Interview with Pastor Kari
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! Today's episode is an interview with Pastor Kari Parsons about a sit in in a Senate office building in January. We talk about how everything was organized, how the sit in went down, how the Capitol police reacted, and what it was like to be detained as well as why it was important that this sit in happened. You can find out more about the sit-in here. To find out more about Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, go here. I think you'll really enjoy this interview and the next couple of week's interviews. I am hoping to have the interview with Mae and Bill about Christian Anarchism in June. Our next episode will be on May 14th and will be my interview with my friend Vicar Jenny about this sit in. Interview with Mae
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! Today, we have my interview with Mae about her dissertation. The episode is a little longer than normal, but it is well worth listening to. I hope you will enjoy this episode and have been enjoying the last several episodes about her dissertation. In the interview, we talk about the dissertation, she explains a few concepts better than I did, and we go over a few things in more detail than I was able to in my discussion of the dissertation. She also corrects my pronounciation of a couple of names that I got incorrect (my bad!). Our next episode will be in three weeks on April 23rd and will (hopefully) be my interview with Mae and Bill about Christian anarchism. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. You can follow the podcast on Instagram or Threads (@queerpolifaith). Mae's Dissertation, Part 3
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are going to continue going over Mae's dissertation An Accessible Image: Reconstructing the Imago Dei for a More Inclusive Anthropology. Today we are going over Chapters 6 ("An Accessible Difference") which is about how the ideas presented in the dissertation will affect various areas of philosophy and 7 ("Concluding Remarks") which will finish our look at Mae's dissertation. Our next episode will be in three weeks on April 16th and will be my interview with Mae about her dissertation. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Mae's Dissertation, Part 2
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are going to continue going over Mae's dissertation An Accessible Image: Reconstructing the Imago Dei for a More Inclusive Anthropology. Today we are going over Chapters 4 ("The Image of God, Disabled") and 5 ("A Transcendent Community"). Due to the complexity of the topic, we will need a third episode to complete our review of the dissertation. In our next episode, we will finish going over the dissertation. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. You can follow the podcast on Instagram or Threads (@queerpolifaith). Mae's Dissertation, Part 1
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are going to start our look into Mae's doctoral dissertation called An Accessible Image: Reconstructing the Imago Dei for a More Inclusive Anthropology. I was originally planning on taking 2 episodes to look at the dissertation, but I realized it may take 3 episodes. So be prepared for that, I'll know by the end of next episode. The dissertation takes a bit to get through because it has a lot of philosophical and theological concepts that are not always the easiest to explain, no matter how well Mae writes. But it's worth the effort to get through. Our next episode will be part 2 of our look into Mae's dissertation. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Hosanna Tabor v. EEOC
Welcome to season 5 of Queer PoliFaith! In today's episode, we are doing a few things. First, I talk about the first part of the season including the schedule, the theme, and other odds and ends. Then, I get to the meat of the episode. Today, we are going to talk about the Supreme Court case Hosanna Tabor v. EEOC. It's a case about churches, disability, and who is a minister. It is a difficult case because there are aspects that are understandable and aspects that are not. I delve into each area. In two weeks, we will have part one of two parts about Mae's doctoral dissertation. I talk about it a little more in the episode. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. You can follow the podcast on Instagram or Threads (@queerpolifaith). On Bullshit
Welcome to the season finale of Queer PoliFaith! Today's episode is a conversation I had with Billie and Paul Hoard about bullshit. It is part 2 of our conversation about their book Eucontamination: Disgust Theology and the Christian Life from August 28th. It is a really fun conversation that is quite important. The word "bullshit" is (unsurprisingly) used quite a bit. It is being used in a academic way, but if the word offends you, you may want to just skip this conversation. I hope you listen because it is quite informative and important to what is going on around us now. We'll be back in February with new episodes. I am planning on focusing more on the "faith" and "queer" aspects of the podcast since we've focused so heavily on the "poli" part for a while now. Look for a list of episodes in January. Medina v. Planned Parenthood
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! In this penultimate episode of season 4, we'll be talking about the case Medina v. Planned Parenthood in which the Supreme Court decided to cut off one avenue people have of protecting their rights and allowed states to cut Planned Parenthood off from Medicaid funding. Our other case is McLaughlin Chiropractic Associates v. McKesson Corp where SCOTUS continued its assault on the administrative state by stating that, in certain circumstances, the courts do not have to follow an agency's interpretation of the law. Our next episode will be in 3 weeks on December 11th and will be my interview with Billie and Paul Hoard about bullshit. After that, we'll be on break until February 2026. Kennedy v. Braidwood
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today we are talking about the case Kennedy v. Braidwood. We will also be looking at Gutierrez v. Saenz and Hewitt v. US. Kennedy v. Braidwood is another attack on the ACA, this time via the preventative services mandate. I don't spend as much time on the case itself as I normally do because the issues at play are ones we've seen before. Instead, I spend time analyzing the impact that getting rid of this mandate would have via my own personal experiences. Our next episode will be on November 20 and will be about the case Medina v. Planned Parenthood. After that, the last episode of the season will come out on December 11th and will be my interview with Billie and Paul about bulllshit. FDA v. RJ Reynolds and Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton
Welcome to today's episode fo Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are talking about 2 different cases: FDA v. RJ Reynolds and Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton. Both are important enough that I decided that they both deserved to be talked about. We take a brief look at Diamond Alternative Energy v. EPA. FDA v. RJ Reynolds is a case about whether or not retailers who sell tobacco products can take part in a lawsuit denying a company the ability to manufacture a product (in this case e-cigarettes). At its base, this case truly is about the conservatives on the Supreme Court taking apart the administrative state, a mission they have been on for decades. Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton has to do with age verification on websites that deal primarily in pornographic images. At its base, this case is dealing with the puritanical nature of the US and our obsession with stigmatizing sex and nudity. My comments on this may be controversial. Our next episode will be on November 6 and will be about the case Kennedy v. Braidwood. If something changes, I will announce it on the podcast's social media channels. Glossip v. Oklahoma
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we will be talking about the case Glossip v. Oklahoma, a case involving capital punishment that has been bouncing around in the courts for a couple of decades. I start the episode by talking about the case Chiles v. Salazar, a case about so-called "conversion therapy", which is really a form of torture. The other cases we talk about are Bouarfa v. Mayorkas and City and County of San Francisco v. Environmental Protection Agency. Our next episode will be on October 23 and will be about FDA v. RJ Reynolds. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. US v. Skrmetti
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are talking about the case US v. Skrmetti, in which the Supreme Court decided that states are allowed to outlaw or restrict gender affirming care for transgender children. The decision rested on sophistry, which is something we spend a lot of time going over. The other cases are Riley v. Bondi (an immigration case) and Stanley v. Sanford (a disability rights case that gets really complicated). I don't spend as much time on either of these as usual because both cases are more complex than most of the other cases we look at briefly. Our next episode will be on October 9 and will be about Glossip v. Oklahoma. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Catholic Charities v. Wisconsin
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we are talking about the case Catholic Charities Bureau, Inc., et al. v. Wisconsin Labor and Industry Review Commission et al. This was a unanimous decision with 2 concurrences about religious non-profits and unemployment insurance. Partway through the episode, I go on an 8-9 minute rant about the unemployment decision and the US's paltry social safety net. Our next episode will be on September 25 and will be about US v. Skrmetti. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. You can follow the podcast on Instagram or Threads (@queerpolifaith). Eucontamination Interview with Billie and Paul Hoard
Welcome to a very special episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, I am interviewing Billie and Paul Hoard about the book Eucontamination: Disgust Theology and the Christian Life which came out on August 1. We start off by discussing what eucontamination is and why it is important in our current political situation. This episode is more explicitly religious and philosophical than most other episodes. It was a lot of fun and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did. I am also hoping that Paul and Billie will come back for another episode about bullshitting. Keep an eye on social media for more information. To buy the book, you can go directly to the publisher's website and buy it. If you buy it directly from the publisher, you can use the discount code "disgustpod" to get 20% off the book. You can also get it from bookshop.org. You can follow Billie on most social media platforms @billieiswriting. She also has a Substack that you can subscribe to. Paul also has a Substack that you can subscribe to. You can listen to my converstaions with Billie here, here, and here. Our next episode will be about that case Catholic Charities v. Wisconsin and will come out on September 11. Mahmoud v. Taylor
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today we are talking about the case Mahmoud v. Taylor. We are also looking at the petition for a writ of certiorari from Kim Davis asking the Supreme Court to overrule Obergefell. Mahmoud v. Taylor is a case about Montgomery County Public Schools (my home school district) allowing books about queer characters to be read in classrooms. In two weeks, I will present an interview I had with Billie and Paul Hoard about their book which came out on August 1st. It was all sorts of fun and I think you'll love it! Trump v. Casas
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! We are beginning the second half of the fourth season of the show. I decided that the fall of every season will be about Supreme Court cases. This year, there were too many cases to devote an episode to each case. So each week, I will look at one case in depth and then one or two other cases at a very high level. The case named in the title each week will be the main case and at the beginning of each episode I will let you know which other cases we will be looking at. This week, we will focus on Trump v. Casas, the case where the Supreme Court severely limited how universal injunctions can be used. We will also look at AJT v. Osseo Area Schools and Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services. In our next episode on August 15, we will look at the case Mahmoud v. Taylor. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Religious Leaders' Reactions
Welcome to our final episode for the first half of season 4 of Queer PoliFaith. Today, I am reading reactions from religious leaders to the seditious traitors EOs and actions. Below, you will find each of the reactions in the order I read them. I don't do any commentary, just an introduction to each one. I do stop reading Pope Francis' letter at a couple of points to define words that may be unfamiliar to people. Sermon by The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde | 1.21.25 As dawn broke over D.C. - Reflecting on Bishop Budde's Sermon Presiding Bishop Eaton Issues Pastoral Message on Executive Orders Presiding Bishop Eaton Issues Statement on Immigration Executive Orders Letter of the Holy Father Francis to the Bishops of the United States of America Letter to the church on non-binary safety; asking all to join in prayer, learning, speaking out We will be back in mid-August with new episodes about important cases from the Supreme Court from this most recent Supreme Court year. EOs- Other
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are going to look at EOs that did not fit in any other category. I speed through the first few, mainly because they are short and incredibly straight forward. I wanted to leave myself time to go more in depth on the rest, which I do. I make a mistake, which I didn't realize when I was recording. In the episode, I say I have an uncle who works for Jenner & Block, which was true at one point. Since recording, I discovered that he switched law firms in 2016, so he is no longer with them. My bad. If you want to pre-order Billie and Paul's book, please go to this page. Our next episode will be on July 3rd and will be about religious leaders reactions to EOs and other presidential actions. After that, we will be on break until August. EOs- Energy/Environment
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are going to be talking about executive orders related to energy and the environment. As always, I want to remind you to take anything the seditious traitor says with as massive a piece of salt as possible. What he says is almost always the exact opposite of the truth. So his grand sounding titles are the opposite of the truth. Also, there is a definite thread in some of these titles that has to do with trying to assert a more alpha masculine energy or something. It's definitely pathetic and not at all alpha male. Sad! If you want to read the EOs, you can go to https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/ and look there. If this doesn't work for you, follow these steps: [1] Go to https://www.whitehouse.gov and click on the two lines in the upper left hand corner. EOs- Reproductive Health and Military
Hello and welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are talking about EOs related to reproductive health (I give a different name verbally in the beginning, but explain the change near the end of the episode!) and the military. There are a total of 5 EOs to go over, so we also look at a House Resolution as well as 2 EOs that were rescinded by one of the new EOs. I also go on a tangent or two, but they are related to the general topic. You'll know them when you hear them. If you want to stay up to date on the latest news about abortions, please follow Abortion, Every Day from Jessica Valenti. Pope Leo XIV and EOs- Racism/Education
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today we are going to talk about two topics. First, I have a few thoughts about the election of Pope Leo XIV, how he compares to Pope Francis, and a few other things. I also talk more about this here. If you want to read Rerum Novarum, click here. After that, we turn to executive orders related to racism and education. There is a lot of overlap between the two, so we hop back and forth between the two folders. Once again, there is some swearing in this section, so if that bothers you, be prepared. To learn more about vaccines, you can go to Unbiased Science's webpage or Substack. You can also check out Your Local Epidemiologist, DePlatform Disease, and You Can Know Things. EOs- MAGA Nonsense
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today we are discussing what I call "MAGA Nonsense" EOs. Not sure what I mean? I start off with a explanation of what I mean by that nomenclature. Then I briefly talk about a couple of things I got wrong in the last episode. After that, we go through the EOs as usual. I do get a little heated at times because these particular EOs are particularly stupid and driven by conspiracy theories, which drive me nuts. To learn more about some of the health topics (including vaccines) that get touched on in this episode, please go to https://www.unbiasedscience.com/ and also listen to the Unbiased Science podcast. Babylon 5- Some Parallels We Can Draw to the Situation We Are Currently In
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are having a special episode which will air on both Queer PoliFaith and Queerly Popular. We are talking about the 1993-1998 sci-fi series, Babylon 5. It was an awesome series, one of the best in my opinion, and very different from Star Trek, which was in its heyday during this time. I love both, but I believe that Babylon 5 is better. We start off with by placing Babylon 5 within the context of its time in relation to Star Trek and the various shows and movies that aired while Babylon 5 was on. I talk about the plot in general and spend most of the episode showing how it is relevant and parallels current events in the United States. Here are some scenes from the show I mentioned: Sinclair Shows Off Various Earth Belief Systems A Nightwatch Meeting (the relevant part starts at 1:00, if the link doesn't go there automatically) Delenn Defends Babylon 5 ISN Is Back On the Air Garibaldi Confronts Lochley Our next episode will be next week, April 10th, and will be about EOs that deal with MAGA nonsense. Immigration EOs and Two Examples of How Not to Resist
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are going to look at a bunch of executive orders or memoranda about immigration. But before we get to that, I address a couple of other topics. First, I talk about Chuck Schumer and 9 other Democratic Senators betraying the Democratic Party and the country by working with the Republicans on a truly horrific funding bill. I also talk about how Fetterman is better compared to Sinema than Manchin. Then, I turn to Jasmine Crockett and her use of ableist language against Greg Abbott and why we need to not use language like this when attacking people. Please listen carefully and consider your words and actions in the future. If you want to read the EOs, you can go to https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/ and look there. EOs- Government Agencies
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today we are going to look at some recent executive orders (EOs) that relate directly to government agencies. First, we name the orders and then we briefly discuss most of them. This is followed up with a more in-depth discussion of the ones I feel are the most important and why. I also take a brief detour to talk about Gov. Newsom's podcast and how I am not surprised he has devolved into being anti-trans. I wrote more about it here. There is an executive order that I have looked at on my Substack. You can find that article here. Executive Orders 101
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we have an introduction to executive orders before we look at ones that the seditious traitor has recently signed. We look at what they are, why they can be used, what they can be used for, and also talk about how they are used now differs from the past. We end by going over the schedule through the beginning of July. You can read my recent substack essay here. The Upcoming Season and the 2024 Elections
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! This is the first episode of the new season. Today, I am going to spend some time talking about my plans for this season and then I talk about the 2024 election. I look at some numbers and talk about why the election turned out the way it did. I end with some thoughts about journalists or news sites to follow (go to this thread for links). I mentioned a lot of places, and you can go to my Substack and see who I follow. Below, I am leaving some links to other podcasts that I find particularly enlightening: Unbiased Science The Downballot Decoding Fox News Outlawed The Anarchodox Podcast Chutzpod We will be back in 2 weeks to start our series on the recent executive orders. LGBTQ+ People Are Not Going Back
Welcome to this special episode of Queer PoliFaith. This special episode is based off of a Substack post by Julia Serano where she asked people with a platform to encourage people to contact politicians at all levels to tell them that we are keeping an eye on them and the queerphobic and transphobic laws they pass. I do have a concern where it comes to voting, so I spend a part of the episode detailing my concerns and thoughts. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I did want to lay out my own struggles as honestly as possible. We will be back with season 4 in early February. UMC General Conference with Mae Forrest Barnes
Welcome to the season finale of Queer PoliFaith! And do we have a special episode for you! Our guest today is Mae Forrest Barnes, who you may remember from our conversation about Dignitas Infinita in July. As I promised then, she is back on to talk about the 2020/2024 General Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC). Mae Forrest Barnes is a theologian and PhD candidate at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Her area of focus is in disability studies, science, bioethics, and gender studies. She is a former United Methodist pastor, now laity in the Episcopal Church, and is looking forward to finishing her doctorate so that she can become a professor of theology and ethics. She loves writing about numerous topics, including pop culture, literature, and more, which can be found on her blog on Substack, or on Twitter @dr_maeforrest. Mae starts us off by giving us some background about the governance of the UMC and what the General Conference is. Then she gets into some of the events that led up to this particular General Conference and to the formation of the Global Methodist Church. After that, she tells us about some of the important items that were agreed to in the General Conference. I found the whole conversation to be fun and utterly fascinating. As I said in the podcast, I did not grow up with church governance like this, so I mostly just sit back and listen to Professor Mae. We will be back with season 4 in late January or early February. Please keep an eye on social media for announcements about topics and when we will return. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Post-Election Thoughts and Reactions
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. I know I said I was going to do this episode next week, but given everything, I had to talk about this right away. Our next new episode will be, as previously announced, on Thanksgiving and will be my conversation with Mae about the UMC General Conference. In todays episode, I start off with the little bits of good news we have. Then I look at the numbers of people who voted for presidents in 2016, 2020, and 2024 and draw some conclusions. I also look at 4 battleground states that flipped back and forth in the three elections as well as some puzzling results in North Carolina. Department of State v. Munoz and Pre-Election Thoughts
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, we will start off by talking about the case Department of State v. Munoz, a case about whether or not a citizen has the right to have their non-citizen spouse become a citizen of the United States. Ultimately, this case is more about our broken immigration system and how the current majority is willing to curtail certain rights for disfavored groups. After the case, I give some pre-election thoughts. I talk about how awful the seditious traitor and the GOP are and how we need as many Democrats in power as possible. The Democrats are not perfect, but they are much better than the alternative. Our next episode will be on November 14th and will be my post-election thoughts. Grants Pass
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we are going to talk about the case City of Grants Pass v. Johnson et al. This case dealt with how cities or states deal with homeless people and whether barring them from camping in public spaces violated the Cruel and Unusual Puniushment Clause of the Constitution. Next week, we will be talking about the case Department of State v. Munoz. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. SEC v. Jarkesy
Welcome to Queer PoliFaith! Today, we are talking about the Supreme Court case SEC v. Jarkesy (2024). This is the last case we will look at that is part of the assault on the administrative state. As a part of this case, we delve into what an adninistrative law judge (ALJ) is because that is an important part of this case. After I discuss the case, I return to a topic I've talked about before: making elections purity contests. I want to make clear how making this election into a purity exercise will adversely affect many, many people in the US and abroad in some very awful ways. Ohio v. EPA
Welcome to this week's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we'll be talking about the case Ohio v. EPA. This is actually a consolidation of 4 cases, but generally only the first is ever listed. This case was asking the Supreme Court to issue an emergency stay of an EPA rule. I talk about the rules surrounding the issuance of a stay, some background of the case, and how this case fits into the larger assault on the administrative state. I also refer to this newsletter from Steve Vladeck's Substack. Our next episode will be about the case SEC v. Jarkesy, which is the final case we will be looking at that continues the theme of the assault on the administrative state. Corner Post and the Assault on the Administrative State
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today we are talking about the case Corner Post, Inc. v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. This case, when coupled with the Loper Bright case we talked about last episode, shows how the conservatives on the Supreme Court have decided to use the courts to launch an assault on the administrative state that has been brewing since at least Ronald Reagan's election in 1980. As a resulr, there is not a lot of time spent talking about the specifics of this case. Rather, while I do spend some time talking about the decisions, and read whole paragraphs from Justice Jackson's dissent, I spend more time looking at how this decision fits in with other aspects of the assault on the administrative state and how the conservatives on the Court seek to fashion the rules around what they prefer rather than longtime precedent and rules promulgated by executive agencies. Our next episode, which will be coming out on September 19th, will be about the case Ohio v. EPA. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Loper Bright v. Raimondo
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today's episode focuses on the case Loper Bright v. Raimondo which overruled the 40-year old Chevron doctrine for the flimisest of reasons. Thae case has ramifications beyond just administrative law because the Court seized power from people who had been granted the power by Congress and I want to place this decision in the context of how the right-wing members of the Court are trying to give themselves and like-minded judges power to overturn the will of the people as expressed in Congress. Listen for more details. Before I get to the case, I talk about some issues I've seen with the political Left dealing with purity. Yes, the same issues Billie and I talked about when we talked about fascism and Christian Nationalism (Part I here and Part II here) and her interview earlier in the year. It's worrisome and needs to be talked about. Our next episode will come out on September 5th and will be about the Corner Post case. Presidential Immunity Case
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we are starting our look at several SCOTUS decisions from their most recent session. Our first case has to do with Presidential Immunity. It was a doozy of a decision that really made no sense. Roberts tries to cloak his partisanship in high falutin and gauzy language about Consitutional principles. And Thomas writes a particularly bad concurrence. On the 22nd, we'll look at Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, a case that overturned another precedent that had been around for decades and was the target of the conservative movement and the GOP. Here is the CNN article I talked about where it was revealed how Roberts decided not to even try and save what little remains of the Supreme Court's legitimacy. Here are links to several Substack articles about the case or its effects: Your Questions About The Immunity Opinion The Spinelessness of John Roberts Roberts's majority backs Trump in finding an expansive presidential immunity The Supreme Court's Declaration of Independence — a few days early 91. Dignitas Infinita with Mae Forrest Barnes
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith! Today, I am talking with Mae Forrest Barnes about Dignitas Infinita, the document that the Catholic Church put out a few months ago. I talked about it here. Mae Forrest Barnes is a theologian and PhD candidate at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Her area of focus is in disability studies, science, bioethics, and gender studies. She is a former United Methodist pastor, now laity in the Episcopal Church, and is looking forward to finishing her doctorate so that she can become a professor theology and ethics. She loves writing about numerous topics, including pop culture, literature, and more, which can be found on her blog on Substack, or on Twitter @dr_maeforrest. The essay specifically about Dignitas Infinita is here. Mae and I start off with some general thoughts about the document and then we talk about specific sections specifically abortion, surrogacy, gender theory, and sex change. We talk about how the document does some wonderful things, but then gives itself a lot of trouble and causes a lot of painful messiness. Mae will be back later in the fall to talk about the UMC General Convention that took place this year. Our next episode, on August 8, will be about the Immunity Decision from the Supreme Court. Election Updates
Welcome back to Queer PoliFaith! Today we are talking about the Biden debate debacle and the assassination attempt on the seditious traitor. I start by talking about my plans for the rest of the season. Then we talk about the assassination attempt on the seditious traitor and the reactions to it. Then I spend most of the episode focused on Biden's dismal debate performance. I talk about some online critiques and what I think he should do. I also critique the media's obsessive coverage with this and contrast that with their lack of coverage of Project 2025 and the awfulness of the seditious traitor. Next week (yes, July 25), we will be back with an episode I am sure you'll love. I had a conversation with Mae Forrest Barnes about Dignitas Infinita. Redistricting
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we are talking about 2 redistricting cases: Cooper v Harris (2017) and Alexander v NAACP (2024). Although only a few years apart, these cases show how important Supreme Court nominations can be because a change of 3 seats allowed Alito to turn his 2017 dissent into a majority opinion in 2024. I also talk a little about corruption on the Supreme Court and a few justices who should be impeached due to their corruption and lack of judicial ethics. I know I called these "voting rights" cases in the episode, but I realized that is a bad descriptor and that "redistricting" is the better term. Can't just change a word here or there, so just changing the title and description to better fit the episode. We won't be back until at least sometime in August. Ideological Purity and Voting
Welcome to Queer PoliFaith. Today, I am going to talk about ideological purity and voting. I was inspired by a friend's Twitter post (which I read without naming them) as well as my own feelings about the subject. I talk about how ideology has damaged the Republican party and why we cannot let it damage the Democratic party and the nation as a whole. We look at a little history and at Senate rules as well. There is strong language and if that upset you, too bad. I ain't gonna apologize, but I will warn you. Our next episode will be about a few voting rights cases from the Supreme Court and then we will go on a break. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. About My Voting Process
Today's episode is on the shorter side. I decided to illuminate my process of choosing who I vote for in the primaries. I talk about how I winnow down my options, words or phrases I look out for, and how I make my final choice. I also talk about my vote in the presidential primary and why I made the choice I did. I also talk about anti-Semitism on the left and how it is somewhere where the far left and far right meet in absolutely disgusting ways. F bombs are dropped, so if that offends you, be prepared for a few around the 30 minute mark. And no, I won't apologize for them. I am not sure when the next episode will be out. I am hoping to talk with someone about the recent events in the UMC, and if I do, I will post that interview. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Dignitas Infinita
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today we are talking about the recently released document Dignitas Infinita (On Infinite Dignity) which is about the Catholic Church's view on human dignity and some current threats to that dignity. I start off explaining why I talk about documents from the Catholic Church and then look at the document section by section. We spend a good amount of time talking about different types of dignity and how they are defined. And then we look at some of the things the Church views as threats to human dignity. If you want to read the document, please go here. I am not sure what the next episode will be about, but please pay attention to the podcasts social media channels and I will let you know there. Christian Hegemony and Political Tactics
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we are going to talk about Christian hegemony and political tactics of the right using 2 recent pieces from Aaron Rupar's Substack, entitled Public Notice. The articles are from April 2nd and April 3rd. I've talked extensively in the past about how right-wing religion has affected the GOP and here we continue to look at that. We also look at how "white rage" has been used to get people to oppose policies that will help them, among other things. Here is a link to Project 2025, which is the topic of the April 3rd article. 14th Amendment and the 2024 Election
In today's episode, we are going to look at the 14th Amendment and how it is affecting the 2024 election via the case Trump v. Anderson. In addition to briefly looking at the 14th Amendment itself, we break down the decision with the help of Steve Vladeck, or more specifically, an article he published on his Substack page entitled: "70. The Shoddy Politics of Trump v. Anderson". In addition to examining the reasoning in the per curiam decision, we also look at how the Court's previous actions have caused it problems when it comes to this decision. I also explain why I agree with Steve Vladeck when he says that the judgment that Colorado could not exclude the seditious traitor from the ballot. IVF and Surrogacy
Welcome to today's episode of Queer Polifaith! Today, we are looking at the Alabama Supreme Court decision saying that eggs which have been fertilized for IVF implantation are children even if not implanted in a woman's uterus and the pope's statement regarding surrogacy that was a part of a larger speech to ambassadors to the Holy See. I place these in the larger context of the right's restrictions on reproductive rights and the attacks on queer people. I am not a bioethicist, so these opinions are my own. I have not studied these things extensively and so may be missing nuances. Just know that going in. If you are interested in these topics, I highly suggest Jessica Valenti's Abortion, Every Day newsletter. The newsletters tend to be long, but they are well worth reading. My Thoughts
Welcome to today's episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, I decided to just talk about some things I have seen that disturb me that we need to deal with, particularly on the political left. To sum it up, I make three points: Words mean things Obsession with ideological purity is a very bad thing We need to be willing to take what we can get now and come back for more later I reference the episodes with Billie about Facism and Christian Nationalism, so if you haven't listened to them, or if it's been a while, take the time to listen to them. Election 101
Welcome back to season 3 of Queer PoliFaith! We start off with a discussion about the future of the podcast. Then we start talking about the theme of the season: elections. We discuss the differences between primary and general elections and types of primary elections (including correcting a couple of errors I made on my voting episode!). I then talk about the history of political parties in the US and why a 3rd party is unlikely and end with a discussion about the Electoral College. Our next episode will be some personal thoughts and reflections from me about the dysfunction present in our politics and some things to keep an eye out for. Fiducia Supplicans
Welcome to this episode of Queer PoliFaith. Today, we will be talking about the declaration Fiducia Supplicans put out by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith from the Roman Catholic Church. There have been a lot of articles and people saying that this is a massive and good thing or that it is the first step for the church to become fully welcoming for queer people. Unfortunately, these are overselling what the declaration gives us. In this episode I: a. Discuss my background and how it may affect my analysis of the declaration b. Discuss levels of authority for Catholic documents (read this for more) c. Summarize the declaration, reading various important paragraphs and explaining them. When we get to section III, I read the entire thing and explain it paragraph by paragraph. d. Give my thoughts about the declaration (good and bad) and explain why I see it as not nearly as titanic a document as people claim. My thoughts are not the final thoughts, but I think that we need to not just look at this declaration through rose-colored glasses, but fit them into the larger pattern of how the Catholic Church has historically treated queer and trans people (and in this case, remarried people) and how you can make marginal changes but still be harmful at the core. I am not sure when our next episode will be. Keep an eye on the podcast's social media platforms for announcements.
