Is Your Phone's Data Safe When You Recycle It? The Right Way to Do It
Did you know that manufacturing just one smartphone uses around 12,000 liters of water? And globally, less than 20% of electronic waste is formally recycled — even though it's the world's fastest growing waste stream. In this episode, I sit down with Mukul, founder of R3 Factory in Dubai — a company that has spent years quietly reshaping how we think about old electronics. We dive into the questions I've been too nervous to ask: What actually happens to your personal data when you hand over an old device? Is buying a secondhand phone really worth it? And what does "data wiping" actually mean — and why is it completely different from formatting?Mukul breaks down how refurbished electronics are graded, busts the myths around buying pre-loved gadgets, explains why a simple factory reset is NOT enough to protect your data, and shares why Repair always needs to come before Recycle. We also get into planned obsolescence, the environmental cost of constantly buying new, his Eco-Warrior program in UAE schools, and why he believes e-waste isn't just a problem — it's one of the biggest opportunities of our time. This conversation genuinely changed how I see the devices sitting in my own drawer at home. I think it'll do the same for you.If this episode resonates with you, please share it with someone who still throws their old gadgets straight in the bin — they need to hear this! Ep #27 - Aerosol air fresheners - Are they safe and eco-friendly? Find out
Have you ever felt uneasy when smelling aerosol-based air fresheners? I have experienced suffocation when exposed to strong indoor air fresheners, as has my son. My son used to feel nauseous when we used such air fresheners. I never looked into the cause then, but I stopped using these products at home to avoid feeling suffocated and making him uneasy. As I delved deeper into environmental concerns, I was astonished to discover some shocking facts about aerosol products. This includes commercial aerosol air fresheners, perfumes, nail polish, and more. But today, we will mainly focus on air fresheners. Here's the not-so-fresh fact about air fresheners - they do not "freshen" the air. Contrary to the name, these products mask unpleasant odors, often with artificial scents. A cocktail of chemicals is used to create these synthetic fragrances, many of which could harm our health and the environment. In this episode, I delve deep into the reasons why you should stay away from aerosol air fresheners and all the science behind ground ozone that is creating havoc for us and the planet. Also, I give you some good alternative natural solutions that will benefit your health and the environment. Bees! When I used to hear about them or probably have one flying around me, the instant reaction is always to be scared and close my ears :)) Does this happen to you too? Or relate to it with some other response? I was terrified of bees, but that fear slowly dissipated after reading this book, "What Has Nature ever done for Us?" There is a chapter in this book called "Pollinators," when I was reading that, I realized they are so precious to our ecosystem and survival. They are more than just honey makers!! In this episode, I delve into why these bees are essential for our survival, their extinction, and what we can do about it as ordinary people. It is always a dream when you buy your first house or even move into a new home, even a rented one; that excitement is constantly surging through you to decorate it, make it as beautiful as you can, and purchase everything fancy as possible and on a budget you can afford! This is precisely what I felt for every rented house I moved in too :)) But most of us hardly think about what materials we bring to decorate our houses because it is external to us; it is not what we wear or eat. Most of all, we never think at the end of its life how it will be discarded because we never think of where the waste goes and what impact it has on the environment, which in turn will affect us! If you have started fretting, thinking you can relate to this, my friend, you are not alone; I am with you too! Not until a few years ago did I think about all these questions. Sumithra is an Architect, An interior designer who designs eco-friendly spaces, an entrepreneur, and sustainability advocate. Some interesting incidents that she discusses in this episode spiked her curiosity to experience the processes in nature and made her delve into the world of sustainable living. In my understanding, I think she was the one who first introduced bio enzymes into the UAE market. Her small business then was a perfect model for a circular economy. Recently, she has embraced a new entrepreneurial venture to establish a bio enzyme manufacturing unit in Dubai. Her focus is on locally producing 100% plant-based bio enzyme products, aligning with her commitment to a greener future. Being a new mother she discusses her experience of how she has embraced an ecofriendly lifestyle with ease. Through her passion for upcycling and repurposing furniture, she creates distinctive and environmentally conscious designs that bring new vitality to old spaces. She has so many interesting things to share so I have split this podcast in two parts. Part 2 will be published next week same day same time where Sumithra will take you through her experience of running an Eco friendly interior designs company called the Bobbin Project 🙂 Do listen to the end, and if you have anything to add or any comments, write to me at the email address below.
