Speaking on Business: Zanskar
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Utah-based Zanskar is helping uncover geothermal energy by using advanced technology to find heat beneath the earth’s surface. By turning that heat into reliable power, they’re expanding access to clean energy and supporting a more sustainable future. Communications and Brand Strategist, Riley Whitney, joins us with more. Riley Whitney: Salt Lake City is home to America’s leading geothermal discovery company. Zanskar is transforming how we find, assess and deliver geothermal energy across the Western U.S. For decades, geothermal development has been out of reach. Discovery was limited to places with obvious surface signals, causing much of America’s geothermal potential to remain hidden deep underground. Zanskar is changing that. By combining AI technology with modern geoscience and drilling techniques, Zanskar has made more discoveries in the past year than the industry has seen in decades – unlocking a reliable, 24/7 energy resource at a time when domestic power is needed more than ever before. Zanskar is spearheading one of the largest ever expansions of geothermal discovery in American history, showing the world that naturally occurring geothermal is the opposite of tapped out…as long as you know where to look. Visit Zanskar.com to learn more. Derek Miller: By uncovering energy resources once thought impossible to reach, Zanskar is opening new opportunities for communities across the West. Their groundbreaking work is helping build a stronger, more resilient energy future for generations to come. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Speaking on Business: The Blocks
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. The Blocks celebrates Salt Lake City's creative spirit by transforming underutilized spaces into vibrant destinations. This summer, that includes a new community gathering space on Main Street. Director of The Blocks, Lucas Horns, shares what's happening downtown this season. Lucas Horns: This summer, a once-empty corner of Main Street comes alive with the Art Garten, a free outdoor pop-up at 150 South Main every Thursday and Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., now until September. Enjoy local artists, live music and a creative space unlike any other downtown. Art Garten is just the beginning. Just steps away, experience Sonder S-L-C, Kelli Freshman's immersive photography exhibit on the Vasilios Priskos Walkway. Every Saturday, the Downtown Farmers Market fills Pioneer Park with fresh produce, local makers and morning energy, while the Twilight Concert Series brings major acts to the Gallivan Center. At the Eccles Theater, Alicia Keys' Tony-winning musical Hell's Kitchen takes the stage. Add in more than 200 bars and restaurants, and there's something for everyone downtown. This is the season downtown shines brightest. Just wander downtown to discover your fun. Speaking on Business: Obra
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Two years ago, Utah-based Obra set out to rethink the hiring process, helping jobs and qualified candidates find each other more easily through a simpler, more efficient recruiting platform. COO, Heather Erickson, joins us with more. Heather Erickson: The hiring industry is broken. AI has flooded inboxes of hiring teams with fake applications - making hiring difficult for both hiring teams and job seekers. As AI floods traditional job boards with unqualified applicants, it is driving hiring managers to go search for candidates directly. In fact, 83 percent of recruiters have turned to outbound sourcing. At the same time, many existing recruiting platforms are expensive and limit how hiring managers can connect with candidates. This creates additional challenges for job seekers to get discovered. That’s where Obra comes in. Obra is a self-serve recruiting platform designed to make it easier and more affordable to connect with qualified candidates. We provide a fast search and matching capabilities to over 800 million candidate profiles — complete with resumes and accurate contact information. With a free tier, Obra provides a meaningful low-barrier sourcing option for any size team — so the job easily finds the job seeker. Derek Miller: By helping strengthen Utah’s workforce and making it easier for businesses to hire, Obra is supporting economic growth and new career opportunities across the state. Speaking on Business: Utah Microloan Fund
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Since 1991, the Utah Microloan Fund has helped small business owners across Utah turn their dreams into reality. Through financing and support for entrepreneurs and underserved communities, they are changing lives and strengthening Utah’s economy. Finance Manager, Giovanni Orifici, joins us with more. Giovanni Orifici: When you think about small business, you might picture a local café, a neighborhood contractor or a first-time entrepreneur with a big idea. But what many people don’t see is how those dreams get funded. That’s where nonprofit microlenders and Community Development Financial Institutions, or CDFIs, come in. These organizations step in where traditional banks often refuse. They provide access to affordable capital for people who may not have perfect credit, operating histories or equity. But they don’t stop at loans — they offer direct guidance, education and support to help businesses succeed. CDFIs don’t just invest in businesses — they invest in people, neighborhoods and long-term economic growth. Every dollar lent can create jobs, stabilize local economies and strengthen communities. So when you support nonprofit microlenders, you’re not just backing a lender — you’re helping build opportunity where it’s needed most. Speaking on Business: National Forest Foundation
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. The National Forest Foundation, or NFF, partners with the U.S. Forest Service working across 193 million acres to reduce wildfire risk, restore watersheds and expand outdoor access. Utah Program Coordinator, Matthew Podolinsky, joins us with more. Matthew Podolinsky: Utah is home to more than 8 million acres of National Forest land — public lands that help define the state. In partnership with the Forest Service, the NFF is leading a variety of projects on these landscapes. Utah’s outdoor recreation economy is a 10 billion dollar powerhouse supporting over 75,000 jobs. That economic development depends on well-maintained, accessible public lands. Alongside our partners, the NFF is modernizing aging infrastructure by restoring campgrounds and trails to improve access and elevate the outdoor experience across the state. But in Utah, this work goes beyond recreation. It’s also about water. From restoring streams and floodplains to revitalizing wetlands, these efforts help secure reliable water sources for communities while supporting wildlife and biodiversity. The NFF’s work turns a shared love of the outdoors into meaningful action, ensuring Utah’s national forests remain healthy, resilient and accessible for generations to come. Speaking on Business: Primary Children's Hospital
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Since its founding in 1922, Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital has provided world-class specialty care for children, supporting kids and families across the country and making a lasting impact. Hospital President, Dustin Lipson, joins us with more. Dustin Lipson: When we talk about the future of health of our community, we often think about hospitals or medical innovation. But one of the most powerful places to invest in health begins much earlier — during early childhood. Those first years build the foundation for a lifetime. Children grow quickly — and the environments they grow up in can help them flourish or make life much harder. Many children face Adverse Childhood Experiences, like chronic stress, instability or feeling unsafe. These don’t just affect behavior — they can impact brain development, the immune system and long-term health, increasing the risk of conditions like asthma, depression, heart disease and even dementia. But there’s real hope. Positive Childhood Experiences help build resilience. When a child has a caring adult, feels safe and has places to learn and play, they’re better able to manage stress and grow in healthy ways. Together, we can help every child reach their full potential. Derek Miller: By providing expert pediatric care and support, Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital is improving children’s lives. Their work brings comfort and strengthens communities, creating impact that reaches far beyond the hospital. Get involved, volunteer or donate at Primary Children's Hospital dot org. Speaking on Business: Utah Water Ways
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. In 2023, Utah lawmakers created Utah Water Ways to unite conservation efforts and promote smarter water use through the Slow the Flow campaign, helping protect Utah’s water for the future. Director of Community Engagement, Cynthia Bee, joins us with more. Cynthia Bee: Water fuels Utah’s economy, communities and quality of life — and the future of this vital resource depends on what we do today. Government, businesses and nonprofits are stepping up, but the real power lies in aligning our efforts and speaking with one strong, unified voice for water conservation. In the coming decade, Utah must transform hundreds of millions of square feet of nonfunctional lawn to waterwise alternatives, and businesses are essential to making that change happen. Most commercial landscapes offer no recreational benefit, yet they consume enormous amounts of water. By partnering with the Slow the Flow campaign, companies can lead by example, showcase impactful results and inspire others to follow. We equip corporate green teams and employees with education, tools and mentoring to turn ideas into action. Businesses can also invest directly in the nonprofit Utah Water Ways, helping fund conservation projects in the communities they serve. Speaking on Business: Utah Valley University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Utah Valley University’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute serves as a living lab for AI, supporting AI literacy, developing workforce-aligned curricula and acting as a central resource for AI initiatives across campus and Utah’s higher education system. Senior Director of the Applied AI Institute, Tyler Small, joins us with more. Tyler Small: So we know that AI can be incredibly disruptive in business, education and in work in general. So, at UVU, we created an AI transformation strategy with specific measurements that will enable each faculty member, and each student and staff to transform themselves, and integrate AI into their learning and work. And a big part of this is that we’re building ways for faculty to be able to use AI to provide even more work experiences for their students. And it’s not always possible to find an industry partner and manage a working relationship for students in their class projects. But while AI is making those industry connections easier, it’s also providing ways to build simulations of relevant work scenarios — in seconds instead of hours. And so, in either case the students get to practice their skills on real-work problems. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah helps guide Utah’s growth with data and insights that help businesses, leaders and communities across the state make more informed decisions. Communications Director, Nick Thiriot, joins us with more. Nick Thiriot: For over 10 years, the University of Utah’s Kem C. We shed light on the most important issues impacting our state’s future prosperity. Since 1978, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah has connected caring adult mentors with young people who need extra support, building one-to-one relationships that help kids grow in confidence, succeed in school and create brighter futures. President and CEO, Jill Sundstrom, joins us with more. Speaking on Business: Aspen Peak Productions
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Aspen Peak Productions brings events to life, handling everything from audio and lighting to staging and design. They work on corporate, social and nonprofit events, making sure every detail comes together for a seamless, high-quality experience. Co-Owner, Rachel Sorrels-Jones, joins us with more. Rachel Sorrels-Jones: We’ve all been there before: a corporate summit with harsh lights, bad audio and a distracted audience. As an event host, your biggest fear is being forgettable. Today the ‘standard’ event is dead, and the Experience is here to stay. For years, AV was seen as a utility — like electricity. You plugged it in, and it worked. But now, your audience is different. Whether you’re a corporate planner or a non-profit director, you aren’t just competing with other events; you’re competing with the device in their hand. This is where Production Design comes in, to be an architect of atmosphere. When we integrate immersive visuals, we aren’t just showing a slide deck — we’re building a world around your message. When you invest in intentional design, your ROI shows up in employee engagement, donor connection and brand loyalty. Let us help you focus on your guests, knowing the environment is working for you, not against you. Speaking on Business: Elevated Group
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. The Elevated Group helps businesses stay connected and efficient by providing and managing copiers, printers and phone systems. Helping businesses stay up to date and keep daily operations running smoothly. CEO, Graham McMullen, joins us with more. Graham McMullen: The Elevated Group was founded with a simple focus: combining quality office technology with outstanding customer service. After years of working in the copier and telecom industry in the UK, including supporting major clients like the London Stock Exchange, Buckingham Palace and professional soccer clubs, I saw firsthand how much strong service matters. In highly competitive markets, customer service is what sets businesses apart — it helps you win customers, keep them and keep their operations running smoothly. When my wife, who is from Holladay, and I moved to Utah seven years ago, starting Elevated Group felt like a natural next step. We launched the company three years ago with that same commitment to responsiveness, reliability and care. Today, we’re proud to work with businesses across Utah, providing high-quality equipment and fast, dependable support that helps them stay productive and successful every day. Speaking on Business: Minky Couture
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Minky Couture has grown from a heartfelt mission into a beloved brand known for comfort and luxury with eight retail locations and a thriving online store. At its core, the company is all about comfort and community. Owner and Founder, Sandi Hendry, joins us with more. Sandi Hendry: Minky Couture began with a desire to bring comfort to those in need. In 2009, when my daughter became ill and was hospitalized, I longed for a way to bring her comfort in her recovery. Unable to find the perfect blanket to bring her solace, I created one myself – giving rise to Minky Couture, best blanket ever. After 30 years as a teacher, I knew that I wanted Minky Couture to positively impact as many lives as possible. We employ local mothers as seamstresses, allowing them to work from home providing for their families and strengthening our community. Our “Heart of Minky” program is another way we give back, donating thousands of Mini Minky blankets each month to NICUs across the country. These blankets bring warmth and comfort to premature babies and to their families during very difficult times. At Minky Couture, every blanket is made with the highest quality fabric, ensuring both softness and luxury for years to come. Derek Miller: Minky Couture is dedicated to making a difference, one blanket at a time, blending warmth, comfort and community impact. Learn more at their website, MinkyCouture.com. Speaking on Business: Utah Film Commission
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Founded in 1974, the Utah Film Commission promotes the entire state as a destination for film, television and commercial production while supporting the growth of local talent, crews and the broader industry. Director of the Utah Film Commission, Virginia Pearce, joins us with more. Virginia Pearce: At the Utah Film Commission, we promote the state as a premiere destination for production and support our local film industry with incentives and resources. For over a century, Utah has served as the backdrop for iconic films, TV shows and commercials, and the film industry continues to thrive today. We had a milestone year in 2025 with film production generating over 136 million dollars in state, translating into more than 2,600 direct jobs for Utahns and millions spent in local businesses around the state. 39 percent of travelers say films or TV shows influenced their visit to Utah, generating about 600 million dollars annually. That's why we launched the Utah Film Trail where film lovers can discover the real-world locations featured in some of their favorite movies and TV shows. We focus on building a strong creative economy in Utah that inspires the next generation of artists and audiences. Derek Miller: By bringing productions to Utah, the Film Commission boosts the economy and tourism while supporting and training local talent to grow a skilled, vibrant creative workforce.
