Evidence 4 Faith

As we studied last week, Herod remodeled and expanded Zerubbabel’s Temple into the largest and most elaborate temple in the surrounding area. While we don’t know exactly what the temple looked like, we can form an idea based off four sources: historical records, other architectural structures built by Herod, buildings from that same period, and the archaeological evidence that they are finding on the Temple Mount. Just like a sword is most effective when wielded by two hands, our marriages are strongest when husband and wife work together with God as their center. Marriage is not easy, especially in our current society, and we must work at it each day. It would appear there is a contradiction in the Bible since in one passage it says to be still and God will fight for us, but then there is another passage where we are told to put on the “Armor of God.” So, which is true? Are we to be silent and still and let God do the work? Or are we to put on our armor and go to war? Is this truly a contradiction? Today, we find Jesus standing before the Jewish leaders in what appears to be a trial as He defends Himself against their claims of breaking the Sabbath and committing blasphemy. As with their traditions concerning the Law, and as we can see is recorded in Deuteronomy, a legal case must have at least two to three witnesses present during a trial. Jesus supplies five. As we covered in the last lesson, Zerubbabel’s Temple, or the Second Temple as it is sometimes called, was finished in 516 BC. But after the Romans conquered Jerusalem, Herod the Great decided to completely refurbish it and enlarge it to be one of the most beautiful and largest Temples in the entire Roman Empire. Was Jesus incorrect when He was sharing the Parable of the Mustard Seed that is recorded in Matthew 13:31-32? He claims that the mustard seed is the smallest of all the seeds and that it will grow into a tree that is larger than all the plants. But though the seed is indeed quite small, it will only grow to a tree about eight feet tall. Is this an error in the Bible? Or is there a reasonable explanation as to why Jesus said this? In today’s passage Jesus references four resurrections that will occur: the spiritual resurrection of lost sinners, the physical resurrection of Himself, and the final resurrections of the saved and unsaved. As we have been studying chapter 5, it is becoming quite clear that Jesus was stating that He and the Father are equal – they are of one mind, have perfect harmony, and are of the same essence. In today’s passage, we read that Jesus states that He is the Judge, and as we know from Genesis and Psalms, God is the Judge of the earth. So once again, Jesus points out His equality with the Father and that they both shall receive honor. But Jesus also gives us a beautiful promise and a pardon from our judgement. In our last episode, we focused on the time of Solomon’s Temple, however that temple met its destruction in 586 BC when the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar destroyed it. Today, we will uncover the history in the 566-year period between its destruction and the rebuilding of the Temple by Herod the Great. A lot of Christians believe that every illness is due to some uncommitted sin in one’s life and God will not heal them until they have confessed that sin. Is this true? Jesus was not just a wise teacher or a prophet, He was, and is, the Son of God. In today’s passage we see Jesus defending this claim. His equality with God is equal in person, works, and even power to raise people from the dead. He can do all things that the Father can do and cannot do what the Father cannot do – sin. God, and therefore Jesus, cannot do anything that would go against their character of being pure and holy. In this week’s episode, we travel back to the time of the 10th Century BC, when Solomon’s Temple was constructed and stood as a holy place for the Jewish people. Some critics believe that the Jews never had a temple in Jerusalem, but what has been discovered by the Temple Mount Sifting Project contradicts that claim and supports what we read in the Bible. Some people struggle with the accuracy of the New Testament, while some don’t believe it at all and treat it like another ancient mythological tale. Others like some parts of it, while disliking other parts. And some believe that it is not trustworthy due to all the supposed contradictions that we find in the ancient manuscripts. They state that since all the copies don’t align word for word, they are not to be trusted at all. Do the ancient manuscripts contradict one another? Are there discrepancies between them? Many critics say that Jesus never claimed to be God, but in today’s passage, He does indeed make that claim. Jesus is equal to God and He is the Son of God. We know this to be true by observing the reaction of the Jewish leaders and Jesus’ disciples and by studying the meaning of the ancient Eastern language. The past few lessons our studies have focused on the story of Jesus healing the lame man on the Sabbath, breaking the man-made laws of the Mishnah. In today’s passage, Jesus declares that God is always working and He Himself is God. God never ceases to work – He is constantly sustaining all of Creation. At first, the once lame man from Bethesda did not know who it was that had healed him. When the Jews asked him, he could not give them a name. Located in Jerusalem, the Temple Mount resides on what used to be known as Mount Moriah and over the years it has been a place of many historical events. Throughout history it has changed hands many times and today is a place of great importance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Due to all the history that is stored there, laws were put in place that banned any excavating from taking place at the site. But in 1999, an illegal excavation began which involved the careless removal of piles of dirt from under the Temple Mount. To preserve the relics that were found there, The Temple Mount Sifting Project began. Since then, 85 percent of the debris has been sifted through, though much of it remains to be studied. Today’s passage marks a turning point and sets the tone for the rest of the Gospel account of John. From this point on, he will be explaining why the Jewish leaders hated Jesus. In the last episode, we studied the findings from a variety of tests that were done on the Shroud of Turin to determine its authenticity. Now today, we challenge it against the most important source, the Word of God. If it does not line up with the Bible, then we know it can not be accurate. The Shroud of Turin – the most intensively studied artifact of all time. This ancient linen cloth depicts the image of a man who we can visibly see was beaten, bore a crown of thorns, scourged, stabbed, and clearly crucified Roman style. In today’s lesson we meet the Roman official whose son is terminally ill. Desperate, the man asks Jesus to heal his boy but is instead softly rebuked by Jesus. The official’s faith was shallow and was dependent on witnessing Jesus perform a miracle. But Jesus asks us to have a deeper faith than that. In Joshua 11, it is recorded that Joshua and the Israelites destroyed the city of Hazor, burning it to the ground. And according to the Law of Moses, they would have destroyed and burned all the pagan idols, not leaving one untouched. Now, the site of the ancient city has been excavated, and their findings have been remarkable. Amongst the old remains they found idols that had been smashed and clearly burned. It appears this lines up with what is written in the Bible. As we read in Numbers 20, God punishes Moses for the sin he committed by stating that he would not be allowed to enter the Promised Land. Why was God so harsh with Moses? Hadn’t Moses done many things that pleased the Lord? Surely God could pardon this one sin. So why didn’t He? If the Genesis account is correct, then that means that dinosaurs and man inhabited the earth at the same time. Science textbooks claim that dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago and humans evolved only two or three million years ago. So, according to their theory, man has never seen dinosaurs. According to archaeologists and many Bible scholars, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the past 50 years was made on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee at the site called Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene. During a dig, they unearthed a 1st century synagogue and at the center was this massive stone with intricate carvings engraved into it. Some of the carvings on the stone support what the Bible says about there being a temple in Jerusalem at the time of Christ. Could this also be the same synagogue where Jesus visited and taught? Many people have heard of King David, King Solomon, and even King Hezekiah, but the king who claims the title of having the longest reign, is unfamiliar to most. Today’s artifact is actually a location and Michael’s favorite place to visit in Jerusalem due to its significance. Where was the exact place that Jesus was questioned by the Sanhedrin and denied by Peter the night before His crucifixion? Some believe it was Caiphas’s House at the Church of St. Peter. However, that site does not fit the time, biblical account, nor the correct location. Perhaps it was instead the Palatial Mansion that was excavated in the late 1900’s near the Temple Mount? Our artifact for today is another bulla that was discovered in 2019 at a dig in Jerusalem and inscribed on it is the name Nathan-Melech. This person was only mentioned once in the Bible, but according to the Scriptures, he was a royal official of King Josiah, son of the evil King Amon.
