I say this to almost every client who works with us, and I realized I'd never actually said it on the podcast. So today I'm fixing that. If your salon was losing $2,000 every single month, would you actually know? I sit down this week (croaky voice and all) to ask the question most salon owners never stop to consider. What we cover: - Why most salon owners don't actually have a revenue problem - The visual I use that changes how you'll think about profit leaks for good - Why busy might be the most convincing disguise in your business - The phrases salon owners say to themselves that quietly cost the most - What actually separates the salons that build real wealth from the ones that don't Plus: details on a live, in-person workshop coming up where we go hunting for exactly where your profit is leaking. 114 - Your Accountant Just Called. You Owe The ATO More Than You Thought

Your accountant just called to update you on your tax bill. The number is way bigger than you were expecting. Before you spiral into panic or start blaming anyone, I want to talk about why this happens every single year and what to actually do about it. What we cover: - Why a bigger than expected tax bill is never actually a surprise, even though it feels like one - The real reason your profit and your bank balance never seem to match up - Why blaming your accountant is missing the real issue entirely - What separates business owners who pay their BAS in full from those who don't - The simple weekly habit that turns tax time into a non-event Plus: a client story about what happens the moment tax stops feeling like a crisis. What we cover: - Why your relationship with numbers might be quietly working against you - The shift in how you plan for money before it lands in the bank - What's really happening to margins right now, and why - The one financial number worth tracking before any other - Why this unexpected thing might be the missing piece in your week Plus: the real reason business transformation rarely happens overnight and what actually drives lasting change. 112 - What the Data Says Your Clients Are Actually Doing

Your clients haven't left the industry. But they have changed. Since mid-March, there's been a measurable shift in how salon clients are spending and this episode explains exactly what is happening. In this episode, we cover: • Why last-minute bookings are harder to fill and what the data says about it • The three economic shocks that caused clients to snap their wallets shut (and how they slowly open again) • Key stats: 74% of Australians have changed their shopping behaviour, and 87% are now budgeting for beauty treatments as planned spend, not impulse • Why this is not a "budget client" problem • The difference between discretionary spending slowing and clients leaving the industry (they're not the same thing) • What's actually showing up in salon KPI data: • Three things to focus on right now: Clients are still spending. They're just more intentional about where and with whom. The salons that understand this shift and adjust are the ones that come out ahead when the cycle turns. 111 - Why December Is Won or Lost in June

Christmas might feel a long way away, but for salon owners, the foundations for a stress-free December break are being laid right now. If you're tired of starting every year feeling behind, this episode will help you shift from scrambling to planning. In this episode, you'll learn: - Why most salon owners think about Christmas far too late - The hidden financial costs of your Christmas closure - How January and February cash flow challenges are often created months earlier - The difference between salon owners who stress through the holidays and those who genuinely switch off - How to calculate what your Christmas closure will actually cost - Why profitability and cash flow planning go hand-in-hand - A simple way to reverse-engineer your Christmas fund goal - How to use the next six months to create a more restful, profitable end to the year December doesn't become stressful overnight. For most salon owners, the pressure felt during the Christmas closure and the slow start to the new year is the result of decisions, or lack of planning, months earlier. The good news is that Christmas isn't a surprise. You already know most of the expenses that are coming. The opportunity now is to create a plan, improve profitability and start setting money aside before the pressure arrives. Ready to stop repeating the same financial cycle every year? If you're tired of feeling behind, unsure where the money goes, or struggling to create consistent profit and cash flow in your salon, it's time to make a change. 110 - The Language of Business; What Your Salon Is Trying to Tell You

Your salon is talking to you every day. The question is: do you understand what it's trying to say? In this episode, Laura explains why numbers are the language of business, how your salon is constantly sending signals about what's working (and what isn't) and why learning to interpret those signals is one of the most valuable skills a business owner can develop. In this episode, we cover: • Why so many salon owners feel disconnected from their numbers • The hidden risks of making decisions based on feelings instead of facts • The common business problems that financial data can reveal before they become major issues • Why revenue growth doesn't always translate into profit growth • How your numbers can help you make faster, more confident decisions • The role of an interpreter in helping salon owners understand what their business is really saying Your business is already telling you where the pressure points are. It's already revealing opportunities to improve profit, cash flow and performance. The challenge is knowing how to interpret the story. 109 - Your Salon Doesn't Need a Better Year. It Needs a Better Next 90 Days

As we hit the halfway point of the year, many salon owners are looking up and wondering where the last six months went. The goals were there in January. The intentions were there too. But somewhere between the busy season, the January-February slowdown, staff challenges, rising costs and trying to keep everything moving, the year has started to get away. In this episode, we cover: • Why the mid-year point is one of the most important moments in your salon calendar • The dangerous cycle that keeps salon owners repeating the same year over and over • Why making business decisions based on feelings instead of facts creates unnecessary stress • The three key areas every salon owner should review right now • How to identify the priorities that will create the biggest impact over the next 90 days Ready to identify what's really driving your profit and where your biggest opportunities are hiding? 108 - What Changes When You Finally Know Where the Money Goes

Most salon owners think their biggest financial stress is not having enough money. But after working with 70+ salon and clinic owners, I can tell you that’s not actually the problem. The real issue is not knowing where the money is going. And that lack of visibility creates something far more damaging than a low bank balance: uncertainty. The kind that leads to hesitation, second-guessing, and decision paralysis in every area of the business from hiring, pricing, service menus, even growth itself. In this episode of Prosper and Profit, I break down what actually changes when you finally understand your numbers and have proper financial systems in place. We cover: - Why it's not about spreadsheets or reports, there's something else much more important - What we consistently see clients experience once clarity clicks into place - The tangible shifts that happen as a result of knowing where the money goes This episode is your reminder that profit isn’t just about working harder or charging more. It’s about visibility, structure, and knowing exactly what your business is doing financially so you can actually lead it. If you’ve ever felt like you’re “busy but not sure where it all went,” this is the conversation that will change how you see your salon. And if you want help getting clarity in your own numbers, I’m hosting a free live 60-minute workshop: “Where Does the Money Go?” – Monday 15 June (with replay available) You can register via the link or DM me the word June26 and I’ll send you access. 107 - I Asked 70 Salon Owners Where Their Money Goes, Here's What They Said

There’s nothing more frustrating than looking at a fully booked calendar and still wondering where the money is going. Because busy does not automatically mean profitable. In this episode, we’re unpacking one of the biggest frustrations salon and clinic owners face: making good revenue but still feeling financial pressure behind the scenes. After working with more than 70 salon and clinic owners, I’ve seen the same patterns repeat over and over again. More often than not, it’s not a revenue problem. It’s a visibility problem. Inside this episode: Why busy salons can still struggle financially The hidden expense creep quietly draining profit How pricing decisions made around “competition” can hurt profitability Why some services are busier but less profitable than owners realise The team cost mistakes that create pressure on cashflow What productivity and booking rates actually tell you Real examples of salon owners finding profit leaks and improving cashflow Why clarity changes everything when it comes to business performance This episode is also your invitation to my free live workshop: Where Does the Money Go? Monday June 15 via Zoom We’ll break down: Where salon money actually disappears The biggest profit leaks I see across the industry The numbers salon owners should actually be paying attention to How to create more profit without necessarily working more hours There’ll also be live Q&A and a replay available. You can register via the link in the show notes or send me a DM on Instagram with the words JUNE26 and I’ll send you the details.

106 - The Most Expensive Thing in Your Salon Might Be Avoidance

There’s a version of your salon that feels calmer. More profitable. Less mentally exhausting to run. But most salon owners don’t get stuck because they don’t know what to do. They get stuck because of the things they keep putting off. The conversation. The decision. The numbers. The change. In this episode, we’re talking about the hidden cost of avoidance and why the most expensive thing in your salon might not be your rent, wages or stock… but the things you know need attention that keep getting pushed to “later.” Inside this episode: The subtle ways avoidance shows up in salon businesses Why “important but not urgent” tasks get ignored for months (or years) What delayed conversations and decisions are really costing your business Why team standards and client experience often slip slowly, not suddenly The simple shift that helps you stop carrying unnecessary pressure If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck in reactive mode or constantly thinking “I know I need to deal with that,” this episode will hit close to home. Because often the stress of avoiding something becomes heavier than actually addressing it. Apply to work together: https://laurajohagan.com/apply/

105 - Average Is Where Profit Dies

Most salon owners think their biggest problem is not having enough clients. But often, the real issue is much more subtle. Average. Average pricing. Average team performance. Average standards. Average decision-making. None of these seem dramatic on their own. In fact, average can feel safe because it sits comfortably in the middle of what everyone else is doing. But average is where profit dies. In this episode of the podcast, we'll talk about: • Why average feels safe but quietly erodes profitability • How small pricing gaps can compound into significant lost revenue • Where average team performance creates hidden profit leaks • Why the standards you set as a business owner determine your results • How incremental improvements can create extraordinary outcomes over time If your salon looks busy but still isn't delivering the profit, cashflow and owner pay you expected, this episode will help you understand why. 104 - Mindset Minute: The Identity Gap: Why Your Salon Isn’t Evolving

There is a version of your salon you can clearly see. It's profitable. Structured. Calm. Financially healthy. You know what it looks like. You know what it would feel like. So why does it still feel just out of reach? In many cases, the problem isn't a lack of effort. It isn't even a lack of strategy. It's the gap between the business owner you are today and the business owner your salon needs you to become. In this episode of the podcast, we'll talk about: • What the identity gap is and how it keeps salon owners stuck • Why knowing what to do is not the same as doing it • How pricing hesitation, weak boundaries and team issues can be identity problems • Why your business will only grow to the level you are consistently operating at • The questions to ask yourself that will help you close the gap and move forward If your salon isn't matching the vision you have for it, this episode will help you understand why. 103 - Client File: How Danielle Went From Guesswork to Profitable

In this episode I'm joined with Danielle the owner of DMR Hair Residence in Mackay, QLD. She opened in September 2020 right in the middle of a pandemic. Six years later, she was fully booked, covering her bills, paying herself a wage. And still feeling like something wasn't right. Not a crisis. Just that quiet sense that the reward wasn't matching the effort. That everything was running on guesswork. That a big bill could show up at any moment and she'd be scrambling to cover it. When a planned move to the Sunshine Coast was on the horizon, she knew it was time to get her ducks in a row. In this episode, we'll talk about: Why being fully booked and paying yourself still isn't enough The difference between paying yourself a wage and paying yourself a profit What it looks like to run a business on guesswork and what changes when you don't How Danielle used the program to prepare for a major life transition with clarity Sometimes things aren't falling apart. They're just not as rewarding as they should be. That's exactly where Danielle was. And this episode is her story. 102 - The Subtle Signs Your Salon Revenue Is About to Drop (Most Owners Miss These)

The shifts happening in salons right now aren't dramatic. They're quiet. What that means is they can be easy to miss. By the time a revenue drop shows up in your bank account, the clues were already there weeks, sometimes months earlier. Most owners just didn't know what to look for. In this episode, we'll talk about: • The early KPI shifts already showing up across salons right now • Why rebooking rate is one of the first signals and what it's telling you • How average client spend can drop while your books still look full • Why being busy can actually hide a growing revenue problem If you don't know what to look for in your numbers right now, this episode will show you exactly where to look. 101 - The Salons That Win in Uncertain Times (Do This)

In this episode we'll talk about what's actually happening in salons right now, what the numbers are starting to show and why pulling back or going into "watch and wait" mode is not a strategy. Things are shifting. Some salon owners are noticing that clients are hesitating. Rebooking is slower. Gaps between visits are stretching out. And a lot are doing the one thing that will make it worse, waiting to see what happens. In this episode, we'll talk about: • What's already showing up in salon KPIs right now • Why uncertain times are when your numbers matter most • The real cost of waiting, avoiding and hoping it passes • Why the salons that protect profit now are the ones that will navigate this Uncertain times don't hurt every business equally. The ones who are close to their numbers, protecting profit and making intentional decisions have options. The ones who are circling in a holding pattern, waiting for it to settle, they're already falling behind. If you're feeling like your stuck waiting, this episode is the one you need to hear right now. Looking for help to transform your business into the thriving, profitable business you know it could be? 100 - The Problem With More Clients to Fix Your Salon's Cashflow

In this episode, I break down a common misconception: that the answer to cashflow pressure is simply more clients. It makes sense on the surface, more bookings, more appointments means more revenue. But looking at the numbers closely shows a very different story. When your salon isn’t set up to be profitable, scaling revenue just magnifies the issues. More clients mean higher costs, more product usage, staff pressure and often, more stress for the owner. In this episode, we'll talk about: • Why chasing more clients can backfire • How underlying business structure impacts profitability • The hidden costs of acquiring clients • Why fixing the foundation is the real solution If you’ve been working harder but not seeing more profit, this episode will help you rethink how to make your salon financially healthy. 099 - Client File: The confidence that comes from financial clarity: Elsie from Blonde Baby

In this episode, I'm joined by Elsie Basterfield, a client who worked with us as she shares what it actually looked like behind the scenes. Elsie opened Blonde Baby in Tasmania in June 2024 knowing she wanted to do things differently this time and shares her journey to financial clarity. In this episode, we'll talk about: • Why previous coaching left Elsie stuck • The one area holding everything back • How she went from no clarity to leading a team of four • What changed when the numbers made sense Sometimes it's not about working harder or spending more on support. Sometimes you just need someone who speaks the language your business is actually running on. If you've ever felt behind while everything around you seems to be moving forward, Elsie's story is for you. 098 - The 5-Minute Check That Tells Me If a Salon Is Actually Profitable

In this episode, I share a common scenario I see with salon owners: fully booked teams, consistent revenue… but the owner still feeling a lot of financial pressure. Even when things look busy and profitable, many salon owners aren’t being financially rewarded for their work. And often, they don’t even realize how serious the issue is because peers and friends normalise the same experience. Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normal. In this episode, we'll talk about: • Why busy salons still struggle with cash flow • How comparing yourself to peers can hide real issues • Why revenue doesn’t always equal profit • Why now is the time to prioritize financial clarity If you’re working hard, fully booked but still feel like you’re chasing your tail, this episode will help you see what’s really happening in your numbers. 097 - Is Your Salon’s Problem the Slices… or the Size of the Cake?

In this episode, I share an analogy I often use with clients: slicing the cake vs growing the cake. Think of your salon revenue like a cake. Some salons are working with a cupcake. Some have an 8-inch cake. Some have a 14-inch cake. The question is: how is that cake being sliced? Many salon owners are working incredibly hard to bake the cake… but by the time everyone else has taken their slice, there’s nothing left for the owner. Profit First helps bring structure to that. It helps make sure the cake is sliced in a way that covers the essentials of a healthy business profit, owner’s pay, tax and operating expenses. But sometimes the issue isn’t just the slices. Sometimes the cake itself needs to grow. In this episode, we'll talk about: • What it means to “slice the cake” properly in a salon • Why expenses often take the whole cake • When it’s a structure problem vs a revenue problem • Why growing the cake doesn’t always mean more staff or work Sometimes the work is about slicing the cake differently. Sometimes the work is about baking a bigger cake. And often… it’s a combination of both. If you’ve been working hard but still feel like there’s nothing left over for you, this episode will help you see your numbers through a new lens. 094 - Mindset Minute: The Best Time Was 20 Years Ago. The Second Best Time Is Now.

This episode is a Mindset Minute which means a short episode on making an important mindset shift. We focus a lot on strategy here with numbers, decisions and action. However, something I learnt early on in business is that mindset and strategy move together. You need both tracks for the train to move. In this episode, I share a simple reminder: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.” It’s easy to think: • I should have done this sooner. • I can’t believe I missed this. • I should be further ahead. But that spiral keeps you stuck and often doesn't improve your business. Regret doesn’t move the business forward. You can plant the tree now. 093 - A Boring Salon Business Is a Profitable One: Why Calm Businesses Make More Money

In this episode, we’re talking about why “boring” is actually the goal and how stability, structure and predictability create more freedom than chaos. We’ll talk about: • Why rollercoaster businesses exhaust you • How structure reduces stress • Why boring business = better life From the outside, a salon can look like it’s thriving. But if it feels chaotic, unpredictable and mentally exhausting behind the scenes that’s not success. The goal isn’t constant adrenaline. It’s stability, simplicity and systems. 092 - If I Had to Protect My Salon’s Profit This Year, I’d Do These Unsexy Things

The industry is evolving. The economy is shifting. And being great at what you do is no longer enough on its own. In this episode we're going to dive into how to thrive in this envirobnment and what I would be focusing on to protect profit in my salon. We'll cover: • Why what got you here won’t take you to the next level • The unsexy habits that protect and grow profit • What I’d focus on right now to strengthen a salon business The common thread for salon owners who are thriving is that profit isn’t built in big, exciting moments. It’s built in disciplined, consistent ones. Tune in now if you’re ready to step up, strip away the noise, and focus on what actually moves the needle. 091 - Rapid Fire: Is It Really Worth Starting Profit First When I Am Setting Aside Such A Small Profit Amount?

This episode answer one common question in 15 minutes or less. Short, sharp, and focused on one thing that can genuinely shift how you think or what you do next. I often hear clients say something along the lines of: “Setting aside 1% or 3% or even 5% profit feels so small. Is it even worth it?” And I completely get that. Because when I first implemented Profit First years ago, I felt exactly the same way. So if you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not wrong for thinking it. But even though the number felt small, something important had already started to shift. This episode unpacks why those “small” percentages matter more than you think. Why setting aside profit, even when it feels insignificant, is the foundation for bigger change. And why this isn’t really about the dollar amount at the start, but about building a system that puts you back in control. Press play for a short, honest conversation that might completely change how you think about profit. 090 - 6 Questions Salon Owners Need To Ask Themselves In 2026

If you’ve been wondering where the podcast’s been, this episode starts with a little behind-the-scenes catch-up. Between school holidays, kids at home, and a very full January in the business, the podcast return needed a bit more space than I originally planned. But we’re back. ✨ Kids are back at school, routines have returned, and I’ve got my proper “on the business” days back. And honestly, that feels very good. From beach days, creek swims and local staycations, to a week away on the NSW north coast. That trip was paid for from my profit account, which I’ll be unpacking more in a future episode. What January looked like for us. We welcomed five new clients across hair, beauty, skin and aesthetics, which has been an incredibly strong start to the year and a real reminder of what’s possible when foundations are solid. Which leads perfectly into today’s conversation. As we head into 2026, one thing is clear. This is not a year for sitting on your hands and hoping things improve. We'll talk about: • Why 2026 will be a competitive year for salon owners • The patterns I’m seeing across both established and newer businesses • Why profitability is no longer optional if you want longevity • The mindset shifts required in today’s economic climate • And the six questions salon owners need to ask themselves to stay sustainable, confident and in control This isn’t about fear. It’s about awareness, intention, and making sure your salon is built for the environment we’re actually operating in now. If you want 2026 to feel different, press play and start with these questions. And if you find yourself listening and thinking, “This is exactly what I need to look at this year,” this episode is for you. 089 - Wrapping up 2025

As this episode drops, I know you’re coming through some absolutely massive weeks in the salon. Whether you’re squeezing in a few more days of work or you’ve already clocked off. I wanted to jump in and say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ❤️ I hope you get space to rest, recharge, reconnect and just be once the time comes and the chaos settles. This is our final episode for the year, and the podcast will be taking a little Christmas break too. Thank you for listening. Thank you for learning. Thank you for believing your salon deserves more. I'll see you in the new year. Rest up, enjoy the break, and have a beautiful Christmas. 🎄✨ Looking for help to transform your business into the thriving, profitable business you know it could be? 088 - Client Files: "I started having money in the bank and thought it was a problem" with Jools Purchase

In this episode, I am so excited to share this with you because today I’m joined by someone many of you already know and love, the incredible Jools. Jools is a colour specialist, educator for Goldwell Global, long-time salon owner and all-round big personality in the hair industry. She’s travelled the world teaching, she’s juggled more creative projects than most of us could imagine, and yes… she’s also the actual mascot for the Brisbane Broncos. But today’s conversation isn’t about the glossy highlight reel. It’s about the real stuff. The stuff you only talk about once you feel safe enough to say, “I need help.” We'll talk about: • What life in the salon truly looked like before we started working together the, overwhelm, the chasing-your-tail, the feeling of loving the work but dreading the business side. • Why she reached out (“I think my first message literally said: I need help.”) • How years of carrying things alone, including the shame of a painful past business experience, shaped the way she approached her salon • The mindset shifts that changed everything including stepping out of chaos, creating structure, and redefining what “success” needed to look like for her next season of life Jools story is one so many of you will resonate with, especially if you’re amazing at what you do… but secretly avoiding the business decisions that feel too heavy, too confusing, or too overwhelming to face on your own. Her honesty is brave, refreshing, and exactly why I love these Client Files episodes they remind us that behind every thriving salon owner is a human who’s had to do the inner work and the business work. This conversation is warm, real, funny and such a powerful reminder that you can rewrite your story at any stage of your career. Enjoy this one it’s special. 087 - How to Reflect on 2025 in the Salon and Reset for 2026

In today’s episode, we’re diving into something every salon owner has felt at some point money stress, shame and that sinking feeling of “Why isn’t this working?” We're in full December energy: busy salons, strong cashflow and the beginnings of that end-of-year reflection. Whether you listen now or during your Christmas break, this conversation will land exactly when it needs to. Inside the episode, we talk about: • Why money stress is normal and fixable • What to do if 2025 didn’t go as planned • The difference between structural business issues and personal ones • The patterns I’ve seen from 45+ salon and clinic owners this year from rising costs to seasonal lulls Here’s the reminder every salon owner needs: If you want a different result in 2026, you can’t repeat the same habits and structures from this year. And none of this means you are the problem. You were trained as a technician, not a business owner so of course there are skills no one ever taught you. This episode will help you reflect without blame, reset your thinking and head into 2026 with clarity and confidence. Tune in for a grounded, honest, and empowering wrap-up to your year. 086 - ProfitCon Sydney: What I Learned, What Shifted and What’s Coming

In this episode, I’m sharing a peek into my time at Profit Con, the annual conference for Profit First Professionals, and the in-person planning day Kristen and I added on to evolve and elevate the way we support our clients. We'll talk about: • Why stepping out of your environment gives you the clarity you didn’t know you were missing • The power of investing in planning time (even when it’s not “billable hours”) • What really happens when you make room to work on the business, not just in it • Little personal moments from the trip including a very unexpected hotel upgrade and the reminder that energy really does matter This episode is a mix of business insights, personal reflections and a reminder I think every business owner needs to hear: Clarity doesn’t come from pushing harder it comes from space. Space to zoom out, question things, reset… and come back sharper. If you’ve been feeling like you’re just getting through the week-to-week, this one is going to land in the best way. 085 - Client File: How Rachel Went from a Sinking Feeling to Back in Control of Her Salon

In this episode, I’m so excited to be sharing another Client Files with you today. These are some of my absolute favourites. Because while I can talk about strategy and systems all day long, nothing highlights how powerful this work really is then hearing from women just like you, salon owners who have walked the path, faced the stress and decided to take back control. I’m joined by the incredible Rachel, a salon owner in Victoria who has been in business for 13 years and runs a salon with a small team. Rachel opens up about what life and business looked like before we started working together, the stress of juggling bills, that sinking feeling of robbing Peter to pay Paul, and the frustration of wondering why things still felt tight after so many years in business. We talk about: • The turning point that made her reach out for help • How she realised the business model (not her effort) needed a reset • The game-changing moment of raising her prices • What life and business look like now that she has a clear plan for her profit and pay This conversation shows that often it’s not that you’re doing anything wrong… It’s that the environment has changed and your business needs to evolve with it. 084 - What My Skin Taught Me About Change (and Why So Many Salon Owners Get Stuck)

This episode feels a little different, a bit more personal but I think you’re really going to see the parallel here. This story starts with my skin (yes, really!) but it’s actually about something much deeper: how we hold ourselves back from change. On this episode we talk through; • The identity and mindset we attach to our “problems” • What it really takes to reach that turning point for change • How to move from acceptance to action in your business It’s honest, a little vulnerable and full of parallels I think you’ll really resonate with. 083 - Rapid Fire: Should I Be Spending Money to Save Tax?

This episode is a rapid-fire where we're tackling a question that comes up over and over (and one I just spoke about with a client): “Should I spend money to reduce my tax bill?” It’s one of those myths that sounds good; Spend now, save on tax later but the truth is, a tax deduction doesn’t make your expenses free. We’ll talk about: • Why “it’s tax deductible” doesn’t mean “it’s free money” • The mindset that makes business spending feel easier than personal spending • What a “write-off” actually means (and why that Schitt’s Creek moment is so relatable) • Why paying tax isn’t always the enemy, it means your business is profitable If you’ve ever caught yourself justifying a purchase because “it’s tax deductible,” let’s unpack what really happens when you spend to save tax. The goal is for you to make decisions that serve your business long-term, not just your end-of-year emotions. 082 - Why Structure Makes Running Your Salon Feel Lighter (Not Heavier)

In this episode I wanted to talk about something that comes up in conversations and with peers, my own coach in the past and with our clients: structure. More specifically the myth that structure is stressful. Because here’s the truth: when I first started my business, I avoided structure too. I thought structure would take away my freedom. But over time, I realised it’s the lack of structure that creates the most stress. We'll talk through: • Why so many salon and clinic owners resist structure (and what’s really behind it) • How “winging it” keeps you in a constant cycle of stress and scrambling • The lightness that comes from knowing things are handled • Why structure doesn’t box you in If you’ve ever found yourself saying things like “I just don’t have time for systems right now” you'll want to listen in. True freedom in business doesn’t come from chaos it comes from clarity, consistency, and structure that supports you (not controls you). Tune in now for a mindset shift that will make your salon or clinic feel lighter, calmer and far more in control. 081 - Beyond the Basics: Tailoring Profit First for Salon Owners

In this episode, we're going from beginner level profit first to intermediate. I'm talking through the common adaptations and advancements we make to profit first when working with salons and clinics. We'll talk about: • Why implementing Profit First is just the starting point, not the end game. • The difference between cashflow management and actually improving profitability. • How we use sub–opex accounts to create clarity and control as businesses scale. • When it’s time to move from “level one” Profit First to the next stage of financial maturity. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing all the “right” Profit First steps but your business still feels tight or messy behind the scenes, this episode is for you. 080 - Mindset Minute: The Most Powerful Mindset Shift I Made in My Business That is Important For You Too

This episode is one of the most powerful shifts I’ve ever made in business (and something I talk about with my salon and clinic owner clients all the time): your business is not you. We'll talk about: • How this mindset shift transforms your decisions, cash flow, profit and pay. • The difference between what you need and what the business needs. • Why thinking like a CEO (not just the do-it-all owner) brings more clarity and freedom. From paying yourself properly to separating expenses this separation sets the stage for a business that can thrive without being 100% reliant on you. Because here’s the truth: you are not your business. And once you treat it as the independent entity it is, you’ll run it better with less chaos and far more freedom. 079 - The ONE Thing You Need to Be Thinking About Before Busy Season Starts

This is one of the most important conversations of the year. The end-of-year rush is coming. Your books are filling, you’re gearing up for long days and your focus is on maximising revenue and fuller bank accounts. But while everyone’s eyes are on November and December, the smart salon owners are already planning for what happens after the rush. Because here’s the truth: the quiet period in January and February isn’t a surprise it’s predictable. And yet, every year, too many salon owners go into those months unprepared, stressed and scrambling to pay themselves or cover bills. This episode is your reminder to plan now so you’re not starting the new year behind. We’ll talk about: • Why October is the most important month for financial planning. • The predictable “busy then broke” pattern and how to break it. • What to plan for, from annual leave to tax bills so you can actually enjoy your Christmas break. • The difference between starting January in panic mode vs. starting strong and in control. This isn’t about doom and gloom, it’s about strategy. With a few smart moves now, you can make sure the holiday season sets you up for success instead of setting you back. 078 - Rapid Fire: My Bookkeeper is Saying They Don't Like Me Using Profit First

Here’s the situation: you decide to implement Profit First, you’re excited about finally getting clarity with your money and then your bookkeeper turns around and says, “It’s too complicated. Too many accounts. Too much work.” Over the past year, I’ve had a number of clients tell me this story. It can be so frustrating because here you are trying to take control of your cash flow and suddenly the professional you’re paying to support you is pushing back. In this episode, we’ll talk about: • Why bookkeepers dislike Profit First (hint: they’re not trained in it and all they see is “more work”). • The truth about how much extra effort Profit First actually creates (spoiler: it’s literally a few clicks a week). • Why bookkeepers see money differently to business owners and why their perspective isn’t always what you need. • How separating money into multiple accounts reduces complexity for you as the salon owner (even if your bookkeeper thinks it adds complexity for them). • The key difference between Profit First as a cash management system and traditional bookkeeping as an accounting system and why both matter. At the end of the day, Profit First is designed to make your money work for you, not for your bookkeeper. If you’ve ever felt stuck between wanting to do things differently and feeling like you’re being “a pain” to your bookkeeper, this episode is going to be a huge relief. Hit play and let’s break this down honestly, so you can move forward with confidence (and maybe even help your bookkeeper understand why this system matters so much for your business). 077 - Introducing Kristen: Your Client Success Consultant

In this episode, I’m introducing you to someone very special: my colleague (and now team member) Kristen. If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, you probably know my voice, my style, and the way I work with salon owners to create more profit and financial freedom. But what you might not know is that when you work with me, you’re also getting support from Kristen and I want you to know her just as well. Kristen brings over 25 years of experience in bookkeeping, finance and small business consulting. Numbers are her jam, but what makes her so unique is how she translates those numbers into plain language and practical steps that actually make sense. Inside this conversation, we talk about: • Kristen’s background and how her early days in her dad’s trade business shaped her understanding of small business. • Why her mix of bookkeeping expertise and people skills makes her such a valuable part of the support we offer clients. • How our paths first crossed years ago, and what brought her into the team today. • The behind-the-scenes support Kristen gives our clients to keep them accountable, confident and in control of their money. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like working with us or if you’ve thought, “Would I get the support I really need?” this episode will give you a peek behind the curtain. You’ll not only hear Kristen’s story, but also get a feel for how we work together to make sure our clients are never left figuring it out on their own. 076 - One Year of Prosper and Profit 2.0: What’s Changed and What’s Working

I can hardly believe it’s been a full year since I introduced Prosper and Profit 2.0. At the time, I recorded an episode explaining what the new structure of the program would look like, why I was making changes, and how I thought it would benefit salon and clinic owners. But back then, it was all still theory, an outline of how I planned things to work. Fast forward 12 months, and we’ve now taken dozens of clients through this new way of working. It’s no longer just a plan, it’s a proven system. And the results for both clients and myself have been incredible. In this episode, I'll share: • Why I moved away from the “every two weeks, fixed coaching calls” model. • How creating assignments and processes for key areas (like service menus, expenses, commissions, and more) has completely changed the way clients make progress. • The difference between the 4-month version (ideal for solo operators or salons with very simple setups) and the 6-month version (perfect for owners with bigger teams and more complexity). • How milestone sessions, unlimited Basecamp support, and ad-hoc calls give clients the flexibility they need to move at the natural pace of their business. • Why this system not only supports clients better but has also allowed me to bring in more team support and increase the impact we can make. If you listened to the original Prosper and Profit 2.0 episode, this one is a full-circle update because now I’m not talking about how it’s supposed to work. I’m talking about how it actually works in practice, the shifts it’s created, and why I truly believe this structure is setting salon and clinic owners up for lasting success. Whether you’re a client already or you’re curious about how working together might look, this episode gives you the clearest picture yet of what Prosper and Profit 2.0 really means. 075 - The Hidden Cost of Discounting in Your Salon

Discounts can feel like a quick fix. You get that “sugar hit” of cash flow when you need it and on the surface it feels like it’s working. But behind the scenes? Discounting can silently drain your profitability and keep you stuck on a hamster wheel of short-term wins instead of long-term growth. I’ll walk you through: • Why discounts feel good in the moment (but don’t serve you long-term) • How to think differently about filling your books without slashing your prices • A personal example that highlights just how damaging discounts can be for your bottom line This is a big mindset shift and one that could make a huge difference to the money you actually get to keep from your salon. 071 - How to Spot (and Strengthen) Your Most Profitable Services

It’s been a while since I’ve given you a little behind-the-scenes update, so before we dive in, a little bit of what's been happening and what's coming up. Okay… onto today’s topic. We’re talking about something I see in so many salons and clinics I work with: Top-selling services that aren’t actually making a profit. It’s one of those sneaky business traps, your books look busy, your revenue is up, but your bank account… not so much. In this episode, I’m sharing: • The signs a service might be costing you more than it makes • Why high demand doesn’t always mean high profit • How to calculate the true cost of delivering a service (beyond just products + wages) • What makes a service genuinely profitable and how to strengthen those in your menu If you’ve ever thought, “We’re so busy… but where’s the money?”, this one’s for you. Let’s make sure all your hard work (and your team’s) is actually paying YOU at the end of the month. 070 - Why Hiring Too Soon isn't Growing Your Salon

You’ve probably heard it before: “If you want to grow your salon, just hire more team members.” But what if that advice is actually making things harder? In this episode, I’m diving into a conversation I’ve been having with a lot of salon owners lately. We're exposing the truth about hiring too soon. It might feel like you’re doing the right thing by bringing someone on, but if the demand isn’t there, you’re not solving the problem you think you are. We’ll talk about: • Why hiring isn’t always the answer to growth • The real reasons salon owners hire too early (and how it backfires) • The difference between demand-led hiring vs. fear-based hiring • How to avoid the trap of thinking more team = more profit If you’ve ever felt stressed about team wages, bookings, or wondering if you made the right hiring call then this one’s for you. 069 - You Don’t Have to Prove It: Salon Profits vs Externally Performing

Ever catch yourself trying to look like a successful salon owner instead of actually feeling like one? In this episode, I’m diving into a quiet pressure a lot of high-achieving salon owners face: the need to prove yourself. Whether it’s to your family, your peers or even strangers on Instagram, this pressure can sneakily shape your decisions. And often in ways that do not serve your profit or peace. We’ll talk about: • The subtle ways “proving yourself” shows up in your business • Why it can feel heavy, expensive and unsustainable • How to focus on building a business that actually supports your life (not just looks good on the ‘gram) This one’s a mindset conversation but it has a real impact on your numbers, your time, your money and your energy. Let’s talk about building a salon that works for you, not one that just looks the part. Looking for help to transform your business into the thriving, profitable business you know it could be?
