape are much higher, with statistics indicating that 72% of adults who experienced sexual abuse as a child, did NOT tell anyone or report it at the time of the abuse. Child rape and sexual abuse is something that is far more common and prevalent than anyone would like to admit. Harry's Story: ADHD and Addiction...the Linkages and Realities

*Trigger Warning: Addiction and Mental HealthAlcoholism and addiction continues to be the theme of the podcast this month. We know alcohol is a drug. We know it's been classified as the most dangerous and damaging drug in the UK above heroine and crack cocaine. And, we know its' destroying lives and families at an alarming rate. But, what many people don't know, is that there is a link between those who have ADHD and alcoholism/addiction . According to Rehabs UK:between 33% and 44% of young people with ADHD experience alcohol misuse or dependencypeople with ADHD are 5-10 x more likely to have alcohol addiction than those without ADHD Research indicates that impulsive and reckless behaviour, as well as high novelty seeking traits, which are common symptoms of ADHD, are high risk factors for substance abuse. And 70% of young adults with both substance abuse issues and ADHD report that they use alcohol or substance as a means to self medicate; an attempt to switch off an over active brain or attempting to slow down racing thought processes. The links and correlation between ADHD and addiction is very much misunderstood and often over looked.Joining host Jennie in today's episode is Harry Martin. Harry is diagnosed ADHD and has battled with addiction most of his life. Harry's experience with substance abuse started as young as 12 years old and carried on into adulthood. Now, in his 30's, Harry is living alcohol free. On this episode, he very honestly tells his story of how having ADHD has a direct correlation to his addiction issues. At the height of his addiction, Harry was homeless and living for his next drink or high. With the support of his mom and wife, and with the birth of his daughter, Harry is now on a path to sobriety. But, it is not without its daily challenges. This episode is raw and confronting. Harry holds nothing back. This is a must listen for anyone with ADHD or similar, battling addiction, and feeling like there's no way to quiet your mind. Jennifer's Story: I am the Child of an Alcoholic...It Runs in My Family

TRIGGER WARNING: Alcoholism and Death1 in 5 people in the UK are affected by a parents drinking (Nacoa Study)Over 600,000 people in the UK are currently alcohol dependent. Of these, only 18% are receiving treatmentAlcohol abuse is the biggest risk factor for DEATH, ill health and disease and disability among 14 to 49 year olds in the UKIn 2020, there were almost 1 million alcohol related hospital admissions in England; putting a heavy strain on the NHS. Alcohol abuse and consumption costs the NHS an estimated £3.5 billion per year in England and costs an estimated £2.1 billion per year to society as a whole.Millions of children grow up in households where one or both parents struggle with alcohol addition. Often times, the addiction goes hand-in-hand with domestic abuse and child abuse/neglect. This is an ugly reality that so many people want to ignore or excuse away. Many parents carry shame or guilt around their addiction, never facing it head on or fail to see it as dysfunctional, as it's generational trauma passed on. The long term ramifications and impact of alcohol abuse on the family and on society can be catastrophic, and is destroying the childhoods and healthy development of too many kids.Joining host Jennie on today's episode is Jennifer Payne. She is a NACOA Ambassador (National Association for Children of Alcoholics) and the child of an Alcoholic. Jennifer speaks candidly about how her mothers alcoholism consumed her childhood and still affects her life to this day, as well as discusses the complexities around what happens to the mother-daughter relationship when the mother is an alcoholic, and how that can present. Alcoholism caused the deaths of several people in Jennifer's family and she addresses the realities of generational alcoholism and trauma. Many carry shame, guilt and embarrassment around having an alcoholic parent or BEING an alcoholic parent. In sharing her story and being so raw, Jennifer allows others to feel seen and heard. With so many people sharing the same or similar experience with alcoholism, no one needs to feel alone. Sarah's Story: I'm the Child of an Alcoholic

TRIGGER WARNING: Alcoholism, Mental Health and DeathThere are approx 3 million children in the UK living with and alcoholic parent (Nacoa Study)Kids of alcoholic parent(s) are 6x more likely to witness domestic abuse, 3x more likely to consider suicide, 2x more likely to become an alcoholic (Nacoa Study)Alcohol was named as the MOST harmful drug in a study that ranked 20 drugs in accordance with the harm they cause to othersAlcohol was given a harm score of 72 out of 100 whilst Heroine and Crack Cocaine were ranked a harm score of 55 out of 100 and 54 out of 100January is often the month when many people take a break from alcohol ("dry January"). Some do it to recalibrate after over indulging over the Christmas period and some find themselves really taking a step back and assessing their relationship with alcohol; hopeful for a healthier year ahead. The topic of alcohol and alcoholism is often avoided. Many people laugh off the severity and facts of alcoholism in the UK because many people are too uncomfortable to reflect on their own relationship with alcohol; perhaps out of fear they themselves may have a problem with it. So, we normalise alcohol use - there always seems to be a good reason or excuse to have a drink. But it's never just ONE drink....is it. Alcohol abuse is destroying the lives of children and families across the UK at and alarming rate. And yet, so many of us are still in denial. Sarah Drage is a Nacoa Ambassador (National Association for Children of Alcoholics), a TED X Speaker and Mental Health Advocate. She is also the child of an Alcoholic. Sarah joins host Jennie in todays episode to share her story of growing up with an alcoholic parent, and how it negatively impacted her as a child, teenager and now adult. She details watching her father die of alcoholism and how it ravaged his mind and body, and how it has impacted her mental health and relationship with alcohol. Many of us carry shame and embarrassment around our experience growing up around alcoholics and/or our own relationship with the drug. This episode aims to shine a light on this all too common experience and feeling(s) and take the loneliness out of it. If this sounds like you or your experience as a child of an alcoholic, you are not alone. There are so many people who share your story and are available and eager to help, listen and support. Battling Body Image and Size Post Baby or Menopause? ThinkShape App is Supporting Women During Life Changes, with Creator and Founder Anna Berkeley

As women, our bodies drastically change several times throughout the course of our lives; puberty, pregnancy, post-pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause. Many of us have a challenging relationship with our bodies and body image at the best of times. But these times in our life can make dressing our bodies especially daunting...sometimes even soul destroying. It doesn't help that each designer and brand seems to have sizing that doesn't match up ( a size 12 in one shop, could be a size 14 in another), and that the changing rooms are built like small sweaty torture chambers with lighting that would make the most beautiful woman in the world recoil. Shopping and and dressing our body shapes, is, for the most part, exhausting and erodes self confidence. For some, the solution is simple - hire a stylist and personal shopper! But of course, for the majority of us, this is a luxury we simply cannot afford. Joining host Jennie on todays episode is Anna Berkeley. She has worked in the fashion industry for 30 years. She was a buyer for Prada, Margaret Howell and Selfridges. For the last 17 years she has worked as a private stylist and body shape expert. Utilizing her in depth experience and understanding of the changing female body, Anna has identified and created the solution for women who struggle with understanding their body shape and how to dress it. She has created the ThinkShape App. It uses body mapping techniques and analysis to help users understand their bodies and what looks good on them without the expense of a personal stylist and appointment. Anna says her mission is to take the anxiety out of choosing clothes by teaching women everything she has learned over many years of styling. Her dream is for women to accept, embrace and honour their beautiful bodies whilst truly understanding what works best for them. Puberty and Menstruation Shame: Why Aren't We Talking to Our Kids? with guest Libby Tanswell-Gidney Founder of Ove Care

1 in 3 girls don't feel prepared for their first period2 in 5 girls have been shamed or teased because of their period85% of girls have tried to hide the fact they are on their period50% of girls don't know what's happening to their bodies when they get their period60% of girls feel scared and embarrassed when they get their period81% of women feel concerns around their periods are not taken seriouslyThink back to the moment when you first started your period, or learned a bit about puberty and how babies are made. For most of us, these were tough years filled with confusion, angst, feelings of discomfort, nervousness... but also, excitement for what's to come. Whilst we were provided with some education in school and maybe the occasional home about what to expect, unfortunately, for most of us, this time was not met with an abundance of information and facts, so we were ill prepared and left to navigate this on our own.Today, whilst puberty and menstruation and sex are taught in schools to some degree, kids also have the internet. They have iphones, ipads and devices that parents have given them, where, with the stroke of a key, they can find images, videos (many pornographic in nature) and information (or misinformation) on anything and everything related to puberty and sex. Something we didn't have, or if we did, was extremely limited in comparison to today. There are HUGE risks associated with this that parents may not be wise to. On todays episode, host Jennie is joined by Libby Tanswell-Gidney. She is the 22 year old Founder of Ove Care, which is an age appropriate App providing children of all ages with information on puberty and menstruation. Jennie and Libby not only dive into the features and functionality of the Ove Care app, but the ever growing NEED for it in todays online climate. They talk about issues surrounding misinformation and accessibility to dangerous content online, the importance of both girls and BOYS understanding menstruation, fertility and the female body and how parents can utilise the app as a tool to navigate this complex time in their child's life and development. This episode is a MUST listen for parents with pre teen children - boys and girls! You kind find more information on Ove Care here:Website: www.ovecare.comInstagram: @ove.careTikTok: @ove.care You can follow the Why Are We Whispering? podcast on:Instagram: @whywhisperpodcast and @whywhisperthewholestory Hosted on Acast. (In)Fertility Treatments: A Person Issue, Not a Women's Issue with Natalie Silverman Co Founder of Fertility Matters at Work

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 6 people globally are affected by infertility. Since the 1970's, 8 million babies have been born through medical/fertility intervention. The requirement for fertility treatment is on the rise. And it's not just due to fertility issues with heterosexual couples, rather, in recent years, there has been a steady increase in single people and same-sex couples building and expanding their families through fertility treatment. Regardless of your reasoning for requiring it, fertility treatments are costly, time consuming and physically and emotionally taxing. In addition to the personal challenges that we face during fertility treatment, shockingly 40+ years on, there are STILL societal challenges that many people face; causing intense feelings of shame, guilt and embarrassment. A World Filled with False Confidence and Low Self Esteem ...Why and How Have We Got Here? with guest, award winning Life Coach and best selling Author, Holly Matthews

Confidence and Self Esteem, whilst are crucial components to achieving and feeling happiness, often get over looked in terms of what we teach our children in schools and in the home. We don't tend to focus on HOW to develop confidence and self esteem, rather we mostly assume one should just HAVE it. As a result, many of us grow into people pleasers, or focus on others needs above our own. Which causes deep rooted feelings of loneliness, loss, and uncertainty; unsure of who we truly are and what makes up the essence of us. A lack of or low self esteem is a significant developmental problem for kids currently. According to a recent study, in the US, 80% of kids entering year 1 at school score high on self esteem inventory. By year 5 that starts to decrease significantly down to only 20% of kids scoring high on self esteem and by high school graduation, that number plummets to a mere 5% of kids leaving high school with any semblance of confidence or self esteem. On todays episode, host Jennie is joined by Holly Matthews. She is the founder of the award winning self development brand "The Happy Me Project" and best selling author of "The Happy Me Project: The No Nonsense Guide to Self Belief". Together, they tackle the hard questions of what is contributing to the plummet in children's self esteem, who is responsible for ensuring our kids are taught how to cultivate their confidence and self esteem, and why it is VITAL to our well being and personhood. We are living in a world where false confidence rules and self esteem is virtually non existent. Jennie and Holly bring a no nonsense and real conversation about where we are going wrong with our kids and why we have generations of adults faking their confidence. "I was 8 yrs old when a was sexually abused by my dads friend"... Jeremy Indika shares his survivor story

Trigger Warning1 in 10 children in the UK experience sexual abuse.*500,000 children are estimated to be sexually abused in any given year in the UK***National Crime Agency**Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual AbuseThis weeks episode, host Jennie is joined by Jeremy Indika. Jeremy Indika is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. His abuse started at age 8. His abuser was a trusted 35 year old male family friend, more specifically, his fathers friend and colleague. Like most paedophiles, Jeremy's abuser hid in plain sight in a profession that provided him access, and that deemed him caring and trustworthy; a nurse at the hospital his father worked in as a doctor. Jeremy was 27 years old when he finally came to terms with his childhood sexual abuse and trauma. And he decided to turn his trauma into something positive. He is a very active Child Abuse Prevention Advocate and is the Founder of 'Something to Say'. Not only does Jeremy share his story on this weeks episode, but Jennie and Jeremy, have a very real, very honest and open (and uncomfortable) conversation about many of the contributing factors that increase your child's exposure and risk to being sexually abused/exploited, including internet access, device use, social circle engagement. They also dive into the role mainstream pornography has taken in increasing the instances of paedophilia and sexual abuse, and our responsibilities as parents and a collective society to mitigate the risks to our kids. With the statics and instances of child sexual abuse on the rise, we have a duty of care to be talking openly about this. Saying it out loud is the first step in tackling and eradicating this (or at the very least, stopping the rise, in its tracks). It's ugly and it's uncomfortable, but we must have the bravery and courage to call this increasing issue out...our children's lives depend on it. Poverty Isn't Just a Developing Country's Problem, It's Happening Next Door with Heather Etheridge, CEO, Manchester Youth Zone

What do you see when you hear the word ' POVERTY'? A war torn country? Starving, unclothed children on the other side of the world? Regardless, of how poverty entered into their lives, we cannot ignore that half of children in Manchester alone, are falling through the proverbial cracks. And without the support of organizations such as 'Manchester Youth Zone' and people like our guest today, Heather Etheridge, they will be lost in the ether. Many of us grow up in a household where organised religion was/is practiced. I grew up Catholic; studied and did all of my sacraments, church on Sunday and holidays, and even went to Catholic Primary and High School. But it never really connected with me. Or, I never connected to it. On today's episode, host Jennie, is joined by Sunday Times best selling author, TV Presenter and Psychic Medium, TJ Higgs. I Blew the Whistle on the Rochdale Paedophile Gangs and Guess What, There's More...: Maggie Oliver's Story

Trigger Warning: Child Sexual Abuse and RapeThe Rochdale Paedophile Gangs made headlines across the UK. There were even a couple of TV dramatizations made, one of which being 'Three Girls'. None of these horrors would have come to light had it not been for one woman - Maggie Oliver. Maggie saved and continues to save thousands of children across the UK from organised paedophile gangs. Child rapists, who are known to police, but many of whom remain walking the streets and preying on children. On today's episode, host Jennie is joined by the courageous Maggie Oliver. She's a former police detective turned whistle blower. During Maggie's time in the police, she uncovered countless cases of paedophile gangs who were systemically targeting and raping children across the UK. Disturbingly, most of these horrific cases were covered up and buried by the police and judicial system in the UK. In order to save these children and future victims, Maggie had to quit her job in the police to blow the whistle on the corruption and neglect within the UKs police force. Maggie tells her story and shines a very bright light on the darkest and dingiest corners of the UK's "law enforcement" system. If you or someone you know is a victim of child sexual abuse, you can contact the Maggie Oliver Foundation for support: The Maggie Oliver Foundation - Helping Survivors of AbuseMaggie's book, ' Survivors: One Brave Detective's Battle to Expose the Rochdale Child Abuse Scandal' is also available on Amazon.
