The Big Country - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 310
Ray is going back to the well of one of his favorite genres for his May selection on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM by recommending William Wyler's 1958 Western classic THE BIG COUNTRY! This film stars Gregory Peck (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, ROMAN HOLIDAY) as James McKay, a sailor magnate from the East who travels out West to marry Patricia (Played by Carroll Baker), an heiress to a cattle ranch whose father is deeply entrenched in a land war with a rival family lead by patriarch Rufus Hannassey, portrayed brilliantly by Burl Ives (who also won an Academy award for his performance). But when James refuses to take part in the feud, Patricia's view of him begins to change forcing James to reconsider his position and what he truly wants in life. With a stellar supporting cast including Charlton Heston (PLANET OF THE APES, SOYLENT GREEN) and Jean Simmons (THE HAPPY ENDING, BLACK NARCISSUS), THE BIG COUNTRY marked a sea change in the American Western as the mythical culture surrounding the tropes of the genre began to give way to the rise of the New Hollywood western of the late 60s/70s. Will the statements THE BIG COUNTRY makes on masculinity and pride prove enough to sway Rob over to its side? Or will it leave him wanting more? Tune in this week to find out! Pacific Rim/Atlantic Rim - A Copy of A Copy Ep. 205
It's time for a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY, so Ray and Rob have decided to shake things up a bit by having their first ever guest (on this show)! Their favorite co-host Mr. KittyKaiju is joining them for a conversation about one of his favorite movies ever, Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 monster epic, PACIFIC RIM, as well as the direct-to-video "remake", ATLANTIC RIM! Rob is very familiar with this trend of direct-to-video rip-offs from his tenure on the hallowed ground of Blockbuster Video. A constant confusion for customers, he never took the time to watch any of them. Does ATLANTIC RIM have any redeeming qualities? Or is it really just a blatant cash grab? The Devils - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 309
Rob is kicking off the month of May with his brand-new episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! He's continuing his recent trend of pushing Ray out of his comfort zone and taking his biggest swing yet, by recommending Ken Russell's controversial historical drama, THE DEVILS! This cult classic stars Oliver Reed (THE BROOD, OLIVER!) as Urbain Grandier, a Catholic priest who finds himself accused of witchcraft by a sexually repressed nun, Sister Jeanne (played by the amazing Vanessa Redgrave). THE DEVILS places itself at the intersection of biting commentary of both the church and the monarchy, as Grandier also finds himself the target of both the French monarchy and the Catholic Church itself as they seek to take control of the city of Loudon where Grandier has created a self-contained community based on the mutual respect for all religions. Originally rated-X upon release and banned in many countries, THE DEVILS will be Ray's toughest challenge this season! Will the outrageous subject matter turn Ray off? Or will the powerhouse performances by Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave once again be the saving grace that gets him to love this movie? Tune in this week to find out! A Perfect World: Hello Movies, My Old Friend Ep. 204
We're wrapping up the month of April on Car RayRob with a brand-new episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! For this episode, Ray and Rob have decided to revisit the 1993 crime drama, A PERFECT WORLD, starring Kevin Costner (BULL DURHAM, DANCES WITH WOLVES), Laura Dern (BLUE VELVET, CERTAIN WOMEN) and Clint Eastwood (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, DIRTY HARRY)! Clint also directed this story of an escaped convict who takes a young boy hostage for a road trip that sees an unlikely friendship spring from the inherent danger. A movie about dealing with childhood trauma in the moment and from the past, A PERFECT WORLD uses the backdrop of 1960's Texas to analyze the changing times and how the world isn't always black and white. Many an adult theme permeates this film, leaving Ray and Rob to wonder "what about this movie would draw a kid to enjoy it"? So, tune in to find out the answer to that question and the biggest question of all, does this movie still hold up? RRR (Rise. Roar. Revolt.) - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 308
For his April episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Ray has decided to bring Rob a pure spectacle, something that is a feast for the eyes with the ability to capture the imagination and heart of the viewer. He's doing this by recommending to Rob the 2022 Bollywood epic, RRR (RISE. ROAR. REVOLT.)! This fictionalized telling of the real-life meeting of Indian revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju takes on all the traits that make Bollywood such an entrancing genre. Larger than life action, enthralling colors and kinetic dance sequences that draw the eyes to screen at all times. There is no shortage of heart as this budding friendship is put to the test as Bheem attempts to find Malli, a young girl kidnapped for their village by English colonialists who have enlisted Raju to hunt down the man trying to rescue her. The spectacle of this film rivals much of what we see as the modern American blockbuster, but will Rob love it as much as Ray does? You'll have to tune in to find out! The Good, The Bad & The Ugly/The Good, The Bad, The Weird: A Copy of A Copy Ep. 204
For this month's episode of A COPY OF A COPY, Ray and Rob are revisiting a favorite genre, spaghetti westerns, to examine a remake they're dubbing the "spiritual remake". A movie that isn't a direct remake, but an homage to a specific film or genre. To do this, they're watching the Sergio Leone classic THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY and the 2008 South Korean homage, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD. Both films center on a trio of characters on the search for a treasure, but both take their own distinct paths to get to their explosive conclusions. Leone's classic holds the heart of many, which most call the best the genre has to offer, while its South Korean counterpart came at a time where the western genre was having a moment within their cultural film community. But does it do enough to truly capture the spaghetti western genre thus calling it a remake? Tune in to find out! How to Get Ahead in Advertising - Say Hello to My Little Film Ep. 307
We're kicking off the month of April with Rob's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! He continues to push Ray out of his comfort zone by recommending the 1989 Body Horror/Dark Comedy HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING! It centers on pompous ad executive Denis Bagley, who is neck deep in formulating a new campaign for a pimple cream, when he begins to question the moral validity of his profession. However, something decides to pop-up to force Denis back into the life he began to shun. This British cult classic stars Richard E. Grant (GOSFORD PARK, DEATH OF A UNICORN) in a truly Gonzo performance and sees him reteaming with director Bruce Robinson following their hit WITHNAIL AND I. A cynical and hard-hitting take on the state of advertising in the modern world, HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING finds a prescience for a world they didn't realize we would be living in in the year 2026. But will Bruce Robinson's rage at the late Thatcher-era England prove to be too preachy for Ray? Or will he be able to overcome the body horror elements to find something worthwhile? Spaceballs - Say Hello To My Little Film - Kid's Special! (Feat. Mr. KittyKaiju)
March is a five Monday month and that means it's time again for another Kid's special edition of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! That also means we're welcoming back Ray and Rob's favorite co-host, Mr. KittyKaiju! For his first episode of the season, Ray and Rob have decided to kick things off with a bang by recommending to him one of their favorite movies from their childhood, the 1987 Mel Brooks classic, SPACEBALLS! A send-up of all things Star Wars (with a mixture of other famous sci-fi franchises), the film centers on Lonestar, a rugged space smuggler who along with his sidekick Barf, are enlisted to rescue Princess Vespa and her companion droid Dot Matrix from the evil hands of Dark Helmet and his legion of Spaceballs! Starring Bill Pullman (INDEPENDANCE DAY, CASPER), Daphne Zuniga (THE SURE THING, MODERN GIRLS), John Candy (PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES, UNCLE BUCK) and Rick Moranis (STREETS OF FIRE, HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS), this comedy classic is Mel Brooks at the top of his game. A film for all ages! However, the generational divide is not always easy to traverse, so will Mr. KittyKaiju love this movie as much as Ray and Rob does? You're going to have to tune in to find out! Young Einstein - Hello Movies, My Old Friend - Ep. 203
It's almost the end of March and that means it's time for a brand-new episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! Ray and Rob have decided to revisit the 1988 Australian comedy YOUNG EINSTEIN! This passion project written/directed/starring Australian mad man Yahoo Serious is an absurdist fictional take on the life of renowned genius Albert Einstein. Throwing historical accuracy to the wind, Yahoo Serious takes young Albert from a humble apple farmer in the Australian outback to the halls of Paris in his quest to make his mark as a famous scientist. When his formula for splitting a beer atom puts him on the radar of fellow scientific rebel Marie Curie (Played by Odile Le Clezio), their budding romance puts Albert in the crosshairs of Preston Preston, a fellow intent on winning Marie's affections by stealing Albert brilliance. While the events are highly fabricated, the message of remaining true to who you are remains the central focus of Albert's story. Will Yahoo Serious's quirky and irreverent style still ring true with the nostalgia that Ray and Rob have for this movie? Tune in to find out! Puss in Boots: The Last Wish - Say Hello to My Little Film Ep. 306
Car RayRob is back with a brand-new episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! It's Ray's turn and he's bringing something we've never done on our flagship show, an animated feature! He's recommending to Rob the 2022 animated hit PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH! This third installment of the SHREK spinoff centers on the titular character, voiced as always by the great Antonio Banderas (DESPERADO, SPY KIDS), as he searches for the mythical "Last Wish" which he hopes to use to replenish his nine lives, which is has found himself at the end of. In his quest, he reunites with Kitty Softpaws (Voiced by Selma Hayek) and Perrito, marking the first franchise appearance of Harvey Guillen (WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, WEREWOLVES WITHIN). This trio must ward off other interested parties, as well as The Wolf, who is hellbent on ending Puss's final life. While Rob is very familiar with the Shrek franchise, these spinoffs have eluded him. However, Ray swears you can jump in on the third movie and not miss a beat! Sideways/Saidoweizu - A Copy of A Copy Ep. 203
Car RayRob are back with a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY! For this week's pair of films, Ray and Rob are tackling a new kind of remake they have yet to discuss, the American film remade for a foreign audience! They're doing this by revisiting Alexander Payne's 2004 Dramedy classic SIDEWAYS, as well as the 2009 Japanese language remake, SAIDOWEIZU! Both films center on a down on their luck writer who takes their quasi-famous actor best friend to California wine country for his bachelor party, and the shenanigans that ensue forces both men to reexamine their life choices and ultimately decide how they want to spend their rest of their lives. Each film picks a different area within California to focus their stories, and each one examines the complexity of failure and success in both life and love through their respective cultural lenses! We often see foreign films remade for American audiences, but the reverse is much less common. Tune in to find out how SAIDOWEIZU stacks up against the classic original! A Woman Under the Influence - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 305
It's a brand-new month which means a brand-new slate of episodes here at Car RayRob! For Rob's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, he's decided to bring his first challenge of the year by recommending to Ray the John Cassavetes classic A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE! This gem of art house filmmaking is one of Cassavetes numerous collaborations with real-life wife Gena Rowlands (OPENING NIGHT, THE NOTEBOOK), in a truly powerhouse performance. Rowlands stars as Mabel, a working-class mother whose mental health becomes questionable after a night out on her own after being stood up by her husband, Nick, played by Peter Falk (COLUMBO, WINGS OF DESIRE). While Cassavetes is widely held as one of Hollywood's great directors, he can be divisive among film viewers. His gritty, ultra-realistic style has been said to make his films a taxing experience on the audience. Because of this, there is no guarantee that Ray is going to like this film. Will Gena Rowland's performance for the ages hook Ray into her tale of woe? Or will Cassavetes almost cinema-verité style prove too much for Ray to handle? Tune in to find out! Doc Hollywood - Hello Movies, My Old Friend Ep. 202
The month of love is almost gone, but before it's over, we're back with a brand-new episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND where Ray and Rob are revisiting the 1991 romantic comedy DOC HOLLYWOOD! This Michael J. Fox (BACK TO THE FUTURE, LIFE WITH MIKEY) classic centers on Ben Stone, a hot shot DC doctor who is traveling cross country for a big-time job interview. On his journey, he accidentally destroys the fence of a local judge and in recompence he has to perform community service as the small town's doctor. With a laundry list of recognizable supporting performances including Julie Warner (MR. SATURDAY NIGHT, TOMMY BOY), David Ogden Stiers (M*A*S*H, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST), Bridget Fonda (SINGLES, JACKIE BROWN) and Woody Harrelson (WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP, NATURAL BORN KILLERS), DOC HOLLYWOOD stands as a great edition to an era in Michael J. Fox's career that is often criminally overlooked. Tune in to find out of this throwback stands the test of time and lives up to the nostalgic memories Ray and Rob have for it! Brian's Song - Say Hello to My Little Film Ep. 304
It's Ray's turn at the February fun and he's decided to go a slightly different direction. He's decided to highlight a film that centers on the love between two best friends. For this, he's recommending to Rob the 1971 Sport classic BRIAN'S SONG! This film centers on the real-life story of Brian Piccolo and Gayle Sayers, two Chicago Bear rookies who begin their relationship as rivals for the same spot on the team to becoming the best of friends. But when tragedy strikes, their friendship is put to the test as the strength it takes from both could be more than either can bear. Portrayed by James Caan (THE GODFATHER, THIEF) and Billy Dee Williams (STAR WARS, MAHOGANY) respectively, this sports classic is heralded as not only being one of the best of the genre but also is considered to be one of the greatest made-for-television movies ever made! Will this heart wrenching tale of friendship and adversity prove enough to capture Rob's admiration? Or will the made-for-television production leave him wanting more? Tune in this week to find out! Sabrina (1954/1995) - A Copy of A Copy Ep. 202
The month of love continues here at Car RayRob! For our brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY, Ray and Rob have decided to examine one the greatest romantic comedies of all time by watching Bill Wilder's indelible classic SABRINA, as well as the Sydney Pollock's 1995 remake! Both films center on Sabrina Fairchild (Played in the original by the legendary Audrey Hepburn), the daughter of a chauffeur for the Larrabee family, a wealthy industrialist magnate. Sabrina grows up with her eyes set on David, the shiftless playboy of the family who barely knows she exists, portrayed in Wilder's original by William Holden (STALAG 17, THE WILD BUNCH) and Greg Kinnear in Pollock's remake. When Sabrina leaves to spend time in Paris, she believes she is growing beyond David's spell. However, when David finds himself engaged for the benefit of the family's business, she once again is pulled into his orbit as her worldly transformation finally garners his affections. To head off his infatuation with Sabrina, the duty falls on his brother Linus, played by Humphrey Bogart in the original and Harrison Ford in the remake, to protect the family's interests and break up the shenanigans. The original holds a very special place in Rob's heart and with Ray's newfound love of both Billy Wilder and Humphrey Bogart, the remake has a tough road ahead. Valley Girl (1983) - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 303
It's once again the season of love here at Car RayRob! As usual, Rob is ready for the occasion. To ring in the season, he has decided to bring an heirloom film, one passed down from his big sister to him and now he is passing it along to brother from another mother, Ray! The 1983 Martha Coolidge directed teen comedy, VALLEY GIRL! This gem of 80's nostalgia is loosely based on the Shakespeare classic ROMEO AND JULIET and stars the bearer of the unbearable weight of massive talent, Nicolas Cage! He stars alongside Deborah Foreman (REAL GENIUS, WAXWORK) as Randy and Julie, two star crossed lovers from different cliques who decide to upend the apple cart of social hierarchy and begin a relationship, much the chagrin of her friends. All things seem heavenly until the peer pressure begins to build and Julie has to decide what's more important, Randy or their social differences? A movie that may be disregarded in the slew of imitations that followed, VALLEY GIRL not only helped solidify the conventions of the teen comedy but also helped launch a lexicon! I think it's fair to say we would not have classics like CLUELESS without VALLEY GIRL! So, grab your special someone, pop your popcorn, cuddle in close and bask in the glory of this romantic classic! Like, for sure! Will the chemistry between these two leads help overcome the trappings of the classic it's based on for Ray? Or will movies that came in its shadow overcome its charms leaving him wanting more? Tune in to find out! Days of Thunder - Hello Movies, My Old Friend Ep. 201
To round out our month of premieres, Ray and Rob are back with a brand-new season of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! They've decided to quench their need for speed by revisiting Tony Scott's 1990 racing drama DAYS OF THUNDER! This piece of sports nostalgia centers on Cole Trickle, a hot shot rookie who is entering the world of stock car racing by joining a new team put together by car dealership tycoon, Tim Daland. To lead this team, Tim brings on retired crew chief Harry Hodges who carries the death of his former driver close to his heart. When Cole's star begins to rise and is himself struck with tragedy, he has to overcome his fears to get back in the driver's seat and win the biggest race of his career. Perhaps most known for launching the real-life relationship of its co-stars Tom Cruise (TOP GUN, RISKY BUSINESS) and Nicole Kidman (TO DIE FOR, BIRTH), Days of Thunder is also the re-teaming of the crew behind one of the biggest hits of the 80s, TOP GUN! With a stellar supporting cast including Robert Duvall (APOLOCLYPSE NOW, THE GODFATHER), Michael Rooker (CLIFFHANGER, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Randy Quaid (NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION, THE LAST DETAIL), can this slice of 90's nostalgia live up to Ray and Rob's memories and kick this season off on the right foot? Fail Safe - Say Hello To My Little FIlm Ep. 302
It's Ray's turn to kick things off on Car RayRob's brand-new season of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! While Rob went big with an action spectacle, Ray is going in a different direction by recommending the 1964 Sidney Lumet (DOG DAY AFTERNOON, NETWORK) classic FAIL SAFE! This entry in the cannon of Cold War thrillers centers on a group of American politicians, bureaucrats and enlisted men who court disaster when a series of unfortunate mishaps during a military exercise sends a lone squadron of nuclear bombers fly to Russia with orders to bomb Moscow. With an all-star cast including Walter Matthau (THE ODD COUPLE, CHARLEY VERRICK), Henry Fonda (YOUNG MR LINCOLN, THE GRAPES OF WRATH) and Larry Hagman (I DREAM OF JEANIE, DALLAS), FAIL SAFE seeks to challenge the viewer with the face of our own militaristic, self-destructive nature and was an early prophet against our reliance on machines in warfare. FAIL SAFE opened to a poor box office reception, mainly due to the similar subject matter and release proximity to one of the greatest political dark comedies of all time, DR STRANGELOVE. Despite these challenges, FAIL SAFE has found a solid place in film history and Ray's heart! Will the similarities between FAIL SAFE and DR STRANGELOVE prove too much for Rob to enjoy it? Or will this taut thriller stand on its own two feet and differentiate itself? Tune in this week to find out! The Hunger Games/Battle Royale - A Copy of A Copy Ep. 201
A brand-new year is a upon which means Car RayRob is back with a fresh new season of A COPY OF A COPY! The podcast where Ray and Rob watch originals and remakes to analyze why they were made! For their season opener, they're swinging for the fences by trying to settle an age-old argument, is THE HUNGER GAMES really just a rip of BATTLE ROYALE?!? The Y/A juggernaut has wowed audiences the world over, but detractors continue to bash it in defense of the Japanese action spectacle. Both films center on a politically sanctioned game where teens are conscripted to fight to the death. In one, as a punishment for long ago fought revolution. The other, as a way to try to keep the kids in line as the country goes to hell. Is there really something to this? Should Suzanne Collins have been sued into oblivion for copyright infringement? John Wick - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 301
It's a brand-new year and a brand-new season here at SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! It's Rob episode and he's decided to go in a completely different direction than the way he started last season by going big and he means BIG! To accomplish this hefty goal, he has chosen a film that meets the moment and one that he was shocked to learn Ray had never seen, the 2014 Action film spectacle JOHN WICK! Starring the much-loved Keanu Reeves, this modern staple of the genre centers on John Wick, a retired hitman who not only loses his wife to illness, but also her final gift to him after her passing, his dog. This act of aggression not only sparks a revenge tour that has to be seen to be believed but threatens to pull him back into a life that John had long left behind. With supporting performances Alfie Allen (GAME OF THRONES, JOJO RABBIT), Ian McShane (DEADWOOD, SEXY BEAST) and the late Lance Reddick (THE WIRE, WHITE HOUSE DOWN), John Wick became an overnight sensation that sparked a franchise and became the pinnacle of the genre for a generation. It's time for Ray and Rob to wrap up their first season of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! To ring out the year, they have decided to embrace the winter cold by revisiting the 1999 sports comedy MYSTERY, ALASKA! This hockey classic revolves around a small Alaskan town and the myth surrounding a weekly hockey match called "The Saturday Game". When Sports Illustrated prints a story about this long-held tradition, written by a former townie, interest arises to pit Mystery's scrappy players against the New York Rangers. This opportunity sparks a firestorm within the town to prove to the world that they are just as good as any professional player on the ice. With starring performances by Russell Crowe (L.A. Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 224 - Gifted
The time has come for Ray to present his season finale recommendation on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! For this momentous occasion, Ray has chosen a movie that will tug on Rob's heartstrings by hitting close to home, the 2017 family drama GIFTED. Directed by Marc Webb (500 DAYS OF SUMMER, THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN), GIFTED follows the story of Mary (Played by the amazing McKenna Grace), a seven-year-old math savant who is being raised by her Uncle Frank after her mother's tragic suicide. When his estranged mother Evelyn, Mary's Grandmother, learns of her gifts, she decides that Frank is unfit to be Mary's guardian and seeks full custody of her. Buttressed by performances by Chris Evans (AVENGERS: ENDGAME, SNOWPIERCER), Jenny Slate (MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON, OBVIOUS CHILD) and Octavia Spencer (FRUITVALE STATION, HIDDEN FIGURES), GIFTED examines the difficulties of growing up a genius, from the social-emotional hurdles to the question of what you owe the world with your gifts. A Copy of A Copy: Episode 108 - Wings of Desire/City of Angels
It’s finally time for the season finale of A COPY OF A COPY! In this episode, Ray and Rob dive into the world of foreign-language-to-English remakes by comparing Wim Wenders’ 1987 German arthouse classic WINGS OF DESIRE with its Hollywood counterpart, CITY OF ANGELS, starring Nicolas Cage (MOONSTRUCK, RAISING ARIZONA) and Meg Ryan (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, FRENCH KISS). Both films follow an angel who, drawn to the pull of human life, falls in love with a woman and must decide whether to give up eternity for the challenges of being human. While WINGS OF DESIRE is set in Cold War-era Berlin, CITY OF ANGELS takes place in its namesake city of Los Angeles. Wender's original is a darling of arthouse cinema and captures the complex emotions of a country in perpetual turmoil. CITY OF ANGELS attempts to capture the narrative roots of the original but adds that flare of Hollywood filmmaking in the attempts to reach a wider audience. Does it succeed? Or is Wender's classic too much for it to handle? Tune in this week to find out! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 223 - The Apartment
The time has come for Rob’s final recommendation of the year on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, and he’s going out with his biggest swing yet by choosing one of his all-time favorites. To close things out, he’s presenting Ray with the 1960 romantic comedy THE APARTMENT! This Billy Wilder gem stars Jack Lemmon (SOME LIKE IT HOT, GRUMPY OLD MEN) as C.C. Baxter, an ambitious insurance clerk eager to climb the corporate ladder. To get ahead, he lets his bosses use his apartment for their extramarital affairs, much to his own inconvenience. Things take a turn when he falls for the charming and sought-after elevator operator Fran Kubelik, played with irresistible charm by Shirley MacLaine (TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, STEEL MAGNOLIAS). When Baxter discovers that his crush on Miss Kubelik is tangled up in his apartment troubles through his boss Jeff Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), he’s faced with his most complicated dilemma yet, one that makes him question what he truly wants in life. Rob thinks he’s saved the best for last, but it’s Ray who will have the final say! Will the hype Rob has been building over the last few weeks for this pick ruin Ray's viewing experience? Or will the undeniable chemistry of the performances and impeccable screenplay show him this is one of the greatest films ever made? Tune in this week to find out! Hello Movies, My Old Friend: Episode 114 - Who's Harry Crumb?
On this month's episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, Ray and Rob were forced to call an audible when their original selection, ONLY THE LONELY is not currently available digitally in the US! Since they wanted to stay with a John Candy movie, they have decided to pivot to 1989 detective comedy WHO'S HARRY CRUMB? This send up of the cop drama, John Candy plays Harry Crumb, the last in a long line of famous private detective who is brought in when the daughter of a millionaire is kidnapped from a day spa. When it becomes clear that he was only hired for his ineptitude to cover up an inside job, Harry has to hone his natural familial talent in the art of detection to thwart multiple parties in a game of cat and mouse that twists and turns until its surprising conclusion. Critically panned at the time, but coming at a cultural high point for John Candy, WHO'S HARRY CRUMB? was a favorite of both Ray and Rob but has since fallen to the annuls of time. Will the audible throw Ray and Rob for a loop and cast a dark cloud over this movie? Or will John Candy's magnetic comedy prove this to be a forgotten classic? Tune in this week to find out! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 222 - Harakiri
As we near the end of our second season at CAR RAYROB, it’s time for Ray’s penultimate pick on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! This time, Ray takes Rob back to feudal Japan with Masaki Kobayashi’s 1962 classic HARAKIRI. The story follows former ronin Tsugumo Hanshiro (played by the late Tatsuya Nakadai), who arrives at the Iyi clan’s gate requesting to perform the sacred act of seppuku in their courtyard. Initially met with suspicion and a tale of another ronin’s similar request that ended gruesomely, his unwavering resolve eventually convinces them to allow it. What follows is a tense psychological duel that unravels a truth far darker than expected. A sharp critique of the feudal system and the myth of the samurai, HARAKIRI challenges viewers to rethink the very meaning of honor. Will this classic of Japanese cinema prove a worthy viewing for Rob? Or will the bleak outlook on feudal Japan leave him outside of the city walls? Tune in this week to find out! A Copy of A Copy: Episode 107 - The Wizard of Oz/The Wiz
As the year winds down at Car RayRob, there are just two episodes left of A COPY OF A COPY! For the penultimate episode, and in honor of the upcoming release of WICKED FOR GOOD, Ray and Rob dive into the 1939 classic THE WIZARD OF OZ and the 1978 Motown musical THE WIZ. The world of Oz has inspired many interpretations over the decades, with the Judy Garland original being the gold standard for Oz fans. However, the 70s musical made its mark by blending magical fantasy with the modern Black experience in America, creating a unique mirror image film that deserves its own recognition. Both films follow Dorothy Gale, portrayed as a young farm girl from Kansas in the original and as a mid-20s schoolteacher in The Wiz. After being transported to the magical land of Oz, Dorothy must journey with her newfound companions to meet The Wizard in hopes of finding her way back home. The Warner Bros classic features unforgettable performances by Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, and Margaret Hamilton, while the Motown musical shines with standout performances by Michael Jackson (his only feature film role), Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, and the iconic Richard Pryor. Tune in with Ray and Rob as they delve into the themes of these films and explore how representation shaped this COPY OF A COPY! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 221 - McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Rob is down to his final two recommendations for the year on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! He’s wrapping things up with a one-two punch, starting with one of his favorite films by his favorite director, Robert Altman’s 1971 revisionist western MCCABE & MRS. MILLER! This New Hollywood twist on the classic genre stars Warren Beatty (DICK TRACY, BONNIE & CLYDE) as John McCabe, a wandering gambler who sets up a makeshift brothel in the small boomtown of Presbyterian Church. His business catches the eye of Constance Miller (played brilliantly by Julie Christie), a professional madame who pushes her way into a partnership that boosts the operation. But when the region’s largest mining company sets its sights on McCabe’s holdings and the town itself, his business skills are put to the ultimate test. This landmark of the New Hollywood era showcases Altman at his finest, working with top-tier actors and crafting sepia-toned, textured visuals with the legendary cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, cementing its place as a pinnacle of 70s cinema. Will MCCABE & MRS. MILLER be an easy win for Ray? Or will its reputation as an “anti-western” challenge his growing love for the genre? Find out this week! Hello Movies, My Old Friend: Episode 113 - Spawn
For October's episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND Ray and Rob are revisiting one of the most infamous flops of the last 30 years, the 1997 Superhero film SPAWN! This adaptation of the Todd McFarlane comic series centers on Al Simmons (played by Micheal Jai White), a mercenary for hire who sells his allegiance to the devil after he dies in a double-cross on a mission in Asia. John Lequizamo (MOULIN ROUGE!, JOHN WICK) delivers a memorable performance as The Violator, a demon charged with recruiting Al, as well as set up the dominoes to bring on the war to end the world. With supporting performances by D.B Sweeney (THE CUTTING EDGE, EIGHT MEN OUT) and Golden Globe Winner Martin Sheen (THE DEPARTED, THE WEST WING) SPAWN was a film of the moment, and one that begs to be re-evaluated! Will the aged effects and the lackluster adaptation prove to truly be a let down? Or will SPAWN show to be a diamond in the rough that deserves more respect? Tune in this week to find out! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 220 - Where Eagles Dare
In pure Ray fashion, he has decided to NOT choose a Halloween themed film for his episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM. Instead, he has decided to take Rob back to the 1960s, with the war/spy thriller WHERE EAGLES DARE! Some might call this a Clint Eastwood film, but the day belongs to Richard Burton as Major John Smith, the leader of a group of highly trained British spies who are tasked to drop in behind Nazi lines to save Brigadier General George Carnaby, a chief planner for the Western front. But when members of the team start turning up dead, Major Smith and his American counterpart Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood) must power through to complete the mission and uncover a truth that shocks the viewer to their core! Anchored by an second half action sequence whose fingerprints can be seen on many a modern action film, WHERE EAGLES DARE marks a shift in the war genre as the studio system gave way to New Hollywood. Will the diversion of the holiday theme throw Rob for a loop? Or will the twists and turns of this spy classic be enough to lure him in? Tune in this week to find out! A Copy of A Copy: Episode 106 - Nosferatu ('22/'79/'24)
The Halloween season zombie shuffles on here at CAR RAYROB! For this month's spooky installment of A COPY OF A COPY, Ray and Rob has decided to bite off more than they can chew by doing their first ever A Copy of A Copy of A Copy by looking at three horror classics! The first is F.W. Murnau's silent German horror classic NOSFERATU! To buttress this pop culture staple, they will be comparing it to two of its homage sequels, the 1979 NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE directed by fellow German filmmaking giant Werner Herzog and 2024's NOSFERATU directed by modern horror darling Robert Eggers! All three follow the journey of the young real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Jonathan Harker in Herzog's film) as he travels to the Carpathian Mountains to meet with the elusive Count Orlok who is interested in purchasing a home in Hutter's hometown of Wisburg and the fallout that consumes the city, as well as Thomas's new wife Ellen (Lucy in Herzog's film). However, each film brings its own flavor to the story and expands on different elements of the central story. Loyal listeners know that horror is not Ray's bag, so Rob has done the unthinkable by convincing him to watch three in a row! Join us to find out how these films stack up to one another and hear if Ray actually enjoyed the experience! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 219 - The Deeper You Dig
It's the spooky season here at SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! To kick things off, Rob has decided to push Ray into an arena he's not entirely comfortable in with the 2019 horror, ghost story THE DEEPER YOU DIG! Written, directed and starring the horror genre sensations, The Adams Family (HELLBENDER, THE HATRED)! THE DEEPER YOU DIG centers on Ivy and Echo (played by real life mother and daughter Toby Poser and Zelda Adams) who reside in rural upstate New York. Ivy is a tarot reader who has lost her sight and when Echo is tragically, and secretly, killed by their new neighbor, Kurt (John Adams), Ivy begins a quest to discover her daughter's fate as Echo takes revenge on the guilt-ridden mind of her killer. This low budget gem is a representation of the crafty storytelling genius of this resourceful family and a perfect entry point for Ray into the twisted world! Will Ray's reticence towards the horror genre prevent him from appreciating the what the Adam's Family was able to accomplish? Or will their uncanny ability to craft atmosphere lure him into their mesmerizing spell? Tune in this week to find out! Say Hello to My Little Film: Kid's Special! - Dumb and Dumber (Feat. Mr Kitty Kaiju)
As we roll into Fall, we once again find ourselves with a five Monday month, which means it's time for a special Kid's Edition of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! Mr. Kitty Kaiju is back as Ray and Rob recommend one of their all-time favorite comedies from their childhood, the 1994 comedy classic DUMB AND DUMBER! This rite of passage film stars Jim Carrey (THE MASK, ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE) and Jeff Daniels (SPEED, THE NEWSROOM) as Lloyd and Harry, two down on their luck losers who accidentally take possession of a briefcase full of ransom money for a rich socialite's (played by Lauren Holly) husband. When they decide to cross the country in an attempt to return it, they find themselves in an ever-escalating endurance test of stupidity in the hopes of finally finding the life they so desperately want but are too stupid to find. With supporting performances by Charles Rocket and the late Teri Garr, Dumb and Dumber helped cement The Farrelly Brothers as comedy staples and ushered in one of the most quotable films to ever exist. Will the instantly recognizable pop culture comedy of Dumb and Dumber capture Mr Kitty Kaiju's heart the way it did his Dad? Or will the generational divide keep him from fully enjoying this classic? Hello Movies, My Old Friend: Episode 112 - Toy Soldiers
September is going fast, so it's time for a new episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! For today's episode, Ray and Rob revisit the 1991 action thriller TOY SOLDIERS! This coming-of-age classic stars the great Sean Astin (LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, THE GOONIES) and Wil Wheaton (STAND BY ME, STAR TREK: TNG). TOY SOLDIERS follows a group of rejects at a prestigious private school who must save their school from a band of terrorists who seek to force the release of their leader's father from an American prison. With a stellar supporting cast that includes Keith Coogan (ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING, DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD) and Louis Gossett Jr (ENEMY MINE, THE COLOR PURPLE), TOY SOLDIERS explores the idea of brotherhood and the lengths you'll go to protect them. Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 218 - The Big Sick
For Ray's September Episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, he's trying to break up his streak of heavy subject matters by recommending the 2017 comedy THE BIG SICK. It centers on Kumail, a struggling comedian who is caught in the maelstrom of the Pakistani tradition of arranged marriage by his overbearing family. When he meets Emily, an American woman, she steals his heart but puts him in a very precarious familial situation, one that threatens to end his relationship with Emily for good. When a mysterious illness puts Emily in a coma, Kumail must decide what is truly important to him and how he wants to ultimately live his life. With stellar supporing performances by Holly Hunter (RAISING ARIZONA, HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS), Ray Romano (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND) and Zoe Kazan (RUBY SPARKS, WHAT IF) and based on the semi-autobiographical tale of actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his real-life wife Emily, THE BIG SICK is a singular romantic comedy cut from its own cloth. Will this ray of funny sunshine melt Rob's heart? Or will the chances it takes to subvert the rom-com structure leave him feeling blue? Tune in this week to find out! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 217 - Five Easy Pieces
Car RayRob is kicking off the month of September with a brand-new episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! It's Rob's pick and he's bringing another one of his personal favorites, the 1970 drama FIVE EASY PIECES! This true American classic stars a Jack Nicholson (CHINATOWN, THE SHINING) in the iconic role of Bobby Dupea, an oil worker with a privileged past that he must confront when he learns his father has suffered multiple strokes and his days are numbered. Accompanied on his journey by his eccentric girlfriend Rayette (played by the powerhouse of 70s cinema Karen Black), Bobby searches for who he is and what he truly wants from life. Born from one of the great New Hollywood production companies, BBS Productions, FIVE EASY PIECES is the great American film that embodies the changing landscape of counterculture America and the evolving face of the Hollywood industry. Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 216 - The Stanford Prison Experiment
For Ray's September SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM selection, he has decided to do a sequel, not of a film he's already shown but of a conversation he and Rob began last month with THE LORD OF THE FLIES. To fulfill this, he has chosen the 2015 drama THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT. This tale of a real-life experiment conducted on the Standford University campus in 1971 centers on a group of students who agree to participate by being divided into prisoners and guards to see how each side would react. As with LORD OF THE FLIES, the darker sides of humanity bubble to the surface as the effects of power lead to torment for the unfortunate students relegated to be prisoners. Featuring stellar performances by Billy Crudup (WATCHMAN, BIG FISH, ALMOST FAMOUS), Tye Sharidan (MUD, READY PLAYER ONE), Ezra Miller (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, THE FLASH) and many others, THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT is a chilling study of people and the abuse of power that possibly lays dormant within us all. Will the similar themes of Ray's previous recommendation once again leave Rob cold? Or will the stellar cast and true-life events draw him in an keep him prisoner? Tune in this week to find out! A Copy of A Copy: Episode 104 - Aladdin (1992/2019)
It's fair to say that for Ray and Rob, the 1990s were the golden age of Disney animation. The run of hits holds a special nostalgic place in both of their hearts. At the top of that mountain sits ALADDIN, the story the young street urchin who with the help of magical genie, wins the heart of the princess Jasmine and defeats the evil Jafar. Over the last decade, Disney has seen fit to once again repackage these classics in live action versions in an attempt to bank on that nostalgia and line their pockets in the process. Because of this phenomenon, Ray and Rob decided to look at the original ALADDIN and it's 2019 counterpart to decide, is this really just a cash grab? Or is there more than meets the eye? Join Ray and Rob as they breakdown both of these Disney films and take a look at the trend overall! Will the original stand supreme? Say Hello to My Little Films: Episode 215 - Barton Fink
Rob is kicking off August's SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM by recommending a film to Ray that holds a special place in his heart, the 1991 Coen Brothers classic BARTON FINK! Starring John Turturro (THE BIG LEBOWSKI, O' BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?) and John Goodman (RAISING ARIZONA, THE BIG LEBOWSKI), BARTON FINK centers on a rising star playwright of the same name as he takes a job in 1940s Hollywood to pen a wrestling picture for a mid-level studio. After relocating to a crumbling hotel with distracting neighbors and peeling wallpaper, Barton finds himself with a debilitating case of writer's block. As he tries desperately to overcome it, he encounters a cadre of zany characters that only seem to add to his predicament. BARTON FINK comes from the early period of the Coen's filmography (pre iconic films like FARGO and THE BIG LEBOWSKI), it is an often overlooked classic written by writers who either love writers or hates them! (You decide!) Will the early style of Coen's not ring as true with Ray as their later more well known films? Or will Barton's journey of creative discovery lure Ray into it's hypnotic allure? Hello Movies, My Old Friend: Episode 110 - Burglar
Ray and Rob are currently on a bit of a cold streak here on HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, so they're hoping to break the trend by revisiting a long-lost classic from their collective childhoods, the 1987 heist comedy BURGLAR! This Whoopi Goldberg (THE COLOR PURPLE, GHOST) led comedy centers on Bernie Rhodenbarr, an ex-con burglar who is being blackmailed by dirty cop Ray Kirschman to continue her life of crime to his benefit. When her latest heist turns sideways and her mark ends up dead, she finds herself in the crosshairs of the police and at the center of a conspiracy that could lead Bernie to a grave of her own. With supporting performances by Bobcat Goldthwait (POLICE ACADEMY, WORLD'S GREATEST DAD), John Goodman (BARTON FINK, RAISING ARIZONA) and Lesley Ann Warren (CLUE, LIFE STINKS), BURGLAR finds Whoopi on the upswing of her career that would solidify her as one of the comedy's greats! Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 214 - Lord of the Flies (1990)
On this week's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Ray takes Rob back to high school by recommending the 1990s screen adaptation LORD OF THE FLIES! This film based on the 1954 book by Sir William Golding stars a young Balthazar Getty as Ralph, the natural leader of a band of military students who find themselves stranded on a remote island after a savage plane crash. With no hope in sight, the group take to setting up their society which quickly becomes treacherous as factions break off and tensions begin to rise. With supporting performances by Chris Furrh (EXILE, A FAMILY FOR JOE), Danuel Pipoly (THE TORKELSONS, THE GIANT OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN and a debut performance by JAMES BADGE DALE (THE DEPARTED, IRON MAN 3), this slice of classic literature dissects how long society can stand when all rules seem to fade away. A Copy of A Copy: Episode 103 - Casablanca/Barb Wire
It's time again for a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY! This week, Ray and Rob are examining what they're calling the "stealth remake" in which a movie is an obvious remake of an older movie but is not explicitly marketed as such. For this version of the remake, they're watching one of Rob's favorite film, CASABLANCA starring the acting giants Humphrey Bogart (HIGH SIERRA, IN A LONELY PLACE) and Ingrid Bergman (NOTORIOUS, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS) and the cult dystopian action film, BARB WIRE. This Pamela Anderson (BAYWATCH, THE LAST SHOWGIRL) vehicle was a critical and box office failure but has found an audience in the proceeding decades. Did the makers of Barb Wire hide the fact it's a remake to avoid the comparison to one of Hollywood's greatest triumphs? Or was it to allow BARB WIRE the chance to soar on its own merits? Say Hello to My Little Film: Episode 213 - Videodrome
It's time to say Happy Birthday to Rob here on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! To celebrate, he's taking part in his new annual tradition to commemorate the day of his birth, messing with Ray! Rob has chosen a very special film this month, not in the hopes of Ray hating it, but to push him to the boundaries of his film milieu. He has picked the David Cronenberg's 1983 body horror classic VIDEODROME! In this subversive classic, James Woods plays Max Renn, the president of CIVIC-TV, a Canadian UHF television station known for pushing the boundaries of taste and civility. When Max is exposed to a new underground pirate broadcast centered on realistic torture and murder scenes with no discernable plot, he becomes enamored with who creates it, where it's made and how he can get his hands on it. As Max goes deeper and deeper down the Videodrome rabbit hole, he begins to notice changes in his perception that forces him to question his own reality and puts him on a collision course with a force beyond his understanding. With stellar supporting performances by Debbie Harry (HAIRSPRAY, FOREVER, LULU) and Peter Dvorsky (THE DEAD ZONE, TWINS), Videodrome shows David Cronenberg at the height of prescience of world we may have unknowingly found ourselves living in. Will the unbounded creativity of one of the masters of body horror prove too much for Ray? Or will the underlying warning force Ray to listen and not look away? Tune in this week to find out! This staple of 80s childhoods everywhere centers on Alex Rogan, your typical teenager who dreams of escaping his humdrum life with his girlfriend, Maggie. Hello Movies, My Old Friend: Episode 109 - Ladybugs
It's another fun trip down nostalgia lane with CAR RAYROB, but on this episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, Ray and Rob look at what they've been told is the most pressing issue in modern American life, boy is girls sports! To aide their dissection, they are going to revisit the 1992 sports comedy LADYBUGS. It stars the late/great Rodney Dangerfield (BACK TO SCHOOL, CADDYSHACK) as Chester Lee, a hardworking salesman who is desperate to impress his boss and land the big promotion. When he's offered the opportunity to coach the company's girls soccer team (a sport he knows nothing about), he enlists the help of his fiancée's son Matthew to help him put together a winning season. Co-starring Jonathan Brandis (SEAQUEST DSV, THE NEVERENDING STORY II) and Vinessa Shaw (HOCUS POCUS, 3:10 TO YUMA), LADYBUGS tackles the notion of winning at all costs and finding your self-confidence in the face of perilous odds. Join Ray and Rob as they not only dissect this movie, but the way modern society can use pop culture to weaponize concepts beyond rationale understanding. It's Ray's episode this week and he recently realized he'd been bringing the heavy for the last few months. So, he decided to lighten things up with the buddy road trip dramedy A WALK IN THE WOODS! A Copy of A Copy: Episode 102 - Hairspray (1988/2007)
Car RayRob is back with another episode of their brand-new podcast A COPY OF A COPY! The first went so well, we've decided to keep it going! For this episode, Ray and Rob are looking at another way remakes are being made these days and that's the musical! More and more traditional features are being reimagined in the Broadway style, so to explore this growing phenomenon, Ray and Rob have zeroed in the John Waters classic HAIRSPRAY! Ray has a checkered past with the Pope of Trash, but the success of both the original and the musical beg for the Car RayRob magnifying glass! In both, the story centers on Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake in 88 and Nikki Blonsky in 2007), a Baltimore teen who dreams of being on the local dance sensation The Corny Collins Show! Not fitting the traditional mold of beauty, Tracy faces strong headwinds in the form of Amber, the queen bee of the dance floor and her cadre of "cool kids" who rule the show and look down on outsiders. When she shoots for the moon much to the chagrin of her mother Edna (Divine in 1988 and John Travolta in 2007), she finds surprise allies and the push towards the fight for racial equality in 1960s America. Does the distinct John Waters flair translate well to the Broadway stage? Or does the style leave it feeling overproduced and lifeless? Tune in this week to find out!
