April Theme: Gut Health & Happiness

Share your thoughts here! April is a season of renewal, and in alignment with the Happiness Project’s monthly themes, this is the perfect time to turn inward and focus on restoring one of the most powerful systems in your body: your gut.Often referred to as the “second brain,” your gut plays a critical role not just in digestion, but in your mental and emotional well-being. In this episode, we explore the deep connection between gut health, mood, and overall vitality, and how nurturing your microbiome can help you feel calmer, happier, and more energized. What You’ll Learn in This Episode:The Gut–Brain Connection: How your gut directly influences your mood through the production of key neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, the very chemicals responsible for feelings of happiness, motivation, and emotional stability. Why Gut Health Impacts Immunity: Nearly 70% of your immune system resides in your gut. A balanced microbiome strengthens your body’s defenses, while an imbalanced one can leave you more vulnerable to illness, inflammation, and fatigue. Hidden Toxins That Disrupt Your Gut: We break down how everyday exposures, such as herbicides, pesticides, synthetic chemicals, antibiotics, and antibacterial products, can damage your gut flora and reduce the diversity of beneficial bacteria. Foods That Heal & Nourish the Microbiome: Learn how to support your gut naturally by incorporating fiber-rich, prebiotic foods like onions, radishes, garlic, leafy greens, and other whole plant-based options that feed healthy bacteria and promote balance. Simple Shifts for Lasting Change: Small, intentional choices, like reducing processed foods, choosing organic when possible, and being mindful of unnecessary antibiotic use, can make a profound difference in your gut health and emotional resilience. Why This MattersWhen your gut is thriving, your mind follows. By focusing on healing and nourishing your microbiome, you’re not just improving digestion, you’re actively supporting your mental health, boosting your immune system, and creating a stronger foundation for lasting happiness. This April, let it be about more than just spring cleaning your home, consider it a reset for your body from the inside out.Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Why Eating Has Become So Confusing: Diet Culture, Social Media, and Raising Healthy Eaters

Share your thoughts here! As part of The Happiness Project’s March theme: Parenting, this episode explores one of the most complicated topics families face today...food.In this powerful conversation, I sit down with eating disorder specialist Jessica Setnick to unpack why eating has become so confusing in modern culture.Between diet culture, viral wellness trends, and social media influencers promoting extreme or rigid ideas about “healthy eating,” many people feel overwhelmed, anxious, or even guilty about what they put on their plate.Jessica shares an important truth: anyone who eats can potentially develop a struggle with food. This episode explores how these cultural pressures impact both adults and children, why so many families are struggling with picky eating and food battles, and how parents can create a healthier environment around food at home.Because when it comes to raising healthy and emotionally secure kids, our relationship with food matters more than we realize.Throughout March, The Happiness Project is focusing on the theme of parenting and raising emotionally healthy children.Food is one of the earliest places children begin to develop beliefs about their bodies, control, comfort, and self-worth. The way families talk about food, weight, and health can shape a child’s relationship with eating for years to come. This conversation fits perfectly with our Parenting theme because it helps families:• Understand how children develop food beliefs • Reduce stress and power struggles around meals • Support kids who are picky eaters • Avoid unintentionally passing down diet culture • Create a calmer, healthier home environment around foodWhen parents feel confident and informed, children are more likely to grow up with a balanced relationship with eating, their bodies, and themselves. In This Episode We Discuss• Why anyone who eats can potentially struggle with food • How diet culture has reshaped the way we think about eating • The confusing influence of social media nutrition advice • Why “clean eating” can sometimes become restrictive • The psychological impact of food rules and guilt • Early warning signs of disordered eating • Why picky eating develops in children • How parents can reduce mealtime stress • Ways to help kids build trust with hunger and fullness cues • What a healthy relationship with food actually looks likeKey TakeawayFood should nourish our bodies....not create fear, shame, or confusion. When parents model flexibility, curiosity, and balance around food, children learn that eating is simply part of living well—not something to control or fear.About the GuestJessica Setnick is a nationally recognized eating disorder specialist, registered dietitian, author, and educator who has spent decades helping individuals, families, and professionals better understand eating disorders and develop healthier relationships with food.If you’re enjoying these conversations, you’ll love being part of The Happiness Project community.Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Parenting, Forgiveness & Healing Your Inner Child: How to Create More Happiness in Your Life

Share your thoughts here! Parenting is one of the most powerful forces shaping our emotional well-being, but many people don’t realize that the way we relate to parenting, both as parents and as children, can deeply impact our happiness. In this episode, we explore the March theme of The Happiness Project: Parenting and why improving our parenting skills, healing our childhood wounds, and practicing forgiveness can dramatically increase our sense of peace, joy, and emotional freedom.Parenting doesn’t only apply to how we raise our children. It also includes how we re-parent ourselves, care for our inner child, and process the unmet needs we may still carry from childhood. Many of us were raised by parents who did the best they could with the tools they had, but that doesn’t mean our emotional needs were always met. Holding onto resentment, hurt, or unrealistic expectations can create emotional weight that affects our relationships, our stress levels, and our happiness.Learning to forgive our parents, forgive ourselves, and even forgive our children for not meeting our expectations can be incredibly freeing. When we release these emotional burdens, we create space for greater compassion, connection, and joy.In today’s world, parenting can feel incredibly overwhelming. A hundred years ago, families were surrounded by communities that helped raise children and supported parents emotionally and practically. Today, many people feel isolated and pressured to figure everything out on their own.But the truth is: you don’t have to do it alone.Seeking support, guidance, and connection can make a profound difference in your mental health, your parenting, and your overall happiness. That’s exactly why I created The Happiness Project Private Membership Community, a supportive space where we can learn, grow, and navigate life’s challenges together throughout 2026.Inside the community, we explore themes like parenting, relationships, forgiveness, stress management, emotional resilience, and personal growth so you can feel more grounded, supported, and empowered in your life.If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or like you’re carrying emotional burdens from the past, this episode will help you start shifting toward healing, compassion, and greater happiness. If you haven’t joined us yet, I’d love for you to come check it out.Join the community here: drsekandari.com/happiness-projectAnd remember...if it’s not the right fit for you, you can cancel anytime. You deserve support, connection, and happiness. From Lost to Purpose: Helping Young Men Build Confidence, Identity, and Healthy Relationships

Share your thoughts here! In this powerful and honest episode, we sit down with DJ Logory, founder of Be That Guy, to explore the growing mental health crisis among young men and how it’s impacting modern relationships.DJ shares his personal story of feeling lost in his early 20s despite having supportive parents—and how that experience opened his eyes to the silent struggles so many young men face today, including lack of direction, low confidence, and disconnection. This journey led him to create a movement that helps young men develop identity, purpose, and authentic self-confidence.We dive deep into the real conversations many people are afraid to have, including the effects of toxic masculinity, the overlooked impact of toxic femininity, and how both are contributing to a loneliness epidemic affecting both men and women. We also discuss the growing confusion around gender roles, dating, and how men and women relate to each other in today’s world.Additionally, we explore how the COVID era disrupted critical social development and communication skills, particularly for young men, and what that means for future relationships. This conversation offers a balanced, compassionate, and grounded perspective on mental health, identity, dating, masculinity, femininity, and emotional connection, giving listeners clarity, insight, and hope for building healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self.Follow DJ and learn more about the work he's doing by visiting: https://www.bethatguyclub.com/Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

The Happiness Project Progress Report: What’s Working for My Mind, Mood & Motivation

Share your thoughts here! This month inside The Happiness Project, I’m sharing the small but powerful changes I’ve been making that are shifting my energy....from the inside out and all around me.I start with something simple yet transformative: decluttering. Clearing physical space in my home has been helping me clear mental space too. I talk about how creating more order, intention, and beauty in my environment has subtly improved my mood, focus, and overall sense of calm, and why your surroundings matter more than you think when it comes to emotional well-being.But this month wasn’t just about creating comfort, but it was also about expanding my comfort zone.I took a big leap by flying solo across the country to attend Podfest 2026 in Orlando, Florida, a conference I had never been to before, and I did it with my dog for the first time.  Let’s just say… it was a learning experience to say the least. From navigating airports with a pup, to managing nerves, logistics, and expectations, this trip stretched me in the best ways and gave me new confidence in what I’m capable of.One of the biggest lessons? Take the chance....even when it feels small. I almost didn’t enter the contest for free Podfest tickets… but I did, and I actually won. That single decision opened the door to an experience filled with incredible people, meaningful conversations, and so much learning and inspiration.I’m excited to share that many of the amazing people I met there will be joining me on future episodes for powerful conversations around growth, creativity, mental wellness, and building aligned success. In this episode, you’ll hear about:How decluttering is improving my energy, clarity, and emotional stateWhy your environment plays a key role in your mental healthWhat it was really like flying solo cross-country with my dogThe courage it takes to say yes to new experiencesHow a simple contest entry turned into a major opportunityWhy expanding your comfort zone is essential for happiness and growthIf you’ve been craving more calm, clarity, or courage in your own life, this episode is your reminder that small shifts can create powerful momentum.✨ Tune in, reflect, and maybe take one small brave step of your own this week.Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Supporting Children With Anxiety with Ira Hays

Share your thoughts here! Anxiety can manifest differently in children compared to adults due to various factors such as cognitive development, communication abilities, and coping mechanisms. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for identifying and addressing anxiety in children effectively.Children might not have the vocabulary or cognitive ability to articulate their feelings accurately. They might express their anxiety through physical symptoms, avoidance behaviors, or changes in mood or behavior, such as irritability, clinginess, or excessive crying. Adults, on the other hand, can often verbalize their feelings more explicitly.Children may also not be able to identify the specific causes of their anxiety, whereas adults might have a better understanding of the triggers. Children might lack the coping skills that adults have developed over time. They might resort to behaviors like thumb-sucking, bed-wetting, or temper tantrums.Mr. Ira Hays is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a distinguished career in mental health and education, specializing in anxiety disorders, including school phobia and OCD. With a focus on anxiety disorder treatment, including CBT, DBT, KPMT, and ERP, Mr. Hays uses an empathetic approach and evidence-based interventions to empower his clients to conquer challenges and lead fulfilling lives. How To Be Over 40 & Fabulous with Katia Stern

Share your thoughts here! Your 40’s can be the most transformative or the most challenging decade of your life.  With perimenopause looming, and gravity having its way with you, the 40’s can be ridden with anxiety and stress.  OR this decade can be an opportunity to finally achieve the goals you’ve always strived for but no longer fear taking a risk.  Katia Stern challenged herself to make her 40’s the best decade yet.  At the age of 42, she entered a fitness bikini competition and at 46, she entered the Mrs. Canada competition. She was met with a lot of anxiety and doubt in herself but she pushed forward anyway.  Despite being scared and anxious, she pushed forward and challenged herself in a way she couldn’t even believe.  Small decisions lead to big actions.  Despite wondering “Who are you at 40 to be in a fitness competition?” Or  “ Who are you at almost 50 to be in a beauty pageant?”, Katia was determined to move forward.  Katia’s mentors, Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield , and Lisa Nichols from the movie “The Secret” have taught her the realistic way to visualize and manifest the life of her dreams. In this interview Katia teaches us how to become a WOW woman.  A woman that feels good in her body, that loves and takes care of her self, and a woman that feels confident in whatever age or shape she’s in.Katia’s solution to overcoming her anxiety is to take action.  Take action despite being terrified.  Take action even if you’re shaking with fear.  Take action even if you are not perfect.  Katia shares her experience with public speaking for the first time and says “Nobody knows how anxious I was.  Nobody knew how scared I felt but I went and did a great job and now…no more anxiety”.   Katia also addresses how anxiety limited the choices in her life in the past and how now she uses regrets to push her past her anxieties and fears.  Katia invested in her personal growth by hiring coaches to help her achieve her goals and overcome her anxiety.  Katia realized that not investing in herself was more costly than spending money on quality coaches that could guide her in the direction of her dreams.  To learn more about Katia, visit  drsekandaricom/56Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Intimate Partner Violence: Female Perpetrators with Ami Goodheart

Share your thoughts here! Ami Goodheart, a brilliant costume designer from Los Angeles, and past neighbor of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard joins me to talk about her personal experience with Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in a same sex relationship, shedding more light on female perpetrators of IPV.Although women are more likely to be victims of IPV with male perpetrators, 1 out of 10 men report to being victims of IPV with female partners.  This number is probably not an accurate representation due to the shame and stigma associated with reporting IPV by males.Ami also shares her personal experience with being believed while in a same sex relationship.  Lesbian victims are often not taken seriously when reporting abuse. We need to do better as a society and learn to believe all victims of domestic violence, REGARDLESS of gender.  It shouldn’t be “Believe All women” but believe ALL Victims! It’s also important to keep in mind that women being abusive and perpetrators of IPV is NOT an invitation to stop believing women but it should be an opportunity to better identify abusers regardless of gender. If you or someone you love is a victim of domestic violence, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline in the US at 800-799-7233 or visit thehotline.org for more information.  If you are in Canada, visit https://www.domesticshelters.org/To learn more about Ami, please visit drsekandari.com/50Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Understanding The Root Cause Of Fear With Dr. Nafisa Sekandari and Hosai Mojaddidi

Share your thoughts here! Thoughts of fear, whether real or imagined, can cause us to not move ahead with any of our dreams or goals 😨  Every human on earth at one time or another feels this “fear” and reverts back into their “safety” or comfort zone ⛑️.The system was created to protect us in times of real danger but we must learn to distinguish between real or imagined danger.  Most fears are illusions we create in our own heads, based on past conditioning and not based on what's possible.  As children, we are natural-born risk takers and for the most part, we are fearless. 💪When we feel fear, we're playing a mental track that's not conducive to growth.Understanding fear at the root  can lead to feeling more empowered and in control of our lives. This discussion, which originally aired on Mizan: Islam and EI on Clubhouse, addresses the debilitating impact fear can have on your life and how you can create long term control of your fear.  To learn more visit drsekandari.com/podcastFollow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Setting Achievable Goals For 2022 With Dr. Nafisa Sekandari

Share your thoughts here! So many people start the year off strong but by mid February they lose interest in their goals.  This usually has to do with not setting clear and specific goals that create motivation instead of overwhelm. In this episode I break down the steps you need to take to set goals that are achievable.  It starts by writing them down.  Getting a clear vision through writing your goals will activate your Reticular Activating System (RAS) to move towards accomplishing your goals.  One way to get clear is to break goals down in 5 categories and then write specific action steps beneath each category.  For example:1.)   Healtha. Cook meals at home 3 days a weekb.   Buy groceries based on the EWG’s Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen c.  Go to the gym 4 days a week2.) Relationshipsa. Improve communication skillsb.   Express myself more when I’m upset3.) Spiritualitya. Meditate moreb.   Wait an hour before checking emails and social mediac.    Document what I’m grateful for every day.4.) Financesa.  Automatically save $100 every monthb.   Have a budget of $_____ for entertainmentc.    Paying off credit card debt5.)  Careera.  Ask for a raise at workb.  Improve my skills in the area of ____c. Update my resume Your list can look similar or different than the list above but keep adding to each category so you have a very clear vision of what is required for each category.  Once you meet the goal, cross it off and add another goal. “Discipline weighs ounces, while regret weighs tons” ~Jim Rohn I have a beautiful FREE Downloadable journal planner that can help you stay on track with your goals.  To download your copy, visit drsekandari.com/plannerFollow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

We as a society are more isolated and lonelier than ever but no group is impacted more than the elderly and the youth in our communities.Eric Peterson and Professor Jason Powell are trying to end that one match at a time.Together they’ve come up with a program to help the youth not only gain mentorship from the elders in the community but to also provide friendship and companionship.Eric and Professor Jason developed Seniors4Seniors, a program which brings together the older adults and youth in our communities, enabling enriching, real human connections. This program establishes connections between individuals with shared interests, with a focus on career aspirations of the youth that correspond to career backgrounds of the older adults. This is a unique approach that enables relationships that truly touch the human heart and mind.A recent article from Harvard addresses the impact social isolation has on memory and overall cognition. The past two years have made the holidays feel even more isolating. This holiday will continue to be impacted due to the pandemic so we need to do our part to making sure the seniors in our community are not isolated and lonely.  You can do your part by reaching out to your parents and grandparents but you can also send cards and make phone calls to other family members as well. We as a society are more isolated and lonelier than ever but no group is impacted more than the elderly and the youth in our communities.Learn more about seniors4seniors by visiting   https://www.drsekandari.com/44Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariWatch Video Recording on YoutubeTo learn more about the Happiness Project visit https://www.drsekandari.com/happiness-project

Cultural Stigma & Mental Health With Vanessa Yang

Share your thoughts here! In many cultures, including many Asian cultures, the focus tends to be on physical health and mental health is rarely discussed.  Vanessa Yang, the CEO and Founder of 1st Mentor Street, a mentorship program for youth, joins me to talk about how her Chinese background made it difficult to talk about mental health and wellness and how she’s now helping teens navigate their mental and physical health as they figure out life in general.  Vanessa addresses the excessive comparison of ability with other kids leading to insecurity and depression without any mental health support.  The “model minority” status with the Asian culture creates a lot of pressure to succeed without consideration for mental health and wellness. There’s also an unspoken rule about not complaining or expressing sadness about life stressors.  Stress for success with immigrant families leads to high suicide rate.Vanessa also addresses what to do if your family doesn’t believe in mental health support and how you can improve your coping skills. The Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Parenting with Nichol Mills

Share your thoughts here! Through the sharing of her own history starting with conception, Nichol Mills, a life coach, talks about Trauma Incident Reduction and how that helped her put the pieces of her life together. Focusing on the goal of releasing the emotional charge with Trauma Incident Reduction, Nichol continued to process her own trauma surrounding her complicated and at times abusive relationship with her mother and used the lessons to be a more intentional parent to her own children. Trying to understand her mother in relationship to the trauma she’s experienced has helped Nichol better understand her own childhood and upbringing with a mother who couldn’t advocate for her own child.Learning to set firm but healthy boundaries with her mother has helped Nichol prioritize her needs in all relationships.   Nichol shares “If I didn’t have the mom that I had, I wouldn’t be who I am” and is grateful for becoming more compassionate and ultimately a more present and loving mother to her children as a result of her relationship with her mother.     Nichol talks about getting the love and nurturing she needed from mother figures who, though not her biological mother, were able to provide her with the love and validation her mother wasn’t able to give her. These parental figures helped Nichol become  a better parent to her 2 children.  Nichol continues to put herself out there and becomes vulnerable despite the fears that come up. Tune in to learn more about Nichol’s amazing journey from abuse and neglect to empowerment and confidence. Activating The Vagus Nerve With Amber Reed

Share your thoughts here! Stress can literally kill us if left untreated or unmanaged.Stress will also make it impossible for us to heal since it shuts down our immune system and puts us in the fight or flight mode.  This chronic level of stress creates barriers for healing.  Amber K. Reed,  a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach, joins me to talk about the importance of creating a safe space for your body so it can start the healing process. Her own health challenges forced Amber to address stress directly and through the process she has been trained in modalities that focus on stress management directly. Learning to manage her own stress and making lifestyle changes at the gut level helped her heal from fibromyalgia, inflammation, and mental health distress.  In this episode, Amber  breaks down the difference between the sympathetic nervous system and the para-sympathetic nervous system and the role they play in our health and well being. There’s a connection between our gut and our stress response and our interpretation of stress impacts our gut and digestion more than the actual stressor. Amber also teaches us about the impact the Vagus nerve, a cranial nerve that starts at the base of our spine and touches every organ in our body, has on our ability to manage stress.  Learning to activate the vagus nerve can improve our physical and mental health.
