19. THE secret to growth and success in your business
Before we dive into the episode today, I want to give you a little peek behind the curtains of the vision I’ve been holding for this space – Conscious Business School. As some of you know I’ve been working in business, entrepreneurship and marketing for almost 2 decades and in the online business space since gosh – 2017/2018. And, in my opinion there’s been something missing for a while. It has never been my intention to primarily be a coaching-based business. As much as I love working with people 1:1, my true passion is 1:many and in holding space, guiding. What’s been missing for me is a space, a community, a platform, a lounge if you will for like-minded, like-spirited entrepreneurs – the visionaries, the purpose-driven, the passionate creators and healers to connect, gather, learn, be supported, be pushed, to move past edges and to step into a new level of possibility. How I envision this happening is a mix of self-led, mentor-facilitated and experiential learning. Short co-horts, classes, gatherings and experiences. Online, offline. A central place where you find everything you need to move the business off the pages of your journal into the real world so that you can be the embodiment of the entrepreneur you’ve longed to be for probably as long as I have. It’s a space unlike anything I’ve experienced through coaching programs and 1:1 sessions. I couldn’t quite find it so, very projector/leo of me – I thought fuck it I’ll build it. Why am I telling you this? This is me taking a step to move the vision out of the shadows and into the world. To be held accountable to the vision. And, to invite you into the first chapter of that. This week I want to riff on something that I brought up in an instagram post because I feel like it needed a little more time and space to percolate and be articulated. It’s this: One of the biggest perspective shifts you can make in your business is to approach the building it layers -- to iterate. I like to use analogies to help simplify what I’m trying to say. So think about building a house – you would never build the roof before the foundation is laid. Building your business is the same – you start with defining and clearly articulating the elements of your brand – your business anchors and then you layer on top of that foundation various products, services, systems, structures and strategies based on a balance of the resources you currently have and those you are foreseeing in the near future. 18. Brand-Building is a PRE-REQUISITE for a successful product launch

When you build the foundations of your brand, you build an audience rooted in deep connection and trust. 17. The ONLY 7 Things You Need to ACTIVATE Your Business

In the last few episodes I’ve shared about different angles of activating your business. What I mean by activating your business is moving it across the threshold of dream or idea to reality – launching your business into the world. 16. The Importance of the BUILD phase

I vulnerably told you about how I sat in the shadows for 5 years – and certainly not for lack of know-how because I’ve been doing this for some time in both my corporate career and in the background of other people’s businesses. While I wish I had moved, I took action soon – I don’t look back with regret – in fact I don’t regret many things in my life. I never have. I heard Peter Crone on a podcast say once: It couldn’t have been any other way because it wasn’t and that really helped me move forward from the past without regret. You can’t change it, only learn. I digress – on my journey, there have been key moments of inflection that changed the course of my actions or that (finally) landed in a way that I could receive. There were perspective shifts but most importantly there was key, simple, focused intentional action taken. Because activation requires action. Which transitions nicely into what I want to chat with you about today - highlighting the importance of the BUILD phase of building your business. Before we get into the nitty gritty of the podcast I think we need to chat about the expectation vs reality of building your business and the impact that social media has on us. Glamorizing income and setting the expectation to instant success. This type of messaging has been sitting funny with me for a while and I think I’ve finally settled into why. It completely glosses over the early, necessary and often most important phase of your entrepreneurial journey that every business must go through – the initial build. 13. WHO is your business for?
Fam! welcome back to the podcast. Today I’m feeling all hot and bothered about defining who your business is here to service and why that is so important. So this episode is going to be my hot take on that. Your ideal dreamy client, who your business is in existence to serve, why that matters and how to apply it to your business. It’s a tale as old as time in entrepreneurship that many of you, as you begin your journey, will think they’re product or service is for everyone. That there isn’t one person on this planet who their product or services can’t help. And, they might not be wrong. Maybe it can help large groups of diverse people. But truthfully, you do not want it to. You aren’t for everyone. You are not. And you don’t want to be for everyone. All it takes is one really misaligned client or customer who doesn’t quite get you or what you are here to do to prove to you that maybe you I’m right, maybe everyone might be too broad of a brush stroke. Getting clear on this can literally change your business. Getting clear on this can literally change your business. And I get it, when you are early in business and make little to no money, you’ll want to take any opportunity you get. And sure you can, but you’ll quickly find yourself in the exact same situation you did working a full time job that you hate doing things that are misaligned. We are not here for that. We are here to build conscious businesses – which I define as purpose-driven, heart-aligned and heart-led. Ones that feel good to be in (most of the time). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again because it bears repeating - the #1(of I would say 5) things that I remember and still take with me in life almost 2 decades later, from my 4 year university degree in marketing is this – I’ll save you the tuition fee and give it to you for free ( you are welcome) If you try to speak to everyone, you end up speaking to no one. And the other side of that truth is when you narrow your focus to one. One dreamy ideal client who ticks all the boxes and who is with you for the long haul and you speak DIRECTLY to them – you are clear on who you are and how you help them, they are clear on who you are and how you help them and so is everyone else. Then the ‘everyone’ group can choose if they want to work with you or not. Get it. By speaking to the one, you clearly articulate to everyone (whether directly or indirectly).i This is why defining who you are here for is a business anchor. 12. Clarity Sells & Confusion Creates Noise
Hey friends, welcome back to the podcast! Today’s episode is going to be short and sweet. Because I think this topic is so important, I don’t want to take away from the point by saying too much. It is essentially this: CLARITY IN YOUR BUSINESS is what makes you money (i.e a business). Lack of clarity creates confusion for you and your ideal dreamy client and when they are confused anything you say and do is noise, which they screen out. To summarize - Clarity sells and confusion creates noise. Thank you for coming to my ted talk. When there is clarity in your business you project confidently. And when you are confident people listen. You speak with authority and people see you as someone they can trust to guide them. So clarity creates confidence. Confidence and clarity doesn’t have to mean you know everything and it definitely doesn’t have to mean you are untruthful about where you are in your business. It just means you are clear and confident in who you are today, the journey that has gotten you here and your ability to help others with what you have today. It also means you are confident in the vision of the future and your ability to get there. Your ideal dreamy client wants to know you believe in yourself. They don’t want you to look to them to validate your confidence or ability. That shakes their ability to put trust in you as their guide. They also want you to speak clearly to them in a way that they understand. They get lost when you make assumptions on what they know or where they are,, when you speak around the point and when you use industry jargon or coach speak. You lose them in anything other than the plot, the point. Stand confidently in who you are, speak directly to your ideal dreamy client, remember less is more and if you aren’t seeing the results you want there is a lack of clarity somewhere. Don’t give up, iterate and make microadjustments until who you are, what you do and for who is so clear that your ideal dreamy client knows what they can expect from you, what you can help them with and how to buy from you. 11. Treat Your Business Like An Experiment

Alright, let's get to the good stuff shall we? I know I pick on the corporate world a bit, however there are lessons and learnings I’ve taken with me from almost 2 decades in the space that I infuse into all the work I do with you both in the business coaching space and the breathwork space (@the_heart_portal) The first of those is how I approach coaching. I don’t think it’s my job to tell you what to do. Predominantly because not many people like to be told what to do or told that they are wrong, especially as adults. It’s disempowering. It is my job to help you see where you are, and why you are stuck from a different perspective. How I do that is through asking questions. Questions can be the catalyst for changing just about anything. And if I can pose a question that helps you see the problem you are facing in a new way or helps a new idea to drop in, that’s empowering – and you did that. I mean I have lots of opinions, don’t get me wrong. But it is my job to ask more questions than the opinions that I offer. The second of those is that success is rooted in the ability to treat your work like an experiment. Anyone can follow steps but try innovation and deep work happens when you innovate and to innovate you need to experience. You experiment with ideas and approaches, products and messages. Some ideas have legs, most won’t. But no amount of information consuming or analyzing will guarantee success. You only know if you are willing to try. So, to meld both of these things together and present a jumping off point for today’s episode: Can you begin to approach your business through the lens of it being an experiment? 9. Your Business Requires Focus
Hey Folks, welcome back to the podcast. As always it is an honor and a pleasure to have you here in my space. Vulnerable share, I’m going to let you in on a practice I do sometimes. When I’m having a real hot take on a topic I like to do what I call a RIFF on it. More often than not these happen when I’m either driving or walking so I whip out my voice notes and just let myself stream of consciousness (or verbally vomit) all that I want to get out of the idea. Well, you are in for a treat because this week was a good one. This week, I had a little Hot Take Riff on FOCUS IN YOUR BUSINESS. And trust me this isn’t about me telling you how to work and that you need to work for 8 hours uninterrupted…we’re adults here and it’s your job to figure out how the best way for you to do meaningful work is. I certainly don’t have it all figured out and my phone screen time will attest to that. I am playing with different tricks and methods to create focus in my work which I’m sure I’ll share once I master. SO let’s zoom out from the minutiae of how to focus your work to why you need FOCUS in your business and what you should be focused on. Here’s the thing…FOCUS is not only the keys to but the whole doorway to success in your busienss. They are laser focused on two things – their vision and what it takes to get there. They do focused work, they focus their intention and their attention. They don’t dilute what they do with all the shit on the periphery that is really just a distraction from ‘going all in’ on their vision. They focus on impact and meaningful movement. 8. YOU Are The Secret Sauce In Your Business
This week's episode is going to be short and sweet. I'm going to get right to the point - In your brand and your business YOU are the secret sauce. YOU. The more you are in your business, the more you fully express that version of you in your business (that doesn’t mean airing all your dirty laundry) letting people connect with YOU, the more successful your business can be. This thought was actually a spark of an idea that came to me today as I am 1 full day into IG threads. I’ve had a few people reach out to me and ask how to use or approach the platform, that reposting content from other platforms isn’t going to fly – and it it isn’t. My response to them is not to overthink it. To think of it as the first day at a new school and you are letting the best aspects of your personality show so you can find your people. It’s an opportunity to let your YOUNESS show without having to worry about a catchy video or graphic. Which leads me to something I see in client work a lot – when I ask people to tell me why they, what is it about them that makes them unique, it astonishes me when they say I don’t know. HONEY. You are unique because you are you. You are the unique accumulation of the things you know, have experienced, think, have learned, believe. You’re your own unique snowflake that can’t be replicated. 7. Re-defining Success
Today’s episode is going to be short and crispy. Before I ask the question I want you to think about, remember in my first episode I told you that two of the three core tenets of what I do here are reclaiming the corporate dream and building conscious businesses and the question I’m inviting you to explore is kind of where these two things intersect. My question is: Is it time for you to re-define what success means to YOU? When you enter the corporate world, the target for success is pretty well defined for us. It’s like we got handed a to-do list and each milestone we crossed off, each promotion, each raise was one more thing done on the pathway to retirement. Success is defined by your loyalty to a company, your ability to follow the rules, to achieve bigger titles and reach new income brackets. This was the traditional definition of a well lived life. Until people like you and me started to question– is it? Is this what success means? Because I found myself following the path, doing the thing, crossing off the milestones and it didn’t make me feel like I was living life at all. Something felt off about it. I found myself asking questions like ‘Is this it?’ ‘Is this all there is?’ I thought I would feel different. I thought I would feel different. The funny thing about entrepreneurship is old habits die hard. I did it myself, I have and do coach others who do it and I’ve seen some pretty big names in the space do it - we try to define our success by a title, how many employees we have or how much we make. And what I’ve seen behind the curtains of some big names out there is, when they do hit the dollar amount that is deemed successful, they start asking themselves the same questions…is this it? Is this all there is? I thought I would feel different. What has become abundantly clear to me is if you are in the business of creating a conscious business – one that is intentionally focused, heart-led, purpose-driven, one that wants to make an impact it can’t be driven by the old structures. Money targets are just that – targets, goals and achievements. They are something we celebrate for having achieved…and then what? They aren’t the measuring tool used to define success. For me, the idea of success shifted from a dollar figure, a title, how many people I manage to it actually being an embodiment of what’s most important to me, how I define living, my values. It’s ok to want your business to be successful in the transitional sense, cash positive, growing. Maybe the real distinction to make here is, rather than re-defining success is to disentangle what personal success is from business success. We can build a business that is plush with cash but if we are doing it in a way that doesn’t support the life we want to build what’s the fucking point. 6. NEEDING to make money is suffocating your business
We've all been there, in a state of desperation NEEDING, WISHING, PRAYING to make money, to alleviate the pain and discomfort of where we currently are in life an business. The bad news is DESPERATELY NEEDING to make money is choke-holding your business. The goodness, there's lots you can do about it. If you feel this, don't worry -- you aren't alone. In fact most entrepreneurs go through it at some point. But, the desperation of it having to work is permeating everything you do in your business - every move you make, ever post you put out, ever action you take. Ironically, it's the one thing that's stopping you from actually making money. The paradox right?! I tend to see this happen at three distinct stages of business: 1. The 'just getting started' entrepreneur when you find yourself desperately seeking a way out of your current job or life and want your business to be the (quick) golden ticket. 2. The 'fly by the seat of your pants' entrepreneur who flitters, resists structure and blows in and out of their business like the wind. 3. The business who's lost sight of the vision - focusing primarily on money and doing anything it takes to hit an artibrary number. So, what do you do if you find yourself in one of these three categories? You find or create a way to release the pressure off your business (financially and energetically). Doing so doesn't mean anything about our ability, your worthiness or your lovability. Any judgment is PURLY your own. Tune in to find out more. 5. Let's talk about sales without the ICK.
It's time we give sales a rebrand. It isn't the thing to be feared, dreaded or even avoided because - without sales you don't have a business...ouch, right. I've seen so many incredible entrepreneurs stay in the shadows of their business because they are afraid of 2 things: 1. Marketing (being seen, heard, witnessed, possibly judged). Truthfully, I played in the shadows for years because I was so traumatized by sales in my corporate career. Most entrepreneurs will either loathe the idea of selling or fear that they sound too sales-y. Well, my friend, it's time we shift how with think about sales. To start, think we are overcomplicate it. Here's what sales really is: A product of offer that does one of a few things (pain, problem, desire, transformation). A clear picture of WHO that product is for. (Ok, things are starting to sound familiar around here...i.e. your business anchors) A place to talk to them To tell them about your offers (over and over again) A way to exchange $$ for product In today's episode I share with you the perspective shifts that I've made to go from hating everything about sales to actually kinda loving it. The thing is, sales gets a whole lot easier when you... You deeply believe in who you are and what you are here to do. You LOVE the product or service you are selling. You can clearly articulate what it is you do (in a way that your dream client understands – specifically what you can do for them). You make it easy for people to buy from you. You show up (consistently) to SHOW and TELL them what you do. You stop taking the NOs personally. Remember you are a business and businesses sell things. The people who work at Nike, Lululemon or a car dealership wouldn't hesitate to come up to you and ask what you were looking for out of fear of sounding too salesy.....helllll no. 4. How to step out of the shadows of your business
Oh goodness what an episode! I'm going to forewarn it was SPICY and I dropped a few f-bombs. A few episodes ago, I told you that the 2 things you need to create a successful business are: a clear vision and strong business anchors. These are the foundations of any and every business. And I stand by that. BUT.... ...big but. That's not all. And I've seen so many incredible entrepreneurs get stuck spinning in this phase of their business for years trying to get it just right. I call this playing (or hiding) in the shadows of your business. It's when you study, plan, dream, strategize and figure out how to build a successful business but never actually do the damn thing to make it a reality. You spin in the shadows. And, truthfully, without action you don't have a business. In this episode I want to add the next layer to your business foundations. We talk about some of the common things that keep people stuck in the shadows. I said from the very beginning that the journey of entrepreneurship will bring you face-to-face with all of your limiting beliefs, fears and doubts. Ultimately those are what keep you spinning. So, where do you go from here? You have a vision and a foundation, how do you keep yourself from getting stuck there. There are two things you need to do: 1. Get incredible HONEST about where you are and what you have to give the business. This will change as the season of your life changes but it will help temper your expectations of yourself so that you can prioritize what you need to do, what you are willing to and capable of giving to making that dream a reality. 2. YOU NEED TO MAKE MOVES. Period. I've said this maybe 100's of times in my 5 year coaching career: YOU CAN NOT THINK YOUR WAY INTO YOUR BUSINESS. You will reach a point when the only thing left to do is to move or your dream biz will remain just that -- a dream. Move, iterate, move again. Imperfect action baby! That's how you come out of the shadows. And I promise you this, the more moves you make, the easier the moves will be to make. So there you have it! The next layer of a successful business. 3. What it Means to 'GO ALL IN' On Your Business
In today's episode I riff on the term "going all in" on your business. One of my favourite things to do, and I blame this on being a Projector in Human Design, is to notice patterns and trends and to decipher them or to give you my hot take. I love to cut through the fluff of what you see in the online business space. There's so many buzz words going around, I think we can all agree there's plenty of fluff. So, we look at what it means to go ALL IN on your business. You hear coaches say it, you see creators selling products around how to do it, what does it actually mean. We think it means quitting your job, turning your life upside down, burning the boats as Tony Robbins would say. But what it actually means is something much more subtle -- and might not require you to leave your job at all. Going all in starts with and is anchored into a decision. A decision to FULLY COMMIT to your desire. It's one thing to have the desire for a life or business but a desire alone isn't enough. You have to decide that this is what you will do and become unshakable in that decision. I talk about the difference between 'saying' you've decided and actually deciding. Also, going all in for you is going to look very different than what going all in means to me. Find the edge of your comfortability with risk and slowly push it. Pushing your edges. 2. What Are Business Anchors (And Why Do You Need Them)?
Today's Episode is a DOOOOZY! This stemmed from a few conversations I've had with entrepreneurs lately who felt like they were flailing in their business. What I mean by that is that they didn't feel grounded and clear in what they had to do, what to work on next, or which direction to go. They feel ungrounded in what had to get done, their offers and the direction they were headed in. They were changing direction like they were changing their clothes and frankly, it's exhausting. So I asked, How strong are these two things in your business: 1. Your Vision 2. Your Business Anchors Your vision is far bigger than your income markers or the things you will do...I hear these a lot: I'll be talking on stage, I'll be writing a book. That's awesome - but it's not your vision. Your vision is big, not something that happens in an instant and something that could have a million different iterations. It's the world you want to live in or create with what you do. It's how you want people to feel. Your business anchors are who you are, what you do, for who, why you do it and why you are the one to do it. It's not the list of qualifications, modalities and practices that you've accumulated to date. These are HOW you do what you do, which will morph and change over time. Your business anchors will RARELY change. Telling people the list of offers, qualifications or modalities is like telling me you are making something with water, flour and eggs -- that could be ANYTHING. I want to know WHAT IT IS YOU ARE CREATING. Grounding into your business anchors will create a strong foundation from which to build your business. When these are solid, you can build just about anything. When these are clear there is no guessing at what you have to get done or what shiny object will pull you away. They help bring the vision back into focus when you lose your way -- and you will, we all do. Having a strong foundation will make the road back quicker and less painful. 1. The Beginning of Conscious Business School
In this episode, we ground into what you can expect in the space of Conscious Business School, what you can expect from me and the journey we are about to go on together. I am your host, Laura Murphy. I’m a marketing expert, a business coach and an entrepreneur and I help build conscious businesses. One’s that are purpose driven and heart led. My intention is to take the guesswork out of marketing and business building so get to building a biz and life that dreams are made of. It is my vision to build an online community of badass entrepreneurs who are living life to the fullest and doing work that they love to do. We ground unto the 3 values that I base all my work on.
