To kick off the month of June, we are having Gemma Herbertson calling in from the U.K. That is right, the U.K.! Gemma is the founder of Neuro Frontiers. The seeds of this initiative started in early 2014 when searching for answers for her then four year-old son, who was recovering from some hefty brain surgery which had left him with a mental age of just a few months. Years of research into what could improve his quality of life brought the revelation that if the brain could be fuelled and stimulated specifically for an individual, there was a much greater chance of that person’s brain being able to function to its optimum; and this had huge ramifications for my son – it gave Gemma hope that he could do more, and that his quality of life could be improved. There was no time to waste – and immediately set out on an amazing journey into the world of Neuroplasticity Therapies – a journey that would change my son’s life, change the quality of our family life, and change my life and career as well. To wrap up our October series, we are having Amy Jayne Needham a Forensic Psychologist student calling in from the UK! Amy is very passionate about brain injury, and it is the focus of my Doctoral research. Prior to starting her training, she worked within high-secure prisons in the UK running a Brain Injury Pathway. My role was to set up, screen and support prisoners who screened positive for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) under the supervision of a Consultant Clinical-Neuropsychologist. This is where her passion and interest in brain injury, in particular TBI grew. "Research has highlighted the consequences of TBI such as difficulties with regulating emotions, disinhibited behaviour, increased aggression, changes in empathy, drug use, social and occupational difficulties, offending behaviour and re-offending. However, there is very little regarding resources available about TBI within prisons and the criminal justice system, either to support the individuals, or to educate and train staff how to work with people who have sustained TBIs. I decided to dedicate my research to exploring TBI within the context of offending behaviour. My research has focused on exploring TBI looking at mental health, cognitive functioning and ADHD, how TBI is associated with offending behaviour, and how personality traits can impact any potential associations between TBI and offending. Furthermore, I have also completed a systematic review examining the internalising and externalising behaviours that occur following TBI in adults. I am working to update and publish this review upon completing my course. At the time of writing, I have submitted my research and have an examination date to defend my research in a viva voca. My hope is that I will be qualified within the new year."

Which is a Finnish technology company that developed the ACT Head Impact Tracker. Which is to help prevent brain injuries in sports! The ACT Head Impact Tracker is a simple, easy-to-use, and versatile head impact measuring device for athletes, coaches, trainers, teams, clubs, federations, and other sports bodies, as well as friends and families of athletes. It is designed to provide information. Information that is crucial to understanding what is happening, to whom, when, and where. Combining the data from the ACT Head Impact Tracker with other data (like video, visual tracking, etc.) opens a whole new world of information: what events preceded and led to the impacts, why and where exactly they happened, to mention a few. With the data, users can study the dynamics of potential hazards, and they may be able to cut down on the number of head impacts, increase the time between them, and maybe even lower their magnitude. The data can also be used to identify risk players and positions, and to assess and modify protocols, practices, training programs, and drills, for example. With the ACT Head Impact Tracker, it is possible to track the compliance with programs, rules, restrictions, and alterations, and measure the results and effectiveness of the actions taken.
