JESUS IS… The Light of the World — John 8:12-20 | Dave Miers

Series: JESUS IS… who he says he is. A series in the “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel.Date: 10 May 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: John 8:12-20--Jesus's declaration "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12) lands against the backdrop of the Feast of Tabernacles, where massive torches had just been extinguished in the temple treasury. Standing among the charred remains, Jesus claims to be the fulfilment of everything the festival symbolised.Tracing the theme of light from creation through the Old Testament, we see that darkness isn't merely out there. It resides within every human heart. Jesus offers freedom from that darkness through his death and resurrection. The cross becomes the place where the light shines brightest, where "the light of the world by darkness was slain" yet rose victorious. Followers of Jesus become children of light, shining his light in a dark world while awaiting the eternal city where God himself will be the only light needed.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

JESUS IS… The Bread of Life — John 6:22-71 | Dave Miers

Series: JESUS IS… who he says he is. A series in the “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel.Date: 3 May 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: John 6:22-71--Jesus declares, "I am the bread of life", in John 6, and the crowd that wanted bread walks away. Why? Because we live in the overlap of two ages, and Jesus is offering bread that the world doesn't recognise. The old age of decay continues; the new age has begun in Christ. We need daily bread for one, and eternal bread for the other.Religion says do, do, do. Jesus says the work of God is to believe in the one he has sent. He gave his flesh on the cross so that all who come to him, believe in him, and feast on him will be raised imperishable on the last day.So what are you really hungry for? And what bread are you living on? When others walked away, Peter spoke for the Twelve: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." There is nowhere else to go; only Jesus is the bread of life.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

JESUS IS… who he says he is — John 8:31-59 | Dave Miers

Series: JESUS IS… who he says he is. A series in the “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel.Date: 26 April 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: John 8:31-59--Who is Jesus? When he said "Before Abraham was, I am," he wasn't leaving the sentence unfinished — he was claiming the name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. Yahweh. The great I AM. The Jewish leaders understood exactly what he meant, which is why they picked up stones. This is a claim that won't let us settle for "good teacher" or "wise prophet." Jesus is either a liar, a lunatic, or the eternal LORD God who entered his own creation to set us free from slavery to sin. There's no neutral ground.Kicking off our eight-part series on the I AM statements of Jesus, we trace the Old Testament thread that runs through John 8 and consider what it means to meet a God who not only made the claim but backed it up — going to the cross in humility and rising again in power.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Partners in the Proclamation of Grace — 2 Timothy 4:1-22 | Steve Lister

Series: Stand AloneDate: 19 April 2026Preacher: Steve Lister (from AFES at The University of QLD)Scripture: 2 Timothy 4:1-22--Paul's dying words to Timothy, written from a Roman prison cell awaiting execution, carry an urgent charge: preach the word, with patience, in partnership, as a matter of priority. 2 Timothy 4 shows us how the gospel of grace shapes not just what we say but how we say it — and why the finish line of Christ's return changes how we run today.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

    Ascended — Luke 24:36-53 | Peter Judge-Mears

Series: Stand AloneDate: 12 April 2026Preacher: Rev Peter Judge-Mears (from Southside Anglican)Scripture: Luke 24:36-53--Drawing on Luke 24, we explore the disciples' emotional journey from devastation to understanding — showing that Jesus' death and resurrection weren't unexpected tragedies but the fulfilment of God's eternal plan written across the Old Testament. The Messiah had to suffer, rise, and send his people out to proclaim repentance and forgiveness to all nations. Jesus conquered through suffering, was vindicated through resurrection, and now reigns as King — and his people are called to announce that good news until the whole world has heard.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Beauty for Ashes: Easter Sunday — John 20:1-18 | Dave Miers

Series: Beauty for AshesDate: 5 April 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: John 20:1-18--Three moments of Easter beauty from John 20: beautiful history, beautiful intimacy, and beautiful feet. Christianity is not a myth — it's grounded in verifiable events, supported by Roman historians, Jewish sources, archaeological evidence, and eyewitness testimony. The empty tomb is the central historical claim, and it demands a verdict. The resurrection is also deeply personal — Jesus calls a grieving, fearful Mary Magdalene by name, and he calls ours too. And Easter doesn't end with encounter — it ends with commission. Those who've seen the risen Jesus are sent with beautiful feet and beautiful news: an invitation to trust Christ, and a challenge to make him known.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Beauty for Ashes: Good Friday — John 19:23-30 | Dave Miers

Series: Beauty for AshesDate: 3 April 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: John 19:23-30--Good Friday confronts us with the harsh reality of death — and the profound beauty hidden within it. Drawing from John 19, three glimpses of beauty emerge from the ashes of the crucifixion: beautiful affection, as Jesus cares for his mother and beloved disciple until the end; beautiful suffering, as Jesus thirsts so that we never have to thirst again; and beautiful victory, as his cry "It is finished" — tetelestai — declares not defeat but the debt of sin paid in full. Isaiah promised beauty for ashes. The cross is where that promise was paid for.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: Homeward Bound — 1 Peter 5:1-14 | Josh Hayward

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 29 March 2026Preacher: Josh Hayward (from Moore College)Scripture: 1 Peter 5:1-14--1 Peter 5 calls believers to persevere by holding tightly to Jesus, the Chief Shepherd, as they journey toward their eternal home. The Christian life is like a difficult road trip — full of noise and distraction — but Peter urges us to stay faithful because glory awaits.Three anchors for perseverance: cling to the Shepherd who cares with perfect authority; live in humility by casting your anxieties on God; and stay watchful against spiritual attack, trusting that present suffering is brief compared to eternal glory. The foundation is this: Jesus has already won. Through his death and resurrection, the victory is secured. Believers can trust him completely as they await his return and the unfading crown of glory he will give to all who remain faithful.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

    EMBRACE WEIRD: Insulted & Blessed — 1 Peter 4:12-19 | Tim Purdue

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 22 March 2026Preacher: Tim Purdue (from Moore College)Scripture: 1 Peter 4:12-19--God works through the suffering of his people to establish their faith and transform them for the glory of Christ.1 Peter 4:12-19 confronts a tension every Christian feels: the promises of God on one hand, and the reality of suffering on the other. Rather than viewing suffering as evidence that something has gone wrong, we are encouraged to see it as proof of our union with Christ and as God's means of preparing us for eternal glory.Three things happen through suffering: faith is established, disobedience is exposed, and we are transformed into the image of Christ. Suffering for Christ's name is not a sign of God's absence but of his active, gracious work in the lives of his children — deepening faith and conforming us to Christ's likeness.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: Look Up — 1 Peter 4:1-11 | Dave Miers

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 15 March 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: 1 Peter 4:1-11--How do you live knowing the end is coming?Peter's answer in 1 Peter 4:1-11 is surprisingly practical. We live between Christ's first and second coming — the same age as the early church — and that changes everything. Not panic. Not apathy. But eyes fixed on Jesus, and an intentional, gospel-shaped community that looks genuinely weird by the world's standards.Four priorities mark the life of those who believe Jesus is really coming back: prayer, love, hospitality, and service. One another, one another, one another, one another. As Christ gave himself for us, we give ourselves to each other — for the glory of God and the good of a watching world.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: It is Better to Suffer — 1 Peter 3:13-22 | Dave Miers

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 8 March 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: 1 Peter 3:13-22--Christians can embrace the blessing of unjust suffering — honouring Christ as holy, doing good, and gently explaining their hope — because of Christ's victory over unjust suffering: his penal, substitutionary, atoning death and victorious resurrection, guaranteeing their final vindication.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: Adorn the Soul — 1 Peter 3:1-12 | Dave Miers

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 1 March 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: 1 Peter 3:1-12--Living as elect exiles in a world obsessed with externals, Christians are called to something beautifully weird — a life shaped by inner godliness rather than outward appearance. From 1 Peter 3:1-12, this message walks through the godly character of Christ, of wives, of husbands, and of all God's people. Along the way, it addresses the misuse of submission texts, calls husbands to honour their wives as co-heirs of grace, and invites every believer to adorn the soul rather than the outward self — with Christ's example and atonement at the centre of everything.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: Honour, Endure, Entrust — 1 Peter 2:11-25 | Tim Baxter

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 22 February 2026Preacher: Rev Tim BaxterScripture: 1 Peter 2:11-25--In 1 Peter 2:11–25, Peter tackles the tension Christians live in — belonging to God while feeling like outsiders in the world. Three words shape the response: honour, endure, entrust. We're called to live with honour — beautiful conduct in our communities and workplaces — not just keeping out of trouble, but proactively doing good. We're called to endure unjust suffering rather than escape it, showing grace to those who don't deserve it, as God has shown us. And we're called to entrust our identity, our hopes, and our souls to God who judges justly — following the example of Jesus who suffered without retaliating. The anchor for all of this: Jesus is the shepherd and overseer of our souls, keeping us for eternity.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: You Belong Here — 1 Peter 2:4-10 | Dave Miers

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 15 February 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: 1 Peter 2:4-10--In 1 Peter 2:4-10, Peter tells scattered and marginalised Christians that they are living stones being built into God's house — a holy and royal priesthood. Drawing on the Reformation principle that all believers are priests, not just clergy, this passage addresses those who feel they don't fit in or feel inadequate, affirming that everyone who belongs to Jesus has a place and a purpose. Three things define our role as priests: we worship Christ by offering our whole lives as living sacrifices; we stand on Christ as our cornerstone, who takes our shame and gives us honour; and we proclaim Christ's excellencies to the world around us. Church life is messy, and people will let us down, but Jesus hasn't given up on his building project — and neither should we.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: Hope Changes Everything — 1 Peter 1:13-2:3 | Dave Miers

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 8 February 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: 1 Peter 1:13-2:3--Christian hope, rooted in Christ's resurrection, transforms every aspect of life. Drawing from 1 Peter 1:13-2:3, Christianity isn't about rule-keeping to earn God's favour, but responding to his grace with changed lives. A key biblical principle emerges: indicatives (what God has done) always precede imperatives (what we should do). Christians are called to embrace being "weird"—different from the world—not as a problem but as their greatest opportunity. Like the early Christians who thrived in hostile pagan cultures, believers today live as elect exiles whose hope in Christ leads to holiness, worship, love, and maturity.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

EMBRACE WEIRD: Elect Exiles — 1 Peter 1:1-12 | Dave Miers

Series: EMBRACE WEIRD: Reclaim the Genius of the First Christians from First PeterDate: 1 February 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: 1 Peter 1:1-12--Kicking off our 9-week series in 1 Peter, we explore what it means to be "elect exiles" — God's chosen people who don't fit in a post-Christian world. The early Christians thrived in hostile pagan cultures by embracing their Jesus-centric weirdness, and we face a strikingly similar situation today. This sermon establishes our core identity: elected by the Father, sprinkled by the blood of the Son, and set apart by the Spirit. When we know whose we are, we discover living hope through Christ's resurrection, which transforms everything—even our suffering.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

John 15:1-17 - Love People Weekly | Dave Miers

Series: LITURGIES OF LOVE: Take Back Your AlgorithmDate: 25 January 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: John 15:1-17--This sermon concludes our ‘Liturgies of Love’ teaching series, focusing on weekly habits that help shape our love for God and others. The central message is that Christian formation isn’t about perfect performance, but about staying connected to Jesus, His people, and His gospel — especially when we fall short. Drawing on John 15, the sermon highlights Jesus as the true vine, producing the fruit that Israel could not. As branches, we are called to abide in Him, accept God’s pruning in difficult seasons, and grow through life together in Christian community.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Matthew 6:1-18 - Love God Weekly | Dave Miers

Series: LITURGIES OF LOVE: Take Back Your AlgorithmDate: 18 January 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: Matthew 6:1-18, Matthew 11:28-12:14--Part three of "Liturgies of Love" explores how Christians can develop eight habits to counter our algorithmic age and grow in love for God and neighbour. Focussing on weekly rhythms to love God—fasting and Sabbath—this message examines Matthew 6's teaching on giving, prayer, and fasting as spiritual practices done for God alone, not for human approval. Our righteousness does not save us; it is by Jesus Christ that we are accepted as God's children, so our devotion flows from that acceptance rather than from trying to earn his favour. Moving to Matthew 11-12, Jesus invites the weary to find rest in him as Lord of the Sabbath, revealing that religious rules can't save us—only his finished work on the cross brings true rest.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Luke 10:25-37 - Love People Daily | Dave Miers

Series: LITURGIES OF LOVE: Take Back Your AlgorithmDate: 11 January 2026Preacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: Luke 10:25-37--This message focuses on how intentional daily habits can counter our distraction-filled, algorithm-driven culture and help us love our neighbours more faithfully. Two daily habits—eating one meal with others and spending one hour with phones off—cultivate presence and attention, which are essential forms of love. Through the parable of the Good Samaritan, we discover Jesus is the ultimate neighbour who loved us when we were enemies. Because we've been loved extravagantly, we're called to love others sacrificially—not to earn God's acceptance, but responding to gospel rhythms.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Tech companies have figured out how to hijack your dopamine system, programming your brain to crave the scroll. But here's the good news: the same brain that can be programmed by algorithms can be reprogrammed by love. In this new series, "Liturgies of Love," discover eight simple daily and weekly habits that will help you take back your algorithm and grow in love for God and others.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Christmas Eve - Trade Your Life For CHRIST | Dave Miers

Series: HE KNOWS YOUR NEED - Advent SeriesDate: 24 December 2025 - Christmas EvePreacher: Rev Dave MiersScripture: Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6, Galatians 4:4-7--Jesus knows your need — but do you know what your biggest need actually is?On Christmas Eve, we conclude the "He Knows Your Need" Advent series with a simple invitation: trade your life for Christ, because He traded His life for you.Through Isaiah's prophecies and Paul's letter to the Galatians, we discover that the baby born in Bethlehem is Emmanuel — God with us — who comes not just to forgive our sins, but to offer us adoption as sons and daughters. No longer slaves to sin, ourselves, our screens, our shame, or death itself — but co-heirs with Christ, able to cry out "Abba, Father."This is the trade of infinite worth: we give away our life lived in the shadow of death and receive the glorious life Christ came to bring.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Isaiah 54 - Trade Your Shame For LOVE | Dave Miers

Series: HE KNOWS YOUR NEED - Advent SeriesDate: 21 December 2025Preacher: Rev Dave Miers--Christmas is supposed to be light, but many of us carry something heavy: shame. Shame over personal failures we can't undo, and shame from wounds others have inflicted on us.This Advent sermon addresses the weight of disgrace we carry and shows how Christmas is God's ultimate answer. Through Isaiah 54, we see three movements of God's redemptive work: he sees our shame fully, without minimising it; he meets our shame by drawing near through the Incarnation; and he replaces our shame with his everlasting love through Christ's sacrifice on the cross. The message concludes with an invitation to come to Jesus and be defined not by shame, but by the steadfast love of God who paid the price for our freedom.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Series: HE KNOWS YOUR NEED - Advent SeriesDate: 14 December 2025Preacher: Rev Dave Miers--Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year —but for many of us, it's one of the hardest — grief, disappointment, loneliness, exhaustion. We try to manufacture joy, but deep down we know it's just survival. What if joy isn't something you create, but something God restores? In Isaiah 35, God promises to transform our deserts, restore what's broken, and bring us home with everlasting joy. This isn't superficial happiness or forced cheerfulness — it's the settled gladness that comes when God reverses the curse, heals our wounds, and drives sorrow away forever.Discover what Jesus does with your sorrow this Advent.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Isaiah 11 - Trade Your Battles For PEACE | Dave Miers

Series: HE KNOWS YOUR NEED - Advent SeriesDate: 7 December 2025Preacher: Rev Dave Miers--We're all fighting battles — conflict that won't resolve, anxiety that robs our sleep, the exhausting work of holding it all together. Series: Burn Your Boats - The Book of ActsDate: 23 November 2025Preacher: Rev Dave Miers--The book of Acts ends with Paul in Rome, under house arrest for two years. But instead of a dramatic conclusion, we get something better - Paul "proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance."This final sermon reveals why the early church was unstoppable: they made it all about Jesus. His message cuts so deep that Felix becomes alarmed and sends him away, saying "When I find a convenient time, I'll summon you."Two thousand years later, the gospel still stands under trial. Felix chose to procrastinate, endlessly delaying his response to Christ. We must not make the same fatal mistake. Today is the day to trust Christ and burn your boats.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]

Through him comes true freedom: freedom from sin, from shame, and from the impossible burden of trying to save ourselves. Some believe. Some reject. But the mission rolls on. Series: Burn Your Boats - The Book of ActsDate: 7 September 2025Preacher: Rev Dave Miers--When opposition comes, where will you turn? In Acts 12, a king of this world flexes—James is executed, Peter is jailed, and Herod basks in applause. But the church answers with its true weapon: earnest prayer. Walk through the chapter’s three acts—Martyred, Miracle, Multiplied—and watch the great reversal: the chapter opens with James dead, Peter imprisoned, and Herod triumphant; it closes with Herod dead, Peter free, and “the word of God increased and multiplied.” This message presses the Burn Your Boats call to go all-in with Jesus: trust the risen King, endure opposition, and pray like it matters.--Our dream is to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane, where many people have found refuge, security, and hope in Christ.Find out more about our church: www.christrefuge.coEmail [email protected]
