The Redemptive Edge: Returning to the Father’s Rest| Derek Peters
In this moving exploration of divine restoration, Derek Peters traces the metaphor of the two-edged sword from the gates of Eden to the empty tomb of Jesus. He explains that the flaming sword, which initially guarded the way to the Tree of Life, was never intended to be an instrument of permanent exclusion, but rather a protection of the way back to a right relationship with God. By connecting the cherubim at the garden’s entrance to those atop the Mercy Seat and finally to the angels at the resurrection, the sermon illustrates how God surgically uses His Word to cut away the "I am not" narratives of shame and inadequacy that hinder the believer. Ultimately, the message serves as a warm invitation for every person to stop hiding in the shadows of their failures and instead embrace their true identity in Christ, moving from a life of striving into a deep, abiding rest found in the Father’s extravagant love.Referenced Scriptures:Genesis 1:26Genesis 3:21-24Exodus 25:17-22John 20:11-17Philippians 1:6Hebrews 4:9-16John 15:7

Faithful Generosity: Embracing the Mission Beyond Tradition | Carl Mutzelburg
The sermon reflects on Gateway City Church's seven-year journey of witnessing God’s unwavering faithfulness and the collective call to step beyond comfortable traditions into a greater mission. It emphasizes that while traditions provide a sense of belonging and honor the past, they must never overshadow the urgent task of sharing the gospel both locally and globally. Drawing from the example of the Macedonian churches, the message explores "kingdom math," where rich generosity isn't born from outward abundance but flows from a heart of overwhelming joy even in the midst of severe trials. Ultimately, the congregation is invited to offer not just their finances, but their very selves, trusting that when they give what they are able—and even a little beyond—God performs miracles of provision that pave the way for the "greater things" He has promised for the city and the world.Referenced Scriptures:Matthew 9:36-38: Jesus’ compassion for the harassed and helpless crowds and the call for workers for the plentiful harvest.Luke 15: The parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son, highlighting that every person is valuable to God.John 3:16: The foundational motivation for giving: God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.John 6: The miracle of the loaves and fishes, illustrating how God multiplies a sacrificial offering.John 20:21: The commission of the disciples: "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."2 Corinthians 8:1-5: The example of the Macedonian churches whose extreme poverty and joy welled up in rich generosity.1 John 4:19: The reminder that we love and give because He first loved us.

The Only Way Home: A Heart for the Father | Jason Elsmore
In this earnest exploration of John 14, Pastor Jason invites the congregation into a deeper understanding of Jesus as The Way, The Truth, and The Life, emphasizing that while His claim is exclusive, His invitation is radically inclusive. By contrasting the disobedience of the first Adam in the Garden of Eden with the triumphant obedience of Jesus, the "second Adam," in Gethsemane, Jason illustrates how Christ paved a unique and necessary path to restore our relationship with God. He reassures us that although there is only one way to the Father, there is "plenty of room" in the Father’s house for everyone, reflecting a God who never pushes us away but constantly draws us closer with compassion and mercy. The sermon challenges believers to move beyond religious pluralism or mere inspiration and to fully embrace the unique reality of Christ’s incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection. Ultimately, Jason calls the community to walk in the ways of Jesus—through serving the marginalized and giving generously—believing that as they align their lives with His Lordship, they will witness the "greater things" God has promised for their city and the world.Referenced Scriptures:John 14:6Psalm 113:7-82 Corinthians 8:2John 14:1-3Romans 5:18-19Deuteronomy 30:19-20John 14:9-12John 1:18

Known by Name: Positioning Our Hearts to Hear the Good Shepherd | Carl Mutzelburg
In this message, Pastor Carl explores the profound intimacy of Jesus’ declaration, "I am the good shepherd," emphasizing that true life is found not in mere information, but in a relationship defined by listening and positioning. Drawing a contrast between modern industrial farming and the personal, protective nature of Middle Eastern shepherding, the sermon highlights how the sheep’s safety and provision are entirely dependent on their ability to recognize and respond to the shepherd’s unique voice. He challenges the congregation to consider how the noise and hurry of modern life often crowd out the Good Shepherd’s whispers, suggesting that our ability to hear God is directly linked to how we position ourselves through scripture, silence, and a willingness to obey. Ultimately, the message finds its heart in the staggering truth that the Shepherd knows each person by name and has already demonstrated his ultimate love by laying down his life in their place, inviting everyone to move beyond spiritual dullness into the abundant life he provides.Referenced Scriptures:John 10:1–18 (The Parable of the Good Shepherd)John 20:31 (Purpose of John’s Gospel)Psalm 23 (The Lord is My Shepherd)John 1:1 (The Word was God)John 1:9 (The True Light)Romans 5:6–8 (Christ Died for the Ungodly)

The Light of Life: Finding Truth in a World of Shadows | Hamish Gomersall
In this exploration of Jesus' identity, Hamish examines the weight of the Savior’s declaration as the light of the world, contrasting the superficial "truths" of modern culture with the exclusive and inclusive nature of Christ. Drawing on the historical backdrop of the Festival of Tabernacles, the sermon illustrates how Jesus positioned Himself as the fulfillment of the ancient pillar of fire that once led Israel, yet He now seeks to illuminate the darkness within the human heart rather than just the circumstances surrounding it. The message emphasizes that following this light requires a difficult but necessary course: a total surrender of the self and a symbolic death at the cross to overcome personal sin and pride. Ultimately, Hamish concludes that this path leads to the beautiful possession of resurrection life—a continuous, life-long process of becoming like Christ and experiencing an enduring dividend of peace, joy, and love that far surpasses the world’s fleeting happiness.Referenced Scriptures:Psalm 34Psalm 63:1–5Exodus (The Pillar of Fire)John 8:12Acts 2 (Pentecost)Philippians 1:6

The Anchor of Consistency: Walking with an Unchanging God |Hannah White
We have often found ourselves chasing "mountaintop experiences," those high-energy moments of spiritual euphoria, only to realize that the true beauty of faith lies in a steady, daily walk with Jesus. In our journey through the shifting seasons of life—the laughter, the mourning, the building, and the tearing down—it is easy to mistake our changing emotions for God's distance. However, we’ve learned that while our feelings are often like shifting smoke or vapor, Jesus remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. By cultivating a "secret place" of quiet intimacy, anchoring ourselves in the truth of Scripture rather than our fleeting moods, and learning the raw honesty of lament, we can maintain a consistent connection with the Father. Ultimately, we were created to walk with Him in the "cool of the day," discovering that His presence isn't just for the highlights, but for every ordinary moment in between.Referenced Scriptures:* Ecclesiastes 3:1–13* Joel 2:12–13* Psalm 91:1–2* Romans 12:15* Isaiah 41:10* Psalm 23:4* Psalm 46:1* Psalm 118:6* John 14:27* Deuteronomy 31:6* Psalm 13* John 1:12* Genesis 3:8

Seeking God in Every Season | Christine Wood
In this message we are invited to explore the shifting landscapes of our spiritual lives through the lens of Psalm 63, recognizing that our walk with God is less like a fleeting crop and more like a maturing fruit tree that grows stronger through every cycle. Whether we find ourselves in a "desert season" characterized by thirst and a need for clarity, a "sanctuary season" where we must invest the surplus of God’s visible blessings, a "dark season" of quiet, lonely battles, or a "season of victory" where we stand against the enemy’s lies, the constant remains God’s unwavering presence. By reflecting on the resilience of figures like Mary, Hagar, and even modern-day spiritual mothers, we learn that seeking God is not reserved for the easy times but is a vital, daily commitment to turning our worries into worship. Ultimately, when we anchor ourselves in the truth of who He is, we become like trees planted by streams of water—steadfast, fruitful, and deeply known by the God who sees us in every circumstance.Referenced Scriptures:* Psalm 63* Luke 1 (The Magnificat)* Genesis 16* Genesis 21* Psalm 1:1–3

Sustained by the Eternal: Finding True Life in Jesus | Carl Mutzelburg
In reflecting on Jesus’ profound declaration in John 6, Pastor Carl is struck by the invitation to move beyond a life of mere existence—bios—into the vibrant, quality life of zoe that only He provides. Throughout our week, it is so easy to chase after "bread that spoils," exhausting ourselves for material security or external recognition that ultimately fails to satisfy our deepest cravings. Even our religious efforts and "works" can become a form of manna that we try to hoard, missing the heart of the Gospel: that God’s grace is a gift to be received through faith, not a wage to be earned. Jesus identifies Himself as the Bread of Life, urging us to move beyond the transactional and into a personal relationship where we find our nourishment in His presence, His word, and His sacrifice. My prayer for us is that we would stop asking what we must "do" and instead lean into the one who has already given His life for the world, discovering that He is truly more than enough for every hunger of our souls.Referenced Scriptures:Zephaniah 3:17Psalm 84Exodus 16:20Matthew 4:4John 4:34John 6:26-27John 6:28John 6:32John 6:35John 6:47-51John 6:53-59John 6:60John 6:68John 12John 15Ephesians 2:8-9

Beyond the Shore: Finding Faith in the Eye of the Storm | Carl Mutzelburg
In this message, we explore the profound truth that our faith is often forged not on the mountaintops of miraculous provision, but in the dark, exhausting stretches of life’s storms. Drawing from the account of Jesus walking on the water in John 6, we are reminded that Jesus sometimes purposefully sends us into difficult seasons—not to abandon us, but to stretch our spiritual muscles and challenge our limited comprehension of who He truly is. We see that when we reach the end of our own strength, having rowed until we are completely spent, Jesus reveals Himself as the great "I Am," transcending our natural paradigms and proving He is bigger than any circumstance we face. Pastor Carl's heart’s desire for us is that we would not just admire Him from a distance or hold Him at arm's length, but willingly invite Him into the very boat of our lives, trusting that His presence transforms our journey and immediately brings us to the destination He has appointed for us.Referenced Scriptures:Psalm 40John 6:1-15John 6:16-21Psalm 23Exodus 3Psalm 107

Encountering the God Who Remakes Us | Hamish Gomersall
The sermon delivered on Palm Sunday examined the profound implications of encountering Jesus Christ, specifically through the narrative of the healing of the man born blind as recorded in the Gospel of John. The discourse posited that biblical encounters function as both historical records and theological frameworks, intended to facilitate a contemporary living encounter with the Divine. Central to this message was the assertion that Jesus acts as the primary initiator; just as the blind man could not perceive Christ without Christ first approaching him, humanity requires a divine revelation to overcome spiritual blindness. Furthermore, the speaker addressed the complexities of human suffering, suggesting that rather than seeking to assign blame for tragedy, believers should view Christ as a Redeemer who imbues pain with purpose. This was exemplified by the transformative power of forgiveness demonstrated by the Abdallah family, whose decision to entrust their grief to God led to widespread spiritual restoration. The sermon also highlighted Jesus’ role as a "Remaker" of creation, drawing a parallel between the use of dust in the miraculous healing and the original creation of humanity in Genesis to show that God seeks to restore, rather than discard, what is broken. Ultimately, the message concluded with a dual observation: a warning against the spiritual blindness that results from repeatedly rejecting divine initiative, and an encouragement that an encounter with God requires only a singular, incremental step of faith.Referenced ScripturesMark 11:8-10John 9:1-12Genesis 2:7

The Promise of a King | Dave Morrow
The promise of an eternal kingdom ruled by a royal descendant was not a small promise, but a foundational one that shaped the hope of a nation. They saw many kings come and go through the generations that failed to worship God and rule with justice. Instead, they worshipped manmade idols and used their power to crush the powerless. Sadly, as their kings turned awayfrom God, so did the people they ruled. Despite the unfaithfulness of the people, God was faithful to His promise to send a baby born in a manger but worshipped by the kings of the earth. ________________________ If you need prayer, we're here for you. Having a place in the heart of the city to proclaim the truth of Jesus practically share the love of Christ through care and hospitality (e.g. care ministries and international ministries) has been central to our existence. And our deepest desire is that this will only continue to grow as we seek to meet the growing practical and spiritual needs of Brisbane. -----------Gateway Baptist Church meets across six locations in South-East Queensland and online. For over 90 years, we've been committed to guiding people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus.Learn more about us at https://gatewaybaptist.com.au or join us on Sundays at gtwy.au/live

Bringing Life to the City | Andrew Sercombe
God has called us as his people to invest our very lives into the heart of the city. In a context where others are transient and transactional, we have been called to live our lives, raise up the next generations, buy homes and find work in and around the city. Our presence matters deeply, because we bring the presence of God. In our workplaces. In our schools and universities. In the restaurants and shopping malls. On the streets. Our presence causes the city to prosper. Our commitment to be a permanent presence in the city matters deeply. As we make the commitment to live and share our lives in the city, we are proclaiming the life-giving good news of Jesus.-----------Gateway Baptist Church meets across six locations in South-East Queensland and online. For over 90 years, we've been committed to guiding people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus.Learn more about us at https://gatewaybaptist.com.au or join us on Sundays at gtwy.au/live

The Lamb | Andrew Sercombe
Writing to a church struggling under powerful forces, the last thing that you would imagine worthy of worship is a lamb! But that is exactly what is presented in John’s vision. Again, utilizing this rich metaphor that is replete throughout Scripture, Johnpresents a lamb slain that makes a way for the scroll to be opened. What is this scroll? The book of life that records all names of those who are God’s people. It is the death of the Lamb that makes a way for ‘persons from every tribe and language and people and nation’. This picture sets up a scene of absolute adoration, worship and praise. The death of Jesus has made a way. He is deserving of our worship.--------Gateway Baptist Church meets across six locations in South-East Queensland and online. For over 90 years, we've been committed to guiding people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus.Learn more about us at https://gatewaybaptist.com.au or join us on Sundays at gtwy.au/live

The Beast | Andrew Sercombe
Revelation is a stark and powerful picture of the battle that rages for our hearts and minds. But the wonderful news is that the Dragon and his beasts will not win. His fate is sealed. Praise the Lord, the battle has been fought and won – but that is a story for next week!--------Gateway Baptist Church meets across six locations in South-East Queensland and online. For over 90 years, we've been committed to guiding people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus.Learn more about us at https://gatewaybaptist.com.au or join us on Sundays at gtwy.au/live

The Bride | Ben Dainton
We find in the early chapters that John’s Apocalypse is a letter that is written to seven churches in Asia Minor, but also a letter to be read aloud for all (and all are blessed in reading 1:3). Indeed, these are words of encouragement and challenge from Jesus himself. The call is for the Church, the Bride (19:7-8), to remain pure in the context of temptation and persecution, and to ultimately be victorious (5:5-6). The church in the Roman empire was under intense pressure. The emperors (e.g. Domitian, Nero) demanded absolute and singular worship. To not declare ‘Caesar as Lord’ carried with it terrible physical, social and economic consequences. This was a question of ultimate allegiance: worship the Christian God or worship the Roman cult.---------Gateway Baptist Church meets across six locations in South-East Queensland and online. For over 90 years, we've been committed to guiding people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus.Learn more about us at https://gatewaybaptist.com.au or join us on Sundays at gtwy.au/live

Alpha and Omega | Andrew Sercombe
Revelation has possibly become the most discussed and speculated on, if not the most controversial, of all books in the Bible. This is not that surprising, considering the incrediblyabstract literary images that are contained in this wonderful piece of writing. A four-week teaching series is not going to come close to answer all the questions that could be addressed, but what we can do is focus on the key characters and themes that we can find in this powerful book. Firstly, it is helpful to understand that Revelation is a mix of literary styles. It is a prophetic text following in the tradition of Old Testament prophets, it is an apocalyptic work full of symbolic imagery, and it is a situational letter written to a group of people living within the historical and societal context of the Roman Empire.-------Gateway Baptist Church meets across six locations in South-East Queensland and online. For over 90 years, we've been committed to guiding people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus.Learn more about us at https://gatewaybaptist.com.au or join us on Sundays at gtwy.au/live
