"5 Love Languages" from First Responder Wellness w/Caise & Corinne
Find out what you and your partner’s love languages are and how knowing this can improve your relationship. In this episode, Corinne Santore and Caise McHale dive into the practical application of Dr. Gary Chapman’s "Five Love Languages". They explore how these categories serve as a "basic premise" to help individuals become more effective and intentional in both showing and recognizing love within their relationships.--------------------------------------------------------------The Five Love Languages Defined: Acts of Service: Doing thoughtful, "extra" things that aren't just standard adult chores.Examples: Warming up scrubs in the dryer, filling the gas tank, or packing lunch.Gifts: It’s about the thought, not the price tag.Examples: Picking up a favorite candy bar (KitKat) at the store, a handwritten card, or wildflowers from the roadside.Words of Affirmation: Verbal expressions of appreciation, respect, and affection.Examples: "I don't know what I'd do without you" or "You look so good today."Physical Touch: Beyond sexual intimacy, this includes physical connection and "co-regulating" the nervous system.Examples: Holding hands, a peck on the lips, or rubbing a partner's back.Quality Time: Focused, undistracted attention rather than just "quantity" of time.Note: Watching TV together may not count if there is no interaction or connection.---------------------------------------------------------------------RESOURCES: SpeakEasy First Responder Outpatient Therapy https://www.speakeasyonmayfield.com/ 5lovelanguages.com/quizzeshttps://a.co/d/05lcgJyVLove Nudge App (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play)IAFF Center of Excellence - Rehab & Treatment for Fire Fighters https://www.iaffrecoverycenter.com/Bluecoatshttps://www.bluecoatsinc.org/ OAPFF –Ohio Association of Professional Firefightershttps://oapff.org/-----------------------------------------Therapists Corinne & Caise host First Responder Wellness: for the WHOLE Person. This unique podcast focusing exclusively on First Responder stories, challenges, needs and resources for the WHOLE person and their families. 10 Signs of Orthorexia: The Elusive Eating Disorder
Don't let its lack of classification fool you! Even though Orthorexia does not yet meet criteria for an already established DSM Eating Disorder, it can impact functioning & physical and emotional health and, moreso, it can be either a subtle gateway into other ED's or it can suspend a person on an ED recovery path by keeping them from full recovery with one foot in and one foot out. Marked by thoughts and behaviors that are disproportionately focused on health, wellness, diet trends and food & body fears. These are often absolute rules or choices with a rigid and black & white framework. Because those with Orthorexia may not be malnourished, may not be medically fragile, may not be in higher level of care and may not be overtly identified, they are often able to rationalize that they are not disordered. Some of these rules and ideas for food & wellness on their own may not be harmful practice & may be logical for some but in a rigid setting and in an ED prone brain they are only ok, until they're not ok. This podcast explores some specific features and behaviors of Orthorexia. Orthorexia: Symptoms, Risks & Treatment | NEDAThanks for listening! Sex Is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary by Agustín Fuentes
Human biology is far more expansive than the simple categories of female and maleBeing human entails a complex interplay of biology and culture, and while there are important differences between women and men, there are also many variations and overlap. Sex Is a Spectrum offers a bold new paradigm for understanding the biology of sex, drawing on the latest science to explain why the binary view of the sexes is fundamentally flawed*. Our conversation explores patterns across animal species, bio-cultural roles and impact, historical perspectives on sex & gender, why men have nipples, how female hyenas are bad a**, where political and social structures can occlude progress & how an honest, science-based foundation is paramount for being curious, learning & talking about the human experience at large.Agustín Fuentes is professor of anthropology at Princeton University. Aging Out of Foster Care: A Beautiful, Tough Story of Trauma & Resilience
"I have been to hell & back & now it's my time." And now in his inspiring voice! Like a Phoenix Rising from the Ashes: The Antonio Levert Story. Antonio Levert has a mission to educate and inspire advocacy for children & young adults in foster & adoptive care. His story is tough to digest but vital for conveying the gravity of need to protect & support our young people and the people who help them matriculate through life. Antonio bounced between over 10 placements including an adoptive home, numerous foster care settings, inpatient & residential stays and various levels of county and therapeutic interventions. He endured interpersonal disruptions, emotional and physical abuse, neglect & a scripted narrative that “he wasn’t good enough to be loved.” Even through these obstacles, glimmers of his value surfaced – he was a gifted & bright student, kindred & loving, eager, loyal, spiritual, strong willed & driven. But it would not be an easy path. At 30, he has evolved into a ‘phoenix rising from the ashes’: a rare & unique success story built on a shaky & sometimes cruel foundation. He teaches that what you learn to take away from your journey by having faith, addressing mental health, connecting with a community and finding grace and forgiveness will set you free and keep you ‘Rising!'Chapters: (00:00) Intro: Antonio Levert(01:15) History of Placements & Story(05:00) Statistically Unique (05:56) Sullivan Deckard Scholarship (07:20) Need for Community (08:19) A Brother & Mrs. Cross (10:43) Disrupting & Being Labeled(12:21) Neglect, Abuse & Acting Out (14:01) Generational Impact / BioMother’s Story(17:16) Faith’s Impact & Chapters in Life (19:10) ‘Mixed’ Families & Authenticity (21:10) Trusting In Self After Being ‘Given Up’ & Judged(24:15) Resilient Spirit v. Critical Memory Integration: Estefana Johnson "Finding the answers within."
“We’re not looking for answers outside ourselves, we know how to find them within."Today’s guest is Estefana Johnson, LCSW, a trauma therapist and Director of Clinical Training at ARISE Alliance, who’s leading the launch of a powerful new therapy model called Critical Memory Integration (CMI™). CMI™ is a modality that marries many components of evidenced-based trauma informed care into one gentle, quick and safe template for providers. CMI™ teaches that the client is the expert who can heal with experiential space where their subconscious can learn what it already intuitively knows. Engaging components of the program include using curiosity as an asset and defining mood and traumatic signals to learn and modify how you have adapted to past experiences. Estefana brings a passion and energy to this modality borrowing from her background with at-risk and foster care children with ASA Now, being a team player on Jacob’s Law legislature & her own personal journey as a first generation Mexican-American woman. CMI™ is potentially groundbreaking as a simple, intuitive & effective intervention for anyone suffering from trauma or mood dysregulation. ----------------------------------------------Chapters (00:00) Intro: Estefana Johnson background (04:50) The gift of adversity(06:50) Foster care support & Jacob's Law(07:22) Trauma-Informed School (08:33) Jacob's Mission Community Center(10:55) Trauma modality limitations & modifications(12:50) Melding practice modalities (13:20) Critical Memory Integration Defined(14:25) Therapist perspective (15:30) Working with trauma(16:00) Case study: learning to like myself (16:55) An experiential, subconscious & client-based model (18:00) Attachment styles & negative self-talk (18:47) "It happens organically" (19:50) Logic v. emotion / shame & complex trauma (20:20) Using signals for cues(24:00) Being tuned in and self-aware(25:50) Awakening & adapting to childhood memories (26:43) T3 Skills for regulation (28:56) The compass within & life worth living (33:00) Case study in curiosity (34:41) Tapping into organic knowledge (36:10) It's about how we adapt, not what we experience (37:28) Cautious and careful following the signal to integration (38:53) Brain learns subconscious signs (42:30) Staying curious (43:25) Learn to be loved and love one's self(46:30) Managing deportation fears, etc. (48:00) Looking for answers within not outside of ourselves(48:40) Evidence based options, provider list & training(54:00) Living in 'Awe' -----------------------------------https://www.instagram.com/ariseallianceinstitute/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5MyzV9KBg0eJ0uY88N-zCw https://www.facebook.com/AriseAllianceInstitute/ Mental Health & Wellness Training- ARISE Alliance Institute https://arisealliance.org/ ASA Now - Home https://www.asanow.org/ Jacob’s Law: Bringing Hope to their Futures | Foster Arizona https://fosterarizona.org/jacobs-law-bringing-hope-to-their-futures/------------------------------------------------------------Thanks for listening! “We didn’t shy away from having the really hard conversation.” ECHO: the Film.
“We wanted to be honest…and not try and solve it in 14 minutes.” Megan Peta Hill. Roxanne Fernandes and Megan Peta Hill are co-writers & co-directors on ECHO, a short film exploring the true and painful recovery journey of an eating disorder. Roxanne & Megan co-direct the film & Megan is a lead actor. They have put together a talented and dedicated team including producer, Makalya McIntosh; Dave Chick, composer and Robert Zawistowski, director of Photography. The short follows a day in Lana’s life where the noise and pressure of her eating disorder play host to every moment and experience. The short film takes a stark, poignant and uncomfortable look at the impact of an eating disorder, including how the disorder hijacks Lana’s entire physical & psychological wellness & threatens her relationships. Sharp, pulsing & emotive sounds & cinematography paint a picture on screen to how her ED brain misinterprets innocuous comments, how she fights to keep her story stuffed down in a self-shaming silence and how behaviors can be a comforting release from the relentless ED ‘noise.’ The film is currently finding exposure in film festivals across the US and Canada while fundraising for a feature length opportunity.https://seedandspark.com/fund/echo-post-production#story https://www.instagram.com/echoshort2024/Home - Looking Glass Foundationhttps://www.lookingglassbc.com/Echo (Short) - Full cast & crew - IMDbhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt35463275/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_cst_sm---------------------------------Thanks for listening! G is a 19 yo college student who tells us exactly what she experienced when her life flipped upside down thanks to the onset of panic attacks. Mental Health Recovery Family Guide: "Bloodlines: A Memoir" by Tracey Yokas
Today’s guest is the author of Bloodlines, a memoir of harm and healing, Tracey Yokas. This book is a must-read guide and tribute to any family in a mental health or eating disorder crisis. The book powerfully explores the concept of healing as a family unit and the complexities of self-discovery, long-term trauma, resilience and openness. When Tracey’s daughter is diagnosed with complex mental health and eating disorder challenges, Tracey discovers that she can only support Faith’s journey if she is willing to truly immerse herself in her own recovery story & to begin dispelling generational self-narratives & addressing negative behaviors. Tracey beautifully illustrates how shame lives in the silence and how we need to learn to just listen, be safer places for each other to land & redefine self-care to develop a loving relationship with ourselves that eventually enriches our families and ostensibly, all or relationships.Tracey’s tone in bloodlines is sharply honest & starkly specific but it lands the reader in a safer place where healing & hope are vibrant & exciting! First Responder Series - 'Married to Fire' : Benefits & Challenges w/Kris Weir
"I say, BE SAFE. He says, ALWAYS." Fire Family Benefits & Challenges w/Kris Weir Kris Weir, a licensed massage therapist, Reiki master teacher and NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Techniques) practitioner and wife of 20 years to a firefighter/paramedic with whom she has two fabulous children. Kris learned about my first responder series & shared how wonderful her life has been with her first responder but also quickly educated me on how first responder families can be overlooked and don’t have many resource for support. Kris wanted to share this story as part of the series to bring both the benefits and the challenges of being ‘married to fire’ to the forefront. She tackles everything from parenting, managing emergency situations, negotiating schedules, giving space where needed, maintaining the community and the impact of PTSD. Kris hopes to extend this conversation and build more support services for families starting from a local, grass roots approach! Alternative Therapies: EMDR, TMS, Ketamine, ECT, VR Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture & Biofeedback
In this episode, we explore the idea of how sometimes outpatient therapy is not enough. Outpatient is great for sustaining when you’re on a recovery path. It is usually a good fit for most mild to moderate symptoms. In some cases there are severe symptoms, medication resistance or several comorbidities potentially including addiction that demand more extensive and intense treatment paths. Most of these interventions are short term and can complement outpatient therapy – which can be more long term for those with complicated diagnosis or symptoms. This is a quick surface dive for the following: Eye movement desensitization & processing (EMDR), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Ketamine, Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Bio & Neuro Feedback & Virtual Reality Therapy.
