Chip Scholz on the Hidden Truths of Family Business - Family, Fortune and the Lucky Sperm Club

Description "The lucky sperm club." That's what Chip Scholz calls the sons and daughters who inherit businesses they didn't build. He should know, he's spent nearly 30 years coaching leaders and organisations, much of it inside the particular chaos of family-run businesses. In this conversation, Chip and Fran trade stories from the front line, the emotional blackmail, the power grabs, the parking lot conversations where the real decisions get made. Chip explains the difference between a business built as an asset versus a legacy, and why hubris is the thing that kills family businesses from the inside. Along the way, he opens up about the stroke that reset his whole life, and how it led him from 200 nights a year in hotels to woodturning and writing. Fran shares her own hard years inside a dysfunctional family business, and the two find real common ground in how they've each had to rebuild after everything fell apart. We cover The difference between a family business run as an asset versus a legacy Why hubris and "believing your own bull" destroys family businesses The unspoken rules and parking lot meetings that really run a company What happens when private equity buys a family business Chip's stroke, and how it became the reset that led him to writing and woodturning The Second Mountain, moving from success to meaning and purpose Fran's own experience inside a dysfunctional family business About Chip Scholz Chip Scholz is an executive coach, author, speaker and craftsman who believes the best lives, like the best bowls, are shaped patiently, one careful decision at a time. After nearly 30 years coaching leaders and organisations, he's learned that meaningful change rarely happens all at once. He's the author of Small Decisions, Big Shifts, Every Dog Has Its Day, and Handoffs, a family business fable about leadership, succession and keeping your word. A stroke, several career reinventions, and years at a wood lathe have convinced him that craftsmanship isn't just about shaping wood, it's about shaping a life. Connect with Chip Website: scholzandassociates.com Email: [email protected] Instagram: instagram.com/chipscholz Facebook: facebook.com/Chippturns LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/chipscholz YouTube: youtube.com/@chipscholz1691 Threads: threads.com/@chipscholz Books on Amazon: Small Decisions, Big Shifts / Every Dog Has Its Day / HandoffsAbout Fran Fran Willoughby is an evidential medium, Reiki practitioner and intuitive facilitator, and the host of The Power of the Truth. In this episode I'm joined by Helen von Dadelszen, communications and vocal coach based near Geneva, Switzerland, and author of Courageous Action. Helen takes us from her theatre-filled childhood in New Zealand, through years working in the humanitarian sector, to a lightbulb moment watching brilliant HIV researchers fail to communicate their groundbreaking work on an international stage. We also get into a properly thought-provoking discussion about why some of history's most dangerous communicators, and some of today's, are so effective, even when what they're saying isn't good, or true.We cover:Growing up in a theatre family, and why never questioning nerves shaped Helen's whole relationship with performingThe moment watching brilliant researchers fail to land their message on an international stage that changed the direction of her careerWhat "audience-centric" communication actually means, and why it matters even more in multicultural, multilingual settingsWhether charisma can be taught, and the specific, learnable habits behind itA frank conversation about why manipulative or dishonest communicators can still be deeply persuasive, and what that reveals about the power of delivery versus contentThe hardest conversation Helen ever had to have, and what she'd do differently with hindsightHer book, Courageous Action, and the one courageous step she'd encourage every listener to take this weekAbout Helen Helen von Dadelszen helps smart, thoughtful professionals get their brilliant ideas out of their heads and into the world with clarity, confidence and impact. Armour Weight: Lisa Barwise on Burnout, Narcissistic Friendship and Coming Undone

In this episode I'm joined by Lisa Barwise, wellness alchemist, fitness feminist and bestselling author. Lisa takes us back to her edge-of-the-bed moment, the morning her legs simply gave out beneath her, and unpacks everything that had been quietly compounding underneath it. A narcissistic friendship with someone who was supposed to be like a sister to her. Unresolved grief, including losing both her parents by 22. A personal development organisation she'd been part of years earlier that turned out to be something far darker, and the strange, disorienting guilt of finding that out after the fact. And, running through all of it, what she calls Armour Weight™, the invisible load so many women carry without ever naming it. We talk honestly about a subject that rarely gets airtime, narcissistic friendships, not partners or parents, and what it actually looked like living alongside someone else's teenage son for two years while trying to protect him from it. Chris Coulter: Losing His Daughter Maddie to Suicide and Finding Purpose in Her Legacy

Please note: this episode contains open discussion about suicide, child loss, and grief. If you are struggling, please reach out to Samaritans on 116 123 or visit samaritans.org  In 2015, Chris Coulter lost his 14-year-old daughter Maddie to suicide. What he has built in her memory and the parents he has helped along the way, is one of the most moving stories I have had the privilege of sharing on this podcast. Chris joins me from Toronto, Canada, where he is the founder of MentorWell, an organisation dedicated to helping parents recognise the warning signs in their teenagers before it's too late. In this conversation we talk about Maddie. Who she was. The factors Chris believes contributed to her struggles, including a bitter divorce and her withdrawal from competitive swimming which had given her structure and purpose. And the long, devastating road of grief that followed. But this is also a conversation about hope. About finding meaning after the unimaginable. About how Chris now feels Maddie beside him every single day as his co-pilot in this work. We talk about: How grief really affects you over ten years -- not the version people tell you about, the real one The difference between how teenage boys and girls show mental health struggles, and why it matters Chris's community "When Something Feels Off" -- nearly 200 members across 20 countries and how it's helping parents feel less alone The Teen Signal Check tool, a simple 14 question green, yellow, red framework that has already been used by over 10,000 parents to assess whether their concerns about their teenager need urgent attention Why the most important thing you can do as a parent is listen... not fix, not advise, just listen How to support a friend or family member who has lost someone to suicide, and what not to say And the moment Chris stopped trying to return to the person he was before Maddie died, and found peace in becoming someone new.  About ChrisChris Coulter is the founder of The MentorWell, a Toronto-based organisation helping parents recognise warning signs in their teenagers earlier, and helping employers support the working parents on their teams. His work is rooted in the loss of his daughter Maddie, who died on April 11, 2015 at the age of fourteen. Everything he has built since exists because of her.Chris is the author of Wake Up, You Could Lose Your Teen to Suicide, a mental health columnist for Healthing.ca, and a keynote speaker on youth mental health and workplace wellbeing. Religious Cult to Workplace Culture Expert: Peter Greedy’s Journey Into Truth

In this episode, Fran sits down with Peter Greedy, an optometrist-turned-coach whose life took an extraordinary turn when he became part of the UK religious group Antioch in 1983.Peter spent 15 years inside its tightly controlled world, communal living, patriarchal teachings, no-dating rules, love-bombing, and an intense culture of obedience. He shares how he was first drawn in as a young man newly arrived in London, how members were recruited, and how allegations and internal handling of abuse shaped the community from within.A major organisational split in 1998 finally pushed Peter and his family out, leaving him to face the truth of what he’d been part of and who he was without it.But this isn’t just a story about leaving a cult. It’s about the patterns that follow us into the workplace. Now a researcher and PhD student in coaching psychology, Peter reveals the striking similarities between high-control religious groups and the way some leaders run teams, companies, and even sports organisations. He shares insights from his Workplace Culture Index, showing how culture is built (or broken) by behaviour, not branding.Together, we explore: • How coercive dynamics show up in everyday organisations • The power of emotional intelligence and psychological safety • Why questioning, critical thinking and connection are cultural lifelines • What recovering from a high-control system really looks like • How leaders can build cultures rooted in trust, belonging and humanityThis is a conversation about truth, autonomy, and the courage it takes to see what’s really going on — whether you’re in a church, a company, or a community.A powerful, eye-opening episode. Listen wherever you get your podcasts.About PeterI am passionate about and specialise in personal development, building high performing teams, enabling great leadership and optimising workplace culture. This is borne of significant lived experiences - being a religious cult member for 15 years (1983-1998), working in a corporate environment for 12 years, and an extensive career in primary healthcare meeting people from every walk of life. My career in optometry has spanned 40 years having entered City University Optometry School in 1984. Finding Self-Worth and Letting Go: A Conversation with Ebi Diete-Spiff

In this powerful episode of The Power of the Truth, Fran speaks with worthiness coach Ebi Diete-Spiff - a woman who rebuilt her life from the inside out.Ebi shares the turning point in 2014 that shattered the illusion of confidence she had carried for decades and led her into a deep journey of self-awareness, healing, and what she calls self-mastery.Her story spans continents and lifetimes of emotional weight — born in the UK, raised in Nigeria, married at 19, and later living in Greece in a marriage marked by physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. She left in 1988, returned nine years later, had twins, and ultimately left again in 1999 for the final time. Eventually, she raised seven children alone in the UK.Through her truth-telling, Ebi links recurring patterns of rejection, people-pleasing, and seeking validation to early experiences of foster care and even the emotional environment around her mother’s pregnancy. She describes how these patterns resurfaced throughout her corporate HR career, her relationships, parenting, business decisions, and even her health — including thyroid issues and severe disc pain that professionals later connected to stored trauma. She also shares the tools and insights that helped her reclaim her worth: — EFT/tapping — The Emotion Code — Deep somatic work — Studying pain, trauma, and emotional release — And the book that helped her surrender stored hurt rather than endlessly analyse it: “Letting Go” by Dr. David R. Tipped as a future Second Sea Lord, Commodore Duncan Lustig-Prean, the holder of three Commendations for Leadership, was dismissed from the Royal Navy in 1995 because of his sexuality. He went on to lead the campaign to lift the ban of gays in the military and challenged the UK in the European Court of Human Rights. In 2000 the ban was abolished with new rules and support mechanisms prepared by Duncan in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence. A tireless campaigner he successfully campaigned to change anti-gay legislation on two further occasions. He was also heavily involved in other areas of equalities including improving recruitment from the global majority, women in the front line and latterly, opening up the performing arts to groups often excluded from them.In more recent years, together with the charity Fighting With Pride, Duncan campaigned for an Inquiry into the treatment of LGBT people. He was an informal adviser to the judge leading the Inquiry. As a result of this restitution is being made to the victims of the LGBT ban on gays in the military.Duncan’s varied career includes Commodore of a Merchant Shipping Line specialising in firefighting and salvage, CEO of a large firm of solicitors, Deputy Director General of the ASA, and a number of years as senior instructor with easyJet. He is now Chair of Brighton Fringe, the second largest Fringe in the world and chair of a new charity OUTstanding which provides mentoring and residential courses to help with the trauma LGBT veterans still experience because of the cruelty and abuse experienced during their dismissals.Duncan has been given a number of awards for his work in equality including the Prix de Nantes, Stonewall Equality Award and the Mike Rhodes Award. He was nominated for a BAFTA for a feature length documentary he advised and appeared in and also an Iris award for another short film.Support for restitution applications is available from Fighting with Pride at Fighting With Pride: The Armed Forces LGBTQ+ Charity Support with trained mentors and access to residential courses and social events is available from the new charity OUTstanding which cares for LGBT veterans who lost their careers.
