Episode 58 - Suffering Begins With Resistance
In this episode, we explore the quiet but powerful truth that it’s not what happens to us that keeps us stuck—it’s what we continue to hold onto. Beneath our justifications of being realistic, loyal, or strong often lies a deep resistance to reality as it is, a survival response rooted in fear of losing identity, safety, or meaning. Drawing on the compassionate framework of Internal Family Systems, we unpack how different “parts” of us cling to old stories, roles, and pain - not to sabotage us, but to protect us. Yet when we resist change and argue with the past, pain turns into suffering, and identity can become a cage. Letting go isn’t about approving of what happened or erasing the past; it’s about loosening our grip so we can return to the only place life actually unfolds—the present moment. Through gentle reflection, this episode invites you to stop forcing yourself to move on and instead meet the parts of you that are holding on with curiosity and compassion. Because real freedom doesn’t come from rewriting the past - it comes from choosing, again and again, to live with open hands in the now.

Episode 57 - Healing From the Inside Out
In this episode, Joan shares her powerful, deeply human journey of reclaiming her health, mindset, and relationship with food after decades of reflux, bloating, fatigue, emotional eating, and long-term gut dysfunction. This is not a diet or weight-loss story, but a root-cause healing conversation that explores how gut dysbiosis, slow motility, and SIBO shaped Joan’s symptoms, cravings, mood, and self-talk—and how addressing the gut-brain axis led to lasting change. Through slow, supported, whole-food healing (not restriction), Joan lost over 11 kilos, resolved long-standing digestive issues, rewired emotional eating patterns formed in childhood, and describes the process as an awakening rather than a treatment. The episode highlights why symptoms are messages, not failures, how food acts as medicine, and why healing is possible at any age when the body is given the right conditions.

Episode 56 - Healing From Reflux
In this episode we interview our client, a woman who had lived with reflux for nearly 30 years—managing symptoms, stacking medications, and assuming it was just her “normal.” You’ll hear how asking why changed everything. We dig into what really drives reflux, why acid suppression often stops working, and how rebuilding digestion, restoring microbial balance, and simplifying food brought her genuine relief—not just from reflux, but from joint pain, weight struggles, and constant discomfort. It’s a story about turning off autopilot, questioning quick fixes, and discovering what’s possible when you stop managing symptoms and start exploring root causes.

Episode 54 - Healing at the Root
In this episode, we explore what it truly means to heal from the inside out — not by fixing or suppressing symptoms, but by understanding the deeper stories beneath them. Using the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, we uncover how our recurring patterns like perfectionism, anxiety, or self-sabotage are protective parts of us, each with a positive intention. Through compassion, curiosity, and connection to our core Self, we can transform these parts and lead our inner system with calm and clarity. This is healing at the root — coming home to who we truly are.

Episode 53 - How Small Hurts Break Big Bonds - and How to Heal Family
This episode explores the quiet ways family bonds can fray—not through explosive fights, but through small, repeated hurts that slowly erode trust and closeness. Through Sarah’s story, we witness how years of subtle criticism and dismissive remarks can leave lasting wounds, creating distance even when love remains. Science experts explain how chronic invalidation reshapes the brain, teaching us to suppress feelings and associate family with stress instead of safety. Yet this episode offers hope and gentle guidance, sharing tools for naming painful patterns, setting compassionate boundaries, and seeking peace—whether that leads to repair or release. It’s a compassionate reminder that love without emotional safety isn’t connection, and that choosing yourself is sometimes the first step toward true healing.

Episode 52 - The Power of Context
Understanding the full picture, or "context," is vital for healthy relationships and a peaceful mind. When we ignore the background details of a situation, we often fall into distorted ways of thinking, like jumping to conclusions, overgeneralising from single events, or only seeing the negative. To combat this, we need to actively seek context by asking questions like "What else could be true?" and trying to see things from other perspectives. This not only helps us understand others better but also allows for self-compassion by revealing the deeper reasons behind our own behaviours.

Episode 51 - Identity & the Quantum Connection
In this episode, we explore the work of Dr. Bruce Lipton, a cell biologist who challenges conventional scientific understanding, particularly in the area of epigenetics. The research of Lipton and others, demonstrates that our thoughts, beliefs, and environment have a profound impact on our biology and gene expression, rather than genes solely determining our destiny. We take a look at the existence of bioelectromagnetic energy, which is an interdisciplinary field that examines the interaction between electromagnetic fields and biological entities, including cells, tissues, and organisms and how various animal species use it to navigate and communicate. We take a look at our own cells, in a fascinating experiment involving astronaut Brian O'Leary . It hints at a form of long-distance biological communication, that suggests our identity might be more like a broadcast than a fixed physical entity. We investigate the implications of these ideas for healing, personal growth, and the future of medicine and encourage you to open your minds to new perspectives on consciousness and human potential.

Episode 50 - Why We Stay Stuck: The Hidden Patterns of Suffering
This episode explores why people stay stuck in harmful patterns, even when they know these behaviours hurt them. It shows how early experiences, like conditional love or unmet emotional needs, shape the stories we tell ourselves that can lead to shame, self-doubt, and unhealthy habits as adults. Using the example of a woman longing for a toxic relationship, it explains how these patterns often come from a deep need for love and validation. Healing involves changing these old stories, addressing emotional wounds, and learning self-compassion. By focusing on self-care instead of seeking approval from others, we can break free from these cycles and find true peace and self-worth.

Episode 49 - The Trap of Getting Stuck in Certainty Over Curiosity
This episode highlights the human tendency to prioritise certainty over curiosity, a behaviour rooted in the brain's primal need for safety. In the workplace example provided, a decision to offer a young employee minimal hours in her former field, alongside a new role, sparked unfounded assumptions among her future team. Without verifying the facts, they interpreted the decision as a threat to their positions, fuelling conflict and misunderstanding. There is an importance to emphasise adopting curiosity instead of jumping to conclusions. By pausing, asking questions, and seeking to understand others' perspectives, we can avoid miscommunication, emotional reactions, and unnecessary drama. This approach fosters clarity, reduces conflict, and promotes healthier interpersonal interactions.

Building real connections with others is important for our mental, emotional, and physical health. Research shows that being connected can lower anxiety, depression, and even improve survival rates. Episode 45 - What Holds us Back
Consider the last time you set out to make a change. Maybe you decided to start a new diet, save more money, or finally pursue that passion project. At first, you're excited, motivated, ready to take on the world. But then, almost as quickly as the inspiration came, it fades. The thrill of change is overshadowed by the discomfort it brings. Suddenly, that new diet feels like torture, saving money feels like deprivation, and your passion project seems like too much work. So, you retreat to what's comfortable—the familiar habits, the routines that don't challenge you, but also don't fulfill you. This isn't laziness or lack of willpower; it's biology. Our brains are wired to avoid pain, conserve energy, and seek pleasure. Pain represents danger, effort represents depletion, and pleasure is the reward we seek to balance it all out. But here's the catch—pleasure, especially the short-term kind, is fleeting. It's the quick dopamine hit from sugar, social media likes, or a shopping spree. It feels good in the moment, but it doesn't last. And when it fades, we're left in the same place we started, craving more of the same fleeting fixes. So, what happens? We trade our long-term goals for short-term comfort. We know what we need to do to improve our lives, but the discomfort of change and the lure of immediate gratification keep us stuck in a cycle of inaction. We become prisoners of our own minds, caught in a feedback loop that reinforces the status quo.But what if you could break free? What if you could learn to navigate the discomfort, to push through the fear, and to resist the pull of instant gratification? What if you could train your mind to see change not as a threat, but as an opportunity? This is where the power of mindfulness and coaching comes in. By becoming aware of these mental patterns, by observing them without judgment, and by understanding that they are not fixed, you can begin to disrupt the cycle. You can learn to sit with the discomfort, to feel the fear, and to move forward anyway.Mindfulness brings you into the present moment, where the fear of the future and the regrets of the past have no power. It allows you to see that the discomfort you're feeling is just a temporary sensation, one that will pass in a matter of minutes if you allow it to. Coaching helps you map out a plan, to set small, manageable steps that keep you moving toward your goals, even when your mind tries to pull you back. The journey of change isn't easy, but it's worth it. Imagine looking back on your life and realizing that the only thing standing between you and your dreams was a series of mild, fleeting discomforts—discomforts that you now know how to navigate. Imagine breaking free from the cycle of inaction, stepping into the unknown with confidence, and finally living the life you've always wanted. So, the next time you find yourself at the edge of that wilderness, don't let the invisible wall stop you. Push through it, one mindful step at a time. Your future self will thank you.

Episode 42 - The Power of Perspective
Today, we're exploring how the way we see things can change everything. Our perspective, or how we look at the world, is shaped by our thoughts and beliefs. Imagine it like wearing glasses that make you see things a certain way. Sometimes, we only see part of the picture, like using a microscope. But if we open up and look at things differently, like using a telescope, we can learn and grow. We talk about how our brain works, with one side liking certainty and simplicity, while the other side likes new ideas and creativity. By understanding this, we can learn to see things in a more balanced way, which can make a big difference in our lives.

Episode 30 - Shifting Perspectives & Staying in your Lane
Today, we embark on a transformative journey, delving into a paradigm shift that offers the potential to redefine how we navigate our lives. Imagine a world where we possess the power to shape our destiny not by manipulating others but by taking full responsibility for our own worldview and returning the same responsibility to others for their experiences. In this revelation, we uncover the concept of two distinct realms of models: ours and theirs. Our thoughts, emotions, actions, and outcomes compose our model, while others have their models shaped by their unique thoughts, feelings, actions, and results. This revelation calls us to recognize the futility of shouldering the burden of other people's models and encourages us to return them to their rightful owners. By doing so, we free ourselves from unnecessary guilt, take control of our own thoughts and feelings, and reclaim the power to author our own destinies. This paradigm shift is an invitation to take action and embrace the transformative potential that lies within our own models, liberating us from the confines of others' perceptions and judgments.

Episode 29 - Unveiling the Mind's Filter of Confirmation Bias
Confirmation bias is a natural cognitive tendency that influences how we perceive and process information. It leads us to seek out, interpret, and remember information that confirms our existing beliefs, while disregarding contradictory evidence. This bias arises from our evolutionary development, helping us make quick decisions for survival, but it can hinder critical thinking and lead to distorted perceptions of reality. The challenge lies in our attachment to our beliefs, associating them with our identity and ego. Being proven wrong can be emotionally threatening, causing us to resist change and maintain our current beliefs. Overcoming confirmation bias requires conscious effort, self-awareness, and intellectual curiosity. By questioning our assumptions, seeking diverse perspectives, and cultivating empowering beliefs, we can break free from the confines of confirmation bias and open ourselves up to personal growth and transformative change.

Episode 28 - Love Never Hurts - From Withdrawal to Connection
The notion that "love never hurts" challenges common misconceptions about love by focusing on its pure essence, untainted by expectations, attachments, or fears. This perspective emphasizes that love is an emotion fuelled by our own thoughts and perceptions, not the actions of others. It clarifies that when we withdraw love, we're robbing ourselves of its benefits, given the experience of feeling love belongs to the person who has generated that emotion with their thoughts. The idea of love hurting often stems from unmet expectations, and by dropping these expectations, we can eliminate much of the disappointment and pain. Love, when understood as an emotion rather than a set of actions, encourages open communication, understanding, and empathy in relationships. With this approach, love transforms from a source of pain to a catalyst for growth, healing, and deeper connections. The key lies in recognizing that love's power comes from within us and that by fostering self-awareness and compassion, we can build fulfilling relationships and self-love.

Episode 26 - Transforming our acts of duty into acts of love
The session today was inspired by a client's coaching session and the teachings of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher. Marcus believed in living in harmony with nature, both in the macro sense (universal Nature) and the micro sense (human nature). He emphasized that virtuous actions stem from living in accordance with nature. However, many people fail to do so because they remain trapped in their primal brain's instinctual desires, seeking immediate pleasure and avoiding pain. To achieve happiness and virtue, one must train the higher thinking brain to override the primal instincts and make decisions based on the long-term benefits aligned with nature. The coaching process involves challenging and replacing unhelpful thought patterns to reconstruct a new worldview that leads to a fulfilling life. The discussion further explores how this framework applies to various aspects of life, such as relationships, addictions, and decision-making, guiding individuals towards a happier and more purposeful existence.

Episode 25 - The Importance of our Enteric Brain
In this session we explore the intricate relationship between our gut health and mental well-being. We delve into the concept of the microbiome, a vast community of microbes residing in our gut which plays a crucial role in regulating brain activity and cognitive functions. The communication between the gut and brain occurs through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, enabling bidirectional information exchange. Remarkably, the gut microbiota produces neurotransmitters essential for the regulation of our body and brain. Imbalances in the gut microbiome have been linked to various neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. The latest research work emphasizes the importance of addressing the underlying imbalance in the gut microbiome to restore balance to neurotransmitter levels to improve both physical and mental health. We also reveal the potential of exercise as a powerful tool in supporting mental well-being.

Episode 24 - The Broken Model we use in our Relationships
In this episode, we delve into the complexities of relationships and the detrimental effects of having an "operating manual" for our partners. We explore how, over time, we compile a list of rules and expectations for our significant other, often without their knowledge, and how this can lead to dissatisfaction and even the end of relationships. We challenge the traditional model of relationships and propose an alternative: tossing out the manual altogether. By treating our partners as separate individuals with their own dreams, thoughts, and priorities, we can create a more harmonious and fulfilling relationship. We address objections and explore creative solutions for household responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility and open communication. Ultimately, we aim to free ourselves from the burdens of unrealistic expectations and find new ways to build happy and thriving relationships.

Episode 22 - How to feel, so you can stop avoiding your life
In this episode I teach a step by step process for how to process emotions, so you can stop avoiding life. We live in a society that stigmatises emotions and relegates discussions about feelings to therapy and so we have been conditioned to avoid, deny, and distract ourselves from negative emotions. We engage in activities that temporarily numb the pain or provide temporary relief, but in the long run, these actions lead to more suffering. Our primal instinct to move away from pain and toward pleasure keeps us locked in a downward spiral. We must recognize that experiencing painful emotions is a natural part of being human, and denying them only perpetuates our suffering. By accepting the 50/50 nature of life and allowing ourselves to fully experience and process emotions, we can find opportunities for growth and transformation. We need to examine the thoughts and stories that create our emotions, question their validity, and explore alternative perspectives. By becoming observers of our emotions and focusing on their physical sensations in the body, we can process them through to completion. Additionally, understanding that our thoughts and behaviours are often shaped by our conditioning and environment allows us to have compassion for ourselves and others. By breaking free from societal conditioning and embracing emotional intelligence, we can liberate ourselves from the cycle of pain and suffering.Let’s do this…Happy listening.

Episode 21 - What is self confidence and how to get more of it
Let's talk about what self confidence is, & how to get more of it.When we look at the model used in cognitive behavioural therapy and try to insert where self-confidence might fit into it, we could interpret it in a few ways. It could be a fact or circumstance that you are self confident. It could also sit in the result line, where you bring about the outcome or result of being self confident. The interpretation I want to focus on today is in classifying it as a feeling, and we’ll even refer to it as such. We say we feel confident or we don't feel confident. So if self-confidence is a feeling that we have about ourselves, we need to question 'Where does that feeling come from? Click to hear more.

Episode 18 - The Illusions of the Ego
In this session I want to explore the construct we have of our sense of self, which is really just a false identity that we create in an attempt to understand our world and our place within itIt’s the thing that makes us feel unworthy, unsafe and disconnected and at other times it will sabotage us with it’s superiority approach in adorning us with a lavish dose of self importance and impressiveness that we become entranced with. It’s the thing we fear … for how it will portray our identity and status in the world which in turn will affect the way we feel about ourselves. And so we hold back in life because of it. I’m talking about our ego…it’s under attack ….but probably not for the reasons you might think. We’re going to take a very compassionate non judgmental approach as we attempt to dissect and understand the role of this construct we have of our self.

Episode 17 - The Suffering and Misery we Create for Ourselves
Do we create our own suffering and misery? In this session I want to explore how the beliefs and expectations we hold on to …so dearly can be the source of so much of the suffering and misery we create for ourselves. We all have them, but what I want to show you…. is that it may be worth your while to have a much closer at them so you can see how they’re causing you so much pain and suffering in the form of resistance, disappointment, anger, frustration, loneliness, sadness…..and any other feeling you no longer wish to be inundated with. It’s at this point you might want to jump into defence mode…..and attribute these emotional states to what is actually happening to you from out there. From all the people, in what they say, how they say it, what they do or don’t do, from your job, from your children, parents, friends, your boss, the weather, the town you live in, even the country….you name it everything else that is happening outside of ourselves is …we think….responsible for how we feel..

It’s a loop we get stuck in, that’s not only unproductive but depletes us in such a way that we end up wanting to quit on some level…. because it’s simply not sustainable for us to continue on that way.If you can relate to this then you’re most likely doing one of 3 things I’ve identified that cause us to get stuck in these unproductive thought patterns.

Episode 14 - The 50/50 of Life
In this session I want to talk about the 50/50 nature of life and the suffering we cause ourselves in denying the truth or reality of what it means to live in a world of relativity. We forget that we were born into a world where the rules of the game are that for every action there is always an equal yet opposite reaction. This was Newton’s third law and in an extract from a book titled ‘The mathematical principles of natural translation in 1729’, Newton defines it as: the mutual actions of two bodies upon each other are always equal and directed to contrary parts....Visit https://link.themindmanual.com/Ep14 to watch this episode orSubscribe for more episodes on;Apple Podcast here: https://link.themindmanual.com/apple Spotify here: https://link.themindmanual.com/spotify Google Podcasts here: : https://link.themindmanual.com/google

Episode 13 - Running a Belief Audit
Today I want to encourage everyone to run a belief audit on an area of your life that isn’t producing the results you would like or is generating a feeling within you that you don’t like. We generally filter life through a lens of our beliefs. If we believe something to be true, our brain will tend to look for evidence to validate our view and so it becomes a focus for us. This function is carried out by the reticular activating system which connects the subconscious part of our mind with our conscious mind. Click to hear more...

Episode 12 - Dare of the Day
Today’s session has been designed to stretch you’re comfort zone. A lot of what’s been covered in previous episodes…. has been about the relationship with ourselves, processing our emotions and of course learning how to master our mind, which has all been very passive and conceptual. So I thought it might be time to take it a step further, and get into some action …for what good is any of it if we never put it into practice.https://www.themindmanual.com

Episode 11 - Discovering your Purpose
Welcome everyone to today’s topic on discovering your purpose.Tuning in to why we’re here and what it is that we’re here to do with our time on earth are some of life’s really big questions that we seem to devote very little time to. This may be because we think it’s found outside of ourselves and we just haven’t stumbled across it yet…or we don’t allow ourselves to ever really explore the question…for fear if we acknowledged it we might reject the life we already have, or the fear of failing if we allowed ourselves to pursue it. The other block I think we come up against is the belief that it’s actually not possible for us…. Whatever it is. https://www.themindmanual.com

Episode 10 - Fear & Emotional Pain
Today, I want to talk about the difference between emotional pain itself and then the fear of experiencing the emotional pain. They are two very different concepts that can produce very different realities…. And the thing that appears to determine whether we go on to develop all the fear around experiencing emotional pain is how hard we resist and wrestle with it…. as opposed to allowing it and processing your way through it. We can either meet it with a mindset of resistance and rejection, or allowance and acceptance. Which is not to say you condone or enjoy it, but that you just allow it to be present without pushing it away. What you resist, persists….so when there isn’t that resistance or opposing force, you’re then allowing it to pass right through. https://www.themindmanual.com

Episode 9 - How to Overcome the Tendency of Seeking Approval
Today I want to talk about this tendency we have in wanting to seek approval and winning the favour of others….which is driving so many of our behaviours and in particular the social revolution.
