Today’s passage marks a turning point and sets the tone for the rest of the Gospel account of John. From this point on, he will be explaining why the Jewish leaders hated Jesus. After healing the lame man by the pool, Jesus tells him to take up his bed and walk. According to the Law of the Pharisees, moving your mat was a disgrace and a sin against God and the Sabbath. Did Jesus have the man commit a crime? And what was the man’s response when the Pharisees questioned him? Did he defend Jesus and stand up for Him? Or did he stand up for the world? In the last episode, we studied the findings from a variety of tests that were done on the Shroud of Turin to determine its authenticity. Now today, we challenge it against the most important source, the Word of God. If it does not line up with the Bible, then we know it can not be accurate. And it would appear upon first look of the accounts of the burial of Jesus that there is indeed an error between the four Gospels. But let’s see what the original language has to say. The Book of Enoch is gaining more and more popularity as people today are very intrigued by angels, demons, and the Nephilim, and Michael is often asked why this book is not included in Scriptures. Is our Earth flat or is it round? For centuries people have debated this subject. Some even say that the Bible supports the theory of a flat earth, referencing passages from Revelation, Jeremiah, and Isaiah where it mentions the “four corners of the earth.” So, is the earth indeed flat? The Shroud of Turin – the most intensively studied artifact of all time. This ancient linen cloth depicts the image of a man who we can visibly see was beaten, bore a crown of thorns, scourged, stabbed, and clearly crucified Roman style. Could this have possibly been the burial cloth of Jesus? Michael was skeptical and doubted the authenticity for years, but has further studying of the artifact changed his mind? If the Romans were responsible for the persecution and death of so many early Christians, how can one say that this ancient empire helped Christianity to flourish? In today’s lesson we meet the Roman official whose son is terminally ill. Desperate, the man asks Jesus to heal his boy but is instead softly rebuked by Jesus. The official’s faith was shallow and was dependent on witnessing Jesus perform a miracle. But Jesus asks us to have a deeper faith than that. In Joshua 11, it is recorded that Joshua and the Israelites destroyed the city of Hazor, burning it to the ground. And according to the Law of Moses, they would have destroyed and burned all the pagan idols, not leaving one untouched. Now, the site of the ancient city has been excavated, and their findings have been remarkable. Amongst the old remains they found idols that had been smashed and clearly burned. It appears this lines up with what is written in the Bible. As we read in Numbers 20, God punishes Moses for the sin he committed by stating that he would not be allowed to enter the Promised Land. Why was God so harsh with Moses? Hadn’t Moses done many things that pleased the Lord? Surely God could pardon this one sin. So why didn’t He? As Michael answers this question, we discover it doesn’t just lie in Moses’ disobedience, but in a prophecy relating to the coming Messiah. Today’s passage appears to be a contradiction as Jesus claims that He will receive no honor in one verse, but in the next He does. Is this an error in the Bible? If the Genesis account is correct, then that means that dinosaurs and man inhabited the earth at the same time. Science textbooks claim that dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago and humans evolved only two or three million years ago. So, according to their theory, man has never seen dinosaurs. According to archaeologists and many Bible scholars, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the past 50 years was made on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee at the site called Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene. During a dig, they unearthed a 1st century synagogue and at the center was this massive stone with intricate carvings engraved into it. Some of the carvings on the stone support what the Bible says about there being a temple in Jerusalem at the time of Christ. Could this also be the same synagogue where Jesus visited and taught? Where was the exact place that Jesus was questioned by the Sanhedrin and denied by Peter the night before His crucifixion? Some believe it was Caiphas’s House at the Church of St. Peter. As we kick off this new series, we start with a question that Michael is often asked, seeing as how he is a biologist. Darwinian Evolution tends to be pushed heavily in the field of biology, so a lot of people find it astonishing that Michael does not. In this episode, Michael shares how he was a Darwinian Evolutionist, but how, after studying biology, he deemed it illogical. For example, when one looks at the complexity of cells and how they all have a specific purpose, how can they think it evolved by random chance? Creation is so intricately designed that it just shouts the existence of an Intelligent Designer who assigned everything with a purpose. If there is a design, there is a Designer. Continuing with His conversation with the Samaritan woman, Jesus makes a profound statement, “I who speak to you am He.” With this statement, Jesus is also making an undisputable claim that He is indeed the Son of God. We also are reminded of Jesus’ ultimate sovereignty as He demonstrates His supernatural control over time. Verse 27 is a great reminder for us that God is over all, even time. Too often, we think of God as not being on our time schedule, but really, we are just too impatient to wait for results. A quiet night at the seashore offers a sacred pause, where the sound of the waves draws hearts into prayer and thanksgiving for time spent in God’s creation.
