Episode 149 with Debra Brunson , Micro Biologist and Breast cancer Survivor
Debra Brunson, is a 37-year-old breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed almost a year ago and she can see the light at the end of this year (+) worth of treatments. But being a survivor is not all that she is . She is married, with no kids, but she do have four elderly pugs. They live in Jacksonville, Florida and like to spend most of their time time cuddled up on the couch with the dogs, watching movies or TV or reading. She has a PhD in microbiology and immunology ad currently work as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Florida where She studies bacterial pathogens. Having a bit of knowledge on biomedical sciences has really helped her to understand and cope with her diagnosis and treatment. This is the audio from an amazing webinar I did with Lisa Chase PT, Owner and CEO of back to Normal Physical therapy I was so fortunate to be interviewed by her on her Webinar Ask the Experts .I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from the Rosario University in Bogota, Colombia in 1990. I moved to the United States in 1993 and completed a postgraduate Certification in Manual Therapy in 1995 from the University of St. Augustine, became certified in aquatic therapy from the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute. In 2012, I became the team leader for the oncology rehab program at UF Health in Gainesville, Florida, and became a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. I also received a Certification in Cranio-Mandibular Disorders from Mariano Rocabado in 2016. I had been a co-author of publications on the surveillance with the transplant patients and received The Breast Journal Award in 2015. I became APTA board certify oncologist specialist in 2020 . I started taking charge of my cancer podcast for cancer survivors and their families and has been giving a lot of tools in education on my social media. Courtney grew up outside of Hartford, Connecticut, where even early on she developed an interest in horses. She started riding as a child, and as an adult this passion developed into becoming an equine veterinarian. She graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. After graduation she completed an internship at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in New Jersey and then a sports medicine fellowship at MIller and Associates in New York. She left MIller and Associates to start her own practice in Ocala ,Florida, focusing on sport horse health in the area. The practice has grown to three doctors, and Courtney enjoys the opportunity to help her clients and patients as well as trying to compete on her own horse. Despite a welcome increase in menopause awareness in recent years, Dani who has been diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 30’s and was later pushed into surgical menopause, found that support for people with a cancer diagnosis is still woefully lacking. At first, Dani set out to create online support groups but soon realized that this was not enough. Sandy Morgan is a post-doctoral associate in the Smith respiratory physiology lab at the University of Florida. Sandy graduated as a registered nurse from the University of Florida more than 30 years ago. She received her master’s degree in adult neuroscience nursing at the University of South Florida. She worked as a clinical neuroscience nurse specialist in critical care for many years, followed by various nursing leadership roles, before returning to receive her PhD at the University of South Florida. During her PhD program, she successfully developed a home-based respiratory strength training intervention for people with long-COVID and shortness of breath. The data from this study has just been published this month in the journal of Clinical Nursing Research. She is now focusing on developing a respiratory muscle strengthening program for women with breast cancer. Respiratory weakness frequently occurs in the breast cancer population because of breast cancer treatments, as well as the aging process. Deborah Epperson is a recently retired scientist. Deborah worked for most of her career as a Department of Interior biologist, most recently at the U.S. Geological Survey's Wetland and Aquatic Research Center in Gainesville, FL. Prior to that, she spent 14 years working in New Orleans on protected species (marine mammals and sea turtles) issues associated with energy development in the Gulf of America. She obtained her BS and MS from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. from Clemson University. Deborah is learning to embrace her new "retired" life. Unfortunately, part of her new life includes breast cancer. In February of this year, while on a work trip in Louisiana, Deborah got the call no one wants to get: "You have breast cancer." Her cancer diagnosis was all she needed to decide to retire. It has been a journey but she is mending from a double mastectomy and embracing life to the fullest. She enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, her horses, her dog and anything that involves water. Dr Dhruv Singhal, MD is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and serves as the co-Director of the Boston Lymphatic Center and Director of the BIDMC Lymphatic Center. Dr. Singhal completed all of his formal surgical training in Boston. He is Board Certified in GeneralSurgery having completed his general surgery training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston, MA). Dr. Singhal is also Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery having completed further training in plastic surgery in the Harvard Combined Plastic Surgery Program. Oscar W. Goolsby is married with three adult children and two grandsons. In 1999, Mr. Goolsby was licensed and ordained into a non-denominational ecumenical body, New Church of Faith, Inc in Orlando, Florida. He retains his ministerial license. Professionally, he is a retired Registered Nurse with over 32 years of clinical experience andadministrative leadership in the acute care environment. His last duty assignment was an Assistant Chief Nurse with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Goolsby retired May 31, 2023 to focus on his health after having unresolved voice hoarseness. In March 2024, he was diagnosed with stage 3 laryngeal cancer. Mr. Goolsby had a total Laryngectomy done on April 17, 2024at UF Health System, University of Florida, Gainesville. He has undergone multiple medical/surgical treatments and/or interventions to maximize his drastic life modifications. Anamaria Yeung, MD is a Florida native and completed all of her education in Florida. She went to Florida State University for undergraduate studies and received her MD degree at the University of Florida in 2004. She then completed residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida in 2009. She stayed on at UF and joined the faculty in 2009, where she ascended the ranks to become a full Professor of Radiation Oncology, specializing in thoracic and gynecologic cancers. She holds board certification in both Radiation Oncologyand Lifestyle Medicine.During her 15 year career in academic radiation oncology, Dr. Yeung loved being able to walk with patients through the journey of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. It was an honor for her to be a part of this difficult time in her patients’ lives. But after several years of seeing an increasing number of younger and younger cancer patients, she came to the realization that she wanted to start helping patients to prevent cancer rather than treat cancer once it had already taken hold. Over time, she discovered a tremendous amount of scientific data concluding that a large proportion of cancers could beprevented just with lifestyle changes such as eating a whole foods plant-based diet, regular exercise, improving sleep, and reducing chronic stress. This started her on the path toward a career change to Lifestyle Medicine.In 2024 Dr. Yeung, along with her three amazing partners,founded Empower Lifestyle Medicine.
