The 6 Drivers of ATC Success- Driver #5 - Picture
In this episode, I talk about the "Big Picture". I talk about what it is, and WHAT IT IS NOT. I also talk about the picture you need to focus on while you are at the Academy or in training. It's basically this:Big Picture- NOFocused Picture- YES!!The "picture" that air traffic controllers use is not one the keeps the entire sector or airport in our heads. The "picture" controllers use is one that focuses on individual aircraft and how they fit with the aircraft around them. And we do it 1 aircraft at a time. At the Academy, this is SO important. You have to get away from trying to see the entire problem at once. You have to focus on 1 airplane, 1 strip, 1 data block at a time. The focus becomes finding the highest priority task you need to get done, doing it correctly, then finding the next highest priority task you have. And so on until the problem ends or you run out of tasks. Remember, it isn't the "Big" picture, it IS the "Focused" picture. Build your picture 1 task at a time.Thank you all for listening!! The 6 Drivers of ATC Success - Driver #1 - Purpose
In this episode, I start a new series where I talk about the 6 Drivers, or main areas of focus, of ATC success. If you can get these 6 areas strong, then your likelihood of success at the Academy, and after the Academy, will go up immensely. Today, I looked at the first driver: Purpose. If you have a weak purpose, or haven't really thought about your "WHY", then it will be difficult to get past the tough times at the Academy and during your training. On the other hand, if you know your "WHY" and you remind yourself often of why you are in OKC, your chances of success will increase exponentially. That is why this is so important and why it is the first Driver.Thank you for listening!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The Mental Game of Academy Success- The Comparison Trap
In this episode, I talk about one of the quickest ways to lose confidence while you are in training:It's Comparison.Comparison makes you feel behind, even when you are improving. You're often comparing your worst moments to someone else's best.Confidence comes from progress, not comparison. The only comparison that matters is :Your performance today versus yesterday.Thank you all for listening! The Mental Game of Academy Success- What to do After You Make a Mistake
In this episode, I talk about mistakes and what you have to do after you make one.ALL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS MAKE MISTAKES! And every student who has EVER gone through the Academy has made mistakes too. Every Single One!!What separates the successful Academy students from those who are not successful is what happens after the mistake is made. The Mental Game of Academy Success- The " I'm Behind" Trap
In this episode, I talk about one of the most universal feelings for students at the Academy: the feeling that they are behind. It happens at some point for almost every student who has ever gone through the Academy. It doesn't matter which option you are going through or how much experience you may have, at some point you will feel behind.Remember: Slow is Smooth. Smooth is fast. - Navy SealsFast is Slow. Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. - Air Traffic ControllersEveryone will feel behind, the worst thing you can do is to try to speed up.Trust your processes. Trust your steps. Trust the work you have put in.When you feel behind, focus on 1 aircraft, 1 step, 1 action. The Mental Game of Academy Success- The Voice Inside Your Head: Self-Talk in ATC
In this episode, I start a series on The Mental Game of Academy, and ATC, Success. This first episode focuses on the Voice in Your Head, or Self-talk.For a lot of us, we are our worst critics. I know I have been over the years. If we allow ourselves to always be negative in our self-talk, then we will always be limiting ourselves. If we have nothing but negative thoughts, our results will probably be negative as well. If, however, we can change that around and be more positive with ourselves and start to be more realistic with ourselves, then we can shatter our self-imposed ceilings and our goals and dreams become attainable. It CAN be done! The ATC Success Cycle- Test, Fail, Learn, Improve, Reenter- Repeat
In this episode, I talk about what I call The ATC Success Cycle. You need this when you want to grow and improve as an air traffic controller. This is especially important if you are at, or going to, the Academy. You will have at least some moments at the Academy where you fail. It is guaranteed. The difference between students who succeed and those who don't is: how they respond to those failures. The Success Cycle is this:You Test ( a new technique for instance). You Fail ( It doesn't work). You Learn ( Why didn't it work)You Improve ( What can I do differently to get better). You Reenter ( You try again). Then you start the cycle all over again. Each time you do, you get better. You grow. You progress.Nick Saban, University of Alabama Head football coach, said, " Don't waste a failure."In ATC, failure is data. The only mistake is when you ignore what it's trying to teach you.Thank you for listeningFOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 7 - The Law of Coachability
In this episode, I finish our journey through my 7 Laws of Academy Success. This week is Law 7 - The Law of Coachability.Being coachable is one thing that you HAVE to be when you are at the Academy. If you cannot accept the instruction that you are going to get from your instructors, then you don't have much of a chance of being successful at the Academy. However, if you go into the Academy with the attitude that you are going to get every bit of information you can from your instructors, AND you are going to dedicate yourself to implement that information, then you can succeed at the Academy and beyond. That is what being coachable is all about. The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 5 - The Law of Composure
In this episode, I talk about staying calm or composed at the Academy. The Academy is designed to see if you can stay calm and composed. It will test your composure over and over, and if you are not prepared for that, the chances or your success go down drastically. If you can develop composure and the ability to stay calm and focused in the middle of a scenario, then you WILL succeed! Staying calm and composed is probably the number 1 skill you need to develop at the Academy. It is also one of the top skills the FAA is looking for.So work on it every day. The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 4- The Law of Navigation
In this episode, I talk about how anticipation will beat reaction every time when it comes to air traffic control in general and to the Academy specifically.Being able to anticipate what is going to happen at the Academy is hugely important and will make scenarios so much easier than if you stay in reaction mode all the way through.Anticipation= Being, and staying, aheadReaction. = Being, and staying, behindThe only way you can get to the point where you are able to anticipate and know what is coming in a scenario is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 3 The Law of Priorities
In this episode, I talk about a topic that you will hear over and over while you are at the Academy and for the rest of your career as an air traffic controller: PRIORITIES.It starts with understanding that your number 1 priority on any given day is THAT DAY!If you are worried about what is coming up in 3 or 4 weeks, or you are trying to learn something that your instructors have not taught you yet, or you may even not be placing a priority on practicing, then you may have your priorities messed up. And if your priorities are messed up in this career, you have a HUGE problem.Getting your priorities right is a must, that's why this is a Law and not just a suggestion.Concentrate on the fundamentals and MASTER them. Then, you can go on to more advanced things that you will have to know. Without the fundamentals, you won't be able to master the more advanced things that are required.Thank you all for listening! The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 2 The Law of Process
In this episode, I talk about the second law: The Law of Process. This law is all about consistency. Day after day, after day, after day...At the Academy, consistency beats "natural talent" every time. Someone with natural talent who doesn't try to increase that talent has already hit their ceiling. On the other hand, if you are consistent about Intense, focused practice then your ceiling will increase every day. That is why this Law is SO HUGE!Don't wait for a "breakthrough" moment. Don't wait until you've had bad runs. Don't have inconsistent routines. Start your time at the Academy with a PLAN and work that plan every day. If you do, I guarantee that you WILL get better!Thank you all for listening! I hope and pray that these episodes will help you! Why Preparation is Key to Success at the FAA Academy
In this episode, I talk about what may just be THE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can ever do to help you as a student at the FAA Academy.Being prepared for the Academy is NOT a choice! It is something that you either do, or not. Once you make the choice to not prepare, you will probably never get a chance to change that decision, and that is so very unfortunate. There are 4 major areas that you need to make sure you have prepared for BEFORE you get to OKC:AcademicMental and EmotionalLifestyleExpectations vs RealityI go over each of these areas as well as giving you insight into the "Why" of some of the things the Academy does.Understand this: Talent helps, but Preparation determines who survives and thrives at the Academy.Thank you very much for listening! What Do You Do About the Holidays as a Controller?
In this episode, I talk about what it is like to be an air traffic controller during the Christmas season.I also talk about what it is like to be a student at the Academy during Christmas. I was there myself during Christmas as a student. The most important thing to make sure of is that you have a plan for the Holidays and that you include your family and loved ones. You WILL be able to make memories with your family every year, but, a lot of those years are going to take some planning in order to make those special moments happen. Those memories are worth anything you have to do, any leave you have to take, any shift swap you have to make. They are worth it!!MERRY CHRISTMAS!!Thank you all for listening! How to Take Your Talent to the Next Level
In this episode, I talk about another topic from the amazing John Maxwell. I talk about how we can take our talent to the next level. The steps involved are :Learn to Listen. This is probably the most important skill an air traffic controller needs to do their job well.Understand the Learning Process. This is SO important while at the Academy. You have to understand that your improvement is a process that includes- Action; Looking for and evaluating your mistakes; searching for a better, or correct, way to do the tasks; and starting the process over again.Look For and Plan Teachable Moments. Look for moments where you can learn from someone else AND GET BETTER.Make Those Teachable Moments Count. Put into practice what you learn from the teachable moments. Put them into practice immediately or the moments will be gone and the opportunity lost.Ask Yourself, " Am I Really Teachable?" Am I willing to listen to someone else and learn everything I can from them? Remember- "Everything we know, we learned from someone else!"- John WoodenIt is great to have talent, but there is always a higher level that we can take our talent to if we care enough about being the best that we can be.Thank you all for listening!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. Understanding, and Preparing for, the Beast That is the FAA Academy
In this episode, I talk about how you need to understand what the Academy is going to do to you while you are there. The Academy is going to stretch you, kick you, lift you up on amazing highs, and send you to unbelievable lows. And that is all before you even get close to your evals. One of the keys to succeeding at the Academy is knowing, and preparing for, what is coming. You need to know what to expect. you need to know the goals that the FAA haas for each and every one of you. If you know and understand their goals and the processes they will use to reach those goals, then you can deal with the INEVITABLE ups and downs that are going to happen while you are at the Academy. Those ups and downs are part of the process because they are the same ups and downs you will face for the rest of your career as a controller. So, start preparing yourself when you first get your date to go to OKC. Prepare yourself, mentally, emotionally, and physically for the Academy. If you do this ahead of your arrival to OKC, the probability that you will pass skyrockets!Once you get to the Academy, use your knowledge of the process to get you past the bad days that 100% of you WILL have. Looking Ahead After 37 Years in ATC
In this episode, I look back at my first day at the Academy, November 8, 1988. I also look ahead to what it might be like to be an air traffic controller in your future.I talk about some of the things you will have to endure while being an air traffic controller. Things like:Weird schedules and days off.Being a government employee during shutdowns and threats of shutdowns.Lack of sleep.etc. , etc. , etc.Yet with all of this negative stuff, I still think that this career is amazing and SO worth trying to be a part of.A lot will change over the next decades in ATC. I believe that the need for controllers will continue to grow and the technology should be fascinating to see.If your dream is to be an air traffic controller, then I would wholeheartedly suggest you pursue that dream. In this episode, I talk about how you can be prepared for the evals at the Academy.Last week, I talked about NERVES and what you can do to mitigate them as much as possible. This week, I talk about what that looks like.It requires you to commit to becoming better every single day you are in OKC. That commitment is essential to becoming the best you can be while you are at the Academy. If you need help making that commitment, or need help keeping that commitment, let me know. How Do I Fight Nerves at the Academy?
In this episode, I go back to a couple of my first episodes and talk about one of the hardest things about the Academy: NERVES.I talk about what you can do to limit the effect of the nerves you are going to have. I also talk about the fact that being nervous before an eval is NOT necessarily a bad thing- it means you care!Prepare as much as you can, and don't let yourself lose sight of why you are there and what you want to accomplish!thank you all for listening! How Do I Learn How to Multi-task at the Academy?
In this episode, I talk about multi-tasking as an air traffic controller.Multi-tasking is doing more than one thing at the same time. If you use that definition, air traffic controllers DO NOT multi-task. We do ONE thing at a time. We just do them so quickly that it appears that we are multi-tasking.The problem with multi-tasking is that when we try to do more than one thing at a time, we don't do anything as well as we could have!! Period!Instead of trying to multi-task, get better at doing one thing at a time correctly and going to the next task quickly. Then do the next task correctly, and so on.Speed kills! Speed is not your goal at the academy. Accuracy is your goal! As you practice and practice and practice, you will get faster naturally. But, always pursue accuracy over speed.Thank you for listening!! The Academy is unlike anything you have experienced and if you don't have the right mindset going into it, you are likely to get behind and not be able to catch up.You have to treat the Academy as your job, which is exactly what it is. If you have the mindset that you are an employee of the FAA, that your employer has certain expectations from you, and that you are going to do whatever it takes to meet those expectations, then you have a great chance of succeeding. If you don't have that mindset, your chances of succeeding go down drastically.Treat your time at the Academy, or at CTI school, as a job, with the highest expectations on their employees, and you can succeed. Get as many people around you to help you on this journey and help those who are trying to help you. Do these things and you can be on the road to one of the greatest careers there is.Thank you all for listening!! Have a great week!!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. Being Intentional at the Academy
In this episode, I talk about being intentional while you are at the Academy. I talk about what this is, what it looks like, why you need this and more. Most students are not intentional about their time while at the Academy. I have never known a student who could coast through and pass. I have know some who have tried. I was actually one of them; until I figured out that coasting was not going to work. I changed in time to pass. I had a couple of classmates who didn't change... and didn't pass. This is not the first time I have talked about this subject, but I can not stress how important it is to be intentional with your time while at the Academy.Thank you all for listening! If you have questions or just need to talk, you can email me at [email protected] . How Can I reach My ATC Goal?
In this episode, I try to build on what I've been talking about for the last couple of weeks. This week, I talk about another John Maxwell podcast that talks about finding your purpose and reaching your dreams. We each need a dream to shoot for, or you may want to call it a purpose for our life. We have to have something that we are reaching, or striving, for. Whether that is to be an air traffic controller or to be something else, we need to have something that we have to work toward, or strive after.Once we have found this, we need to ask ourselves 4 questions:What price are you willing to pay to reach your goal? How long are you willing to stay to reach your goal? What things are you willing to delay to reach your goal?Who are you willing to slay to reach your goal? Or who are you willing to let into your inner circle to help you reach your goal? When it comes to passing the Academy, these are questions that need to be answered BEFORE you get to OKC. Then you need to ask yourself these questions often as you go through the Academy. All goals that are worth attaining are going to be "Uphill Goals." They are going to require effort on your part to get there, They are going to require that effort "All the way." You are not going to be able to coast and reach your goals.I offered a challenge to each of you as I, too, begin a journey to try to reach some goals that I have, Let me know what your dreams and goals are, what you are going to do daily to reach them, and maybe we can help each other. Maybe we can walk Side by Side along this journey instead of feeling like we have to do it on our own.I'm here. You can email me at: [email protected] .The website is at: sidebysideatc.com .Thank you all for listening!! Have a great week!!

How Do I Get Through the Tough Times at the Academy?
In this episode, I let you know that you ARE going to have tough times while you are at the Academy. It is a given. It happens to 100% of the students! Some things that will help when this happens are:Make the decision to not give up BEFORE you get to OKC.Make sure you do everything you can do TODAY. Don't worry about tomorrow or the next day.Be intentional about every day at the Academy; even when you are taking time away from ATC.You have to make each day count while in OKC. Make each day count BEFORE you get to OKC.Remember: Today Matters !!Thank you all for listening!I can't believe it has been 1 YEAR of podcasts!!If you have a question, email me at: [email protected] .The website is at: sidebysideatc.com .If you like the music, you can find more at gregorianrock.com . The One Thing You CAN"T Do If You Want to Pass the Academy
In this episode, I talk about the thing you can't do if you want to be an air traffic controller:GIVE UP !!You are going to have days when you know that this career is not for you. You are going to have days at the Academy when you ask yourself why you are there. You are going to have bad, bad days. It is going to happen. I know this because it happens to me and it happens to EVERY student that goes through the Academy. 100%! You can bet the house on it!!There are ways to make sure you do not make the decision to give up on your ATC dream. I discuss some of those ways in this episode. I hope they will help you.If you need, or want, to talk, my email is [email protected] . Should I Try to Become an Air Traffic Controller?
In this episode, I talk about some questions you should ask yourself if you are interested in becoming an air traffic controller. This career is not for everybody. If your strengths are not geared towards this type of career then, even if you are successful at the Academy, you may find that this career has just turned into a JOB. And not a very fun job at that. Some questions to ask yourself ( or ask someone who knows you really well)Do I like a fast paced work environment? Can I think on my feet quickly? Can I make decisions quickly? There are other questions to ask, they will be different for everyone, but these are some that everyone should ask before you start this journey.I have worked with people, and seen students, who can do this job, but it can ruin their life and take all of the joy out of life. Try not to be that person. If you have questions about this, or anything else, let me know. My email is [email protected] . Review of "Arrival Push- A Game of Vectors" and Other Thoughts
In this episode, I review a brand new ATC board game that is out there called :Arrival Push- A Game of Vectors.I have played the game twice so far. The first time, I didn't use all of the rules. I left out the Weather and the Event cards. I was glad I did. This allowed me to get use to the movement of the airplanes and the other aspects of the game before introducing some, and sometimes a lot of, complexity into the play. Adding weather especially complicated the game.I did play by most (99%) of the rules the second time. It was much harder but still manageable. AND A LOT OF FUN!! I thoroughly enjoyed playing the game both ways, and look forward to adding in some of the extras such as military flights, special flights, and playing it as a departure sector instead of an arrival sector. Final Verdict: Thumbs Up!! If you like board games and you like airplanes, this is for you!!You can get it at: pushingtingames.com .I had some other thoughts that you can help me with, please let me know your thoughts. You can email me at: [email protected] .A reminder: The sale of my coaching programs is almost done! There are a few spots left at the GREATLY reduced prices! After they are gone, the prices are going to increase greatly and the number of spots in the 1:1 coaching programs is going to be reduced as well. SO DON"T DELAY!!!You can get more info at: attractwell.com/sidebysideatc . If you can't find what you need on the website, just email me and that will be enough to reserve your spot and freeze the price at the sale price.Thank you all for listening!!Have a great week!!

Why is Teamwork SO Important at the Academy?
In this episode, I talk about teamwork and how it is not just important in air traffic control, but how it is imperative at the Academy. In the 5 years that I was an instructor at the Academy, I saw numerous classes who worked together throughout their time in OKC. I also witnessed classes who didn't. There was a stark difference between the two. I'm talking class pass rates of 80-90% versus below 50%.I talk about how important it is to help the classmates who are struggling. It will help them, AND it will help you. Teaching someone else is the BEST way to deepen your own understanding. I guarantee it; 100%!Don't believe me? Try it and see!Thank you all for listening! It is wonderful to hear from you!If you have any questions, you can email me at: [email protected] .If you want to lock in the sale price for any of the coaching programs, you can go to: attractwell.com/sidebysideatc .If you have a question about the website, just drop me an email.Have a great week, and remember that I will always be with you Side by Side.

What is P-A-L-M?
In this episode, I talk about one of the most important concepts in radar. The concept of P-A-L-M.In the radar lab, you use PALM to identify actions that you need to take whenever an aircraft is changing a route or an altitude. You do this to ensure that you have covered everything that may happen because you have re-routed, or climbed, or descended an aircraft. What this means is that when you are going to move an aircraft up, down, or sideways, you need to make sure that the new route or altitude is safe for them, as well as for you.you do this by going through the four letters:P---Point Out. Does this aircraft need a point out along its new route? This is a HUGE question and HAS to answered for their ENTIRE route through your airspace. Not doing this could cost you LOTS of points.A--- Correct Altitude for Direction of Flight. Has the new route changed the aircraft's course to the point where it is now at an altitude that is IAFDOF( Inappropriate Altitude for Direction of Flight)? This is also a HUGE question and HAS to be answered, and possibly solved, in a careful manner.L--- LOA's. Does the new route/altitude conform to the LOA's? Of course, you have to know the LOA's to answer this questionM---Military Airspace. Does the new route/altitude conflict with ACTIVE Military Airspace? These are 4 questions that you have to ask, and answer, about every aircraft that you change an altitude on or change their route. The correct answers will save you a TON of points during your evals. So you MUST practice these in the labs and when you are practicing with your classmates. They are ESSENTIAL!!Thank you for listening!!If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected] .If you want information about my coaching programs, you can go to the new website atattractwell.com/sidebysideatcHave a great week!

Just What is W-H-A-T ?
In this episode, I talk about what may be the most important concept to understand in Non-Radar. That concept is W-H-A-T.W-H-A-T is the technique that is used to change an aircraft's altitude in non-radar so that all of the traffic for that aircraft is missed. It may sound easy, but it CAN get complicated! And it can get complicated quickly! This is W-H-A-T:W- Where is the aircraft, or Is the aircraft in my airspace? I have to ensure that the aircraft is in my airspace before I can change his altitude.H- Is there any active holding pattern airspace in the bay? ( I talk about what the BAY is)A- Is there any airspace that I need to miss in this bay?T- Are there any other aircraft between the altitude my first aircraft is at and the altitude the aircraft wants to go to?As you ask these questions, you are writing down any restrictions you need to give the first aircraft in order to answer the questions: or in order to miss the other airspace or aircraft.See what I mean; it can get complicated very quickly. You have to practice this concept a lot in order to get good at it. You will get a lot of time in class to practice, but you HAVE to practice, WITH YOUR CLASSMATES, at home. The time they give you in class is not nearly enough time to get as good as you need to be in order to do well on your non-radar evals!!!!!!In addition to this week's topic, I am announcing that I will be hosting a LIVE webinar on Saturday, August 16, 2025! The time is 10:00 am ( subject to change). The webinar will feature me answering your most asked questions! You will have to register for the webinar. The first 9 people to register will receive a Side by Side ATC backpack. Everyone who registers will be able to lock in the current 1:1 coaching program praises for 6 months. You will also get reduced pricing for another 6 months. I hope that this episode has/will help someone out there!!Remember: ATC is a team sport. Don't try to do this on your own. Get a team around you. I am always here if you need, and we can get through anything Side by Side.

The 12 Week Year of the EnRoute Academy or How to Plan for the Firehose
In this episode, I talk about how to plan for the explosion of information that the FAA is going to shoot your way during the enroute academy. If you are not prepared for this onslaught, you will get behind. Once you get behind, you may never catch up.Primary Goal of the first 6 weeks--- The Non-Radar EvalsThey are worth 7 points each for a total of 14 points.Secondary Goals for the first 6 weeks--- The TestsThey are the Map Test worth 2 points and the CKT1 Test worth 4 points.6 points total from the 2 tests. As you can see, 14 points is more than 6 points .That is why the evals are your primary goal, because they are worth more points. Because of that, you need to focus the majority of your time on the things that will make you better for the evals. That means you need to focus your practice on the things you are going to use in the evals more than you focus on the tests. You still need to focus on the tests, just not as much, or as intensely, as you focus on everything else you need for the evals.Once you get through Non-Radar, the information really comes at you even faster. It is incredibly easy to get behind during radar. If you have a plan before you start, you have a great chance of succeeding.Primary Goal is, of course, the Radar Evals. They are worth 22 points each for a total of 66 points.Secondary Goals of Radar--- The TestsThey are the Aircraft Characteristics Test ( 4 points), the CKT2 Test ( 5 points), and the Checklist Eval ( 5 points) for a total of 14 points.Just as in Non-Radar, you have to focus on what will help you improve in running the scenarios. This means practicing, practicing, and more practicing. Try to make sure your class understands that they need to practice together now even more than they did in Non-Radar. It is the difference between getting half the class through and getting ALL of the class through. It can be done! But it can only be done as a group, not as individuals.Make a PLAN! Stick to your PLAN!You will be amazed what you can accomplish!!!Thank you all for listening!!If you have a question, or just want to talk, email me at [email protected] and we can set up a call.If you are interested in any of my coaching programs, you can go to attrawell.com/sidebysideatc .Have a great week!!

What is all This STUFF on this Map?
In this episode, I talk about what everything is that is on the Aero Center Non-Radar Map. One of the reasons given for not studying the map before you get to OKC is that you don't know what you are trying to memorize. Well, hopefully, this will help.I go through:Sectors- number, name, and frequenciesNavaids- VORTAC, VOR/DME, and NDBAirways- Victor Airways and Jet RoutesMEA's- Minimum EnRoute AltitudeMIA- Minimum IFR AltitudeMRA- Minimum Reception AltitudeMCA- Minimum Crossing AltitudeMOCA- Minimum Obstruction Clearance AltitudeMOA's- Military Operations AreasMileages on the airwaysRadials of the airwaysAirports Intersections and DME Only IntersectionsDiamond MileagesAll of these things are on your map. The map is one of the most important things you will learn at the Academy. You will use it every day, even in radar.Try to learn as much of it as you can BEFORE you get to OKC. The more you know it, the less time and energy you will have to spend trying to learn it while you are also trying to learn how to do Non-Radar. Thank you all for listening! If you have any questions, please email me at: [email protected] .Have a great week!!

What Can I Do to Prepare for the Academy-- And WHY
In this episode, I talk about 3 things that I think you should do to prepare for the FAA Academy. Whether you are going into the en route program or the tower program, there are 3 things that you should do BEFORE you get to OKC.First: Learn the Phonetic Alphabet for ATCThis is probably the easiest of the 3 and that's why I put it first. It is essential that you know this before getting to OKC. Knowing this will not get you ahead of things when you get there, this is the bare minimum.Second: Learn the MapThis is actually almost as important as knowing the alphabet and it doesn't matter if you are going en route, tower or terminal radar. You need to know your airspace.I go over 3 reasons I have seen given on Discord for not learning the map before you get to OKC and I give my rebuttals to those arguments.Knowing your map BEFORE you get to OKC will put you ahead of where the FAA thinks you will be on day 1. It will put you level with students who have gone through CTI schools ( their students have not started going directly into towers, yet). That is a starting place that you want to be at!Third: Have a Game Plan set up Before You Get To OKCI talk about how you will need to have a plan to deal with when you have night shifts and need to plan study time. Each of you are different and you need to have a plan in place that plays to your strengths as well as those of your classmates. Finally: I get on my soapbox a little and talk about the teamwork and sacrifice that it will take if you really want to have a 100% class. IT IS NOT EASY, BUT CAN BE DONE!Thank you all for listening!I hope and pray that you all have a wonderful week!If you need anything, email me at [email protected] go to attrawell.com/sidebysideatccom . to set up a call to talk about where you are in your air traffic control journey.

Week 12 at the En Route Academy
In this episode, I talk about what you can expect from the LAST week of the en route academy.Yes! It is finally here! And, " Oh, no!", it is finally here! You have finally finished all that the FAA has given you and taught you and let you practice. And it all comes down to how you can perform on 2 days. The interview process has ended and the FAA will evaluate just how well they think you have progressed. That review will be done by humans and not by a computer. The evals are not a test graded by a computer. They are scenarios that let you show off just how much you have learned and how much you have changed over these last 4 months.I spend some time talking about each of the days for this week, what will come up and what might happen. I give some scenarios about scores and some stories about passing even when your first run doesn't go the way you would like it to.Remember this: DON'T EVER GIVE UP!!The week will end with paperwork and, for those who pass, getting to select where you are going to go for your first facility. The last day will be a shorter day than most have been and it will probably be the only day that you can relax and not have to be concerned about separating airplanes.Thank you all for listening!!If you have a question, a comment, or just want to talk, you can email me [email protected] . You can also go to the website: attrawell.com/sidebysideatccom .

Week 11 at the EnRoute Academy
In this episode, I talk about what to expect from the next to last week at the enroute academy. That's right, just 1 more week after this one!!In this week, the FAA stops teaching you new tasks and shows you different ways that those tasks may show up in a sector that is going "RED".Everything that you have learned over the last 3+ months is going to be used to fine tune the controller you are becoming. You will start the week with the last of the "learning" scenarios. Then, you will get to take hold of 5 more points with the Checklist Eval. Most students do very, very well on this eval. After the Checklist Eval, you will know just how many points you have earned so far AND just how many points you will need from the radar evals. Try not to focus on those last 2 days just yet. After, the checklist, you will start 6 days of what I like to call "Eval Practice." I call it that because this is the time you get to practice what it will be like on your evals. The problems will be similar in complexity, similar in number of aircraft, and similar in intensity. They are great practice for Week 12 if you use them that way. Hopefully, your instructors have been told to do a lot less instructing and more evaluating during your scenarios this week. If they have, it will help you so much. Some of these scenarios you've been hearing about from the time you made it to OKC; or even before. Don't let them psyche you out!! Go into each run confident that you know what to do!! Don't let a bad run here or there stop that confidence. At this point, you have done each of the tasks they present to you correctly at least once. All you have to do is string enough together to have a great run... AND YOU CAN!!Also important this week is to try to get sleep! As much as you can! Your body needs it and your brain needs it!!Thank you for listening!! I always appreciate the support! If you have questions, or just want to talk about air traffic, or something else, please email me at: [email protected] .You can also go to the website at : attrawell.com/sidebysideatccom to find out about my coaching programs or to arrange a phone call.Thank you again!!
