FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 189 – ULRIKA TORQUATO- Joyering!
Ulrika Torquato is as diverse in the countries she has lived in as in the careers she has pursued: medical doctor, a career as opera singer and currently postgraduate studies in palliative care psychology. The outcome of this: Joyering: the practice of noticing joy in every day life. We are talking meaning, presence and what truly matters. BIO Born in Sweden, raised in Brazil, and now living in Switzerland, my path has been anything but linear. I first trained and worked as a medical doctor before leaving that career to pursue opera singing in Europe. Although the change felt deeply right at the time, it did not bring the sense of fulfillment I had expected. Over the years, I became increasingly interested in why so many of us continue feeling that something is missing, even when life looks good from the outside. What gradually changed my life was not another achievement or reinvention, but learning to pay attention differently — noticing the small moments of joy and meaning that were already present, but often overlooked. This led me to create Joyering®, a simple app and practice that helps people reconnect with those moments in daily life. Now, at 57, I find myself returning in a new way to medicine through postgraduate studies in palliative care psychology, integrating different parts of my life and exploring what truly matters in how we live. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 187 – Lisa Lacy – The Woman You Become After You Survive
Today we explore how hardship changes us and why we can’t return to who we were before. How she survived a full-blown psychosis in her 40s, living with a congenital blood disease and repeated near-death pulmonary embolisms, and how a January hospitalization and turning 50 led her to cancel big birthday plans, retreat alone to the mountains, grieve, and confront mortality. We discuss stopping instead of pushing through, building healthy relationships, normalizing trauma, using reflection, divided attention and grounding in breath/heartbeat, reframing negative self-talk with statements of fact, and focusing on small daily wins. BIOLisa Lacy is a writer, trauma educator, and author of the upcoming memoir Notes From a Certified Madwoman and its companion Field Guide: The Psychology of Performance™️. After more than three decades in corporate education, healthcare consulting, performance, and storytelling, Lisa now speaks and writes about addiction, psychosis, trauma, nervous systems, identity masking, reinvention, and the hidden realities of high functioning survival in women. Drawing from lived experience, recovery, and years teaching trauma informed emotional intelligence in addiction recovery centers across Georgia, Lisa creates conversations that are psychologically informed without sounding clinical, emotionally honest, unexpectedly funny, and deeply human. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 186 – Chip Scholz – WHY HAVING IT ALL FIGURED OUT ISNT HELPFUL
The host introduces the theme “Why Having It All Figured Out Isn’t Helpful” and interviews Chip Schultz, author of Every Dog Has Its Day: Reflections of Life, Love and the Leash, an executive coach, speaker, and woodturner. Schultz, married 42 years and a stepfather to three daughters, argues nobody has it all figured out and that embracing being wrong enables flexibility (“semper gumby”) and curiosity over judgment. He describes how a stroke at 55 shifted him from performance and overwork to authenticity, health, and usefulness, alongside renewed creativity through woodturning and writing. He explains woodturning and how round forms can relax the mind, and shares how StoryWorth revived his writing, leading to multiple books. Discussing “memento mori,” early parental deaths, and grief, he emphasizes using limited time kindly, remembering hardships, and viewing “going through things” as the journey. His tips include staying curious, caring for one’s body, and prioritizing sleep.

FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 185 – Lorie Eber – How to stay Healthy in a world designed to make us Fat & Lazy
Lori Aber, a Southern California metabolic health and midlife wellness educator and former corporate litigator, talks about staying healthy in a modern environment that encourages inactivity, oversized portions, stress, and convenience foods—challenges that intensify in midlife and menopause. Lori explains how metabolism and weight changes are often driven more by lifestyle factors like inactivity, loss of lean muscle (sarcopenia), stress, and poor sleep than by menopause alone, and emphasizes the importance of safe, intelligent strength training to preserve muscle. She debunks many myths and Lori’s practical tips will sure make a difference! BIO Lorie Eber is a metabolic health and midlife wellness educator who helps women understand how stress, sleep, hormones, and daily habits affect metabolism as we age — and what actually works to support energy, health, and weight in real life. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 184 – Sandra Wood – When being Capable becomes a Curse
In this episode of Fabulous After 50, I interview Idaho-based transformation coach and keynote speaker Sandra Wood about the hidden cost of being “the capable one” and how carrying too much can shift from something women do to who they believe they are. BIO After spending years as a devoted wife, stay-at-home mom, and the rock for everyone around her, my guest hit a breaking point—cancer at 40, divorce after 20 years, and the daunting task of rebuilding her life and career while raising two teenagers alone. But she didn’t just survive; she transformed. With nearly two decades as a coach and nonprofit leader—supporting others through their darkest moments at places like Ronald McDonald House and cancer centers—she’s seen firsthand what it means to fall apart and, more importantly, how to piece yourself back together. Now, she helps high-achieving women who’ve lost themselves in the chaos of caring for everyone else. Her work is raw, real, and rooted in her own hard-won wisdom: “If you don’t go within, you go without.” LINKS Sandra Wood’s Website https://www.instagram.com/sandrawoodcoach/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/sandrawoodcoach If you enjoy the podcast please subscribe, review and share to spread the word. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 183 – Bernice McDonald – From “Not Enough” to “Brave Enough”
In this episode, we explore how fear and feeling “not enough” hold many women back, especially after 50. We talk about her Tiny Brave Steps method—building a bridge across a “cavern” with small, brave planks—and her ACT tool. A human talk based on experience and wisdom with valuable tips. BIO Bernice McDonald is a Life Strategist who helps people navigate the hard stuff—loss, fear, change, disappointment—and discover the courage to rebuild through her “Tiny Brave Steps” method. She believes that courage isn’t the absence of fear – it’s learning to take one small, Brave Step while still scared. Her message is simple and deeply human: “You can do hard things, even if the step you take is tiny.” As the author of the “Little Books of Courage” series (beginning with ‘Brave Enough to Be Myself’ and ‘Brave Enough to Let Go’), Bernice blends storytelling, neuroscience, and soulful reflection to help listeners recognize their strength, befriend fear, and move forward with hope. Her warmth, humour, and practical tools make her an unforgettable guest for podcasts exploring personal growth, courage, mindset, midlife transitions, spirituality, or mental resilience. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 182 – Soreya James – Cancelled, Broken, and Back Every Single Time
“Cancelled, Broken, and Back Every Single Time” She has been broken, cancelled, gone viral, faced psychosis, solo motherhood, dengue fever alone on a tile floor in Thailand and came back every single time. Today we welcome Soreya James, ceremonial speaker, transformational guide, thrice Author and Director of the Soul Sanctuary who has taken from her pretty extraordinary life to create a precise, complete technology that leaves nothing untouched. BIOI have lived a big life. One that many would say is unreachable but I believe in destiny and the human spirit and I am doing all that I can to embody mine. I have worked for one of the wealthiest men on earth, made and lost everything several times over, navigated some of the darkest terrain a human can endure. Parented solo for twenty years, run over thirty global retreats, held people in their deepest pain and across the threshold of death. Faced three near-death experiences and learned how to be present with all of it. A front page newspaper headline once called me a cult leader. An investigation threatened six months in prison, a grandfather whose hands taught me what forgiveness really costs. Years in India with Masters, Yogis and Gurus. Hundreds of hours of private work with those who came to me when everything else had found its limit. What I have seen and lived has me believing so deeply, so completely, in the human spirit. I haven’t just studied human psychology. I have lived it, for thirty-five years of this wild, unrelenting, beautiful life. I have worked with every major tradition of human healing and transformation available and I love to share it from my heart and soul. What has come from all of this is gold. A precise, complete technology that leaves nothing untouched. Whether I am with one person or a thousand, the process is the same. Remove the obstructions to the human spirit. Return a human being to the direct experience of their own soul. Join me as spiritual healer, former performing artist, and trauma informed educator Heather Ann — reveals how the kitchen becomes the most unexpected portal for emotional healing, spiritual awakening, and even financial expansion. Many insights and tips there for you! BIO As women cross fifty, the kitchen stops being a place of duty and becomes a place of initiation. In this conversation, Heather Ann Ferri — spiritual healer, former performing artist, and trauma informed educator — reveals how the kitchen becomes the most unexpected portal for emotional healing, spiritual awakening, and even financial expansion. Drawing from ancient sciences, somatic wisdom, and her own performing arts infused healing toolkit, Heather shares how water, food, breath, writing, chanting, and ritual at the kitchen table can rewire a woman’s nervous system, restore her joy, and reconnect her to her feminine power. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 178 – JULIE KENNEDY- Why Pausing is the Most Powerful Thing You’re Not Doing
“We live in a world that rewards constant motion. Time Out is for the people who are ready to discover that stillness is not the opposite of progress — it’s the source of it.” Today the tables are turned as Sharon interviews me on my new offer: Timeouts, to reset, to hear ourselves. Our world is noisy and asks constant attention, we are the only ones who can choose to create pockets of quiet to hear ourselves, to reconnect and emerge stronger, clearer, happier. BIOMentor, coach, sparring partner, I am passionate about learning, growing, making the most of our lives. I pull on my many coaching accreditations, past as management consultant and general passion for life and people I have deepened in the many countries I live in to genuinely be there for whoever is lacking clarity, be it through short sparring sessions, be it through longer coaching programs, or through my new insight: our need for Timeouts to breathe, to quieten our mind and return to ourselves. Divorced with three grown up children I live in the Netherlands with partner of 10 years and our crazy cat and when not philosophizing I love transcendental meditation, running, cycling, dancing but also reading and just being. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 164 – MEREDITH GILL – Daring go Digital after Fifty!
A chance encounter on Facebook and so much in common!Join us as we discuss expatriation, motherhood, divorce, meaningfulness, independence and how we dared open to a new way of earning, aligned with our values, that fits in with our lifestyle, surrounded by a supportive international community and how we learn every step of the way. Get curious, be inspired. Enjoy the can-do vibes because so can you! BIOMeredith is a multi-passionate creative, expat, and entrepreneur who has spent her life navigating diverse careers—from animation and software sales to school administration. But when she became a parent, her priorities shifted. Living in Spain with young children and no family support, she longed for a life that aligned with her values of creativity, connection, and freedom. The next 14 years were spent as an “expat mom”, focused on creating (& recreating) home for her family and working in pockets of time around the kids’ schedules in a crazy patchwork of jobs & roles! At 57, everything changed when she was made redundant, losing not just her job but also her work visa after 7 years in Canada. Facing job rejections and disillusioned with the corporate world, she found herself at a crossroads. That’s when an unexpected moment of inspiration struck—an Instagram post from a woman living the freedom-filled life in Europe that Meredith had always dreamed of. Seeing her story shattered Meredith’s belief that traditional career paths were the only option, and for the first time, she saw a clear way forward. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 148 – Turning your worst nightmare into a magnificent mission
Prepare today to meet an exceptional woman, Nathalie Grall Sorensen who I met over 15 years ago when we were posted with our families in Dakar Senegal. Her story is one of devastating loss – our worst nightmare as mothers – but also of love and resilience and how she became a passionate advocate of organ donation in the UAE, devoting herself tirelessly to her mission and to the ‘Viggo effect’.A powerful message of what we are capable of, inspiring every one of us to become a better person. BIONathalie is French and has been living in Dubai for the last 15 years. She grew up in Normandy, France, married a Dane, lived as expat in five other countries before the UAE and has two children: Viggo and Coralie.Coralie lives in Spain and runs an agro-forest farm “the green rebel “” with her partner Carlo and have a lovely two years old name Paulo.Nathalie has always worked in whichever way she can, to help others. She ran a pottery workshop in Senegal to help deaf children rejected by their family. In Dubai, she was lucky to spend a lot of time with her son Viggo, supporting him with school and activities and his passion for golf. She is not only passionate about humans but animals too and has been in charge of an animal welfare organization in Dubai for the last 13 years, to educate and guide people and improve animal welfare. Her son Viggo, a golf champion, tragically passed away in Dubai two years ago, just three months shy of his eighteenth birthday. It was a brain hemorrhage. They chose to donate his organs and by doing so he has saved five lives. Nathalie decided to turn this tragedy into transformation, turning loss into legacy. She lobbies passionately for organ donation, helps the transplant program and is Ambassador for the aftercare of donor families. “Viggo left me an important mission: to advocate organ donation, to inform of the value of donation, to care, and share experience and help build a bridge with family donors. She has attended over 25 conferences to give speeches/testimonials and to share Viggo’s story, as well as appearing across multiple media channels, congresses, conferences, hospitals, tirelessly promoting organ donation every chance she can. Nathalie received an Award from the UAE health authorities and an award from the French consulate in Dubai for her humanitarian work promoting organ donations in the UAE. Viggo’s story continues to save lives. FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY! EPISODE 146 – Overcoming self-sabotage from within, from a reformed people pleaser
And yes, today we have a man on the hot seat! The creator of the “Mindful Man movement” and the “From caving it to crushing it” podcast: Drew Deraney. Join us for this really interesting discussion about overcoming Self-Sabotage from within – wisdom from a reformed people pleaser. Shared with vulnerability and courage we discuss differences and commonalities and how together, man and woman, we can empower ourselves and unite to make the world a better place. BIODrew is the proud father of three, and for most of his life he has been concerned with what people thought of him and how he was supposed to act. He learned not to be his authentic self and instead became a people pleaser, a man wearing a mask. Over a 9-month span a few years ago, he endured four faith-shaking life events that caused him to question his existence and he became determined to find a better way to live. These traumatic events that would likely have derailed others, led Drew to turn the experiences into a passion for helping people to share THEIR stories. He made the discovery that to be happy, one must adhere to their own standards of honesty, integrity and truth and he needed to break free from the belief system anchored to him for 50 years. That discovery led him to launch his Mindful Man Movement™ and create the podcast: “From Caving in to Crushing It!” Drew has found his purpose to empower other men ready to do the same. Drew formed a men’s group and launched a coaching practice to provide a safe space for men to share, without judgement, and transform.
