    61. From "Gotcha" to Growth: Rethinking Teacher Observations, an interview with Craig Randall

When most teachers hear the word ‘observation,’ it doesn’t exactly bring a sense of excitement or growth. It brings pressure and performance, and for many teachers, the feeling of being judged rather than supported. But what if observations could actually do what they were originally intended to do: help teachers grow, reflect, and feel more confident in their practice? In this conversation, I’m joined by Craig Randall, who specializes in trust-based observation models that aim to shift evaluations from a ‘gotcha’ moment into something far more meaningful and human-centered. We’re talking about why traditional evaluation systems often miss the mark, how trust completely changes what happens in a classroom, and what teachers can do (even within imperfect systems) to make observations feel a little less performative and a lot more productive.Craig Randall is the developer and author of Trust-Based Observations, an Amazon number-one bestseller in five countries. Craig has spent the last 30-plus years in education working as a counselor, coach, teacher, and principal.Craig spends the majority of his time training school leaders in Trust-Based Observations (TBO), building mastery, and transforming the world of teacher observations to a model of trust and support that fosters growth mindsets, cultures of trust, and creates collective teacher efficacy in action. To connect with Craig and learn more about his book and resources for Trust-Based Observations, check out the links below:Website: https://trustbased.com/X: https://x.com/TrustbasedCraigLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/trustbasedcraig/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/craig.randall.7311Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trustbasedcraig/Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/trustbasedcraig.bsky.socialHave a question or idea for a future episode on teacher burnout or classroom management? 60. Ways Teachers Can Manage Being Overstimulated By the Classroom

Do you feel like you have too many tabs open right now as a teacher? Stressed out and overwhelmed from the noise, stuff accumulating in your classroom, and hearing your students say your name on repeat? It's easy to become overstimulated as a teacher, especially as the school year comes to a close or right before the holidays. How do you combat the sensory overload and avoid starting your summer break on the brink of burnout? In this episode, you'll learn why it's important to address overstimulation instead of powering through the insanity and ways you can manage the craziness, no matter what the end of the school year throws at you.Other episodes related to this topic:58. 59. How to Deal with Feeling Unappreciated as a Teacher

Have you ever felt unappreciated as a teacher or discouraged by the current classroom conditions and expectations? Teaching can often feel like a thankless job, and many are leaving the classroom because the hours and demands of teaching have led them to choose another path. This episode, recorded during Teacher Appreciation Week, looks at what matters more than appreciation, because change and appreciation, in the form we seek, may never come. If we want to continue doing well for our students and honor ourselves, the validation needs to come from within. Have a question or idea for a future episode on teacher burnout or classroom management? Do you feel like you don't have a voice as a teacher to share your perspective or initiate change? What matters is how you choose to use it. In this episode, I share my TEDx experience, my journey from unlikely teacher to having the platform I have today, and important aspects that separate professional, grounded voices of reason from those that just make noise. If you've ever felt like you just have to keep on checking things off your to-do list right through Spring Break, this episode is for you. Whether your spring break is an entire week or just a few days, teachers look forward to a break from the classroom routine... only to fill their schedules with more work while they are off. While doing things that you've wanted to get accomplished is good, the urge to always be productive has its downside. Listen to learn why using Spring Break to be reflective on your own needs is important before heading into the end of the school year, and why teachers have a hard time with the pressure to be productive, even when they are away from the classroom.Have a question or idea for a future episode on teacher burnout or classroom management? There's a lot going on in the world that is making our most vulnerable students fear for their safety. They see things on the news, on social media, or even down the street where they live (maybe even at their front door) that are scary and violent. It's a lot for an adult to process, much less a child. This is a short episode about what to keep at the forefront in your classroom during troubling times to help your students feel safe. Please know that what you do every day, beyond what you teach, to help your students grow and become the people they are meant to be, matters more than you will ever know. Have a question or idea for a future episode on teacher burnout or classroom management? 43. Teaching Grammar in the Age of AI: An Interview with Patty McGee

It's no secret that artificial intelligence (AI) has changed how we can access information and perform tasks. While you may find the benefits and risks of using AI debatable, its ability to make the completion of work more efficient, for better or worse, is hard to deny. But what if you are a teacher who wants your students to learn how to write, and they use AI tools to complete their assignments instead of applying what you teach? Along with how social media has impacted communication, AI may feel like an impossible struggle when teaching your students to write and apply grammar skills. In this interview with national literacy consultant and author Patty McGee, we discuss how to teach students grammar in the availability of AI and strategies to make writing instruction relevant in the digital age.  You can learn more about how to integrate grammar instruction in the content area and more of Patty's resources at www.pattymcgee.orgGet your copy of Not Your Granny's Grammar: An Innovative Approach to Meaningful and Engaging Grammar Instruction here!Have a question or idea for a future episode on teacher burnout or classroom management? 35. Ways to Keep Student Behavior from Getting Out of Control During the Holidays

Nothing will cause teacher burnout faster than a classroom full of kids whose visions of candy bars and Halloween costumes dance in their heads. It can be a recipe for crazy, out-of-control student behavior when the holidays hit your classroom, but that doesn't mean it has to descend into sugar-infested chaos. Whether it's pumpkin season or your classroom is ready to jingle all the way, I'll discuss how to keep calm and maintain control so you can keep teaching and NOT lose your sanity before student behavior gets worse faster than you can eat a fun-sized Snickers.  Here's a link to a previous episode on my three favorite statements to say to students to manage behaviors. Start using them today!Whether it's Halloween or Valentine's Day, teaching doesn't have to break you. Teachaholic: The 7-Day MindSET Shift to Conquer Burnout, Build Life-Changing Boundaries, and Reignite Your Love for Teaching, is a #1 Best Seller and a #1 Top Release on Amazon. 26. How to Quit Being a People Pleasing Teacher

Are you a people pleaser? Teachers are often put in a position where they feel they aren't "good" or a team player if they don't try to agree to everyone's request. The trouble is, people pleasing is a sure way to end up in teacher burnout mode. You won't be happy, and you won't have the resources to do your best in the classroom. In this episode, I'll go into why we people please as teachers, how to stop people pleasing, and what to do instead of being a people pleasing teacher. # 13 How to Say "No"#5 Setting Goals and Boundaries#2 Why Boundaries are So ImportantHave a question or idea for a future episode on teacher burnout or classroom management?
