184: DIGESTIVE DISEQUILIBRIUM -- Sensitivities as a Reflection of Disharmony Between the Food and the System Itself

Why isn't everyone allergic to the same things? Why doesn't everyone have the same sense of humour? Why does the same chemical compound cause different downstream physiological effects? All these situations above are related to the concept of 'receptor dependence'. The same stimulus can cause different reactions in different 'receptors', be they transmembrane proteins in the stomach or 'triggers' for sensitive persons with differing levels of 'tolerance' for 'bad jokes'. In naturopathic medicine, we often put greater emphasis on the FOOD while putting less skilful or comprehensive emphasis on the condition of the RECEIVER (cells, receptors, tissues -- the 'tolerance' of the person in terms of the digestive system or neuro-immune reactivity etc.). This is partly because very few people (clinicians) can skilfully assess the abdominal structures and therefore, we don't have a well-known and reliable way to assess the MACRO structures of the abdomen, although we have some fairly well-known concepts (i.e. leaky gut) that inform us of the MICRO structures of the gut.The impact of this disproportional 'blame' on the food rather than the system leads to an emphasis on restrictive and often unsustainable diet plans.Sometimes the food is more of the problem (e.g. gluten in celiac disease); sometimes the system is more to blame (e.g. leaky gut or sphincter of Oddi dysfunction) ... but it is always the interaction of the two that is the problem. The information presented on this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or prescribe for any medical or psychological condition, nor prevent, treat, mitigate, or cure any conditions. Have you ever wondered why some people just keep getting recurring infections that they just can’t seem to get ahead of? Perhaps the recurring yeast, fungal or microbial issues aren’t the real problem. What if their existence was actually in some way protecting you from a deeper burden that isn’t being fully resolved so it keeps the microbes consistently at higher levels? In this week’s episode Dr. Michelle, ND discusses what to look deeper for with recurring infections, to better direct your treatment focus in the right direction. The information presented on this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or prescribe for any medical or psychological condition, nor prevent, treat, mitigate, or cure any conditions. From the integrative clinician's perspective, it sounds very 'science-y', has some clear-cut borders, guidelines etc. for assessment and testing and outcomes, and it sounds (maybe a little overly) simple and clear in these respects. Halitosis, or bad breath, can originate from various sources, primarily driven by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral bacteria during the putrefaction of food particles. Mouth breathing exacerbates this issue by reducing saliva flow, allowing bacteria to thrive. While oral causes include poor oral hygiene and gum disease, extraoral factors like diet, systemic diseases, and respiratory conditions contribute to the multifaceted origins of halitosis. The information presented on this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or prescribe for any medical or psychological condition, nor prevent, treat, mitigate, or cure any conditions. Post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that can develop in some individuals after recovering from a gastrointestinal infection, such as food poisoning or a bacterial or viral infection. The importance of the patient's pre-existing health or terrain lies in the fact that individuals with a compromised or already sensitive gastrointestinal system may be more susceptible to developing post-infectious IBS. This condition is characterized by persistent digestive symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating and underscores the need for comprehensive care and monitoring of the patient's digestive health both before and after an infection to prevent and manage such issues effectively.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/that-naturopathic-podcast--4229492/support.

157: DRAIN TO GAIN -- The Importance of Drainage Pathways for Correcting Health

Join Dr. Michelle ND as she discusses the importance of biotherapeutic drainage, a naturopathic approach that aims to support the body's natural detoxification pathways. It involves the use of homeopathic remedies and botanical extracts to stimulate the excretion of toxins through the liver, kidneys, and other elimination channels. By promoting the proper functioning of these organs and systems, biotherapeutic drainage can enhance the body's ability to remove metabolic waste and environmental toxins, which must be eliminated in order to function optimally.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/that-naturopathic-podcast--4229492/support.

156: The Blood Brain Connection -- A Role for Glutathione in RBC Fragility and Neuroinflammation?

There is an axiom in Traditional Chinese Medicine that goes a little something like this: ‘Blood is the mother of Qi, and Qi is the commander of Blood’. They are interdependent, each needing the other to support life on a cellular level. Without blood, the nerve will die, and the blood requires the directing and integrating (yang) influence of the nerves to get to and from where it needs to nourish (yin).Glutathione is thus critical for the biochemical function of the Mother and the Commander, and signs of RBC fragility and neuropathy may be good indications that you may benefit from a highly absorbable glutathione supplement, especially if you suffer from any chronic disease associated with oxidative stress. 152: A Homeopathic for the TIRED and WIRED

Are you ‘tired and wired’, totally exhausted and running on adrenaline? This very brief episode (about 6 mins) talks about the use of a homeopathic remedy, Argentum nitricum, and is not intended for anyone with fundamentalist beliefs about homeopathy. It is simply the shared experience of one clinician who finds it very helpful for those who are WIRED. You still have to address the TIRED, but you won’t be able to do that if you don’t address the WIRED, too. TIRED + WIRED + ARGENTUM NITRICUM = TIRED.This is a net positive result which will allow you to build up the yin energy a little easier. 151: YOU BET YOUR ACID -- A Basic Understanding of Stomach Acid

If you could use only one word to help describe the essence of the stomach, a shortlist would have to include ‘ACID’. And, if the function of the stomach is largely dependent upon the optimum acidity of its contents, and many of you reading this have INSUFFICIENT STOMACH ACID, then why are acid-decreasing medications like proton pump inhibitors some of the most commonly prescribed medications? This episode is focused on stomach acid basics and the Betaine HCl test. 150: Melatonin and Sleep – Less is More ... Unless you Need More?

Sleep is the sweet, sweet, rejuvenative nectar that can make every single chronic disease better. It’s as easy as that. A good night's sleep is healing ... which is probably why we all are excited at the prospect of any supplement helping or improving sleep quantity or quality. But is melatonin the cure-all for your sleeping woes? Could it all be so simple?Despite they hype, melatonin doesn’t seem to change sleep architecture greatly, but details matter. The dose, the pharmacokinetics of absorption of different supplements, and the individualization of the prescription may lead us to some conclusion between over-hyped placebo and panacea.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/that-naturopathic-podcast--4229492/support.
