Crusade for Connor: We wanted to honour our mate
Connor Hogan was diagnosed with schizophrenia, anxiety and depression in 2019. In December 2022, he tragically took his own life.Since then, Connor’s mates have honoured who he was by bringing people together to raise money and awareness for schizophrenia research. What struck me most about this conversation was the amount of love I could see in these blokes’ eyes. It was clear Connor was a special person, and it was obvious he continues to live on in their thoughts.Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterised by a disconnection from reality, affecting how a person thinks, feels and behaves. In the research I did before this episode, I was almost intimidated by the disease and how it takes hold of the people it affects. The way the boys described the impact it had on Connor reminded me of one reason suicide can feel like such a taboo subject: because it is bloody confronting. But conversations like this matter. These fellas sharing their stories and honouring their mate’s legacy are helping shape the conversation around schizophrenia. They are giving people a blueprint they so wish they had. They are giving people a perspective they wish Connor had. This is a powerful conversation about loss, love, resilience and creating a future with zero blue-collar suicides. If this episode brings anything up for you, please reach out to someone you trust. In Australia, you can contact:Lifeline: 13 11 14Medicare Mental Health Centre Canberra: 1800 595 212Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636 or visit their website beyondblue.org.auFollow Crusade for Connor on Instagram

What has your body lived through? | Burnout, Identity, & THRIVE
Shannon Kara is an Occupational Therapist, Clinical Director and Doctoral Student based in Canberra, specialising in nature-based interventions for neurodivergent and intellectually disabled populations. Through her programs, including Nature for Life, and her connection with Running for Resilience, she blends evidence-based practice with lived experience of burnout and recovery. In this episode, we explore Shannon’s powerful story, from surviving domestic violence and professional burnout to developing the THRIVE framework through both research and real-world application. Her work sits at the intersection of rising burnout, anxiety, neurodiversity and our growing disconnection from nature, offering a practical and accessible pathway to regulate the nervous system. We unpack the six moves of THRIVE and how nature, movement and connection can help people shift from survival into something more sustainable and meaningful. Ultimately, this conversation bridges the gap between what we know helps and how people actually live, showing how identity, community and environment can reshape recovery.📞 Support ServicesDomestic Violence Crisis Support | https://whiteribbon.org.au/helplines/Medicare Mental Health Centre Canberra | 1800 595 212Lifeline | 13 11 14 (24/7 crisis support)Beyond Blue | 1300 22 4636 | https://www.beyondblue.org.au🔗 Connect with Running for Resilience🌐 Website: https://www.runningforresilience.com📸 Instagram: @runningforresilience 📘 Facebook: @runningforresilience 🏃 Strava: https://strava.app.link/eGHjt285jTb

The Research Behind Running for Resilience
What makes Running for Resilience more than just a run club?In this episode of the R4R Podcast, Ben Alexander sits down with Dr Joanna Wall Tweedie, Dr Andrew Flood and Dr Annaleise Naylor from the University of Canberra’s Research Institute for Sport and Exercise to unpack the research behind Running for Resilience and the role community, physical activity and social connection can play in mental health. What began as a simple idea, bringing people together to move, connect and talk, has now become the subject of academic research. Through more than 25 hours of interviews with Running for Resilience (R4R) participants, the University of Canberra (UC) research team has explored why people first come to R4R, why they keep coming back, and what makes the community feel safe, welcoming and meaningful. The conversation explores the “active ingredients” of R4R, including informal physical activity, peer support, psychological safety, mental health literacy, social identity and the powerful idea that people do not need to talk about their mental health in order to feel supported. This is a conversation about belonging, suicide prevention, community-led mental health support and what it really means to show up for yourself and others.Running for Resilience exists to save one life from suicide, as many times as possible, with the long-term goal of helping make the ACT suicide-free by 2033.

What if my Dad called Lifeline instead of me?
Just over 15 years ago, Matt checked his phone and heard a voicemail from his dad:“Hey Matt, I just want to let you know that I love you.”Those could have been the last words his dad ever said… they would have been some of the last thoughts he ever had.In preparing for this episode, Matt wondered what could have been if instead of calling him, his dad had picked up the phone to Lifeline. In this episode, Breeny and Benny A sit down with Carrie-Ann Leeson, CEO of Lifeline Canberra, to explore what actually happens when someone reaches that point — and what happens when they call. What we cover in this conversationWhat someone can expect when they call LifelineCarrie explains the process, the humanity, and the safety of crisis support… removing the mystery so more people feel able to reach out.The weight carried by Lifeline volunteersFrom the Lifeline Gala video to real stories from the phones, we explore the impact of Canberra’s volunteer force:– 200 volunteers in Canberra– 35,000 calls answered– 18,500 hours of support delivered– 4,500 callers experiencing suicidal thoughts– 450 callers in immediate danger, redirected to critical helpCarrie also reflects on her own time as a volunteer — and what it teaches you about people, pain, and hope.Changing the conversation around suicideCarrie is often quoted on this idea. You are enough | Bouncing Back | Heidi Prowse
What does “bouncing back” really mean after unimaginable loss?In part two of our conversation with Heidi Prowse OAM, we explore what life looks like after losing her husband, Andrew... and how she’s found new ways to move forward through grief, purpose, and service to others.Heidi shares how resilience isn’t about “getting over it,” but about learning to live with the ache… to say yes to coffee with a friend, to sing along in the car, to let the smallest moments stitch you back together. What happens when we stop treating mental health as a side conversation — and start seeing it as a community responsibility? In this episode, Matt Breen revisits the origins of Running for Resilience — born from the loss of his dad — and the gap it left in male role models and connection. From there, he’s joined by Menslink’s Ben Gathercole to explore how community, mentoring, and education can rewrite the story for young men across Canberra. The conversation weaves through powerful real-life stories — from Leesa Mountford’s “I Got You” initiative to Pip Seldon’s “Healthy Tradie Project” — before turning to some confronting truths:Tradies are six times more likely to die by suicide than in a workplace accident. This is the beginning of a two-part series. Lili Mooney: From Anorexia to Half Marathon Champion
Matt Breen sits down with Running for Resilience (R4R) community member Lili Mooney for a deeply honest conversation about anorexia, recovery, running, family, and the power of sharing your story.Lili first became part of the R4R story through our Meet the Runners newsletter, where she openly shared her experience of being diagnosed with anorexia at 15 and spending years in and out of treatment. That moment helped shape the way Running for Resilience told stories, creating space for more people in the community to speak honestly about mental health, struggle and recovery. In this conversation, Lili reflects on what it felt like to be a teenager living with an eating disorder, the shame and isolation that came with it, the impact it had on her family, and the long road back to feeling like herself again. She speaks openly about hospital treatment, calling Lifeline during one of her lowest moments, learning to rebuild her relationship with food and running, and finding strength through community.Lili also shares how running became healthy again, from returning through a Lifeline 5K fun run with her mum to becoming the Batemans Bay Half Marathon champion. This is a powerful episode about anorexia recovery, resilience, family support, mental health, and the reminder that you are not alone.
