#182 - Making Healthcare Human Again (SOCIAL, MENTAL/EMOTIONAL, INTELLECTUAL, SPIRITUAL, and VOCATIONAL Well-being) | Stephanie Lurch (2011 Bodegas Patrocinio Zinio Tempranillo)
Send a textIn this episode, we sit down with Stephanie Lurch, health equity leader, educator, and advocate whose work is grounded in a simple but radical idea: healthcare should be human.Against the backdrop of the current political climate and the evolving relationship between Canada and the United States, we explore how two neighboring countries with vastly different healthcare systems approach care, equity, access, and dignity. While national-level reform often feels slow, stalled, or uncertain, especially in the U.S., this conversation focuses on what individuals, clinicians, and communities can do now to restore humanity to healthcare.Together, we examine how power, culture, and policy shape patient experiences, and how relational care, storytelling, and community engagement can transform health outcomes, even within imperfect systems.Support the showThe hashtag for the podcast is #nourishyourflourish. Send a textChronic Inflammation: When the Body Is Whispering and Why Women Pay the PriceDescription:Dr. White explores chronic inflammation as a biological signal of unmet needs rather than a disease itself. This episode explains why women are uniquely vulnerable, how inflammation intersects with hormones and immunity, and why many “healthy” foods including dairy, soy, seed oils, and processed protein products can quietly drive inflammatory responses. Using the Eight Dimensions of Health, listeners are guided toward prevention rooted in self-trust, biology, and integrative wisdom.Support the showThe hashtag for the podcast is #nourishyourflourish. #142 - Journaling the Journey: MY JOURNAL | Maggie Maris (Bonarda Malbec)
Send a textJournaling (expressive writing or gratitude journaling) is a widely used non-pharmacological tool for coaching and counseling and the treatment of a wide variety of health challenges. Writing about stressful and traumatic events can significantly benefit our physical and emotional health. In fact, studies show that time spent journaling about our deepest thoughts and feelings can even reduce the number of sick days we take off work. Journaling can help us accept rather than judge our mental experiences, resulting in fewer negative emotions in response to stressors. Journaling, a therapeutic intervention used in many different disciplines and psychological approaches, is easy to implement and get started and it can benefit people experiencing an array of health challenges including and not limited to:anxietydepressionstress managementreflectionrecoveryWith practice, journaling can help process emotions–even ones that have been avoided or held back–and lead to a better understanding of how to proceed.About Our Guest:Maggie is a writer, life coach, and founder of Maggie's Way, a methodology in the field of mental well-being with a focus on adults who are under significant pressure in our current society. #141 - NOURISH YOUR FLOURISH NUGGET | Vernal Equinox (Bye, Winter!)
Send a textThe arrival of the spring equinox is a moment of rejuvenation and rebirth as flowers begin to bloom and sunlight warms the northern hemisphere. As the sun moves along the equator, it brings warmth and power, allowing us to welcome the joys of spring, including the beautiful flowers and greenery Mother Earth provides. This balance reminds us to take a break from our daily routines and reflect on the need for equilibrium in our lives. Let's use this opportunity to pause and embrace a new season with a fresh outlook. The spring equinox, which coincides with the beginning of Aries Season, is often celebrated and is referred to as the Astrological New Year. Being that action planet Mars governs the zodiac sign Aries, this time is known to set off the astrological year with a bang because it brings a lot of energy, desire, and passion to our hopes and intentions.Dealing with these intense and juxtaposing energies can be overwhelming, but there are ways to manage. As the sun transitions from Pisces to Aries, we move from water to fire, which can be a lot to handle. However, taking care of ourselves during this time is crucial. Here are some techniques to help recharge, reset, and restore our vibe through self-care during the spring equinox:Use a ball to release tense spots in the body like the back, shoulders, hips, and glutes. Just a few minutes every night while you're watching a show or talking on the phone can build a nice self care habit into your routine. You'll feel great every time. This will wash away emotional stress stored in the body from winter.Movement is medicine. Walk and stretch so that your joints — and entire spine and skeleton — keep moving and stay happy. Go out for a walk, connect with nature, and stretch out your body.Treat yourself with kindness. Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with affirming and supportive statements. Also, connect with supportive friends as it can be great to share your experiences and receive encouragement. Take occasional breaks from digital devices to reduce screen time and create a more serene environment for healing to be present and to find balance.Rest is the most important activity. We spend so much time outwardly and when we pause to offer ourselves some energy work, it’s a very nurturing and internal act. By creating this moment in our days, we’re emphasizing to our brains that this is important. So, the more we create these kinds of self-care, the more we’re building up our self-awareness — which can really help boost any efforts to create new habits.Relax your mind and your body will follow. Your body and mind keep score. Be mindful of taking time to meditate to ground yourself. All of this advice will help you spring forward into the new season with ease.Support the showThe hashtag for the podcast is #nourishyourflourish. #139 - NOURISH YOUR FLOURISH NUGGET | Insulin Resistance
Send a textInsulin is a metabolic hormone made by the pancreas when you eat that tells your body’s cells that fuel, in the form of blood sugar or glucose, is available for immediate use. In some cases, for a variety of reasons, the body’s cells don’t respond to insulin as they should and can’t easily take sugar from the blood. The pancreas reacts by producing more insulin to try to keep up with higher blood sugar levels. This condition is known as hyperinsulinemia. If your cells become too resistant to insulin, it can result in elevated blood sugar levels, which can lead to weight gain, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Losing weight with insulin resistance is more difficult because the body stores excess blood sugar as fat. While excess body fat — especially around the waist — and lack of physical activity are primary causes of insulin resistance, many people with insulin resistance don't start off this way. A diet of highly processed carbohydrate foods and saturated fats is another contributor.Dietary changes (especially those germane to one's blood type), physical activity, and some herbal remedies can help reduce both blood glucose and insulin levels.Low-carb diets that emphasize healthy sources of carbs, fat, and protein can reduce insulin resistance.Support the showThe hashtag for the podcast is #nourishyourflourish.
