Menopause Rescue
by Dr. Polly Watson
Women may spend over a decade of their lives experiencing symptoms around menopause transition, while just over 10% of women’s healthcare professionals feel comfortable treating menopause. The conversation around menopause has evolved beyond hot flashes and night sweats to include how hormonal changes affect bone, brain, mood, heart and mental health. Midlife women can feel like they are drowning in symptoms. Many of them are not well served by health care providers who haven’t updated their knowledge on hormones since the WHI 20 years ago and influencers who are peddling potions and lotions which may not be effective. Menopause Rescue is here to give you a hand up. I’m a board certified gynecologist with certification in menopausal medicine as well as functional medicine. My goal is to revolutionize the menopause dialogue, using the transition as a spark to ignite health promotion. Secondly, we will discuss solutions for low libido, weight gain, mood changes, brain fog, hot flashes

The Physical Therapy Perspective on Menopausal Hip Pain: Gluteal Tendinopathy & Movement Patterns
Is your hip pain getting blamed on aging—or brushed off with “just take ibuprofen”? Have you noticed lateral hip pain showing up during perimenopause or menopause without a clear explanation? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by Dr. Bridget Ochuko to explore menopausal hip pain and the often-overlooked diagnosis of gluteal tendinopathy. Together, they explain how combining hormone care with movement-based physical therapy can reduce pain, restore function, and protect long-term mobility. 🌸 Gluteal tendinopathy is a common cause of lateral hip pain in menopause and is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed as aging. 🌸 Declining estrogen can weaken tendons, increase inflammation, and slow healing in the musculoskeletal system. 🌸 Hip pain does not always show up on both sides, even when hormonal changes are systemic. 🌸 Movement patterns, sleep positions, footwear choices, and prolonged sitting all influence hip and pelvic stability. 🌸 Weak glutes often lead to an overactive pelvic floor, creating a cycle of pain and dysfunction. 🌸 Physical therapy can serve as first-line care, helping patients avoid unnecessary imaging, medications, and delays in treatment. If you’re dealing with persistent hip pain in midlife—or feeling unheard in the healthcare system—this episode offers clarity, validation, and practical next steps to help you move with less pain and more confidence. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Sustainable Weight Loss: A Metabolic Health Approach (Part 2)
Are you gaining weight in midlife even though you haven’t changed how you eat or exercise? Do you feel like your body suddenly stopped responding to all the things that used to work? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by Kate Willis NP-C to unpack why weight loss in perimenopause and menopause is far more complex than calories alone. Together, they explain how understanding hormones, metabolism, and inflammation can help women create sustainable, realistic progress instead of constant frustration. 🌸 Hormonal shifts in perimenopause and menopause change body composition, increasing fat gain while reducing lean muscle. 🌸 Declining estrogen can worsen insulin resistance, making weight gain more likely even without lifestyle changes. 🌸 Gut health and fiber intake play a major role in appetite control, inflammation, and blood sugar balance. 🌸 Strength training and adequate protein are essential to protect muscle and metabolic health during midlife. 🌸 Chronic stress, poor sleep, and elevated cortisol can stall weight loss despite “doing everything right.” 🌸 GLP-1 medications and hormone therapy are tools—not shortcuts—and work best when layered onto strong lifestyle habits. If you’re a midlife woman feeling confused, blamed, or stuck, this episode offers validation, clarity, and science-backed guidance to help you move forward with confidence and compassion. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Sustainable Weight Loss: A Metabolic Health Approach Part 1
Are you gaining weight in midlife even though you’re eating well and exercising? Do you feel tired, hungry, and stuck no matter what you try? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and Nurse Practitioner Kate Willis discuss sustainable weight loss in perimenopause and menopause and why midlife weight gain is more complex than most people realize. They break down the science behind insulin resistance, hormones, stress, and metabolism—and explain practical steps that actually work. 🌸 Midlife weight gain is often driven by hormonal shifts, muscle loss, and changes in metabolic rate—not just calories. 🌸 Insulin resistance can increase belly fat, hunger, and fatigue, even when blood sugar looks “normal.” 🌸 Strength training and adequate protein are essential to improve insulin sensitivity and protect muscle. 🌸 Prioritizing protein, healthy fats, and fiber helps stabilize blood sugar and reduce cravings. 🌸 GLP-1 medications and metformin can be helpful tools when layered onto strong lifestyle foundations. 🌸 Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can worsen insulin resistance and impact thyroid function. 🌸 Sleep, sunlight exposure, and simple nervous system practices can improve metabolic health over time. If you’re navigating perimenopause or menopause and feel frustrated by stubborn weight gain, this episode offers clarity, validation, and realistic, science-backed steps you can start today. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Sleep Apnea in Menopause: The Hidden Cause of Fatigue, Brain Fog, and Hormone Imbalance
Are you exhausted even though you’re doing everything right? Still dealing with brain fog, weight gain, or poor sleep despite hormone therapy? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by dentist Dr. Arend Klooster to explore the powerful connection between sleep apnea and hormonal changes in midlife women. Together, they explain how identifying and treating sleep-disordered breathing can unlock better energy, clearer thinking, and more effective hormone balance. 🌸 Sleep apnea is far more common in midlife and postmenopausal women than most people realize, and it’s often missed or misdiagnosed. 🌸 Poor sleep and low oxygen at night can drive high cortisol, insulin resistance, fatigue, and stubborn weight gain. 🌸 Hormone therapy alone cannot fix symptoms if sleep apnea is disrupting deep, restorative sleep. 🌸 Many women with sleep apnea don’t snore or feel “sleepy,” but instead experience anxiety, brain fog, and low energy. 🌸 Home sleep studies make screening easier and more accessible than ever. 🌸 Oral appliances can be an effective, comfortable alternative for women who cannot tolerate CPAP machines. If you’re a midlife woman who feels tired, foggy, or frustrated despite doing all the right things, this episode offers clarity, validation, and practical next steps to help you finally address the root cause and feel better again. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Life After Ovarian Cancer: Navigating Surgical Menopause, Hormone Blockers, and Healing
Have you ever felt dismissed by doctors even though you knew something was wrong? Or struggled to feel like yourself again after a major health crisis? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson sits down with Jennifer Calogero to discuss her journey through ovarian cancer, surgical menopause, and long-term recovery. Together, they explore practical ways to advocate for your health, navigate hormonal upheaval, and support healing of both the body and mind. 🌸 Low-grade ovarian cancer is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, making self-advocacy a critical part of survival. 🌸 Surgical menopause can feel like falling off a hormonal cliff, affecting sleep, cognition, mood, and identity. 🌸 Cancer recovery doesn’t end when treatment stops—mental health and nervous system healing matter deeply. 🌸 Somatic therapy and breathwork can help regulate stress, process trauma, and reconnect with the body. 🌸 Open communication with medical providers can improve care but often requires persistence and clarity. 🌸 Community support beyond the medical system plays a vital role in long-term healing and resilience. If you’re navigating cancer recovery, menopause, chronic stress, or simply feel disconnected from your body, this conversation offers validation, insight, and grounded tools to help you move forward with greater self-awareness and strength. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina and Alabama? Understanding Women's Hair Loss: Personalized Approaches and Common Misconceptions from a Hair Loss Expert
Are you noticing more hair in your brush or shower drain than usual? Wondering what could be causing your hair to thin unexpectedly? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and Dr. Mary Wendel dive into the complexities of women's hair loss, exploring its causes and effective treatments. They emphasize the importance of a personalized approach to finding solutions that work. 🌸 Many women experience hair loss due to hormonal changes, stress, and lifestyle factors. 🌸 Personalized medical histories and expert evaluations are crucial for accurate diagnosis. 🌸 Treatments like minoxidil, laser therapy, and PRP can effectively address hair loss. 🌸 Chemical exposure from hair products can contribute to hair thinning. 🌸 Trusting your instincts is important; seek professional advice if you notice significant changes. 🌸 Hair loss is often a symptom of underlying health issues that need to be addressed. 🌸 Starting treatment early can prevent further hair loss and improve outcomes. Breaking Down Bone Health: The Role of Nutrition, Exercise, and REMS Technology (Part 2)
Are you being told your bones are “fine” but still worried about fractures? Have you wondered whether bone density scans actually tell the whole story about your bone health? In this episode of the Hormone Wellness MD Podcast, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by orthopedic surgeon and bone health expert Dr. Andrew Bush to explore how we truly measure bone strength and fracture risk. Together, they explain why focusing on structure, muscle, and prevention—not just numbers—can help you protect your bones long before problems start. 🌸 Bone density does not always equal bone strength, and a “normal” scan does not guarantee low fracture risk. 🌸 Newer tools like fragility scores look at bone structure, not just density, to better predict fractures. 🌸 Bone loss can begin in perimenopause, making early screening and awareness critical. 🌸 Exercise, especially resistance training, is the only proven way to build healthy, physiologic bone. 🌸 Hormones and supplements support bone health but cannot replace the effects of muscle and movement. 🌸 Understanding absolute versus relative risk helps patients make clearer, more informed treatment decisions. If you’re in midlife, navigating menopause, or trying to prevent osteoporosis rather than react to it, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance rooted in real-world medicine. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Breaking Down Bone Health: The Role of Nutrition, Exercise, and REMS Technology (Part 1)
Have you been told your bone density is “normal” but still worry about fractures? Are you confused about whether a DEXA scan really tells you the whole story about your bone health? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Bush to break down bone health in midlife and menopause and explain why traditional bone density testing may fall short. Together, they explore a more accurate, modern approach to understanding fracture risk and protecting your bones long term. 🌸 Many fractures happen in people with “normal” DEXA scans, showing density alone doesn’t tell the full story. 🌸 Bone health reflects overall health, including nutrition, exercise, inflammation, and hormones. 🌸 Muscle strength plays a major role in determining bone strength. 🌸 Arthritis and bone spurs can falsely elevate DEXA results and mask weak bone. 🌸 REMS is a radiation-free ultrasound technology that evaluates bone structure and fragility risk. 🌸 Knowing whether your bones are strong or fragile matters more than focusing on a T-score alone. If you’re a midlife woman trying to prevent fractures, stay active, and make informed health decisions, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical insight to help you take control of your bone health with confidence. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina? Pelvic Health and Menopause: Culturally Competent Care and the Power of Pelvic PT
Are you worried that your menopause symptoms aren’t being taken seriously—or that your experience as a woman of color isn’t reflected in the research? Have you ever wondered why something so “natural” can feel so overwhelming, lonely, and dismissed? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, host Dr. Polly Watson sits down with pelvic floor physical therapist Dr. Bridget Ochuko to unpack how menopause, structural racism, and access to care collide for women in midlife. Together, they show how understanding your body, your risks, and your options can transform menopause from something you silently endure into a stage of life you navigate with knowledge, agency, and support. 🌸 Menopause is a natural process, but that doesn’t mean women should be expected to suffer in silence or accept miserable symptoms as their fate. 🌸 Dr. Watson and Dr. Ochuko explain how most medical research was done on white men, leaving women—especially women of color—without accurate guidance for diagnosis, treatment, and symptom patterns. 🌸 The episode exposes how historical abuses like the Tuskegee syphilis study, Henrietta Lacks’ story, and non-consensual surgeries on enslaved Black women still shape distrust and inequities in gynecologic care today. 🌸 You’ll learn how menopause symptoms can show up differently across races—such as earlier onset, more severe symptoms, and more joint and muscle pain—and why delayed treatment raises long-term risks like high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. 🌸 Dr. Ochuko breaks down what culturally competent care really means, including seeing each patient as a whole person, listening to lived experience, and understanding how race, stress, income, and history affect health. 🌸 The conversation gives women concrete advocacy tools: how to “interview” providers, switch when you’re not being heard, and insist that your symptoms and quality of life are taken seriously. 🌸 You’ll also hear why pelvic floor physical therapy is a powerful, often-missing piece of menopause care—helping with leaking, pain with sex, constipation, and reconnecting you to your body with trauma-informed, patient-led support. If you feel dismissed, confused, or alone in midlife, this conversation reminds you that your symptoms are real, your story matters, and you deserve thorough, respectful care. The Midlife Metabolic Reset: Understanding Cardiometabolic Health in Menopause (Part 2)
Description In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis explore the vital components of cardiometabolic health, with a particular focus on deciphering both basic and advanced lab tests. They cover the nuances of lipid panels, the impact of triglycerides, and the influence of thyroid disease on cardiovascular health. The discussion extends to inflammation markers like C-reactive protein and the critical role of insulin resistance. Delving deeper, they shed light on advanced lipid markers such as APO-B and APO-A1, and the importance of LDL particle size in evaluating cardiovascular risk. This episode underscores the importance of a holistic health strategy for women in midlife to enhance their cardiometabolic well-being. Quotes “Diets high in sugar, saturated fat, or simple carbohydrates, alcohol use, thyroid disease, and inactivity can all raise triglycerides.” - Kate Willis NP-C “High-sensitivity CRP is a general marker for inflammation. Anything causing inflammation, short- or long-term, can raise it.” - Kate Willis NP-C “Fasting insulin around five or less is ideal. Lab normals go much higher, but that doesn’t mean they’re optimal.” - Kate Willis NP-C “If someone's LP(a) is high, that’s their ticket to see a cardiologist—it’s an independent causal factor for cardiovascular disease.” - Dr. Polly Watson “Symptoms of hypothyroidism overlap with perimenopause and menopause… If you’re only treating one spoke of the wheel, what else are we missing?” - Dr. Polly Watson Resources Connect with Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis NP-C Website: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast Resources: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-resources New Patient: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course Instagram: https://instagram.com/hormonewellnessmd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hormonewellnessmd YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG4Tw8oHGR_6wBZmXrTu9xA Disclaimer: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-disclaimer Hashtags #menopauserescue #podcastepisode #podcastrecommendations #hormonereplacementtherapy #medication #perimenopause #womenshealth #menopausesociety #hormonalhealth #midlife #wellness #healthcare #sexualhealth #menopausemanagement

The Midlife Metabolic Reset: Understanding Cardiometabolic Health in Menopause (Part 1)
Are you wondering why your body seems to change during midlife even when your habits haven’t? Do you feel unsure whether your “normal” labs are actually telling the full story of your health? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and nurse practitioner Kate Willis break down how menopause, metabolism, and heart health are connected. Together, they show how understanding your labs, lifestyle, and hormones can help you stay healthier and stronger through midlife. 🌸 Many women experience rising cholesterol and blood pressure in menopause even without changing their diet or exercise. 🌸 Triglycerides can reveal early metabolic problems long before blood sugar becomes abnormal. 🌸 Stress alone can spike blood sugar levels, even without eating any food. 🌸 Alcohol intake as low as eight drinks per week can raise heart disease risk by 45% in midlife women. 🌸 Whole-food proteins, leafy greens, and fiber-rich meals support heart and metabolic health better than processed protein snacks. 🌸 Continuous glucose monitors help women understand how foods, sleep, and stress affect their blood sugar in real time. 🌸 A history of gestational diabetes, PCOS, or early menopause increases long-term cardiovascular risk and should be part of every woman’s health plan. Quotes “If you are someone who’s benefited from antidepressants and they are working well for you, then I absolutely celebrate that.” “When you wean off the medication, your brain has not been reminded how to make serotonin and you can actually have some pretty significant withdrawal symptoms if your brain doesn't have the precursors and the cofactors that it needs to make serotonin.” “I would argue very strongly that [holistic providers] should not de-prescribe anything without communicating with the person who recommended it.” Resources Rebecca Katz Triple Triple Brittle Recipe Connect with Dr. Polly Watson Website: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast Resources: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-resources New Patient: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course Instagram: https://instagram.com/hormonewellnessmd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hormonewellnessmd YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG4Tw8oHGR_6wBZmXrTu9xA Disclaimer: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-disclaimer

The conversation provides practical tips and insights for women to enhance their well-being and navigate health challenges during this transitional phase of life. Strategies to Avoid Burnout with Dr. Lara Salyer
Dr. Lara Salyer, a former burned-out physician turned creativity catalyst, shares her insights on preventing burnout and finding flow in life. She emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and creating space for oneself, especially during life transitions like menopause. Dr. Salyer explains the four phases of the flow cycle (struggle, release, flow, and recovery) and provides tips on how to enhance flow and incorporate recovery into daily life. She also introduces the AHA method for setting goals, which involves anchoring to values, highlighting milestones, and activating flow enhancers. Lastly, she encourages embracing the concept of 'good enough' rather than striving for perfection. Quotes “Burnout happens everywhere, right? Dr. Polly, I mean, it is not just health care, it's firefighters, it's police, it's teachers, it's burned out as a mom, as a spouse, as a friend. I mean, burnout is a term that is the worst because it's sort of the end result of chronic stress and cortisol depletion. And it's awful. We don't want to be in burnout.” “You love being in flow. It feels good. So you don't want to break it, but we have to. We have to pause and recover and unplug and go out and touch grass and do the yoga and the breathing” “We often think of reward as like, okay, let's eat some chocolate. Let's have a glass of wine. And hello. I'm talking to you, menopausal ladies. That's no longer a good reward. Integrative OB GYN's Insights on Hormone Replacement Therapy with Dr. Felice Gersh Part 2
In this conversation, Dr. Felice Gersh discusses the complexities of different formulations of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the benefits of cycling on and off progesterone versus a continuous dose. She emphasizes the importance of considering the whole body when addressing menopause and not waiting until someone is fully menopausal to address the problem. Dr. Gersh also explains the different types of estrogen and their effects on various receptors in the body as well as the benefits of hormone therapy in terms of growth factors, immune system regulation, and cancer prevention. She highlights the need for adequate hormone dosing and the importance of shedding the uterine lining through cyclic progesterone use. Additionally, she discusses the role of lifestyle factors in achieving optimal health as well as the need for informed consent with the use of hormone replacement therapy. Quotes "We're not thinking about menopause as just our periods, right? We're thinking about estrogen and progesterone's effect on our heart, on our brains, on our bones, kind of the whole body." Psychiatrist’s Guide to Reproductive Psychiatry During Menopause - Part 2
Navigating midlife hormonal changes requires personalized mental health strategies. In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson continues her discussion with Dr. Elizabeth Cox, a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in reproductive psychiatry from UNC Chapel Hill. With over a decade of experience, Dr. Cox highlights the critical impact of hormonal changes on women’s mental health during midlife. The episode explores the use of antidepressants for perimenopausal women, focusing on the decision-making process for pharmaceutical intervention, especially when anxiety or mood disruptions affect quality of life. Dr. Cox emphasizes tailoring treatments to each patient’s values and lifestyle goals. Addressing concerns like weight gain and sexual dysfunction, Dr. Cox suggests strategies such as adjusting medication dosages, using supplementary medications like Buspar or Wellbutrin, and exploring topical agents like CBD oil. Open communication between patients and providers is key to managing these side effects. Dr. Cox also discusses the role of genetic testing in personalizing mental health treatments, particularly for those with multiple unsuccessful medication trials or severe side effects. Her approach in reproductive psychiatry emphasizes caution, minimalism, and collaboration, creating a supportive environment for women during hormonal transitions. Quotes “If consistently you’re feeling like your anxiety or your mood symptoms are in the driver’s seat and that you’re in the back seat, just kind of like along for the ride, that feels problematic.” (03:05 | Dr. Elizabeth Cox) “The weight gain typically should be like 5-10 pounds max, more of like water weight. But that being said, everybody’s different. So I’m always open-minded here.” (08:37 | Dr. Elizabeth Cox) “What I feel from this conversation with you is this balance, this gentleness, a lot of choice, a lot of partnership, right? And I think so often women are offered antidepressant medication without a lot of this kind of more nuanced conversation and they feel like they’ve been put off and then they’re closing themselves off to something that might actually be helpful, but they have fear around it, they felt shame around it, they felt judgment around it.” (16:24 | Dr. Polly Watson) Links Connect with Dr. Elizabeth Cox: Website: https://www.resetyourhealthandwellness.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reset_healthandwellness/ Facebook: Reset Health & Wellness, PLLC Connect with Dr. Polly Watson: Website: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast Resources: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-resources New Patient: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course Instagram: https://instagram.com/hormonewellnessmd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hormonewellnessmd YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG4Tw8oHGR_6wBZmXrTu9xA Disclaimer: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast#Disclaimer Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Psychiatrist’s Guide to Mood During Perimenopause & Menopause - Part 1
“We think that different women’s brains have different sensitivities to changes in hormones,” says Dr. Elizabeth Cox. “It’s not so much about absolute levels of hormones that we think are the issue, but the actual fluctuations and changes,” she elaborates. In this episode, Dr. Cox, alongside Dr. Polly Watson, discusses the impact of these hormonal fluctuations on women’s mental health throughout menstruation, postpartum, and menopause. Dr. Cox highlights the importance of identifying women at risk due to heightened sensitivity to these changes and advocates for preventive strategies such as lifestyle changes and therapy. The episode covers Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for alleviating menopausal symptoms, the role of antidepressants, and the importance of cautious medication use. Dr. Watson and Dr. Cox shed light on the vital need for personalized care and encourage women to take active steps in prioritizing their health during the menopausal transition. Quotes “We think that different women’s brains have different sensitivities to changes in hormones. It’s not so much about absolute levels of hormones that we think are the issue, but the actual fluctuations and changes.” (02:18 | Dr. Elizabeth Cox) “I recommend therapy to everyone. I think it can be so nice to be able to process relationships and stressors, changes when you’re nearing that phase of life—like you’re entering a new chapter and there’s a lot to process there too. So adding in some therapy can be another wellness initiative to do.” (09:05 | Dr. Elizabeth Cox) “Some amount of anxiety is good and creates resilience and it’s part of our life and being human. I still want you to be able to feel sad sometimes if something really sad happens or to feel excited. If you feel apathetic and like a zombie and numb, you’re on the wrong medicine or you’re on too high of a dose. But you should still feel like you, but just not as stressed and your bandwidth should feel better.” (18:58 | Dr. Elizabeth Cox) Links Connect with Dr. Elizabeth Cox: Website: https://www.resetyourhealthandwellness.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reset_healthandwellness/ Facebook: Reset Health & Wellness, PLLC Connect with Dr. Polly Watson: Website: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast Resources: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-resources New Patient: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course Instagram: https://instagram.com/hormonewellnessmd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hormonewellnessmd YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG4Tw8oHGR_6wBZmXrTu9xA Disclaimer: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast#Disclaimer Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Pediatrician's Guide to Preparing Parents for the College Transition
“I retired from my pediatric practice to make a broader impact on children's wellness,” says Dr. Hope Seidel, a seasoned pediatrician and parenting coach. “I strongly believe that wellness begins at home,” she asserts. Together with Dr. Polly Watson, they address the challenges parents face as their children transition to college and adulthood, offering insights on fostering independence and resilience in young adults. Dr. Seidel focuses on critical issues affecting adolescent wellness, including the harmful effects of excessive academic and social pressures. She emphasizes the importance of self-efficacy, enabling young adults to tackle their own challenges, and equips them with essential life skills such as handling failure, being financially literate, and setting personal boundaries. Dr. Watson and Dr. Seidel address questions from listeners and provide guidance on managing complex situations like co-parenting with a difficult ex-partner, urging parents to focus on being the healthiest version of oneself so that children can recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy parenting. Dr. Seidel advocates for transparent conversations about college costs and the necessity for children to navigate their educational journeys independently, avoiding parental interference. This episode encourages parents to support their college-aged children by fostering autonomy and carefully considering their own motivations when communicating, to avoid imposing their emotional needs on their children. Quotes “Change your narrative – that being a good parent is defined by other people in your life. We all get to decide what it means for us and we don't want to have our kids be accountable for our feelings of adequacy as parents. It's not their job to make us feel like good parents.” (04:55 | Dr. Hope Seidel) “When it comes to life skills, we grossly underestimate what our kids can do or should do. We pressure them to excel in this kind of hyper-competitive world, thinking that that's the way to success. Frankly, we're teaching them that's the way to success. Then we sometimes don't teach them the basic skills that truly fuel the capacity for self-efficacy. We interfere with their building blocks of feeling self-confident. Self-efficacy is the belief in your ability to complete your own tasks, to reach a goal, to be able to manage your own situations.” (06:54 | Dr. Hope Seidel) “When I really feel sad, I look at my kids' life through their lens, of all that's possible, which is sometimes all that's ending. I can feel so much hope when I can look at it through what they have to look forward to. I would recommend you do that with your kids. Their life is full of possibility and excitement right now. We don't want to steal that from them while we're dealing with our own kind of emotional stuff as we figure this time out.” (49:57 | Dr. Hope Seidel) “Our kids are going to live different lives than ours if we're doing it right. They are going to learn to trust a compass that's their own, not ours. They are going to be exposed to things that they have to figure out how to navigate because we won't always be there. The better we get at providing them with that opportunity, with this soft place to land on the other side, the greater their capacity for success. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Women may spend over a decade of their lives experiencing symptoms around menopause transition, while just over 10% of women’s healthcare professionals feel comfortable treating menopause. The conversation around menopause has evolved beyond hot flashes and night sweats to include how hormonal changes affect bone, brain, mood, heart and mental health. Midlife women can feel like they are drowning in symptoms.
