Do You Have to Choose Between Purpose & Profit? Using Entrepreneurship to Fight Human Trafficking & Empowering Survivors (ft. Brandi Voth, Speaker, Founder & CEO of The Power Hat Co.)
What if the biggest lie we've been told is that we have to choose between making an impact & making an income? Between following our faith & building a successful business? In this special bonus episode of Why Not #DoBoth™, Kellie sits down with returning guest Brandi Voth to challenge the idea that purpose & profit are competing forces. Together, they explore why entrepreneurship can be one of the most powerful ways to serve others, how to build a business without losing yourself, & why women should never feel guilty for creating both impact & income.Brandi Voth is a social entrepreneur, speaker, & founder of The Power Hat Co., a social enterprise creating economic opportunities for survivors of human trafficking, & The Power Project, a leadership platform dedicated to helping leaders live & lead with purpose. What began as a desire to create dignified employment has grown into a global mission spanning Uganda, Thailand, Indonesia, & beyond—proving that business can be a powerful vehicle for lasting change. In this conversation, Kellie & Brandi dive into the tension so many purpose-driven women feel: balancing faith with entrepreneurship, discerning between a "good" opportunity & a "God" opportunity, charging confidently for the gifts you've been given, & stewarding every opportunity with integrity. Brandi shares how she built a mission-driven company without compromising her values, why success isn't measured by revenue alone, & how living out your calling often means taking the first step before you feel ready.Whether you're building a business, leading a nonprofit, navigating a career pivot, or simply wondering what your next step is, this episode will remind you that you don't have to choose between serving others & succeeding. Sometimes the life you're called to build isn't an "either-or" it's a "both-and."Show Notes~Connect with Brandi: https://www.instagram.com/brandivoth/https://the-powerproject.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandivothEnjoyed this episode? Is Your Career Worth Your Personal Life? Finding Balance in Military Medicine (Ft. Kaiti Walter, PA-C)
Can you build an incredible career without sacrificing your personal life? Is putting your profession first always worth it? And what does “having it all” actually look like when you’re serving in the military, working in emergency medicine, and trying to build a life you love outside of work? Remember: “The Navy owes you nothing, but it can give you everything.”Kellie sits down with Kaiti Walter, PA-C, Lieutenant Commander, Navy physician assistant, emergency medicine provider, educator, & military leader, for an honest conversation about ambition, burnout, relationships, and redefining success. Your Story Matters: Why the Military Needs Better Storytelling in the Social Media Age (ft. Jarred Reid-Dixon, Navy Public Affairs Officer)
What if one of the military's greatest recruiting, mentorship, & leadership tools is already in our hands? Kellie sits down with one of her closest friends, Lieutenant Commander (Sel) Jarred Reid-Dixon. The two have known each other since 2013, when they first met through the Naval Academy, and over the years they've shared not only a passion for serving in the Navy but also a passion for marketing, storytelling, & connecting with people. This is less of an interview and more of a conversation between two longtime friends who care deeply about the future of military storytelling. Before diving in, it's important to note that the views and opinions shared throughout this conversation are their own, based on their personal experiences, and do not represent the official views of the Department of the Navy or Department of Defense/War.Outside of the military, Kellie has built a platform through podcasting, public speaking, pageantry, & content creation, while Jarred has pursued passions in marketing, Pilates instruction, and strategic communications. Together, they explore what they've learned from balancing careers in uniform with creative pursuits outside of it & why those experiences have shaped the way they think about leadership and storytelling.Throughout the conversation, Kellie and Jarred discuss:Why storytelling is one of the military's most powerful, & often underutilized, leadership tools. How the Navy and other military organizations could better partner with creators and influencers to reach the next generation. The difference between chasing followers and telling stories that genuinely make an impact.Practical advice for service members who want to share their experiences online while protecting their careers and maintaining professionalism. Why every creator should identify their "why" before they ever hit publish & why that purpose will matter when criticism, challenges, or difficult conversations inevitably come. This isn't a conversation about becoming famous on social media. It's a conversation about using your voice responsibly, representing your profession with integrity, & recognizing that authentic stories from real people often have the greatest impact. Whether you're an active-duty service member, veteran, military spouse, future officer, or someone trying to build a purpose-driven platform of your own, this episode offers practical insights on leading with authenticity and sharing your story with intention. Because at the end of the day, people don't connect with organizations, they connect with people. And your story just might inspire someone else's next chapter.Show Notes~Loved Jarred? How I Organize my Multi-Passionate Lifestyle (FBF)
“You can’t do it all.”“You just don’t have the time.”Kellie has heard these excuses countless times whenever people talk about why they aren’t pursuing their passions, interests, or goals. But she has never accepted them as limitations. From a young age, she made the decision to fully pursue the things that inspired her, refusing to believe she had to choose between career success and a fulfilling personal life. She breaks down the systems, habits, and mindset shifts that have helped her build a life rooted in purpose instead of burnout. From prioritization and communication to time management and even color-coding, this episode provides practical tools to help others organize their lives, pursue their passions with confidence, and stop believing they have to sacrifice one dream for another.A fulfilling, purpose-driven life is possible, and this episode will show you how to start building one.Original air date: May 12, 2021.Disclaimer: Views and opinions are personal and do not reflect that of the DOD/DOW.Enjoyed this episode? Become the Woman You Needed to See: Leadership, Visibility & Refusing to Play Small (ft. Angelena Garland, U.S. Army Captain)
What if the dreams you thought were “too big” were actually preparing you for your purpose all along? In this episode, Kellie interviews Angelena C. Garland, Army Captain, leader, mentor, and social media brand ambassador, for a conversation about ambition, identity, leadership, and refusing to shrink yourself to fit someone else’s expectations.Angelena opens up about almost not joining the Army at all, and how one recruiter changed everything simply by speaking to her like a person, not a number. She reflects on being a young woman with dreams of modeling, leadership, visibility, and impact, and how, despite those around her doubting her, the Army became the vehicle that aligned with all of those goals rather than limiting them. Angelena shares how ignoring a high school boyfriend who told her she couldn't pursue her dreams changed the course of her life, and why the right partner supports your growth instead of limiting your potential.Angelena also shares her journey from enlisted Soldier to Army officer through the Army’s Green to Gold program and ROTC, eventually graduating Summa Cum Laude and becoming a respected leader in public affairs. But beyond rank and accolades, one of the most powerful parts of her story is how she has consistently shown up online since 2013 as her full self: bold, feminine, ambitious, beautiful, disciplined, and deeply rooted in service. In a world that often tells women they must choose between professionalism and personality, Angelena’s story challenges that entirely. She talks about why representation matters, why women need to SEE women leading in these spaces, and how using the gifts God gave you should never be something you apologize for. This episode is about purpose, visibility, supportive relationships, faith, leadership, and becoming the person you needed to see.Show Notes ~Connect with Angelena: https://www.instagram.com/iam_angelena/?hl=enPost Referenced in the show:https://www.instagram.com/p/DX-HHDgiaCT/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==Enjoyed this episode? From Naval Officer to Hollywood: Making Time for the Passion You Can’t Ignore (ft. Rylan Tuohy, Viral Sensation, Writer, Director, Naval Academy Grad)
Most people wait until life slows down to pursue what they love. Rylan built a filmmaking career in the middle of one of the most demanding environments in the country. Before content creation was a career, before “doing both” was a trend, he was a physics major at the Naval Academy, making viral videos in his dorm room, proving you didn’t have to choose between discipline and creativity. In this episode, Kellie interviews longtime friend Rylan Tuohy: writer, director, entrepreneur, former Naval Officer, and someone she has known for over 15 years. Kellie and Rylan attended the United States Naval Academy together in 2013 and 2014, during which Kellie watched him become one of the earliest examples of what it truly meant to “do both.” While balancing the demands of the Academy and studying applied physics, Rylan was also creating videos, producing the infamous Navy football and Army-Navy "Spirit Spots," and building viral YouTube content long before influencing or content creation were considered viable career paths. The two even worked together as Army-Navy game correspondents and collaborated on several of the videos that helped make Rylan one of the most recognizable creators in the military space at the time.In this conversation, Rylan opens up about balancing his creative passion with the structure and pressure of military life, why he chose the Naval Academy over film school, and how he learned to be incredibly intentional with his time. He talks about creating without overthinking, trusting his instincts, and making time for what he wanted to do — not just what he had to do. Kellie and Rylan also dive into the moment he realized storytelling and filmmaking were no longer just hobbies but his true calling. He shares what it was like to leave the Navy, bet on himself fully, and pursue production and Hollywood full-time, a decision that ultimately led him to found his own production company and direct projects tied to Top Gun: Maverick, Masters of the Air, The Terminal List, and more. This is a vulnerable and honest conversation about creativity, pressure, transition, discipline, identity, and learning to pursue a life that feels aligned rather than simply stable. Rylan is truly one of the pioneers of what “doing both” looks like, and Kellie is honored to finally share his story.Links to some of Rylan’s most iconic videos!Naptown Funk (8.7M views) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTt-XE0XYMMWe Give a Ship (517k views): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY2J21Uti6gStar Wars at NAVY (406K views): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svU2317XiPwWhat Does the Zoomie Say? My Personal Tips to Prepare You For Plebe Summer, Navy Boot Camp, OCS, or ODS! (FBF)
In this episode, Kellie talks about one of the most common questions she’s asked: how do you prepare for Navy training? Whether you’ve just enlisted, commissioned, or been selected for an Officer program—heading to Boot Camp, OCS, ODS, or even the U.S. Naval Academy (the best university in the country, if you ask her)—one thing is certain: preparation is everything.Kellie originally shared this episode on her previous show, MissUnderstood, to help future Sailors and Officers get ready for one of the most challenging and rewarding chapters of their lives based on her personal experience. She breaks down what you need to know before you ever step foot in a Navy training environment—because signing the dotted line was just the beginning.Drawing from her experience as a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and nearly 5 years as a Navy recruiter & working in recruiting, Kellie offers practical advice on what to focus on before you arrive, how to mentally and physically prepare, and what it truly means to embody the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment.Get ready to take the leap! She Didn't Fit the Stereotype, So She Changed it: 5 Rejections, 1 Calling (ft. Ange Everington, Firefighter & Founder Blue Light Health Club)
You may not expect a firefighter to look like Ange Everington: confident, feminine, outspoken, vulnerable, and building a platform online--but that’s exactly the point. Kellie interviews Ange Everington, a full-time firefighter based in England, founder of The Blue Light Health Club, and a woman using both her career and her platform to show other women what’s possible.Ange shares how serving others was never just a job for her, it was a calling she felt from a young age. But finding where she was meant to serve took intention, self-awareness, and persistence. She talks about how she methodically worked through different paths before realizing firefighting was where she belonged, and why purpose is often less about instant clarity and more about continuing to pursue what keeps pulling you back. That persistence showed up again when it took her SIX attempts to get into the firefighter academy. This conversation goes deeper than career success. Kellie and Ange unpack why representation matters so much — especially for women in male-dominated spaces. Because people need to SEE women doing these jobs, leading in these rooms, speaking in schools, showing up online, and owning space unapologetically in order to believe they can too.Ange talks openly about why she chose to share her life on social media, not for attention, but because visibility creates permission. Every time a young woman sees someone who looks like her, balancing strength and femininity, leadership and softness, ambition and authenticity, it quietly expands what feels possible. The episode also touches on mental health, burnout, and the courage it took for Ange to temporarily step away from firefighting to reset and prioritize her well-being — something so many first responders silently struggle with. This is a conversation about tenacity, purpose, visibility, and the responsibility that comes with being the example you once needed yourself.Show Notes~Connect with Ange: https://www.instagram.com/angeeverington/Blue Light Health Club Info: https://www.bluelighthealthclub.co.uk/https://www.instagram.com/thebluelighthealthclub/Enjoyed this episode? Happy flashback Friday! In honor of Kellie speaking atHarvard University today (yay!!), bringing back one of the episodes from 2020 which discussed one of her favorite topics in her keynote: failure. We’ve all been through it: we fail, we cry, and then wefigure out how to get back up again. It’s tough, it sucks, and most of the timewe don’t understand why it has to be such a necessary part of the journey.Tough luck. Failure is 100% necessary to grow. We don’t hope to fail, but whenwe do, we learn. So… does that mean we ever really failed to begin with?In this episode, I’m transparent, sassy, and emotional (awinning combination) but most of all, I want to make sure you walk away with abetter understanding of why you needed to go through life’s hard parts to grow.My personal experience with failure ranges from falling at a state trackcompetition to bombing college exams, to changing my career in the Navy, tofinishing as the runner-up at MISS CALIFORNIA USA in January 2020.I’ll walk you through four reasons why failure may be thebest thing that’s ever happened to you, because I’ve been through it too, andhow to redefine what it really means to “fail.”Strap in, it’s an emotional one. Things I Wish I Could Tell Myself at the U.S. Naval Academy
Today, we go back in time to July 1, 2010: the day Kellie entered the U.S. Naval Academy and began her naval career.Four years of rigorous academics, leadership development, military training, and some of the most formative lessons of her life. But if she could go back to that version of herself then, what would she say to save herself from some of the unnecessary stress, anxiety, pressure, and worry? In this episode, Kellie goes back to herself as a fourth-class midshipman at the Naval Academy and shares everything she wishes she could have told herself then. What she wishes she knew when she was overwhelmed by the pressure, consumed by grades, distracted by the wrong things, and trying so hard to keep up in an environment that demands everything from you. This is the episode she wishes someone had handed her when she was in the middle of it.Some of the things she would have told herself:Grades do not define leadership.Hard work will always speak louder than rumors. Not everyone deserves access to your time, energy, or heart. The women beside you will matter more than you realize.Failure is not the end, it is often where growth begins.Your service selection will shape more of your life than you think. You do not have to have everything figured out right now.Kellie also opens up about what she would have done differently: who she would have given less of her time to, why female friendships mattered more than she realized, why protecting your peace and your reputation matters, and how trying something new can sometimes change the entire direction of your life. From service selection to relationships, pressure, identity, and the decisions that shape your future long after graduation, this episode is honest, reflective, and full of the perspective she wishes she had sooner. This episode is for anyone currently in the thick of it, feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, behind, or like everyone else has it figured out except you. They don’t.Disclaimer: Views and opinions are personal and do not reflect that of the DOD/DOW.Show Notes~Interested in applying? During moments when she feels out of control, she focuses on what she can hold onto: daily routines, health habits, her faith, and releasing outcomes she can’t force. Kellie shares what it meant to take life one day at a time (truly), give herself space to process without pressure, and learn how to move forward without pretending the pain wasn’t still there.Listeners can expect honest reflections and tangible takeaways, including:Trusting your timing, even when it doesn’t match your planAdvocating for yourself and allowing support instead of carrying it aloneProtecting your energy and removing what adds unnecessary pressureFocusing on what you can control when everything else feels uncertainTaking life one day at a time, without needing to have the whole future figured outWhether you’re navigating fertility struggles or simply walking through a heavy season, this conversation is a reminder that you are not alone, even when it feels that way. The WORST “Professional” Advice We Ever Got (& Why We Ignored It) ft. Riley Tejeck
We’ve all been given bad advice: the kind that makes you question everything, but later teaches you exactly who to listen to (and who not to). Kellie and Riley Tejcek open up about the worst “professional” advice they’ve ever received and how those moments shaped their confidence, their careers, and their ability to trust their instincts. From blunt warnings to stay off social media to being told what women “shouldn’t” do in uniform, they’re pulling back the curtain on the kind of guidance that could have derailed them, and how they learned to find their own voice instead.Advice shapes you. Mentors shape you. But finding the right ones matters. Kellie and Riley talk about how to recognize good versus bad advice, why it’s important to seek multiple opinions, and how to use your spidey senses when something just feels off. This is a raw, transparent conversation about leadership, integrity, and trusting your inner compass, especially when the noise gets loud.Riley Tejcek is a Marine Corps Logistics Officer, former Division I softball player at George Washington University, and Team USA Bobsled athlete who was named Female Marine Corps Athlete of the Year in 2022. She’s also the current Ms. Military 2024 and author of the new children’s book If You Can Dream It, Be It — a heartfelt story about trailblazing, taking chances, and believing in the endless possibilities ahead.Key takeaways:Not all “professional” advice deserves to be followedTrust your spidey senses — if it feels off, it probably isSeek mentors who truly see your potentialHandling poor advice: take what serves you, leave the restFinding good advice: ask around, listen deeply, and follow your intuitionDisclaimer: Views and opinions are personal and do not reflect that of the DOD.Show Notes~ Riley's book: https://a.co/d/7axUM2qConnect with Riley: https://www.instagram.com/riley.tejcek/?hl=enIf you or someone you know in the military has experienced sexual assault or harassment, confidential 24/7 help is available through the DoD Safe Helpline (1-877-995-5247) or RAINN (1-800-656-HOPE). THE PROPOSAL STORY!! How He asked ft. Then-Fiancé Austin Sbrocchi (FBF)
Five years ago—on October 24, 2020, at 5:30 PM—Austin got down on one knee at the beautiful El Matador Beach in Malibu, California, and completely changed my life. In honor of that unforgettable moment, I’m re-releasing one of my most popular episodes from my original show “MissUnderstood” for the very first Flash Back Friday (FBF) edition of Why Not Do Both- episode originally aired October 30, 2020.Austin & I got engaged that evening in what can only be described as a Bachelor-caliber proposal. He shocked me (and everyone else) with how stunning, thoughtful, and romantic it was—and honestly, I still can’t believe it happened. I essentially blacked out during it all. It was the most romantic moment of my life. Even though we’ve been married for several years now, that proposal will always be one of the most special days of my life.It might sound controversial to say, but I still tell Austin that I was the happiest I’ve ever been that day—even more than on our wedding day—because I had never experienced that much pure joy in my entire life. And somehow, I love him even more now than I did standing on those cliffs, completely overwhelmed and so deeply happy. In this episode, we’re sharing all the details! Did I know? Was I suspicious? How long did he have the ring? When did he know I was “the one”? (Selfishly, I wanted to know all of these questions too—but I saved them for the podcast!) We were absolutely on cloud nine and so grateful for everyone’s sweet messages and well wishes.Tune in to relive that magical day with us, celebrate love, and kick off Flash Back Friday with one of my all-time favorite memories.Xoxo, KellieEnjoyed this episode?
