Long Term Athlete Development: High Performance + Parenting with Gordo Byrn
I’m honored to welcome Gordo Byrn back to the podcast! If you haven’t already, I highly recommend listening to his episode on returning to a lifestyle of elite performance after taking a decade away, it’s one of the most popular episodes thus far. In this conversation we shift gears a little and dive deep into long-term athletic development, parenting philosophy, and sustainable high performance through the lens of Gordo Byrn’s experience as both an elite athlete and a father.Gordo’s won a world championship in the Ultraman and has returned to the top of the podium in his age group at long course triathlons in the past few years, but in this episode we talk about how his daughter has become one of the best high school swimmers in the US.The core tension explored is short-term success vs. long-term growth. Many young athletes, parents, and coaches chase early wins through high training loads (what he calls a “load max” strategy), but Gordo argues this often leads to burnout, plateaus, or stalled development later.Instead, he advocates for:Playing the long game (and by long, he’s thinking a 12–16 year horizon)Leaving room to improve each seasonLetting motivation come from the athlete—not the parentAnd what his goal as a parent are for his kids participating in sport. The episode also explores:Why early success can be misleadingHow overtraining shows up psychologically before physicallyThe importance of autonomy in kidsHow to evaluate college decisions beyond athleticsWhy most families misunderstand the odds of sports paying for collegeAt its core, this isn’t just about sport—it’s about raising capable, self-directed humans who can thrive long after competition ends.I’m excited to see what resonates with you from this episode.More about Gordo:Endurance Essentials True Wealth Live Long and ProsperGordo on the Forging Iron Podcast (round 1):AppleSpotifyQuick favor: if you enjoy this episode, share it with a friend, coach or colleague or over on your social media! Mastering Emotions Under Pressure with Dr. Braden Brown
I’m really excited to bring you this conversation with Dr. Braden Brown, LMFT, PhD. In this episode, Braden talks about his role working with elite athletes as the Director of Mental Health for BYU Athletics. We dig into many of my favorite topics in the mental performance, but some of the highlights are:The difference between high standards and perfectionismA practical framework and tools for managing thoughts and emotionsKnowing that even the best deal with doubt, nerves, and uncertaintyHow breath work and awareness help regulate performance in high-pressure momentsUnderstanding your optimal performance zoneWhy mental skills are universal, but application is sport-specificThe importance of relationships and how better communication comes from better questionsIf you’re an athlete or coach, this is packed with ways to improve your mental game, and I’d be super curious to hear what resonates with you. A Year's Worth Of Performance Experts: The Three Things I Learned
Forging Iron Podcast — Year One Reflections: The 3 Themes That Shape PerformanceIn this special anniversary episode, we're celebrating year one of the podcast! We've had some amazing guests, from:sports nutritionistmediation expertdoctors of all types:a pediatricianPhDs in sport psychologyand an orthopedic surgeonmental performance coachesand current and former collegiate and professional athletes, ranging from runners, basketball players and rock climbersincluding two world champions! These guests have shared a little science and a lot of stories in sport, helping us take key things we can apply to our own performance journey. Today, I’m going to reflect on three major themes that have surfaced from year one. Let’s dive in:Drawing from stories and science across endurance sport, this episode explores three powerful ideas that challenge common performance myths and offer a more sustainable path to growth.🔑 Key Themes1️⃣ What do we misunderstand about confidence?Confidence isn’t a prerequisite for performance. It’s often a byproduct of consistent action. Many elite athletes achieve incredible results while still questioning themselves — proving that belief isn’t required to show up and perform.2️⃣ Do sports build mental strength? If so, what are the elements required?Sport doesn’t automatically build character or resilience. Environment matters. Coaches, parents, and leaders shape psychological safety, motivation, and long-term development more than the sport itself.3️⃣ Reframing performance as playing a dynamic puzzleTraining and competition don’t exist in isolation. Life seasons shift priorities, capacity, and identity. Sustainable performance comes from aligning goals with values, curiosity, and personal growth.🧠 What You’ll LearnWhy confidence often follows behavior — not the other way aroundHow coaching environments shape mindset and performanceThe role of psychological safety in long-term successWhy playfulness improves consistency and focusHow to adapt performance goals across life seasonsA framework for aligning sport with values and identity👟 Who This Episode Is ForAthletes, coaches, parents, and high performers who want a healthier, more durable approach to performance and growth.Huge shoutout to our amazing guests and those of you who have followed along. I'd love to know what you got out of the episodes. Looking forward to year two! Happy training!

Built to Move: Rethinking Training, Aging, and Health-span with Dr. Howard Luks M.D.
I’m really excited to share this episode with Dr. Howard Luks. Dr. Luks is an orthopedic surgeon by trade, but his writing, whether it’s his book Longevity Simplified or Substack called Built to Move: Born to Heal, encompasses so much more than fixing broken bones. This episode takes special meaning for me now, as just this week I lost a grandparent. He’s undoubtedly in a better place now, but a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go help him and spent some time in a memory care facility. Between my grandpa and the other people in the memory care unit, it was striking just how much physical and cognitive capacity we lose at these end stages. Of course, that comes for us all at some point, but as Dr. Luks and I talk about today, there are ways to make those final 5 to 10 years of our life vastly more engaging and enjoyable. Through his writing and this conversation, Dr. Luks shares how to take care of our health in a way that allows us to continue doing the things we love doing for as long as we can.Find out more about Dr. Luks:Built to Move, Born to Heal - Dr. Luks' SubstackLongevity Simplified BookThis episode goes hand in hand with part of my conversation with Justin Daerr. If you haven’t listened to it, I highly suggest it, as Justin talks about a study done on collegiate athletes and how they were no more likely to exercise later in life than someone who had never exercised. I’m increasingly finding this balance between chasing performance versus moving to be healthy a fascinating topic.Clearly, training and movement can take many shapes and forms, and if you’re interested in doing a marathon, Ironman, or ultra but want to blend it with this idea of staying healthy for the long haul, I’d love to chat. One of my athletes recently completed a 100 miler, which was a big goal of his, but our main priority is helping him be healthy for life. Like Dr. Luks mentions, those finish line feelings are fleeting, and while I love them as much as the next person, I also want to make sure that my athletes are enjoying the process and doing things in a way that sets them up for health in the long haul. Jacob Hunter: Running Strong Through The Highs and Lows
My guest today is Jacob Hunter. As a high school athlete, Jacob won multiple state championships in Virginia and was on the 2x Nike Cross Country National Championship winning team for Loudoun Valley. Jacob went on to compete for the University of Virginia, notching PR’s of 4:03 in the mile and 14:05 in the 5k. All of this is extremely impressive in it’s own right, but what makes it even greater is that Jacob has been managing Type 1 Diabetes since he was 11 years old.In this episode, we reflect on the challenges he faced while navigating sport and performance in high school and college, and some key takeaways that will help any athlete, regardless of the circumstances they face. Some of my favorites:learning what how your body responds to training and nutrition and building around thatrepeating basic habitsembracing our limitations and constraints without letting them define usfinding joy in the big pressure momentsI’m excited to share this one with you, let me know what sticks out to you!Learn more and connect:Jacob’s Hammer and Axe CoachingJacob’s instagramCoach Griffin and Forging Iron Training:Coaching: https://forgingirontraining.fit/coaching-consultForging Iron Training Principles Substack: https://griffinjaworski.substack.com/More ways to connect:Instagram: https://instagram.com/coach_grifjawsTwitter: https://x.com/coach_grifjawsLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/griffin-jaworski

A meditation for coaches and athletes & why it works
Today we’re exploring the power of loving-kindness meditation.I know, I know… some people hear “loving-kindness meditation” and immediately tune out; it’s too woo-woo or mushy-gushy.For those unfamiliar, loving-kindness meditation is a lot like having “thoughts and prayers” for others and for self. It’s also called Metta, which translates to positive energy and kindness. People say things like that all the time: “I’m thinking about you” or “you guys are in our prayers” or “hope you’re doing well!”. With that in mind, a loving-kindness meditation isn’t probably too far off from ways we already think - it’s just a little more specific and aimed at helping the person practicing, not just who they’re thinking about. For coaches, athletes, or people a part of a team or group, I think this type of meditation can be extremely beneficial.I've included some research and more details on this, with a standalone guided meditation on our substack as well.Until next time, happy training!Coach GriffinMay you, the listener, be safe, well, joyful and loved.References:Seligman, M. Justin Daerr: Keys To Performance Improvement
Today’s episode is jam packed with insights into the mindset of elite performance, both from an athlete’s and coach’s perspective. My guest is Justin Daerr, a former professional triathlete and current coach and mental performance consultant. As an athlete, Justin has an extremely impressive resume, but one of the things that I love that he highlights on his website all-ofit.com is that he completed his first Ironman in 12 hours and 55 minutes, coming in 1034th place. Then, over a decade later, he won the professional field at Ironman Boulder while notching a ton of podium finishes in between.Justin has also had incredible success in coaching, with athletes winning their age group or overall amateur fields at triathlons of multiple levels. Recently, Justin has completed a Master’s degree in Sport Psychology, and this episode really highlights key ways the mental game can help shape our performances and experiences, both from the lens of an athlete and coaches. I’m excited to see what you all take away from this episode! One thing I really resonated with was the difference between being the best athlete in the field versus making the best out of your own performance. While training is partly geared towards improving our physical capacity, it should also be geared towards improving our execution. Unless you’re performing at 100% of your physical capacity 100% of the time, then great news, you can get better by simply working on your mental game and trying to raise that execution level up. If that interests you, head over to forgingirontraining.fit and let’s chat, I’d love to learn more.Connect with Justin and learn more:all-ofit.comJustin’s Goal series on SubstackAll-ofit instagramCoach Griffin and Forging Iron Training:Coaching: https://forgingirontraining.fit/coaching-consultForging Iron Training Principles Substack: https://griffinjaworski.substack.com/More ways to connect:Instagram: https://instagram.com/coach_grifjawsTwitter: https://x.com/coach_grifjawsLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/griffin-jaworski

Coaching with Purpose: Values, Connections, Leading by Example with Suzu Cornella
I’m super excited to share this episode with Suzu Cornella. Like many of us, she has multiple different dimensions and experiences, including being an elite and professional rock climber, representing Team USA on the Sport Climbing National Team in three world championships all over the world. Suzu was the first female route setter in the history of Movement Climbing and Fitness, coaches climbers and other athletes and coaches in mental training through her company, Summits of the Mind. Plus, she’s a mom of one, soon to be two!At the time of this conversation, Suzu was the manager for coaching education at the USOPC, which we cover in great depth. As we’ve talked about on the episode with Dr. Zuleger, who was also a teacher and mentor for Suzu, is this idea that coaches don’t coach sports, they coach the people doing those sports. Suzu and I talk about how many coaches know the technical side of their sport, but ironically, the it’s the “soft-skills” like building connections and self-awareness that are hardest to develop and arguably more impactful on performance. Whether you’re a parent, coach, organizational leader, or athlete, I think this episode will offer some great perspective shifts on what it means to create sustainable excellence. The Pain Cave Gets Bigger: Jonathan Levitt
Powered by Forgingirontraining.fit: explore endurance coaching and mental performance coaching I’m pumped to kick of 2026 with today’s guest, Jonathan Levitt. He’s the host of the podcast For The Long Run, a show I’ve listened to for a long time, and recently the creator of Long Run Labs, a collective working to empower other awesome running and endurance podcasts. He’s also someone who likes to play in the start-up and entrepreneurial space in running and health tech.We cover a lot of fun topics in this episode, including:actionable items on building mental toughness by expanding the pain cave and how curiosity has shaped his running and entrepreneurial goalsBut one of the things that truly resonated with me is just how much Jonathan embodies the phrase “a rising tide floats all boats” and throughout this conversation you’ll notice the multitude of ways Jonathan has helped elevate the running community.Connect with Jonathan and learn more:The New Blood EraLong Run LabsForthelong.runInstagram - @jwlevitt // @forthelrpodX - @jwlevittOne thing we talk about is curiosity, and how it can be powerful to do things without knowing the end zone looks like simply because you enjoy the process of doing them. That's a bit how I view the podcast, but as I start year two, I've put a few more carrots for myself that I'd love your help in achieving. Two ways you can support the podcast is simply by sharing episodes you enjoy or subscribing to our substack to stay up to date. Building Fortitude with Brian Sullivan
Question of the episode: What did or do you admire about your favorite coach that you’ve ever worked with? (comment with your answer here on substack!)My guest today is Brian Sullivan, a coach and consultant for Fortitude Mental Performance, who helps individuals, teams, and coaches improve their mindset, leadership, and culture. Part of what I enjoyed about this conversation was the multiple perspectives Brian has on sport. He has:played and coached basketball at the Division I level for Davidson Universityplayed basketball on the professional level in Australia and Europeand received a Master’s degree in Sport and Performance Psychology from Denver UniversityThroughout this episode, you can tell how Brian has blended these experiences and areas of expertise to help the athletes and groups he works with make the most out of their performance. Some of the topics we go into are:the importance of enjoyment in sportwhat percent of sport performance is mental?how teams and coaches can better bring their values to lifethe importance and challenge of coaches taking feedback, not just giving itand the power of focusing on the quality and types of experiences an athlete has in unique and creative waysIf you’re a coach or parent, this one will be especially impactful, but even as an athlete it can be incredibly beneficial think of coaches as performers and if and how they are helping facilitate an environment that allows you to flourish. As I’ve stepped into a Mental Performance Consulting role for a few athletes and teams myself, it was really fascinating to hear his approach and the lessons learned from all angles of the court.Connect with Brian and Fortitude:https://fortitude.coachhttps://instagram.com/fortitude.coachhttps://x.com/BrianSullivanSPCoach Griffin and Forging Iron Training:Coaching: https://forgingirontraining.fit/coaching-consultSponsor the Podcast, Newsletter, and/or Training Squad: https://forgingirontraining.fit/becomeasponsorForging Iron Training Principles Substack: https://griffinjaworski.substack.com/YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/griffinjaworskiMore ways to connect:Instagram: https://instagram.com/coach_grifjawsTwitter: https://x.com/coach_grifjawsLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/griffin-jaworski

Reed Fischer: An Elite Runner's Mindset
The best place to leave a comment for us is here on Substack!Reed Fischer is a 2:10 marathoner and professional runner for Adidas and Tinman Elite. He’s also an Eagle Scout and one of the kindest people I’ve had the privilege to run with. When I think about people who have really nailed the sustainable part of sustainable excellence, I think of Reed. As a high school athlete, he wasn’t highly recruited. It took four years of extremely patient development at Drake University to become a name recognized in the NCAA ranks…and nearly a decade later Reed is still improving and now performing on the world stage. In this episode we talk about:his experimental mindset when it comes to training plan developmenthow even “negative” results can still have a lot of positiveshis collaborative process with coach Joan Hunterand how the story we tell ourselves about how sport fits into our lives isn’t always what it seems. This was a powerful episode, and Reed shared honestly about navigating training and life when his wife Christine was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago.Reed offers an inside look at the approach of someone who is a master of their craft, getting 9th at the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials and having just recently represented the US at the Marathon World Championships in Tokyo.I’m sure you’ll get a lot out of this, and if nothing else become a Reed Fischer fan and join me in supporting him as he gets ready for the New York City Marathon next.—I loved how Reed has played with different training cycles, so often we get caught up in thinking we need to do things exactly a certain way and his consistency and improvement is a testament that there are so many ways to develop and perform well as an athlete.I also thought was incredibly powerful when he shared how running had to take a back seat while he navigated the uncertainty and challenging diagnosis Christine was dealt. In the episode, he talks about coaching me, and actually shortly after recording this, my family went through our own medical challenge with my wife and youngest son spending a combined 57 straight days in the hospital. Thankfully, everyone is currently healthy and home! Rather than putting training on the back burner, I’ve had to take it off the stove completely and am just now getting back into some super short runs and starting to re-contemplate what goals I want to set and even if and how training might fit into our lives as now a dad of 3. I’m sharing a little of that journey on substack as well.Until next time, happy training!Connect with and support Reed:https://www.instagram.com/reedfisch/https://tinmanelite.comhttps://www.hammer-and-axe.comhttps://www.strava.com/pros/22433281https://linktr.ee/reedfischCoach Griffin and Forging Iron Training:Forging Iron Training Principles Substack: https://griffinjaworski.substack.com/ - leave a comment or question for the podcast!Explore our Coaching`: https://forgingirontraining.fit/coaching-consult

Behind the Lens of High Performance with Anderson Bobo
My guest today is Anderson Bobo, the creative director for Oregon Track and Field. In this episode, Anderson shares the thoughts and insights he has from behind the lens of high performance programs and athletes that are competing for NCAA and Olympic titles. Anderson views his role as one of a story teller, which lines up really well with sport psychology: as we train and compete in races, we inevitably tell ourselves a story about our performances. Finding Your Inner Edge with Chad McGehee
What do 3rd graders, the FBI, and the university of Wisconsin athletic department have in common? They’ve all been taught mediation from my guest today, Chad McGehee.Chad is the Director of Meditation Training at the University of Wisconsin athletic department, which is a first of it’s kind position in major sports. Throughout this conversation, I think you’ll see why Chad is able to be at the forefront of this work, as he blends cutting-edge research and neuroscience with traditional meditation practices in order to help athletes, teams, law enforcement and businesses enhance their cognitive function, well-being and overall performance. When a lot of us hear the wordsmindfulness or meditation, we might think about isolation, but as Chad explains in this episode, meditation isn't just for monks alone on the mountaintops, there’s also a whole pro-social side to it, and it can improve our team cohesion and ability to connect with those around us.I’d be incredibly curious to know what resonates with you from this episode, consider leaving a review on your podcast app, sharing it on Instagram, or filling out our podcast feedback and suggestion form.Connect and learn more about Chad McGeHee and Inner Edge:https://inneredgemeditation.comUW Athletics: https://uwbadgers.com/staff-directory/chad-mcgehee/748https://www.wetravel.com/trips/meditation-retreat-for-mental-performance-in-sport-inner-edge-meditation-02415271Healthy Minds Program: https://hminnovations.org/meditation-appCoach Griffin and Forging Iron Training:Coaching: https://forgingirontraining.fit/coaching-consultAsk a question or leave a comment: https://forgingirontraining.fit/amaSponsor the Podcast, Newsletter, and/or Training Squad: https://forgingirontraining.fit/becomeasponsorForging Iron Training Principles Substack: https://griffinjaworski.substack.com/YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/griffinjaworskiMore ways to connect:Instagram: https://instagram.com/coach_grifjawsTwitter: https://x.com/coach_grifjaws

Creating (Needed) Changes in Coaching Culture with Dr. Sara Erdner
What do you wish you could tell your coach, but for whatever reason never did? That is the fundamental question Dr. Sara Erdner and I explore, as well as the theme for her book: Dear Coach, What I Wish I Could Have Told You. If there’s one thing that’s clear about sport (especially at the collegiate and youth levels) it’s that coaches don’t just impact an athletes current physical skills, they also have a massive influence on their long term psychological well being, confidence, and motivation. In this epsiode, we talk about things like:is there a downside to our emphasis on being “coachable”?the irony of coaches wanting athletes to take feedback, but not being open to it themselveswhy teams and organizations aren’t families and why they should stop saying they arewhy we ultimately need to focus on coach mental health and mental strength if we want to instill the same in athletesand even some questions a high schooler or parent might ask on a recruiting visit to really get a sense of how the culture and relationship the coach is fosteringIf you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to listen to my conversation with Dr. Brian Zuleger on building mental strength from the inside out. As Dr. Erdner and I discuss, many coaches are outside in, meaning that when the team is performing great, the coach’s well-being, confidence, and motivation are high….but once the team performance starts to drop….then the coach’s well-being, confidence, and motivation, quickly follow.Dr. Erder is a Certified Mental Performance Coach with a PhD in Sport Psychology and Motor Behavior. She’s worked with all levels of athletes, including being the mental performance coach for a major professional sports organization, and is currently one of my professors at Adams State University. Dr. Erdner has an incredible amount of knowledge and experience, but rather than just telling coaches what they should do better, she hopes that this conversation and her book are invitations for coaches, athletes, administrations and organizations to launch more conversations around creating needed and lasting changes so that we can create the kind of positive experiences for coaches and athletes alike that sport can and should be all about.Find more about Dr. Erdner and her book at: https://www.dearcoachbook.com Psychology of Sport Injury & Rehabilitation podcastNutcracker Syndrome podcastSuggested reading: research on playfulness and performance:Performance and physical activity. The Mental Side of Physical Therapy with Max Stoneking, PT, DPT
Max Stoneking is an accomplished triathlete, former collegiate swimmer, as well as a triathlon coach and physical therapist (DPT).This episode is all about navigating the physical and mental challenges of sport and how to integrate it into your schedule alongside the demands and stresses of our work and social calendar. We talk about relative energy deficiency syndrome and the red flags to look out for in your own training. I really appreciated Max’s honesty in handling RED-S, which is something I also talked a bit out on my episode with Ellen Davis, who's a a sports nutritionist as well as Brady Holmer, who just rocked a 2:26 marathon in Boston, so feel free to circle back to those if you’re fascinated by that. One thing I loved about this conversation was Max’s approach as a physical therapist and coach and how he intentionally works to create an environment that people enjoy showing up to, and helping people think about the why or purpose behind their rehab and training. If you're interested in creating a life of intention, helping others, and building the self-awareness necessary to thrive in the long run, this episode has something for you, let’s dive in.This episode is brought to you by Forging Iron Training Principles, something infused in this conversation is training at the edge of our capacity, and essentially the repercussions that occur either from an injury, fatigue, hormonal, or mindset standpoint when we go too far. If you find that fascinating, I’d encourage you to check out our post on the Law of Diminishing Training Returns, where we talk about how, when it comes to long term improvement, sometimes less is more and what are some of those warning signs or things to avoid when we’re almost too motivated to push beyond our current limits.I’d love to know what your takeaways from this episode are! Gordo Byrn: Creating a Sustainable, High Performance Lifestyle
Gordo Byrn is the former Ultraman World Champion, which is a 3 day stage race covering 320 miles with a 6.2 mile swim followed by a 90 mile bike ride on day one, a 171 mile ride on day 2, and after all that, just your standard, run of the mill double marathon, 52.4 miles of running on the islands of Hawaii. At the time of this recording, Gordo was dealing with an injury, but a few months later he’s winning the 55-59 age group at Ironman 70.3 oceanside, with a blazing time of 4:38 and a sub 1:30 run split, averaging 6:48 per mile and winning the age group by 10 minutes. This is all the more impressive not just from navigating injury, but by the fact that Gordo is coming back from taking 10 years off from racing, with virtually no running or swimming in a decade. We talk about that return to sport, not only how he handled from the physical training, but the mental side as well, how his approach was to actually work easier instead of harder, and how being able to keep up with his kids and create incredible experiences with them inspired his return.I love Gordo’s perspective not just on training philosophy, but his approach to creating his ideal lifestyle, aligning the type of person he wants to be with the problems and projects he finds fascinating, and allowing those to help steer his goals.Gordo is an inspiration to so many athletes, coaches, and parents. Jackson Heidesch on Breaking 4:00 & Breaking Bones: Navigating the Highs and Lows of Running
In this episode, Jackson Heidesch joins us to talk about the highs and lows of running and the mental skills, or toolbox as he calls it, he's working on to help navigate that journey. Jackson was the 20th high schooler to break 4 minutes in the mile, running a 3:59.08. He also ran 8:42 in the 2 mile indoors his senior year, which at the time was #4 on the all time indoor list, and was 5th at nike cross country nationals. He currently runs for Duke University.Unfortunately, 4 minutes isn’t the only thing Jackson has broken, having dealt with multiple stress fractures in his first few years of college. Thankfully, Jackson gives us a behind the scenes how he’s handling these setbacks from both a physical and mental standpoint, and some of the tools he’s developed from working with sports psychologists. This conversation mirrors a lot of what Dr. Zuleger shared in our previous episode about building our mental strength from the inside out.I think you’ll really appreciate Jackson’s honesty and openness in this conversation as well as the practical ways he’s doing that internal work. Whether your a runner, triathlete, parent or coach, this episode has something for you.-------More ways to connect with Coach Griffin:Let's connect on a free coaching consultation to see how if we're a good fit to help you in your endruance endeavors: https://forgingirontraining.fit/coaching-consultHave a specific or random question about training, racing, coaching, or leadership? Leadership Is Learnable & Creating Better Coaches with Dr. Brian Zuleger: Part 2
This is a continuation of my conversation from Part 1 with Dr. Zuleger, but we focus more on the coaching aspect of things. The thing is, most coaches aren't taught leadership skills, they're simply picked because they were a good athlete or have been around the sport for a long time. But experience doesn't necessarily mean you know how to lead and create positive team cultures...We talk about developing coaches as leaders, how they can better utilize captains, and see their own actions and behaviors as a performance. If you're a coach or business executive or manager, this has a ton of great insight for you, but even if you're just an athlete or parent, it can be helpful to know that your coach is learning as well, they're a work in progress and they're a person. While some athletes still struggle with negative coaching (even at some of the highest levels), most coaches I know truly do want the best for their athletes, but we don't always have the right tools to help athletes with their mental training, which is where Dr. Zuleger comes into play! ---Dr. Zuleger is a CMPC, P.H.D. in Sport Psychology, and the Coordinator of the Applied Sport Psychology master's program that I'm in at Adams State University.Connect more with Dr. Zuleger here:http://drzuleger.comhttps://www.instagram.com/areteperformance/https://www.facebook.com/AretePerform/This podcast is brought to you by Forging Iron Training Squad:Connect with us or learn more:Website: https://forgingirontraining.fitInstagram: https://instagram.com/coach_grifjawsX/Twitter: https://x.com/coach_grifjawsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/griffin-jaworski/YouTube: https://youtube.com/griffinjaworskiArticles: https://griffinjaworski.substack.com/Training for endurance sports is hard! How to Actually Build Mental Strength with Dr. Brian Zuleger: Part 1
Dr. Zuleger is a Certified Mental Performance Coach, P.H.D. in Sport Psychology, and the Coordinator of the Applied Sport Psychology master's program that I'm in at Adams State University.Dr. Zuleger has worked with a wide range of athletes and teams, including NCAA champions and olympians but he's also passionate about educating coaches, both in how to they can help their athletes with the psychological side of sport but also in how coaches can view what they do as a performance. It's so fascinating because coaches teach athletes how to do better, but very often coaches just have to learn by osmosis, of watching other coaches, and maybe they know the technical side of sport but very seldom are they actually educated on the performance psychology. This is a two part masterclass on what it means to build mental strength and be a great coach and leader.Wether you're an athlete, a coach, a parent, or business person, there's something in these episodes for you. Fueling To Maximize Performance In Sport & Life with Ellen Davis
Ellen Davis is a CSSD (Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics), entrepreneur, former division one athlete for the University of Missouri, and a proud boy mom. One of the things I really appreciate about Ellen is her practical advice, being able to distill the science of nutrition and fueling into something we can actually use in our daily lives. In this episode, Ellen and I talk a lot about:Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome, aka RED-Sfueling for performance in real lifethe impact of mindset on our nutrition and our nutrition on our mindsetnavigating fueling as a parentbalancing entrepreneurship and motherhoodDisclaimer, we do mention disordered eating and eating disorders, and while we don't dive in too deep here, I just want to say upfront that nutrition is an extremely complicated and challenging topic, and everyone has a different relationship with food. However, I think it's important to have these types of difficult conversations and help educate ourselves, especially as coaches and parents, in order to make sure we are helping fuel ourselves for our own performance, as well as set our athletes and kids up for success in sport and in life.Thankfully we have people like Ellen and her team at the Performance Collective that are here to help us navigate these choppy waters.
