#108 - Doing Too Much, Feeling Everything: Dr. Danielle Griffin on Breaking the Overachiever Burnout Cycle

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Danielle Griffin — somatic exercise therapist, certified hypnotherapist, and former higher education researcher — to talk about something most high achievers never want to admit: the body keeps score, and burnout doesn't just live in your mind. Danielle walks me through how years of unprocessed workplace stress, grief, and pressure physically manifested in her own life — and how she discovered somatic healing and hypnotherapy as the entry points that finally allowed her to change. What I love about her approach is how accessible it is. We're not talking about hour-long meditation sessions or clearing your schedule. We're talking about 90-second pauses between Zoom calls that actually shift your nervous system. We also get into the workplace mental health conversation — why giving employees a meditation app isn't enough, what organizations are getting wrong about burnout, and why most people don't unwind until day three of a five-day vacation (and then immediately crash back into stress the moment they return). Danielle also shares how her Rise and Renew retreat came out of watching people try to rest without the tools to actually do it — and why having guidance matters more than having willpower. And yes — we do a live 90-second somatic practice in the episode. You'll feel it. If you're a high achiever who's been pushing through, telling yourself you don't have time to pause, or wondering why vacations aren't fixing things — this one's for you. #107 - Why Team USA Athletes Keep Losing Their Lives - With Team USA Bobsledder - William Person

In this episode of the State of Mind Mental Health Podcast, I sit down with William Person — a 9-year member of Team USA's Olympic bobsled program and the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit fighting to protect athletes from CTE. William walks me through the cost of nine years and an estimated 22,000 bobsled rides on the human brain — and what happens when an entire roster of teammates starts taking their own lives. He shares the story of the friend who called him speaking gibberish before hanging himself in his family's factory, the autopsy that revealed Stage 4 CTE, and the decade William spent living on his living room floor, praying for death without ever having the language for what was wrong with him. He opens up about the New York Times article that finally diagnosed him when his doctors couldn't, the day Joe Namath's hyperbaric oxygen video changed his life, and the one hour in a chamber that gave him six straight days of clarity after ten years of cognitive fog. William is now building the American Post-Concussion Wellness Center — a free, public-facing treatment facility for veterans, athletes, and anyone suffering from undiagnosed brain trauma. #106 - Iran Used Children as Minesweepers - The Story of Iranian Resistance to Authoritarian Theocracy

I sit down with Zolal Habibi, a longtime member of the Iranian Resistance and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), for a conversation that pulls back the curtain on a country most of us only see in headlines. In this episode she walks me through the parts of Iran's reality that rarely make it to North American media: tens of thousands of political prisoners executed in a single summer, tens of thousands children used as minesweepers during the Iran-Iraq war, 47 years of women refusing to give in, and the resistance units operating inside the country today. She also speaks plainly about why appeasement has failed, why military intervention is not the answer, and what a secular democratic republic in Iran could actually look like. If you have ever wondered how people stay grounded in the face of overwhelming odds, or what it really means to live for something bigger than yourself, this one is for you. #105 - Talent Moves Needles. Mindset Moves Mountains With Professional Athlete Mindset Coach Sandy Cohan

Sandy Cohen on Mindset, Belief, and Why Talent Is Overrated Sandy Cohen is a professional mindset development coach, author of three books, and a former hockey player turned speaker who works with elite athletes, CEOs, and high performers. In this conversation, Sandy breaks down why mindset is the foundation of everything — and why so many people are building on sand. We get into the difference between belief and confidence (no roots, no tree), why discipline builds while motivation fades, and the three buckets every performer needs: control it, impact it, or let it go. Sandy shares practical tools for locking in focus without blocking out, how to use visualization to tap into belief you already have, and why your thoughts aren't facts. Sandy also opens up about his 16 years in recovery and how the same principles apply whether you're chasing a championship or rebuilding your life. #103 - Demystifying Hypnotherapy - What Olympic Athletes Know About the Mind That Most People Don't — with Craig Meriwether

Can you rewire your brain just by thinking? Hypnotherapist Craig Meriwether joins host Mike Stroh to break down how your subconscious mind is quietly running the show — your habits, beliefs, emotions, and even your healing. Craig shares how he overcame anxiety and depression before the age of the internet or SSRIs, what actually happens in your brain during hypnosis (hint: you do it every day without knowing), and why Olympic athletes spend half their training time doing nothing physical. In this episode you'll learn: what hypnotherapy actually is and isn't, the science behind brainwave states (alpha, theta, beta), how to stimulate your vagus nerve to reset your nervous system on demand, and a simple 5-minute "3-2-1 Reset" exercise you can use today. Craig also explains why visualization literally rewires your brain — and what you might be accidentally practicing right now. 🧠 Topics covered: clinical hypnotherapy, the subconscious mind, brainwave states, vagus nerve stimulation, EMDR, bilateral stimulation, neuroplasticity, mental rehearsal, and the 3-2-1 Reset. #102 - Stop Healing. Start Living. From Corporate to Consciousness: Manna Abraham's Journey to Inner Peace

What if everything you've been doing to heal is actually keeping you stuck? In this episode, I sit down with Manna Abraham — former CFO, founder of the Emotion Memory Pattern Release Method, and author of Finally Free — to explore why so many people spend years (or decades) in the healing loop without ever truly starting to live. Manna shares her journey from chartered accountant and CFO to trauma recovery specialist, including the day she couldn't move from her bed for three days despite every credential and certification she'd earned. That moment forced one question: what is there left to lose? In this conversation you'll discover why your values may be rooted in fear rather than strength, the difference between knowledge and wisdom and why knowing something doesn't mean you're living it, the four internal instruments of the mind and how discernment changes everything, three powerful questions that cut through survival mode and point you toward what you actually want, and why time doesn't heal — you do — and how Manna helps clients step out of complex trauma in hours rather than years. Manna's book Finally Free: The Six-Step Path for Overcoming Personal and Generational Trauma When Talk Therapy Is Not Enough is a do book, not a read book — each step is meant to be applied, not just understood. #100 - Dave Salmoni on Living With Lions, Life Threatening Fear, Fatherhood, and Staying Calm Under Pressure

In this episode, I sit down with Dave Salmoni, zoologist, producer, Animal Planet large predator expert, and one of the most fascinating men I've had the chance to speak with. Dave has spent decades working with lions, tigers, bears, sharks, and other dangerous animals in extreme environments around the world. But this conversation is about much more than wildlife. It is about fear, calm, courage, preparation, fatherhood, spirituality, and what it means to transform as a human being. We talk about how Dave learned to stay focused under pressure, what it feels like to face real life-or-death fear, the brutal lion attack that changed him, and how those experiences compare to the fears that come with marriage, parenting, and building a meaningful life. We also discuss his return to academia later in life, his pursuit of a PhD, the role of mindfulness and community, and what he has learned about happiness, purpose, and growth. This is a conversation about predators, yes, but it is also a conversation about the human nervous system, resilience, reinvention, and how to live with more courage, clarity, and compassion. #99 - How I Stopped Trying to Control Their Addiction and Found Peace with Jennifer B

What happens when someone you love is drinking (or using) and your life starts to fall apart? In this episode, I sit down with Jennifer for a brutally honest conversation about what it's like to live with addiction in the family — the fear, the anger, the shame, the hyper-vigilance, the "walking on broken glass"… and the moment you realize: I can't fix them. I'm the one who needs help too. Jennifer shares her real healing journey through Al-Anon: why it didn't click the first time, what finally broke her open, and how the program helped her move from control → caring, interference → love, and chaos → clarity. We walk through the 12 Steps (in plain language) and talk about sponsors, inventory work, boundaries, resentment, grief (including the loss of the dream), and the daily practices that actually create serenity when life is still messy. #98 - Grief Ignored Becomes Grief Intensified: Emilio Parga M.Ed., on Men, Loss, and Healing What We Avoid

In this episode, Emilio Parga, a pediatric thanatologist, shares his journey of helping individuals cope with grief and loss, particularly in the wake of significant events like 9/11. He discusses the importance of addressing unprocessed grief, especially among men, and emphasizes the need for open conversations about death. Emilio reflects on his personal experiences with loss and how they shaped his work in establishing a nonprofit dedicated to grief support. He also explores cultural perspectives on death and the evolution of grief conversations in society, advocating for grief literacy and community support. In this conversation, we get into: The difference between unprocessed grief and "unresolved grief" (and why language matters) Why grief often shows up as anger, shutdown, addiction, overwork, or emotional distance The difference between grief (what I feel inside) and mourning (how grief goes public) A powerful shift from "triggers" to reminders Why kids are often the forgotten mourners—and what happens when we don't support them early What grief literacy looks like in real life, and how I can build it in my home, my community, and my workplace If you've ever lost someone—or you're supporting someone who has—this episode is a grounded, human conversation about grief: not "getting over it," but learning how to move through it with honesty, dignity, and connection. #94 - You're Not Self-Aware, You're Overthinking with Arron Lin & Mike Stroh

Most people who say "I'm too self-aware" aren't self-aware at all — they're stuck in a loop. In this episode, Mike sits down with Arron Lin, a counseling psychology graduate student and tech-venture professional, to unpack one of the most misunderstood concepts in mental health. Arron moved from China to Canada at 17, alone, without speaking English — navigating culture shock, identity, microaggressions, and his own mental health journey the hard way. That experience is what drives his passion for making therapy more effective, more honest, and more measurable. Together, Mike and Arron explore: The real difference between self-awareness and overthinking (and why most people confuse them) What makes therapy actually work — and how to know if yours isn't Measurement-based care and feedback-informed treatment: why therapists resist it and why it matters The therapeutic alliance: why it takes months to build and why it determines everything How technology and AI can enhance therapy — without replacing the human relationship Collectivism vs individualism: the emotional weight of being a first-generation immigrant Raising emotionally literate kids, radical honesty in parenting, and why lying to your children — even small lies — matters more than you think If you've ever wondered whether your therapy is moving the needle, or whether you're truly self-aware or just spinning in your own head, this conversation will give you clarity and a new framework to work with. #92 - Why Running Away Won't Fix Your Problems - Short Episode Experiment

I recently returned from a trip to Rome, Italy, which reminded me of the illusion of the "geographical cure." This is the belief that changing my location will solve my problems, especially when it comes to addiction. During my nearly two decades of dealing with mental health and addiction issues, I found that I could abstain from getting high while on vacation or in a foreign country. However, this was only temporary relief. The real issue lies within me—my internal coping mechanisms and my inability to deal with life's challenges. Moving to a new place doesn't change that. True healing comes from developing new coping strategies, seeking support, and focusing on internal transformation. It's about taking responsibility for my life and building a meaningful, joyful existence. Please Subscribe to my YouTube - YouTube Subscription Link  Chapters 00:00 The Illusion of the Geographical Cure 01:20 The Reason Most People Abstain When Traveling 04:21 Why You Can't Do It Alone 05:41 The Importance of Internal Change Takeaways You cannot escape yourself. The geographical cure is an illusion. Addiction is not about the substance, but about internal coping mechanisms. Moving to a new location won't fix internal problems. Recovery requires internal change, not just external relocation. Support systems are crucial for overcoming addiction. Coping skills are essential for dealing with triggers. Healing is possible through responsibility and honesty. It's important to recognize what you're running from. True change comes from within. Accepting shortcomings and taking responsibility are important aspects of parenting that can inspire personal growth and motivation. The happiness derived from parenting is influenced by the parenting style and the intergenerational relationships it fosters. Elitism and bias can hinder productive conversations and understanding. Researchers should acknowledge the limitations and challenges of psychological research. Certainty in complex social phenomena is unrealistic; uncertainty is inherent in scientific exploration. The value of sacrifice and the complexity of personal choices should be considered. Honest and sincere conversations are essential in a society dominated by social media and tribalism. I have worked in a variety of hospitals, community mental health clinics and in my private practice, providing individual, group, couples and family therapy. I have been educated and trained in person-centred, cognitive, narrative, compassion-focused, emotion-focused therapies. In addition, I completed training in hypnosis, EMDR (eye-movement desensitization & reprocessing), NLP (neurolinguistic programming practitioner) and EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy). This broad range of therapies allows me to offer an integrated model of counselling that is most effective in helping my clients to develop skills that will allow them to have better control over troublesome emotions and intrusive, negative thoughts. I am also a Certified First Responder Counsellor and the need for supports in this area have never been greater.  I am a son, a brother, a husband, a father and grandfather of four. I have learned – and continue to learn a great deal from all of these important relationships in my life. I have lived with chronic pain since 1981 – I have also learned much from that relationship. "change always comes - we can only choose how to respond" I am a member in the following organizations: The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, The Ontario Association of Social Workers, The Canadian Hypnosis Society, The Society for Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis, The International Centre for Emotion-Focused Therapy, The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and Dying with Dignity Canada.  🔗FOLLOW ▶Web - https://startswithme.ca ▶YouTube - https://goo.gl/P4L9hH 🎧 PODCAST ▶ Apple - https://goo.gl/tkZKgh ▶ Spotify - https://goo.gl/iabccZ ▶ Amazon - https://amzn.to/3uHiFFG ▶ Web - https://startswithme.ca/mentalhealthpodcast/ Questions - [email protected] Disclaimer Professional medical care and psychotherapeutic services are not offered on this Youtube channel.
