 Acts 2:1-13 NRSV. Today, Christians around the world celebrate Pentecost Sunday. In Acts 2, we see signs of the Holy Spirit operating in the corporate body of Christ – which is the miracle of Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit is present there is a welcoming environment and inclusion of ALL of God’s people, He allows for there to be unity in the midst of difference, and the Holy Spirit enables you to share the gospel with everybody you meet. Philippians 3:12-14 NRSV. What’s the thing that gets you out of bed in the morning, that shapes your decisions and fuels your efforts? All of us are pressing towards something whether we realize it or not. When all is said and done, will the goal you’ve been chasing satisfy you, or will it leave you wishing you had gone after something else? In Philippians 3, Paul talks about striving – not striving for status, success, or earthly rewards. It’s about a relentless pursuit of Jesus Christ. John 9: 17-25 NRSV. “One thing I do know, that though I was blind, but now I see!” That is a one-thing proclamation that will change the world.  Mark 10:17-22 NRSV. Does our wealth or our craving for it form a barrier to wholehearted devotion to God? What about your money and assets? Are you like, the rich young ruler – outwardly moral, yet inwardly controlled by material security? God might not call every person to sell all they have, but He does call each of us to live with open hands, ready to release whatever stands in the way of wholeheartedly loyalty to Him. Real worship arises when we divest ourselves of our supposed self-reliance and invest in God’s kingdom in the present and in the future. Psalm 27:4 (NRSV). What is the one thing, above all things, you most want to live for? Life is full of many things and many of these things are good. But none of these things should be the one thing above all things that we most desire. Over the next few weeks, Pastor Wallace is going to ask you five “One Thing” questions. The “one-things” to which Jesus invites us, to which Jesus calls us, result in a many-things blessings from Him back to us. Today’s one-thing is Psalm 27:4. Philippians 3:10 (NIV). Easter is about the power of the resurrection. Today’s text focuses on this one verse and challenge you to “live in the power of His resurrection. Do you want to feel the power of the resurrected life? The resurrection of Jesus doesn’t automatically erase all the problems of this world; but it gives us true life in the midst of all that is around. Luke 19: 41-44 (NRSV). Luke’s account of the gospel is the only one in which Jesus sees the city and weeps. If tears and weeping are Jesus’ entry into Holy Week, maybe tears and weeping should be our entry into Holy Week. Pastor Wallace challenges us in this text to understand that although the city is Jerusalem, but it’s not about only a particular city. It’s more about a condition. It’ about our ignorance of “the things that make for peace,” and blindness to “the time of (our) visitation from God.” In our faith walk, it is important to know why Jesus wept. Zacchaeus was a lonely, very short little fellow, but he wanted to see Jesus. And then he was in for the surprise of his life, for as the Lord passed by, the Lord stopped, and he said, “Zacchaeus…come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” The same is for us today. The Lord sees you today. Luke 13:1-9 (NIV). Karl Barth, the renowned Swiss Reformed Theologian, famously said “take your Bible and take your newspaper, and read both. But interpret newspapers from your Bible.” This is so, because faith isn’t something we live in isolation. It’s not separate from real life. The gospel speaks into our world – into war and injustice, into the everyday struggles of ordinary people. Out today’s text speaks into our life today and we find ourselves asking: What does this mean? Where is God in this? How should we respond. And that’s not a new question. Luke 5:1-11 (NRSV). The lesson from today’s text is a story of Jesus calling four fishermen to be fishers of people. The purpose of this miracle was not to meet a human-need. It was a teaching miracle. We will see five aspects of Christ’s divine nature and glory manifested: 1) disciples love to hear the word of God taught; 2) disciples obey Jesus even when it doesn’t make sense; 3) disciples are aware of their own sinfulness; 4) disciples are fishers of people; and 5) disciples are willing to forsake all and follow Christ. Luke 4:1-13 (NRSV). The biblical account of the temptation of Jesus as described in Luke’s Gospel should put us in the right mind to approach Lent as a time for reflection, penance and prayer in preparation for Easter. Jesus begins His ministry in the wilderness. Lent is a wilderness time for us. Jesus was “full of the Holy Spirit and we all should want to be “full of the Holy Spirit.” If you are full of the Spirit as a Christian, you will face your own wilderness at some point. But the Spirit doesn’t desert you in the desert, just like he did not desert Jesus in the wilderness. In the wilderness, Jesus, “full of the Holy Spirit,” turns to the word of God. Will you? 1 Corinthians 3: 6-9 (KJV). In our text, we will see the apostle Paul’s efforts to correct the Corinthian church’s view of their leaders with a proper estimation of the value and role of human leaders in light of God’s rank in all of these. In other words, God is given the rank of pr-eminent one. God is everything. He is the highest. He’s the greatest. And if that is true, if God is pre-eminent in rank, then it ought to change how we live our lives! Philippians 1:9-11 (NRSV) teaches us three ways to pray for God’s best. First, pray that love may abound. Second, pray that excellence may prevail. Third, pray that fruit may grow. 2 Chronicles 16:7-8 (NRSV) outlines the danger of relying on human strength rather than God, using King Asa’s mistake to highlight a divine promise: God actively searches the earth to strongly support those with a heart fully committed to Him. True spiritual success requires total dependence on God, not worldly alliances. May we choose this day to increase our commitment to God by: 1) desiring to be blessed by God; 2) desiring to be used by God more; and 3) desiring to know God intimately. In today’s gospel reading, it is Jesus’ apostles who are asking for more faith. Even they sometimes struggled with believing and trusting in God and in their leader, Jesus. No wonder they cry out, “Increase our faith.” Living as a disciple of Jesus seems impossibly challenging for them then and for us today. I think most of us have struggled with faith as some point in our lives. Thus, in today’s message, Pastor Wallace suggests three specific things that we can do to grow our faith. Messy families are nothing new, and families have been messy since the beginnings of time – it’s “All in the Family.” The skeletons in Jesus’ family closet points to the instabilities of Israel’s history, the long story of a very dysfunctional family. And that is good news for everyone who comes from a less than perfect family, anyone who has a few skeletons in the family. In today’s message, Pastor Wallace focuses on the stories of the four women who appear in the genealogy of Jesus recorded in Matthew’s Gospel and ask why they are included. Matthew, in his gospel narrative of the birth of Christ, picked up what Isaiah had prophesied, and used it in application to the Lord Jesus. Listen to his words: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). God is not distant. He is here, with us. He is not unapproachable, unreachable. He became one of us so that we could know Him, so that we could know how much He loves us. Support the show

Despite benefiting firsthand from God’s love, David has difficulty concealing his amazement at his Lord’s awesome power. Through Jesus Christ, God’s limitless love is extended to each and every one of us and therein lies the beauty of David’s Thanksgiving Prayer. John 4:46-54 (NRSV). Sunday, November 9, 2025. In today’s message, we have here a nobleman who is dealing with a problem that he can’t solve. Trouble and hard times can hit regardless of your status and your checkbook. His problems caused him to look to Jesus. The same holds true today. It’s been my pleasure these past few weeks to bring you the Word of God as expressed through the Book of James. Today’s message is Part V: “Faith and Deeds: Working Together Works.” James is simply reminding us that you really do not believe something until it shapes and forms what you do and how you live. Our passage begins by asking two pointed- questions: “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such a faith save him? He then answers his own question by asking us to consider a certain scenario. Then finally, he draws a conclusion: faith and deeds – working together works. Active faith releases God’s power. Even so, faith, if it hath not deeds, is dead, being alone. Amen Support the show

As your pastor, I want you to be the kind of person who reads the Word of God, understands it, applies it, and reap the rewards of doing it. I want you to be blessed in your life. I want you to experience God’s blessings that come from obedience in your home, in your marriage, in your finances, at work, at school and where life takes you. What God wants is that when He looks at us, we look like the WORD! James talks about this connection between God’s Word and our obedience to it that results in blessings. The question of today’s text is: what are you going to do with what you hear. Thus, our text gives us three things to consider. Four things that if you take these seriously will be transformational to your life. First, God Wants You to Investigate His Word. Second, God Wants You to Apply His Word. Third, God Wants You to Remember His Word. Fourth, God Wants You to be Rewarded by His Word. Are you a hearer only or a doer of God’s Word? If you do what it says and do not forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. AMENSupport the show

The reception of God’s Word is an absolute necessity for Christian growth. In other words, you will never be a growing Chrisitan without a knowledge of the Word of God. In today’s message, Pastor Wallace teaches from James 1:21 about how to receive the implanted Word of God with meekness. Thus, we are to “open ourselves up to ‘this word,” maintain a continual openness toward it, so that its’ power might be continually at work within us. The same word by which we were brought to a new birth is the same word by which we grow and by which we finally will be delivered. Today, we continue our sermon series in the Book of James with Part II – “Asking God for Wisdom.” After James talks to us about the trials, the temptations, the falsities of life, then he talks to us about wisdom: what it is and how to get it and how to ask for wisdom in prayer. Pastor Wallace wants you to know that it is God’s will for you to become a mature Christian that is wanting no good thing. But we need to grow up! Our faith is still incomplete. One of things we lack is wisdom. God uses trials to expose our need for wisdom. Our text teaches that God freely provides wisdom to face life’s trials to those who come to Him in believing prayer. Vance Havner said it well: “if you lack knowledge, go to school. If you lack wisdom, get on your knees.” When was the last time you asked for God’s wisdom? Today, we begin a new sermon series on the subject: “Life Lessons from James, Part I – “Passing the Tests in Life.” We know that trials, even the most profound ones are a gift from God. But in this message, Pastor Wallace teaches us that spiritual maturity is not attained by merely experiencing trials – it is attained by embracing them. Putting faith too work in your life has more to do with how you respond to trouble (trials and tests) than perhaps anything else in your life. So, is it any wonder that James begins to challenge the believer to bring his/her faith down to earth – making our faith real – that he immediately launches into giving us the truth about testing and temptations. Glorifying God in WorshipAs Christians, we need to be absolutely sure why we go to church. In today’s message, Pastor Wallace teaches us that true believers go to church because they desire to do so, and out of this desire, they obey God’s commands. They do not obey God’s commands and then are furnished with the desire. No, their desire, flowing out of a changed heart, pushes them to crave covenanted worship. It’s like when David said” I was glad when they said let us go to the house of God.” Our desire as Christians should be to attend church because that is where we are able to glorify God; that is what we were created to do. They set direction, define action and hopefully bring about a satisfied fulfillment in your life. However, true success is to lay hold of that for which God has laid hold on you. In today’s text, Paul pursued his goal with absolute determination. He gave humanity a Formula: forgetting what is behind; then focusing on the life goal avoiding side-tracking. God therefore calls us all to reach out to higher ground. Pastor Wallace gives us four great words regarding this passage that could help us understand the text fully: Dissatisfaction; Devotion; Direction; and Determination. Summarily, we are all in a race – we are moving somewhere – where are you going? What direction are you running in? Are you running towards God or away from God? My prayer is that as Jesus gets a hold of you, that you would hold onto Him. Amen. Sooner or later we all wonder about God’s seeming inactivity. Where is God when we need Him? In the book of Genesis, Joseph faced some of the worst difficulties anyone ever encountered. In today’s message, Drawing, from insights from Joseph’s story, Pastor Wallace gives five principles you can take to heart and apply in times like these. They are: 1) Don’t demand to Understand; 2) Don’t fail to be faithful; 3) Don’t Bow to Bitterness; 4) Be willing to wait; and 5) Don’t let dreams dissolve. Scripture Text: John 6:66-69 NIVOur passage today is preceded by a monumental miracle in Jesus’ ministry. John 6 begins, so famously, with the feeding of the Five thousand. After the miracle of feeding, Jesus withdraws from this kind of thing because He knows they have the wrong intentions, mistaken motives when the follow Him. They see Him as their baker and not Savior. Thus, He begins speaking also of things spiritual. He wants them to pay more attention to the life to come than they do to this life. As we consider how we should respond to the stresses and struggles we face living these days, Pastor Wallace notes three things about this interaction: first, we should note Jesus’ question; second, we should note Peter’s understanding of his options; and third, we should note Peter’s answer. Thus, we will be better prepared to answer the question “to whom do you go?” Better, yet, “where else would we want to go?” Living these days are difficult and disappointing, but our hope is in Jesus Christ! Scripture Text: 1 Kings 19:7-13 NRSV As Pastor Wallace continues our sermon series: “Discerning the Voice of God,” let us be mindful of what Richard Foster noted in his book, that “God speaks to people not because they have special abilities, but because they are willing to listen.” As followers of Christ, our goal is to obey the voice of God, to discern what kind of life He desires for us and heed His commands. As we will see in this text, God’s voice is, at times, a whisper in the storm. Although our story notes that Elijah was hiding in a cave from Jezebel; yet the story suggests a way forward in the following ways: 1) eat and drink of God’s life-giving sustenance; 2) return to the bedrock of faith; and 3) listen to God’s still (quiet) small voice. Here’s the Good News for today – God speaks to us in the ways that are beset for us. God deals with us where we are in life. Amen. Scripture Text: Acts 16:6-12 NIV The second half of Acts is a recording of how Paul discerned the voice of the Holy Spirit. This is critical to us – how to know when God is speaking. The issue is not what God calls Paul to do but how Paul hears from God. How does God speak to us – guide our footsteps? In today’s message, Pastor Wallace highlights ways the Apostle Paul had to discern the voice of God, particularly when doors close…and when doors open. Paul was “kept,” from going west into Asia, and then prompted by the Holy Spirit to go towards the region of Macedonia. So, he took the gospel into Greede instead of Asia Minor. We should be glad Paul paid attention to God’s closed and opened doors. Thus, from this teaching, we can learn the following: first, God will guide you if you trust Him; second, don’t be disappointed by closed doors, third, be active as you look for God’s open door, and fourth, don’t depend on “doors” alone to find God’s will. On Pentecost Sunday, we tend to think of as a celebration of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the New Testament Church. However, it is much more! Theologian, Theodore Hiebert notes that Pentecost is “the church’s charter.” That means it is a definition of what the church is and what the church is to become whether we realize it or not. In today’s message, Pastor Wallace challenges us to think about whether we are a Pentecostal Church – not based on denominational affiliation, but an experience and way of living. The Holy Spirit came upon the church at Pentecost, and he suggests two signs that the Spirit is working today in the church: Affirmation of Diversity, and Unified Diversity. Sunday, May 18, 2025 – Covenant Community ChurchScripture Text: Jeremiah 29:10-14 NRSV Jeremiah 29 gives attention to those in exile, those who had been taken away, captured, kidnapped, deported from their homeland in Judah – and carried away to Babylon. A person can find themselves in exile while being geographically at home or at church. Perhaps many of you feel like those ancient Israelites felt. Perhaps you, too, feel like you’re not where you need to be. In today’s message we learn that God sent Jeremiah to remind the people that God planned to restore them – to give them hope for the future. And Christians today have that same hope. As we worship God and listen for His guidance, He will lead us to our destiny. And even when difficult days come, and they will, we can always live with hope because the Lord walks with us each day. Sunday, April 27, 2025 – Covenant Community ChurchAre you running a hope deficit? Financial pressures. Family drama. Failing health. Political disenfranchisement. Will things get better? The way you imagine your future is crucial. It reveals whether or not you have hope. And it reveals where your hope lies. Misplaced hope isn’t hope at all. Hope is necessary for our well-being. In 1 Peter, we find hope that endures through every trial and can’t be taken away. It’s the hope that lies at the center of Christian faith and life; hope that transforms the way we live today. Our hope is in a future inheritance hat is founded on God’s mercy, secured through Christ’s resurrection and kept by God’s power. Peter stated that the only goal that cannot be crushed by this fallen world is the living hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. In today’s message we visit Mary Magdalene, the most devoted of Jesus’ followers at His tomb, grieving her catastrophic loss, three days after His horrific death. Her heartache was inconsolable. Death had taken from Mary the most important person in her life; the person she had loved. She thought she would be visiting the place where Jesus’ lifeless body lay at rest. But the wonder, the mystery, the miracle of Easter is that it wasn’t there. The tomb was empty! The Easter story dares us to believe that a dead man didn’t stay dead, but instead, by the power and love of God, He was released from the tomb. And more than that, Easter declares that Jesus is still alive and present in the world even today and that Jesus always will be alive. And that Jesus wants us to live forever and ever with Him. Amen. Today is called Palm Sunday because of the reference in John’s Gospel of the people of Jerusalem welcoming Jesus coming to their city by strewing palm branches on the road in front of His procession. The Gospel of Luke is able to convey to us through this travel narrative a sense of urgency and critical importance of becoming committed disciples of Jesus Christ and join following after Jesus. In today’s message, Pastor Wallace challenges us to: 1) never criticize others for their praise; and 2) don’t stop praising God! Amen. Scripture Text: Matthew 16:13-19 NRSVThe world has lots of descriptions of who Jesus Christ was and is. But who do we say He is? This will determine how we deal with life and how we face the future. The question of Jesus was not simply about His identity, it was about their allegiance. Today, we are faced with the same question, and we must ask who ourselves, who will we give our allegiance to. Your greatest confession about Christ should always be your latest confession about Christ. In today’s message, Pastor Wallace warns us that the time has come for each of us to stand up and be counted. Sincere confessions of faith are what the Savior asks of us, because the world needs to see bold authentic witnesses once again. Amen. In the Gospel of John, we learn that Lazarus was very sick, and his sisters knew that Jesus was his only hope. Therefore, they sent for Him to come and heal their brother. They were desperate. They needed the presence of the One whom they loved and on whom they depended. They expected Him to do what all friends would do: drop everything and run to their aid. We often have expectations that have nothing to do with what God is saying to us or others. We ask the Lord to bless us within our mental framework or within our parameters of comfort, but the Lord’s desire is to give us a “take away the stone” experience. Sunday, March 23, 2025 – Covenant Community Church Scripture Text: Luke 4:1-4 (NRSV)In this world, we face temptation all the time. Whether you are a Christian listening this morning or not you know that temptation is real. You can think of times or circumstances in your life where you have been tempted to do the wrong thing, and you have either done it or resisted it. In today’s message, we will learn how Jesus came out of the wilderness victorious and how we can live a victorious life. Jesus’ temptations and struggles in the wilderness were about clarifying and deepening His life. Lent is intended to be a time for self-reflection and examination; looking at who we are becoming, how we are living, where our life is headed. In other words, it is the struggle to clarify who you are, and the values that orient and drive your life. We may find ourselves in the wilderness. But even in the wilderness, we are not alone! And in the temptation, too, we have what we need. God has equipped us to fight off our sinful desires with His Word. Sunday, March 19, 2025 – Covenant Community Church Scripture Text: Mark 12:1-11 (NRSV)Many of us grew up hearing the overly used adage, “sticks and stones may break my bones,” but words will never hurt me.” But the truth is: words do hurt. Words can break hearts, ruin relationships, deflate confidence and self-esteem, and crush hopes and dreams. In today’s message we find examples and lessons learned from this experience from our text as Pastor Wallace continues our sermon series: “Journey of Stones.” In this passage we find two things: 1). Jesus confronted the accusers (8:1-9) and 2). Jesus confronted the accused (8:10-11). When you come to Jesus “caught in the act,” you expect the full weight of the law to crush into you. It’s what you deserve. But thanks be to God, with Jesus, you get what you don’t deserve – God’s amazing grace! Scripture Text: Mark 12: 1-11 (NRSV) As we start our Lenten Sermon Series: The Journey of Stones, this morning we will focus on “The Rejected Stones.” Drawing on the rich imagery of rocks and stones in Scripture, these messages center around the compelling metaphor of stones as representative of our sins. In today’s text Jesus offers a parable that speaks both of the past and of the future. The parable recounts the history of the nation of Israel and then prophesies of the judgment that is coming against them. While the main point of this parable is to announce judgment and foretell the work of Christ, it’s also a great reminder of the character of God. As Jesus  recounts the ways God has dealt with Israel in the past and the way He will act in the future we get a clear view of God’s goodness, patience, love, and grace. Pastor Wallace tells us when you feel rejected, remember the Stone, and remember the Vineyard. Scripture Text: Nehemiah 8:9-10 (NRSV)Black History month is a time for us to reclaim the joy and strength of African American people’s identity. It celebrates overcoming grief, tragedy and triumphs through the power of God. One of the greatest intellectuals for the Christian Church in the 20th century aptly noted “if it had not been for the been for the black church, there would probably be no church in this country.” In today’s message Pastor Wallace shares insights from Nehemiah 8:9-10 to better understand the meaning of history as related to God in our Black History. The essence of our collective faith in these difficult times is grounded in the words of Ezra to the people for us not to “grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your (our) strength.” The Lord centers joy and strength in us from day to day. Scripture Text: Hebrews 13:15-16 (NIV) Today’s message brings us to the end of our sermon series: Making Your Life Count: “Live Life as a Sacrifice of Praise.” Our Christian aspiration, individually and collectively, is to live life as a sacrifice of praise to God. That’s what our sermon text (Hebrews 13:15-16) today is all about. It’s exhorting us to live life as a sacrifice of praise to God and that ought to be an aspiration for us. It ought to be something that we want to do, that we long to do, that we desire to do! That is, because of what Jesus has done for us. Now what does that mean and how do we do that? Pastor Wallace teaches us what that means and we are enabled to do that as we see the five parts of this one exhortation. We live life as a sacrifice of praise: 1) Through Him; 2) Continually, 3) With Thanks; 4) Doing Good; and 5) Sharing Generously. In other words, the author of Hebrews is saying God does not leave you in suspense wondering what a life that pleases Him look like. May your life reflect His wishes. Amen.
