Ep 54 Burning Out, Burning Through ~ with Rose & Indigo
Burnout, the feeling of complete mental, physical and emotional exhaustion, is often associated with work stress. Yet in our experience it’s all connected - an overwhelming state that impacts every aspect of our lives. Often, we don’t recognise the red flags or early warning signs of burnout and instead try to push ourselves to keep going. We might feel like we’re failing or not coping and try to manage our symptoms rather than addressing the underlying cause… which is often related to being out of alignment with our deeper needs and purpose.Since we’ve both recently been through the experience of burnout, we decided to gather together in person to share our favourite hot cacao and reflect on how we navigated the experience, what we learned from it and how we regained our sense of vitality. If you’re feeling exhausted, flat, foggy, unfocused, lacking in motivation, angry, irritable and as though you have nothing left to give - then this episode is for you. We chat about:What burnout is and how it’s a sign that we’re out of alignment (1:30)Our personal experience of burnout including the signs we ignored, why it’s important to pay attention to our dreams when we’re burnout, what we learned from the experience and what remains when everything is burnt away (5:00)How we can still get burnt out doing things we love, including mothering (27:00)The link between “should” and burnout and the healing power of following your curiosity (30:00)Navigating burnout as a parent (33:00)Embracing burnout as an opportunity to connect with our deeper self and do life differently (39:00)… and so much more!Resources This Jungian Life on BurnoutPsychology Today on Burnout The Reconnected Naked, Covered in Ram’s Blood, Drinking a Coke, and Feeling Pretty Good by Andrew Solomon Thank you for listening. Mini Ep 47: Earth Spot ~ Guided by Indigo
How your Earth Spot will support you..How do you cope when you’re feeling anxious, depressed or overwhelmed? What if there was a place you could go to whenever you needed support or guidance? A place that allows you to experience a feeling of well-being and a connection to a deeper, more sentient wisdom. The good news is that this place does exist and is available to you at any time. It’s called an earth spot and you don’t necessarily need to leave the house to go there. This week, we’d like to share a favourite meditation for nourishing ourselves. An earth spot is a special place (real or imagined) that you feel drawn to and which gives you a sense of well-being, where you feel safe and held. Before completing the following exercise, we recommend you take some time to unwind and connect with yourself more deeply. You might like to take a walk, soak in a relaxing bath or sit quietly and sip a cup of your favourite herbal tea. When you’re ready, grab a pen and your journal or some paper and we’ll begin. What do you know about your birth? Was your mother supported? What was her experience? Our birth stories are also origin stories and they can offer you powerful insights into your life and the stories and patterns you carry with you. Likewise, our experience of giving birth can reveal things about ourselves that were previously hidden. As Jane Hardwicke Collings says, “We have the births we need to have to teach us what we need to know about ourselves, to take us to the next place on our life journey, our journey to wholeness”. This is a huge topic, we’ll explore our own stories as well as the wisdom others bring to this topic. We invite you to pour a cup of tea or a glass of wine and settle in as we explore the topic of birth. We chat about:Our own birth stories and how they reflect the way in which we show up in the worldOur experience of giving birth to our children Birthing creative projectsBirth as a rite of passage that teaches us something we need to know about ourselvesChallenging births And so much more!ResourcesSchool of Shamanic Womancraft Ways to connect with us:Email [email protected] out our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/mothersatmidnight Join us for a Vital Journey! Mini Ep 45: Connecting with your Heart ~ Guided by Indigo
This inner work exercise is adapted from an exercise known as the Freeze Frame from the HeartMath institute. The core of the HeartMath philosophy is that the heart, physically and metaphorically, is the key to tapping into an intelligence that can provide us with fulfilment. Science has shown that the heart communicates with the body and brain on various different levels.Research has found that the heart communicates on a biochemical level, releasing atrial peptide, a hormone that inhibits the release of other stress hormones. Connecting with our hearts reduces stress and provides us with an inner resource we can access at any time. Before completing the following exercise, we recommend you take some time to unwind and connect with yourself more deeply. Mini Ep 43: Meeting our Inner Critic & Vital tip ~ Guided by Indigo
The inner critic usually manifests as an inner voice and is often accompanied by a sense of anxiety, shame, low self-esteem, worthlessness or guilt. The inner critic can act as a “guardian of the threshold”, appearing when we’re at an edge or moving towards something outside of the boundaries of our familiar, everyday identity. The inner critic has all sorts of ideas and opinions about how things should be and about how we should think, feel and behave. We often give the inner critic authority by accepting what it says as truth. How this exercise will support you The following exercise invites you to get curious about the inner critic’s role in your life. We invite you to open to the idea that the inner critic is trying to protect you and has positive intentions. Psychotherapist Matt Licata refers to it as “a protective part in an unhealthy role.” By becoming curious about our Inner Critic, we can learn what it wants for us, and maybe even befriend this part of ourselves. Before completing the following exercise, we recommend you take some time to unwind and connect with yourself more deeply. Mini Ep 41: Releasing Old Habits & Vital tip ~ Guided by Rose
How this exercise will support youWe will be focussing on releasing any habits that aren’t aligned with our intentions. Many spiritual traditions hold the view that self-reflection and awareness of our patterns is the first step in breaking habits that are no longer serving our highest intentions. Rather than thinking of habits as “bad” or “good” we invite you to reflect on which habits are serving you and which are no longer serving you. Before completing the following exercise, we recommend you take some time to unwind and connect with yourself more deeply. Mini Ep 39: Intention Setting & Vital tip ~ Guided by Indigo
We love creating spaces that feel nourishing. During our time together we will be creating a space for exploration of our inner life. Part of this is getting to know what you are seeking. In other words WHY you are here. How this exercise will support youThis exercise will support you to set meaningful intentions for your Vital Journey. Intentions are guiding principles for how we want to feel, behave and show up in the world. Intention setting is different from goal setting, although intentions can support us to achieve our goals. Unlike goals, which express a desired outcome or accomplishment, intentions reflect a greater aim or purpose and allow us to align our actions with our highest truth. Whereas goal setting is more future oriented and directed towards outward achievements, intentions can guide us moment to moment and support us to become clear on how we want to feel and BE in the present. Before completing the following exercise, we recommend you take some time to unwind and connect with yourself more deeply. Ep 38 Gestate to Create ~ Indigo & Rose
In today’s episode we explore the importance of incubation (or gestation) in the creative process. In creating Mothers at Midnight we’ve found that we needed space and time to allow our ideas to form, when we tried to push things along we inevitably ran into more challenges and things just didn’t feel right. Learning to slow down, follow the creative process and allow it to take shape in a way that feels authentic for us has been a big learning curve. We sat down together (well, actually we huddled by the heater with a glass of wine) to reflect on the process of creating a new project and why it’s necessary to embrace periods of gestation in all aspects of our lives. We chat about:Letting go of needing to control the creative processLearning to tune into what feels genuine and authentic and bringing our full selves to the process The link between gestation and how we birth creative projects The gifts and challenges of learning to balance being and doing and why being overly productive can hinder the creative processLetting go of perfectionism and embracing vulnerabilityTuning into the higher self and allowing it to guide the processHow to know its the right time to share our creations with othersWays to connect with us:Email [email protected] out our Patreon pageJoin us for a Vital Journey!Starting February 24th, a Vital Journey is a 12 week online program to support you to transform your health and experience true vitality now and into the future, naturally.A Vital Journey is the creation of Alicia Melrose, a wildly talented and experienced medical herbalist, Indigo’s talented mamma and past podcast guest. Ep 36 Meeting the Dark Mother ~ Indigo & Rose [creators of Mothers at Midnight aka Therapeía]
For our final Season 3 episode we invite you to make a cup of tea or pour a glass of wine and join us - the co-creators of Mothers at Midnight aka Therapeía - for an intimate, vulnerable and sometimes uncomfortable chat about motherhood. This conversation arose out of a desire to speak more openly about the difficult, confronting and challenging aspects of motherhood. We noticed that when these topics start to arise we often find ourselves changing the topic, making light of it or adding how much we love our kids. We feel the pressure to be perfect, to be good mothers, and this requires us to marginalise other parts of who we are. We wanted to drop the facade, set aside the idea of the “good” mother and bring the our wild, messy, and complex selves more fully into the conversation. Our hope is that in speaking to these experiences you too might feel less alone, less pressured and less self-critical in your experience of mothering. Ep 35 Metavision a Soul Calling ~ Christina Nielsen
Today we welcome a very special guest to the show. Christina Nielson is the founder and director of Metavision Institute, a vibrant community for holistic education where we undertook our psychotherapy training (and where the idea for this podcast first began to take shape). The Metavision Institute has grown out of the need to heal the effects of living in a fragmented world. The Metavision ethos is to see the universe as sacred, with laws that govern and connect everything. To see the human being through the lens of eco-spirituality, soul and body awareness and as a part of a sacred universe helps to heal despair, depression, isolation and alienation. Christina has led an extraordinary life and in today’s episode we explore how following her soul’s calling led her to weave her training and practice in Social Work, Chinese Medicine, Anthroposophy and Process Oriented Psychology into a holistic model of counselling and psychotherapy as taught at Metavision today. Through her journey, we’ll explore the deep mysteries of Life and discuss how we can all learn to listen to and follow our own soul’s calling. We chat about:The wisdom of the Prayer of Surrender by Rudolf Steiner and its relevance to our current times (1:30)The incredible story of what prompted Christina to found Metavion (4:00)How to develop awareness of the signals in our life that point towards our soul’s calling (8:00)The universal impulse wanting to come through us all (13:00)How to know if we’re following the right path (14:30)How to navigate the challenges we encounter on our path (16:40)How the threads of our calling are present even in early childhood (22:00)The soul's calling as being deeper than a single goal or purpose (30:00)Working with our biography and Life Myth as a way of making sense of where we’ve come from and where we’re going (35:00)An exercise to support you to apply the lessons and wisdom of today’s topic (42:30)And so much more!Contact ChristinaEpisode ResourcesMetavision Institute The Prayer of Surrender by Rudolf Steiner Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert The Way it Is by William StaffordThe Quantum Mind and Healing by Arnold Mindell THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
