    77 - HER CRIME WAS SAVING OTHERS... | Edith Cavell (Nurse) | WWI

    At the beginning of World War I, a network of civilians in German occupied Belgium began hiding British and French soldiers and guiding them toward neutral Holland.   But they needed help. Someone they could trust.   Edith Cavell volunteered because that’s who she was.   Her nursing school in Brussels became more than a hospital. Secretly she hid British and French soldiers in her attic, cellar, and spare rooms.   She provided civilian clothing, food, and medicine.     76 - AMERICA'S SPARTANS | The Maryland 400 (Soldiers) | Revolutionary War

    In August 1776, General George Washington’s army faced annihilation at the Battle of Long Island.   British General William Howe executed a brilliant flanking maneuver, trapping the inexperienced American forces against the East River.   The fate of the Revolution hung by a thread.   Standing in the path of thousands of advancing British and Hessian troops was the First Maryland Regiment, fewer than 400 mostly young men.   They launched a series of desperate bayonet charges delaying the enemy. Again and again, six times in all, they advanced into overwhelming enemy fire.   Nearly all were killed, but their sacrifice bought precious time for General Washington.   Their stand allowed thousands of American troops to escape to Brooklyn Heights.     75 - DOES AMERICA NEED A PERFECT PRESIDENT? | Andrew Jackson (General & President) | War of 1812

    President and General Andrew Jackson was many things to many people.   Most of all he was a man of boundless energy who captured the presidency despite being the consummate Washington outsider.   He was one of history’s greatest generals, winning a victory at the Battle of New Orleans (against all odds) that most fail to realize likely saved the interior of the country from continued British encroachment, linking the heartland and the far west with British holdings in Canada.   Many tried to kill the man.     74 - HE REFUSED TO ABANDON THE ALAMO | Lt. James Bonham (Soldier & Courier) | 1836

    It is hard to understand the true nature of the sacrifice of the Alamo in American and Texas history without looking at the life and service of one of its stalwart defenders.   His name, James Butler Bonham, truly one of the least known, yet most devoted soldiers who fought to the death defending the eleven women and nine children who were also in the Alamo that fateful day of March 6, 1836.   Lieutenant Bonham was young with his whole life ahead of him.     73 - THEY LAUGHED... TILL SHE OPENED FIRE | Annie Oakley (Sharpshooter) | Wild West

    Word spread through the town in minutes.   A young unknown woman had just challenged the famous marksman Frank Butler to a shooting contest. Frank was a shootist who had never lost a rifle match.   Facing him stood a shy young woman. She wore a plain, homespun dress and held an old, worn-out rifle.   Some in the crowd laughed out loud, mocking the girl.   But when the shooting began the laughter died.   One target after another. Clay pigeons, tossed coins, soda bottles, it didn’t matter. The young woman’s rifle cracked with precision. Shot after shot struck true, right out of the air, not a single miss!   When the contest ended, the famous Frank Butler had missed just one target. But the girl hit them all perfectly!   The crowd erupted, swarming around her, demanding her name. She just smiled politely saying nothing. It was Frank Butler who answered them.   “The girl’s name is Annie Oakley,” he said. “I expect you’ll remember that!”   Right there launched one of the most remarkable careers in history, a young woman who would be known by kings, queens, and presidents.   But that wasn’t what was important to her.     72 - THE HERO WHO COULD NOT BE BOUGHT | The Good Shepherd | *An Easter Special*

    In Middle Eastern lands, lands where my wife and I spent part of our lives, we watched humble shepherds, local herders running their sheep near our villa for the grass that grew there in the winter and spring months.   I talked with several. They were strong, but humble men. They had few, if any, resources to fall back on.   God was their protector. And they called upon Him regularly. And their children, and their sheep, were to be preserved at all costs.   Truly, they were good shepherds.   From this cultural backdrop, Jesus ministered to the world.   The love the Savior holds for each of us proven by shouldering the seemingly impossible pain, sacrifice, and the eternal burden of human sin which encompasses the Infinite Atonement, in Gethsemane, on the Cross at Calvary, and three days buried in the Tomb.   As his beloved “lambs,” the Lord knows each of us by name. He carries each one of us in his arms and in his heart, especially those who may feel unworthy, alone, or hopelessly lost.   My friends, please know during this Easter Season that the Good Shepherd lives. He loves us.     71 - ANGEL WITH THE LAMP | Florence Nightingale (Nurse) | Crimean War

    The young soldier jerked upright on his cot, another wave of violent pain tore through him.   Outside, the distant thunder of artillery. But inside conditions were as lethal as the battlefield, more soldiers dying from infection and disease than from enemy bullets.   Again, the young soldier called out: “Please… someone…water.”   The soldier lay back. In his moment of hopelessness, the faint glow of an oil lamp appeared.   Coming closer it revealed the compassionate face of a tall, determined woman. She lifted a cup of clean water to his lips.   “Easy now,” she said softly.   The soldier stared in disbelief. Such a beautiful woman, and here in this horrible place?   “What…what is your name?” he whispered to her.   She gave him a reassuring smile. “My name is Florence. Florence Nightingale. Rest now.”   But this wasn’t just any nurse. She was a miracle worker making the needed changes to turn the military hospital from a place where men went to die to a place of healing.   She studied the newly revealed germ theory.     68 - REMEMBERING OUR HEROES 🇺🇸 Commemorating 250 Years of Freedom

    “Give me liberty or give me death!” So said Patrick Henry to a divided America, fearful of standing for independence.   But stand they did.   250 years ago this year, a small group of seemingly ordinary men did something extraordinary. They signed their names to the Declaration of Independence…risking everything!   “Their lives. Their fortunes. Their sacred honor.”   And they didn’t do it for fame or glory.   They did it for you.   Today in 2026 that promise miraculously lives on. But it could easily die if not nurtured, fought for, but most of all, taught to our children and grandchildren!   In the iconic words of President Ronald Reagan: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”   Let us honor our heroes by making ourselves worthy of what they so freely gave us.     67 - TAMING THE DARK AND BLOODY GROUND | Daniel Boone (Frontiersman) | Revolutionary War

    In 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, Daniel Boone was captured by the Shawnee Indians.   Though a prisoner, he studied their language. When he learned of an impending attack on Boonesborough that was encouraged, supplied, and paid for by the British, he escaped the Shawnee village.   Running 160 miles in five days, he warned the settlement.   The siege that followed was one of Daniel Boone’s finest hours. Heavily outnumbered and low on food and supplies, Boone led the defense of the fort with calm and capable resolve.   The settlers held out until the Shawnee attackers, and their British advisors, withdrew. Boonesborough survived, and Boone’s reputation soared.   Yet fame did not bring him fortune. The unscrupulous took advantage of him. He always believed a handshake should be good enough.   He would, however, end up surrendering his claims to unscrupulous lawyers and move farther west.     Private Audie Murphy, just over five feet tall and 17-years-old, would become the most decorated American soldier of World War II.   But his war record of unbelievable courage and fighting skill did not begin with the war. It began with family hardship and personal tragedy.   His courage came from a deeply personal place. He simply refused to abandon those who depended on him.   His list of battlefield heroics reads like a movie…or a myth.   By war’s end, now First Lieutenant Audie Murphy had earned every single U.S. combat award for valor. Several of them multiple times. He was wounded more than three times.   At war’s end, now a hardened veteran, he was just twenty years old…not old enough to vote or drink!   But America hailed him a hero. The torchlight wavered as the Roman guards stepped back from the cell.   Inside, kneeling on cold stone was a man who was scourged, blood dripping from his torn back. He awaited the executioner’s heavy sword.   Issuing from the Emperor’s palace the “justice” of Rome—proud, powerful, pitiless—had determined the man’s fate before he could say a word in his own defense.   What’s worse, his crime was not treason, theft, or violence.   It was love.   The Latin name of the man Caesar was putting to death was Valenteenus. I saw this firsthand while working in an official capacity overseas. It was stunning.   In fact, it was a miracle.     In April of 1861, the War Between the States broke out.   Nine-year-old Johnny Lincoln Clem ran away from home to join the Union Army. But Johnny found the Army not particularly interested in recruiting a boy.   The commander of the 3rd Ohio Regiment told him he “wasn't enlisting infants just yet,” and sent him home. Johnny, then headed to the 22nd Michigan Regiment nearby.   Determined, Johnny tagged along and demonstrated his skill as a drummer boy so professionally the commander allowed him to stay with the regiment.   At the same time, a fourteen-year-old boy joined the Union Army in late 1861, Company D, 8th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. What he fought for was “to free the blacks” and “save the Union.”   His name was George Preston Nock. He was my Great-Grandfather.   Their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice is why this nation is what it is today. It’s why we’ve become an Ensign of Liberty to the world, that Shining City on A Hill that President Reagan spoke of so reverently.   These two related, true stories that overlap—representing so many heroes, as well—show us why we remember Veterans Day this November. . But in the heat of battle Sergeant Frank Currey refused to retreat but did what he had to in order to survive.   This orphaned kid from New York gathered his weapons, and moving quickly, did what no one thought possible… .     Crouched deep underground within the bowels of the massive building, inhaling putrid air without complaint, and in the meager light of a single candle, the Union prisoners worked with a purpose. . Among them was LIEUTENANT JACOB MERRITT, just twenty-three-years-old. . Jacob lay on his belly in the cramped tunnel, chipping at the earthen wall, the opening just twenty inches wide. The tunnel began in the new kitchen. . The prisoners moved the stove and dislodging select bricks allowing access inside the chimney providing access below to the old, sealed off kitchen in the basement. But this was also known as “Rat Hell.” . Inch by painful inch, the tunnel grew longer. From the digging, Jacob’s hands blistered, his fingernails split. . Digging without his clothes (to keep any sign of dirt from them) the aggressive rats plagued him, biting his bare skin, running over his legs, back, even his hair. .     Morning of September 10, 1813. The British naval squadron under Commander Robert Harriet Barclay, advanced with the confidence and skill of the world’s most powerful navy.   Facing them that day was a young American naval officer just *27-years-old*... Oliver Hazard Perry.   As the two fleets closed distance near Put-In-Bay, Ohio, Commander Perry’s men braced themselves.   Most were farmers and frontiersmen. Many were boys. Almost all had never seen naval combat. Some were freed African American slaves.   Perry had barely a small cadre of ten experienced naval officers, not hardly enough to man his small fleet without volunteer help. Perry’s flagship, the USS Lawrence, bore the brunt of British fire. Masts splintered, rigging collapsed, and blood flowed on the deck.   Of Commander Perry’s crew totaling 103, nearly 80 were killed or wounded. The deck was a scene of bloody carnage. More so, a full 25 percent were clergy members!   Even today, 83 percent of Nobel Peace Prize recipients identify as Christian or come from Christian nations of the West.   For Newton, Boyle, Kepler, Pascal, Linnaeus, and Faraday, the research laboratory and the church were, in truth, identical.     We admire Charlie Kirk. He sacrificed himself for his faith.   Two thousand years ago, shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, a young disciple by the name of Stephen, also spoke for truth and willingly gave his life for the faith.   Both Stephen and Charlie Kirk were young and exceptionally dedicated to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Both spoke truth in the public forum before all who would listen. And in the end, we know, both met violent deaths at the hands of those who passionately hated the truth.   Standing with Jerusalem’s leaders two millennia ago, as Stephen was executed, was a young man named Saul. Saul was struck by the sublime courage that Stephen exhibited. The Great Escape is the opportunity for modern, pampered, well-fed American audiences, people like myself, to see what The Greatest Generation accomplished under hopeless conditions. In my mind, you will not find a better true story about fortitude, self-sacrifice, and valor than The Great Escape.   LINCOLN (2012): This is the true story of how an exhausted and disrespected Lincoln musters the will to fight on and pass the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery, showing his ability to accomplish what most thought impossible. Incredibly you feel yourself standing alongside this divinely inspired American hero President Lincoln. It’s a must-see.   FORREST GUMP (1994): The story of Forrest Gump, to me, is the quintessential story of faith, sacrifice, and courage under fire. It’s the story of unconditional love. It teaches about forgiveness and the power of goodness. It demonstrates masculine character too often ignored or denigrated today.     Too often today the Alamo is depicted as a bunch of American white-supremacists who oppressed the local population, hoping to “steal Mexican lands.”   This is tiring, simplistic, and woefully unfair. History rewritten.   Settlers in Texas were promised freedom and independence by the Mexican Government. In the spring of 1836, those who fortified the Alamo against the dictator General Santa Anna were patriots, many born and raised in Texas, native sons. And they understood they might not survive yet willingly stayed and fought to the death.   The Alamo proves the point. Americans will die on their feet rather than live on their knees.   May we remember the Alamo for what it truly stood for—and stands for today. These were free men and women. Never shackled.     37 - WASHINGTON'S MIRACLE MAN (Part 3/3) | Col. John Glover (Marblehead Mariners Commander) | Revolutionary War

    On the Pennsylvanian shore of the Delaware River, Washington conceived a desperate plan—to cross back over the river into New Jersey and attack a Hessian garrison of 1,200 men. The Hessians were German mercenaries fighting for the British.   Throughout that frigid night, Glover and his Marbleheaders rowed Washington’s Army across the ice-choked river, thought to be an impossible feat and attacked the Hessian Garrison, killing 100 and taking 900 Hessian soldiers as prisoners.   When the battle ended, General Washington turned to the doctor for his men, General Hugh Mercer, saying: “Hugh, we won a great victory today, but tell me…how many of my boys did I lose?     John Glover and his Marblehead Mariners, with seemingly impossible stealth, evacuated Washington’s entire army, all 9,000 men, across the East River onto Manhattan Island in nine hours during a single night!   How that happened became known as the Miracle of the Fog, for just as the British were preparing to attack, the river and shoreline were blanketed in a thick fog that “came out of nowhere” so that “men could not see ten feet ahead.”   By dawn, and then into midmorning, the mysterious fogbank suddenly disappeared, but not until every American and their weapons and equipment, were safely evacuated.   The British commander, General Howe, was at first disbelieving, then he seethed with frustration. He’d had Washington in his grasp, and just like that, he’d slipped away.   But to General Washington, he knew who to thank.     32 - THE PURE SON OF LIBERTY | Thaddeus Kosciuszko (Military Engineer) | Revolutionary War

    The massive British Army under the command of General John Burgoyne, was rushing to attack and destroy Washington’s Continental Army.   The Americans needed time to prepare.   And young Thaddeus with his unique skills would give the Americans that time.   Moving fast with his engineers and rangers, Thaddeus and his team cut trees in the path of the British, laid out traps and ambushes, built dams to flood the streams and rivers making the trails and roads ahead of the British Army impassable.   The British Army went from covering 60 miles per day to less than two! Bogged down, the powerful and proud British and Hessian forces suddenly found themselves the prey.   And at the ensuing Battle of Saratoga, the American Continental Army defeated the British soundly in the turning point in America’s War for Independence, much credited to a young immigrant to America who served without pay, fame, or glory.   His name was THADDEUS KOSCIUSZKO one of the least known, yet critical American Patriots from our illustrious past.
