There would be as many skeptics as those with blind obsession in merit-making. In this talk, "Merits: Transforming Mind and Life", Sis Sylvia Bay makes an unprecedented Dhamma sharing on this topic, researching and presenting no less than 20 suttas. Merits are as important for the departed as well as for the living till the end of lives. How is this so and what must one cultivate now in order that our next arising is minimally that of the human rebirth and one which no short of the five mundane pleasures? And what is the most meritorious and sublimed that we can cultivate that far exceeds even gifting to a Sammāsambuddha? Piṅgiyānī Sutta AN 5.195 - Buddha expounded a relatively short sutta to Brahmin Piṅgiyānī and 500 Licchavīans about five gems that are rare in this world. On surface value, it seems like an easy to understand sutta. Sis Sylvia Bay offered deeper insights into each of these five gems and reminded at the end, that one should not take blessings in this life for granted but to anchor firmly in the Dhamma and do our part for Dhamma to help ourselves and others. Bhikkhunupassaya Sutta SN 47.10 - This is one of the lesser known suttas on meditation where Ānanda reported to the Buddha on the nun's meditation progress. In sharing this sutta, Sis Sylvia Bay explains how one can achieve samādhi when right mental conditions are present and features of first and second jhānas. At the end she unveiled the cryptic meaning of what Buddha meant when he said at the end: These are the feet of trees, Ānanda, these are empty huts. Meditate, Ānanda, do not be negligent, lest you regret it later. This is our instruction to you.” Understanding Buddha's cryptic message would dispel the notion that meditation refers only to jhānas and why it is essential that in our daily sitting and practice we should focus on the cultivation of the four foundations of mindfulness as well. This is the edited and annotated version. Acelakassapa Sutta SN 12.17 traced how ascetic Kassapa who was practising extreme mortification where nakedness was part of the practice, was awakened by the Buddha. Sis Sylvia Bay deciphered the cryptic nature of the conversation between Buddha and Kassapa, where Buddha replied, "It is not that I do not know and see suffering, Kassapa. I know suffering, I see suffering." where Buddha used conditionality to trigger Kassapa's awakening. In the same manner, Sis Sylvia highlighted why we are shackled by dukkha and yet, there is non-self. Two suttas with seemingly common theme of "cetanā" headline this Dhamma sharing session by Sis Sylvia Bay. They are however very different with Cetanā Sutta SN12.38 (Intention) focusing on how rebirth or consciousness are driven by intention, planning and tendencies and that even if one does not have intention or planning but as long as one continues to have subtle habits, rebirth will persist. And as long as there is birth, there will be a whole mass of suffering. The second sutta, Cetanākaraṇīya Sutta AN11.2 (Making a Wish), explains the path to liberation is conditional upon one whose behaviour is virtuous. Establishing the right conditions would naturally set the Dhamma wheel turning, leading one to see the purpose and benefit of knowledge and vision that will lead one towards liberation. 2020.00804 | Susimaparibbājaka Sutta SN 12.70 by Sylvia Bay
Recording Date: 2020.00804 Title: Susimaparibbājaka Sutta SN 12.70 Speaker: Sylvia Bay Talk is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ovAhqdsEHjU Sylvia Bay YouTube Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJPuTUQiCx5w1LLhZ8OrPu_QI1sQ-oe6y Sylvia Bay Catalog: https://www.dhammawitz.com/sylvia-bay This talk, "Susimaparibbājaka Sutta SN 12.70" was given by Sis Sylvia Bay at the invitation of Buddha Dhamma Mandala Society (BDMS) via zoom meeting on 4 August 2020. This is the edited and annotated version. This sutta is more commonly known as the Susīma Sutta where wanderer, Susīma infiltrated the Buddha's sangha community to learn what the Buddha had taught so that he can teach his own group of wanderers. A part of the sutta which is subject to misinterpretation was clarified by Sis Sylvia Bay regarding deep meditation i.e, are the deeper states of jhāna which can lead to development of psychic powers practised by arahants in their path to liberation? The core of this sutta, however is anchored on liberation based on wisdom to which Sis Sylvia skilfully dissected the phrase, ‘This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self' using the 5 grasping aggregates and three characteristics and highlighting why Buddha explained conditionality in both ascending and descending order when he taught Susīma. A highlight of the Q&A session is the explanation that one should not simply cut off contact without right understanding/view. People of all religions are generally fixated about the genesis of the world or some theory behind existence of the world or that there must be a direct cause and effect. In this sharing of Aggañña Sutta DN 27, Sis Sylvia Bay explained that Dhamma is beyond that: there is no first cause, rather, every phenomena is conditionally arisen with craving as the foremost driving force. The sutta traces a point in time where beings are simple in form and their relationship with food; how over an unimaginable super long period of time, interaction without restraints with the environment transformed both beings and the environment; and how different groups of society emerged to maintain social order and stability. Regardless of the passage of time and changes, Dhamma remains the most important. Like the Sigālovada Sutta DN31, Mahānāma Sutta AN 8.25 was delivered by the Buddha for the lay people's training and cultivation. In this Dhamma sharing by Sis Sylvia, she first explained what is meant by going to the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha) for refuge. Then she highlighted the eight qualities that a lay person should cultivate not only for his own welfare but also for others. Finally, she provided a checklist for one to identify whether one is a nominal Buddhist or an exemplary lay follower of the Buddha. Bojjhaṅga or the 7 Factors of Enlightenment ("7FE") is the final part of a 4-part series (earlier, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Wrong View) that emphasises on the critical importance of being wholesome in body, speech and mind for ease of daily living. Sis Sylvia first explains what the regular mind is like and that upon 'contact' how stress, getting caught up and becoming heedless can conditionally arise. Using a suite of different suttas related to 7 Factors of Enlightenment, Sis Sylvia explains how even when 7FE are not mental faculties but mental states that are fleeting, one can experience relief. The crux of the talk, however, is about how one sets the conditions for these 7FE to arise, to cultivate them to become faculties (4 steps) and how to apply them and in explaining the 7FE, regular mindfulness (sati) is differentiated from the enlightenment factor of sati. In the end, Sis Sylvia shared a beautiful sutta on the far shore describing extinguishment. This is the edited and annotated version. Though relatively shorter than other suttas, it is in fact, very profound, targeted at the bhikkhus and serious practitioners. In unravelling the sutta, Sis Sylvia explains the four bonds that bind us to samsara and the framework (origin and passing away; gratification; danger; and escape) which Buddha used "to understand as they really are" which requires a high level of practice of mindfulness, reflecting on the nature of the mind and trimming craving at its root, i.e., ignorance. By using the Four Noble Truths and Dependent Origination pertaining to the five aggregates subject to grasping which are conditionally arising and ceasing, Sis Sylvia explains how in our engagements with the world, by guarding our six sense bases and contact, without ignorance and delusion, one who is detached from unwholesome states can sever the four bonds, be equanimous leading to cessation of craving. Wrong View (micchādiṭṭhi) blind and bind us in samasara deluding us and creating conditions for unwholesomeness (akusala) and suffering (dukkha) to ourselves and others. In this talk, Sis Sylvia Bay first distinguishes what is meant by Wrong View from mundane views; the dangers of wrong view and in particular, how we end up having wrong views due to our pre-disposition of ignorance (avijjā) impacting on (a) the four perversions of perception, mind and view, (b) identifying form as self, self as form, form in self and self in form, that is, the 5 aggregates of grasping, and (c) kamma. Sis Sylvia further explains how the peril of wrong view has a heavy consequence on spiritual practice and stream-entry. For the last part of the talk, how one, when anchored on right View, practising dāna (giving/generosity), sīla (morality) and bhāvanā(mental cultivation) will result in daily wholesome living is covered. For the first time in public, Sis Sylvia Bay shares her understanding of Sabbāsava Sutta MN 2, All the Taints. Though Buddha's audience were the Bhikkhus, this sutta is extremely important for one who is a serious practitioner. The āsavas are first defined and from various suttas stated as karmic inclinations for sensual pleasures (kāmāsava), for being/becoming (bhavāsava) for ignorance (avijjāsava) and for views (diṭṭhāsavā). The main and most important part of the talk focuses on the 7 methods which Buddha expounded to extinguish these taints depending on circumstances; in explaining this part, Sis Sylvia brings to life how our āsavas are conditionally arisen, relating them to five aggregates and our habits. Throughout and in particular, towards the end of the talk, a salient and obscure observation of the sutta is highlighted: how, in using the 7 methods, fetters are eradicated leading to stream-entry and ultimately nibbanā. This talk covers an extensive list of Sutta. Right Livelihood is 'fifth' under the Noble Eightfold Path. Sis Sylvia Bay explains that it's not simply about Right and/or Wrong Livelihood. Rather, Right Livelihood sits on precepts and must not be unpinned by any of the ten akusala kamma activities and not driven by lobha (greed/desire) and dosa (anger/ill-will/agitation). Instead, we need to cultivate dāna (generosity/giving), sīla (morality), bhāvanā (wisdom, morality and concentration) and our attitude should be one of empathy to others and not inflict on others what you would not inflict on ourselves. Sis Sylvia further explains that one must avoid staining the mind, must cultivate kusala (wholesomeness), restrain akusala (unwholesomeness); respect others, be kind and gentle, be considerate of another's feelings, etc. A practitioner will always have a sense of both hiri (moral conscience of shame) and ottappa (fear of moral shame) as guiding principles to safeguard our body, speech and mind. Using these key principles, one will be able to assess whether both the job and one's own attitude draws one closer to Dhamma or further away. In the first part of the talk, Sis Sylvia Bay shares how the cultivation of the Noble Eightfold Path leads one to be awakened to see Dhamma, i.e., every phenomena as 'reality as is', and how dukkha can cease in daily life by exercising restraint. In the second part, Right Action which comes under sīla (morality) is explained through Sāleyyaka Sutta MN 41 where the ten unwholesome actions are to be avoided. Sis Sylvia further elaborated on the subtleties of the ten unwholesome actions and how it is a reflection of our mental states; and that it is critical for a practitioner to understand that avoidance of evil is not sufficient, but one must also do good and purify the mind, i.e., via dāna (giving, generosity), sīla and bhāvanā (cultivation). In this sequel, Sylvia Bay shared what Buddha had taught Sigāla in terms of financial planning which remains timeless to this day and how to have harmonious relationships in lay life. The springboard of relationships with different parties first stems from a harmonious parent and child relationship and underlying all relationships are the mental states of generosity, respect, consideration and other wholesomeness without expectations from another; and in how one behaves and conducts oneself, the other corresponding party would reciprocate if they too, have the same mundane wisdom. Sigālovada Sutta, under Dīgha Nikāya is a long dispensation given by the Buddha for lay people. In order to cover the sutta comprehensively, this sutta sharing by Sylvia Bay comes in two parts over two separate sessions. In the usual style of Sylvia's Dhamma sharing, the sutta is dissected and explained with particular attention to how one can apply in daily life what the Buddha had taught. The essence of the sutta is about "how one can live a fruitful, happy, harmonious and trouble-free life in society". In part one, Sylvia compared the differences between lay and monastic life; how one should uphold sīla; and how to discern friends, i.e., associating with the wise and not the foolish. In part two, managing harmonious relationships will be covered. 2020.0614 Ratana Sutta Sn1.2 The Jewel Discourse by Sylvia Bay
Recording Date: 2020.0614 Title: Ratana Sutta Sn1.2 The Jewel Discourse Speaker: Sylvia Bay https://www.dhammawitz.com/ https://www.facebook.com/DhammaWitz/ https://www.instagram.com/dhammawitz/ https://www.pinterest.com/dhammawitz/ This talk, "Ratana Sutta Sn1.2" was given by Sylvia Bay at the invitation of KL Dhamma Friends via zoom meeting on 14 Jun 2020. This is the recorded, edited and annotated version is scheduled for release on 17 Jun 2020. Ratana Sutta from Sutta Nipāta (Sn 2.1), like the Karaṇīya Mettā Sutta (Sn1.8) and Maṅgala (Sutta Kp5) have a paritta or protection aspect to it. Does it really have a protection or blessing aspect? Sylvia Bay explains the context in which Buddha delivered the Sutta, where the city of Vesāli was strickened by famine, pestilence and evil spirits, quite similar to the current Covid-19 situation. In the Dhamma sharing, Sylvia shed light that the sutta has a strong emphasis on the qualities of the noble disciples of the Buddha, the Ariya Saṅgha and why they are important for us to draw inspiration for our practice and trigger wholesome mental states before we even chant. The sotāpanna or stream-enterer mind states and qualities are also explained. Sylvia also shared how lay people can dāna and express our gratitude.
