Compartmentalizing & Using Your Emotional Intelligence to Stay on Track
Compartmentalizing & Emotional Intelligence: How to Stay on Track When Life Gets MessyEpisode Description: Ever had one of those days where one bad moment threatens to derail everything? A tough conversation before a meeting. A personal issue that bleeds into work. A challenge that sits heavy on your mind and steals your focus. In this episode, I’m diving into the art of healthy compartmentalizing — the skill of putting challenges into a “mental box” so you can stay focused on what matters most right now, and come back to deal with those challenges later. When paired with Emotional Intelligence, this becomes one of the most powerful tools for resilience, leadership, and personal growth.I share a defining chapter from my own journey — a moment when life threw me into chaos just weeks after launching a new business. With my back against the wall, bills to pay, clients to serve, and no time to fall apart, I had to dig deep and use these skills to keep moving forward. This isn’t about avoiding problems or pushing feelings down forever. It’s about managing your emotional state, protecting your focus, and giving yourself permission to show up fully — even when things are messy behind the scenes. You’ll learn: ✨ The 4 components of Emotional Intelligence and how they help you compartmentalize effectively ✨ Practical tools to keep emotions from spilling into the wrong moments ✨ Why this skill builds resilience, resourcefulness, and trust — in yourself and in others ✨ How to create boundaries, rituals, and “reset buttons” to help you shift your state quicklyWhether you’re leading a team, running a business, or navigating life’s curveballs, this episode will help you stay steady, protect your energy, and keep moving toward your goals — even in the middle of a storm.🎧 Listen now and learn how to box it, focus, and keep going.#Resilience #EmotionalIntelligence #Leadership #Focus #MindsetSupport the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. The Crisis of Undervalued Training: What’s at Stake for Future Generations
In this thought-provoking episode, we explore something many of us in learning and development have felt but rarely say out loud:Training is being undervalued—and the consequences are far-reaching.With workplaces shifting toward short-form, micro-learning and compliance-focused modules, we’re seeing less investment in deep, applied, and reflective learning. But what’s lost when training becomes a checkbox? And what kind of future are we building for the next generation of leaders?🎯 In this episode, I break down:Why training is no longer being treated as a strategic assetHow digital platforms like LinkedIn Learning serve a purpose—but aren’t the full pictureThe difference between knowledge and wisdom in adult learningThe danger of producing workers who are competent on paper but lack true confidence and problem-solving skillsWhat we can do as trainers, assessors, and leaders to hold the line on quality education👥 I also reflect on personal experiences in vocational education and the transformational impact of adult learning done right. This episode is for educators, facilitators, RTO professionals, HR managers, and leaders who care deeply about capability, culture, and what it really means to be future-ready.💬 If this resonates with you, let me know what part and why. I’d love to hear your stories—because it’s going to take all of us to shift the narrative and champion meaningful, lasting learning.📣 Share this episode with a colleague, manager, or someone in your L&D team. Create Your Vision - Thoughts Become Things
Creating a Vision for Your Future with Gratitude and VisualizationSegment 1: Understanding the Power of MindsetBefore we get into the "how," let’s talk about the "why." Life can throw challenges our way – setbacks, disappointments, and moments of doubt. It’s easy to fall into a negative mindset, focusing on what’s wrong or what’s missing in our lives. But here’s the truth: what you focus on expands. If you’re constantly thinking about the negative, you’re inadvertently inviting more of it into your life.Segment 2: The Transformative Practice of GratitudeGratitude isn’t just about saying "thank you" – it’s about cultivating a deep appreciation for the present moment and the abundance already in your life. When you focus on what you have rather than what you lack, you create a mindset of sufficiency and abundance. Here’s how to start:Daily Gratitude Practice: Each morning or evening, write down three things you’re grateful for. They don’t have to be monumental – it could be as simple as the warmth of your coffee or the sound of birds outside.Feel It Fully: Don’t just list your gratitudes; take a moment to feel them. Close your eyes and immerse yourself in the joy or comfort they bring.Segment 3: Creating a Vision with VisualizationNow that you’re building a foundation of gratitude, let’s talk about creating your future. Visualization is a tool that allows you to imagine your goals and dreams as if they’re already happening. Athletes, performers, and successful entrepreneurs use visualization to prime their minds for success. Here’s how you can start:Set Your Scene: Imagine Your Ideal Future: Anchor Your Emotions: Repeat Daily: Segment 4: Combining Gratitude and VisualizationHere’s where the magic happens: combine gratitude and visualization into a single practice. Start by expressing gratitude for what you already have, then transition into visualizing the future you’re creating. Segment 5: Real-Life ExamplesI share a couple of real storiesSegment 6: Taking ActionGratitude and visualization are powerful tools, but they’re most effective when paired with action. Start taking small, intentional steps toward your vision. Understand and Embrace Fear
Understanding FearFEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) is a natural, instinctive response to perceived threats or danger. It activates the "fight, flight, or freeze" response, preparing your body and mind to respond to potential risks. While fear often has a negative connotation, it serves a critical purpose: protecting us from harm and guiding us to make decisions that ensure survival.Fear can manifest in various forms:Physical Fear: Emotional Fear: Psychological Fear: Transforming Fear into a Positive ForceWhile fear can be paralyzing, it can also be a catalyst for growth and achievement when channeled effectively. Here’s how fear can be used in a positive manner:Awareness and Preparedness Motivation for Growth Building Resilience Enhancing Creativity Clarifying Priorities Fuel for Action Strategies to Channel Fear PositivelyAcknowledge the Fear Reframe the Perspective Take Small Steps Practice Mindfulness Seek Support Visualize Success Leverage the Energy Embracing FearRather than avoiding fear, embrace it as a powerful tool for transformation. By consciously re-framing and redirecting its energy, fear becomes a stepping stone to resilience, success, and self-discovery. Remember, courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the willingness to move forward despite it. When the Trainer needs Coaching
Segment 1: Recognizing the Need to Train YourselfAsk yourself:Am I feeling less motivated, stuck, or overwhelmed?Do I find myself going through the motions rather than feeling inspired?Am I struggling to adapt to new requirements, technologies, or expectations?Segment 2: Using Self-Reflective QuestionsHere are a few that I turn to when I need to center myself:What am I really feeling about this change or challenge? Be honest with yourself. Naming the feeling without judgment can help you see it clearly and create space for the right response. How would I approach this if I were guiding a learner? We often know exactly what to say to support others. Flip that knowledge inward and imagine that you’re your own trainee. What aspects of this situation are within my control? Identify what you can influence—like your mindset, the strategies you apply, or the support you seek out—and release what’s beyond your control. What is one small action I can take today? When things feel overwhelming, it’s the small actions that build momentum. Think of it as a micro-learning step, just like with a learner. What am I afraid of losing or risking by making this change? This question can bring out hidden fears or anxieties. Addressing them openly helps us move forward more confidently. What strengths have helped me overcome challenges in the past, and how can I use them now? Reflect on past successes and the qualities that got you through. It’s a reminder of your resilience.Segment 3: Shifting Your Mindset as a TrainerSegment 4: Practical Self-Coaching TechniquesSegment 5: Embracing Support and Building Your CommunitySupport the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Conscious Competence - The 4 stages and how to implement
Welcome to The Trainers Edge Podcast. I'm Donna Moulds, and today we're exploring the Conscious Competence Ladder a powerful framework for guiding learners from ignorance to mastery.Introduced by Noel Burch in the 1970s, this model has four key stages every trainer and assessor needs to understand.Stage 1: Unconscious Incompetence Learners don't know what they don't know. Your role is to create awareness through introductory sessions, demonstrations, and skills gap assessments.Stage 2: Conscious Incompetence Learners recognise their gaps and can feel overwhelmed. Break the learning into manageable steps, offer practice opportunities, and give constructive feedback.Stage 3: Conscious Competence Learners can perform the skill but it takes effort. Use scenarios, simulations, and hands-on activities to build confidence through repetition.Stage 4: Unconscious Competence The skill becomes second nature. Shift your role to reinforcement -- challenge learners with diverse contexts to deepen their expertise.Reflective Competence The final stage. Learners can teach and articulate the skill to others. Encourage mentoring, leading sessions, and ongoing reflective practice.Support the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Don't drag your sorry self into 2024
It's that time of year, you know, that time where if you were fortunate to have a break then you at some point will be returning to work, your job, your business your passion hopefully. So how can you return to work without feeling that holiday hangover? If you are already back at work and hating it, this message is for you. There are some really simple strategies to help you get ready to return to work or your business without feeling dread. One of the ways is to be sure you have enough rest, and you can feel like you have recharged. I don’t know about you but I reached the end of the year exhausted, fatigued from stress and really need a break, in fact day one of my 2-week break, I got sick, so sick that I couldn’t do anything, this wasn’t a coincidence I can assure you, I probably knew unconsciously that I was going to crash and burn and if I didn’t I would have kept pushing through.2023 was full of amazing opportunities, and great achievements for all and it was also one of the hardest years of my career that I had experienced in some time. You see I had a plan, it was a great plan that would change lives, not only my team's but our client's lives and ensure they can build a better future. By December I knew I needed a break so I could come back to work fresh and achieve all the plans we have made back in 2023 for 2024/2025.Those of you that have a job and spend every day at work hating it, get a grip, or should I say a new job, you aren’t stuck so stop spending 40 hours a week doing something you hate. If that’s where you are going to stay, then start getting grateful for what you have and so on a daily basis. I am grateful for my job as it …..fill in the blanksThank you for my job while I get my side hustle off the ground.Even if you think you hate your job there are always things to be grateful for.AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links, if you purchase something through these links you won’t pay more, however, I may receive a commission that enables me to earn a living, keep the channel going and at times purchase a nice bottle of prosecco to celebrate your awesomeness, thanks for listening.Thank you so much for your support and understanding! Adult Learners and Principles that are the key to learning.
Season #6, Episode #2Adult Learners and Principles that are the key to learning.Learning Face to Face will always be a desire of many adult learners. As educators we want our student to get the most from the our sessions and when we understand the Adult Learning Principles we can be more conscious about planning our session to include this and encourage others to share. It doesn't matter whether you are delivering face to face or via ZOOM you can ensure their is a high level of interaction and story telling into your session. In this Podcast I give some personal examples and how this has been beneficial and also explain Malcolm Knowles theory on the 6 Principles. See below for his example from the internet. Malcolm Knowles defined the term andragogy in the 1970s as ‘the art and science of helping adults learn.’Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning:1. Adults are internally motivated and self-directedAdult learners make choices relevant to their learning objectives. They also direct their learning goals with the guidance of their mentors. Students need to be given the freedom to assume responsibility for their own choices.2. Adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiencesEducators encourage learners to connect past experiences with current knowledge and activities. Educators must know how to relate the sum of the learner’s experience to the current learning experiences.3. Adults are goal orientedAdult learners aim to acquire relevant and adequate knowledge and for this reason intended learning outcomes should be clearly identified. Once the learning goals have been identified, educators must align the learning activities such that these objectives are fulfilled within a certain period of time.4. Adults are relevancy orientedAdult learners benefit by relating the assigned tasks to their own learning goals. If it is clear that the activities they are engaged into, directly contribute to achieving their personal learning objectives, then they will be inspired and motivated to engage in projects and successfully complete them.5. Adults are practicalIt is very important for educators to identify appropriate ways and convert theoretical learning to practical activities. Work placement is a way for students to apply the theoretical concepts learned inside the classroom into real-life situations. Learning is assisted when appropriate ways of implementing theoretical knowledge in real life situations is made cleaSupport the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Are You a Crappy Trainer?
Episode NotesSeason #6, Episode #1Are you a crappy trainerI recently spoke to a friend about her experience in her recent Training & Assessment course, it made me furious and prompted some questions to you, my listeners.Never forget this is your clients learning journey not yours! What is your delivery like? Do you know why your learners are there, take the time to get to know their motivation and remember you are there to teach skills and knowledge not talk at people.Becoming complacent with our delivery as we know the content so well that we forget that the student doesn’t know what they don’t know, and we can rush over content. Having someone sit in on a session with their student hat on so we can receive constructive feedback about our delivery, content, timing and if we are hitting the mark. Traps Trainers Fall Into
Episode NotesSeason #5, Episode #2Traps Trainers Fall IntoAs trainers we can fall into several traps, have you?Trap #1Wanting to deliver a program and spending weeks developing without going to the market and seeing the need. We can have many great programs that clients don’t want to buy, or students don’t want to attend. Knowing your target audience makes it easy to go to market and get some feedback on the need so you can develop what is needed and contextualise for greater impact.Trap #2Becoming complacent with our delivery as we know the content so well that we forget that the student doesn’t know what they don’t know, and we can rush over content. Having someone sit in on a session with their student hat on so we can receive constructive feedback about our delivery, content, timing and if we are hitting the mark. Workshop Activities and Icebreakers - The Benefits
Workshop Activities and Icebreakers - The benefits are HUGE, let me reiterate the benefits are really huge for the people attending your workshops and also for you as the trainer. Lets start with benefits of an ICE Breaker at the start of your training session / WorkshopAs people come into the training room they can be in a frame of mind that they are here to learn and have an open mind, or they are forced to be here and therefore they are resistant to not only participating they are what we call a hostage, they were told they must be there and they don't want to have any part of it.An ice breaker can help build rapport and break down barriers especially if they are fun and involved. Ensure your ice breaker is meaningful and generates either action or communication. The benefits of activities are they keep people engaged, moving in motion and when activities get people thinking especially when their may be a little bit of competitiveness between the groups this can lead to a significantly higher level of learning and engagement. Workshop activities need to be aligned to the training and build on each stage of the session, allowing people to see the connection and want to contribute, use resources and tools that generate this, large sticky notes, white boards, other tangible items. When the activities engage people are more open to the learning and also listening to what others have to say.Support the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Use Feedback to Improve your Skills
As a trainer we know how important feedback is even if it makes us feel a little uncomfortable at times. As we head toward the end of the year we know that training slows down if you are in VET and even if you do non accredited training for Government Departments this also slows down. Take the time to evaluate the feedback you have received over the past 12 months and make a plan for skills development or material development, walk into 2021 ready and in a more prepared place than you have ever been.I hope this short podcast is helpful.Support the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Adult Learning Principles - The Art of Story Telling
See below for his example from the internet.Malcolm Knowles defined the term andragogy in the 1970s as ‘the art and science of helping adults learn.’Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning:1. Educators must know how to relate the sum of the learners experience to the current learning experiences.3. Learning is assisted when appropriate ways of implementing theoretical knowledge in real life situations is made clear.6. Adult learners like to be respectedAdult learners thrive in collaborative relationships with their educators. Learners become more productive when they’re cSupport the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Confessions of a recovering multi-tasker
Multi-tasking - I used to be so proud to say I am an excellent multi-tasker but the truth is that's not really an achievement. I would pride myself on being able to do multiple things and i would constantly allow myself to be interrupted thinking I can just go back to what I was doing after I help this person and that person. Its actually a problem I needed to overcome to be able to be more productive and do things better. I found that I worked at such a high capacity really not getting where I needed to go and pay attention to what was The One Thing that was most important. As a recovering multi-tasker I am now having to consciously think about what I am doing and remove distractions so i can get whats important completed and let go. I have always been under the impression that it takes 21 days to create a new habit but guess what in the book The One Thing they actually have scientific evidence that is takes 66 days.Support the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Change - How to help your team through Change
Change is inevitable in every organisation and with the current climate we are transitioning through change and moving back to the workplace, working from home and we have to do day to day life differently. Not every one copes with change the same and as leaders we can help our team cope with change better if we understand how they feel about change. Looking at peoples values and how comfortable with change we can start to ask really key questions to see how people feel about change, understand what the change is and how the change will occur.Looking at the 6 human needs concept from Anthony Robbins we can identify what out team needs in respect to this information about the change. Certainty, Uncertainty Variety, Significance, Love/Connection, Growth & Contribution. When we understand that someone who values certainty needs to know the what, how, & when for example before they can get on board with the change.I hope you get some great ideas that you can implement into your team to support others through change.Support the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Authentic Conversations
"We were born to be real not perfect" A life without authentic conversations is like a life without bearing your soul.As an educator I am always thinking about language and how we can lift people with our language, or how we can contribute to other peoples lives in a genuine way. One of the ways in which we can do this is through authentic conversations. An authentic conversation is one that comes from the heart and not so much the head. These conversations have a place in all realms of our life, business, personal, networking, even with a stranger. Authentic conversations are easy to have we just need to allow ourselves to not think from a fear based perspective (what will they think? how will they react). What is an authentic conversation? An authentic conversation is never a negative conversation it is a true conversation even with a tough subject. If you have to provide feedback to a staff member, if you have to tell a loved one you are feeling hurt, or even when you have to say no to someone. I personally have a life where I say what I need to say for the greater good. I tell my partner i’m disappointed that he didn’t talk to me about something that we should be talking about in our relationship. More importantly when you have an authentic conversation and say what you really need to say then you can let it go, you don’t need to hold onto negativity or allow thoughts to distract you from enjoying life. Authentic conversations in the workplace. This can be more challenging because you have so many personalities to negotiate with. However an authentic conversation is using your personal power even when the team dynamics are challenging.Authentic conversations need to be developed in a team where people do not need to feel threatened because they are being truthful (I don’t think this is a good idea because…….., can we look at this idea and see if it has any possibilities?) How to have an authentic conversation.Authentic conversations are easier to have than you may think. Its about knowing what you want to say without ego or anger. Its about knowing how you feel about the situation or the emotion you may be experiencing. Its not about being right and its not about making someone else feel bad.It is about being real and discussing things that need to be discussed. Communication is one of the most powerful and useful tools we have. We also have the choice to communicate even if people don’t want to listen we have the freedom to speak (wSupport the showSubscribe to our podcast: 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/training-assessment-professional-development/id1493101646?uo=4 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Zxv2pe5e66gvLdKa9wWg1Connect with the community: 🎓 Skool: https://www.skool.com/the-trainers-edge-8024/about ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TrainingandAssessmentP_D 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/trainingandassessmentPD 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/t_a_p_d/AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE: My podcast episode notes may contain affiliate links. Find your passion and make it purposeful.
If you haven't found your passion yet then I can wait to share some insights with you and maybe help you find yours.I have had many discussions over the years where people ask me how did I know what my purpose was, where did this come from, and how will I know what mine is?Its actually difficult to explain as I am not sure how it occurred, I just knew what I was supposed to do and this has continued at different stages of my life. Maybe I am just lucky, or maybe I listed to what my internal direction is telling me, I have a strong intuition and i love to go after things that light me up.
