Ep 059: Iowa vs Missouri Football History (1892-2020)
In this podcast, Brion recaps the history of football between Iowa and Missouri, on the eve of the 2024 Music City Bowl. Due to poor sportsmanship and racial conflict, the series took a hiatus of 100 years from 1910-2010. Missouri leads the series 7-6. Note: this podcast was recorded before the game. Ep 053: Tyler Devine discusses his interview with Dan Gable, Tom Brands discusses coaching with Dan Gable
In this podcast, I share another section of the interview I had with Hawkfanatic's Tyler Devine of The Devine Line from back in February 2021. In the last podcast, we discussed Hawkeye history, but in this podcast, Tyler shares a great story about the time he interviewed Dan Gable for an article he wrote in high school. I also found an interview with Tom Brands a few years ago with Flo Wrestling, where he talks about what it was like to be an assistant coach under Dan Gable. You can find the entire interview between Tyler Devine and I at: https://hawkfanatic.com/2021/02/06/the-devine-line-ep-17-brion-hurley/ The interview with Tom Brands and Flo Wrestling can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyc8MorCAN0 Links from the podcast: Original podcast episode on The Devine Line: https://hawkfanatic.com/2021/02/06/the-devine-line-ep-17-brion-hurley/ Tom Brands video interview with Flo Wrestling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyc8MorCAN0 Intro music is "Roll Along Iowa" and the outro music is "Hawkeye Victory Polka" (aka "In heaven there is no beer!") Ep 043: Player Profiles for Jerry Hilgenberg and Butch Caldwell
In this week's podcast, I spotlight 2 player profiles The first one is Jerry Hilgenberg, who walked-on at Iowa in the early 1950's and had two sons that played at Iowa and in the NFL (Jay and Joel). Sadly he passed away last week. With the news yesterday of Kadyn Proctor joining the Hawks, I also profile a big-time football recruit back in 1972, Butch Caldwell. He also had all the big schools after him, as he was a dual-threat QB that was desperately needed after Iowa's 1-10 season in 1971. He helped lead the Hawks to a huge upset at #11 Penn State in 1976. Ep 041: Citrus Bowl Perspective from the Press Box and Largest Bowl Game Margins
I share my perspectives of getting a press credential to cover the 2024 Citrus Bowl from the press box for the first time. I go through the process and timeline of a day in the life of an Iowa media reporter. I read the article I wrote on HawkFanatic.com after the game. The Citrus Bowl loss was the worst margin of defeat in a bowl game in Iowa football history, surpassing the 37-3 loss in the 1993 Alamo Bowl. I also go through the past bowl games with a 20 point or more margin of victory or defeat. Ep 040: Tennessee Football History (1982-2015)
This podcast was recorded at the end of last year, but I'm just now posting it. The Citrus Bowl did not go well, with the Hawks losing badly 35-0 to Tennessee. That makes Iowa 1-3 all-time against the Volunteers. In this podcast, I recapped Iowa's 3 previous games against Tennessee in football. The 1982 Peach Bowl win, the 1987 Kickoff Classic loss, and the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl blowout loss. I also includes some TV broadcast highlights from the Peach Bowl. Ep 037: UMBC MBB History, WBB hosted 1st B1G Tournament and Who is Lucky Krieger?
With a light basketball schedule this week, I decided to go through a variety of Iowa history in this podcast. First, I looked at Iowa's 2-game history against upcoming opponent, Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), and recap the 1990 and 2014 games. Next, I researched how Iowa women's basketball team hosted the inaugural Big Ten tournament in December of 1974 for 5 of the 8 teams that had women's basketball programs at the time. I also explain how Jess Settles, George Kittle and Henry Krieger Coble are connected through their grandmother, Lucky Krieger, and why she and her husband Bud should be in the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame. Ep 036: Iowa Men's Basketball History Against #1 Ranked Teams (1953-2023)
Iowa was going to face #1 Purdue last week, but they fell from the top ranking with their loss at Northwestern. Despite that, I wanted to recap the past men's basketball games against #1 ranked teams. Iowa is 3-23 all-time (11.5% win rate), with the 3 wins coming in 1965 vs UCLA (played in Chicago), 1999 against UConn in Steve Alford's first game as coach, and in 2015 against Michigan State at home. One of the most painful losses is the 1987 Elite Eight game against UNLV when Iowa was winning big at halftime, but couldn't hold off the Rebels. Ep 035: Recap of Iowa vs Iowa State Basketball history and arenas 1910-1935
One of this week's opponent in basketball is Iowa State, so I summarized the games played from 1910 through 1935. Iowa is 48-28 (63% win) all-time. Fran McCaffery is 6-7 (46%) all-time vs the Cyclones. For comparison, Tom Davis was 8-5 (61.5%) all-time. The first game wasn't played until 1910. They played frequently (sometimes twice a year) through 1921, then restarted in 1933. They played again in 1935, then took a 35-year gap between games. They restarted the series in 1970, and have played almost every year since then. Iowa won the first 12 games, then Iowa State won in 1917, but Iowa won 7 more straight. The series became more competitive after the initial Iowa dominance. No team had won more than 3 straight except for Lute Olson winning 5 straight from 1978-1983. I also discussed the different venues where they played in Iowa City and Ames. Iowa State played at Margaret Hall Gymnasium from 1907-1913, State gymnasium from 1913-1946, the Iowa State Armory from 1946 to 1971, then Hilton Coliseum starting in December 1971. Iowa played in the Old Armory (Armory #1) from 1905 to 1922, where the current Communications Building resides near the Old Capitol. They moved to another Armory (#2) from 1922 to 1926 while the Field House was being built. It was located just west of the Field House in the current UI Hospital near Kinnick Stadium. They moved into the Field House in 1927 and stayed until Jan 1983 when Carver-Hawkeye Arena opened. Ep 034: Player Profile for Adam Haluska and Coach Profile for Dan Gable
With the upcoming Iowa State basketball game on Dec 7th, I thought I'd share profiles from those with connections to Iowa State. Adam Haluska started his basketball career at Iowa State before transferring to play at Iowa for his final 3 seasons. He earned 1st Team All-Big Ten in 2007, and was an academic All-American. He was drafted in the 2nd round by the Charlotte Hornets in 2007. Dan Gable needs no introduction. He was a national champion wrestler at Iowa State, and won a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics. He took over as head coach at Iowa in 1976, and won 15 national titles and 21 Big Ten Champions before retiring in 1997. Ep 033: Player Profiles for Rob Houghtlin and Keith Duncan
With this week's game-winning FG over Nebraska, I thought I'd highlight two Iowa kickers with game-winning FGs over Michigan. Rob Houghtlin's 29-yard FG is simply known as "the kick" in #1 Iowa's 12-10 win over #2 Michigan. Keith Duncan's 33-yard FG against #2 Michigan in 2016 sealed a huge upset, given the trajectory of both teams coming into that matchup. Ep 032: Quick Recap of Iowa vs Michigan Football history 1900-2022
This week's opponent in the Big Ten Championship game is Michigan, so I summarized the games played from 1900 through 2022. We don't go into too much detail on each of the 63 games. Iowa is 15-44-4 all-time (27%). Hayden Fry was 4-11-1 all time (28%), with big wins in 1981, 1984, 1985, and 1990. Kirk Ferentz is 7-8 (47%), but lost 42-3 two years ago to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship. He won 3 in a row from 2009 to 2011. For blowout games in the series, Michigan crushed Iowa 107-0 in 1902, and also won 50-0 in 1901, 51-6 in 1969, 55-0 in 1970 and 63-7 in 1971. Iowa won 26-0 in 1984 and 34-9 in 2002. Former Iowa head coach Forest Evashevski was a QB for Michigan from 1938 to 1940, and was on the 1939 team that beat Iowa and Nile Kinnick 27-7, handing them their only loss of the season. Ep 031: Recap of Iowa vs Oklahoma Basketball 1951-1987
In this podcast, I reviewed the history of Iowa vs Oklahoma basketball, as they are scheduled to play this week. Iowa is 3-2 all-time against Oklahoma (60%). The games were played in 1951 and 52, 1958 and 59 and the big one, the Sweet Sixteen matchup that Iowa won on a last-second shot in 1987. Ep 030: Recap of Iowa vs Nebraska Football history 1891-1919
In this podcast, we look at this week's opponent Nebraska and the games played from 1891 through 1919. There have been 53 football games played against Nebraska, and Iowa is 20-30-3 all-time (40%). Fry was 1-3 all time (25%), with the only win in 1981, and losses in 1979, 1980 and 1982. Ferentz is 8-6 (57%), but lost the first 4 (99, 2000, then 2011 and 2012). He won 8 of the next 10, including 7 in a row from 2015 to 2021. In 1896, they played twice due to controversy over how the first game ended. From 1903 to 1917, Nebraska was 8-0-1. From 1931 to 1941, they also won 8 straight. There was a big gap between games. They didn't play from 1920 through 1929, then another gap from 1947 to 1978, then again from 1983 to 1998. A few interesting stories to listen for. The Cornhusker nickname was created after a win over Iowa in 1894. Fans got onto the field in 1896 to stop Iowa from scoring a TD, so the game had to be replayed 2 days later, and Frank Kinney Holbrook scored the winning TD to give Iowa the conference title. One game was impacted by pollution from the UI Power Plant fumes over Iowa Field, and another game was played during the Spanish Flu outbreak. Ep 029: Player Profiles for Nick Bell and Bret Bielema
Player profiles this week are Nick Bell, former NFL running back, who was a key part of the 1990 Rose Bowl team, and had a monster game against Illinois in 1990, and Bret Bielema, former Iowa walk-on and team captain during that same time, who is now the head coach at Illinois. Ep 028: Illinois Football - Recap of Iowa vs Illinois history 1899-1936
This week's opponent is Illinois, so we recap the games played from 1899 through 1936. There have been 78 games played between the two teams, and Iowa is 37-39-2 all-time (49%). Two more wins by Iowa will tie the series. This matchup has been fairly competitive throughout the years. Illinois won 12 straight games from 1942 thru 1967, but it included a gap between 1952 to 1967 when they didn't play. From 1990-92, Iowa won 3 straight, then from 1993-95, Illinois won 3 straight, then Iowa won 3 straight from 1996-1998. Hayden Fry was 10-8 (56%), including the final 3 matchups (1996-1998). Kirk Ferentz is 13-4 (76%), winning 8 straight until last year's 6-9 loss in 2022. A few interesting stories to listen for. An Iowa coach killed a rabbit to try and end a curse, Iowa fans came to Iowa Field to hear a telegram update on a big road game at Champaign, one game was so popular that ticket prices jumped from $3 to $10, and there were some really bad lopsided games early in the series by both teams. Ep 027: Iowa Basketball Exhibition Game History with USSR (1978-1986)
I decided to dig into Iowa men's basketball exhibition game history against USSR. There were 4 games played in 1978, 1979, 1982 and 1986. USSR won 3 times, and Iowa one only once (the first game in 1978). I recap all 4 games and explain some of the history of this series. There are also some cool video clips in the article you can check out. Ep 024: Northwestern Football - Recap of Iowa vs Northwestern history 1897-1939
We look at this week's opponent Northwestern and the games played from 1897 through the Nile Kinnick era ending in 1939. There have been 79 games played between the two teams, and Iowa is 53-28-3 (65%) all-time. To my surprise, the series has been fairly competitive except for a long stretch of 21 straight wins by Iowa from 1974 through 1994. Hayden Fry lost only 3 times to the Wildcats (1995-1997), but did beat them for his final victory as Iowa coach in 1998. He was 17-3 (85%). Overall, Ferentz is 11-11 (50%) against the Wildcats. However, there have been many Iowa blowouts in the series. 78-6 in 1913 68-34 in 1968 58-6 in 1979 64-0 in 1981 61-21 in 1983 52-24 in 1987 56-14 in 1990 56-14 in 1992 59-16 in 2001 62-10 in 2002 48-7 in 2014 Northwestern Football Games vs Iowa: https://hawkeyerecap.com/home.asp?sport=Football&opp=Northwestern Dennis Green Player Profile: https://hawkeyerecap.com/player.asp?id=146 Dennis Green Podcast Episode #3: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hawkeye-recap/episodes/Ep-003-Player-spotlight-on-Dennis-Green-1967-1970-Iowa-RB--Super-Bowl-winner--Northwestern-Head-Coach--NFL-Coach-e27osiq Intro music is "Roll Along Iowa" and the outro music is "Hawkeye Victory Polka" (aka "In heaven there is no beer!") Ep 023: Hayden Fry Famous Quotes and Odessa High Playing Days
For Iowa Football's bye week, instead of reviewing history on an upcoming opponent, I decided to spotlight legendary coach Hayden Fry. First, I look at Hayden's high school playing days as quarterback at Odessa High, leading them to their first and only state championship. Next, I read through Hayden's coaching profile page, where he recaps his career at Iowa, share videos and article links about his career, and reads off some of his most famous quotes. I think you'll really enjoy hearing this episode, and I think you'll learn something new about Coach Fry. Ep 021: Minnesota Football - Recap of Iowa vs Minnesota history 1891-1923
We look at week 8 opponent Minnesota and the games played from 1891 through the Howard Jones coaching era ending in 1923. There are over 100 games played between the two teams (the most against any opponent), and Iowa is 52-62-2 (45.7%) all-time. The Hawks lost the first 12 games in the series, then Iowa won 5 straight. Minnesota won 8 straight from 1931 to 1938, losing to Nile Kinnick's 1939 team. Within that winning streak was the 1934 game with Ozzie Simmons, which led to the Floyd of Rosedale trophy game in 1935. Iowa won 5 straight from 1955-1959 (which included 2 Iowa Rose Bowl teams), but lost in one of the biggest matchups between the two schools in 1960, when #1 Iowa lost to #3 Minnesota. Minnesota was 13-2-1 from 1960 through 1975. Hayden Fry lost the first 3 times against the Gophers (1979-1981), finally beating them in 1982. He ended up 12-8 (60%) against the Gophers. Kirk Ferentz lost in 1999, but he hasn't lost at home to Minnesota since that game. He also lost in 2000, but won in 2001 through 2005. Currently, Iowa has an 8-game winning streak since 2015. Overall, Ferentz is 18-6 (75%) against the Gophers. Ep 020: Wisconsin Football - Recap of Iowa vs Wisconsin history 1894-1939
We take a look at week 7 opponent Wisconsin and the games played from 1894 until the Nile Kinnick days through 1939. There are almost 100 games played between the two teams, and Iowa is 45-49-2 all-time. The Hawks lost the first 6 games in the series, including the famous "rabbit game" of 1907. That game also has a game program you can download. There is also a series of goal post teardowns in 1928 and 1929 that lead to near brawls, which reminded me of the 2002 Minnesota game in the Metrodome, so listen for that in the podcast, and check out the articles to read more. Iowa had its own winning streak from 1977 to 1996, when the Hawks were 17-0-1 (tied in 1984), but fortunately Iowa didn't play two Wisconsin Rose Bowl teams in 1993 and 1994. I'll highlight the other games after 1939 in a future podcast. Ep 019: Purdue Football - Recap of Iowa vs Purdue history 1910-1939
Sorry for the delay, I meant to publish this before Iowa's 20-14 win over Purdue on Saturday. In this podcast, I review the week 6 opponent Purdue and the games played from 1910 until the Nile Kinnick days in 1939. There are almost 100 games played between the two teams, and Iowa is 40-50-3 all-time. I did forgot to mention 3 early games in the history, each with Daily Iowan article links but no game summaries: 1911: 11-0 win at home 1915: 19-13 loss on the road 1916: 24-6 win at home under coach Howard Jones The Hawks lost 20 straight games from 1961 to 1980, and Iowa won 9 straight from 1983-1991. I'll highlight the other games in a future podcast. Intro music is "Roll Along Iowa" and the outro music is "Hawkeye Victory Polka" (aka "In heaven there is no beer!")
