Songs That Inspire Us
Music can be a wonderful source of entertainment for most people. However, it can also be much more than that. It can often lift us up when we need, or simply just want, a little something ‘extra’ in our days. In this episode of the Pop and Prose podcast, I was joined by my friend, writer Roland Denzel, and we talked about music that inspires each of us. Among the music we discussed are songs by artists such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Electric Light Orchestra, Rocky Balboa (well, sort of), Lyle Lovett, Billy Ocean, and several others.I had a lot of fun chatting with Roland about these great songs. If you’re a music lover, you may enjoy our conversation too - so please join us!To learn more about Roland Denzel, including information about his books, please visit his great website here. You can also find him on Instagram and Facebook. To connect elsewhere with me, Buddy Gott, I spend most of my online time posting about music and other things on Bluesky. I can also be found on Instagram, Threads, YouTube, and my website. Links to all of them (plus a few other places) can be found here via my Linktree. P.S. - If you’d like to check out some of the music that Roland and I talked about during this episode, each of us made public playlists that are available on Spotify. Buddy’s ‘Inspirational Mixtape’ can be found here and you can find Roland’s excellent playlist right here. Thank you very much for listening to or watching the show. The Bee Gees & Barney Miller (with Kerry Purvis)
In this episode, I'm joined by writer and podcaster Kerry Purvis. Our topics were the legendary band The Bee Gees and the classic television series 'Barney Miller.' For The Bee Gees segment, we took a look at their amazingly long and impressive career and discussed how each of us loves a lot of the group's great lesser-known music , such as their final two studio albums: 'Still Waters' from 1997 and 'This Is Where I Came In' from 2001.We also, of course, talked about several of their legendary hit songs that we love from the 1960s and 1970s. Kerry and I then discussed the classic television sitcom 'Barney Miller,' which ran for 8 seasons on the ABC television network, between 1975-1982. The series has recently seen a resurgence in popularity (especially with younger viewers who weren't around during its original run), due to it airing on television platforms such as Amazon Prime and Tubi. I had a LOT of fun talking about The Bee Gees and Barney Miller with Kerry. If you're a fan of either (or both) of them, I hope you enjoy our show! Ep 18: Point Break, Substack, & Writing Fiction (with Eric Pierce)
In this episode, I was joined by writer, editor, and all-around good guy Eric Pierce. We began by talking about his great Fanfare publication and his equally great All the Fanfare newsletter. Then we discussed the classic 1991 action film 'Point Break,' which starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Eric has written several articles about the movie and is also planning a book about it - so he definitely knows a lot of cool things about 'Point Break!' We then chatted about National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which we're both currently participating in. This led to a fun discussion about fiction writing and some of the different ways it can be approached and accomplished. I had a blast talking about the above things (and more) with Eric. If you're not already familiar with his Fanfare publication, which focuses on pop culture, I highly encourage you to check it out here: https://fanfare.pub/. To find Eric's great All the Fanfare newsletter, click here: https://substack.com/@ericpierceAs for me, most of my writings about pop culture and other things can be found here: https://thebuddygott.com/. I'm joined in this episode by writer and YouTuber Hope Bill Helps, who is currently a few months into a fun challenge he's taken on in which he attempts to listen to an astonishing 1001 albums in just 365 days. We talk about how he came up with the idea, how exactly he's doing it, and how it's been going for him so far. Queer Representation in Films & TV Pt. 2 (with Charlie Cole)
Part two of my discussion with writer, artist, and all-around cool person Charlie Cole about LGBTQ+ representation in movies and television - from both the past and the present. Among the many movies and TV series we discussed in this episode are: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Sex Education, And Then They Danced, Velvet Goldmine, Sherlock, Pride, Carol, Grey's Anatomy, The Last Of Sheila, Making Love, and Basic Instinct. A NOTE TO LISTENERS: Please know that the inclusion of the films and TV series mentioned in this and the previous episode was not done with the intention of us grouping them together as any sort of 'definitive' list of the 'best' Queer representations in film and television. The opinions expressed here merely express some of the opinions of two people and they are not meant to represent the views and tastes of all queer people or of anyone else. This is a public episode. Going Country (with Terry Barr)
In this episode I'm joined by writer and music lover Terry Barr. I've known for a while that Terry is a fan of country music, so I recently asked him to recommend some country albums to me, since it's a music genre I'm not very familiar with. Among the ones he suggested to me were the two albums we discuss in this episode:SIDELONG by Sarah Shook &The Disarmers - originally released in 2015 and re-released in 2017BACK TO THE COUNTRY by Loretta Lynn - released in 1975In addition to talking about the music on the albums, Terry and I also delve into several other topics related to them, including misconceptions about - and prejudices against - country music. We also talk about the growing public acceptances (thankfully) of openly queer artists like Sarah Shook, Orville Peck and others, and we also discuss...well, a LOT of other things!Give us a listen and then go and listen to the great music we talked about - or listen to those two albums first and then join us. I'm not going to be bossy about it. Do whatever works best for you! To learn more about Terry Barr, you can find his many Medium articles here. He's also recently begun writing a newsletter on Substack. The first one can be found here. In addition to all of that, Terry is also the author of four books, including The American Crisis Playlist, which was released in 2022.Check out his writings. You'll be glad you did. Thank you very much for reading and listening. I hope you have a wonderful day!Buddy Gott This is a public episode.
