EPISODE FINALE - two ironmen and an openlakes finisher

There were highs, there were lows, but they all did it. Bringing you this last episode from 2 long distance triathletes and an Openlakes finisher. We reflect back on the race, what they would do the same, what they would different... And of course, the inevitable question of, what's next?

  15. 20

the big dance - challenge almere full distance

we were worried about DNF's, but hadn't considered a DNS! In this ep, we talk through how race day was and what exactly went down including bulls (not balls for once) and ding-donging. Were there tears? Were there any poop related incidents? Did they do it?

  16. 19

This is it - the big dance(s)

We meet with less than one week to go for Ben and Alex taking on Challenge Almere, and just under two weeks until Open Lakes for Papa Woo. How are we feeling? What are our predictions? What's an activation session? Carb loading? Special needs bags on course? And of course, it wouldn’t be an episode of why we tri without some toilet talk.

  17. 18

    The second final countdown

Race day(s) are fast approaching. The boys are getting their last big training sessions in now, counting down the days and thinking about what tattoos they are going to get. We look back at their aims from 6 months ago to see if they've kept their promises to themselves. Has Papa Woo lost the weight he wanted to? Has Ben kept to his plan? And has Alex learnt from his nutrition mistakes? Well, if they haven't, it's too late now.

  18. 17

His first triathlon coming up, we answer his questions

In this episode we invite Club Woo member James onto the podcast to talk about everything he needs to know before his first ever triathlon coming up soon. Glasses or contact lenses? How do brick sessions work? Does he need a tri suit? The benefits of a cycling / tri club. Peeing in the wetsuit. And of course - if you shave your legs, how far do you go?

  19. 16

Summer catch up, controversial t-shirt choices, and evaluating the Ironman Experience

Papa Woo, Alex and Becca catch up after a small summer break (Ben was still off enjoying his holiday). Papa Woo is making good progress on his weight loss and consistency goals before his next race, Alex has been battling a few weeks of sickness but is starting to get back on it, and Becca's birthday 'presents' have changed the course of her training. We also talk about the Ironman experience, including just how much the merch actually costs. We'll be comparing it to Challenge & Openlakes races in an upcoming episode.

  20. 15

lessons from Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland (part 2)

In part 1 we talked about how the race went... in this part, we talk about the lessons we learned - pacing strategy, toilet breaks, fuelling, heart rate, proper swim sighting and more. Hopefully we'll carry those lessons forward for the big dance!

  21. 14

We completed Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland - how was it?! (part 1)

The boys talk about the race weekend, and a breakdown of how the race went.  Did they hit their targets? Did Alex stick to his heart rate zones? How many jelly babies were sacrificed? Listen to find out.

  22. 13

    THE DAY BEFORE RACE DAY

It's race weekend. And the word of the episode is "apprehensive". We're talking final prep, going through final checklists, and discussing the all important last minute details - will Alex shave his legs to get sub 5 hours? Will Papa Woo do it in sub 7?

  23. 12

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: tapering, bike upgrades & training to heart rate

We catch up with the boys in their final training moments and their plans for tapering. Papa Woo is, of course, prepared and ready, Ben's bike got some much needed upgrades, Alex is breaking all the rules, and I introduced a new discipline in to my training...

  24. 11

Preparing for Ironman 70.3 and how to avoid DQ

With less than 2 weeks until Papa Woo and Alex take on Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland, we take a look at the 202 pages of official triathlon rules, call them out on some BS, and talk about why experience is key.

  25. 10

Do you have to do an ironman to be an ironman? BONUS EP w/Papa Woo

Welcome to the first of our bonus eps - a series of shorter episodes and focused chat with one of the boys, but still with input from the others. In this ep, I talk to Papa woo about some more tips on how to pick your first race, doing an Ironman branded race and what that actually means, as well as discussing how and where triathlon was born.

  26. 9

Beginner tri Q&A: Do you have to do front crawl? Do you need a tri bike? What are jelly legs?

In this episode we talk about nip slips, porta loos, washing machines, jelly legs, ablutions and vascular shunting…  You might be wondering what any of those have to do with triathlon, you'll have to listen to find out our answers to the questions that all beginner triathletes are asking.

  27. 8

The real reason we tri - food

In this episode, we talk about the thing we're all best at. Eating. The boys also reflect on things they should change in the lead up to their race... but whether they're going to actually do it or not is a whole other question. Ben is powered by mojito mixes, Alex has already calculated how many jelly babies you'd have to eat to fuel a tri, and Papa Woo eats peanut butter, salad cream and cheese sandwiches - so maybe don't take any advice from this episode.

  28. 7

Living with triathletes: the good, the bad and the hungry.

We introduce Ms. Orla, papa woo's wife, to share another perspective on this triathlon journey. Are there benefits, or is it just like living with tired and hungry toddlers? Joining woowoo run day? https://strava.app.link/cyUqln8sSIb

  29. 6

Aims, hopes & fears for race day - is a DNF the worse thing that could happen?!

We get talking about worst case scenarios for race day: DNFs, equipment failures, Ben getting arrested etc. Alex gets very technical with his calculated times for the race which leaves the rest shocked, but not surprised & Papa Woo is simply aiming to finish on the same day that he started. That's the amateur behaviour we celebrate.

  30. 5

6 months to go! Training update

Doing things a bit differently this week: the topic of aims, hopes and fears for the race was a big one, so for this episode we're just bringing you a training update from everyone - with the big 6 month to go countdown looming over the boy's heads! ( & the next ep will be hopes & fears for race day)

  31. 4

How much is all of this going to cost??

Ben shares a breakdown of how much Challenge Almeere is costing us, as well as how much a dream Hawaii race would cost.  When is the right time to upgrade / buy new gear? Who would buy speed (the actual drug) to get faster!?

  32. 3

Where we Tri: how to pick a triathlon, why we picked Almere and Westfriesland, Ben's new shoes and a fluffy guest...

This week we look at what factors go into picking a race, and explain how they ended up with Ironman Westfriesland and Challenge Almere. Ben sets a PB in his new running shoes which look... interesting. Rosie, our fluffy friend shows off her new squeaky toy. Hold on tight, it's a mad one. We also speak about the power of accountability and how our WA group helps this - feel free to join it here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/ILJ5vwE07r5EoEcOs95SfH PLUS - there will be a BONUS EP with more generic tips for picking a tri! (there was far too much chaos to fit it all into this ep!)

  33. 2

    The story so far

You've met 'the crazy gang', but how experienced are these amateurs? In this episode Ben and Alex demonstrate their superb maths skills, the siblings try make father Brian say penny farthing without him knowing and we discuss our history of triathlons.

  34. 1

    34 weeks!!

Meet the amateurs; the Grandad (Papa woo), the Dad (Ben), and Alex (just Alex - it will make sense soon). I'm your host, Rebecca, and this podcast is all about why these amateurs tri, and their journey to long distance triathlons.
