Happy Tuesday everyone, I hope you've all had a nice start to your week and had a great weekend. It's been a bloody busy past few days for me filled with footy, footy and more footy. Very lucky for what I get to do and it has brought upon so many wonderful opportunities. One of those opportunities was getting to connect with someone from the AFL world in the development space and I heard something from this person that just resonated me with and is something that can apply to all of us. "Don't get bored of the basics" We are all capable of achieving great things but we all want it to happen so fast and generally, what seperates the best from the rest, is that fact that the greats don't get bored of the basics. They do the little things time and time again and fall in love with the process, no matter how long it takes. So I just wanted to share that chunk of gold with you all and hope it can help you in your pursuit of greatness in whatever walk of life you're from. Happy Monday, I hope you all had a nice weekend and are taking it easy at work today or are just relaxing if you have the day off. Another shoutout this week to someone who has excelled on the sporting field this past weekend. My brother Johann, or "Yoey", as he is more commonly known, has had a successful time on the footy field at the SA Country Footy Champs down in Victor Harbour representing the Eyre Peninsula. He has had a bloody good footy career and at the ripe old age of 33, he was the leading goal kicker for the carnival and has been named in the team of the carnival as well. Hopefully you have earnt another selection to the SA Country State Team after your efforts. Really proud of you brus, keep on doing what you're doing and making those around you better and fingers crossed we get to see you on Adelaide Oval again in a couple weeks! Mental health has been a common topic on this podcast. Guests have opened up about their struggles and I've shared some stories and strategies regarding my mental health on many of these weekly episodes. This week's episode is no different as it's Men's Mental Health Week. Whilst these weeks are excellent in shining a light on the facts and figures, they mean next to fuck all if we don't take action and actually check in on our mates and loved ones. Good morning everyone, apologies for my absence of late on your Monday mornings but I'm back with another episode of Extra Sauce. A pretty real chat today on my drive to work where I do a lot of my thinking. We are in a mental health crisis in this country. Recent statistics show that 8 Australians die by suicide every day, 75% of those are men. So by the end of today, by the time you listened to this episode, someone has potentially taken their life. We likely all know of someone who has taken their life and the massive impact this has on their loved ones. The politician's won't help us. The change we want starts with us. We must take this seriously and start having real, meaningful conversations with each other about how we are feeling. If we don't do this, then the stats stay the same. We have to help our mates, we have to do it for those who have left us and for the future generations as well. Otherwise, more of us will die. If you need support, reach out to a mate and on the flipside, if you know if someone who is likely struggling, hit them up for a chat. And don't forget to reach out to the relevant support hotlines that we have in Australia as they can provide support at all hours. Damn it's good to be back on the tools and sitting down chatting with awesome people again. And what a guest to kick us off after the break! This is an excellent read if you're a sports coach or a leader in your work. It touches on how to create a sense of belonging for those you coach or lead and has real world examples as it delves into organisations such as the San Antonio Spurs, Google and Pixar I highly recommend this book if you're wanting to improve as a coach or leader. Guest episode number 19 is here and it's one I've been trying to get done since September last year, so I'm pumped to have finally sat down with Daniel Kwaterski for this episode! Daniel is just your typical aussie guy that is from the country. He was always the life of the party. Having a good time, making everyone laugh and always smiling. However, that was all a mask. Underneath that, Daniel was struggling with significant mental health battles and it got to a point where he thought he could no longer be on this earth. If weren't for the words of a friend which led him to seeking professional health, Daniel's story may have gone untold. Since working through his personal struggles, Daniel has been a shining light in the community, helping to raise awareness for mental health and also raising close to $20k for Mindfull Aus in 2023. Daniel did this by completing the Pichi Richi Marathon, and then continuing to run an extra 58km's to crack the 100km mark! Daniel is a seriously good human who has been through some extremely challenging times and he is someone we should all look to for inspiration. Jaslynne Smith is a hardworking, kind, respectful and thoughtful person who sets a fantastic example for students follow in her role as Student Mentor at SEDA College SA. When Jas isn’t in the classroom building strong relationships, you can find her dominating on the footy field for the South Adelaide Football Club where she is a 2-time premiership player (2018 & 2019) and, along with wanting to win another flag, she has the ambition of being the first player to reach 100 games in the SANFLW in the next few seasons. Jas mentioned off-air that she feels she “hasn’t had many struggles compared to others” but Jas has made the most of her opportunities in life and continues to lead by example when it comes to being a good human and working hard to get the most out of life. Well, here is the first guest episode of 2024! Episode number 15 and again, another fantastic guest. Brody Burrows lives in rural SA and has been chasing his dream of becoming a sports broadcaster for some time now. He has been a writer for the local paper in Port Lincoln, been a presenter on the radio, commentated local footy grand finals and has started his own media company called Straya Sport. He even has his own podcast with AFL legend Spida Everitt! Seriously, this guy has worked his backside off in pursuit of his dream and is now currently leading the social accounts for Tennis Australia during the Australian Open. Amazing stuff from someone from rural SA. But above all of that, Brody is a wonderful family man who has experienced the amazing highs, and heartbreaking lows of parenthood with his amazing partner Lisa. This chat gets pretty raw and real and I am grateful Brody shared his story with me and the listeners. I set goals within the four main pillars that I always do, and they are: - Physical Health - Mental Health - Knowledge & Learning - Personal Endeavour I find if I aim achieving goals within these four pillars, then I am generally in a great state of mind which that then flows into all other walks of life such as my career, relationships and footy. I highly recommend that you take some time to sit down and reflect on 2023, think about what went well and what could have been better, and then write out some goals that you want to work towards in 2024. Welcome to the last episode of Straight to The Sauce for 2023. I am really happy I got to sit down and chat with such an awesome person for this one! Jack Symes lives in regional Victoria and has lived a few lives in his short 28 years. He has served in the Australian Defence Force, won a couple of footy grand finals, ran 100km's to raise money for Mindfull Aus and along the way he has dealt with his own mental health struggles as well experienced the loss of his best mate from suicide. Jack talks openly about all of this, he really leads by example in this space, and I am so grateful he gave up some of this time in his busy schedule to come on the pod. Now I understand that talking about suicide and mental health can be confronting for some, and if you need to talk about it then please reach out to the relevant support lines in Australia such as Lifeline. However, Jack and I believe it is extremely important that we have these difficult conversations with those around us so that we can be the change we want to see in society. We have to start talking. Happy Monday everyone, I hope you had a nice weekend and managed to stay dry here in SA! I put the toes up on the couch all weekend long, which was bloody nice, and capped the weekend off with a glass of red, from First Drop Wines, and a roast! In this ep I'll share my experience from last Friday, getting out of my comfort zone with my mate Walshy, at Strong Pilates in Port Adelaide! Never done pilates before and this was another level of fitness. Episode 9 is here and in this one I sat down with my great mate, Bailey Turner, who is a young lad who has grown up in the country, a dual citizen of the Eyre Peninsula and the Yorke Peninsula. In this chat there are plenty of laughs but Bailey also openly speaks about the passing of a loved one through suicide and how that has had an impact on his mental health. Coming from a rural area where the mantra, especially for males, is usually “I’ll be right” and “just get on with the job”, Bailey casts that stigma aside as he gets extremely raw in this chat and talks about his experience of when he tried to seek professional help. This was one of the toughest chats I’ve had in my life, Bailey showed so much vulnerability and rawness. I only hope I handled the moment with respect and made him feel comfortable. Excess screen time can be extremely detrimental to our mental and physical health. We are the most connected society in history but at the same time, we are the most disconnected as well. This week I have wasted so much time scrolling on TikTok, Insta and Twitter. It's so easy to just put the feet up on the couch and think "ah just 10 minutes on TikTok won't hurt"... next thing ya know it's been two hours, ya eyes are cooked and you're watching videos about how to survive in the jungle with nothing but a toothpick and a sponge. So if you regularly find yourself glued to your phone or laptop, then have a listen to hear some little tips that I try to implement to reduce my screen time and work to improve my overall health and wellbeing.
