Gen Z's love of the past

Today's youth are reinventing what it means to be cool. A surprising number of Gen Zers are actively looking to the past. They are choosing to romanticise old-school tech relics like CDs, wired headphones, and weighty digital cameras. This love for all things vintage extends into their wardrobes with a massive resurgence of Y2K (year 2000) fashion. Friday nights are increasingly filled with board games and classic card games. So why exactly is the most digitally advanced generation trying so hard to rewind? The answer lies in a desire to slow down and find comfort. Growing up as digital natives has its perks, but Profectus Magazine reveals that around 80% of Gen Z adults worry their generation is far too dependent on technology, while three-quarters feel social media is affecting their mental health. Swapping music streaming for physical CDs or endless social media scrolling for a tactile board game allows them to unplug and step away from the digital noise. This analogue revival could actually be good for everyone. Research by psychologist Dr. Clay Routledge shows that engaging with nostalgic media and traditions can dramatically boost positive moods, reduce anxiety and help people cope with daily stress. It suggests that nostalgia can act as a stabilising, hopeful force, helping a young generation build social confidence. Research by psychologist Dr. Clay Routledge shows that engaging with nostalgic media and traditions can dramatically boost positive moods, reduce anxiety and help people cope with daily stress. Yet, all of this begs a fascinating question – can a generation truly yearn for a life they never actually lived? Studies published in Profectus Magazine show that nearly 70% of Gen Z adults experience a unique kind of historical nostalgia for eras that predated their own birth. GWI, a global market research company, reports that young people are looking back at the past through rose-tinted glasses, viewing it as a time of genuine human interaction. Though there have been mixed reactions from millennials, ultimately, Gen Z's obsession with the past suggests that no matter how advanced our gadgets get, human beings may always desire a simpler way of living. For a generation that grew up entirely online, going vintage isn't just a fashion statement, it's a total vibe.

A major art exhibition exploring the achievement

A major new exhibition in the heart of Washington celebrates the artistic achievements, of Native American women with more than 80 works of art. Parts of our people, Native women artists is the first exhibit of its kind, says Anya Montiel, curatorof American and Native American Women's Art and Crafts, at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. There have been other exhibitions in the past that have featured only Native women artists. But those exhibitions tended to future contemporary art. So the curators of this show, they wanted to make sure that this exhibition is comprehensive, in the timespan as well as including many different artistic mediums as possible. Those mediums range from paintings, textiles and sculptures to baskets and even wearable art. The exhibit explores three central themes: legacy, relationship and power. Legacy is really talking about continuum. A lot of these artists have learned these traditions from their ancestors. Adorned with teeth from hunted elk, it took many years to gather enough to decorate a single dress. So you have this dress that is put together by the women of the family, but with this beautiful decoration, that really shows the legacy of the entire family. The theme of relationship represents the connection between humans and the earth. This one is called Wisdom of the Universe by Christi Belcourt. And it looks like beadwork, but it's actually all painting in acrylic. And upon closer inspection, the insects the birds and the plants are actually endangered species, and so it's really presenting to us what are we going to do about this. The theme of power speaks to the authority of Native women within their nations. Especially for the Muscogee Creek, they are matrilineal nation. The women were the ones who made the decisions, especially about whether or not they were going to go to war. Visitors did the exhibit had an emotional response. The last piece I was just looking at how to scar from shoulder to her hip, and the trauma of the culture that has been really traumatized by another was extremely impactful. One over there with the girl and the scar in the back that was really powerful. I don't know. It's just like, I wanted to cry when I saw it. And that's the point of this exhibit, expose people to the variety of artwork created by Native American women, who may never have received the credit they deserve. This exhibition has so many testaments of these women saying that, despite everything that's happened to Native women, the cultures and the traditions are still so strong. This touring exhibit remains in Washington until May.

Climate change survivors – Coral reefs

So far, this thriving and unique coral reef in Red Sea waters off Egypt is a climate change survivor. While warmer waters bleach reefs everywhere, the ecosystem in the Gulf of Aqaba stands strong, and may hold the key to receding other reefs if it can survive the crowds of tourists. Obviously we're in a tourist town. So it's very important with this influx of humans to keep awareness high, and you know most of town relies on the dive industry. Amy Johnson co-founded the citizen science venture project Azraq. The marine conservation group educates local communities on how to protect coral reef ecosystems. Basically we collect data on fish, invertebrates, coral and coral diseases. All the data we collect gives us an insight into the health of the reef. So that chosen the species, we want to chose some specifically, because that indicates the reef health. On this day, the team dives to perform a monthly reef monitoring survey. To conduct their research, the team places a six-meter-long line, and then logs all nearby inhabitants that indicate a healthy ecosystem. Project Azraq co-founder Nour El Sawy: One of the things we look for are damselfish. They are very small and reef associated which means they live in close proximity to the coral reef. They eat the algae. They are farmers. They make sure corals are cleans canbreatheand are not suffocating from algae growth. Tourism draws divers to this coral reef which forms the backbone of the economy into hub. But the industry also adds to the junk piling up on the ocean floor. Team project Azraq has a dive against debris initiative where they collect and sort underwater trash, which they then enter into a database, that tells them which items caused the most damage in their area.

From Farm to Table: Blockchain Technology Will Bring Transformation

In a fantasy world, a celebrity chef like Aaron Sanchez would prepare all of your meals, and use only sustainably sourced organic produce. Reality is everyone has to shop for and prepare our own food at some point. How can you be sure that you're getting the best ingredients? That those organic vegetables are in fact organic. IBM thinks the solution lies in blockchain technology. IBM is connecting the world's food supply from farmer to producer, supplier to manufacturer.IBM正在将全球食品供应链从农民到生产商、从供应商到制造商连接起来。And so we're connecting it in a secure, shared platform which is blockchain. A blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger, where transactions are recorded, verified and become permanent and immutable. With IBM Food Trust, a record of food's journey through the supply chain is created at each step. How exactly does it work? So blockchain uses cryptography and we use hashing. And what that means is the information is connected to each other, and if you try to change the information, it changes the hashing, so that you know it has been compromised. And the technology can be used for any number of foods, fresh or packaged. So our consumer can scan a package of scallops, and understand that it's coming from a place that sustainably source, and it is fresh and the best-tasting scallops. For chefs like Sanchez, blockchain technology helps engender trust around the food distribution and handling process. Before I mean you know the farmer would send it to a middle person, a distributor, and the distributor would send it to us, so it was one entity removed from the actual farmer. A foods traceability becomes especially pertinent in the wake of foodborne outbreaks. You know, instead of decimating the whole farm because there was one outbreak, now we can isolate to that one little parcel. With blockchain, farm-to-table takes on a new meaning.

Adaptive fashion products

Welsh born designer Lucy Jones says she's been interested in fashion since she was a child, starting when her parents gave her a sewing machine. When I was 19 years old, I was really feisty, fiery, brave. I thought moving all the way to New York from Wales, where there are more sheep than people. I wanted to be the next big designer that was gonna have these glamorous runway shows. I was never thinking about disability. I was never thinking about, you know, underserved people. And then something changed. With most of the fashion industry serving the average healthy person, Jones didn't want to become just one of many. She wanted to be special. I started talking with a family member who has cerebral palsy. And he said wouldn't it be great if things were more accessible, you know, doing up a pair of shoes independently and things I had never thought about. So Jones began to think about how a fashion designer can make the lives of disabled people easier and more beautiful. She raised this question with people she knew or found through social media, one of them Brianna Scalesse who models Jones's clothes, recalls the first time she saw the product. We were in a cafe and we were sitting down, and she just like pulled the product out of a bag to show me. And it was emotional for me, because I've been so used to growing up and being a person with a disability, kind of being ignored by the world and by fashion. The release of her first collection in 2015, coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. And her work was noticed. Jones started with accessories that she presented at a special event. A challenge many wheelchair-bound people face is, there is nowhere to put a hot drink as they wheel. So she designed a special cup holder and a purse holder. Just regular purses, you know, like trying to like just throw it over your shoulder, and every time I'm rolling, it's just falling down, like into my chair. And after that event, a number of people from the audience, ambassadors just said, I want to invest. Her products quickly became a huge success.

Women can also work in the construction industry

A nine-to-five office job isn't for these women. Instead, they work construction and they do it for the same reasons the men do, because they find construction work more fulfilling. Being able to see the bigger picture, being a part of something bigger, so driving by the building be like,建筑行业能够让我看到更宏大的愿景,成为更伟大事业的一部分,有时路过某栋建筑,我就会想,I built that building to your family, or to your kids in the future, that's kind of why I did it, just to be a part of something bigger. Before they start working, these women taken mandatory training course at a special center. And many of them say it teaches them not just to construct buildings, but also build a harmonious relationship with themselves. I think it's for me, personally, it's a constant battle on gaining confidence, but this job has definitely helped it. I don't think I would be as confident as I am now working in another field. Today women make up about 10 percent of all construction workers in the country. All the workers need are a few tools, a helmet, special protective glasses, training, and self-confidence. Kelly Kupcak has been working in construction for over two decades. For the last three years, she has been head of the Tradeswomen organization, a company that has been helping women in Portland Oregon, to master construction work for free. Kupcak also helps them find a job, something a lot of them need because it's harder for women to break into the business. I also saw some really hard things, and I experienced some really hard things as a woman, in an industry that still dominated by men, and an industry which I think is changing. But back then, it was still largely this very macho like, why are you here, why are you here taking my job,但在当时,这一行业很大程度上仍然是属于男人的,人们会质问:你为什么要来这里?为什么要抢走我的工作?why are you here taking a job from another man who has to feed his family, and I was like, I have to feed my family too. So that was a big eye-opening experience for me firsthand.

Move the statue

I was watching the world news of all these statues coming down and all this national attention to these iconic figures of history and what they represent and the energy and power that it generated through Black Lives Matter. People who are angry, people who are vandalizing and getting out all this anger and frustration of all these generations of all colors. I called my tribal group. I sent them emails, "Look, something needs to happen here." Father Serra was the man who came in, in the 1700s, to start establishing those missions all along Alta California. Here we were the workforce. We were the ones that, my family, my direct family, my great grandfather was part of that mission system, that mission period. They were told, "You're going build this for us and you're going to change your way of life." And the punishment for disobeying was physical punishment. As time went on and more people kept coming in, the diseases came in. That was a very detrimental time for us. It changed us completely and, in fact, left us to the point of near extinction. People are arguing that he isn't responsible for the cruelties and punishments and rape and genocide. But he was knowledgeable and as an iconic figure of that time period, he represents all of that. So, everything you see here as you look around, know that it was all Chumash land at one time and occupied for thousands and thousands of years with each village being separated from one another. We want the city of Ventura to remove the statue. This statue representing the city, it really shouldn't. It should represent Catholicism and love of Jesus Christ in God in a proper setting. The aftermath of after he died and after sacralization, people were not set free. They were in a sense, but they were still subservient to the next generation of people coming in, the pioneers. And then, you know, even today, we're still looked at and we face that prejudice and racism all my life. That, well, unless I look like you, otherwise I'm called the N-word, growing up. Good to see you, Father Tom. I came to you first because this is the symbol of your devotion and the community, of the Catholic community that's here. It belongs to all of you. One thing that our church and society has failed to do is to give properrecognitionand reconciliation. But it's your land and your ancestors built that mission. And you informed me of a call for a protest to take the statue down. And from that, we came up with a joint statement to say that we feel that it's probably time to relocate the statue. But we want to do it with due process, with non-violence, something that can be replicated in other communities for respect and actually become a model because we could see what was happening in the nation. Some people thought it was a great thing we signed that document. Other people thought it was the worst thing we should have done. So, we can't please all the people. The way that we want to see it, it would be the first time that City and Church and Indigenous Peoples have come together in this place. But ultimately it is the City of Ventura's Council that will ultimately make the decision to remove the statue.

The impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans

It's the slave man talented. That's the problem. That's the heart of the problem. We are inclined to do the things that we do because we don't feel like there's anything else we can do. According to the documentary, Hurricane Katrina, which struck New Orleans 15 years ago, exacerbated crime and violence in the city by destroying the local economy and displacing some 400,000 residents. It changed the dynamics of the city. It changed the neighborhoods. Whole neighborhoods were washed out. And as people came trickling in, you know, they had lost their homes, they'd lost everything. Post-Katrina destruction, displacement and crime in New Orleans is also the theme of the feature film drama, RZA's Cut Throat City. The film starts on a positive note with Blink, one of the main characters, a graphic novel artist dreaming for a better life. But then Katrina strikes the Lower Ninth Ward, a low-income district and upends the life of Blink and his community. Unable to get a job or get help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, he turns to crime. One heist leads to another, making it harder and harder for Blink to get out of a hopeless situation,一个接一个的抢劫,让布林克越来越难以摆脱绝望的处境。Hopelessness during post-Katrina New Orleans is RZA's theme. The film also describes how corruption has been plaguing the city for generations. RZA's Cut Throat City appears to be a place where dreams of poverty-stricken African-Americans come to die.《夺命城》似乎是贫困的非洲裔美国人梦想破灭的地方。Still, the filmmaker says his film ends with the redemptive note that people have the power to turn their lives around. The lotus flower grows out of mud. Okay, the community could be mud, but a flower could grow out of it. I think everyone deserves a second chance or at least should have the option. Katrina's always been with us, set a bunch of different names.

Refugees from Turkey expelled in Greek waters

Since this past February, VOA has talked toscores ofrefugees in Turkey who have tried and failed to get into Greece. Back then, the Turkish government was openly encouraging them to make the trip. But the Greek government has told them not to come and many refugees report being beaten, robbed, and then expelled after they arrived. In recent months, the stories have grown even more harrowing. Families tell of being abandoned at sea by Greek authorities on rubber boats without motors or fuel. They dragged our rubber boat to water that seemed to be hidden by mountains and circled around us until we were bailing water out with our own hands. I thought the children would drown. Najma and her family were on their third attempt to reach Greece when their boat was stopped and their fuel was seized by what appeared to be Greek security forces. But they were lucky. A passenger had enough fuel hidden away to get them back to Turkey. When they caught our boat, I woke up as we were dragged back into Turkish waters. I wasn't scared until I thought they were going to rip open our boat with pikes. On a previous trip, they made it to the Greek islands. But they were soon arrested and left on rafts at sea before they were rescued by the Turkish coast guard. The New York Times recently reported Greece has secretly expelled more than 1,000 people in recent months, abandoning many of them at sea outside of Greek territorial waters.《纽约时报》最近报道称,希腊近几个月来已秘密驱逐了1000多人,还将其中许多人遗弃在希腊领海之外的海域。But Greece has denied any illegal activity, noting that it has rescued tens of thousands of asylum seekers in recent years. The government adds it protects European Union borders vigorously with tough but fair policies.

First dinosaur bone from Antarctica found in a drawer

The ten-centimetre-wide fossil was unearthed during an expedition to James Ross Island four decades ago. Its discovery was recorded in a field notebook with a tiny sketch of the fossil and a note saying vertebra from a large reptile. But that was as far as the identification went, until the fossil was spotted amongst the thousands of specimens stored at the British Antarctic Survey. Its distinctive shape revealed it was part of the tail of a titanosaur, the largest dinosaurs ever toroamthe Earth. It dates to 82 million years ago, when Antarctica was very different to how it is today. It would have been covered inlushforest, providing ample food for this four-legged, long-necked dinosaur.

How to cope with disappointment

We've all been there. Ending up with a worse exam result than you had hoped for or expected, a friend cancelling a plan you were really looking forward to, or your favourite sports team losing a game. Disappointment is an unhappy feeling when there is a gap between your expectations and reality, when something you desired failed to materialise. It's a normal and natural reaction, but what to do? Is it best to forget about it and move on, or allow yourself to feel the feels? We often can't control what happens in life, but we can control how we respond when things don't go our way. Dr Radha Modgil, a UK family doctor and campaigner for wellbeing, says that we should take time to process the disappointment. "We can often feel the need to move on straight away or ignore our feelings, but if we take time to process them and talk them through, we can move forward in a healthier way," she says. Next, she advises us to see the opportunities. Things may not have worked out this time, but when one door closes, a different, more exciting door may have opened, in a way that may one day make you grateful for the initial disappointment. The wider the gap between expectations and reality, the greater the disappointment. Make sure your goals are realistic, not idealistic, says Dr Annette Clancy, an organisational consultant who researches emotions in the workplace. Think about what a realistic result would be, rather than the perfect one. When waiting for something significant like a job offer or test result, her advice is to not get ahead of yourself. When we anticipate a positive result, we often start imagining a future that doesn't yet exist, and if that future doesn't materialise, we then have togrieveits loss, which can be upsetting. Try not to take it personally. Disappointment might make you think, "I'm not good enough," and lead you to blame yourself, affecting your self-esteem. It may cause you to blame others, making you angry that they did not recognise your value. Dr Annette Clancy says both reactions miss the point. Instead, see disappointment as a signal that our expectations and reality are not aligned. Understanding this, she says, can be an important way to develop resilience.

Robotic police help reduce policing burdens

This is an autonomous robot. It operates essentially on its own. It's on a program. Well, it's extremely useful because it frees up our officers to concentrate on, you know, other important community policing matters. It is a live monitoring system, so we are able to monitor the cameras live at the communications center. These are the four cameras that are positioned within the unit and it's always recording. So, everywhere it goes, it's capturing all of that data. It also has a license plate reader feature which operates by this device right here. It's able to read license plates of vehicles in parking lots and it actually captures that data. It also has a distress button which is located here. So, somebody were to need assistance or they want to contact our communication center, they can do it by way of that distress button. And there's people that are monitoring on the other end. So, the system also has the ability for a dispatcher or a monitor to get into the software and actually project communication through the robot to the person that has pressed the distress button. If something wrong happens, the police can see it from the robot. And then the police can come and figure out what's happening to us. We saw the autonomous robot in one of the conferences and we decided it might be something that could work for the parks as we've been having some concerns about safety. This park is the largest park in the city and it's highly used by the community, especially now during the summer. So, we wanted an extra set of eyes that would help the police department in order to patrol it 24/7. It travels the entire park. It is a programmed path but we're able to change the path and adapt it to, maybe, different activities that we become aware of. So, there's a person coming in. If it senses it too close, it'll stop for a moment. Good morning. All of this information is recorded. It's downloaded to a hard drive. If something were to happen and we needed to go back to look at the video recording, we can always access that video also. Cost is around $65,000 a year. We already use different funds in order to cover it. And like I said, it's a year-on-year basis. So, if we decide to renew it, it will come back to the council so we can vote on it.

Healthy snack bars are replacing unhealthy habits.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics of the United States, roughly 37 percent of US adults consume fast food on a daily basis. The center found a significant rise in the number of severe obesity cases in very young children aged 2 to 5. Thank you so much for having us here in your home. Zobaida Falah on Ohio-based Muslim entrepreneur launched her snack bar company called Cure in June 2016,俄亥俄州的穆斯林企业家佐贝达·法拉于2016年6月推出了她的零食棒公司Cure,in an effort to end unhealthy food habits and raise awareness about proper nutrition and its benefits. To fight obesity and junk food habits, Falah created a line of organic healthy bars for all. The idea came to her when she was teaching math and English to kids. I would watch my students to come into the classroom, eating chips and soda, refined sugars, bad carbs. And anytime I asked them why do you guys eat so poorly, a very common response was healthy food just doesn't taste good. With taste in her mind, Paula started experimenting on a unique recipe inspired by her grandmother. Ingredients include a mixture of nuts, flavorful seeds, honey and black seeds. It took off, but to this day, she still runs her business from home, meeting roughly four to six thousand orders a month. Falah doesn't just want to change people's health but also tackle hunger as she donates a snack bar to the homeless for each one sold. We have a social movement and mission behind the company, which means that when we first launched we would donate a bar for every bar that we sold, when we would donate it to people experiencing homelessness. And as the company has grown and we've expanded and added new product lines to our brand, now we actually donate a percentage of all of our profits towards alleviating world hunger. Falah says her company has helped more than 200,000 poor people in the U.S. and abroad, including refugees in Syria, Morocco, Palestine, and Gambia.

Should the wreckage of the Titanic be salvaged?

On the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean rests one of history's most fantastic failures, the unsinkable RMS Titanic. The salvage firm RMS Titanic Incorporated has so far recovered more than 5,000 pieces of dinnerware and coins from the wreckage. They say after all these years underwater, time is running out to dredge the Marconi wireless telegraph machine that transmitted the Titanic's frantic distress calls. RMS Titanic Incorporated's presidents Bretton Hunchak: The roof has degraded significantly and the wreck is essentially collapsing in upon itself.RMS Titanic Incorporated的总裁布雷顿·汉查克:其船顶已经严重退化,残骸也正在不断坍塌。So we're at a point where the Marconi is really in a detrimental area, where we believe in a short period of time, it will fall in upon itself, leaving the Marconi sort of to be lost to the seafloor. At the time the Titanic was the world's biggest ship. The luxury ocean liner set sail from London to New York, but struck an iceberg on April 14th,1912. The ship sent distress signals in Morse code using the relatively new Marconi wireless Telegraph. Less than three hours later, it's sank. Only 700 of the more than 2,000 people on board survived. The Marconi is sort of I believe this generation's next step, and I believe that bringing a tangible part of Titanic to the masses, as opposed to just a few people they get to go see it, really makes that story real for them. It's a human interest piece. It's an incredible piece of technology especially for its day. And it's the reason that I think the legacy of Titanic still exists in the strength that it does. But outside of the Titanic Belfast Museum, not everyone shares Hunchak's quest to raise the Titanic or even parts of it, fearing the stress of extraction on the sunken ship. Parliamentarian Gavin Robinson: We will learn nothing new. There are other Marconi videos just exactly the same, that are present and in other museums available throughout the world. You can learn and understand without the need to go in and wreck and destroy. Engineers built Titanic and it's tendered the SS Nomadic in Belfast. Today of battle wages in the United States, where the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration argues in court that,如今基于打捞工作展开了争论, 美国国家海洋和大气管理局在法庭上辩称,the retrieval run goes against previous court orders prohibiting the removal of anything from the ship itself.

The Art of Upcycling

It is a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging reuse in our community, providing affordable materials to artists and teachers and all creative minds in the area. I learned about creative reuse centers over a decade ago, and they really sparked something in me,我在十多年前就了解了创造性再利用中心,它们真的激发了我的灵感,because I'd always been a creative reuse artist, but I didn't know there was a name for it really and there was a community for it. When I was a lot younger, one of the first inspirations I had was someone was throwing away this baking tin. And I was like, don't throw that away, I could do something with that. I didn't know what, but we drilled a hole in the middle and turned it into a clock. I called it my cupcake clock. I like to do a lot of CD mosaics. I did a series of all the local colleges that people seem to really like, and it's on an old like pantry door that got discarded. And I also make tiny little earrings out of paper like maps, music paper, old books, things like that. We are just outside of Leesburg, Virginia, which is kind of the keystone of Loudoun County. And it is a wonderful community that embraces arts and small businesses. Donations come in very willingly, all kinds of things, fabrics, sewing notions, paper, office supplies, lots of creative things that kids like to use like pompoms and buttons and pipe cleaners. All kinds of materials that might otherwise go to the waste, we take in and we try to find a new home for them. Our center attracts a wide range of people, ages and coming for all types of reasons. Alright Sonya, so what have you made today? I made a house like with flowers and apples and cookies. Is that where the house would go? Yes, but it is a little big.

Water pollution-induced health crisis

The World Health Organization says unclean water, poor hygiene, and bad sanitation are linked to four percent of deaths in the world, and six percent of debilitating illnesses including cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. Many charities are helping, including one group of volunteers based in California. This is one of the drill bits. It's about four inches. This is a clay cutter. Employing local drillers water wells for Africa has dug 230 wells in villages in Malawi, a landlocked country in Southeast Africa. The group has identified 30 other sites for future wells. Dahlan was working for a faith-based organization in 1994, when he saw how rural Africans got their water.1994年,达岚正在为一个以信仰为基础的组织工作,当时他看到了非洲农村人口是如何获得水的。Even if you have, you know, a local river nearby, it's polluted by wild animals, livestock. They wash in it, they drink it, they bathe in it, you know, it's their only point of water, so every open water source is contaminated. Malawi is one of Africa's poorest nations. But Dahlan says its people are known as warm-hearted. In fact, their slogan is we're the warm heart of Africa. And they really live up to that. We found the most hospitable people you can imagine. He says local people form committees to keep the wells operating, a crucial component for each community plan. So we get five key leaders, male leaders and five female leaders, you know, for not only equality purposes,我们选出五位关键领导人,五位男性领导人和五位女性领导人,这不仅是出于平等的目的,but we all know the power of women, and they're the primary water collectors, so this thing breaks down, they're gonna make sure that it gets fixed. He says after more than 20 years, most of the earliest wells still work. Dahlan's group is one of many organizations providing clean water to local communities, addressing the world's other major health crisis.

The appearance and taste of food

I tend to think of myself as pretty quiet and shy. I like to think I have a good amount of confidence but I kind of keep it reserved. I eat lots and lots of fruits and vegetables. As you can imagine, I waste very, very little in my household, and I really believe that clean eating is a way to a more successful life, or a happier life if you want to put it that way. You start the day with a healthy meal, I guarantee you're going to feel better throughout that day and throughout that week. You'll be more motivated to do better in school, to get a better job, to maybe go workout or be more successful. And so it's really unfortunate that our food system is set up so: calories are cheap, but the nutrition is expensive. We're looking to change the face of produce to make it really accessible, really affordable for people that really need it. So if you walk down a grocery store aisle and you see perfect looking apple, perfect looking apple, perfect looking apple, imperfect looking apple,如果你在杂货店看到完美无瑕的苹果,也有外观有瑕疵的苹果,meaning it's too big or too small or it has a bruise on it, you wouldn't choose it in a grocery store, and that would get thrown away, right? We use the perception of, it's not what it looks like, it's what it tastes like. And even the ugly stuff tastes even better than the stuff you would find in a grocery store, because it's not processed, it doesn't have wax on it. It's straight out of the grounds, right? So it's even fresher and it tastes even better than the stuff you find in a grocery store. So our company is called Hungry Harvest. We have three different options. We have an organic, we have a recovered box, and we have an all fruit option. We sell produce with purpose. We hire people that were formerly in prison. We've hired people that were formerly injured or were sick, that are living in homeless shelters that were really looking to get back on their feet, and for a second chance in life.

Virtual reality cloud vacationing

It is a trip to the spa unlike anything Remy Meraz has experienced. It was really like I was on vacation. Meraz picks a location she wants to experience. Then she gets geared up with a virtual reality headset. She has the massage chair adjusted to her size and intensity preference, and sinks in for a virtual vacation. And an immersive multi-sensory experience begins. A fan, infrared heat, and aromatherapy with scents in the air are all triggered, when the user enters the virtual world in their headset. Your mind processes the sense, it processes the warmth, it processes for, you know, the tropical treat, the wind from the fans, and so you really believe you're in these environments. The heat lamp gives users the feeling of the Sun's warmth on their face, or in front of a cozy fireplace. In addition to this cabin on a cold winter's day, other experiences include a calm pool in Morocco, and even an outerspace experience. Meraz chose a trip to the forest waterfalls. I could smell the aroma of what it would feel like in a forest. It was, you know, woodsy sense. I could feel cool air blowing on me. These virtual locations still do not look quite like video of a real place. And for some users, the headset does make it tough to get a good neck massage. But for Meraz, she got the ultimate proof of relaxation. There are three different points where I almost fell asleep. Currently the 35-dollar mini vacation is only available in Los Angeles. The goal is to license this virtual experience to other cities, so hotels, spas, and offices can give people a quick escape from the stresses of the real world.

This is in Cambodia when kids are seeing water come out of the ground for the first time in their lives. Also in Cambodia. This is in Indonesia where women who were watching their kids suffer from malnutrition. These are salt workers which is one of the toughest jobs and it mostly is done by young girls and women. And I was with them, you know, with a health organization because the salt takes a terrible toll on their little bodies. Annie Griffiths has thousands of photographs she has taken all around the world, one of the first female photographers at the famous national Geographic magazine. In the span of 45 years, she has traveled to over 150 countries and all seven continents. I've always felt that being a woman was an advantage in my job, both initially getting into photo journalism, and then recognizing that I had half the world pretty much to myself. I spent about five years doing projects in the Middle East, and many parts of the Middle East and many aspects of their culture are gender separate. I think that is judged often by the western world, but there again is an opportunity to actually look at it from the women's point of view. The women caught by Griffiths' camera survived natural disasters and migrations, discrimination, war, epidemics and famine. But she says despite it all, they keep the traditions alive, raise children, grieveand just leave. So the stories I focus on are where women have found solutions. It's usually because they come together as a group, and as a group they figure out how to do something better. They're the ones planting millions of trees. They're the ones who are you know staying till the last minute after the men leave, and then shepherding their children and sometimes their parents. She believes women don't like being victims, and remain hopeful in the grimmest of circumstances. And that was the reason why Griffiths decided to found the charity projectRippleEffect Images that founds programs for women in developing countries. The idea came to her nine years ago when Griffiths saw the data from the United States Agency for International Development on humanitarian aid. Two cents out of every American aid dollar went to programs for women, so 98 went to men's programs. So I literally called my girl friends who are some of the best photographers in the world, and said, "Look, why don't we learn from the women we observe in the wider world?"我打电话给我那些身为世界顶级摄影师的女性朋友们,然后说:“我们为什么不从在更广阔世界中观察到的女性身上学习呢?”They reported raising over 10 million dollars just in those first six years. So it works you know when you humanize a situation. So you don't talk about the women of Morocco. You show a woman from Morocco and you see the light in her eyes. But work is not all Griffiths focuses on. She is the mother of two children, and from the very start she promised herself to never part with them for more than two weeks. Most of her work trips with National Geographic lasted at least three months. So like their mother, Griffiths's children saw dozens of countries and met thousands of people. I've been traveling with my mom since I was just in her belly, so we've picked up a few stories over the years. We've been to some really remarkable places, feel real highlights over the years. I think that the Middle East is always gonna be really special to me. In 2008, Griffiths published a book of photo memoirs called A Camera, Two Kids and a Camel that focused on how to reach harmony between work, family and the whole wide world.2008年,格里菲思出版了一本名为A Camera, Two Kids and a Camel的摄影回忆录,该书聚焦于如何在工作、家庭和整个世界之间达成和谐。

Drive-thru Drama

I can already see that you don't like it. Look, I would just start over. How about that? Okay. Hi, my name is Taylor as you know, and this is the tear drop from the orange sky. No momma, it isn't like that at all. Dude, I've got to tell you what happened at old man Fletcher's class the other day. I mean this, this is insane. So Drive Thru Drama, it's kind of like a Disney ride without the scary animatronics. It's driving and stopping at each actor. It's a live actor. They perform a monologue where there are 10 stations and it all comes together to make one story. I came across something I had learned about in theater history called medieval pageant wagons which was common at the time where actors would be on a wagon and they would do their scene and then it would move to the next town or to the next group of audience members. So, I sort of took that idea and flipped it, where the actor stays in one place and then the audience drives around and hears the rest of the story. I was a banker. I've never done anything like this. I don't know that there's ever been anything like this to do before. So, it's kind of like some of the things but still it's not. It's entirely different. Part of my job was I would sort through the money and decide if money couldn't be used anymore. It's in the game. Okay? All Right. You know, I have a help cushion but it's not enough. Okay, listen. I think we ought to cut our losses, like try to outlast until maybe second place and then….. We've never done anything like this before but I'm really looking forward to it. We both love theater and any chance to go and see live theater, I was excited about because there hasn't been much this year. Well, I thought when Danielle came to me and said, "I want to do a show," my mind went to monologues. My mind went to plays that are traditionally told by one person at a time, a one-person show but spread out over 10 people. And I thought I guess that's possible to do 10 disparate stories that are all linked around one thing, which in this case is a dollar bill with some writing on it. Make a small change and those sound like pretty big changes to me, pal. Yes, I am going to cue you. So, this car needs to get over to the second actor. They'll be there for just a few moments. I'm trying to pace it so there's no accordion happening on the back side. I'll let you wait it from there. This is, I don't know, it looks really fun. You know, and we do like to go to things like this. She had a, battery is dead in her car. I ran the air conditioning during the last half hour without the car on. When they're done, they're going to give you a little bit of a bow. There's a chance for you to give a little clap and you may move on from there to the next.

Cover up racist tattoos

I feel that us, as the white community, that we hold a very strong responsibility to speak up and be heard. My name is Jeremiah Hirsch and I am the owner of Electric Pair O' Dice Tattoo in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Erase the hate is a campaign that we put together to cover up racist and offensive tattoos.“消除仇恨”是我们发起的一项活动,旨在遮盖种族主义和冒犯性纹身。I started to post information and stuff to raise awareness about Black Lives Matter and towards the Black community. And in doing so, I had a gentleman that I went to high school with that reached out to me about having a Confederate flag tattoo on his foot that he was embarrassed of and it was hitting him even harder seeing the stuff that I was posting. And he asked if we would work with him on covering it up. So I went to the guys in the shop and I was like, I think this would be a really good opportunity for us to help this guy out and cover it up, document it and then post it and then launch this campaign of Erase the hate. I want to cover up this tattoo that I got a long time ago. I'm getting rid of this heart here with this Confederate flag in it. The tattoo is free but we ask for a minimum donation for $100 that will go to one of the organizations that we're working with, that goes directly to the Black community. People have really been behind what we're doing. I mean you do have some, like, a handful that are, like, against it. Their argument is that it's heritage, not hate and that it's a symbolism of, you know, state freedom and stuff like that. But I feel, you know, not to be disrespectful, but I feel at the same time they're not very educated in the history of what it's behind and what it stands for and what the different declarations of the Confederacy was for. It was to keep and instill slavery. From my own experience and convictions that I've had, just seeing daily interactions and stuff like that, showed me my privilege. Being a white male in America and seeing the unjust acts and treatment towards the Black community and the huge difference between those two. I wanted to get involved as much as I could. So I started actively going to protests. I'm a single dad with four kids and I've always led by an example that we see someone by their heart and their actions and that love is love, that it's universal. Everything deserves a chance and the opportunity to live and be loved. My upbringing, my parents were preachers and was raised in the Christian faith and as I got older and ventured out on my own, I experienced other religions and stuff. I really connected with Buddhist and Hindu traditions and really found this parallel between religions and understanding that the universal importance is empathy, love and compassion. And then I see this connection between them and between human beings as a whole, and that being present here in this moment and where we are as a nation, is very important that we need this progressive push forward for equality for every human being that's on this planet, especially the Black community where they're affected most.

Famous 11th century tapestry to be housed at the British museum

The masterpiece is being loaned to London while its usual home in northern France undergoes a major renovation. Many experts believe the Bayeux Tapestry, which charts a time when Anglo-Saxon dominance was replaced by Norman rule, was made in England. So, the prospect of seeing it on display at the British Museum has sparked huge interest, with more than 80,000 people joining an online queue. In the coming weeks, the embroidery will be moved in a delicate operation involving a double crate, a lorry and a railway shuttle. Officials have insisted it will be as safe as a baby.

Yellow River Waterfall Tourist Area

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Yellow River Waterfall Tourist Area in Shaanxi Province. I am your tour guide. It is a great honor to enjoy this magnificent natural wonder with you. The Yellow River, as the mother river of the Chinese nation, not only gave birth to the splendid Chinese civilization but also created many breathtaking landscapes, and the Yellow River Waterfall is one of the most brilliant pearls among them. Before you approach the waterfall, you can hear the thunderous roar, as if the Yellow River is telling us its thousand-year-old stories. The closer you get to the waterfall, the louder the sound. The shocking power seems to penetrate your soul. Finally, the Yellow River Waterfall is presented before us. The waterfall is about 50 meters wide and has a drop of more than 30 meters. The surging Yellow River water rushes down from the cliffs, like a giant dragon breaking free and flowing thousands of miles. The splashing water mist fills the air, forming a hazy fairyland. Standing by the side of the waterfall, you will be shocked by its majestic momentum. The Yellow River water comes with tremendous force, splashing water and roaring waves. Every drop of water seems to contain endless power, and every wave is telling the heroism of the Yellow River. This kind of power makes people marvel at the uncanny workmanship of nature. Below the waterfall is a huge deep pool. The pool water is green and deep, forming a sharp contrast to the yellow color of the Yellow River water. Around the deep pool, there are strangely shaped rocks. Some are like fierce beasts, and some are like kind old people. They seem to be specially arranged here by nature to form a magical picture together with the waterfall. In different seasons, the Yellow River Waterfall has different charms. In spring, as the ice and snow melt, the water volume of the waterfall gradually increases. The waterfall is like thousands of horses galloping, with a magnificent momentum. In summer, with abundant rainfall, the Yellow River water is surging. The roar of the waterfall is even more deafening, and the water mist is everywhere, making people feel as if they are in a fairyland. In autumn, with the clear sky and white clouds, the waterfall looks even more magnificent against the backdrop of the blue sky and white clouds. In winter, there will be peculiar landscapes such as ice hanging and ice waterfall around the waterfall, like an ice and snow world. The Yellow River Waterfall is not only a natural landscape but also carries rich historical and cultural connotations. Since ancient times, countless literati and poets have left magnificent poems here. "The water of the Yellow River comes down from the heaven and rushes to the sea never to return," Li Bai's poem vividly depicts the majestic momentum of the Yellow River. In addition, the Yellow River Waterfall is also a symbol of the Chinese national spirit. Its momentum of moving forward bravely and never retreating inspires generations of Chinese people. During the Anti-Japanese War, the roar of the Yellow River Waterfall was like the cry of the Chinese nation against foreign enemies, inspiring people's patriotic enthusiasm and fighting spirit. While enjoying the waterfall, you can also taste the local specialties. For example, the mutton noodles in northern Shaanxi. The noodles are chewy, the mutton is tender, and the soup is rich and unforgettable. There are also local red dates, which are big, thick-fleshed, sweet and delicious, and nutritious. To allow you to better appreciate the waterfall, there are several viewing platforms here. You can choose different angles according to your preferences to view this wonder. During the tour, please pay attention to safety, do not approach dangerous areas, andabideby the regulations of the scenic area. At the same time, take care of the environment and do not litter. Let's jointly protect this beautiful natural landscape. I hope everyone will have a pleasant and unforgettable time in the Yellow River Waterfall Tourist Area and leave wonderful memories! Thank you all!

Jiuzhaigou Valley

Hello everyone! Welcome to Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area, which is known as the "fairyland on earth" and the "fairy tale world". I am your tour guide for this trip. It is my great honor to start this dream journey with you. Jiuzhaigou is located in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is a branch of the Baihe River in the upper reaches of the Baishuigou. It is named after the nine Tibetan villages. Jiuzhaigou is over 2,000 meters above sea level and is covered with primeval forests. There are 108 lakes distributed in the ditch. It has six wonders: "emerald lakes, cascading waterfalls, colorful forests, snowy peaks, Tibetan customs, and blue ice", and is known as the "fairyland on earth". Entering Jiuzhaigou, the first thing that comes into view is the brilliant and colorful forest. Every golden autumn, the trees on the mountain are tinted into various colors by the autumn wind. They are as red as fire, as yellow as gold, and as green as jade. It seems that nature has overturned its palette and painted a magnificent picture for us. The lakes in Jiuzhaigou are a great wonder. These lakes are called "Haizi" by the local people. The lake water is blue and clear all year round and is bright and limpid to the bottom. With the change of light and the passage of seasons, different tones and water rhymes are presented. The Five-Flower Lake can be said to be the essence of Jiuzhaigou. In the same water area, you can see colors such as yellowish, dark green, dark blue, and dark cyan. They are mottled and confusing, and extremely colorful. It is too beautiful to be real. There is also the Five-Color Pond. Although it is small in area, under the sunshine, it is colorful and just like a bright gem inlaid on the earth. The waterfalls in Jiuzhaigou are also a sight not to be missed. Nuorilang Waterfall is the widest waterfall in China. The surging water comes from the Nuorilang Sea and flows down from the top of the waterfall like the Milky Way pouring down, with the sound shaking the valley. There is an observation deck opposite the waterfall. Standing on the deck, you can have a panoramic view of the entire waterfall. The majestic momentum will surely shock you. Jiuzhaigou not only has stunning natural scenery but also has rich Tibetan culture. The Tibetan compatriots here maintain their traditional way of life and unique cultural customs. Their songs, dances, costumes, and architectures are all full of strong ethnic characteristics, adding a profound cultural heritage to this magical land. While enjoying the beautiful scenery, I also hope that everyone can cherish every plant and tree here and protect this precious treasure bestowed upon us by nature. Now, please follow me and fully devote yourself to the embrace of Jiuzhaigou to feel its magic and beauty!现在,请大家跟随我一起,尽情地投入到九寨沟的怀抱,去感受它的神奇与美丽吧!I hope everyone can have an unforgettable time in Jiuzhaigou. Thank you all!

Vision for Future Urban Water Use

This is how these young engineers envision Jacksonville, a coastal city in Florida in the next 100 years. The model called Agua Prope, meaning clean water, was presented by a team of middle school students from Houston at the Future City Nationals in Washington DC. The students' goal was to build a city with a clean and reliable water supply. Many members on the Houston team have roots in Karachi, Pakistan's largest and most populated city, where water shortages and access to clean water are a persistent problem. Karachi right now is very behind, unlike America. A lot of people are on the streets, they don't have water to drink or they're drinking contaminated water needing any money. It's very hard to even like take showers over there. And now go to Karachi for example, there's a lot of water shortage and power shortage. For example, the water there costs a lot, and sometimes it's contaminated, sometimes which causes problems such as diarrhea, people getting sick and much more, and you don't have water in the house for days. The government in Karachi says the city supplies only half of the water it needs daily. The consequences of Pakistan's water problems are tragic. UNICEF reports every year 53,000 children die of diarrhea caused by drinking contaminated water. Students on the Houston team say their model includes a robust system that monitors supply and demand, storage, filtration, and diversion of conventional as well as flood waters across the Jacksonville landscape. Our project is Agua Prope, located in Jacksonville, Florida, so the main problem in Jacksonville are storm surges, hurricanes and floods. A lot of problems actually internationally going on right now are that many people are not having access to water. And a lot of people that do have access to water are drinking contaminated water that has like birth defects and like cancer-related issues. And they're also a coastal city. So we know how to generate power. Organizers say some models are actually implemented. Indonesian villagers build mini learning center

Small wooden boxes like these have become a common sight in American neighborhoods. Visitors can take a book or leave a book. In Indonesia, free libraries are rare, especially in rural communities. But they seemed like a great idea to Nining Dwi Astuti, a civil servant who lives in central Java. With the support of local officials and fellow villagers, she built the only registered Little Free Library in the area. Many people asked how do we borrow a book, who do we return the book to. I said just take it and if you want to returned it, just put it back. They were kind of surprised. Her little blue box was a hit with villagers. It is now a learning hub for local children. I come here to study, read books, and borrow books. Seeing children drawn to her free library, Dwi Astuti decided to take it a step further. In the village, the internet is limited. Many people don't have internet at home. They use internet tokens. The quota is also limited. We took the initiative to install Wi-Fi at home, so children would borrow books in the morning and study there at night. Elsewhere in central Java, a local teacher Ari Hendra Permana repurposed used furniture to set up his own Little Free Library. Nowadays, children seldom read books. Instead, they play games. The target of the library is children. Since he set up the free library in 2019, children of all ages congregate on Permana's front porch. Many books are torn and damaged because they are borrowed so often. This one was glued earlier, but now it's torn again. Ideally, a little free library functions by allowing kids to not only borrow books, but also to donate them, resulting in steady circulation. But this is difficult to achieve in villages where the literacy level is low. To overcome the problem, Dwi Astuti and Permana rely on donations and purchase books using their own money. I received book donations from friends and colleagues. I also received a grant from the village. To buy books, I have to travel at least 45 kilometers to downtown Cilacap, because there are no book stores around here. For both of them, it's a small sacrifice that makes a big difference for their communities.

The birthplace of takeaway coffee culture

As in any large metropolis, mornings in New York City start like this: small coffee and one bagel please. They come to work rain or shine and are always welcomed by busy New Yorkers: the food cart vendors. Two dollars will buy you a breakfast. Another popular morning destination is the deli, short for delicatessen, usually a small store that has everything one might need: a small snack selection, some hot food and the obligatory coffee-to-go. We've had a lot of famous people come in. All these people are coming so restless alone. And Howard Stern is a customer, but he doesn't drink the coffee. Coffee first came to New York in the early 1600s, back when the city was called New Amsterdam by its Dutch founders. New York City was really the coffee capital of North America, and the coffee culture of New York City is very distinct because it was a Dutch colony. By the 1800s stores would sell steaming hot cups of coffee for a few cents. Local rumors and news came for free. Once paper cups made their entrance, coffee-to-go became a morning routine. We provided an excellent cup of freshly roasted coffee every single day for 100 years. Alexandra Vassilaros is the owner of a coffee empire.100年来,我们每天都提供一杯优质的现烘咖啡。 For three generations, her company has been giving New Yorkers what they need most in the mornings. Since the 1960s, many New York coffee shop owners have been immigrants from Greece. So it's not accidental that one of the most recognizable coffee cup symbols here is an amphora. Like yellow taxi cabs, they were a symbol for coffee-to-go, but then Starbucks came along. Starbucks has done a very good job of creating a roast profile and roasting notably darker, for example, than many other roasters. And for many years, this was their sole point of differentiation. They had quality coffees and they roasted them very dark. And their consumers started to become educated to actually appreciate that. For those New Yorkers who prefer to sip their coffee in a less hurried manner, there is Caffe Reggio. Walls are adorned with Caravaggio style paintings. Benches are decorated with the Medici family ciphers and the coffee machine here is the oldest in New York. At this time it should be, you know, packed with the line inside outside. Caffe Reggio owner Fabrizio Cavallacci has been here for the last 50 years, and so were his parents before he took the helm. Coffee is still made based on traditional Italian recipes. Cafe Reggio has always attracted New York's Bohemian crowd. It's nice to sit down and have a coffee, and I think that I'm sitting here with Bob Dylan or Kerouac or one of the great poets who has come and sat and written here at one of the tables. In a classical interior or rushing out of a deli, a cup of coffee remains an integral part of New York City life.

She has removed more than 300 fishing hooks from sharks

I love my sharks and I start seeing them coming in with these hooks. The hook removal started like anything would start when you love someone. I just wanted to make their lives a little bit better to relieve their pain. With foggy eye, one day she showed up and she had one that was actually inside. I would open her jaw and see the hook. And at a certain moment I decided to basically stick my hand in and I pulled the hook out. But then as soon as she came back, she allowed me to pet her, and from that day on became a shark that would just show up on the dive. And all of a sudden I'd feel a pressure on my hip. And I would turn around and she would be, like, leaning in to me and just stop swimming. This change of personality from before the hook and after the hook was very much a light bulb for me. When I remove the hooks, I feel happy, satisfied and relieved. And then the other thing I noticed is, as I start removing hooks from my known sharks, other sharks just start showing up with hooks. People ask me, "Do they communicate?" And I'm like, "Yes!" They're very accepting. Sharks in general, in the world, are very tolerant of our presence, entering their world. I wanted to pet a shark from the first moment I saw one. It took a year and some time before the transition between being a diver and then it being a profession and then working with sharks and then finally having a shark in my lap. It's understanding that it's done on the shark's terms, not on mine. Because every time a shark does that, I do realize what a privilege it is. This is a wild animal and she's giving me full trust. It's a complete abandonment, saying, "In this moment, I trust you. You're not going to hurt me." It is something to be absolutely in awe of no matter how many times it happens. What I've developed is an appreciation for their vulnerability. I've dedicated a lifetime, 26 years, and 25 of those have been spent in the water with sharks. We may still be a little bit afraid of sharks, but we need sharks. The sharks are vital for balancing the ecosystems. And this planet survives on the balance of the oceans. They have been affected by our fishing, by our coastal destruction, by our pollution. This is the box of hooks that I've removed through the years. Over 300! I think sharks are absolutely beautiful! I love how they seamlessly swim through the water.300多个! Like my parents taught me, "There are no monsters in the sea, only the ones we make up in our heads."

Birdwatching is good for your mental and physical health

I am Larry Meade. I am President of the Northern Virginia Bird Club. I've always been interested in birding, but I've been seriously birding, keeping track since 2002. The connotation of bird watching is that all we do is watch the birds. But birding is more of an all-encompassing concept because not only do we look at them, we study them. We do scientific surveys. Looked like a juvenile to me because I saw an adult fly to the right. We study their behavior. The one behind me in the pine tree. We travel to see them. We are at Huntley Meadows Park. What is really unique about this is it is a freshwater wetland which is unusual. It's got the nice boardwalk. It's pretty unique in that way and that you can get really pretty close to the birds and other wildlife. Now, the Great Crested Flycatcher is back. Jessica is a member of our club. Here's another. Here's a Tree Swallow right here. I hear him singing. It's nice to be able to share experiences. If I'm by myself, I like to post my photos on Facebook and get reaction from people that way. But when we're with a person, number one, it's another set of eyes, like she spotted someCedarWaxwings I probably wouldn't have seen. And I spotted some stuff she probably wouldn't have seen. So, you've got more chance to see the birds, but you can also discuss the birds and just catching up with friends, too. It's just a social thing. Being outside is always rewarding regardless of the weather, regardless of what it is that we get to see, because the outdoors is always a surprise. You never know what you're going to find. Back in 2013, I was playing around on the Internet and found an app that I could download on my phone that was a birding app. And so that kind of piqued my interest. And then I went and got a book about birding and realized just howintricateand detailed it really is. Birding kind of became like a scavenger hunt. And Larry mentioned earlier that birders keep a life list, which is a list of all the birds that they've seen. And so, when you start out and everything feels new, you're sort of, you know, adding to that life list and it's growing and it's growing and it just becomes addictive. It's good for your health to be outdoors. It's a very calming experience. But personally, as a former educator, I believe that everybody should be connected to nature because we have to conserve nature. The birds are diminishing. The research shows that we've lost over 3 million birds over the past few decades and that's really scary. And I think that people aren't going to be aware of that if they're not connected to it. In many places, the only legitimate place to go other than the grocery store and the hospital, is the outdoors. And it's a safe place to be right now as long as you keep your distance from other people. And so, people are going outside in ways that they never have before. And they're noticing things that they hadn't noticed before. And they are making that connection. And they're finding that birdwatching or birding, as we like to call it, is very relaxing. The basic tools for a birder are binoculars and some kind of field guide so you can figure out what the birds are. I really like the Red-headed Woodpecker. That's one of my favorites. I would encourage people to pay attention to birds. There is a whole worldwide community of birders. I mean it's not just here. It's everywhere. It's just a lot of fun.

Simpler version of Stonehenge discovered

Stonehenge was built to mark the movements of the Sun. The huge stones were placed precisely to line up with the sunrise on the summer solstice and sunset on the winter solstice. The discovery in the nearby village of Bulford was a much more simple construction. All that's left of it are two pits in the ground, about 120 metres apart, which archaeologists believe held large wooden posts. The holes were discovered about 10 years ago, but a new analysis examining how the posts were positioned, with the reconstruction of the ancient landscape, sky and horizon, reveals that they accurately lined upwith the Sun on the solstices.

Birdwatching boom

Many young Brits are buying binoculars in hopes of encountering one of nature's most physically and audibly beautiful creatures - birds. You might think of birdwatching as an old-fashioned pastime most often enjoyed by the generations before you, but surveys conducted by the RSPB show a 47% increase in participation overall, with an even higher 1,088% surge by Gen Zers. So why do so many young people want to flock to the park to watch birds? A group leader at RSPB Bristol highlighted how many students have joined his outings. He mentioned that some who join have 'never been out in their local nature spaces' and 'want to explore'. He added that the diversity of species you can find is impressive 'considering it's so urban' around the city. There is also the rise of a desire to disconnect from technology and go outside, or as Gen Z would call it touch grass, to help with mental health. Research from the University of Surrey has looked at how bird sounds restore attention and even alleviate stress. Ironically, when interviewed by BBC Bristol, individuals mentioned how phones and social media have actually helped encourage the hype of this hobby. There are now a variety of apps in which you can record a birdsong and have it instantly identified. People also use social media to share knowledge and location for birds. A phenomenon known as 'bioblitzing', a combination of bio and blitzing, has emerged. This is when a walker documents as many birds and other species of animals as they can within a limited amount of time. It has been said to create a safe space in which birdwatchers can get into friendly competitions over who can spot the most! Furthermore, a buzz around the birdwatching hashtag has cultivated humour around turning 30 and entering your 'birdwatching era'. Whether it's the chance to reconnect with nature, improve mental wellbeing, or join a growing online community, birdwatching is no longer seen as a hobby reserved for older generations. Young people are embracing it in record numbers, using both technology and the outdoors to discover the wildlife on their doorstep. From identifying birdsongs with apps to competing in bioblitzing challenges, a modern twist has transformed the pastime into something fresh and accessible. It seems that for Gen Z and young millennials alike, birdwatching has become a hoot.

Researchers at this camp overlooking Greenland's Helheim Glacier have some bad news. This glacier has retreated more than 10 kilometers or so in the last decade or so, from that position far off and to my left to where you see it today. It was here in 2018 that researchers captured this footage of large chunks of ice breaking away in a process called calving.2018年,研究人员正是在这里拍摄到了大块冰体断裂脱落的画面,这一过程被称为裂冰作用。Scientists like New York University's David Holland measured and observed climate change. This summer Holland saw record-shattering heat and ice melt. Large glaciers are retreating. We can detect this with satellite, with effectively cameras in space. And we're seeing a very large signal of melt coming from this one particular glacier out in West Antarctica called Thwaites. NASA and the European Space Agency or ESA released the study in December美国国家航空航天局(NASA)和欧洲航天局(ESA)于12月发布了这项研究,showing the Greenland icesheetrapidly melting, having lost nearly four trillion metric tons between 1992 and 2018. Holland says a similar fate appears underway in Antarctica. That glacier is holding back several other glaciers of the West Antarctic IceSheet. So all told, it is conceivable and not that it will happen but it could happen, that up to 3 meters of global sea level could be unleashed unto us. Cities like Alexandria, Egypt take countermeasures to slow crashing waves because of rising sea levels near ice shelves affect sea levels everywhere. Warmer waters around retreating glaciers like the one in Antarctica expedite the process. This glacier is perhaps unstable. It is certainly retreating now at a rapid rate. It has raised its stuff to the point of now using physics, mathematics and observation. It's actually credible, plausible that this thing could cause a major change in sea level. A study published April in the journal Nature showed glaciers worldwide annually lose 369 billion metric tons of snow and ice.《自然》杂志四月发表的一项研究显示,全球冰川每年流失3690亿吨冰雪。The Greenland icesheetalone holds enough water to raise sea level by nearly seven and a half meters.

Sibongile Zulu is among the 7.7 million south Africans who are HIV positive. She takes a cocktail of antiretroviral drugs to suppress the virus. When south Africa imposed a coronavirus lockdown in March, Zulu lost her job. Weeks later her local clinic began to run short of some medication. I think for two months, I was using only one that I was supposed to use two. And if I don't use both of them, it's a big risk and I can get sick. Across the world doctors say the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns will likely hamper the fight against other killer diseases like tuberculosis or TB, malaria and HIV. Epidemiologist Dr Salim S. We have seen a decline in the number of tests for tuberculosis. We've seen a decline in the number of patients coming in to get their medications. So that's of deep concern because it could undo the years of work that it has taken us to get to this point. TB cases and deaths have fallen year on year in south Africa and many other countries. But it remains one of the world's biggest killers with an estimated 1.5 million deaths last year. We know there's 50% decrease in TB testing in south Africa at the moment. 50%。So people are not able to go to the clinic or go to hospitals and so on. And they're not being diagnosed with TB, and this means that they can then transmit TB further to other people. So it's just going to sort of snowball. Malaria deaths in Africa could double in 2020 warn researchers from Imperial College London, unless disrupted services such as mosquito net distribution and malaria treatments are maintained. Despite thedireforecasts, Karim says there is opportunity. The opportunity to look at integration, integration between covid, HIV, TB and other conditions. So that when we are investing for our coronavirus vigilance, we are benefiting not just the covid epidemic, but the epidemics of HIV and TB as well. The global community must look at the bigger picture, says McQuaid. We start to lose gains that we've been making in recent years, hard-fought gains that we've made. And we could be pushed back five, ten, twenty years even. Huge resources have been dedicated to the fight against the coronavirus. Doctors say it's vital that other deadly diseases are not neglected.

It was the first splashdown by US astronauts in 45 years

A busy summer of space travel came to a soft splashing end this week for astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley. It was the first splashdown by US astronauts in 45 years. As we descended through the atmosphere, the thrusters were firing almost continuously. And I think this the sound that makes, I did record some audio of it, but it doesn't sound like a machine, it sounds like an animal. The reentry is a fairly dynamic event and you can see from you know just an overall view of the capsule that reentry is a pretty demanding environment, you know with the different scorches on the vehicle and the windows were not spared any of that. The two rode a SpaceX Dragon capsule to the ISS and back, marking the first such journey aboard a privately built and owned craft in the space station's 20-year history. The mission's success means another SpaceX crew launch could happen as early as next month with possible tourist flights next year. Also this week from Cape Canaveral in Florida, NASA launched Perseverance, its most elaborate life-seeking Mars rover. Research scientist Dr Bethany Ehlmann explains the mission. We will be able to as before with rovers drive up to rocks, investigate them, figure out which ones are the most interesting. But this time we'll be able to then core a piece of that rock out into a sample about the size of a piece of chalk. Stony Brook University professor Scott McLennan says, to best study the samples collected by Perseverance, the rocks must land back on earth. They're the gift that keeps on giving because the samples will remain. Our ability to make measurements will evolve. They will get better and better over time. And we can always go back and revisit those samples that we've brought back to earth. Samples may hold clues as to whether life ever existed on the red planet. NASA and the European Space Agency will join forces to bring them back to earth around 2031.NASA和欧洲航天局将联手在2031年左右把它们带回地球。

US seeks to hire more female police officers.

The challenge is to treat everyone involved in that call neutrally and not have any predisposed thoughts or…我们面临的挑战是中立地对待电话中的每一个人,并且不要有任何先入为主的想法或……In her film Women In Blue, data official chronicles some of the challenges female police officers face as they help train fellow officers against excessive use of force in the male-dominated Minneapolis police department. Officer Alice White is one of the trainers. We interact with people who are rapists, murderers. It's sometimes hard to show respect to someone like that. So in my mind I had to switch this to professionalism. As long as you're being professional, you're gonna look respectful. The film echoes findings won as early as the 1970s by the National Police Foundation that female police officers act less aggressively and believe in using less aggression than their male counterparts. I just knew that I wanted to make a film exploring what women could bring in a very troubled time that our country has had with police violence. Hi, do you know why I'm stopping you? You can calm down. I see you're shaking. Just relax, relax, it's all good. You can see in that traffic stop that that man that was stopped by Alice had someone who was nurturing and had his well-being at the top and not some law enforcement. But the film also shows women remaining sidelined making up only 16 percent of the Minneapolis police department. 16%。The chief has selected no women for his executive team. I have a great deal of respect for chief Rondo. But the thing that hurt me the most was the fact that in a profession dominated by male voices, they're losing any female perspective. In Seattle, police chief Carmen Best says her department's recruitment ads are designed to attract more women to the force. We want to show more women. We want to show women in diverse positions. We want to make sure that it's not always car chases and gunfights and repelling off buildings. A lot of what we do has nothing to do with brawn, has a lot more to do with brain and skill sets and the ability to empathize and to work with people. It's not just that we need more women but we need a lot more women of color. I think that's where our police departments could potentially transform. I got assigned to become a sergeant and then fourth president. Her film shows only a few African-American female officers like Alice White rising through the ranks. It's important for the black community to see women who look like me in this role. Chief Best relates her own experience rising through the ranks. Some folks while super supportive, others were not, maybe you know, and there was always working through that. My resolve was, that's their problem, not mine. I'm here to do my job. I'm going to do it to the best of my ability. And I really believe that as you move up, you have to lift up and bring others along with you.

Why gun ownership is necessary

You never know when at any second something might happen that you might need it. That's the point. It's not that you think it's going to. It's that you recognize the possibility that it can. You recognize the possibility that there are evil people in the world who do evil things and you have to be able to protect yourself against that. I think I'm an average gun owner because, I mean, I'm an average guy. I mean, there's nothing really special about me. From an early age, Dad would go out hunting, I went with him. You know, I was always in the woods with him shooting and you know, at the range shooting, and, you know, that's just, it was a way of life. We're going to the Minerva Sportsman's Club, a local range that I'm a member of. This is my AR-15 pistol, Hungarian AK-47, Marlin Model 60-22 rifle, Heritage Rough Rider, the U.S.-made rifle that's kind of a cross between an AK-47 and an AR-15, Spanish police pistol, SKS rifle, little Taurus TX-22, Ruger Mini-14. I own more than a dozen firearms and less than I want. Well, for several different reasons. Like any other tool, specific firearms are for specific purposes. I have rifles that are just simply, strictly for accuracy to try to put holes in a piece of paper far away. I have firearms for hunting. The majority of my firearms though are for defensive purposes. Over a period of years, that's what most people do. They get one here, then they get one there, then they get another one. Sometimes they tell their wife, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they just, 'Oh no, I've had that one for a while. Yeah, don't you remember I bought that back then?' That's right. So, this is Jason Spoon. He's a friend of mine and a firearms instructor. His family runs the local gun shop here in town. What'd you bring with us today? I brought a duty pistol and a Henry Golden Boy. Nice. Classic. I think between all of us, we have some pretty good representations of what kind of stuff people own around here. Alright, let's go get some targets. It's wonderful if you're a duck. It's a horrible downpour but, you know, I don't really mind shooting at it once in a while because you can't always pick when you might have to shoot.

What happens when octopuses take over

It's never been easy for fishermen in England's southwest to make a living, but now they face a competitor: around 200,000 octopuses, probably coming from the Mediterranean. Climate change is blamed for this migration, and the animals are apparently gobbling up the crab, lobster and other marine life which many fishermen depend on. A report published on Monday found octopuses spotted further north and in Wales, and said fishermen are having to adapt, hunting for the octopuses themselves. One market town recently saw 100 tonnes of octopus sold in a single day.

How high temperatures affect sleep

Around the world, summers are getting hotter. Day and night temperatures are increasing. What impact could that be having on how we sleep? Temperature and sleep are closely linked. Typically, our bodies cool themselves down before we sleep. One of the main ways that we do this is by widening blood vessels near the skin to allow heat to dissipate. In hot weather, this process becomes less effective as it is more difficult for heat to be transferred. One of the body's mechanisms to speed up this process is by allowing sweat to evaporate. However, in humid conditions it's harder for evaporation to take place. If the body is unable to cool down, then it's more difficult for people to fall asleep and more likely that sleep patterns can be disrupted. This means that it's important for us to try to manage the temperature of the environment that we sleep in. While it can be costly, air conditioning is a useful tool to keep our sleeping environment cool. Managing ventilation is also important. During the hottest hours of the day keeping windows and curtains closed can stop hot air and heat from sunlight entering our homes. At night, once the temperature has dropped, opening windows can allow cool air to come in and reduce the temperature in our homes. Fans can help to speed up cooling, as long as air temperatures are low enough. They become less effective in hotter conditions. It's not just rooms that we can cool down. Using breathable bedding and sleepwear makes it easier for our bodies to regulate temperature. While it may seem counter-intuitive, it can be beneficial to have a warm bath or shower before sleep. Warm water can cause more blood to flow to our skin. Once you get out of the bath or shower, this means that you cool down more quickly. Another tip suggested by sleep experts Kevin Morgan and Lisa Artis is to cool your socks in the fridge and then put them on before going to sleep. They also say that it's important to try to keep to your usual sleep routine to avoid disruption to your sleep habits.

Help out with 3D printing

So it's a 3D-printed cowl or helmet. It's like a mask basically but it's specifically designed and tailored to fit my face exactly. Because of that, it's kind of difficult to get on because it is a rigid, hard plastic. But the amount of time that it takes to make something like this is, and cost even is far superior than it would be to sculpting it, molding it, casting it. We are cosplayers. We are comic book nerds and fans of comic book culture and everything like that. So we are naturally inclined to craft things and creativity. That led me to a job at the Long Beach Public Library teaching 3D design and 3D printing, which led me to purchasing one, which I've used to make costumes and props and things like that for cosplay. We have a lot of friends in the medical field and stuff and just, "What can we do to help instead of just sitting at home watching Netflix?" although, if you are home, watching Netflix, great, do that. Stay there. This is what we've done in one week on two machines. With the masks, they are done in three pieces. There is the front nose part. There's the inside. There's like a shield and in between that is the four layers of MERV-13 filters. With COVID-19, everyone's, you know, needs help on the respirators or the ventilator machines. This is a way that two people can use one machine now. So, it splits off, kind of like, you know, back in the day, you had for Walkman and you could let two people could listen to it at the same time. So, two people can use one machine now. So, we're just basically going to the friends that we know, the people who are actually doing the jobs right now and just reaching out to them first because that's easier. There is a gray area and we talked about this before, where hospitals are not supposed to accept anything from a non-medical professional. However, they have been reaching out to other people because they just need anything rather than nothing. And that's why we are kind of trying to go out of our way to make sure that these things are able to withstand the processes that they would go through for sanitization. So, we've switched to these ones here, which are the high heat plastic. So, they'll melt at a much higher rate, higher temperature. They are a lot sturdier. They are going to last longer. They can withstand being sanitized over and over and over again. We have set up an Amazonwish list. So, whatever people buy on there, gets shipped directly and we are just using it. People get weird about like sending money or things like that. What's it actually going to? And yeah, and we just want to do this. We are not trying to make anything out of this or whatever. We're just trying to help.

New Yorkers seek to remove discriminatory statue

This statue of the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, who served from 1901 to 1909, depicts Roosevelt on horseback with a native American and a black man standing alongside him. To those who object to it, the statue suggests colonialism and white supremacy. It is one of a few statues around New York that protestors want removed, including one of Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus being pedestalized and lionized like that is similar to Roosevelt being on a high horse. And just like he needs to come down off his high horse, we need to take Columbus off of his pedestal, because he doesn't represent what this land was once representative of. This was the island of Manhattan. I think a lot of people are offended by this because it's sort of like you know, we act like we discovered this country first. There were humans living here for thousands of years, so we didn't discover anything, we took it. However, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, son of the late governor Mario Cuomo, who comes from a well-known New York Italian-American family wants the statue to stay. I understand the feelings about Christopher Columbus and some of his acts which nobody would support. But the statue has come to represent and signify appreciation for the Italian-American contribution to New York. So on that, for that reason I supported. New Yorkers themselves, however, feel conflicted on the removal of monuments like these. Any of them I don't care. If you're not for us, you are against us. Gotta go. Martin Luther King? We could put him on those. We can start over. Obama? We could start over. Take them all off. I mean, the way America was built regardless was wrong and we gotta start over again. I think this is an absolutely terrible decision. Having been born in the Soviet Union where statues and the history was rewritten, I am absolutely against these types of decisions. New York City being the size it is, there are many more statues that will come under the microscope. Should they stay? Or should they go? Even before current controversies, New York City's mayor and his wife have been looking at putting up more statues depicting women and people of color.

The new generation of Americans is speaking up on TikTok and Twitter.

We felt we were completely empty. Go reserve tickets now and leave him standing there alone on the stage. What do you say? Call it the TikTok phenomenon. A call to action on the social network may have contributed to lower than expected turnout at a recent Trump rally. In Nashville, six teenagers organized a march against police brutality that drew a crowd of nearly 10,000. How did they get the word out? Instagram. Today's youth are speaking up using what they know best: social media. Instagram。 I think overall technology has really been a driving force for us, having those things that already connect us and then kind of trying to figure out how we can manipulate these things, how we can use them to our advantage. Here in New York City, Jessica Rosario and her peers have been busy rallying their community around online voter registration. We wanted to really create a space for digital democracy. Sharing resources and building online coalitions with other like-minded organizations are key. There's nothing better than coming together in a group and just really talking about what's necessary and then splitting up and creating those tools so that we could share it out to our communities. Digital activism isn't new but young people today are making more use of it. Rosario helped create digital toolkits that supporters could use to push for legislative action in the stateSenate. People could click on it and it would automatically open up their Twitter with like a pre-written tweet that we had created. And just in a second, you could send that. It tags the elected officials, telling them exactly what the legislation name is and why we were demanding it. Rosario believes the Twitter storm helped result in a section of New York's civil rights law being repealed. We created that in just a matter of I want to say hours to a day. Others are repurposing existing platforms like Twitch, a livestreaming site for gamers that recently has become a place to catch protests as they happen on the ground. For 21-year-old Rosario who falls squarely in the Gen Z demographic, they're still in appreciation for old-school technology. Text isn't always the best. If you have a lot to say, you want to hear people's emotions when you're like telling them news. I love phone calls way better than text messages. For these digital natives, getting everyone's attention is all about the online and offline connections.

The special military bond between a Navy father and his daughter.

For Rear Admiral (Sel.) Putnam Browne and his daughter Francesca, the Navy isn't just a career, it's the family business. I definitely think he has a major influence on me whether he meant to or not. But he taught me so much and I knew that it was the right choice for me because of him. Francesca attended the prestigious US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Like her father, she rode on a Navy crew team. When a sudden hip injury kept her from rowing, Francesca switched to steering a boat as a coxswain for the men's team, making them the team's first-ever father-daughter duo. That was another very cool transition because we had this, another shared kind of bond. Francesca sailed her Naval Academy cruise aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, the same ship her father commanded. So when coronavirus precautions prevented a big Navy graduation last month, Francesca had an idea. She asked if I would commission her and do it at the Lincoln Memorial since Lincoln means so much to our family. We were the only people there. It was I think 7 a.m.on kind of a rainy day and we stood right in front of Lincoln. My dad administered the oath of office. I definitely choked up, maybe a little bit. It was a very heartfelt culmination of events. The Navy wasn't such a clear-cut path for Lieutenant Commander Megan Isaac, whose dad is a retired Navy admiral. I had always thought I was gonna be a ballerina. That was my plan. But on September 11th of Issac's senior year of high school, her nation was attacked, and her father was stationed at the Pentagon. That day impacted me so much because someone who had been always a point of stability and assurance in my life, there was a question mark there for a few hours. And someone had done that, someone had attacked our country, and I felt for the first time in my life very compelled to do something about it. In the following days after 9/11, Issac's father watched with pride and surprise as his daughter applied to attend the Navy's top Academy. I don't think he believes that I would ever actually be in a navy Academy, and they essentially take all of your personal belongings away. They cut off your hair. I remember just thinking, did I just make the worst decision? What did I just do! And that I feel like it's captured very well in my face in that moment, and my dad's like, it'll be great! For me, it was a really rewarding and exciting day because I knew that she was up to the task. The father-daughter duo has since shared countless Navy experiences throughout Issac's nearly 15 years of service. And it turns out the USS Abraham Lincoln isn't just special for the Brownes. In 2018 Isaac led the public affairs team of Lincoln, where her father had served 10 years prior as the destroyer squadron commander, and she was able to bring him back aboard.2018年,艾萨克领导了林肯号的公共事务团队,10年前她的父亲曾在该航母上担任驱逐舰中队指挥官,她还能让父亲重返舰上。He wasn't in uniform or it really didn't have any of the authorities. I had the uniform. I had the radio. I knew everyone on the ship. I'll tell you what I just couldn't have been more pleased and proud of watching my daughter in action. It was great. The road hasn't always been easy, but the Navy has given the father and daughter a special bond. Because it's something that only we share. There have been several times in my life, where I just have felt like I didn't know where to go, what the right direction was. And he's always been the one to listen and make sure that I stayed on the right path. A path both pairs say was illuminated by their sense of adventure and their desire to serve.

The Thinner Blue Line

So, here we have me graduating from the police academy. This is my chief at the time. Quite happy to have a gun and abadge. I was working on the bus. We used to wear plain clothes on the bus. And that's me with the general manager. I had just made sergeant. I remember being the only African-American female in that group of promotees. I remember the levels of competitiveness and the gratification that I was able to compete at that level and excel. My name is Tracie Simmons and I am a retired Deputy Chief of the Metro Transit Police Department. I served there for over 25 years in various capacities. I came up through the ranks and I retired at the rank of Deputy Chief. And I was the first African-American woman to reach that rank at my police agency. It was very intimidating for a young woman, especially a young black woman. I was in a highly, you know, Anglo workplace with majority male and it was challenging. You had to get in to fit in, to get along and really, you really still weren't a part of. Be clear. You know, in the police department, there wasrampantsexism, rampant racism. There were remarks made in roll calls that, you know, I wouldn't dare repeat. And as I was there, because I was there, I got to be a voice for things that needed to change and be different. There'll be a certain segment of racism because we come from those same communities. Police officers come from those same communities and they bring along with them their belief systems, their worldviews and their cultural experiences. I think it's come to a head. I think there's a lot of things that we get to see now because of technology that has occurred for many, many years. And that now it's kind of in our face. We all had an opportunity to see George Floyd, you know, be murdered right on television. I've never seen anything like it in my life and I don't think most Americans have. I think though, our country is in a breakdown and I think that around police brutality and law enforcement, I would tell the protesters that I support them wholeheartedly. I would tell them to be thoughtful and be aware that there are other stories and other spaces. That's just part of the story but it's not the real story. It doesn't tell the story of the ten police officers that got killed last week. It doesn't tell that story. Or the guy down the street that got shot by other assailants who the police locked up and now they're in jail. So, there are a lot of stories here to be told. And so, I'm hopeful. I do think that there are definite ways that we can begin to change the culture and we get to just, you know, retire out those that want to hold onto the old ways. It's not like….It's changing. And those that aren't ready to change need to move on. They need to go. Because he changed not only this country, not only the United States, he changed the world. George Floyd changed the world. We get to say what legacy George Floyd's death has on us as a people. As long as people feel like it isn't going to die out like all the rest of them, because those four officers will go to jail for a very long time. But it doesn't mean I feel super safe about my son driving at night. It just doesn't.

How American elementary school students view racial issues

We are approximately 11 miles away from Fort Monroe, where the first African-Americans arrived approximately 400 years ago. I am Robin Hunt-Crenshaw, the principal here at George P. Phenix Pre-K through 8 school. The school is predominantly African-American. Today, I will be meeting with 3rd and 4th grade students to discuss the issues of slavery, what they know about slavery. We need to learn about slavery because in the upcoming generations we can't all just believe that this country was always different races combined together. We have to know what our history was. There was land taken from different races because they were that race. And I don't feel like any of that is right because we're all human beings. Now we're allowed to do stuff that we couldn't do before. We have to know, this is why we're free and this is why we can do this. Some people say it was nice back then, but it wasn't always nice. Almost two years ago, in Charlottesville, Virginia, there was people in their cars who was running over people. Me and my family took a trip and while we were on our way, we were driving in Charlottesville and we had to be very careful. I've seen on the news where a black man was trying to ask for directions and he knocked on a white person's house. The husband, he went and got the gun and chased the black man off. So, I thought that might have been, well, was it because he was black? Or did they think he was trying to, like, steal something? And I thought it was really mean. Black males and females that are getting shot. People are losing their lives and they haven't done anything. So I think we can improve that. Like he said, people are, innocent people are getting shot for no reason. We could change that. There's a whole lot more to be improved. We as Americans have to be united. We live in the United States. United means that we're all in this together but people aren't getting treated fairly because people are not doing the right thing and we should all do the right thing because we're in this together.

Heat, humidity and the World Cup

Fans have been gathering across the US, Canada and Mexico, as well as the world's TV screens, to watch the 2026 men's football World Cup kick off. However, experts have been increasingly worried about the effect of summer heat and humidity on the competing players. High levels of both have been predicted for a number of the tournament venues. Previous competitions held in similar conditions have caused difficulties for players and officials. Assistant referee Humberto Panjoj collapsed during a Copa America game in Kansas City in 2024. In a game in Miami in the same competition, Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo was substituted, complaining of dehydration and dizziness. Players also complained about conditions at the 2025 Club World Cup in the US. Both these competitions were played in cities that feature in the 2026 World Cup. Sports Medicine Australia warns of the dangers of heat exhaustion, heatstroke and dehydration from exercising in hot and humid conditions. Experts suggest that the key measure to assess risk from heat and humidity is the wet bulb globe temperature. When we sweat, it usually evaporates, cooling us down. Humid conditions make this process less effective. Wet bulb globe temperature is the minimum temperature achieved after water has evaporated. Many experts suggest that heat can be a problem for athletes if the wet bulb globe temperature is above 28C. 14 out of 16 of the World Cup venues have been forecast to have wet bulb globe temperatures above this level during normal summer afternoons. For this reason, many games have been moved to evening kick offs, and cooling breaks have been scheduled. Additionally, some stadiums have roofs and air-conditioning. However, concerns remain around evening games in Miami and Kansas City, which had been predicted to be hot and humid, and the final in New Jersey, which was scheduled for 3pm. Estimates are based on a normal summer. However, the situation would be considerably worse should there be a heatwave.

Why temperature records are being not only broken but smashed

European farmers are still counting the cost of last year's drought, which saw plummeting yields of crops like maize and corn. But France today reported it's already short of water, and the European Environment Agency expects this to become a continent-wide problem. Paradoxically, this will also lead to worse flooding as more water evaporates and then eventually falls back to Earth. The agency's report also warns there'll be about 60 days each year so hot they're dangerous, and that European healthcare needs to adapt to cope with consequent rises in cardiovascular and respiratory illness. In the longer term, disease carrying insects like the tiger mosquito will thrive in the warmer climate. Predictions like this have previously been dismissed as scaremongering, but climate scientists say the changes are actually happening even faster than they expected.

Electric motorcycles increase the income of rural women in Zimbabwe.

Aboard this custom adult-sized tricycle called the Hamba, village healthcare worker Pamhidzi Mutunya delivers medical care that may very well save lives. The Hamba made it easier to take patients to and from the hospital. Now fewer women give birth at home due to lack of transportation like it used to be. Mutunya drives an average of four people per day to a health clinic while also picking up medicine for others. She started using a Hamba last year and says women pay about fifteen dollars a month as a group to lease the ride. Hamba pilot coordinator Fadzai Mavhuna: Women in the rural areas carry the burden of carrying firewood, going to fetch water to drink and carrying school kids to school. So as Mobility for Africa, we saw that we need to lessen the burden on women. Transportation start-up Mobility for Africa runs the business side of the Hamba. Drivers say the service change their lives. We used to carry firewood on our heads for two kilometres. Now it's much easier as this tricycle has taken away the burden. Reusable batteries charged by the sun power the Hamba and fuel it for one dollar or less. It has a cruising range of about a hundred kilometers. The project is targeted to rural women, so we have noticed that it's not everyone who can afford to buy it. So we are going to sell it to those who can afford to buy it. But at the same time, we will continually see. Mobility for Africa is now in the second phase of its pilot project. The next step is going commercial where the Hamba will sell for 1,500 dollars.

The secret to a good night's sleep every night.

Hi, I'm Dr. Aarthi Vemana, co-director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Sleep Center. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on everyone's daily lives. Now, we do have more time at home to focus on sleep, but sleep is really difficult in stressful periods. So, I wanted to take a few moments to talk to you guys about having a good sleep schedule and how to maintain that sleep schedule during the quarantine period. Start off by having a good bedtime routine. And that bedtime routine doesn't have to be anything complicated, but it should be the same few steps done in the same order at the same time every night. This helps your brain realize that it's time to wind down to go to sleep. The next morning, make sure that you're waking up around the same time every day and keep yourself on a schedule. That schedule should include exercise and that exercise is best done during the daytime, if possible. At night, make sure that you're putting your screens away about an hour before you go to bed. This helps to minimize your blue light exposure and that's important because blue light can trick your brain into thinking that it's daylight outside. But more importantly during these stressful COVID-19 times, the content of what we're looking at on the screens can be very stressful and can be very anxiety provoking for young ones. So, instead of using screens, spend some time together as a family. Talk about all the good things that have happened during the day and focus on the positive. This will help to distress everyone's brains right before bedtime. If you're still having trouble, reading or guided relaxation is a great option to help focus your brain on something that's not related to COVID-19. I hope everyone stays home and that they stay healthy.

Tasting food using virtual reality

Thanksgiving Farms is 57 acres. We like to grow a little bit of the odd and unusual. So, we grow pretty much everything. The only thing we do not grow is corn. We're ladies. Corn is heavy and we're not picking it. I run the garden center part. I have 20 grow houses full of plants right now. I grow everything from petunias to Calibrachoas to tropical plants. I plant them at a certain time so that they get ready by Mother's Day. Mother's Day is our Christmas in the greenhouse industry. That's when everybody brings their mom out. They get flowers. In normal years,we have half of it sold by May 10, and then you sell the rest of it at the end of May and two weeks into June. On a glorious sunny Saturday afternoon in May, we have 75 to 100 cars in our parking lot. When I heard about the coronavirus, I went and I turned all my greenhouses down 10 degrees, just to try to get my plants in a holding pattern, because I don't know when I'm going to be able to sell them. In danger of losing, besides my sanity and the lining of my stomach. That is a horrible, horrible thing to think about. I want to be optimistic, but at the end of the day I know realistically a monetary amount, I don't know, a lot. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, a lot. This gets me through the day. My stomach, that is where my stress went. It went into my stomach. So, I'm living on Coke Zero and Tums right now. You do what you got to do. It is a very rare bird that wants to one day go, oh, I want to farm. Pretty sure you have to be born into it. To be a farmer, you have to be optimistic. You have to be a gambler. Sometimes, you have a thunderstorm that will wipe your seeds. Sometimes, you get it all the way down and you're two weeks from harvesting your field, and you get a 15-minute hailstorm that totally disintegrates everything. You just have to go, oh, OK, well let's start over. That's what you got to do or else you will never make it. One day at a time. Yep, that's all you can do. Nobody has ever prepared you for a pandemic, ever. So, I'm going to dig in deep. I'm going to probably stay up many nights trying to figure out how to get through this. But, we will. I will find a way. I'm not going to let this take away my identity of something that I have worked on my entire life. I've been in this business since I was five. I am not going to give it up to COVID-19. Believe me. That is not going to take us out. We will find a way. Just getting there is going to be the hard part.

Tasting food using virtual reality

Virtual reality's immersive experience is a sensation for the eyes and ears. Now Aerobanquets RMX will target your taste buds. It's one of the first experiments where we are mixing VR and food. At the James Beard House in New York, Mattia Casalegno has created a VR dining experience that lets guests taste food in a new way. We are so much used to eat with our own eyes, of course. I start to have expectations. With this VR experience, guests should expect the unexpected. In virtual reality, the quote unquote food is represented by abstract 3D shapes that correspond to real-life bites prepared on site. Guests can interact with these virtual shapes and forms, and then literally eat them. I think it tastes like the whistle that the wind makes blowing through a door lock on a cold autumn afternoon. Actions in the physical world correspond with those in VR via motion tracking cameras in the headset. We are able to bridge the gap between the virtual world and the real world, and what impact it has when you introduce food into this experience all of a sudden, the virtual world no longer, it felt less virtual. Having that like disconnection, but reconnection with food through this digital representation of it, made you kind of like think about flavor and texture and sensation in a different way. A feast for all of the senses.
