Most HSPs think they're being assertive when they're still stuck in passivity or passive aggression that feels icky. Until my thirties, invisibility was my whole strategy, gold medal people pleaser, total Gumby for whatever anybody wanted. Growing up in dysfunction taught me to keep peace, avoid shame, never rock boats, and my nervous system still confuses distance with actual danger by filling gaps with zero evidence. Real assertiveness interrupts all that projecting our past onto new people, it says I will state my reality and see what happens instead of mind reading or assuming. Passivity just gathers resentment while passive aggression creates confusion, but assertiveness? It gathers clarity. Light and love. American culture is a breeding ground for predator's like Jeffrey Epstein and his cohorts because the powerful are protected by corruption and our collective cowardice. The Epstein list reveals how predators curate alibis by surrounding themselves with people who'd never suspect, choosing bystanders as strategically as victims. American culture doesn't help because it sends contradictory sexual messages at young people, creating confusion predators exploit. Most bystanders who suspect abuse choose easy over right, justifying silence with "it's not my place" while children get hurt. He was a peace activist, prolific author, poet, and teacher, who founded the Plum Village Tradition, and is recognized as the main inspiration for engaged Buddhism. Known as the "father of mindfulness" his words have held me through so much healing. Spiritual mothers and fathers can come from almost anywhere, not just proximity, and if you come from toxic or inadequate parents like me, this matters. We've been conditioned to avoid all suffering, to demand safe spaces externally, but the only real safety is what you cultivate inside yourself with your own inner child. Their approval is foundational, not conditional - you don't have to earn love through people-pleasing. Eventually, they bless your independence instead of trying to keep you small. When you miss out on this kind of fathering, you can end up defensive, approval-seeking, or struggling with boundaries. The healing work means learning to reparent yourself and give yourself what you didn't get. You need safe relationships to help your intuition grow back - toxic people just shut it down. Trauma also disconnects you from your body, which is actually a huge part of how you receive intuitive messages. Good boundaries keep the drama out so you can actually hear what your inner wisdom is trying to tell you.
