The Cost of Yes
In this episode of This Ain’t Sunday Morning, the crew breaks down what real biblical obedience looks like and what it means to respond when God speaks. Through the stories of Mary, Joseph, and King Saul, they explore how obedience can require surrender, disrupt your plans, reveal your trust, and shape your purpose. The hosts talk through how to recognize God’s voice, whether through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, or circumstances, and why partial obedience is still disobedience. With honest discussion, real-life scenarios, and the interactive game “Obey or Delay?”, this episode encourages listeners to build a lifestyle of daily obedience, courage, and sensitivity to God’s direction. Don't Be Double Minded
In this episode of This Ain’t Sunday Morning, the crew digs into the real difference between sanctification and double‑mindedness, showing how Christians can be imperfect and still growing, while also warning against the danger of settling into a lifestyle that excuses sin. The conversation breaks down sanctification as a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ, contrasted with double‑mindedness: wanting God and the world at the same time. Through scripture, honest examples, and church‑centered insight, the team explores how confession, grace, accountability, and discipleship shape our spiritual maturity. This episode encourages listeners to embrace progress over perfection while allowing God to confront areas where we’ve become too comfortable. P.S. The Battle You Don't See
In this episode of This Ain’t Sunday Morning, the crew dives into spiritual warfare in a practical, relatable way, showing that it’s not just demons, fear, or dramatic moments, but the daily battles of temptation, conviction, habits, and lifestyle choices that pull us away from God. Using the story of No Malice from Clipse as a modern example, the conversation explores how fame, success, and culture can conflict with faith, how conviction can transform identity, and how God meets us in our struggle to make us new. The episode breaks down what spiritual warfare really looks like, how to recognize when God is tugging at your heart, and what steps to take when you feel called to change. The crew also challenges the church to support, not shame, those who are wrestling and growing, reminding listeners that God can redeem any story. P.S. Through an honest conversation about the habits, mindsets, substances, and behaviors that quietly control us, the team unpacks what addiction really is—psychologically, medically, and spiritually. They explore why we get stuck even when we know better, discuss common modern addictions like phones, approval, and negativity, and walk through practical steps toward freedom through accountability, boundaries, and spiritual disciplines. With biblical wisdom from Romans 6, Galatians 5, James 5, and John 8, the episode reminds us that Christians may struggle, but through Jesus, freedom is possible and real. P.S. Spiritual Not Religious
In today’s episode, we’re exploring a growing trend: identifying as “spiritual but not religious.” What does it mean to seek a connection with something greater than yourself outside the framework of organized religion? And as Christians, how should we view this approach? We dive into the big questions: Is it compatible with Scripture, or does it risk pulling us away from the foundations of our faith? What drives people to reject traditional religious structures in favor of a more personal, unstructured spirituality? Join us as we unpack the complexities of this cultural shift, its implications for believers, and how Christians can respond to this growing perspective. This is a conversation you won’t want to miss! P.S. If you like this episode, we would love to hear your feedback! Make sure to like, comment, and subscribe. Situationships and Open Relationships
In this thought-provoking episode, we tackle the rising trends of polygamy, open relationships, and situationships, all through a biblical lens. Join us as we unpack the controversial ideas promoted by influencers like Kevin Samuels and Andrew Tate, who advocate for high-value men having multiple partners. We also explore Rob Kowalski’s stance on polygyny as a biblical alternative—is there truth to his claims? From the allure of open relationships to the challenges of situationships, we examine whether these modern relationship dynamics truly offer honesty and fulfillment or if they lead to deeper cycles of toxicity. Special guest Rev. Dawn Jones joins us to share her insights on navigating these issues from a faith-based perspective. Don’t miss this candid discussion that challenges societal norms and dives deep into the intersection of relationships, faith, and modern culture! P.S. Patriarchy and Misogyny in the Church
In this episode, we take on the complex and vital topic of misogyny and patriarchy in the Bible. Are these issues truly rooted in Scripture, or are they the result of cultural interpretations? How can we approach these discussions with both faith and understanding? To help us navigate this important conversation, we’re joined by Rev. Jennifer Strayhorn, Minister of Christian Education at West Side Missionary Baptist Church. With her extensive experience in teaching, church leadership, and addressing challenging topics, Rev. Jennifer brings invaluable insights to the table. You may remember Rev. Jennifer from our Women in Ministry episodes—if not, be sure to check them out! Second Chances
In this episode, we’re diving into the topic of second chances and learning from someone who knows a thing or two about them—Jonah. Jonah’s story is a powerful reminder that even when we run from our calling or avoid what’s difficult, God’s patience and grace remain. Together, we explore why people resist their purpose, the lessons we can learn from Jonah’s time in the belly of the fish, and how one person’s second chance can create a ripple effect of transformation, like Jonah’s message to Nineveh. We also discuss how young adults can embrace the concept of second chances in their own lives. Whether you’re facing a new beginning or struggling to find your way, this conversation offers hope, encouragement, and practical insights for walking in God’s purpose. Don’t miss it! P.S. When Faith Disappoints
In this heartfelt episode, we’re joined once again by the beloved Rev. Angela Tate—affectionately known as AP—Associate Pastor of West Side MBC and a licensed professional counselor in Missouri. Back by popular demand, AP brings her unique blend of pastoral wisdom and therapeutic insight to help us navigate a profound and challenging topic: When Faith Disappoints. What happens when God feels silent, prayers seem unanswered, or life’s struggles make us question our faith? Together, we explore the feelings of disappointment that arise when the gap between our expectations of Christianity and our experiences creates “pain points” in our faith journey. Rev. Angie sheds light on the common struggles believers face, offers tools to process doubt and confusion, and answers the tough question: Should we, as Christians, ever question God? This episode offers an honest and compassionate look at wrestling with faith during life’s toughest moments. In this episode, we tackle a challenge many young believers face: the pressure to water down the Gospel. We explore the temptations to soften our stance on Scripture to avoid conflict or rejection and discuss practical examples of how young people might feel swayed to compromise their beliefs. More importantly, we delve into how to balance standing firm in faith while showing love and compassion to those around us. Loving Our Imprisoned Neighbors
In America, mass incarceration has become a defining challenge, with the U.S. leading the world in the number of people behind bars. According to the latest report from the Prison Policy Initiative, nearly 1.9 million people are incarcerated in the U.S., with additional millions on parole or probation. But what does this mean from a faith perspective? As believers, we hold that God’s plan of salvation reaches beyond prison walls, extending to those whom society has often overlooked. Today, we're honored to be joined by a remarkable guest who brings deep insight into this crucial conversation. Rev. Dr. Burton Barr, Jr., a seasoned minister and advocate for prison reform, will share his experiences and perspectives. With a career dedicated to outreach, evangelism, and prison ministry, Rev. Barr has made significant strides in addressing the needs of those in the criminal justice system. He’s also the author of several influential books, including the best-seller "The Hoodlum Preacher," which is being adapted into a film. Loving Our Immigrant Neighbors
Immigration is a divisive issue in our country, often reducing discussions to impersonal debates about borders and numbers. Yet, as believers, we are guided by Scripture on how to treat foreigners. Leviticus 19:34 instructs us, “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” The Law of Moses contains numerous commands about loving, caring for, and including foreigners. To explore how we can better support our immigrant neighbors, we’ve invited Kristen Flores to speak. Kristen Flores, a New Jersey native, moved to St. Louis in 2009 to pursue a Master’s Degree at Covenant Seminary. On her first Sunday at New City Fellowship South, she was introduced to the Firm Foundation Tutoring ministry. Her previous experiences include tutoring during college, supervising a tutoring program, and teaching in Uganda. Kristen saw tutoring as a powerful way to contribute to God’s Kingdom in STL. In 2010, she began working with New City South Children’s Ministry, and by 2012, she transitioned from a volunteer tutor to the Firm Foundation South Coordinator. She became the Director in December 2020. Kristen met her husband Dominic through Firm Foundation, and they have a child named Arabel. P.S. We Are Talking About Divination
In this episode, we are starting the conversation about what we will call “Jesus Plus” faith meaning --new age and divination practices in the body of Christ. Today, many American adults self-identify as Christians, but many Christians also hold what are sometimes characterized as “New Age” beliefs – including belief in reincarnation, astrology, psychics and the presence of spiritual energy in physical objects like mountains or trees. The TASM crew breaks down whether or not Christians should really be engaged in these beliefs and practices. P.S. If you like this episode, we would love to hear your feedback! We Are Talking About Forgiveness
In this episode, we tackle the topic of forgiveness. As Christians we are taught that forgiveness should be a virtue that we practice in our lives. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus teaches that if we forgive those who sin against us, God will forgive us, but if we don’t forgive others God will not forgive our sins. We know that it is a necessary thing to do for believers, but it is often easier said than done. So, the TASM crew wants to encourage you and share how we have navigated forgiveness and what we have learned about it. P.S. If you like this episode, we would love to hear your feedback! Let’s Talk About Music
What's on your playlist? Music is an essential part to every society. Even the Bible is full of music. In the Bible you will find songs of praise, lament, victory, etc. As believers, we know that Philippians 4:8 tell us to dwell on or think about things that are true, noble, right and pure. Even though it was not specifically talking about music, it can definitely be used as a guide on the content of our music preferences. In this episode, the TASM crew talks about the music culture of today, and tackles the question of does it matter what kind of music we listen to regularly. P.S. Let’s Talk About the Promiscuous Phase
Purity culture, today, is labeled as antiquated, unnecessary, and even traumatic for some. As Christians, we believe sex was designed by God to be enjoyed between husband and wife. However, the voices of the culture are promoting a different message, that everyone should experience sex before marriage and even have a “promiscuous phase.” In this episode, the TASM crew shares their thoughts on this provocative topic. Let’s Talk About Deconstruction
In this episode, the TASM crew dives into the complexities of faith deconstruction, a popular term in modern Christianity. It is defined as the breaking down or analyzing of one's faith practices and beliefs to determine their truthfulness. When one deconstructs their faith, they are seeking to understand why they believe what they believe, or in some cases determine if they really believe at all. The Sex and Pornography Episode
God created sex and created us as sexual beings. However, being a sexual being is not synonymous with being sexually active. Dawn Jones is a licensed counselor, life coach, and conference speaker from St. Louis, MO. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Trauma Studies Certificate from the University of Missouri – St. Louis and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO. The Church Hurt Episode
The Church Hurt Episode One of the roles of the church is to edify and uplift its people, however, church hurt is a common occurrence. The TASM crew wanted to address this with the hope of healing. In today's episode, we are joined by West Side's own Donise McNichols, who helps us discuss this topic by sharing her own journey with past church hurt. As she reflects on her experience and the lessons learned, she tells us that she is now in a deeper relationship with the Lord and believes she has healed from it. We hope that sharing Donise’s story and the four steps of healing church hurt from Dr. Alison Cook will be an assistance and guide for anyone who is still currently navigating hurt by the church. However, before we get into the discussion we start with our popular segment, Church Gone Viral, featuring a very funny and relatable video from @NotKarltonBanks. P.S. The Celibacy Episode
The Celibacy Episode To wait or not to wait for marriage to have sex is usually a question believers know the answer to. We should wait. God intended sex for marriage. However, the question that a lot of believers ask is, how? How do we go about this journey especially in this current culture that is super sexual. In today’s episode we discuss that answer as we introduce a new segment to the podcast called Church Gone Viral as it features @justwhiti comedic view on this very topic. We are also joined by West Side’s very own Nia Hodges who has committed to be celibate before marriage. Through conversation, we discover that your why is just as if not more important than the how. Nia Hodges is a first-year master’s student at WashU studying data analytics and statistics. She has a B.S. in computer science from Jackson State University and believes that God is preparing her to be an agent of change in her community through STEM. Nia joined West Side in August of 2022 when she moved to St. Louis for school. She volunteers in the media ministry, ministers through the dance ministry, and participates in the young adult ministry. P.S. If you like this episode, we'd love to hear your feedback! The Mental Health Episode 2023
The Mental Health Episode Faith and mental health are not contradictory ideas, but rather complementary. So we ask, what is the role of the Church in mental health? In today's episode, we aim to reduce the stigma of mental health in the church by talking about it to bring awareness. We invited our Associate Pastor, Rev. Angela Tate to join the discussion and she answered our questions about how we connect mental health and faith, and how we as a church meet the need of mental health issues especially among young people. Reverend Angela M. Tate is a lifelong resident of St. Louis Missouri. She was licensed to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 2006 and ordained in 2011 through West Side Missionary Baptist Church here in St. Louis. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Maryville University and her Masters of Education in Counseling from University of Missouri-St Louis. Angela is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the State of Missouri and has over 20-years of experience in non-profit leadership including most recently at Behavioral Health Response (BHR) where she served as Vice President of Operations. In this episode the TASM crew takes on this topic as the recently legalized recreational use of marijuana in Missouri has brought this issue to the forefront.
