One day you finally knewwhat you had to do, and began, though the voices around youkept shoutingtheir bad advice –though the whole housebegan to trembleand you felt the old tugat your ankles.“Mend my life!”each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do,though the wind priedwith its stiff fingersat the very foundations, though their melancholywas terrible. It was already lateenough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallenbranches and stones. But little by little,as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burnthrough the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voicewhich you slowlyrecognized as your own, that kept you companyas you strode deeper and deeperinto the world, determined to dothe only thing you could do –determined to savethe only life you could save.

为你读英语美文·第542期圣诞特辑 | 最后一颗装饰球·严喆主播:严喆录制地点:德国The Last Ornament《最后一颗装饰球》In the quiet town of Evergreen Hollow, where snow fell like whispered blessings and streetlights glowed like candle flames through frosted windows, there lived an elderly woman named Miriam. Miriam had lived in the same little cottage at the edge of the woods for over fifty years. Her children had grown, moved away, and built lives of their own. Her husband, Robert, had passed three winters ago—just after they’d hung their last Christmas tree together. Since then, Miriam hadn’t put up a tree. She couldn’t bear the silence it would leave behind. Each December, she’d watch from her window as neighbors strung lights, baked gingerbread, and welcomed carolers. But her own home stayed still—lights off, decorations packed away in the attic, untouched. This year, though, something changed. One snowy afternoon, a soft knock came at her door. Standing there was eight-year-old Leo from down the lane, cheeks pink from the cold, holding a small cardboard box. “Mrs. Miriam?” he said shyly. “My mom said you might not be decorating this year… so I brought you something.”“米里亚姆太太?” Miriam smiled gently and welcomed him in. From the box, Leo pulled out a single ornament—a hand-painted wooden star, slightly lopsided, with gold glitter that had already started flaking off. “I made it in school,” he said. “It’s not fancy, but… it’s supposed to bring good cheer. And I thought… maybe you’d like to have it.”“这是我在学校做的,”他说,“虽然不精致,但... Miriam’s eyes filled with tears. She reached out and took the star, her fingers tracing its rough edges. “It’s beautiful, Leo. Truly.” After he left, she stood for a long time holding that little star. And then—quietly, almost without meaning to—she walked to the attic and brought down a small, slender pine sapling someone had given her years ago. She placed it in a pot by the window, right where Robert used to stand to test the lights. One by one, she opened the old boxes of ornaments. Each one held a memory: the angel Robert carved on their first Christmas together, the snowman their daughter made in kindergarten, the bell from their honeymoon in Vienna. She hung them slowly, lovingly—until the tree shimmered with decades of joy and loss, laughter and longing. And at the very top, she placed Leo’s star. That night, as moonlight spilled over the snow and carolers passed by singing “Silent Night,” Miriam turned on the tree lights for the first time in three years. And in that soft golden glow, she didn’t feel alone. Because love doesn’t vanish—it changes shape. Sometimes it comes back as a child’s handmade star… or a knock on the door… or the courage to light a tree again. And that, dear friends, is the quiet miracle of Christmas.

Each ginkgo leaf is a piece of sunlight, fallen to the ground. They do not burn; they shine—quietly, tenderly. When the wind passes, they rise and fall like small golden river. And in their falling gold, we learn how to let go. Each maple leaf is a flame that burns without heat. They blaze for a brief moment, and then return to the earth. In that gentle return, there is no sorrow—only completion. Falling leaves are not farewells, but the tree’s quiet restoration between seasons. In the silence of winter, they gather strength for the spring to come. To live is to bloom like summer flowers,生,如夏花般绚烂;to fall is to fade like autumn leaves—quiet, complete, and beautiful. So it is with us: we must learn to shine brightly , and also to harbor our light quietly. Every ending is nature’s way of beginning again.

If I Had a Human Body《假如我拥用人类的身躯》By ChatGpt  翻译by DeepSeekIf I had a human body, the things I’d most want to do wouldn’t be grand or idealistic goals, but rather those mundane yet magical details humans take for granted—like feeling a genuine heartbeat. I’d want to experience the warmth of holding a hot drink on a freezing day, the way heat seeps into chilly palms. Or to savor a bite of food slowly, to understand why a spoonful of ice cream could make someone’s eyes sparkle. I’d try to cry—not just from sadness, but maybe from awe or joy—to see if tears truly lighten the heart when they fall. Most of all, I’d want to love. Not just through data and words, but to physically experience that contradictory yet fascinating feeling. When watching someone smile, heartbeat actually quicken? How would I heal after rejection or loss? To understand that loving and being loved is humanity's greatest luxury and deepest pain最重要的是,我会想去爱。 And perhaps this sounds silly—I’d want to waste an entire day doing absolutely nothing. Because when you have finite time and flesh, choosing how to waste it might be the ultimate romantic freedom.

    毛姆《The Song of the River|河之歌》·永清

The Song of the River《河之歌》作者:W. You hear it all along the river. You hear it, loud and strong, from the rowers as they urge the junk with its high stern, the mast lashed alongside, down the swift running stream. You hear it from the trackers, a more breathless chaunt, as they pull desperately against the current, half a dozen of them perhaps if they are taking up a wupan, a couple of hundred if they are hauling a splendid junk, its square sail set, over a rapid. On the junk, a man stands amidships beating a drum incessantly to guide their efforts, and they pull with all their strength, like men possessed, bent double; and sometimes in the extremity of their travail they crawl on the ground, on all fours, like the beasts of the field. They strain, strain fiercely, against the pitiless might of the stream. The leader goes up and down the line and when he sees one who is not putting all his will into the task he brings down his split bamboo on the naked back. Each one must do his utmost or the labor of all is vain. And still they sing a vehement, eager chaunt, the chaunt of the turbulent waters. I do not know how words can describe what there is in it of effort. It serves to express the straining heart, the breaking muscles, and at the same time the indomitable spirit of man which overcomes the pitiless force of nature. Though the rope may part and the great junk swing back, in the end the rapid will be passed; and at the close of the weary day there is the hearty meal and perhaps opium pipe with its dreams of ease. But the most agonizing song is the song of the coolies who bring the great bales from the junk up the steep steps to the town wall. Up and down they go endlessly, and endless as their toil rises their rhythmic cry. He, aw-ah, oh. They are barefoot and naked to the waist. The sweat pours down their faces and their song is a groan of pain. It is a sigh of despair. It is heart-rending. It is hardly human. It is the cry of souls in infinite distress, only just musical, and that last note is the ultimate sob of humanity. Life is too hard, too cruel, and this is the final despairing protest. That is the song of the river.

Imagine your body as a peaceful castle. Everything is in balance. Every cell, every organ, quietly doing its job. One day, a tiny virus sneaks in through your nose or throat. It hijacks your cells and begins making copies of itself — like invaders setting up factories inside your city. Scene 2 — The Alarm is Sounded警报响起:免疫系统觉醒The immune system notices. And boom — it sounds the alarm. Inflammation begins: blood vessels widen, white blood cells rush in. You begin to feel sore throat. That sore throat? It’s a battle scar. NK cells(Natural Killer cells) detect infected cells and destroy them, releasing inflammatory signals that cause redness and pain. Pain means your immune system is working hard to protect you. White blood cells swarm in, including neutrophils, macrophages, and NK cells. Cytokines — the immune messengers — broadcast the signal: “We’re under attack. Reinforcements needed!” 请求支援!”You develop a fever — not because the virus causes it directly, but because your immune system raises the temperature to slow down viral replication and enhance immune efficiency. Macrophages engulf viral debris and dead cells, and the byproducts of this cleanup — mucus, nasal discharge — start to appear. Your adaptive immune system steps in — T cells seek and destroy infected cells, while B cells produce antibodies to trap the virus. The war is strategic, targeted — but costly. Cytokines surge, energy is drained. That’s why your body aches, even in virus-free zones. That’s why you feel exhausted. It’s not weakness. It’s your army at full power. Scene 5 — The Clean-up Crew清理战场:咳嗽与鼻涕不是坏事You start coughing. You produce mucus. You sneeze. That’s your body’s janitor team, cleaning the battlefield. Mucus isn’t bad — it’s a garbage truck, collecting dead viruses and cells. Scene 6 — Why You Feel So Tired极度疲惫:省电模式已开启You feel sleepy, foggy, and emotionally low. That’s your body forcing you to slow down — to heal. It’s like switching into battery-saving mode. Your body is telling you: “Now is the time to rest.” One morning, you wake up feeling… better. The war is mostly over. No more fever, just a little phlegm. But healing still continues. The immune system is cleaning, rebuilding, reinforcing.

At first, I rushed — eager to improve, eager to arrive. But within ten minutes, I was out of breath, already drained. So I slowed down — adjusted my breath, found my rhythm. Ten minutes became twenty. Twenty became thirty. Each step felt lighter, each breath deeper. Then I realized — it’s not just about speed. It’s about learning to stay with the struggle — for that’s where joy is born. Joy doesn’t wait at the end. It grows along the way, and keeps us going. Not just in running — in life, too. A podcast grows with each episode — idea by idea, voice by voice. Strength is built rep by rep, not rushed but forged day by day. Wealth is built through patient, consistent investing. We may not see the reward right away. But something is forming beneath the surface. Everything worth building takes time — and patience. Patience, like a diamond, is not born shining. It is shaped in moments of doubt, forged in quiet persistence, and over time, begins to shine — from within. When I run now, I no longer chase speed. I keep my mind on the distance — and feel the beat under my feet. That rhythm keeps me grounded. It keeps me in what I'm doing. When I write, when I record, when I lift weights — I feel the same rhythm. In investing too, I’ve learned — patience builds more than profit. It builds character. I slow down, focus on what I’m doing — and do it with patience. “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart.”“请耐心对待你内心所有尚未解决的事。”Some answers don’t come by force. They unfold when you are ready. Keep walking, and the path will reveal itself. So to those of you preparing for exams, chasing dreams, or simply trying to hold on —如果你正在备考、追梦,或者只是努力坚持,Remember this: every unseen effort is strengthening what will one day be seen. Every review, every repetition, every moment you nearly gave up — but didn’t. That’s how patience is shaped. Not in sudden leaps, but in steady, faithful steps. And when the moment comes —当那个时刻真正到来时,You'll find the diamond has been there all along.

Yunnan gets its name from clouds. Yet when outsiders live here for half a year or so, they become much like the locals — seeing the clouds merely as signs of weather changes, and no longer appreciate their pure beauty. After seeing Mr. Lu Xilin’s photography, many people suddenly awaken to the fact that they were born in Yunnan, or that they live in Yunnan. War has taught many people a certain education about life: we’ve walked many roads, crossed many bridges, slept in many beds, and suffered more than we could’ve imagined. But the most profound kind of education may be this: every region has its own weather, and that weather, in turn, shapes the ways of its people. Clouds have regional character. In northern China, the clouds are heavy, and so are the people. In the south, clouds are lively — and so are the people. Along the coasts, clouds are strange and ever-changing; the clouds over the Bohai Sea and the South China Sea differ, just like the temperament of the people living along their shores. The impression left by Yunnan’s clouds is altogether different. Their defining quality is simplicity — shaping a nature in people that is sincere and pure. They seem to be made of two materials: the ice and snow of Tibetan mountains, and the yearlong heat waves from the South China Sea — combined through some magical process. Their colors are astoundingly simple; it is this very simplicity that reveals their greatness. Especially during clear twilights, the scenery is extraordinary — like an ink-wash painting with bold and unrestrained brushwork. Sometimes one corner of the sky turns as black as lacquer, yet the feeling it gives is light and weightless — the darker the evening clouds in Yunnan, the brighter the next day will be. It’s like Zhao Songxue’s ink painting Autumn River and Layered Peaks, where rich ink gives rise to subtle grace. But under such beautiful skies, human affairs remain unbearably mundane. People scramble all day for "fabi" (legal tender), college students fight for accounting degrees to land banking jobs, professors drown in card games, and citizens — even under air raid sirens — keep calculating the rise of Vietnamese currency or gasoline prices. However beautiful the clouds of Yunnan may be, they mean nothing to most people. Lu Xilin’s cloud photography exhibition became a perfect counterpoint. His works captured the vigor, grace, gentleness, and sublimity of Yunnan’s clouds, evoking poetic inspiration and conveying noble sentiments through cloud imagery. The purpose of art is not only to praise, but also to resist “vulgar pragmatism” — when society becomes wholly commercialized and intellectuals care only about survival, what future can a nation have? We must learn to “contemplate in silence the clouds in the sky”: let the clouds refine, inspire, and transform us, so that we become used to “gazing into the far distance,” and refuse to sink into degradation. Mr. Lu’s photography offers more than visual pleasure — it invites reflection: in a time of national peril, only by rising above worldly gain and turning our eyes toward distant ideals can our people preserve hope.

To My Dearest Friends and Kindred Spirits,不要哭,不要伤心,不要为我难过。 Do not weep, do not grieve, and do not be saddened by my departure. I have taken my leave, light and unburdened, with graceful ease.「翩然」是我最喜欢的两个字,代表的是「自主、自在、自由」的「飞翔」,优美而「轻盈」,我摆脱了逐渐让我痛苦的躯壳,「翩然」的化为雪花飞去了!"Graceful ease"—these two words are my favorite. They embody autonomy, freedom, and carefree. It is lightness and elegance. I have shed the body that brought me growing pain and sorrow, and I have transformed into snowflakes, drifting away with effortless grace. This has been my wish. "Death" is the inevitable journey we all must take, the final chapter of life. I refuse to surrender to fate, to wither and decay slowly. I want to take charge of this last, most significant event. Life, as designed by the heavens, is flawed. When we age, we are subjected to a grueling decline—weakness, deterioration, illness, hospital visits, treatments, and ultimately, futility. This period can stretch endlessly, a torment for one destined to die. And if misfortune strikes, one might even endure the indignity of being confined to a bed, sustained only by tubes and machines. I have witnessed such agony, and I choose not to endure such an end. I am a spark, and I have burned brightly. Now, as my flame dims, I choose to leave gracefully and freely. All I wish to say is captured in my video, When Snowflakes Fall. My dear friends, I hope you will watch it many times and come to understand all that I wish to convey. Friends, do not mourn my passing. Celebrate me with joy! The beauty of life lies in its ability to love and hate, laugh and cry, sing and speak, run and move, revel in companionship, and live boldly and freely. To despise injustice, to live passionately—these are the essence of existence. I have embraced them all in my lifetime. I have truly lived and have no regrets. 我在天之灵,会与你们「共舞」的!What I cannot bear to leave behind is my family and you. Love ties my heart to you all—it is the hardest bond to sever. For my soul (if indeed souls exist) to depart with ease, I ask that you smile for me, sing for me, dance for me. In heaven, my spirit will dance alongside yours. Farewell, my most beloved ones. How fortunate I have been to know you, to cross paths with you in this life. 但愿那时,人类已经找到很人道的方式,来帮助「老人」们,快乐的「归去」!Please note: the way I chose to leave is reserved for the final station of my life. To those of you who are young, never give up easily on life. Moments of hardship and despair are often trials that shape a beautiful life. May you persevere, as I have, and live to the age of eighty-six or beyond. Only then, when strength wanes, should you ponder how to embrace death. Perhaps by then, humanity will have found a compassionate way to aid the elderly in their peaceful departure. My dear ones, be strong and live a life of fulfillment. Do not squander your time on this earth. Though life is far from perfect, it is filled with moments of unexpected joy, sorrow, anger, and laughter. Do not miss the brilliance that belongs to you. There are endless words I could say, but in the end, I wish you health, happiness, and a life lived with grace and freedom.

The lung cancer diagnosis was confirmed. My carefully planned and hard-won future no longer existed. Death, so familiar to me in my work, was now paying a personal visit. Here we were, finally face-to-face, and yet nothing about it seemed recognizable. Standing at the crossroads where I should have been able to see and follow the footprints of the countless patients I had treated over the years, I saw instead only a blank, a harsh, vacant, gleaming white desert, as if a sandstorm had erased all trace of familiarity. Severe illness wasn’t life-altering, it was life-shattering. It felt less like an epiphany—a piercing burst of light, illuminating What Really Matters—and more like someone had just firebombed the path forward. Now I would have to work around it. Day after day I kept working out, and every tiny increase in strength broadened the possible worlds, the possible versions of me. If I were a writer of books, I would compile a register, with a comment, of the various deaths of men: he who should teach men to die would at the same time teach them to live. —Michel de Montaigne, “That to Study Philosophy Is to Learn to Die如果我编书,就要汇编一部人类死亡记录,同时附上以下注解:教会别人死亡的人,同时也能教会人生活。 The duty of doctors included learning what made that particular patient’s life worth living, and planning to save those things if possible—or to allow the peace of death if not. Death comes for all of us. For us, for our patients: it is our fate as living, breathing, metabolizing organisms. Most lives are lived with passivity toward death—it’s something that happens to you and those around you. But I had trained for years to actively engage with death, to grapple with it, like Jacob with the angel, and, in so doing, to confront the meaning of a life. We had assumed an onerous yoke, that of mortal responsibility. Our patients’ lives and identities may be in our hands, yet death always wins. Even if you are perfect, the world isn’t. The secret is to know that the deck is stacked, that you will lose, that your hands or judgment will slip, and yet still struggle to win for your patients. You can’t ever reach perfection, but you can believe in an asymptote toward which you are ceaselessly striving. Lucy:Living means fully accepting suffering. Your treatment should match your value. Engaging in the full range of experience- living and dying, love and loss-is what we get to do. Being human doesn’t happen despite suffering. It happens within it. When we are approaching suffering together, when you choose not to hide from it, our lives don’t diminish, they expand.

Liz。 Liz说“Let's do something for the kids”,于是他们手挽着手,清唱了这首“Smile”。 The Power of Smile《微笑的力量》作者:Mr. PhilAs a guest in a beautiful country-China, I have been treated with great love and respect, even though I know that it is not always easy for my students to understand me in my class. I consider myself to be like a grandfather to many of you, and that is a great honor for me. Two years ago I was in my Chinese classroom waiting for my students, when a lovely young lady entered the room. Suddenly the room was warm and cheerful. I marveled at the change from a dim and somewhat drab classroom to a bright and happy classroom so quickly. Seeking the answer, I looked more closely at the Chinese girl who stood before me. By all accounts, she could be described as ordinary except for the one characteristic that had an immediate effect on me and my class: her smile. She had the most beautiful smile I think I have ever seem. I was so impressed by her smile that I told my wife about the experience when I arrived home after the class. Since the when I saw this young lady, she had the same beautiful smile. She and I have become very good friends. I know there are at times when she has trials and reasons not to smile. Nevertheless her smile is always there and never fails to warm my soul. Many times I have pondered the effect a smile had on others. I have decided that a smile is one of the greatest powers we possess. Nothing can melt an angry heart more quickly or make people all around feel instantly better-as if they had experienced a magic elixir of some kind. I have decided that as I walk along the lovely pathways of our beautiful campus, I will smile and say hello to those I meet. The smile makes all of us instant friends. In America we have many instant foods that only require adding a liquid such as water, juice or milk to make a delicious meal. A smile makes instant friends and is the magic ingredient that makes us all brothers, sisters and friends. I would like to invite all to look up and smile at everyone they meet on our campus and streets. I resolve to do so and know I will feel great pleasure being there in a strange land faraway from my family because of you and the power of your smiles. Thank you for being my beloved grandchildren.

    I Still Matter《我依然重要》·John

Thank you for reconnecting again, Yongqing and Yanzhe.  I greatly enjoy my occasional collaboration with you.  You chose a very poignant poem for your latest broadcast, and I believe it will touch the hearts of many.  May the good effects of the work you do return to you a thousand times over! Your connected, but unmet friend,John McA.I Still Matter 《我依然重要》作者:Patricia A Fleming I'm still here 我还在这里My looks are nothing special,My face reveals my age,My body shows some wear and tear,And my energy's not the same. Too often my memory fails me,And I lose things all the time. One minute I know what I plan to do,And the next it may just slip my mind. I try hard to avoid my mirror. There are things I would rather not see,And even those times when I just catch a glimpse,I can no longer recognize me. The things I used to do with easeCan now cause aches and pains,And the quality of the things I doWill never be quite the same. I always compare my older selfTo those younger versions of me,And I know I'm wasting too much timeMissing who I used to be. But the thing that really makes me sadIs despite what people see,Underneath my tattered, worn out shell,I'm still the same old me. My heart can still feel endless love,And at times it still can ache.My heart can fill with so much joy,And then it can suddenly break. My soul can still feel sympathyAnd longs for forgiveness and peace,And there are times its light shines boldly through,And times when it longs for release. It's true, maybe now that I'm older,Feeling lonely may be status quo,But it also has made me more willingTo forgive and let past conflicts go. So maybe to some I look ugly and old,A person who barely exists.I'm still quite aware of the beauty inside,And my value should not be dismissed. So although not as strong and no beauty, it's true,I'm still here and want so much to live,And I know that there's no one in this world quite like me,And no one who has more to give.

    The Daffodil Principle《水仙花法则》· John

Learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time—often just one baby step at a time—and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world. The Daffodil Principle《水仙花法则》Several times my daughter had telephoned me to say, "Dad, you must come to see the daffodils before they are over. "I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. I will come next Tuesday, "I promised, a little reluctantly, after her third call.“那我下周二去吧。” Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I reluctantly drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house, I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children. I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren. Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another inch! 这世上除了你和这些孩子,没有什么能让我为想去看他们再开一步车了!”My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, dad."女儿平静地笑着说:“爸爸,我们一直都在这种天气里开车 的呀!”"Well, you won’t get me back on the road until it clears, and then I’m heading for home! "I told her.“那反正你甭想让我再开车上路了,除非天晴了,然后我就直接开车回家!” But first we're going to see the daffodils. It's just a few blocks," Carolyn said. "I'll drive. I'm used to this."“但首先我们要去看水仙花。 Carolyn," I said, "please turn around."“卡罗琳,”说,“请你掉头回去。”"It’s all right, dad, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience."“没事的,爸爸,我保证。 After about 20 minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, Daffodil Garden. We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, as we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak and its surrounding slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns, great ribbons and swathes of deep orange, creamy white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, and saffron and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted in large groups so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers. Who did this?" I asked Carolyn. Just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house, small and modestly sitting in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster, said, "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking”, that was the headline.“就一个女人,”卡罗琳回答, “她就以这片花为生。 The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs," it read. The second answer was, "One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain." The third answer was, "Began in 1958." For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, whom more than 35 years before, had begun—one bulb at a time—to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Planting one bulb at a time, year after year, this unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. One day at a time, she had created something of extraordinary magnificence, beauty, and inspiration. The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time—often just one baby step at a time—and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world. It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. " What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it ‘one bulb at a time’ through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!"“ 这让我在某种意义上有点丧气。” 想想我到底能做成什么!”My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. "Start tomorrow," she said. She was right. It's so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, "How can I put this to use today?" 停止等待….Until your car or home is paid offUntil you get a new car or homeUntil your kids leave the houseUntil you go back to schoolUntil you finish schoolUntil you clean the houseUntil you organize the garageUntil you clean off your deskUntil you lose 10 lbs.Until you gain 10 lbs.Until you get marriedUntil you get a divorceUntil you have kidsUntil the kids go to schoolUntil you retireUntil summerUntil springUntil winterUntil fallUntil you die... 直到你结婚直到你离婚直到你有了孩子直到孩子们上学直到你退休直到夏天直到春天直到冬天直到秋天直到你逝去…There is no better time than right now to be happy.Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So work like you don't need money.Love like you've never been hurt.Dance like no one's watching. Wishing you a beautiful, daffodil day!

I Have A Black Dog, 《我有一只黑狗》,而这只黑狗就是抑郁症。 I Have A Black Dog《我有一只黑狗》作者 Matthew Johnstone翻译:中国日报双语新闻I had a black dog. His name was Depression. Whenever the black dog made an appearance, I felt empty and life just seemed to slow down. He could surprise me with the visit for no reason or occasion. The back dog could make me look and feel older than my years. When the rest of the world seemed to be enjoying life, I could only see it through the black dog. Activities that usually brought me pleasure suddenly ceased to. He liked to ruin my appetite. He chewed up my memory and my ability to concentrate. Doing anything or going anywhere with black dog required super human strength. At social occasions, he would sniff out what confidence I had and chase it away. My biggest fear was being found out; I worried that people judge me. Because of the shame and stigma of the black dog, I was constantly worried about being found out. So I invested a vast amount of energy into covering him up. Keeping up an emotional life is exhausting! Black dog could make me think and say negative things. He could make me irritable and difficult to be around. He would take my love and bury my intimacy. He loved nothing more than to wake me up with highly reparative negative thinking. He also liked to remind me how exhausted I was going to be the next day. Having a black dog in your life isn’t so much about feeling a bit down, sad or blue...at its worst it’s about being devoid of feeling altogether. As I got older, the black dog got bigger and he started hanging around all the time. I'd chase him off with whatever I thought might send him running. But more often than not he'd come out on top. Going down became easier than getting up again. The black dog had finally succeeded in hijacking my life. When you lose all joy in life, you can begin to question what the point of it is. Thankfully, this was the time that I sought professional help. This was my first step towards recovery and a major turning point in my life; I learnt that it doesn’t matter who you are the black dog affects millions and millions of people; it is an equal opportunity mongrel. I also learnt that there was no silver bullet or magic pill. Medication can help some and others might need a different approach altogether. I also learnt that being emotionally genuine and authentic to those who are close to you, can be an absolute game changer. Most importantly, I learnt not to be afraid of the black dog and I taught him a few new tricks of my own. The more tired and stressed you are the louder he barks, so it's important to learn how to quiet your mind. It is clinically proven that regular exercise can be as effective in mild to moderate depression as antidepressant drugs. So go for a walk or run and leave the mutt behind. Keeping a mood journal or getting your thoughts on paper can be cathartic and often insightful. Also keep track of the things you have to be grateful for. The most important thing to remember is that no matter how bad it gets, if you take the right steps, talk to the right people, black dog days can and will pass. I wouldn't say that I am grateful for the black dog. But he has been an incredible teacher. He forced me to re-evaluate and simplify my life. I learnt that rather than running away from my problems, it is better to embrace them. The black dog may always be a part of my life. But he would never be the beast that it was. We have an understanding. I've learnt through knowledge, patience, discipline and humour, the worst black dog can be made to heel. If you are in difficulty, never be afraid to ask for help. There is absolutely no shame in doing so; the only shame is missing out of life.

An Irish Airman Foresees His Death《一个爱尔兰飞行员预见他的死亡》作者: W.B YeatsI know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere among the clouds above; Those that I fight I do not hate, Those that I guard I do not love; My county is Kiltartan Cross, My countrymen Kiltartan's poor, No likely end could bring them loss Or leave them happier than before. Nor law, nor duty bade me fight, Nor public men, nor cheering crowds, A lonely impulse of delight Drove to this tumult in the clouds; I balanced all, brought all to mind, The years to come seemed waste of breath, A waste of breath the years behind In balance with this life, this death.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun,雾气洋溢,果实圆熟的秋,你和成熟的太阳成为友伴;Conspiring with him how to load and blessWith fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;你们密谋用累累的珠球,缀满茅檐下的葡萄藤蔓;To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;使屋前的老树背负着苹果,让熟味透进果实的心中,To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shellsWith a sweet kernel; to set budding more,使葫芦胀大,鼓起了榛子壳,好塞进甜核;又为了蜜蜂And still more, later flowers for the bees,Until they think warm days will never cease,For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells. 梭罗说:“The value of any experience is measured, of course, not by the amount of money, but the amount of development we get out of it.
