Your Worst Nightmare Is Your Greatest Training Tool (Visualization Part 3)

This episode explores advanced visualization techniques for specific athletic challenges, covering pressure management, injury recovery, performance slumps, the yips, and strength enhancement through mental imagery. We dive into practical protocols athletes can use to overcome common psychological barriers and optimize performance.Key InsightsVisualization works by making challenging scenarios feel normal and rehearsed. Just like Alex Honnold visualizes falling to his death while free soloing, athletes can inoculate themselves to pressure, setbacks, and fears through detailed mental rehearsal.Your brain can't distinguish between vivid visualization and real experience. This allows athletes to get unlimited "perfect reps" mentally, rewrite negative memories, and maintain skills even when physically unable to practice.0:00 Intro3:32 Pressure Management8:26 Injury Recovery12:49 A Word From Our Affiliates - Create and Jasper14:49 Breaking Through Performance Slumps19:01 The Yips21:24 Strength Enhancement Through Mental Imagery23:20 RecapMy new book on visualization: https://amzn.to/42oS4hVProducts I use:Create creatine gummies: 20% off with code: "ATHLETEX": https://trycreate.co/ATHLETEXJaspr Air Purifier: 20% off with code "ATHLETEX": jaspr.co/athletexExponential Athlete SocialsSupport the Show: https://patreon.com/ExponentialAthleteTwitter: https://twitter.com/athletexpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/exponentialathlete/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-exponential-athlete-podcastSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4XmCCYsVVOVmRavFYT5b1C Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-exponential-athlete/id1726985417Website: https://exponentialathlete.co/Affiliates:Track your health data with Whoop. Harvard Psychiatrist: How Elite Athletes Master Crippling Stress (Exclusive Interview)

There is a crisis facing elite athletes that is hidden in plain sight. The crisis is one of mental health. More recently, high profile athletes like Michael Phelps have been vocal about the depression they have faced during their careers. Many more athletes stay silent, or even worse, ignore their symptoms. I’ve talked at length about the mental health challenges that face high level athletes. While I’m well read about these topics, I’m no expert, and wanted to get a professional perspective. I spoke with Dr. Ryan Davis to learn more details about the mental health landscape facing elite athletes. He is a Harvard-trained, Board-certified psychiatrist in Child, Adolescent, And Adult Psychiatry. As the founder of the Mind Health Institute in Beverly Hills, he leads a multidisciplinary mental health practice focused on providing comprehensive, personalized care. He has expertise in both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. What is special about Dr. Davis is that he also works with elite athletes and business executives as a performance coach. He is the perfect person to talk about mental health in high level athletes because understands them intimately. In this episode, he goes in-depth into the mental health for elite athletes and shares his wealth of knowledge on improving mental resilience, achieving peak performance, and creating more purposeful, balanced lives. The Harsh Reality of Being a Team USA Athlete (Exclusive Interview)

Many athletes work their whole lives for a chance to compete in the Olympics. Thousands of hours go into training for an event that can last a few minutes. Some like Miachel Phelps find glory, while many more fall short of their dreams. Few know this journey better than Dave Durante. During his career, Dave put in the hard work and saw success and heartbreak at the highest level. He gives an incredible candid look into the process associated with the pursuit of greatness on the world stage. Dave is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and was part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team as an alternate. He helped coach Stanford University to an NCAA Team Title in 2009. He is also the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness and Power Monkey Camp. In this episode we learn how Dave handled the lowest point of his career, when he was not selected to compete in the 2008 Olympics. We explore the day to day of a Team USA athlete before and during the games, what Dave has learned about being an elite athlete from being a coach, and how the future is looking for olympic sports like men’s gymnastics (Spoiler, it isn’t promising). The Coaching Mastermind Behind Michael Phelps and Leon Marchand (Exclusive Interview with Bob Bowman)

In the 2024 Olympics, Leon Marchand broke the 200 IM Olympic record that Michael Phelps had set in 2008. Many people see this as a beautiful passing of the torch. On the Exponential Athlete podcast we see this as the continuation of a legacy. Leon and Michael don’t just have olympic gold medals and records in common. Both of these athletes are disciples of the legendary coach Bob Bowman. His methods have been proven at all levels of swimming and have stood the test of time. He is the current coach at the University of Texas and has held head coaching positions at Arizona State, and the University of Michigan. He was also the US Olympic team head coach in the 2016, and has been involved USA swimming since 2004. In this past Olympics, he also coached Leon on the French team. Bob is the author of the golden rules, one of my favorite books about creating systems for success in sport and in life. Today, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bob about the similarities and differences between Leon and Michael, his coaching philosophy, creating resilience on his teams, and the fine details that make champions. If you’re already a fan of the pod, you know that I’ve already done extensive study into Bob and Michael. It was amazing to be able to learn from him in person. 00:00 Intro 01:33 Similarities Between Leon and Michael 05:08 Creating Adversity 08:08 Goals 13:10 Differences Between Leon and Michael 25:04 What is the role of a coach 28:34 Experimentation 32:48 How did Bob Study? 40:57 Lactic Acid Testing 43:41 Visualization 49:06 Biofeedback Books Referenced: The Science of Winning: https://amzn.to/3VK9zpF The Power of Now: https://amzn.to/3ZFIe93 Finding the Winning Edge: https://www.scribd.com/document/212816221/Finding-the-Winning-Edge The Football Coaching Bible: https://amzn.to/3ZWGQQSThe Swimming Coaching Bible: https://amzn.to/4gEl3mw Keith Bell Book: https://amzn.to/4gZHy5JExponential Athlete Socials Support the Pod on Patreon: https://patreon.com/ExponentialAthlete Twitter: https://twitter.com/athletexpodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exponentialathlete/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-exponential-athlete-podcast Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4XmCCYsVVOVmRavFYT5b1C Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-exponential-athlete/id1726985417 Website: https://exponentialathlete.co/ Affiliates: Track your health data with Whoop. What Elite Performers Can Learn from Green Berets (Exclusive Interview)

Some of the most impressive advancements in performance come from our military. Earl Woods taught Tiger very early on the importance of standard operating procedure, and Bob Bowman took his swimmers to train with the military to build resilience. I went to Camp Mackall in North Carolina to learn from the special forces about the systems they use to assess and select elite performers in the military. I learn about the characteristics of great soldiers, which happen to be many of the same things that make great athletes. More specifically, I spoke with CSM Lee Strong and SM 'Chuy' Almonte. CSM Lee Strong is a professional soldier with 27 years in the U.S. Army, 24 of which have been spent in a special operations community as a Special Forces soldier more commonly referred to as the “Green Berets”. He has conducted routine and contingency deployments in 11 countries across 4 continents, and served at every level of command within a Special Forces Operational Group. SGM Chuy Almonte is also professional Soldier with 28 years experience in the US Army, 24 of which have been in special operations, both as a Support Soldier and a Commando. He has deployed in all corners of the globe - supporting of Joint Combined Exchange Training missions to Asia, combat operations to Afghanistan, Counter Narco-Terrorism missions in South America and Central Asia, and numerous missions throughout the African and European continents. 00:00:00 Intro 00:03:54 What Do You Look for in Soldiers? 00:07:08 ARSOF Attributes 00:11:30 Evaluating Attributes 00:19:24 How to Create Trust and Compassion 00:29:21 Goals for Soldiers 00:32:21 Who Drops Out? 00:37:08 Can You Instill Intrinsic Motivation? 00:40:40 Understanding Core Values 00:49:10 Habits of Successful Soldiers 00:52:50 Feedback and Data 00:58:00 Low Tech vs High Tech Training 01:00:46 Assessment Vs Training 01:03:28 Calculated Risks 01:11:57 Secret Language Resources: Core Values Deck: https://amzn.to/3VpnWQ3 ARSOF more info: https://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/specialty-careers/special-ops Exponential Athlete Socials Support the Pod on Patreon: https://patreon.com/ExponentialAthlete Twitter: https://twitter.com/athletexpodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exponentialathlete/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-exponential-athlete-podcast Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4XmCCYsVVOVmRavFYT5b1C Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-exponential-athlete/id1726985417 Website: https://exponentialathlete.co/ Affiliates: Track your health data with Whoop. Military Performance Expert: "Colleges are Sabotaging Their Best Athletes" (Exclusive Interview with Dr. Allison Brager)

To better understand what circadian rhythms mean to athletes, I interviewed Dr. Allison Brager. She is a neurobiologist that specializes in circadian rhythms, sleep, and behavioral genetics research. She is currently the Deputy Chief Science Officer at the JFK Special Warfare Center and School leading the Special Forces research into human performance. Dr. Brager is also an elite athlete herself. She was a professional crossfit team athlete and an 11x gay games gold medalist. Allison serves on the NCAA task force for Mental Health and Sleep and was a contributor to the NCAA student athlete mental health handbook. She is also the author of Meathead: Unraveling the athletic brain. In this episode, we touch on the purpose the circadian rhythm serves, the things that can disrupt it, and how we can help to regulate during travel and stressful situations. We also touch on how Dr. Brager turns her research into practice in her athletic pursuits. 00:00:00 Intro 00:04:34 Circadian Rhythms Basics 00:20:29 What Disrupts Circadian Rhythms 00:33:21 Pac 12 Move 00:39:16 Sleep Depravation vs Phase Shift 00:44:51 Behavioral Genetics 00:53:17 Tradeoffs for Athletes 01:00:43 Lactic Acid 01:06:11 Meathead Allison's Resources: https://www.instagram.com/docjockzzz/?hl=en Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire - https://qxmd.com/calculate/calculator_829/morningness-eveningness-questionnaire-meq https://humsci.stanford.edu/feature/sleep-experts-share-strategies-minimize-jet-lags-effects-college-athlete-performance-and Exponential Athlete Socials Support the Pod on Patreon: https://patreon.com/ExponentialAthlete Twitter: https://twitter.com/athletexpodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exponentialathlete/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-exponential-athlete-podcast Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4XmCCYsVVOVmRavFYT5b1C Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-exponential-athlete/id1726985417 Website: https://exponentialathlete.co/ Affiliates: Track your health data with Whoop. Olympic Sleep Doctor: "Great Sleep Rivals Performance Enhancing Drugs!" (Exclusive Interview)

During the peak of Michael Phelp’s career, he was sleeping 8-10 hours a night plus an additional nap during the day. Sleep was an integral part of his routine and recovery. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for all athletes. According to the NCAA, over half of college athletes report getting insufficient sleep. There are many things that make it hard for athletes to get proper sleep. Early morning practices, travel schedules, late night workouts, and anticipation of events can make it difficult to get the recommended 8 hours. So, what can athletes do to get the most out of vital human function? I talked to Dr. Michael Grandner to find out. Dr. Grandner is a licensed clinical psychologist and is the Director of Sleep and Health Research at the University of Arizona. He has served on both the Mental Health Task Force and Interassociation Taskforce for Sleep and Wellness for the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), the Mental Health consensus committee for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and works to help improve sleep and performance in professional and non-professional athletes. In this episode we go deep into the sleep needs of athletes, what role sleep plays in performance and recovery, how athletes can manage sleep during difficult training and competition schedules, the tools and protocols for getting a great night's sleep every night, the role of dreams, and how sleep is related to mental health. 00:00:00 Intro 00:02:20 What Should Athletes Know About Sleep? 00:07:02 What Systems Does Sleep Impact 00:19:48 Sleep Disorders 00:25:55 Pain and Sleep 00:34:12 What is Bad for Sleep? 00:46:23 Irregular Sleep Cycles 00:53:43 Naps 00:59:01 Survivorship Bias of Sleep Deprived 01:06:13 Naps Deeper Dive 01:10:17 Supplementation for Sleep 00:16:27 Behavioral Strategies for Sleep 01:35:05 Devices in Bed 01:45:13 Drugs and Sleep 01:57:28 Sleep Tracking Devices 02:13:23 Sleep and Injuries 02:25:47 Dreams 02:33:28 Sleep and Mental Health Resources: - sleephealthscreen.com - sleepeducation.com - behavioralsleep.org - cbti.directory Exponential Athlete Socials Support the Pod on Patreon: https://patreon.com/ExponentialAthlete Twitter: https://twitter.com/athletexpodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exponentialathlete/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-exponential-athlete-podcast Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4XmCCYsVVOVmRavFYT5b1C Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-exponential-athlete/id1726985417 Website: https://exponentialathlete.co/ Affiliates: Track your health data with Whoop. Understanding the Mental Health Endemic in Elite Athletes (Part 4)

"Bob, the only coach I’ve ever had. He had trained me, punished me, motivated me, inspired me, and proven to me the connection between hard work and success. Bob has long been one of the very few people in my life to tell me the unadulterated truth, even when I didn’t want to listen. Perhaps most important, especially when I didn’t want to hear it." Outside of athletes, coaches may be the most important figures in all of sport. Often they start as parents or non-professionals eventually evolving into people who coach full time. Michael had one coach his whole career in Bob Bowman. Other athletes like Tiger Woods and Roger Federer have had many through their careers. In this episode we try to answer, what is the role of the coach? What is the breadth of value a coach can offer to an athlete. As part of this discovery, we also look into how coaches and athletes can communicate and build trust. Finally, we examine the role of the athletes themselves. 00:00:00 Intro 00:11:24 Outlining What is Possible 00:17:43 Setting Standards 00:29:48 Creating a Gameplan 00:37:40 Thinking Long Term 00:43:08 Research 00:49:57 Creating Adversity 00:58:34 Protecting the Athlete 01:02:55 Motivation 01:12:24 Goals 01:16:35 Perspective 01:20:11 Transparency 01:43:10 Building Trust 01:46:55 The Role of the Athlete Resources - Books - Beneath the Surface (Autobiography): https://amzn.to/4eJK4fk - No Limits (Autobiography): https://amzn.to/4h7zjVR - The Golden Rules: https://amzn.to/48g2vGb - 10X is Easier than 2X: https://amzn.to/4faohhe Resources - Podcasts: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9yrT2c-yyU&ab_channel=BlueWire - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-WwtG625sI - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISuQHEUpJW8 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG5pLBH4-9s Resources - YouTube: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHjtJLu5F24 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MheXi-r-hdU - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjMVZp0X_gw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25c1ZYVF_f8 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1gqy5KJhww - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsBk_U8mhQA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCPAl1yPKGk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LoPcX1U3FU - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDsk9At6aEU - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErcP2VIbgus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8ZZS0qrVNw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw4YYKk-60I - Calories Burned in Pool - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr-wf-EevUc - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xagTJo_vGTk - Characteristics of Champions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkqjHRN11NM - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao4fEglWqms - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl1LJx1JEjU - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OelU90hH0QA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmIUibhpyPc - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0Kma3WLbTQ Resources - Articles and Movies - https://www.si.com/olympics/2015/11/09/michael-phelps-rehabilitation-rio-2016 - The Weight of Gold

The New Protocols for Knee Injury Mitigation and Recovery (Exclusive Interview)

Right now, there is a very concerning trend in sports. Injury rates almost across the board are increasing at unprecedented levels. Knee injuries, in particular, are taking thousands of athletes out of play and jeopardizing their careers. According to the British journal of sports medicine and UCLA Health, knee injuries account for 41 % of all sports injuries. Anterior cruciate ligament injuries, specifically, have been increasing at endemic levels. From 2007 to 2022, the average ACL injury rate grew 25.9%. Tiger, Roger Federer, and Kobe, the three athletes we’ve studied thus far on the podcast have all had knee surgeries at some point in their career. Today, I brought in Zak Woodward to talk all about knee health. Zak is a performance coach who has built a career out of helping athletes recover from knee surgery as quickly as possible. His athletes have seen unprecedentedly low re injury rates. In today’s episode, I talk with Zak about why knee injuries are increasing, how athletes can lower risk of knee injury, and his philosophy on how athletes can come back stronger after surgery. The NEW Brain Science Helping Athletes to Get Ahead (Exclusive Interview)

In sports performance, we spend so much time talking about the tangible aspects size, speed, and strength, that we often overlook the colossal impact that the brain and the motor control system have on skill. Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Zach Schonbrun. Zach wrote the book, the performance cortex, which is a deep study into the often misunderstood ways that the brain impacts sports performance. In this episode we talk about how athlete brains differ from non-athletes, what is the real meaning of genius in athletes, and why promising new technology often doesn’t get adopted by elite athletes. What it Takes to Shoot the Lowest Round in Golf History (Exclusive Interview with Jim Furyk)

In the history of the PGA tour, there have only been 12 rounds where players have shot under 60. There is only one person who has accomplished this feat more than once. Not only that, he also holds the record for shooting the lowest round in a PGA tour event, a 58 at TPC river highlands. This man is Jim Furyk, and I had the pleasure of interviewing him today. We learn about his mental approach and the voices he was hearing in his head when shooting these low scores, how he developed his unique swing, and his experience going head to head with Tiger in one of my favorite playoffs in golf history. Certified Mad Scientist Explains How Athletes Can Learn from Super-Soldiers (Exclusive Interview)

What can the advances in how we maximize the potential of soldiers teach us about performance in athletes? Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Andrew Herr. He is a certified Mad Scientist by the U.S. Army and has spent the majority of his career obsessing over how to make teams of soldiers (Navy Seals) and athletes faster, smarter, and better. In other words, he was tasked with creating super-soldiers. He is now the CEO of Fount where he delivers comprehensive, customized, performance health solutions. In this episode, we look at the health tools and protocols that many athletes may be overlooking in their preparation, the importance of timing and individual customization of nutrition, and what drugs and approaches are pushing the cutting edge and grey areas of sport performance. Learning Expert: The Key to Perfect Practice in Sports (Exclusive Interview with Dr. Will Wu)

Both Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods were relentless with their practice. They spent thousands of hours honing their craft in the gym or on the course. While this created a tremendous advantage, it also broke down their bodies. What if there was a way that they could have achieved the same results with dramatically less repetition, in turn reducing the physical sacrifice? Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Will Wu. He specializes in motor control and motor learning, the stealth sciences that underly the effectiveness of our approach to practice. In this episode we learn about how some of the underlying mechanisms of our motor learning work, what most athletes are missing in their approach to skill development, and the types of practice that give you the most bang for your buck. Interviewing Kobe Bryant's Secret Performance Coach

Kobe went public with his alter ego, the black mamba after winning the NBA Championship in 2009. What most don’t realize is that this alter ego was in the works since 2003. It was painstakingly crafted and iterated on with the help of a performance coach specializing in identity based performance.  Today’s guest is the man that actually constructed the Black Mamba with Kobe. As a coach, he has helped thousands of athletes, leaders, and public figures get out of their own way to reach their potential. Todd Herman has logged over 17,896 hours of one-to-one coaching, and his courses, and training programs, and businesses have transformed the lives of over 2 million people, not just pro athletes. His book “The Alter Ego Effect” was a massive eye opener for me into how changing our perspective can change our life.  In this episode, we learn how our imagination can be one of our greatest assets in improving our performance, the specifics of how Todd worked with Kobe to craft the black mamba, and what traits many of the high level athletes Todd has worked with share. Why Most Great Athletes Have an Alter Ego | Deep Dive

Kobe Bryant leveraged the Black Mamba alter ego to buffer his play on the court from the chaos of his real life. Other athletes have also used this tool to maximize their performance and disassociate from their fears. In this deep dive, I pull out my favorite highlights from "The Alter Ego Effect", a book by Todd Herman. This is no substitute for the book, but a simple distillation of some of what I thought were the most important parts and how they relate to the athletes we studied. In the episode we learn why people create alter egos, which athletes have used them successfully, and how you can create one to dominate your field of play. 2x NBA Champion Explains the Secret Behind a Championship Team (Exclusive Interview)

The approach to winning is different for everyone. For Kobe, it was taking control of the game and making his impact known. For today’s guest, it was about selfless, often overlooked contributions that made everyone around him better. While his individual stat lines didn’t always turn heads, something special happened with every team that he was on. They started winning more and more. This eventually culminated in 10 playoff appearances and 2 NBA Championships over a 13 season NBA career. At every level, Shane Battier was able to make his teams better. He was a 3 time state champion in Highschool, won an NCAA Championship and National College player of the year honors while at Duke, and eventually made 3 finals appearances coming away with 2 championships with the Miami Heat.
