Ep. 89: Imposter syndrome, self-sabotage, & still going after what you want...with Omaira
We're back at Oakland Podcast Studio with one of my besties and a returning guest, Omaira, for a very real conversation about imposter syndrome...what it looks like in our actual lives and how we’re learning to move through it. From building her vending machine business in the Bay Area to me growing this podcast while working full-time, we talk about the quiet ways we both downplay our wins and question whether we belong in the rooms we’ve worked hard to be in.We unpack imposter syndrome as a “cognitive distortion,” share personal stories about internal dialogue (“I’m just a wannabe podcaster…”), and talk about the shame and cultural pressure that can make it hard to admit you’re struggling. We also get practical: naming imposter syndrome in the moment, shifting our physical state, using accountability buddies, exploring EMDR, and leaning on faith and spirituality when our brains feel especially loud.If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Who am I to do this?” this episode will help you feel seen...and remind you that doubt doesn’t get the final say.Ep. 12: Going inward - handling loss & grief, health scares, & life's curveballs w/my friend OmairaBay Area EMDR therapist, Natalie KiffJordan Peterson on how to overcome imposter syndromeWhat's in a name? Ep. 87: Bigger than basketball - adoption, identity, and “stacking days” with Coach Stevie Johnson
I sit down with my friend and former kiddo coach, Stevie Johnson, an East Bay basketball skills trainer and founder of One Thru Five Academy. We talk about why his work is “bigger than basketball” and how he coaches with a holistic lens - caring about what’s happening at home, in school, and with friends just as much as what happens on the court.Stevie shares his nontraditional path in hoops, his adoption story, and what it was like navigating identity and belonging while being raised by multiple families in very different environments. He opens up about faith, resilience, and his mantra of “stacking days” as a way to build skills, character, and confidence over time. We dig into the role of coaches and mentors, how he reads kids’ energy the moment they walk into the gym, and the intentional ways he uses routines, humor, and simple social habits to help them grow as people, not just as players. Talking with Stevie, a truly awesome and resilient person and coach, taught me a lot about the importance of discipline and grit. It's conversations like this that help all the parents, coaches, adoptees, adoptive and foster families, and anyone trying to turn adversity into purpose feel less alone in their lives as they pursue their goals...one stacked day at a time. This episode of Adventures in Adversity is sponsored by Divini, a honey-based kombucha tea.Visit LiveDivini and use discount code Breanne10 at checkout for a discount! Ep. 86: From Empire Scottsdale GM to a run for Arizona State Senate, LD8 - Logan Walton’s wild ride
I sit down with Logan Walton, Arizona State Senate candidate and Empire Scottsdale GM, to talk about service, risk, and what happens when you actually follow that little nudge to do something different with your life. We talk about Logan started with late nights as a Scottsdale door host to a Senate run in LD8 in the state of Arizona this year. He shares how burnout, big pivots, and even online trolls (yep, he has them, too!) have all shaped the adventure he’s on now. Follow Logan for Arizona on InstagramWe get into how a single DM about a bar build-out turned into his role building culture at Empire Scottsdale, a boutique coworking space and social club, proudly located in Scottsdale, Arizona. Follow Empire Scottsdale on InstagramWe also talk about why he believes so deeply in bringing back real civic dialogue, and what he’s learned going up against WNBA-level talent on the Phoenix Mercury practice squad. If you’ve ever looked at your “stable” job and thought, “I can’t do this forever,” this conversation is your reminder that you’re one message, one ask, one brave step away from a different path.*This episode of Adventures in Adversity is sponsored by DIVINI, a honey-based sparkling kombucha tea.*Visit LiveDivini and use discount code *Breanne10* at checkout for a discount! Ep. 80: From military grit, to Mama, to mercy & self-love w/Veteran & Empowerment Coach Dielle Luster
In this episode, I sit down with Army Veteran, Empowerment Coach, Host, & speaker Dielle Luster to talk about what it really looks like to walk through adversity with honesty, faith, and community. And we laugh...a lot! It's hard not to with Dielle's infectious energy.Follow Dielle on InstagramSubscribe to her YouTube channelFrom the discipline and “face it head on” mindset she learned in the military to the tenderness of mercy, vulnerability, and self-love, Dielle’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s okay to not be okay...and that we’re all worth the save.We talk about the messy middle seasons: separation, shifting identities, and learning to let go of control when life doesn’t follow the plan you had in your head. Dielle shares how prayer became less of a performance and more of a raw, ongoing conversation with God, and how experiencing God in simple, everyday moments changed the way she sees herself and others. We also dig into her transition into empowerment coaching - how her desire to help others heal grew out of her own battles with negative self-talk, emotional pain, and starting over. Writing becomes a form of therapy in this conversation: a way to process grief, name hard emotions, and begin the work of self-forgiveness and spiritual growth. If you’ve ever felt like you had to be “strong” all the time, this one is for you. Dielle’s story is a masterclass in military grit meets mercy, in learning to embrace vulnerability as strength, and in finding your people - the community that reminds you “you can’t quit” when everything in you wants to tap out. You’ll hear us talk about:Growing up in the military and how “run toward the fear” became a life lessonLife after service: identity shifts, separation, and learning who you are outside the uniformHow community and friendship hold you when relationships get complicatedWhy vulnerability is not weakness, and how it opens the door to real healingPrayer as a tool for emotional processing, not perfectionExperiencing God in the everyday, not just the “big” spiritual momentsThe difference between sacrifice and mercy in your spiritual journeyLetting go of control and trusting God’s plan when nothing makes senseHow empowerment coaching became a calling born from her own adversityUsing writing as therapy for emotional healing and self-discoveryThe hard but holy work of self-forgiveness and talking back to negative self-talkWhat it means to be “yoked with God” in real life, not just in theoryWhy everyone, no matter their past, is worth the save

I move quickly through Seasons 1 and 2, sharing what each guest taught me and how those lessons changed the way I see life.Timestamps00:00–02:30 Why I’m doing this episode, what Seasons 1–2 meant to me, and a shout‑out to my first 50 guests.02:30–08:00· Early guests: cancer, gratitude games, building a personal board of directors, and stuffing emotions vs. facing them.08:00–16:00· Stoicism, therapists as humans, first responders, poetry as healing, and redefining disability and strength.16:00–24:00· Job loss, humor in adversity, BRCA and preventative surgery, and the episode on narcissistic abuse that changed my life.24:00–32:00 Boxing and faith, grief and working in tech, best‑friend episodes, in‑person comedy chaos, and miscarriage honesty.32:00–40:00 · Vision loss double feature, kindness at work, parenting a blind daughter, trauma retreats, and escaping domestic abuse.40:00–48:00 · Coma and the STEP method, prison and accountability, suicide loss and “carrying Sam’s light,” and becoming messy on purpose.48:00–56:00· Narcissists at work, early childhood education and disability, losing 200 pounds, and building brighter futures for foster kids.56:00–End · Faith‑based counseling, hospice musical, spiritual wake‑up calls, adoptee journeys, addiction and psychedelics, undercover police work, alcohol recovery, medical breakthroughs, survival memoirs, and young voices on mental health and resilience.Key takeawaysGratitude is a survival skill, not a cliché. From Margot playing the “gratitude game” in a hospital bed to others finding tiny things to thank God for, gratitude kept people alive in their darkest hours. You need a “board of directors” for your life. Anita’s idea of trusted people who tell you the truth in hard seasons has changed how I think about support and decision‑making.Unfelt feelings don’t disappear; they relocate. Conversations about grief, tumors, chronic pain, addiction, and nervous system trauma showed me how often the body keeps the score when we try to outrun our stories.Victimhood and adversity are not the same thing. From Ryan’s layoff to Marines, cops, and survivors of abuse, a common thread was refusing to stay in “why me?” and instead asking “what’s my next step?"Stoicism and faith can coexist. Guests like Brian and Parker reminded me that you can practice stoic discipline and cling to God or purpose at the same time.Laughter really is medicine. - Episodes with Josh, Brianna, Meg, and Nick proved that comedy and chaos can sit right next to miscarriages, job loss, and parenting meltdowns.Disability and blindness are spectrums, not boxes. Guests living with cerebral ataxia, degenerative eye disease, and vision loss expanded my understanding of ability, independence, and dignity.Narcissistic abuse is real, insidious, and nameable. Professor Sam Vaknin, workplace conversations on narcissists, and survivors of domestic abuse gave language to my own story and many listeners’ experiences.Trauma lives in the nervous system, but it’s not the end of the story. Therapists, adoptees, addiction counselors, and trauma specialists helped me see healing as both messy and absolutely possible.Telling the truth saves lives. From the adoptee who stopped a listener from ending his life to families speaking about suicide and addiction, honest storytelling is literally life‑saving.

****This episode of Adventures in Adversity is sponsored by DIVINI, a honey-based kombucha tea: https://livedivini.com/ -- Use code Breanne10 at checkout for a discount!****In this episode, I talk with the incredible Roseanne Mayer about her memoir and her life behind it: Bones Beneath the Prairie: A Memoir of SurvivalRoseann grew up in the oil fields of West Texas, surviving a 20–year marriage marked by narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, spiritual manipulation, and financial control, and finally finding the courage to leave with no safety net. We get into the “bedpost incident” that became her breaking point, the shame and silence that kept her and her 3 children stuck for decades, and how little language or support existed in the church when all of this was happening. We also go there on the messy middle: the complicated relationship that helped her feel safe enough to leave, the years of anger and nervous-system chaos that followed, and the unexpected ways God met her anyway. This eventually led her into a healthy, loving marriage and, now, a calling to put her story into the hands of women in shelters and hidden situations everywhere. If you’re quietly Googling terms, hiding your digital footprint, or wondering if what you’re living through “counts” as abuse, I hope this conversation helps you feel seen, a little less alone, and reminds you that where you are right now does not have to be where you stay.Register to receive FREE copies of Roseann's bookSubmit your request here*If your ministry, group, shelter, safe home, or program supports women walking through crisis, abuse, coercion, spiritual manipulation, trauma recovery, or homelessness—we would be honored to serve your work.*Tell Roseann how many copies your ministry, shelter, group, or safe home needs.Once added, donors will be able to send you books directly through Amazon.HELP IS AVAILABLE FOR WOMEN AND MEN LIKE YOU*National Domestic Violence Hotline: Domestic Violence Support*Everyone deserves relationships free from domestic violence. Ep. 58: Why I chose to stay & heal out loud from narcissistic abuse #SuicidePreventionMonth
What does it mean to choose hope after deep pain?September is #SuicidePreventionMonth—a reminder to cut through the surface and talk honestly about mental health. As reported by the World Health Organization, 720,000 people take their own lives per year.-Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds.-73% of suicides occur in low and middle-income countries-The reasons for suicide are multifaceted, influenced by social, cultural, biological, psychological, and environmental factors present across the life-course.-For every suicide, there are many more people who attempt suicide. A prior suicide attempt is an important risk factor for suicide in the general population. These stats are heartbreaking...and alarming...and we have to talk about them, BEFORE we lose more people.I’ll never forget when a classmate died by suicide in college during my senior year. Suddenly, everything people kept bottled up—grief, confusion, guilt—was right there in the open. 2003 Harvard Crimson tribute "Friends Remember 'Beautiful & Vibrant' Smith - May she rest in peaceIt was a harsh wake-up call to just how much pain goes unseen, how many of us are fighting battles no one notices, and how real the impact is when someone’s gone.In this episode of Adventures in Adversity, I open up about college experiences with suicide and trauma, as well as an experience my family had last year with someone we lost. I talk about surviving narcissistic abuse, dealing with loss, and what it’s really like to try to put your life back together after everything falls apart.Learning about suicide in my own life and through the lives of my guests on this podcast has changed the way I look at others and myself. Hearing about suicide for the first time didn’t just make me aware; it showed me how easily pain gets missed and how complicated life can get before someone finally asks for help. These are the hard conversations—but silence does more damage. Ep. 56: Ret. Marine K9 Handler Alfred Brenner on “Surviving w/Grief” - His book on war, service, & healing
In this episode of Adventures in Adversity, I'm honored to sit down with Retired Sergeant Alfred Brenner, a true American hero whose courage, sacrifice, and devotion to our nation serve as a powerful reminder of what it means to wear the uniform. Our candid conversation dives into the emotional journey of writing his book: Surviving with Grief: The Story of How a Marine and His Dog Survived the Everyday Battles of War. ***BUY HIS BOOK ON AMAZON***MORE INFO ON ALFRED'S WEBSITE***Follow @sgtbrenner on Instagram***Connect with Alfred on LinkedInAs a retired Marine Corps K9 Handler, Alfred wrote about his experience being deployed in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, on October 24, 2010, while searching a compound, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated. His K9 partner, Grief, was killed instantly. The blast caused severe injuries to Alfred's arms, and he was temporarily blinded. This book is a testament to the courage they both showed in the face of unimaginable adversity as a Purple Heart recipient. 💜Alfred shares with me the difficult journey of transitioning from military to civilian life, and the extraordinary bond he shared with his military working dog, Grief—a partner who was more than just a companion, but a lifeline on the battlefield. Conversations like this reaffirm my commitment to honoring and supporting the veterans who safeguard our freedoms, along with acknowledging the families and service animals who stand beside them. Their stories are a reminder of the sacred duty we all bear to remember and uplift our nation’s heroes when they return home.In opening up about his personal struggles and triumphs, Alfred shows how important it is to embrace grief, honor fallen friends, and seek healing through faith, community, and hope. I’m proud to support Alfred’s mission and encourage everyone who believes in our military community to read his inspiring memoir. Ep. 54: Jim Serrano's courageous journey through adoption, abuse, & redemption...his healing path
I sit down with Jim Serrano for an honest, unfiltered conversation about how adversity can shape—and remake—us. As an adoptee at 6 months old, Jim faced adversity early on in life.He brings us into his story, letting us feel the weight of childhood trauma, the confusion of searching for belonging, and the raw reality of being both lost and hopeful at the same time. Nothing here is sugarcoated: Jim’s journey asks what it means to face pain, name it, and let faith help chart a new path forward.Jim’s quest to find his biological parents brings us to the messy truth of complex family and forgiveness—not the Instagram highlight reel, but the struggles, boundaries, and real moments spent longing for connection. Through sharing his experience as a victim of sexual abuse as a child from the ages of 9 to 11, we’re reminded that being seen and valued takes tremendous courage.Storytelling and writing became Jim’s way through the storm. His vulnerability isn’t just a gift to listeners—it’s how he’s healing, too. Jim shows why sharing isn’t weakness, why turning pain into purpose unlocks hope, and why mentorship starts with honest conversations about what we’ve lived through. This episode is a call to break the cycles that hold us back—to choose growth, boundaries, faith, and full-on self-care practices like Muay Thai. Ep. 50: Building brighter futures for foster kids with Fostering Wishes founder Sabine Lemmo
This week on Adventures in Adversity, I had the privilege of sitting down with Sabine Lemmo, the passionate founder of Fostering Wishes—a nonprofit bringing hope and tangible support to children in foster care in Northern California, specifically in Contra Costa County. Our conversation was deeply personal and eye-opening, as Sabine shared the story of how she was drawn to fostering, the invisible challenges foster kids face every day, and the gap Fostering Wishes strives to fill in the system.Listening to Sabine, I was struck by just how much fostering is about more than providing a home—it’s about restoring dignity, nurturing belonging, and reminding every child that they matter. We talked about how something as simple as offering a duffel bag instead of a trash bag can completely change a child’s experience, and how empowering it feels when the community steps in to help. One message that resonated with me is that fostering isn’t a one-way street; the families and children both grow, heal, and inspire each other. We also explored the urgent need for more foster homes and community volunteers, reminding me—and hopefully all of us—that creating change takes all of us working together. If you’ve ever wondered how you could help, big or small, this episode will give you ideas and renewed hope.

Ep. 47: Narcissists at work — The hidden cost of charisma | Results of Kindness (ROK) Podcast launch!
In the very first episode of my friend and business partner's new venture, The Results of Kindness Podcast, I sit down with the brilliant Meral Alizada to dig into a topic that’s become impossible to ignore: the alarming rise of narcissism in the workplace. This isn’t just a personality quirk we’re talking about—it’s a pattern that quietly poisons culture, causes high turnover, and kills productivity. I’ve seen it. I’ve felt it. And I know I’m not alone.Together, we explore what narcissistic behavior looks like on the job—not just the obvious red flags, but the more insidious ways it shows up in meetings, performance reviews, and team dynamics. We talk about the emotional aftermath for those who endure it, and why so many people stay silent. Narcissists often wear the mask of charisma, but behind it is manipulation, gaslighting, and a staggering lack of empathy. We also dive into why emotional intelligence isn’t optional anymore—it’s essential. If companies want to thrive, they need to wake up to these toxic dynamics and put real structures in place to protect their people. Kindness, boundaries, self-awareness—these aren't just “nice to haves.” They’re the new currency of leadership. This episode isn’t just a conversation—it’s the beginning of a movement. Ep. 44: 5 straight-up lies we tell ourselves when we experience adversity
In this solo episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on the quiet lies we whisper to ourselves when life gets hard. You know the ones...“I should be over this by now.” “Everyone else is handling it better.” I’ve said them, too.I talk about why pain isn’t weakness, why time alone doesn’t magically heal us, and how comparison steals our peace. This is about getting honest, not performative. It’s about taking our power back from the stories that keep us stuck.Through my own experiences—and the lessons I’ve gathered from guests over the years—I’m sharing what I know to be true: Healing has no timelineAdversity doesn’t get to write our identityWe’re allowed to be both hurting and hopeful at the same timeLearn more about how to take care of your mental health and get tips, tools, and view links to professional support in your area: PsychologyToday.com.If you're in the US and need someone to talk to, dial 988 for FREE mental health support."At the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, we understand that life's challenges can sometimes be difficult. Whether you're facing mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns, or just need someone to talk to, our caring counselors are here for you. You are not alone."Takeaways from this episode:Feeling pain is a sign of strength, not failure.Time doesn’t heal—intentional healing does.Social media is a highlight reel, not a mirror. There’s no finish line for healing. It’s not a race.Adversity may shape me, but it doesn’t define me.Naming my struggle is a brave step toward healing.True healing means facing my emotions, not avoiding them.I often hide my struggles—so comparing myself to others is misleading.I can have faith in my growth, even when it’s messy.I get to choose how I relate to my past—it doesn’t own me.

Ep. 41: How Sylvie alchemizes pain into power - Healing from domestic violence & narcissistic abuse
In this episode, my friend Sylvie opens up about something many people live through but rarely talk about out loud — the quiet, confusing world of emotional abuse. From the complexities of domestic violence to the subtle but deeply damaging patterns of narcissistic abuse and manipulation, she walks us through what it’s like to lose your sense of self… and how she found her way home again.Sylvie’s story is layered — not just because she lived it, but because she was also helping others do the same. While navigating her own experience, she was working at a domestic violence shelter, supporting women on their own paths to safety and healing. That dual role gave her a unique, inside-out understanding of what survival really looks like. But survival wasn’t the finish line. What came next was the deeper work — the healing. For Sylvie, that meant reconnecting with her spirituality, leaning into Christ consciousness, and allowing divine love and truth to break through the lies she had internalized. We talk about what it means to co-create healing with something bigger than yourself, and how faith, grace, and presence became part of her path forward. We also dig into a topic that doesn’t get enough airtime: the emotional toll of toxic female friendships. Because sometimes, the betrayal doesn’t come from a partner — it comes from a peer. Sylvie shares how she began to notice those patterns and set boundaries that honored her peace. In this episode, we explore:-What emotional and narcissistic abuse can look like behind closed doors-How Sylvie balanced her personal trauma while working in a domestic violence shelter-The role of spirituality and Christ consciousness in deep, soul-level healing-The often-overlooked toxicity in female friendships and social circles-How to rebuild trust in yourself — and reclaim your identity after abuseThis episode is for anyone who’s ever felt spiritually disconnected, emotionally untethered, or socially unseen.
