What’s Really in Your Water—and How It’s Affecting Your Hair and Skin

Send us Fan MailCould your shower water be one of the hidden reasons behind thinning hair, breakage, or dull skin? ✨Most people focus on supplements, hormones, or expensive products — but rarely think about the water they’re exposed to every single day.Drop a 💧 if you’ve never considered how water quality could affect your hair and skin.I used to assume hair changes were just part of aging or hormones… until I started looking at what was actually coming out of my showerhead. Hard water minerals, chlorine, and even heavy metals can build up over time, leaving hair dry, brittle, harder to grow, and scalp health compromised — even when you’re doing everything else “right.”Once I switched to filtered shower water, I noticed a major difference not only in my hair but also in my skin. Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest impact. And this goes beyond beauty — reducing daily toxin exposure matters for overall wellness too.If you’ve been struggling with hair growth, dryness, irritation, or unexplained changes, your water may be worth looking into. What’s one wellness swap that made a noticeable difference for you?👇 Share below!Link to my filter: https://www.filterbaby.com/drheckLink to EWG: https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/About this Podcast Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Send us Fan MailWe’re going deep, today. Even many of us practitioners have trouble conceptualizing DNA and the interconnectivity of all the components of our bodies. Additionally, how we intercept and feel other people and their energy remains a mystery to some…But, we are all energy beings.  When you walk into a room, you can feel it. Our bodies want to remain in a state of healing and frequently when something is in the way of that healing we feel sick;  it’s our body communicating that something needs attention. Today, I had the privilege of talking to one of my students from Northeast College of Health Sciences about her work in Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) muscle testing. Muscle testing is a form of applied kinesiology. It’s a way to communicate with the Automatic nervous system and the subconscious mind. I get asked this almost daily in my practice: what’s the best way to track menstrual cycles? Sarah explains how the methodology helps us all get back to recognizing what we’re feeling and staying in tune with our bodies. What’s super interesting is that she’s also recognized when those going through perimenopause or menopause show higher levels of cholesterol in their labs due to the body being out of sync with changes in hormone levels. I enjoyed Sarah’s thoughts on hormonal health and getting back to the cyclical nature of women’s cycles like the cyclical nature of our earth and its seasons.About this Podcast Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Biological Dentistry

Send us Fan MailI grew up being taught that my family has bad teeth (root canals, missing teeth). But through my education and training, I know that 80% of our health is lifestyle + environment and 20% is genetics. So, I don’t necessarily subscribe to the belief that we just have bad teeth…  Did you know that traditional fillings contain 50% mercury, silver, tin, and copper… The WHO has mercury on the list of toxic metals. Rather than affecting the nervous system, there are other safer materials we can use. But not a lot of dentists know about this biological approach…  Dr. Suringer Arora is a certified biological dentist. She holds a master’s in public and mental health and eventually found purpose in learning and offering a holistic approach to her patients. She’s also a certified health coach and has holistic training in the art of reiki among other spiritual healings. Her passion is to help people heal themselves along their health journeys. In this episode, we even talked about the impact of jaw formation due to the nutrient-deficient soils and foods we have today. Dr. Arora recommends maintaining healthy levels or supplementation of Calcium, K2, vitamin D3, vitamin C, probiotics, and phosphorous in our diets for optimum oral health. I loved hearing about the upcoming summit she's a part of in Singapore. She's certainly helping with the holistic health movement in Asia!About this Podcast Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Send us Fan MailThe heartbeat of the BeeFree gluten-free company isn’t just their focus on real ingredients and delicious tasting food, but it’s their mission to support the autistic community. Jennifer Weise is an entrepreneur and mother of four sons. One of her sons received an autism diagnosis when he was eight and her motherly instincts took over. We’ve all been there…Their whole family embarked on a gluten-free, grain-free journey, but transitioning to a gluten-free diet wasn't easy. That’s how she and her mother developed many of the BeeFree recipes!Jennifer and her team also created ‘BeeFree Bakes’ which employs young adults with autism. They provide training and practice basic job and interpersonal skills, they work on building confidence amongst team members and allow them to find camaraderie among coworkers. Did you know that 80% of adults with autism are either unemployed or underemployed? “If I can make just one impact in our community with that statistic then I feel really good.” I hope you enjoy Jennifer’s story!About this Podcast Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Imagine Heaven with John Burke

Send us Fan MailSpiritual well-being is something we often don't talk about. A lot happened for me this past fall… my husband had an accident that led to a life flight, we found out we were pregnant with our third (which was a complete surprise), and then I decided it was time to quit my job. I found myself searching spiritually and somehow this brought me to John Burke’s interview on the Shawn Ryan podcast and seeking to read his book, “Imagine Heaven”. It was all life-changing. John Burke is an engineer, the co-founder and former pastor of Gateway Church, a NY Times Best Selling Author, and has dedicated his life to studying over 1,000 near-death experiences (NDEs).“There are about 40 commonalities in what people consistently say in these NDE interviews. I think that NDEs help people see this life with a new perspective - the good, the bad, the struggles, the suffering, and why love is so important and so hard.”John shares specific NDE examples in this episode and of course, I requested more information on his research. About this Podcast Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Biohacking for Dogs

Send us Fan MailIt’s no surprise that while we all love to treat our furry friends like family, in many cases they need and deserve the same healthy practices as humans in order to live their own good-better-best life!Today, I got to interview Dr. Daniel Beatty, founder of Biohacking for Dogs. Biohacking for dogs is the same as biohacking for humans. The foundation of biohacking is removing unnecessary chemicals and toxins from the environment: medications, vaccines, household air fresheners and cleaners - so that you thrive and not just survive. Just as with humans, diet matters. Dogs thrive on the carnivore diet. Imagine feeding yourself kibble: essentially highly processed cereal sprinkled with protein powder. We wouldn’t do it. Dogs also can benefit from supplements like fish oil, collagen, and mushrooms. Our companions who help us through mental health disorders and bouts of loneliness deserve to live the life they were made for.Dr. Dan has more than 25 years as an integrative veterinarian. Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Hack Your Gut Health Documentary

Send us Fan MailMy niece is starting medical school in a couple of weeks and she recently watched the Netflix documentary “Hack Your Gut Health: The Secrets of Your Gut”. She asked me to watch it and share my thoughts with her from a functional medicine and nutrition standpoint. Though I do highly recommend checking the funding source of any documentary in order to spot an agenda, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It is promoting an author’s book, but I actually plan to order a copy to have on hand and may refer patients to it, too.Fun fact: If you’re lacking a certain strain of bacteria in your gut there’s research that suggests you’re more likely to become obese. Our gut is truly our second brain. A healthy gut means a more balanced weight and balanced hormones. Toxins are more often than not a contributor to bad gut bacteria. Chronic antibiotic use can also lead to an unhealthy gut. I loved how this documentary reiterated that we all need to eat seasonally and eat clean for a healthy gut. There was some interesting research and a specific study shared that I feel may need to look into - in other words, the verdict is still out, for me. Overall, I enjoyed this documentary and I support a lot of the author’s findings. I think you should check it out and let me know your thoughts!Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Glyphosates

Send us Fan MailGlyphosates are the most common pesticides in agriculture. Developed in 1950 and commercialized in 1974, glyphosates were patented in 1964 to bind to minerals and clear them out of pipes…  Thanks to Round-up, glyphosates are now present in more than 90% of soybeans, corn, cotton, and sugar beets. Additionally, according to the National Library of Medicine's 2022 published study, residues were found in the urine of 60–80% of the general population in the United States. We are each continually exposed to varying levels of glyphosates via run-off in our water, through our skin from what's in the air around us, and through the food we eat. So, what can we do? As you know, I feel there's always a way to enforce good-better-best practices in our daily lives that can help prevent some of the side effects of this harmful chemical or continually detox after exposure. Send us Fan MailIt’s a root to treat the root cause…Tabernanthe iboga (iboga) is an evergreen rainforest shrub native to Central Africa and Trevor Millar has utilized its healing properties to treat folks like you and me who are addicts or recovering addicts, veterans or suffering from PTSD, battling traumatic brain injuries, struggling with anxiety or depression, and even Parkinson's disease patients. Trevor is the owner of Ambio Life Sciences and his psycho-spiritual treatment is legal in Tijuana, Mexico where he operates two coastal homes that are setup with medical providers, chefs, and caring specialists. In the early 1970s, so many plant medicines that have psychedelic properties were outlawed in the U.S. and the U.N. followed suit along with much of the rest of the world after that. But Professor David Nutt who was an English neuropsychopharmacologist put out a chart in the early 2010s that showed the #1 most harmful drug is alcohol followed by heroin while psychedelics are at the opposite end of the scale. Learn more:Trevor and ibogaine studies: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-023-02705-w Featured on the Shawn Ryan Show: https://ambio.life/shawn-ryan/Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Interview with Karin Reiter

Send us Fan MailMy guest today is Karin G. Reiter. Her nutrition journey started when she was diagnosed at the age of 18 with her first autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s thyroid disease). She then doubled down after being diagnosed with celiac disease following the birth of her second child. She did not see much improvement in her symptoms or antibody levels following a conventional medicinal approach. So, she began to study medical nutrition and eventually left her career in law and finance to devote her life to helping others through the healing power of food. She’s consulted some of the largest organizations all over the world (McKinsey, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Paypal) and has written several e-books including a children’s cookbook. She currently resides in Israel and it was amazing to get this chance to chat with her and share our conversation with you!“You either pay the farmer or you pay medical bills.” Karin helps her clients get to the root causes of their symptoms which starts with the basics: nutrition, sleep, water, identifying toxins, and limiting stress. As Hippocrates stated, “All disease begins in your gut”. Which may not be 100% true, but we need to consume 30 different fruits and vegetables a week + quality protein in order to attain good gut microbiome. Ibuprofen, the birth control pill, antibiotics, alcohol, and stress have killed our gut microbiome! It’s no wonder that we’re seeing more 18-20 year old women who suffer from depression and anxiety, PCOS, endometriosis, and who are being diagnosed with diabetes…I also loved our chat about kids and how we teach them good nutrition when what’s often available and marketed to them are crappy foods. Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Female Hormonal Health

Send us Fan MailWhat affects your hormones, especially your estrogen levels? Well, high-intensity exercises, stress, lack of sleep, certain foods, mineral deficiencies, eating estrogen-generating foods, and allowing toxins to be absorbed from beauty products... in other words, so many things! Anti-nutrients from things like genetically modified 'Frankenfoods' like monosodium glutamate (MSG) and Soy Protein Isolate can affect the production of estrogen in the body. Estrogen hormones are made in the ovaries, the liver, your adrenals, and in your breasts. Many autoimmune diseases and cancers have been linked to the consumption of unfermented and highly processed soy which is often the format we have access to in the United States. Think baby formula, protein bars, and tofu. Whereas, research shows that China has one of the lowest rates of breast cancer. This actually makes sense because they consume fermented soy (Miso, Natto, and Tempeh) which cultivates healthy gut bacteria. Let's talk about how we take care of our estrogen levels, today!Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! That may be an entirely separate episode, so today we're focused on looking through our makeup bags and uncovering our good-better-best options in clean cosmetics. When I was having fertility issues, I immediately started looking through my makeup bag. If you weren't aware, chemicals commonly found in most of today's ready-to-go cosmetics often include highly toxic additives, carcinogens, and endocrine system disrupters. But most recently, he’s been more focused on longevity.Today, we listen as Peter talks a lot about his experience in sports nutrition and perhaps his understanding of the differences between the ‘bro-science’ verses endurance training. He’s also found that sports nutrition has blended itself into overall men’s health including getting more sleep, limiting stress, and how or when we choose to take supplements. While he was training, he restricted his own supplement use due to his fear of being disqualified from competing. He specifically discusses anabolics, amphetamines, and peptides that are now found in the marketplace without any prescriptions and only marketing claims that haven’t actually been tested. Fortunately, some companies are starting to self-police.Peter is a colleague of mine and I always enjoy his perspective. He’s extremely experienced and very informed. Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Seed Oils

Send us Fan MailOur lifestyle choices greatly impact who we are, how we age, and how we function. In most things, I realize we all still have to live our lives and we can drive ourselves crazy reducing our chemical load and constantly refining our diets. Hence the good, better, best mentality. But when it comes to seed oils, I am a stickler!DYK: It takes 680 days to rid seed oils from our bodies! I want you to know that when you eat seed oils, they actually become a part of your cell membranes.   Interestingly, in 1900 heart disease was very rare. But by 1950 heart disease was killing more men than any other disease. Have you heard of a little product called Crisco? Proctor and Gamble were actually the first to introduce this shortening made entirely of vegetable oil which goes through a hydrogenated processes. The body just doesn’t know how to process these polyunsaturated fats that have been highly processed through hydrogenation so it stores them, and it’s no wonder why we’re overweight and chronically sick.Seed oils are linked to:CancerAlzheimer'sDiabetesHeartburnHeart diseaseAutismLeaky gutAutoimmune disordersSupport the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Send us Fan MailWho has ever been on an antibiotic for a UTI and then had to get on something else for a yeast infection?Today, we’re going deeper into urinary tract health and the common signs and symptoms of UTIs. This isn’t just for us women, this also applies to our guys who maybe have been struggling with enlarged prostates, too. There’s truly so much more we can do holistically and naturally aside from the age-old advice of simply drinking more water or cranberry juice. Of course we dive into the research, but also I have tips and insight from my own experience. I’ve received and provided relief through acupuncture for recurring infections and recovery from the pain. D-Mannose is an herb that actually provides similar results to an antibiotic with faster symptom resolution and less recurrence of UTIs. You can also add more pumpkin seeds or parsley to your diet . There are things as simple as changing-up our undergarments and switching from those popular moisture-wicking brands to cotton and bamboo.Additionally, we discuss overactive bladder and the strength of our pelvic floor as we age. An interesting side-note, if you’re low in Vitamin D, you’re more at risk for overactive bladder and incontinence! The vascular system is so tight and compact, that medication changes (diuretics, antihistamines, muscle relaxers) have a huge impact on your urinary tract.Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Her own feeding journey as well as her work as a nurse practitioner and certified lactation consultant has completely reshaped the way she sees healthy feeding.  “5 years ago if you would have told me I’d be working at an infant formula company, I wouldn’t have believed you!” The experience of motherhood is so humbling … even those of us who work in a clinical setting and who feel we have a good grasp on things find various aspects of motherhood to be a curve ball. Shira and I openly share how much we’ve learned by being moms. Unfortunately, we don’t all have that inherent community through holistic, natural interventions…  When you look at the research on breast feeding, we still don’t truly understand milk production or how the thyroid and endocrine system impacts our ability to maintain milk supply. We hope for a world that continues to study this and, in the mean, time provides a safe, acceptable way to care for our babies that includes a happy feeding journey.Bobbi is a European-style formula meaning its iron and DHA levels meet both the EU and FDA requirements; Baby’s Only meets FDA requirements and iron levels for the EU. Both brands are organic, palm oil and maltodextrin free, and 100% lactose based. As we know, palm oil leaches calcium from our bones, so this fact is definitely important to me and my moms. Shira mentions all of the ‘love letters’ Bobbi has received when it comes to relieving babies (and mommas) of reflux or colic gone as they can finally metabolize well and maintain a balanced weight. I have sampled their products and now use them for my own baby girl and would love to help you connect with this brand!Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Loving the podcast? Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Drug-induced Nutrient Depletion

Send us Fan MailWhen your doctor prescribes a medication, do they also spend time telling you all of the side effects and how you can also combat those? My guess is no...Today, we’re spending time discussing various over the counter and prescribed medications - which do have a time and place - and how they can deplete the body of various nutrients. For examples, Prilosec or Omeprazole deplete the body of calcium. Women on birth control are often depleted of folic acid and B vitamins. Antibiotics deplete the body of magnesium. Knowing all of this can help us uncover how to combat those depletions because, over time, these nutrient depletions can contribute to chronic disease. It’s very good insight and, hopefully, will help you marry traditional and holistic health and wellness practices so you can live your good, better, and best life.Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Inflammation

Send us Fan Mail"You are what you eat. Don't be fast, cheap, easy, or fake."We're continuing the conversation about anti-aging and specifically focusing on inflammation and how it relates to what we consume. Like anything, the quality of what you put into your body is what you'll get out of your body. We look a little closer at healthy fats, supplements, and herbs. I also mention sugar addiction and a self-assessment you could perform if you want to know whether you're addicted to sugar. We dig a little deeper on signs and symptoms of intolerances, inflammation, and deficiencies. Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation! Holistic Health with Dr. Heather Heck: Anti-aging

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we just brush the surface of anti-aging practices and why they matter for inflammation mitigation… if you listen to the end and just become more conscious of what you’re eating or not eating, learn how you can decrease as many chemicals in your environment as you can, incorporate stress-relieving therapies into your daily life, find out more options for exercising, and see why you should be getting quality sleep, then we’re on the right track.Do you know the most Googled health questions? Flu symptomsDiabetesADHDAnxietyConcussion symptomsHeart attackHigh blood pressureKidney stonesDepressionStrokeAllergiesNow, we can’t control all of these, but there are ways in which we can mitigate our risk and create a centurion lifestyle for ourselves.I love the book, The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner. He takes a dive into a variety of cultures that have had the longest living people and shares how we can take practices and characteristics of those environments and incorporate them into our own lifestyles in order to promote longevity. For example, one culture utilizing ‘Hara Hachi Bu’ from the Japanese means to eat util your 80% full. In European cultures, meals are a social and therapeutic practice where you savor your food as you catch-up with those around the table. Multiple studies have shown that genetics makes up only 20% of your health, which means 80% is your environment:  you can modify your emotion regulation, promote a healthier lifestyle through exercise and nutrition, get enough sleep for healing, and work in some therapy all for a less inflamed system.Inflammation is proven to be the root of all chronic disease. So, not sleeping means we’re not healing, we have an increased risk for heart disease or immune issues, and we have an educed mental response time. There’s not one ‘Superfood’ above all foods; it’s about quality and variety. Of course, we do know some foods have tons of antioxidant properties like green tea, cocoa, turmeric, blueberries, and nuts.Did you know, there’s a study conducted from 1960-2018 that shows there’s a 1% increase in ininfertility year over year? Think about what’s changed during that timeframe : our food sources and production, more chemical load, faster paced lifestyles, and more stress. My favorite therapy is red light therapy which we don’t get naturally anymore unless we are waking with the sun and watching the sunset. So, I love my Mito red-light!You can add years onto your life through anti-aging practices and you can make them quality years with your families and friends by reducing inflammation and increasing your antioxidants.Support the show☕ Fuel the Conversation!
