Menopause Rescue

Women may spend over a decade of their lives experiencing symptoms around menopause transition, while just over 10% of women’s healthcare professionals feel comfortable treating menopause. The conversation around menopause has evolved beyond hot flashes and night sweats to include how hormonal changes affect bone, brain, mood, heart and mental health. Midlife women can feel like they are drowning in symptoms. Many of them are not well served by health care providers who haven’t updated their knowledge on hormones since the WHI 20 years ago and influencers who are peddling potions and lotions which may not be effective. Menopause Rescue is here to give you a hand up. I’m a board certified gynecologist with certification in menopausal medicine as well as functional medicine. My goal is to revolutionize the menopause dialogue, using the transition as a spark to ignite health promotion. Secondly, we will discuss solutions for low libido, weight gain, mood changes, brain fog, hot flashes

    MCAS, Histamine & Hormones

If hormone replacement therapy made you feel worse instead of better, histamine may be the missing piece. In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson explains how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone affect mast cells and histamine, why some women experience worsening symptoms after starting HRT, and how mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) can sometimes mimic menopause. You'll learn how to recognize common signs of histamine-related reactions, understand why diagnosis can be challenging, and explore practical treatment strategies, including medications, supplements, dietary changes, and nervous system support. Dr. Watson shares a functional medicine approach to helping women successfully navigate menopause while minimizing mast cell and histamine symptoms. Quotes "Estrogen destabilizes mast cells, and mast cells contain histamine—that's where this connection is coming from." — Dr. Polly Watson  "A misinformed clinician might make things worse by increasing estrogen when the real problem is mast cell activation." — Dr. Polly Watson  "If hormone replacement therapy made you feel worse instead of better, don't give up—we may simply need a different strategy." — Dr. Polly Watson    Resources Stress vs Trauma Body Responses   Connect with Dr. Polly Watson Website: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast Resources: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-resources New Patient: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/new-patient-consultation Instagram: https://instagram.com/hormonewellnessmd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hormonewellnessmd YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG4Tw8oHGR_6wBZmXrTu9xA   Disclaimer: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-disclaimer

The Midlife Muscle Blueprint: Strength Training for Menopause and Longevity

Are you working out but still struggling to build muscle? Do you feel like your metabolism has slowed down, your energy is fading, and your body just isn't responding the way it used to? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by functional medicine practitioner Kristin Oja, DNP, to explore why muscle is one of the most important predictors of health, longevity, and resilience during perimenopause and menopause. Together, they share practical, evidence-based strategies to help women build strength, improve metabolism, prevent burnout, and support healthy aging through sustainable lifestyle changes. 🌸 Muscle is one of the greatest predictors of longevity, metabolic health, bone strength, and independence as we age. 🌸 Progressive overload—not simply exercising—is the key to building muscle and maintaining a healthy metabolism. 🌸 Recovery matters just as much as your workout, and quality sleep, stress management, and proper nutrition are essential for muscle growth. 🌸 Eating enough protein and whole-food carbohydrates helps fuel your body, improve recovery, and support strength gains. 🌸 Chronic stress, burnout, poor sleep, and under-fueling can make it harder to build muscle and may contribute to hormone imbalances. 🌸 Small daily habits like hydration, balanced meals, mindful breathing, and strength training can have a lasting impact on your health. 🌸 It's never too late to get stronger, but starting before menopause can make the transition easier and help you stay healthier for years to come. If you're feeling frustrated by weight changes, declining energy, or the physical changes of midlife, you're not alone. This episode offers practical, realistic strategies to help you build strength, protect your metabolism, and approach menopause with confidence. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Somatic Therapy Explained: Trauma, Chronic Stress & Your Body

In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by massage therapist and somatic practitioner Audrey Burke to explore how the nervous system influences both physical and emotional health. Together, they discuss how chronic stress, trauma, and prolonged survival mode can contribute to symptoms such as digestive issues, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, chronic pain, and other persistent health concerns—even when medical testing appears normal. Audrey explains how somatic therapy differs from traditional talk therapy by focusing on the body's sensations and nervous system regulation rather than simply processing thoughts or revisiting past experiences. The conversation explores the science behind the gut-brain connection, developmental trauma, co-regulation, the vagus nerve, and why helping the body feel safe is often an essential step toward healing. Whether you're navigating chronic illness, recovering from trauma, or simply feeling stuck in a constant state of stress, this conversation offers practical, compassionate insights into the powerful connection between the body and the mind. Quotes "With somatic therapy, we don't actually have to go back to the original event in order to heal from it." — Audrey Burke  "We're not just looking at our thoughts or emotions, but also noticing what's happening in the body's experience." — Audrey Burke  "Maybe you don't need another five supplements. Lipoprotein(a) & Menopause: The Hidden Heart Risk Marker

Could your cholesterol and heart disease risk be changing during menopause without you realizing it? Have you been told hormone therapy protects your heart, but wondered what the research actually says? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by integrative cardiologist Dr. Regina Druz to unpack the complicated relationship between lipoprotein(a), menopause, cardiovascular disease risk, and hormone therapy in women. Together, they explain what current research shows about genetics, inflammation, cholesterol markers, and emerging treatment options so women can make more informed decisions about their long-term health. 🌸 Lipoprotein(a), also called Lp(a), is a largely genetic cholesterol particle linked to higher cardiovascular disease risk. 🌸 Women can experience spikes in Lp(a) during pregnancy and menopause, which may affect long-term heart health. 🌸 Oral estrogen may lower Lp(a) levels, but it can also increase inflammation and blood clot risk. 🌸 Transdermal hormone therapy appears safer for cardiovascular risk, but research is still evolving. 🌸 Exercise, sleep, nutrition, and muscle health remain some of the most important tools for protecting heart health during midlife. 🌸 Advanced testing like ApoB, coronary calcium scores, and genetic risk assessments may help personalize prevention strategies. 🌸 New treatments like PCSK9 inhibitors and future gene-editing therapies may change how elevated Lp(a) is managed in the coming years. If you’ve been confused by mixed messages around cholesterol, menopause, and hormone therapy, this episode offers a more balanced and evidence-informed perspective. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what we know, what we still don’t know, and practical ways to support your long-term cardiovascular health. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Mast Cell Activation Syndrome in Midlife Women: Symptoms, Histamine & Hormones

Have you ever wondered why symptoms like bloating, migraines, anxiety, rashes, dizziness, or food sensitivities seem to get worse during perimenopause? Have you been told your symptoms are “normal” even though your body feels like it’s reacting to everything? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis NP-C break down mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), histamine intolerance, and the growing connection between immune dysregulation, hormones, and women’s health in midlife. They explain how these conditions may contribute to symptoms across multiple body systems and share practical strategies to help calm inflammation, support the nervous system, and improve quality of life. 🌸 Mast cells are part of the immune system and can affect the skin, gut, brain, heart, and nervous system when they become overactive. 🌸 Histamine intolerance and mast cell activation syndrome are related, but they are not the same condition. 🌸 Hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can trigger or worsen mast cell symptoms in some women. 🌸 Symptoms like migraines, IBS, anxiety, flushing, heart palpitations, dizziness, and fatigue may all be connected through immune dysregulation. 🌸 Nervous system regulation, stress reduction, and trauma-informed healing can play a major role in calming mast cell activity. 🌸 Common triggers can include infections, mold exposure, alcohol, certain foods, environmental chemicals, and chronic stress. 🌸 Treatment options may include low-histamine nutrition, antihistamines, supplements, mast cell stabilizers, and lifestyle changes that support healing. If you’ve been struggling with symptoms that don’t seem to fit neatly into one diagnosis, this episode will help you better understand what may be happening in your body. Strength Training, Pelvic Floor Therapy & BRCA: What Women Need to Know in Midlife

Are you avoiding strength training because your joints hurt or you’re afraid of getting injured? Have you ever wondered if pelvic floor symptoms, painful sex, or chronic tightness are connected to stress and movement patterns in the body? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by physical therapist Dr. Amanda Fultineer to discuss strength training, pelvic floor therapy, menopause health, and recovery after preventive surgery. Together, they explain how movement, mobility, and personalized physical therapy can help women build strength, reduce pain, improve function, and feel more confident in their bodies through every stage of midlife. 🌸 Strength training supports bone density, metabolic health, mobility, and long-term independence for women in midlife. 🌸 Pelvic floor dysfunction is often connected to breathing patterns, stress, posture, hip mobility, and muscle tension throughout the body. 🌸 Many women avoid exercise because of pain, but the right physical therapy approach can help modify movements safely instead of avoiding them completely. 🌸 Pelvic floor therapy involves far more than internal work and can include strength training, mobility exercises, breathing techniques, and education. 🌸 Amanda shares her personal experience with the BRCA2 mutation, preventive mastectomy, and navigating changing recommendations around surgical menopause and hormone therapy. 🌸 Women recovering from mastectomy or pelvic surgery often benefit from proactive physical therapy to restore strength, shoulder mobility, and quality of life. 🌸 The conversation emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy, individualized care, and helping women understand that pain and dysfunction should not simply be accepted as “normal.” If you’ve been struggling with pain, pelvic floor symptoms, fear of exercise, or uncertainty about how to stay strong in midlife, this episode offers practical guidance and reassurance that there are effective, evidence-based ways to support your body and improve your quality of life. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Inflammaging & Menopause: The Hidden Driver of Weight Gain, Fatigue, and Chronic Disease

Are you doing all the “right” things but still struggling with fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, or rising cholesterol in midlife? Have you wondered why hormones alone don’t always fix how you feel? In this episode of the Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis, NP-C explore inflammaging—chronic low-grade inflammation that accelerates during perimenopause and menopause and impacts everything from metabolism to heart health. They explain how lifestyle habits, gut health, sleep, hormones, nutrition, and recovery all work together to help women reduce inflammation, improve energy, and support healthier aging. 🌸 Inflammaging is chronic low-grade inflammation that quietly increases as we age and can affect the brain, heart, metabolism, joints, and immune system. 🌸 Hormone therapy can be incredibly helpful during menopause, but it works best when paired with strong lifestyle foundations. 🌸 Gut health and microbiome diversity play a major role in regulating inflammation and immune function. 🌸 Simple lab tests like CRP, ferritin, and hemoglobin A1c can provide important clues about hidden inflammation and metabolic health. 🌸 Overtraining without enough recovery can increase inflammation and leave women feeling more exhausted instead of energized. 🌸 A plant-forward, fiber-rich diet supports healthier aging by improving gut health, cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammation. 🌸 Small, sustainable habits around sleep, movement, stress management, and nutrition can meaningfully improve long-term health and vitality. If you feel overwhelmed by conflicting health advice in midlife, this episode offers a grounded, practical approach to aging well without perfection or expensive testing. You’ll walk away with clear, realistic strategies to help you feel stronger, healthier, and more empowered in the second half of life. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS): Symptoms, IBS, POTS & Why It’s Often Missed

Have you been told your symptoms are “normal” or “all in your head”? Do you struggle with IBS, migraines, dizziness, or unexplained inflammation that no one can connect? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson sits down with Dr. Amy Doherty to unpack Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and why it’s finally gaining recognition in conventional medicine. Together, they explain how mast cells, histamine sensitivity, and nervous system overload can drive chronic symptoms—and what you can do about it. 🌸 Mast Cell Activation Syndrome exists on a spectrum and doesn’t always look like a dramatic allergic reaction. 🌸 Histamine receptors are found throughout the body, which is why MCAS can affect the gut, brain, heart, skin, and hormones. 🌸 Many patients with IBS, POTS, migraines, or chronic sinus issues may actually have underlying mast cell dysfunction. 🌸 Lab testing can be tricky, and clinical questionnaires are often more practical and accessible. 🌸 Treatment may include antihistamines, supplements like quercetin, dietary changes, and trigger avoidance. 🌸 Regulating the unconscious nervous system is one of the most powerful tools for calming immune overactivation. 🌸 Healing is not about “shame 2.0,” but about helping the body feel safe again. If you’ve felt dismissed or confused by symptoms that cross multiple systems, this episode offers validation, science-based clarity, and practical next steps to help you move forward. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Cardiovascular Risk in Midlife Women: Insulin Resistance, Inflammation & Heart Health Part 2

Are you wondering if you really need a statin? Have you been handed a prescription but never fully understood your true cardiovascular risk? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis, NP-C, break down the complexities of statins, cholesterol guidelines, and cardiovascular risk in midlife women. They explain how to understand your personal risk profile so you can make informed, confident decisions about medication, lifestyle, and long-term heart health. 🌸 Early statin research had limitations, including selective reporting and short study durations that may not reflect decades of use. 🌸 Statins clearly lower LDL cholesterol, but the difference between relative risk and absolute risk reduction matters when evaluating true benefit. 🌸 Current guidelines identify specific groups who benefit most from statins, including those with established heart disease, very high LDL, or diabetes. 🌸 Risk calculators, coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, and the MESA arterial age tool can help personalize decision-making. 🌸 Advanced biomarkers like ApoB and lipoprotein(a) provide deeper insight beyond a standard cholesterol panel. 🌸 Lifestyle changes—like improving blood sugar, strength training, and nutrition—can significantly reduce cardiovascular risk, especially in lower-risk patients. If you’re in perimenopause or menopause and want clarity instead of confusion about heart health, this episode gives you practical tools and better questions to bring to your next appointment. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Cardiovascular Risk in Midlife Women: Insulin Resistance, Inflammation & Heart Health Part 1

Are you being told your cholesterol is “normal” but still worried about your heart health? Wondering if supplements are enough—or if you should consider a statin?   In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis, NP-C, break down cardiovascular risk in midlife women and explain how to interpret labs beyond standard cholesterol numbers. They share a clear, practical framework to help you understand your true risk and decide when lifestyle, supplements, or medication may be appropriate.   🌸 LDL alone does not tell the full story—markers like ApoB, Lp(a), fasting insulin, triglycerides, homocysteine, and uric acid offer deeper insight into cardiovascular risk. 🌸 “Normal” lab ranges are based on population averages, not optimal health. 🌸 Insulin resistance is one of the biggest drivers of heart disease—and one area where you have real agency. 🌸 Inflammation and oxidative stress quietly increase cardiovascular risk, especially during perimenopause and menopause. 🌸 Lifestyle habits like strength training, blood sugar balance, and quality sleep form the foundation of prevention. 🌸 Supplements can support specific patterns of risk, but they cannot replace movement and healthy habits. 🌸 Statins have a role in certain high-risk patients, especially when plaque is already present.   If you’re a midlife woman trying to make sense of your labs and protect your long-term health, this episode offers clarity, context, and practical next steps. The Physical Therapy Perspective on Menopausal Hip Pain: Gluteal Tendinopathy & Movement Patterns

Is your hip pain getting blamed on aging—or brushed off with “just take ibuprofen”? Have you noticed lateral hip pain showing up during perimenopause or menopause without a clear explanation? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by Dr. Bridget Ochuko to explore menopausal hip pain and the often-overlooked diagnosis of gluteal tendinopathy. Together, they explain how combining hormone care with movement-based physical therapy can reduce pain, restore function, and protect long-term mobility. 🌸 Gluteal tendinopathy is a common cause of lateral hip pain in menopause and is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed as aging. 🌸 Declining estrogen can weaken tendons, increase inflammation, and slow healing in the musculoskeletal system. 🌸 Hip pain does not always show up on both sides, even when hormonal changes are systemic. 🌸 Movement patterns, sleep positions, footwear choices, and prolonged sitting all influence hip and pelvic stability. 🌸 Weak glutes often lead to an overactive pelvic floor, creating a cycle of pain and dysfunction. 🌸 Physical therapy can serve as first-line care, helping patients avoid unnecessary imaging, medications, and delays in treatment. If you’re dealing with persistent hip pain in midlife—or feeling unheard in the healthcare system—this episode offers clarity, validation, and practical next steps to help you move with less pain and more confidence. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Sustainable Weight Loss: A Metabolic Health Approach (Part 2)

Are you gaining weight in midlife even though you haven’t changed how you eat or exercise? Do you feel like your body suddenly stopped responding to all the things that used to work? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by Kate Willis NP-C to unpack why weight loss in perimenopause and menopause is far more complex than calories alone. Together, they explain how understanding hormones, metabolism, and inflammation can help women create sustainable, realistic progress instead of constant frustration. 🌸 Hormonal shifts in perimenopause and menopause change body composition, increasing fat gain while reducing lean muscle. 🌸 Declining estrogen can worsen insulin resistance, making weight gain more likely even without lifestyle changes. 🌸 Gut health and fiber intake play a major role in appetite control, inflammation, and blood sugar balance. 🌸 Strength training and adequate protein are essential to protect muscle and metabolic health during midlife. 🌸 Chronic stress, poor sleep, and elevated cortisol can stall weight loss despite “doing everything right.” 🌸 GLP-1 medications and hormone therapy are tools—not shortcuts—and work best when layered onto strong lifestyle habits. Sustainable Weight Loss: A Metabolic Health Approach Part 1

Are you gaining weight in midlife even though you’re eating well and exercising? Do you feel tired, hungry, and stuck no matter what you try? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and Nurse Practitioner Kate Willis discuss sustainable weight loss in perimenopause and menopause and why midlife weight gain is more complex than most people realize. They break down the science behind insulin resistance, hormones, stress, and metabolism—and explain practical steps that actually work. 🌸 Midlife weight gain is often driven by hormonal shifts, muscle loss, and changes in metabolic rate—not just calories. 🌸 Insulin resistance can increase belly fat, hunger, and fatigue, even when blood sugar looks “normal.” 🌸 Strength training and adequate protein are essential to improve insulin sensitivity and protect muscle. 🌸 Prioritizing protein, healthy fats, and fiber helps stabilize blood sugar and reduce cravings. 🌸 GLP-1 medications and metformin can be helpful tools when layered onto strong lifestyle foundations. 🌸 Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can worsen insulin resistance and impact thyroid function. 🌸 Sleep, sunlight exposure, and simple nervous system practices can improve metabolic health over time. Sleep Apnea in Menopause: The Hidden Cause of Fatigue, Brain Fog, and Hormone Imbalance

Are you exhausted even though you’re doing everything right? Still dealing with brain fog, weight gain, or poor sleep despite hormone therapy? In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by dentist Dr. Arend Klooster to explore the powerful connection between sleep apnea and hormonal changes in midlife women. Together, they explain how identifying and treating sleep-disordered breathing can unlock better energy, clearer thinking, and more effective hormone balance. 🌸 Sleep apnea is far more common in midlife and postmenopausal women than most people realize, and it’s often missed or misdiagnosed. 🌸 Poor sleep and low oxygen at night can drive high cortisol, insulin resistance, fatigue, and stubborn weight gain. 🌸 Hormone therapy alone cannot fix symptoms if sleep apnea is disrupting deep, restorative sleep. 🌸 Many women with sleep apnea don’t snore or feel “sleepy,” but instead experience anxiety, brain fog, and low energy. 🌸 Home sleep studies make screening easier and more accessible than ever. 🌸 Oral appliances can be an effective, comfortable alternative for women who cannot tolerate CPAP machines. Life After Ovarian Cancer: Navigating Surgical Menopause, Hormone Blockers, and Healing

Have you ever felt dismissed by doctors even though you knew something was wrong? Or struggled to feel like yourself again after a major health crisis? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson sits down with Jennifer Calogero to discuss her journey through ovarian cancer, surgical menopause, and long-term recovery. Together, they explore practical ways to advocate for your health, navigate hormonal upheaval, and support healing of both the body and mind. 🌸 Low-grade ovarian cancer is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, making self-advocacy a critical part of survival. 🌸 Surgical menopause can feel like falling off a hormonal cliff, affecting sleep, cognition, mood, and identity. 🌸 Cancer recovery doesn’t end when treatment stops—mental health and nervous system healing matter deeply. 🌸 Somatic therapy and breathwork can help regulate stress, process trauma, and reconnect with the body. 🌸 Open communication with medical providers can improve care but often requires persistence and clarity. 🌸 Community support beyond the medical system plays a vital role in long-term healing and resilience. In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and Dr. Mary Wendel dive into the complexities of women's hair loss, exploring its causes and effective treatments. They emphasize the importance of a personalized approach to finding solutions that work. 🌸 Many women experience hair loss due to hormonal changes, stress, and lifestyle factors. 🌸 Personalized medical histories and expert evaluations are crucial for accurate diagnosis. 🌸 Treatments like minoxidil, laser therapy, and PRP can effectively address hair loss. 🌸 Chemical exposure from hair products can contribute to hair thinning. 🌸 Trusting your instincts is important; seek professional advice if you notice significant changes. 🌸 Hair loss is often a symptom of underlying health issues that need to be addressed. 🌸 Starting treatment early can prevent further hair loss and improve outcomes. Breaking Down Bone Health: The Role of Nutrition, Exercise, and REMS Technology (Part 2)

Are you being told your bones are “fine” but still worried about fractures? Have you wondered whether bone density scans actually tell the whole story about your bone health? In this episode of the Hormone Wellness MD Podcast, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by orthopedic surgeon and bone health expert Dr. Andrew Bush to explore how we truly measure bone strength and fracture risk. Together, they explain why focusing on structure, muscle, and prevention—not just numbers—can help you protect your bones long before problems start. 🌸 Bone density does not always equal bone strength, and a “normal” scan does not guarantee low fracture risk. 🌸 Newer tools like fragility scores look at bone structure, not just density, to better predict fractures. 🌸 Bone loss can begin in perimenopause, making early screening and awareness critical. 🌸 Exercise, especially resistance training, is the only proven way to build healthy, physiologic bone. 🌸 Hormones and supplements support bone health but cannot replace the effects of muscle and movement. 🌸 Understanding absolute versus relative risk helps patients make clearer, more informed treatment decisions. If you’re in midlife, navigating menopause, or trying to prevent osteoporosis rather than react to it, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance rooted in real-world medicine. 📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course 🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina or Alabama? Breaking Down Bone Health: The Role of Nutrition, Exercise, and REMS Technology (Part 1)

Have you been told your bone density is “normal” but still worry about fractures? Are you confused about whether a DEXA scan really tells you the whole story about your bone health?   In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson is joined by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Bush to break down bone health in midlife and menopause and explain why traditional bone density testing may fall short. Together, they explore a more accurate, modern approach to understanding fracture risk and protecting your bones long term.   🌸 Many fractures happen in people with “normal” DEXA scans, showing density alone doesn’t tell the full story. 🌸 Bone health reflects overall health, including nutrition, exercise, inflammation, and hormones. 🌸 Muscle strength plays a major role in determining bone strength. 🌸 Arthritis and bone spurs can falsely elevate DEXA results and mask weak bone. 🌸 REMS is a radiation-free ultrasound technology that evaluates bone structure and fragility risk. 🌸 Knowing whether your bones are strong or fragile matters more than focusing on a T-score alone.   If you’re a midlife woman trying to prevent fractures, stay active, and make informed health decisions, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical insight to help you take control of your bone health with confidence.   📘 Try our 10-minute new patient intro course: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course   🩺 Looking for Personalized Hormone Care in North Carolina? Pelvic Health and Menopause: Culturally Competent Care and the Power of Pelvic PT

Are you worried that your menopause symptoms aren’t being taken seriously—or that your experience as a woman of color isn’t reflected in the research? Have you ever wondered why something so “natural” can feel so overwhelming, lonely, and dismissed?    In this episode of Menopause Rescue, host Dr. Polly Watson sits down with pelvic floor physical therapist Dr. Bridget Ochuko to unpack how menopause, structural racism, and access to care collide for women in midlife. Together, they show how understanding your body, your risks, and your options can transform menopause from something you silently endure into a stage of life you navigate with knowledge, agency, and support.   🌸 Menopause is a natural process, but that doesn’t mean women should be expected to suffer in silence or accept miserable symptoms as their fate. 🌸 Dr. Watson and Dr. Ochuko explain how most medical research was done on white men, leaving women—especially women of color—without accurate guidance for diagnosis, treatment, and symptom patterns. 🌸 The episode exposes how historical abuses like the Tuskegee syphilis study, Henrietta Lacks’ story, and non-consensual surgeries on enslaved Black women still shape distrust and inequities in gynecologic care today. 🌸 You’ll learn how menopause symptoms can show up differently across races—such as earlier onset, more severe symptoms, and more joint and muscle pain—and why delayed treatment raises long-term risks like high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. 🌸 Dr. Ochuko breaks down what culturally competent care really means, including seeing each patient as a whole person, listening to lived experience, and understanding how race, stress, income, and history affect health. 🌸 The conversation gives women concrete advocacy tools: how to “interview” providers, switch when you’re not being heard, and insist that your symptoms and quality of life are taken seriously. 🌸 You’ll also hear why pelvic floor physical therapy is a powerful, often-missing piece of menopause care—helping with leaking, pain with sex, constipation, and reconnecting you to your body with trauma-informed, patient-led support.   If you feel dismissed, confused, or alone in midlife, this conversation reminds you that your symptoms are real, your story matters, and you deserve thorough, respectful care. The Midlife Metabolic Reset: Understanding Cardiometabolic Health in Menopause (Part 2)

Description In this episode of Menopause Rescue, Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis explore the vital components of cardiometabolic health, with a particular focus on deciphering both basic and advanced lab tests. They cover the nuances of lipid panels, the impact of triglycerides, and the influence of thyroid disease on cardiovascular health. The discussion extends to inflammation markers like C-reactive protein and the critical role of insulin resistance. Delving deeper, they shed light on advanced lipid markers such as APO-B and APO-A1, and the importance of LDL particle size in evaluating cardiovascular risk. This episode underscores the importance of a holistic health strategy for women in midlife to enhance their cardiometabolic well-being.   Quotes “Diets high in sugar, saturated fat, or simple carbohydrates, alcohol use, thyroid disease, and inactivity can all raise triglycerides.” - Kate Willis NP-C “High-sensitivity CRP is a general marker for inflammation. Anything causing inflammation, short- or long-term, can raise it.”   - Kate Willis NP-C “Fasting insulin around five or less is ideal. Lab normals go much higher, but that doesn’t mean they’re optimal.” - Kate Willis NP-C “If someone's LP(a) is high, that’s their ticket to see a cardiologist—it’s an independent causal factor for cardiovascular disease.” - Dr. Polly Watson “Symptoms of hypothyroidism overlap with perimenopause and menopause… If you’re only treating one spoke of the wheel, what else are we missing?”   - Dr. Polly Watson Resources   Connect with Dr. Polly Watson and Kate Willis NP-C Website: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast Resources: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-resources New Patient: https://hormonewellnessmdacademy.teachable.com/p/are-we-a-good-fit-new-patient-welcome-course Instagram: https://instagram.com/hormonewellnessmd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hormonewellnessmd YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG4Tw8oHGR_6wBZmXrTu9xA   Disclaimer: https://hormonewellnessmd.com/podcast-disclaimer   Hashtags #menopauserescue #podcastepisode #podcastrecommendations  #hormonereplacementtherapy #medication #perimenopause #womenshealth #menopausesociety #hormonalhealth #midlife #wellness #healthcare #sexualhealth #menopausemanagement

The Midlife Metabolic Reset: Understanding Cardiometabolic Health in Menopause (Part 1)

Are you wondering why your body seems to change during midlife even when your habits haven’t? Do you feel unsure whether your “normal” labs are actually telling the full story of your health? In this episode, Dr. Polly Watson and nurse practitioner Kate Willis break down how menopause, metabolism, and heart health are connected. Together, they show how understanding your labs, lifestyle, and hormones can help you stay healthier and stronger through midlife. 🌸 Many women experience rising cholesterol and blood pressure in menopause even without changing their diet or exercise. 🌸 Triglycerides can reveal early metabolic problems long before blood sugar becomes abnormal. 🌸 Stress alone can spike blood sugar levels, even without eating any food. 🌸 Alcohol intake as low as eight drinks per week can raise heart disease risk by 45% in midlife women. 🌸 Whole-food proteins, leafy greens, and fiber-rich meals support heart and metabolic health better than processed protein snacks. 🌸 Continuous glucose monitors help women understand how foods, sleep, and stress affect their blood sugar in real time. 🌸 A history of gestational diabetes, PCOS, or early menopause increases long-term cardiovascular risk and should be part of every woman’s health plan. ABOUT THIS SHOW
