Midlife Reclaimed: A Podcast for Women Over 40 Navigating Midlife Burnout
by Shannon A Swales - Midlife Burnout & Women Over 40 Mentor
Midlife ReclaimedMidlife Reclaimed grew out of my own journey through burnout, recovery, and early midlife, and now holds space for conversations about perimenopause, mental health, and self-compassion.I’m Shannon A. Swales, clinical psychologist, writer, and fellow midlife woman. This podcast began as Burnout: A Different Kind of GAP Year, where I shared my lived experience of midlife burnout in real time—alongside the stories of guests who bravely opened up about their own burnout journeys. As I returned to my work as a psychologist supporting others through burnout, the podcast evolved into When Burnout Becomes Reality—a space to explore the truth of how burnout unfolds and how healing begins. I began interviewing fellow professionals (and reflecting on my own clinical insights) to help listeners access the knowledge and know-how to recover and grow from burnout. Now, as Midlife Reclaimed</e

Midlife, Unscripted: A Space to Reflect, Question & Come Back to Yourself
This episode may resonate with midlife women navigating burnout, identity shifts, or a desire to reconnect with themselves in a more compassionate way.Episode Description:This isn’t an episode to give you answers. It’s a space to gently turn toward yourself. In this solo episode, I invite you into a quiet pause, a space to step outside of the narratives we’ve been given about midlife — especially as women — and begin to explore what feels true for you.Together, we move through a series of reflective questions:What beliefs do I hold about midlife… and where did they come from? What is this season of life actually feeling like for me right now? What no longer fits… and may be ready to fall away? What might be quietly emerging underneath it all? This is not about fixing, striving, or finding the “right” way to do midlife. It’s about creating space to notice, to question, and to gently come back into relationship with yourself. You’re invited to pause the episode at any point, take your time, and reflect in whatever way feels natural — journaling, thinking, walking, or simply being. If you’ve been sensing a shift, questioning things more, or quietly wondering “is this it?” — this space is for you.🧡 Take what resonates🌻 Leave what doesn’tAnd as always, take gentle care of youHost: Shannon Swales: Clinical Psychologist, award-winning author, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. Art Therapy for Midlife Women: Reconnecting with Creativity, Joy & Yourself
WOMEN IN PODCASTING AWARDS: Show your support by voting for Midlife Reclaimed: https://www.womenpodcasters.com/midlife-reclaimed Voting is open April 1 - 30th. Creativity is something many of us leave behind as life becomes fuller, busier, & more demanding. But what if reconnecting with creativity in midlife could be one of the most nourishing things we do for ourselves? In this ep, I’m joined by Chrissy from Artuition for a warm & honest conversation about art therapy, creativity, & the midlife experience. We begin with a very real midlife moment — the kind of tiredness many women recognise as their bodies start asking for more attention & care. From there, our conversation unfolds into the role creativity can play in reconnecting us with ourselves. Chrissy shares her journey into art therapy & explains how creative expression can support our bodies, offer a different way to process thoughts & emotions, & help women reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been quietly set aside for many years. This conversation explores how creativity can become a gentle pathway back to yourself — not through pressure or perfectionism, but through curiosity, expression, & permission to simply create. If you’ve ever found yourself thinking “I’m not creative” or feeling disconnected from the joy you once felt in creative activities, this episode offers a compassionate invitation to explore that part of yourself again. In this ep., we explore:- Why creativity often fades from our lives as responsibilities grow- The connection between midlife, fatigue, & listening to the body- What art therapy actually is & how it works- How creative expression can support the body & mind- Reconnecting with creativity after burnout or long periods of caring for others- Why giving yourself permission to create can be quietly revolutionary in midlifeGuest Chrissy: I am a proud AuDHD’er (Autistic-ADHD), passionate about soulful self-discovery, nourishing personal wellbeing, and expressing, learning and processing through therapeutic arts experiences. Alongside a Masters in Therapeutic Arts Practice with Specialisation in Arts-based Research, and ANZACATA Professional registration, I weave together 30 years as a Professional Artist and Educator, with special expertise working with neurodivergent children, late-diagnosed autistic/ADHD women in peri/menopause, families, LGBTQIA+, and allied health professionals. As a late-diagnosed neurodivergent woman, it’s my passion to support neurodivergent folk to creatively discover their unique strengths, interests and goals for thriving, while expanding the research base of our community’s unique, lived experiences and needs. In my free time, I love chilling at home with my son, puppy Banjo & 3 cats, sipping tea, going on nature walks, making art, building LEGO, tending to my house plants & enjoying gluten-free friendly cafes. Hormones, Mental Health & Identity in Midlife Women
In this episode of the Midlife Reclaimed Podcast, I’m joined by Clinical Psychologist Kirstin Bouse — widely known as The Midlife Psychologist — for an important conversation about hormones, mental health, and identity in midlife women. We explore how hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and menopause can influence mood, anxiety, burnout, neurodivergence, and overall psychological wellbeing. This life stage often brings multiple shifts at once — physical, emotional, relational, and identity-based — and it’s rarely just one factor affecting how women feel.Together, we unpack why midlife can feel unexpectedly intense, how hormonal changes interact with mental health across the lifespan, and why understanding this connection can be empowering rather than alarming. We also talk about the identity reorganisation that often occurs in midlife — that sense of asking Who am I now? — and how this can become a meaningful opportunity for self-understanding rather than simply a crisis. If you’re navigating perimenopause, menopause, burnout, emotional fatigue, or simply noticing changes in yourself during midlife, this conversation offers reassurance, insight, and practical understanding. You’re not imagining it — and you’re certainly not alone. The Midlife Reclaimed Podcast has been nominated in the Women in Podcasting Awards, recognising podcasts created by women making an impact through meaningful conversations and storytelling. When Caring for Others Leaves You in Burnout | Midlife Self Compassion
When caring for others leaves you burnout, midlife can become a turning point for many women. In this solo episode of Midlife Reclaimed, clinical psychologist Shannon Swales explores midlife burnout, caregiver stress, and how self-compassion can help exhausted women learn to care for themselves without the pressure to “fix” themselves. Many midlife women are exceptionally skilled at caring for others — partners, children, ageing parents, clients, teams. But when it comes to their own needs, care can feel awkward, selfish, or unsafe. In this episode, we explore:– Why caring for others often leads to burnout in midlife– How early caregiving patterns shape self-neglect– What self-compassion really means (and what it is not)– Why compassion can feel threatening for burnt-out women– How to practise self-compassion in a gentle, embodied way– A simple compassion practice you can try todayThis is not an episode about self-improvement, optimisation, or fixing what’s broken. It’s an invitation to learn how to care for yourself with the same warmth and steadiness you offer everyone else — especially during midlife, perimenopause, and burnout recovery.Host: Shannon Swales, Clinical Psychologist, award-winning author, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. Perfectionism and Midlife Burnout: Why Good-Enough Is Enough
Perfectionism often looks like being capable, reliable, and responsible — the one others can count on.But beneath those labels, many women over 40 are quietly exhausted and teetering on the edge or tipping over into midlife burnout. In this solo episode of Midlife Reclaimed, psychologist and author Shannon A. Swales explores how perfectionism subtly tightens its grip in midlife — and why it so often becomes a key driver of burnout during this season of life. This conversation isn’t about fixing yourself, lowering your standards, or striving for yet another version of “better.”It’s about understanding perfectionism for what it is — a once-protective survival strategy — and gently loosening its hold so you can live with more energy, meaning, and self-trust.In this episode, Shannon explores:What perfectionism really is (and why it’s not about being perfect)How perfectionism hides behind “shoulds,” “musts,” and rigid expectationsWhy perfectionism becomes heavier and harder to carry in midlifeThe strong link between perfectionism, chronic stress, and burnoutHow perfectionism shows up in work, relationships, self-care, and decision-makingThe perfectionist voice — how it speaks, its tone, and its impact on your nervous systemWhy perfectionism is a survival mechanism — and why it no longer serves youWhat to expect when you begin loosening perfectionism’s grip (including discomfort)How values-based living offers a gentler, more sustainable alternativeSmall, compassionate steps you can take toward good-enough livingShannon also shares openly about noticing her own perfectionism show up while recording this episode — choosing to let it be real rather than polished, and modelling the very practice she’s inviting you into. This episode is an invitation to move away from unrelenting standards and toward a values-guided life — one where worth is not measured by output, and where how you live matters more than how flawlessly you perform.✨ You don’t need to be perfect to be worthy.✨ You don’t need to do more to be enough.Host: Shannon Swales: Clinical Psychologist, award-winning author, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. Letting Go of “Shoulds” in Midlife Burnout: Softening the Rules That Keep Us Burnt Out
In this solo episode of Midlife Reclaimed, psychologist and author Shannon A. Swales gently explores one of the quiet but powerful drivers of midlife burnout for women: the weight of “shoulds.” Those internalised expectations — I should be coping better… I shouldn’t need this much rest… I should be able to do it all — often sit beneath chronic stress, exhaustion, and self-criticism. And yet, they’re rarely questioned. In this reflective conversation, Shannon unpacks:What “shoulds” really are (and how they differ from values)Why they tend to intensify in midlifeHow they keep us overextended and disconnected from our limitsWhy rest alone doesn’t resolve burnout if the internal pressure remainsHow to begin softening expectations with compassion — without guilt, selfishness, or giving up on what mattersThis episode isn’t about lowering standards or opting out of responsibility. It’s about replacing rigid rules with self-respect, discernment, and values — so you can live with more ease, sustainability, and care for yourself in midlife. As always, this episode offers general information and reflection, not personal therapy. You’re invited to listen gently, pause when needed, and take what supports you.Host: Shannon Swales: Clinical Psychologist, award-winning author, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. How to Create Micro-Moments of Rest in a Busy Day
Rest isn’t something we earn at the end of the to-do list — it’s something we can gently weave into the middle of our lives. In this solo episode, Shannon explores how to create micro-moments of rest in the midst of busyness — small, compassionate pauses that help the nervous system soften and restore. She unpacks the myth of “enough time,” redefines what rest can look like in real life, and shares practical ways to experiment with different kinds of rest — from sensory and emotional to creative and spiritual. Drawing on Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith’s “Seven Types of Rest,” Shannon offers real-world strategies for women who find stillness difficult, feel guilty resting, or are learning to regulate rather than run on overdrive.Because rest isn’t just a reward — it’s regulation, renewal, and remembering your humanity. 🌻Host: Shannon Swales — Psychologist, writer, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. When the Culture’s Not Well: The Human Cost of Workplace Burnout
In this powerful conversation, Shannon is joined by Lazz Tomic — a workplace wellbeing and early intervention specialist who’s lived both sides of burnout: as a professional advising on wellbeing, and as someone who burned out while doing that very work. Together they explore what happens when the system itself is tired — when workplace cultures built on productivity, compliance, and “doing more” begin to erode the wellbeing they claim to promote. This episode explores:How cultural values like performance, speed, and growth clash with human needs for connection, care, and restThe concept of moral injury — when our work asks us to act against our core valuesWhy burnout isn’t just an individual issue, but a systemic onePractical reflections on creating workplaces where people and organisations can thriveIt’s a reminder that wellbeing isn’t just self-care — it’s culture care. The Gifts of Compassion: What Midlife Women Need Most (But Struggle to Give Themselves)
In this episode, Shannon is joined by Dr. Stan Steindl to explore the true meaning of compassion — beyond kindness or a fleeting feeling — as a powerful practice that transforms how we relate to ourselves and others. They unpack why so many of us, especially women in midlife, find it easier to give compassion than receive it, and explore the common fears and blocks that get in the way. Together, they discuss how shifting the tone of our inner voice softens self-criticism without losing motivation, and why compassion is about doing what’s good for us, not just what feels good.Stan also shares a simple guided practice to help you begin widening your circle of compassion — to include yourself. 🌻🧡Host: Shannon Swales: Psychologist, writer, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. Why Rest Feels Hard — and How to Let It In
Welcome to Season 8 of Midlife Reclaimed! In this first solo episode of the new season, I’m introducing a fresh format: shorter, more focused episodes designed to fit gently into your month. So many of us in midlife crave rest, yet when the moment finally arrives, it can feel deeply uncomfortable — even unsafe. In this episode, I explore why rest is harder than it looks, and how years of conditioning, caregiving, and productivity culture have shaped our resistance to slowing down.Together, we’ll uncover the hidden barriers — from guilt and perfectionism to nervous system wiring — and learn how to meet them with mindful acceptance and compassion. This isn’t about doing rest “perfectly,” but about beginning, gently, to let rest in as a source of fuel and recovery. If you’ve ever found yourself exhausted but unable to stop, this episode will remind you that you’re not failing — you’re human. And there are softer, kinder ways forward.Host: Shannon Swales: Psychologist, writer, and midlife woman who’s walked through burnout and come out the other side. It’s Not Burnout—it’s Betrayal: Unpacking the Hidden Wound
This episode was groundbreaking for me—both personally and professionally. In my own journey through burnout, and in the stories I witness daily as a psychologist supporting midlife women, I’ve often sensed that there was something deeper—something unspoken—beneath the exhaustion, the disconnection, the collapse. Meeting Lora Cheadle and learning about betrayal as a root cause of burnout felt like discovering a missing link. Lora—an attorney turned coach, author, and speaker—generously shares her story and her powerful F.U.E.L UP framework for moving through betrayal and reclaiming your inner self. Whether it’s betrayal from a workplace, a partner, a friend, or even from within ourselves, Lora guides us toward recognition, healing, and reconnection. I’ll be forever thankful for this conversation, and I truly believe it’s a must-watch/listen for anyone navigating burnout, broken trust, or a longing to return to themselves.Guest: LORA CHEADLE, JD CHt is an author, TEDx speaker, and leadership wellness coach who specializes in burnout and betrayal recovery. She is the creator of the FUEL UP Burnout-Recovery Method and enjoys speaking and coaching on how to move beyond soothing the symptoms of burnout and resolve its root cause. Autistic Burnout
I sat down with Michael Coles, a 49-yr-old autistic man, married, father of 2, & a podcaster. Michael shares his powerful story of experiencing autistic burnout, offering insights into what contributed to it, how he recovered, & how he now works to support his mental health & well-being. We explore key topics like people-pleasing, ableism, workplace accommodations, at-home support, the power of authenticity, & compassionate support from others. It is a must-listen for anyone who is autistic or who wants to better understand the unique challenges autistic individuals face & the real risk of burnout.Guest Bio: Having been diagnosed 3 times, first with PDD-NOS back when he was 3, then diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at 35, then rediagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2017, he has been struggling with high levels of anxiety & stress his whole life. Late last year, he was hospitalised as a result of chronic stress from changes being imposed on him, due to a change in staff members, & their non-acceptance of Michael’s way of working, which previously was going well with accepting staff members. As a result, he needed to resign from his job, & now, through the NDIS, he can access therapies not previously available to Michael. Worker Well-being: Working with the Organisation
In this episode, I had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with Shannon Bowman, the driving force behind Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling (see more about Shannon below). Our in-depth discussion centred around a crucial subject - worker well-being within the organisational context. We explored common pitfalls that workplaces often stumble upon, inadvertently contributing to poor well-being outcomes for workers. Drawing from Shannon's extensive experience, we examined real-life examples of organisations' successes and triumphs, shedding light on effective strategies for preventing burnout and other adverse outcomes. Furthermore, our conversation unravelled the intricate challenges and rewarding benefits associated with implementing psychosocial safety measures within organisations. We navigated through the complexities that both employers and employees encounter when striving to create a work environment that fosters mental health and overall well-being. Guest: I'm a passionate mental health professional and a pioneer in therapeutic approaches and business innovation. As director of Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling, I lead a team of skilled professionals focused on improving the well-being of our community in Geelong. We are particularly proud of our work with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which has profoundly impacted our clients' recovery journeys. My dedication to improving others' lives earned me an Achievement Award from the Geelong City Council - an honour that recognises my efforts as a therapist and entrepreneur. I continually introduce new, effective treatment methods and business practices to our psychotherapy and counselling services. Beyond therapy, I actively share my expertise on mental health issues through various channels such as podcasts and discussions. I also speak at workplaces to share insights on enhancing employee well-being and resilience. As a testament to my resilience, I have used my personal experiences with disabilities since birth as a driving force to surpass conventional limitations. Through my work at Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling, I focus on accessibility and inclusivity, reflecting my commitment to enriching society and offering compassion to those battling psychological challenges. Burnout to Recovery Experience: Author, Editor, Teacher, and Mother
About Episode Episode 24 brings you another brave soul's story of burnout. Edwina's experience will be of particular benefit to authors, creators, editors, teachers, mothers of teenagers, the neurodiverse, the grievers, women, and those who experience relationship struggles or break-ups during burnout. It is amazing how much wisdom can be shared in a conversation that lasts just under an hour. I love what I do. I get to witness someone's vulnerability and how it paved the way for their growth. I get to learn vicariously from them, and I hope you do too. Thanks, Edwina, for your generosity. About the GuestEdwina Shaw is the author of A Guide Through Grief, Thrill Seekers, In the Dark of Night and over 40 published short pieces. She is the editor of Bjelke Blues and Hard As, and also runs Relax and Write Retreats. She teaches creative writing at the University of QLD and in the community, specialising in writing and yoga for emotional healing. http://www.edwinashaw.comAbout the HostMy name is Shannon Swales, and I am a perfectly imperfect Clinical Psychologist. I am passionate about supporting others with the mental health knowledge and skills to thrive in this life, to move from chronically stressed, burnt-out states to one of wellness. My Telehealth practice, Burnout Psychology Support, is a therapeutic space for anyone who feels overwhelmed, lost, alone, trapped and absolutely exhausted every single minute of every single day and looking for support to find a way out, a path through the chronic stress brought about by their work or caregiving responsibilities. A state I know all too well after burning out in February 2021, costing me my ability to work and forcing me to move from caring for others to caring for myself. A move that has helped me to the place of wellness I am at today, with the ability to move back to the career I was trained for, caring for others in a more balanced way.Stay in TouchThe only way this podcast will reach the four corners of this earth, to reach people in need, is through the power of the people - you. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Midlife ReclaimedMidlife Reclaimed grew out of my own journey through burnout, recovery, and early midlife, and now holds space for conversations about perimenopause, mental health, and self-compassion.I’m Shannon A.
