CAN YOU TRUST YOUR MEMORY? The Science of Metamemory

Send us Fan MailCAN YOU TRUST YOUR MEMORY? The Science of Metamemory YOUR NEW HIRE'S MEMORY IS NOT A TRAINING SYSTEM: What Metamemory Can Teach Managers About Learning & Performance Metamemory is the part of thinking and a subcategory of the executive function, metacognition, that helps us understand, monitor and manage our own memory. It is how we know we are likely to forget a name, a task on our to-do list, or to follow-up on a critical assignment. Forgetting is easy to notice. What is harder to notice is the quiet mental work that happens before, during and after remembering. That quiet work is known as metamemory. Metamemory is one of the lesser-known skills tied to executive functioning, and it plays a major role in learning, daily routines, confidence and independence. It does not get as much attention as focus, planning, or self-control, but it belongs in the same conversation. Metamemory is easy to miss because it works behind the scenes. Yet it shapes many parts of daily life. It helps a person know when to trust memory, when to check it and when to use a support. A strong memory is helpful. A strong understanding of memory may be even more useful. The main takeaway is simple: forgetting is not always the whole problem. Sometimes the missing skill is knowing how memory is doing in the first place. When people learn to predict, monitor and support their own memory, they gain more than recall. They gain control.rogersresearchglobal.com

MIND BODY DISCONNECTION: The Often Hidden Cost of Success

Send us Fan MailMIND BODY DISCONNECTION: The Often Hidden Cost of Success LIFE IN FOCUS SUBSTACK MIND BODY DISCONNECTION: The Often Hidden Cost of SuccessThe very drive that got you here- the hustle, the grind, the constant push, may be the same force quietly pulling you away from your overall health and well-being!We often hear about the mind-body connection, a term that rose to prominence in the late 20th century as science began confirming the intricate link between mental and physical health.  But what happens when that connection grows quiet? When success is rising, yet your internal signals are fading? When achievement accelerates at the very same pace as disconnection?Few would disagree that awareness, presence and alignment cultivate an internal state of equanimity and inner harmony. And yet, even with this understanding, self care,  a collective term describing the practice of living in tune with these principles, is too often reduced to a passing nod rather than a sustained way of being.High achievers often pride themselves on mental toughness and resilience. This mindset can make it difficult to recognize or admit when levels of stress are slowly rising. The silent disconnect happens when the mind pushes forward, ignoring or minimizing what the body signals. Sometimes the signals of overwhelm, anxiety and stress are misinterpreted as focus, drive and productivity, believing what they are feeling inside is necessary in order to be as successful as they are. Reasons why high achievers may not feel what their body knows include:·       Mental focus on goals can overshadow bodily discomfort.·       Cultural or personal beliefs about strength may discourage acknowledging stress.·       Fear of appearing weak can lead to suppressing symptoms.·       Lack of awareness about how chronic stress manifests physically.rogersresearchglobal.com

BRAIN HEALTH & DEMENTIA PREVENTION: How Yoga Can Help

Send us Fan MailThe mind-body connection refers to the dynamic interaction between our mental and emotional states and our physical health. In the context of dementia prevention and care, this connection highlights how practices that calm the nervous system—like yoga—may influence brain function, mood regulation, and overall cognitive resilience. This episode explores the role of yoga as a proactive component of healthcare. Increasingly recognized for its capacity to address key risk factors associated with chronic illness, yoga promotes overall health, resilience, and vitality. Although further research is warranted to clarify its long-term impact on specific medical conditions, emerging evidence supports the integration of yoga into preventative health protocols. A critical question remains: might these benefits extend to cognitive health, particularly in the context of dementia? Preliminary findings suggest that the answer is yes.The Connection Between Yoga and Brain HealthYoga's combination of physical postures, breath control, meditation, and ethical principles creates a holistic approach to health. Studies have shown yoga practice positively impacts brain health, particularly areas related to memory and cognitive function. 1.    Enhancing Cognitive FunctionResearch indicates that physical exercise can enhance neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to adapt and reorganize itself. Yoga's unique blend of physical activity and mind-body connection has been linked to improved cognitive performance. Yoga may also increase the size of the hippocampus, a brain region connected with memory and learning. Since the hippocampus is one of the first areas affected by Alzheimer's disease, maintaining its size through activities like yoga could be beneficial. In addition, yoga's neuroprotective effects may be due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Chronic inflammation is linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia. 2.    Reducing Stress and AnxietyYoga is widely recognized for its stress-relief benefits. Chronic stress can lead to inflammation and cognitive decline. Yoga promotes relaxation and endorphin release, contributing to a calmer state of mind. 3.    Promoting MindfulnessMindfulness is a key component of yoga practice. Focusing on the present moment enhances cognitive resilience. Research has demonstrated that mindfulness can improve attention, memory, and emotional regulation.https://www.rogersresearchglobal.com/post/brain-health-dementia-prevention-how-yoga-can-helphttps://www.linkedin.com/pulse/10-smart-ways-support-your-brain-lower-dementia-risk-rogers-ph-d--yrnqe/?trackingId=7zyFSlH%2BRwKBEIl4u%2F4h6g%3D%3Drogersresearchglobal.com

Today’s episode is your invitation to reclaim your creative spark. In today's episode, we will be exploring:     What is creativity?    Why we should explore it?    What is its relationship with stress management?    What is its relationship with executive functioning?    What is its relationship with being in the flow state or in the zone?     Neuroplasticity: How creativity is good for your brain and nervous system!      3 Main creativity blockers.      Mindfulness practice to help tap into or enhance creativity. In essence, Creativity is self-expression in motion. It is the transformation of an idea into reality, and is the energy behind the inspiration that turns our personal, internal light on. Creativity is weaved within us, incorporating a dynamic and innovative part of our being that helps bring fulfillment and meaning to our lives. Some of us connect more deeply with creativity than others. It not only has to do with the arts and design, but also with effective and productive problem solving, strategizing and business development. While we can appreciate the exquisite sequencing of written words of great authors and musical notes of great composers, and the bringing of a vision to life of talented artists, photographers, and filmmakers, these obvious expressions of celebrated creativity are only but a few examples. Great parents, teachers, and leaders use creativity in their management of the home, classroom, and work environment, respectively.  AmazonCAPTURING CREATIVITY: One Idea at a Time LinkedIn ArticleFLOWING INTO A GAMMA STATE OF MIND: Why Entering the Zone Feels GreatHEAVILY MEDITATED: The Neuroscience of Meditation Rogers Research Article Blog THE POWER OF CREATIVITY: How to Unlock & Unleash Its PotentialAFTERNOON MEDITATION to MAXIMIZE PRODUCTIVITY & EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS: Recharge Your Mind & Enhance Focus in Just MinutesLIFE IN FOCUS PODCASTPart I: The Neuroscience of MeditationPart II: Your Relaxation Journeyrogersresearchglobal.com

Part I The NEUROSCIENCE of MEDITATION: HEAVILY MEDITATED

Send us Fan MailMeditation is more than just sitting in silence—it’s a practice of turning your attention inward, becoming aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations with curiosity, compassion, and without judgment. In a world that moves so quickly, meditation offers a pause—a moment to reconnect with yourself and what I like to refer to as a time-in. Historically, the enigmatic practice of meditation, which is rooted in deep cultural and religious history, was observed as a pathway toward enlightenment. In modern times, however, it’s more commonly used to manage anxiety and stress and more of a pathway toward relaxation. There are many different types of meditation, mostly falling under the categories of guided and unguided (or silent) meditations. There is not a universally accepted or “best” method, but there are components to meditation that are consistent across practices.  These include:Focused attentionBreath awarenessA Quiet and comfortable settingAnd an Attitude of non-judgment or "observer"A regular meditation practice has been shown to increase self-awareness, reduce negative cognitions and emotions, and increase creativity. So, how does one meditate? Why should we meditate? What are meditation's benefits? Take a listen!  ARTICLES  by Dr. Rogers HEAVILY MEDITATED: The Neuroscience of Meditationhttps://www.linkedin.com/pulse/heavily-meditated-neuroscience-meditation-marie-t-rogers-ph-d-/?trackingId=6zc27QzrRku7FjaH0uep%2Fg%3D%3DAFTERNOON MEDITATION to MAXIMIZE PRODUCTIVITY & EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS: Recharge Your Mind & Enhance Focus in Just Minuteshttps://www.rogersresearchglobal.com/post/afternoon-meditation-to-maximize-productivity-executive-functions-recharge-your-mind-enhance-foJOURNALS  by Dr. Rogers Available on AMAZON and other ONLINE BOOK SELLERSFLOWING into the GRATITUDE ZONE: My Daily Journaling Practice LIFE IN FOCUS: A Self-Discovery Journal for Powerful TransformationPOWERFUL MANIFESTATION : Bringing Your Vision to Life Through Intention Setting, Gratitude & Self-Reflection rogersresearchglobal.com

And, more importantly, we should go!As humans, we were not meant to live the same day, every day, in the same way, without adding healthy doses of variety and adventure. Just as we were not meant to live dull lives, we were certainly not meant to live in a manner too many are currently describing as "stressed out."A CHANGE IN SCENERY IS GOOD FOR THE BRAINThe benefits of traveling are plentiful. Traveling boosts both mental and physical health. It resets and recalibrates our lives, which serves to enhance productivity and creativity, while reducing debilitating feelings of stress and burnout. Also, when traveling to destinations of different cultures, it connects us with our humanity. We not only learn about our differences, but also of our similarities. We create moments that translate into memories. These memories become part of our personal repertoire and collection of experiences that we will happily share and look back upon with fondness. THE HEALING EFFECTS OF SOUND & MUSIC: Enhancing Mood, Energy and Well-Being

Send us Fan MailThe doctor’s prescription in the future, inspired by medicine from the past, may involve 15 (or more) minutes of healing music, as needed per day. Sound and music are essentially a non-invasive, simple, and cost-effective healing intervention. Whether we travel around the world or back in time, we will find music. Music has been known to capture a mood, punctuate an experience, stamp a time! To enjoy, neither formal training in theory nor practice is required. While interest in music is universal, musical taste is an individual experience and tends to be heavily influenced by one's generation and culture. Depending on the type of music we are listening to, we can feel energized, mellow, happy, sad, nostalgic, aroused, loving, angry, powerful, peaceful and/or a combination of any of these emotions. But, what is music, exactly? Music, simply stated, is a sequence of coordinated sounds. As with language, music involves combining the perception and production of hierarchically arranged sequential information. The good news is that the integration of music and sound therapy in our daily lives is a fairly easy way to instantly feel better. Although chronic stress and its debilitating effects will not be remedied by one simple intervention and require a holistic and functional analysis of our lives, incorporating a few minutes per day of music and/or sound therapy is an effortless step toward progress. Feeling even a little better increases the likelihood we will attempt to tackle the more significant challenges in our lives. Send us Fan Mail"And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” – Oscar WildeThe more connected we are with nature, the less connected we will be to stress. Our natural world is our playground and whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or a homebody, or somebody somewhere in the middle, we all, to some degree, crave the outdoors. Nature is one of the best stress management interventions we have as time spent outdoors can generate many positive emotions such as calmness and serenity, joy, and creativity. It also boosts concentration and focus. Time spent in nature has been shown to lower blood pressure and stress hormone levels, improve immune functioning and mood, and reduce feelings of anxiety. rogersresearchglobal.com

NEUROPLASTICITY OR NEWROPLASTICITY? People Can & Do Change Through Experience

Send us Fan MailPeople Can & Do Change Through ExperienceOne of the greatest myths many believe and often goes unchallenged is that "people don't change."  If this were true, then there would be no need for personal development seminars, psychotherapy, life coaching, leadership development courses, or any other self-motivating or self-enhancing activity, via books, journals, audiotapes, and on-line courses. Since self-improvement is a multi-billion dollar industry, it stands to reason that this cliche is simply untrue and needs to be put to rest. While for some, this concept is valid, but as far as a general statement, we need to re-think this one as advancements in neuroscience (CONNECTOMES & CONNECTOMICS); specifically NEUROPLASTICITY indicate otherwise. What we know about the brain today versus 25 + years ago (while in my neuropsychology Ph.D. program) is truly extraordinary. Each and everyday there are wonderful discoveries about our amazing information processing center. What was for hundreds of years viewed as localization of function, we are now learning that the brain is simply too complex for such basic explanations. However, it was an excellent starting point and provided the impetus for the research and technology available to us today. In the human brain, billions of neurons form trillions of connections to each other — connections & calculations that, ironically, are far too staggering for the human brain to understand. rogersresearchglobal.com

OVERCOMING COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS THROUGH YOUR EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS: Thinking Your Way to Better Living

Send us Fan MailClarity in thinking amplifies wisdom.Your brain is constantly processing information, and does so with lightning speed. It quickly decides what stimuli to attend to and what to ignore. How the information is processed will determine the degree to which you feel focused, serene, calm, anxious, stressed, and/or discombobulated.Your executive functions are key to critical reasoning and problem solving. Critical reasoning and problem solving are negatively correlated with cognitive distortions.  As one goes up, the other goes down. In today’s episode, we are going to discuss cognitive distortions, connect these with the executive functions, and help suggest ways to clearer thinking and better living.rogersresearchglobal.com

Psychoneuroimmunology: Connecting the Mind & Body for Greater Energy & Health

Send us Fan Mailhttps://drmarierogers.blogspot.com/2021/09/stress-immune-system-executive.htmlTHE VAGUS NERVE AND THE SYMPATHETIC & PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEMSIn this episode, we unlock the mystery of our brain and nervous system in an effort to deepen our understanding of stress and immune functioning. Connecting our brain to different parts of our head, neck, and trunk are the 12 pairs of cranial nerves, each named for their structure and function. We are most interested in the 10th cranial nerves, the vagus nerve. Possessing both sensory and motor functions, it is the longest cranial nerve in the body (extending from head to abdomen). It communicates information from the ear canal, which contains the vestibulocochlear nerve, and parts of the throat. The throat plays an important role in calming the nervous system. By just simply humming, whether a tune or the equivalent of the Om mantra (familiar to yoga practitioners) https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/healing-benefits-music-sound-marie-t-rogers-ph-d-/?trackingId=fbAtsMe6S6etIg1C8wUv%2BA%3D%3D, the vagus nerve will be stimulated. Since it is the fundamental regulator of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), its stimulation is directly associated with relaxation. The PNS is responsible for rest and digest, and its counterpart, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is responsible for fight-or-flight, or freeze. rogersresearchglobal.com

Growing research supports its role in stress management, anxiety regulation, and enhanced cognitive and interpersonal functioning. Introduction into Executive Functioning

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, you will be invited to participate in a mini,"What do you know about your brain" quiz. In addition to some fun facts, you will also be asked to self-reflect and  do an executive function self-evaluation. In just 10 minutes, you will have the necessary information about your brain's executive functions , which will allow you to strategize actions moving forward in order to help align with your goals and purpose. The Executive Functions & NeuroplasticityThe skills required for achieving success are interconnected, complex and coordinated. Collectively, they  are referred to as executive functioning. They are your control or supervisory center, located within the frontal and prefrontal lobes of your brain, representing a fairly large area consuming approximately 1/3 of the brain’s cortical geography. These crucial skills incrementally evolve as you navigate through the developmental stages, reaching a full appreciation of their maturity in your mid 20s. However, the story does not end here.  Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change and adapt as a result of experience, means you are always capable of optimizing your functioning! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7X9ycSj3Dcrogersresearchglobal.com
