by Michael Boezi
Finding connection where it’s not immediately obvious. This podcast is a companion to (ART)ICULATE, operating instructions for a leaderless collective of artists & optimists (that's you!) who will reimagine and rewrite the roadmap of our future. We need artists now more than ever. I include episodes with demos, early versions, and process shots of a songwriter in action. True human connection is hampered by the way we consume, share, and produce media. We need to embrace smaller spaces and leave legacy systems, letting them fade into irrelevance (like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). This show shares selected episodes with my long-running legacy podcasts: "Consider the Source" & "Marketing Without the Marketing."

Read Me Out: Put an End to This Episode
It's clear we're at the End of Something. Dying democracy, rise of authoritarianism, impending climate catastrophe, and unspeakable violence daily. Complete system failure feels imminent, doesn't it? Let me offer a ray of hope: This extreme churn is not a death, but the (difficult) process of rebirth. If that's true, let's get to the other side so we can start to rebuild the world we want to see.I'm trying something different with this one – it will be backed with three other pre-released tracks. The reason is so that it be listed as an EP in all the streaming platforms. It will have the following track list:Read Me OutBlind SpotShe BelievesLeavingAll of these songs have a similar theme: Opting out. Fun times! But as always, YOU GET TO HEAR IT FIRST. Like all my recent singles – it features some of Boston's best musicians: Dave Brophy on drums & percussion, Andrew Stern on lead guitar, Joe McMahon on bass, and Peter Fernandez on keyboards.Patrons ($5 level) get early access to my releases (and MP3 320 downloads), plus exclusive access to demo versions and other more "vulnerable" posts. How Many Knocks Do We Have to Take?
This song was born out of a writing prompt from my wife. I write a lot of "message" songs, but she challenged me to put more of myself into it. "Knocks" is the result of that, and I may have overshot. "Knocks" is personal and raw, tapping into the sense of exhaustion that we all feel from the intensity of the past few years. It's about how capitalism depletes our energy... and how we respond to it.It features Andy Santospago on pedal steel guitar and other great musicians of the Boston area: Dave Brophy on drums & percussion, Joe McMahon on bass, and Peter Fernandez on keyboards.Patrons ($5 level) get early access to my releases (and MP3 320 downloads), plus exclusive access to demo versions and other more "vulnerable" posts. The Fever Never Broke
“Fever” is about deploying empathy to get past the frustration we have with one another. A plea to actually TALK to one another, despite the intentional pressure (by those in power) to keep us apart, distracted by pointless, bitter in-fighting. Collective action is only possible when we see and experience commonality and cohesion. The narrative in “Fever” goes from frustration to empathy in 4 minutes. It demonstrates a pathway, and the cost of NOT coming together. I perform it live often, and it usually generates an intense reaction. You can feel the energy shift in the room.OK... this is amazing, but I got an arts grant to support the studio production of this track. I made a pitch with a demo and a set of lyrics, along with my aim to have it serve a social good. This song was tested in front of real audiences. It’s been revised again and again in response to feedback and post-show audience comments. It features the beautiful backing vocals of Britt Connors, who guested on One Sunday in Autumn as well. And like my other recent singles, this song is made infinitely better by some of the Boston area’s best musicians: Andrew Stern (Mark Erelli Band, Dennis Brennan Band) on lead and 12-string guitar, Dave Brophy (Will Dailey, Alisa Amador) on drums & percussion, Joe McMahon on bass, and Peter Fernandez on organ.Patrons ($5 level) get early access to my releases (and MP3 320 downloads), plus exclusive access to demo versions and other more "vulnerable" posts. You're in My Blind Spot
This track is co-written with my friend Bob Bradshaw, and it has a different feel to it than other songs in this series. First of all, the vocals are very present in the mix. And though it's a traditional folk format, my producer really steered away from that in the instrumentation and overall mix.Full release is due on Tuesday 9/19 – but you get to hear it before anyone else.Patrons ($5 level) get early access to my releases (and MP3 320 downloads), plus exclusive access to demo versions and other more "vulnerable" posts. It's So Lifelike
This one is somewhat of a sequel to "Silicon in My Soul" (released a few months ago), and I wanted it to have an old movie feel to it. A mix of the organic and digital. When we're surrounded by things such as AI, chatbots, and deepfakes – it tests our senses. It's disorienting, and our brains have to work harder than ever to discern what's human and what's not. There's No Trust in Your Transparency
If we live like everything is a transaction, we end up feeling spent all the time.I'm really psyched about how this one came out. I feel like it's really different from the songs I've produced so far. For example, here's how it started – a live version that I posted here back in 2021. That's also how I play it live in my solo format. Now it's fully developed, with some help from my very talented friends.I won't brag, it's unbecoming. Besides, as the song reminds me, "You should have kept your victories safe, instead of tangled in the ticker tape."Patrons ($5 level) get early access to my releases (and MP3 320 downloads), plus exclusive access to demo versions and other more "vulnerable" posts. No One Cares About Us
The starting posture of the Web is "who cares?" We have to recognize: We are not exceptional. We do not deserve attention. We have to earn it. And the algorithms are working against us. Social media is a lie. It promises a podium. But instead, it merely hires you to be unpaid labor to make sociopaths wealthier. Can you still get something out of it? Sure, but we have to see through the misconceptions to find a smart strategy so that we can actually get something out of our marketing efforts. LinkedIn Is a Tough Scroll
I've been having a tough time with LinkedIn lately. What's your feed like? Scrolling through LinkedIn, my feed is cringe after cringe. A never-ending stream of performative, self-aggrandizing humble brags. I know we're excited about our current job, a cool project, or our purpose/mission – but is the way we talk about it coming off the wrong way? In other words, is the "Digital Representation of You" the YOU that you want to project? So yes, here's a rant. Please take this in the right spirit. Why Black Lives Matter Is Such a Powerful Slogan
Creating positive change is a marketing problem as much as anything. We need to be able to express our ideals with clarity and empathy, so that they are understood at an elemental level. In my lifetime, the left has been terrible at this – and political battles are often lost before they even begin. That's why it's worth examining the phrase, Black Lives Matter. Not only to appreciate its precision and power, but to learn lessons about how to create better messaging for future progressive movements.—In the coming months, I intend to spend more time on issues like this. My contention is that in today's world, We Need Marketing More Than Ever. Why? Our culture carries water for a lot of cancerous concepts. Many of them are hiding in plain sight, unnoticed simply because 1) they've always been there, and 2) privilege is a blind spot.I'm not here to debate this, I'm here to help. Here's the thing: The culture is ours. We get to create it. Yes, there are well-moneyed foes and powerful forces against us. But in our best moments, we stand together and sing in tune. Our voices form a chorus of change.I don't have to be the leader of that change, and you don't either (though if you are, I'm here to cheer you on). But we do need to participate. It starts with small actions that become habit. Small actions multiply. What I hope is that these will become a series of small actions. I don't purport to have any of the answers. But we have little chance if we don't have the hard conversations that lead to asking the right questions.I invite you to follow along here in my Patreon community, where I share exclusive episodes and a new experiment with workshopping unfinished works. Could be cool. We'll see.

We Need Marketing More Than Ever
Some of the biggest problems we face today could be solved with better marketing. I ask you to put aside what you think of as "marketing" for a moment, because we are losing ground. And if we're not using our voice to speak up for those who need us, I'm not sure what we're doing here. What's the point of having an audience if we're just here to exploit it for our own benefit only? Having an audience = power. We as creatives have the power, and we should use it. Searching for Signs of Survival
In the spirit of making changes to both my podcast and Patreon, let's try something new today. Here is a rough demo I recorded into my iPhone back in July called "One Sunday in Autumn" but it's appropriate today since it's 9/29. You'll understand it if you give this tune a listen. It's about The Cost of Inaction.Like I said in my last post, we get to create the culture. We do this in the things we make – and present – to the world. Even though it's not 100% finished, I'll be performing this song live on Saturday in a socially-distanced outdoor show in my neighborhood, so I'll get some feedback on it – but I'd love to hear your impressions of it as well. Don't hold back. Here's my plan: Future posts of this type will be for patrons only. I intend to share more unfinished works, and get into some behind-the-scenes processes and struggles. Why for patrons only? I want this to be a community of those who really want to be here – not just to listen, but to participate. This stuff is fascinating to me, and maybe it is to you as well. I will be honored to have you with me on this journey."You might be ready to go, but I can't carry your soul..."For more of my (finished) music: https://michaelboezi.com/music Happy creating,Michael–Credits: Lyrics by Michael Boezi, music by Bob Bradshaw and Michael Boezi.©2020 Control Mouse Media, LLC. Refocusing When Focusing Is Difficult
After a long hiatus this summer, I relaunched my long-running podcast this morning. I've amended the format and focus a little to steer into the things that I like about it – and more importantly, the things I think that you like about it too. If you want a more detailed explanation of why I took a break, it's here in this episode: Closing Up Shop (Episode 175). But in short, it just felt like it was not that important to hear from me in this moment. That may still be true. There are critical conversations happening right now around racial justice and much-needed social change, the escalating climate emergency, and oh yeah... a pandemic that continues to rage unabated because of failed national "leadership" coupled with our culture of selfishness. My first goal is to not get in the way of those conversations. My voice is not necessary right now. I should be doing more listening than talking. I'm trying to do that. At the same time, what good is having a platform without using it to assist and amplify the voices we should be listening to right now? I've been learning a lot lately – and it's taken a lot of unlearning as well. What I hope is that this podcast – and this community here on Patreon – will become a series of small actions. I don't purport to have any of the answers. But we have little chance if we don't have the hard conversations that lead to asking the right questions.More to come – I hope you will join me on this journey. Sincerely,Michael

Small Groups for Big Results: Social Strategy 201
Let's question the concept of getting a large social media following. Large numbers of "eyeballs" often don't do us much good compared to the tight connections of smaller groups. How to Support Small Businesses During the Coronavirus Crisis
What can we do as consumers to help support small businesses while the economy grinds to a halt? While the COVID-19 pandemic will be painful for all workers, none will feel it like small businesses do. The CDC is recommending a two-month halt to gatherings, among other guidelines.* Quoting Cathy Merrill in the Washington Post about the CDC's order:Two months is not a hiatus; it is a death sentence for small business. If this crisis goes on for an extended period of time, many of the businesses we love will not survive. Now is the time to help our friends and neighbors who run these small businesses. This special episode gives a list of ideas to help keep our small businesses afloat. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Finding connection where it’s not immediately obvious.
