The TV Shows That Carried Us Through 2025 - Our Top TV Picks of the Year

In this episode, I’m joined by my fellow talented TV watcher buddy Mandy Newman and we share our top TV shows of 2025. But apart from sharing our top watches with you, we also get a little deep (and honest) and share why TV mattered for us in 2025. We talk about why certain shows landed so deeply this year, what they say about the season of life we’re in, and how television can sometimes meet us exactly where we are. From stories of grief and reinvention to humour, relationships, faith, power, and identity, this conversation explores how good storytelling can help us make sense of our own lives. In addition to sharing our Top 5 shows of the year, we also include quite a few honourable mentions, and reflect on themes that kept appearing — particularly women’s stories, emotional honesty, and the quiet reassurance that comes from feeling seen. This episode is for anyone who’s found comfort in a familiar show at the end of a long day, who’s noticed how their viewing habits have shifted over time, or who is simply on the look out for something fab to watch! So, settle in and join us — and as always, we’d love to hear what stayed with you this year. Lots of loveAlex x  Summary In this episode, Alex and Mandy reflect on the role television played in their lives throughout 2025 — not just as entertainment, but as a source of comfort, connection, and insight. Through an honest, wide-ranging conversation, they explore how storytelling can mirror real life, help us process grief and change, and spark meaningful conversations about identity, relationships, faith, power, and personal growth.  The discussion highlights the growing representation of women’s stories on screen, the emotional impact of vulnerability in storytelling, and the quiet reassurance that comes from feeling seen. This episode celebrates television as a deeply human medium that can offer both escape and understanding.  Key Takeaways Television can provide genuine comfort and a sense of connection. What we’re drawn to on screen often reflects the season of life we’re in. Women’s stories and perspectives are increasingly visible in modern media. Grief, identity, and relationships are common themes in recent storytelling. Representation in media influences how we see ourselves and others. Humour can be a powerful way to explore serious themes. Stories about women and power remain deeply relevant. Television can spark meaningful conversations about society and culture.  Chapters 00:00 — The Therapeutic Power of Television 08:02 — Comfort Watching & Emotional Connection 12:20 — Motherhood, Work, and Identity 15:00 — Comfort TV vs Gripping TV 22:51 — Celebrating Age, Talent, and Visibility 24:04 — Faith, Relationships, and Belief 30:45 — Women, Power, and Representation 32:42 — The Healing Power of Humour 43:29 — Reflections on Aging and Storytelling 45:34 — Finish Want more from The Grown-Up Girls Report? Follow along and join the conversation:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegrownupgirlsreport🎧 Subscribe so you never miss an episode.

Reinventing Midlife, One Dress At A Time

Midlife Reinvention, One Dress at a Time A personal reflection on midlife reinvention, creativity, and building a fashion brand in your second chapter. In this episode, I’m reflecting on midlife reinvention — and sharing my own story. This is a very honest catch-up, where I share where I’ve been, what the past season has held, and why it’s taken me a little while to return to the microphone. I open up about launching Nancy The Label — a business born from legacy, creativity, and a deep desire to create something meaningful in this second chapter. I share the excitement, the fear, the self-doubt, and the moments of courage that came with starting again. This episode is for anyone who’s felt the nudge to change direction, who’s wondered if it’s too late, or who’s standing on the edge of something new and slightly terrifying. Reinvention is rarely neat or linear — and that’s okay. So, settle in and join me — I hope this conversation reminds you that you’re not behind, you’re not alone, and it’s never too late to begin again. Lots of love Alex x  Chapters 00:00 The Journey of Reinvention Begins 05:24 Launching Nancy the Label 12:00 The Challenges of Midlife Reinvention 16:05 Rediscovering Identity in Midlife 18:49 Embracing Change and New Beginnings 20:04 Finish   Want more from The Grown-Up Girls Report? Follow along and join the conversation:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegrownupgirlsreport🎧 Subscribe so you never miss an episode.

It was shortlisted for the 2021 ABIA Prize and was the Dymocks book of the Year in 2020. Honeybee is a gorgeous coming of age story about a young Australian teenager struggling with gender dysphoria who is living in the margins of society. As mothers of teenagers, Jules and I both adored this book. This one is highly recommended - in fact - Jules considers it to be one of the best books she has ever read!Want more from The Grown-Up Girls Report? Follow along and join the conversation:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegrownupgirlsreport🎧 Subscribe so you never miss an episode.

Book Club - Tea & Honesty with Jules Sebastian

In this episode I chat with Jules Sebastian about her first book Tea & Honesty. This book was such a joy to read - I even noticed that I started exclaiming out loud as I was reading it - regularly piping up with 'Absolutely' or 'Yes! Yes'. I very much felt that Jules and I were singing from the same songbook. In fact, I think she had me with her opening quote 'Life is like a cup of tea. It's all about how you make it.' After discussing our favourite teas and Jules' honest confession that she isn't an Early Grey fanatic like myself, we workshop the book including: - the quest for identity and the importance of being brave and owning who you are - the importance of finding your community and keeping them close - empathy and the inspiring story of US based company - how comparison is the thief of joy - and why we need to put our blinkers on and focus on our own lane. - how fear can be so disabling and how Jules moves through her fear- the loss of Jules' brother, Andrew, to suicide, just 5 days after her wedding day and Jules' thoughts and approach to managing grief. Book Club - Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld

I've been so looking forward to reading Curtis Sittenfeld's book Rodham for our book club. And it's finally happened. I'm joined by my clever author and song writer friend Mandy Newman to discuss this truly unique read. Rodham is a work of fiction that speculates what Hilary could have done if she had not married Bill. What would she have been able to achieve without Bill in her life? It's a blend of political biography and popular fiction. Curtis is clearly a Hilary fan girl. Both Mandy and I wonder if perhaps this book is in fact how Hilary's fans would have loved to see the outcome of the 2016 election, which she famously lost by a narrow margin to Donald Trump. If you are a Hilary fan or intrigued with the American political system then this book is a must! Check out our website here for more details. Book Club - Atomic Habits by James Clear

This week on the podcast, we are delving back into the world of self help with a book that is truly outstanding. Atomic Habits by James Clear is a must read - you absolutely need to put this at the top of your to be read pile! But apart from introducing to this great book, I am also so delighted to be introducing you to a very dear friend and Habit Expert - Matt Cowdroy who helps me workshop this book during the episode. This book is about transforming your life with tiny changes in behaviour. James Clear believes that real change comes from the compound effect of hundreds of small decisions - doing 2 push ups a day, waking up 5 minute earlier, drinking a cup of water every time you drink a coffee. He calls these atomic habits because he believes minuscule changes can turn into life altering outcomes.Check out the website for our favourite takeaways from this incredible book.Happy listeningAlex xxWant more from The Grown-Up Girls Report? Follow along and join the conversation:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegrownupgirlsreport🎧 Subscribe so you never miss an episode.

In this episode I workshop Trent Dalton's highly anticipated second novel, All Our Shimmering Skies, with my clever editor friend Julie Collard. Both Jules and I enjoyed this book - it is a true sensory experience. It centres on the story of big hearted, motherless Molly Hook, a gravedigger's daughter, and her quest to not only navigate her toxic father and uncle but get to the bottom of a curse that she believes Aboriginal elder Longcoat Bob placed on her family. Book Club - The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams

The Dictionary of Lost Words is the story of Esme Nicoll, who works alongside her father in The Scriptorium, where words are being compiled and assessed for inclusion in the First Oxford English Dictionary. Over several years, Esme gathers together a trunkful of words that are either excluded or never considered for the Dictionary. These are essentially women's words - words that the men who control the dictionary would never consider. Many years later, Esme's gathered words are published into the novel entitled Women's Words and Their Meanings, after Esme's collection is passed onto a typesetter at the Press. Esme's theory that 'all words are not equal' is confirmed when she presents a copy of the novel to the editor who takes over Sir James Murray after his death. He rejects the volume as unscholarly and not a 'topic of importance'. The Dictionary of Lost Words is Pip William's first work of fiction. She has previously written a memoir, entitled One Italian Summer, that detailed her move to Italy with her partner Shannon and their children. The Dictionary of Lost Words was heavily endorsed by Aussie author Thomas Kenneally earlier this year when he said he was certain that a "more original" novel "will not be published this year". Although Pip is an Aussie author, the book is headed for worldwide release - it will be published by The Great House which published Mark Twain and Huxley - whose works, ironically, helped shaped the first Oxford Dictionary which is covered in the bookWant more from The Grown-Up Girls Report? Follow along and join the conversation:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegrownupgirlsreport/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegrownupgirlsreport🎧 Subscribe so you never miss an episode.

BeautyChat - Why This Aussie Natural SkinCare Brand Is Saying No To Toxic Ingredients

In this episode, Alex speaks with founder of Aussie Skincare Brand Inkandi, Tanya Newcombe, about what nasties to avoid when choosing which skincare brand is best for you.Since her early 20's, Tanya has always had a passion for health. But when she discovered that our skin is our biggest organ during an anatomy lesson, she committed to ensuring what she put on her face was as natural as possible.A few years ago, she was trying to find natural skincare suitable for her teenage daughter's skin but couldn't find anything that fit her criteria. So, the idea for Inkandi was born. Tanya has spent a lot of time and energy working closely with expert botanists to develop a skincare range suitable for both teen skin and also mature skin. She even has a range suitable for oily skin and an overnight spot remover - all without toxic ingredients!!Tanya believes consumers should absolutely avoid buying skincare that contains parabens and Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS). Parabens can have adverse affects on human hormones and SLS can be very irritating and drying to skin.Inkandi skincare is 100% natural, 100% vegan and is proudly Australian made. Book Club - How To Be Australian by Ashley Kalagian Blunt

What a treat this week to have another fabulous Aussie author (yes, we're claiming her!) Ashley Kalagian Blunt on the podcast this week to discuss her new book - How To Be Australian. This wonderful memoir, which Ashley refers to as her 'love letter to Australians', details her first five years in Australia with her new husband Steve. They arrive in Sydney assuming that Australia is just like Canada with more sunshine and strange animals! But they soon discover things aren't so simple. Steve struggles to settle and Ashley fears he will come to regret both the move and the marriage - especially after she loses her wedding rings on Bondi Beach. Baffled, homesick and increasingly anxious (in a land renowned for 'no worries'), she is preparing to return to Canada when Steve shockingly announces that he wants to stay in Australia. Forever. For the sake of her marriage and her happiness, Ashley must find an Australia she can belong to: she decides to travel the country, learn its history, decode our cultural quirks and connect with as many Aussies as she can meet.
