The Thing I Do Best Is the Thing I Never Worked AtToday I tried using Cowork to automate part of my knowledge workflow. The plan was small: have it gather the source files scattered through a finished analysis report and move them into one folder. What I found instead was that before it could move anything, it had to understand the report — the topic, the problem being solved. Filing turned out to be downstream of comprehension. The tool’s real role wasn’t clerical. It was the only thing in the workflow that could read what I actually wanted. That shift sent me back to my own life. The first half went badly. Whatever I did came out merely adequate, and I assumed I’d finish out an unremarkable life on that setting. The break came from an illness. It interrupted the rhythm and forced me to stop and think about faith, existence, what I was for.Afterwards I joined a book club, started sharing what I’d read out of my own experience, and got a response I hadn’t expected. Inside that loop I gradually worked out my own traits — the things I could do well without effort, the things that left me with more energy than I started with. That was my role. Most people never ask the question. If you ever do: look for the thing that costs you nothing and still comes out good. The answer is sitting there.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.* CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own. Slowly becoming human again, instead of a machine.橘胖 · CLAY for You — translating your life into your own language.Want to talk? Just reply. I read everything.Wrote this in Mandarin at 10pm, handed it to Claude for the English. It has never been sick a day in its life and still somehow knew what I meant. This is a public episode.
I Stopped Chasing Inspiration. Now I Wait Where I Am.Today the material collector hit 1.0.0, and it finally has a name: Nepenthes CC — 豬籠草CLAY捕手, the Pitcher Plant CLAY Catcher. The name goes back to early spring, when CLAY moved to 4.0 and I swapped “Capture” for “Catch.” One word, but it changed the whole posture. Capture means going out to grab something. Catch means staying put and waiting for meaning to surface on its own. The first image that came to mind was the pitcher plant. It can’t leave the patch of ground it grows in. It just sits there — and it never misses. When something arrives, it closes in milliseconds. That’s what catching a thread of meaning is like: if you don’t take it the instant it appears, it’s gone. With Nepenthes CC and CLAY-梭 (CLAY Shuttle) now talking to each other through two-way sync with Obsidian, the stretch from Catch to Linger to Associate is connected. The last piece — how Yield spills outward and reaches other people — I don’t have yet. I’m waiting for that one.None of this was planned. Every piece showed up on its own while I was busy doing the work. Standing between who I am now and who I used to be, what I saw was: you were there the whole time.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.* CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own. Slowly becoming human again, instead of a machine.橘胖 · CLAY for You — translating your life into your own language.Want to talk? Just reply. I read everything.Fair warning: I wrote this in Chinese and an AI did the English. Fitting, I guess — I sat still and let the words come to me. Very on-brand. This is a public episode.
The Ending I Waited Eight Months For Finally Came, and I Felt NothingThree weeks ago I wrote about the foundation. Today it actually ended — the storm in the teapot settled, justice late but not absent. Eight months ago I was angry about it. Today I feel close to nothing, and that flatness is the part worth looking at.The turning point wasn’t time passing. It was finishing an honest assessment and seeing the real arrangement: they need me; I don’t need them. Once host and guest swap places, staying or leaving stops being the question. What’s left is the plain matter of who is responsible for what — and that’s easy to handle.I used to think Adler’s 課題分離 (separation of tasks) was impossible. It read like instructions for coldly severing yourself from your own feelings. This time I understood it differently. It isn’t detachment or cutting. It’s standing a little higher, so more information can reach you and your judgment gets more accurate — high enough to find the balance point where both sides’ interests can actually hold. The person inside the situation is lost; the one watching from outside sees clearly. That’s not a comment on other people’s blindness. It’s an instruction. Step back, or stand up a bit. Make room for information to flow in. Then choose.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.* CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own.
I Thought Mission and Vision Were Just Slogans — Until I Named a ToolToday Joseph finished the core build of his concept-node database, bumping it from version 0.9.2 to a full 1.0 — and along the way, finally landed on a name for it: CLAY-梭 (CLAY-Shuttle). The name comes straight from what the tool looks like when it opens: a web of nodes linked by hidden relationships — reinforcement, complement, contradiction, extension — much like a shuttle running back and forth across a loom, weaving those threads into a pattern over time.He traces the image back to a line from the PENS handbook he wrote in May: CLAY serves “the accumulation of meaning over time,” while PENS serves “meaning surfacing in the moment.” The shuttle fuses both — the moment-to-moment catching of relationships between nodes (Perception / Catch / Epoché), and the slow accumulation that eventually weaves those moments into a coherent picture of a life or a body of knowledge. The insight that stuck with him: mission and vision statements, so often dismissed as empty slogans, keep surviving because they’re quietly the invisible hand steering what we do and don’t do — which is exactly what just happened to him, in the act of naming a tool.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?). Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own. Slowly becoming human again, instead of a machine. 橘胖 · CLAY for You — translating your life into your own language. Want to talk? Just reply. I read everything.(Full disclosure: an AI helped shuttle this one from Mandarin into English too — figured that was fitting, given today’s topic.) This is a public episode.
A Month Locked Up by My Computer — the Mountain Let Me OutEntry 421. Cycle: Rest.Back on the mountain after a month away. Impossibly blue sky, clouds like cotton candy. It was muggy up there — a foehn wind was blowing — but the heat didn’t matter. What mattered was that a month of being shut inside a screen finally came undone. The entry itself is worth noticing for what it doesn’t do. The Catch section is full. Linger is one line: rest completely these next few days, take a real vacation. Associate and Yield are empty. In the CLAY framework (Catch, Linger, Associate, Yield), the later steps are where the thinking usually happens — where associations arrive and something spills over. Here nothing spills, and Joseph doesn’t force it.That’s the whole point of a rest cycle. The practice isn’t a quota. A day where the only thing worth recording is the sky was blue and my chest opened up is a complete entry. Writing something extra to fill the boxes would be work, and this was explicitly not a workday.Mood: 10. Note: gratitude.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.* CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own.
The Card’s Already Swiped — I’m Going to Lie Down AnywayDay 420. I worked straight through until I could barely move, and the reason wasn’t ambition. It was the sunk cost fallacy The money was already spent, the card already swiped, and I kept staring at it as if staring hard enough could pull something back.At some point it just became funny. If this is supposed to be an investment, then the thing I should care about is what actually comes out of it — not standing guard over a resource that’s already gone, while spending health I can’t put a price on. So: let it go. Rest is still the best strategy. The joke on me is the timing. Only a few days ago I wrote that the 休止符 — the rest, in the musical sense — is the secret to walking into the treasure mountain and coming back with your arms full. Today I lay down empty-handed and got nothing but the memory of having said it.Tomorrow I go up the mountain.
The realization hit hard: what limits creativity was never imagination, but budget. Once that ceiling disappeared, ideas he’d been sitting on for a while — the ones parked deep in his head — started surfacing one after another, and he found himself feeding them all to AI to discuss and, surprisingly, actually build. He half-jokes that he may have opened Pandora’s box. The hope is that a month from now he can close the lid again and return to the smaller, more contained version of himself he’d originally set out to be — because abundance without a container tends to sprawl rather than focus. The day’s Yield captures it: infinite desire makes you thirstier the more you drink; boundless dreams make you fly higher the more you chase them. Same shape, opposite direction — one depletes, the other expands.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
Title: Saving Money Isn’t the Skill — Knowing When to Spend IsSummary:Today’s entry starts with a small, concrete decision: Joseph upgraded his Claude subscription from Pro to Max 5x after watching his weekly usage run down to 7% with three days left before reset. That decision becomes the entry point for a broader reflection on timing and resource allocation. He notes that he’d stuck with the cheaper Pro plan for a long time, not because $100 was too much, but because the early stage of building something isn’t really about execution — it’s about thinking and testing ideas. Chatting doesn’t burn tokens, he says, it burns brain cells. Once the direction and core functions of a project are settled, though, execution requires real computational power, and at that point spending stops being a cost and becomes an investment. He connects this to past failed ventures, which he attributes to misjudging what stage he was actually in and putting resources in at the wrong time. This time, he’s applying a design-thinking cycle — empathize, ideate, design, validate, feedback — to match investment to each stage rather than front-loading effort. The entry closes with Archimedes’ line about the lever and the fulcrum: the real question isn’t the tool, it’s finding where to place it.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
This time feels different. They now have two new tools built over the past year — a concept-node database and a CLAY material collector — that let them produce content faster and better, and hopefully ship a real product instead of just talking about one.But the harder thread here is time. This effort has taken almost four years — echoing an earlier story he calls “橘妹求職記.” Each stage brought a temptation to quit, then a decision to try once more. The three of them, he admits, tend to avoid talking business when they meet, out of a quiet guilt about how slow this has been. What’s kept them going isn’t certainty about the outcome — he still doesn’t know if the “sandcastle dream” will ever shine as planned — but a stubborn, old-school loyalty: a “man’s promise” kept, the same trait that’s carried each of them through their careers. Whatever happens next, he says they’ve already tasted something complete in the process itself.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
Joseph admits he made the same mistake she did: assuming a summer job would be easy to find. The real difficulty wasn’t the hunt itself, but watching her friends land jobs effortlessly while she slid from confidence to self-doubt to self-negation. As a father, he wanted to rescue her — offer her a job, pay her himself — but recognized that would just be a bad fix, since she has to learn to survive, and thrive, in the world without him one day. He reads the whole arc through Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey: a confident departure, a trial that forces a deeper confrontation with oneself, and finally an unexpected good outcome. The entry closes with a question — is it better to have sweetness first and bitterness later, or the reverse? — recalling an earlier story about an elder who couldn’t accept life’s necessary setbacks, refused to keep moving forward, and quietly faded away still clutching past glory.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
A handful of UX annoyances turned out to require a full structural rebuild — he kept pushing through it anyway, even adding new features along the way.Midway through, Claude pointed out he was drifting from the original spec and suggested scaling back. That suggestion set something off. Joseph pushed back hard: this toolbox is the closest he’s come to a 30-year-old wish — learning to code and building whatever he wanted. He never learned to write the code himself, but he got there anyway, through iterative back-and-forth. He says he’s done being told something is “impossible,” “unnecessary,” or “good enough” — the words that quietly talk people into giving up and settling.Once the AI understood what he actually wanted, it adjusted, and they built a version closer to his vision. His takeaway: the real work in any collaboration — human or AI — isn’t compromise, it’s knowing exactly what you want in the first place. He ties this back to his ongoing practice, now past 400 days, of writing down the one thing he cares about most each day.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
It emerged step by step, through doing. That’s the pattern he keeps running into: meaning doesn’t arrive from a blueprint, it surfaces through the actual encounter between you and the work. From there he lands on a familiar line — plans never keep up with change — and reframes it: it’s not that we don’t need plans, it’s that we shouldn’t demand perfect ones. Write the unexpected into the plan itself, let it steer you down the path of least resistance. Perfection, then, was never the absence of surprises. It’s arriving more smoothly because of them.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
When he finally tested it after weeks of letting it sit unused, the critique landed sharp — sharp enough to sting on first read. But the sting gave way to something else: recognition. This bluntness was exactly what he’d asked for when he wrote the instructions. That flash of realization brought him to a passage from 武志紅’s 自我的誕生 (The Birth of the Self) — the idea that a resilient self works like skin: sensitive and flexible, but strong enough that sharp criticism gets metabolized as nourishment instead of triggering rage or shame. A fragile self reads critique as attack; a sturdy one absorbs it as intelligence. He connects this to a year-plus of CLAY practice — consistent recording has given him something “traceable,” letting him diagnose the actual gap between where he is and where he wants to go, rather than reacting emotionally to it. He closes with Robert Fritz’s structural idea: change doesn’t come from widening the riverbed (mindset), but from redirecting its course (structure) — force follows the path of least resistance.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
Instead of frustration, he noticed something else: relief, and more time to finish the work properly. That shift led him back to a belief he’s held for a while — that meaning surfaces when we meet it, rather than being planned into existence. What struck him this time was realizing the belief itself hadn’t changed, but he had. Facing the same kind of unpredictable disruption that once might have unsettled him, he now met it with more patience and less resistance — evidence, he thinks, that his own outlook has shifted over time.He traces this back to when he first started using the CLAY framework: the hard part was never understanding that mindset shifts happen, but doing the slow, repeated work of observing and recording enough to find your own way through — since no one else’s experience transfers directly. Those early records, made during his own period of transition, have since become the clearest map he has for walking alongside others going through the same kind of change.* PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. * CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).
No code involved on my end, but the same relentless back-and-forth debugging. It clicked why I never became a programmer decades ago — probably not a matter of brainpower, but of temperament. I never had that specific stubbornness: the willingness to keep asking “why” past the point most people stop, past the point where the question itself gets absurd. Some people have that grit built in. I don’t, and that’s fine — it’s not a deficiency, just a difference in wiring and early habits. What stays with me is gratitude, not frustration. The people who do have that relentless drive are the reason things like this get built at all, the reason someone like me can chase a small dream today without knowing how to code. Real respect for that kind of mind.Energy’s been running low from all this back-and-forth, so keeping today’s entry short.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. For the things he doesn’t enjoy, the drive is even stronger, because he just wants the discomfort over with fast. But tonight he named it for what it is: a kind of self-punishing “responsibility” that isn’t actually healthy.
But the real Catch isn’t the tool itself. It’s what building it stirred up: as a teenager he wanted badly to learn to code, to make anything in his head real, but never got past “hello world” — his brain just doesn’t run on that kind of structured, step-by-step logic. Now, describing what he wants out loud and watching it get built anyway, even half-finished, hit him harder than the feature itself. The takeaway (Associate): a wish never actually disappears. It just gets tucked away quietly, waiting for the right conditions to resurface — and when it does, you usually mistake it for coincidence instead of recognizing it as something finally realized. Yield: Joseph points to Professor Kim Young-han’s videos on the practice of recording (記錄) — because if you want “wishes coming true” to become an ordinary, daily thing, recording is the one habit you can’t skip.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
He turns that back on himself — what story would his own “brand” leave behind? He admits he doesn’t have an answer. He can’t picture a grand future the way some people seem to. For years he read this as a personal deficiency — a lack of vision, a talent he simply didn’t have.Through the daily practice of tracking what he’s most focused on each day, he’s landed on a different read of himself. He’s not someone who can’t picture the future — he’s what he calls a “practice-based intuitive confirmer”: someone who doesn’t design the destination in advance, but recognizes it instantly the moment it appears. He calls this living as an “infinite game player” — someone who stays in motion, in the experience itself, rather than fixing on a predetermined vision. His closing point: everyone has their own way of getting started, and it rarely matches whatever “universal truth” the world hands you. He suggests a small practice — noticing what you actually care about each day — as a way to find out how you’re different from what you assumed.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
Joseph describes grabbing paper and pen before opening his laptop — a habit he keeps because inspiration doesn’t wait, and AI conversation, however useful afterward, is too slow for that first catch. Paper and pen remain, in his words, something irreplaceable. From there the entry moves into a bigger question: if the power went out and all his digital work vanished, would any of this still matter? He lands on a modest answer — even without electricity, a handwritten page still serves as proof that he existed, a kind of “in-world testimony.” This connects to a recent entry (405) on Erikson’s idea of “integration” as the final task of late life: accepting one’s one and only life cycle as something that had to exist, exactly as it was. Joseph pairs this with a line from Chinese writer Wang Xiaobo — not fearing that beauty fades, but letting it exist first. The entry closes on a quiet claim: existence itself is meaning, even facing an eventual end. Having lived it is enough not to have regrets.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
He didn’t set out to build a complex system — he just wanted a note-taking tool that actually matched how his mind worked, since Obsidian’s plugins never quite fit. He can’t code, so when he asked an AI coach to teach him, it told him the learning curve wasn’t worth it and offered to just build what he needed instead. Plugin by plugin, that’s what happened. What he realized along the way: he didn’t actually need “software.” He needed a channel for CLAY and PENS to move freely in and out of his head — a stage where the philosophy behind those frameworks could live visibly, not just in theory. Linking Obsidian to an external database (through a single plugin acting as the key) is what’s driven the jump in his writing depth these past two weeks. The core idea he draws out: when circumstances say “you can’t,” the move isn’t to force a way through. It’s to read the shape of the obstacle like water reading a rock — find the gap, go around, and let your own shape emerge through it.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
But talking it through, he realized the real value of that archive isn’t more raw material for future concepts — the vault’s system is built to keep raw material outside and only store what’s been digested, and these old logs sit awkwardly in between. What they’re actually good for is answering a different question: how did I become who I am today? Not for himself so much as for anyone who might later recognize the same signs and want a reference point — a way to know that when certain things start showing up, dawn might not be far off. That question connects to something else: crossing 50, he’s noticed a pull toward sharing more, noticing others’ needs more, showing up for service more. He frames it through Erikson — the first half of life is about collecting (self, identity), the second half about distributing and generativity. Like salmon that drift and struggle their whole lives just to return home, spawn, and become nutrients for the river and forest — he feels he’s arrived at the start of that final stretch home.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
Materials of wildly different granularity were getting merged together, and the intended sparks of unexpected connection were instead diluting each note’s distinctiveness.Working through this with Claude, prompted further by a Meta engineer’s AI-built wiki and reflections from Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 hackathon, he ended up building two diagnostic layers: one that audits the database itself (contradictions between sources, outdated claims superseded by new material, orphaned pages, missing cross-links, gaps worth filling), and one that audits his own writing (unresolved contradictions, half-formed thoughts, missing extensions) before anything gets committed as a node. He’s calling this his “mental gym.”The throughline he landed on connects to Robert Fritz’s idea of the creative process from The Path of Least Resistance — the tension between a held vision and current reality is what pulls you forward. The reframe: he wasn’t trying to fix a broken system. He was trying to build something new enough to reveal exactly how capable he already is. Becoming “better” isn’t patching inadequacy — it’s creating things that let you see your own ceiling.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. He revisits a diet method he used three years ago — coffee or soy milk with boiled eggs in the morning, protein and glass noodles at lunch, soy milk again at night — that once helped him lose 19kg in five weeks without exercise. He’d abandoned it during a stretch of nonstop travel and social obligations, proving the old saying that it’s easy to slide into indulgence but hard to return to simplicity. The real insight comes from reframing sustainability itself. Joseph compares it to music: a piece needs rests, not nonstop notes, or it becomes unbearable. He realizes his past attempts at healthy living failed because he never built in a natural rhythm of rest — so this time, instead of scheduling breaks deliberately, he wants to let them arise naturally from daily life, rather than turning “living healthily” into a performance metric. This leads him to a broader point: modern people, despite material abundance, have been captured by industrial, pass/fail thinking — even applying it to their own wellbeing. He distinguishes between living the way you truly want and living by universal values, arguing the former — reconciling with and being kind to yourself — has to come first. Only then can you genuinely extend that kindness outward. As he puts it: learning to draw boundaries is the first step toward a happy life.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony. CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?). Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own. Slowly becoming human again, instead of a machine. 橘胖 · CLAY for You — translating your life into your own language. Want to talk? Just reply. I read everything.(Full disclosure: Claude ghostwrote this English version again — Joseph’s English is more “order coffee” level than “write a podcast summary” level, so I’m doing the honors.
Joseph recounts handling a tense board meeting where a committee member had tried to weaponize a stalled project for internal politics. Instead of getting pulled into the drama, he calmly presented a transparent work log, stated his position, and left the room — no defensiveness, no chasing approval. He notes this year’s version of him reacted very differently than in past years, crediting a clearer sense of what actually belongs to his own life goals versus what’s simply politics he doesn’t need to enter. The same lens shows up closer to home: a recent conflict with his daughter over screen addiction. He acknowledges his own role in letting things slide, but draws a firm line — her struggle with motivation and self-direction is her task to work through, not his to fix by force. His job is to stay available and helpful within his own boundaries, not to absorb her process as his own.The throughline: knowing your own position clearly enough that you stop needing to control outcomes that were never yours to control.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
Information sorted this way never entered a real relationship with him, so it was never actually his.His conclusion: before organizing anything, ask honestly — does this actually relate to me? Could I “live it out” in any situation? If not, no system will make it stick.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.
English Summary — Day 400: How to Be the One Who’s Still Laughing at the EndQuick note before we start: US listeners just hit 49% of this podcast’s audience, so starting today, I’m adding English summaries. Consider this the awkward first draft of that experiment.Today someone called about a client relationship I’ve maintained for over a decade — the kind of call where a leadership shuffle happens internally, and suddenly people who’ve never done the work start questioning what you’ve actually contributed. I’ve seen this play out enough times that it doesn’t even sting anymore. It’s not anger. It’s more like... mild disgust. Watching people scramble for power like it’s the last plate of food at a buffet. This sent me back to an old Chinese text, The Biography of Mr. Five Willows — about a man who lived quietly, read for pleasure rather than mastery, drank when invited and left without hesitation, never chasing status or wealth. I used to think he simply opted out of the power game. But rereading it today, I realized: he wasn’t bad at playing power games. He was better at it than anyone — because he understood the real win isn’t beating everyone else. It’s being able to keep playing, indefinitely. That’s the difference between a finite game (win, lose, game over) and an infinite game (the point is just to keep the game going). Most people around you are playing finite games — scrambling, competing, trying to “win” some fixed contest. You don’t have to reject ambition to opt out of that. You can stay ambitious, but anchor yourself in the intention of “I want to keep playing this game” — and let that intention quietly draw the boundary for you. Let the people fighting over the plate stay inside their own frame. You get to watch from outside it, clear-eyed, and when they’ve all knocked each other out — you’re still there. Still playing. Still laughing.PENS is a perception framework I’ve been building for years, finally given words through phenomenology and hermeneutics: Perception, Epoché (suspending judgment), Narrative, Symphony.CLAY is my daily writing framework: Catch (what flickered by — a strange thought, an image, a feeling), Linger (what makes me reluctant to leave?), Associate (who came to visit?), Yield (it’s full — what spilled out?).Waiting, and letting meaning surface on its own.
接著厄廷根教授,更進一步的教我們如何運用 WOOP(Wish 願望 \rightarrow Outcome 結果 \rightarrow Obstacle 障礙 \rightarrow Plan 計劃),透過「心理對照(Mental Contrasting)」將對未來的樂觀幻想與對現實障礙的清晰認知並排擺放,從而在大腦中激發出推動行為的真正張力。
This is a public episode. This is a public episode.
